The New Zealand shipyard, McMullen & Wing, has certainly kept up with its country’s heritage of yachting. Their course in yacht building has progressed to accommodate each tendency of New Zealand culture. From innovative local boats, International Sailing Races and Regattas (One Ton Cup, Whitbread Round the World Race, America’s Cup), global exploring yachts, fishing crafts and superyacht refits, to world class luxury motor yachts. Located in Auckland, “The City of Sails”, McMullen & Wing builds yachts up to 164feet / 55 meters (up to present time) known for their reliability and longevity.

Chris McMullen and Eric Wing started building steel hull boats in 1969 at the present yard location on the banks of the Tamaki River in Auckland. The 1970’s was the era of a number of successful racing yacht builds for McMullen and Wing, including the Wai-Aniwa, winner of the 1972 One Ton Cup in Sydney, Australia.

New Zealand’s first ocean racing maxi yacht, Ceramco, was built in 1981 by McMullen & Wing for Peter Blake’s Whitbread Round the World Race attempt. Ceramco was one of many boat building projects undertaken by McMullen & Wing for Sir Peter Blake, including the modification of round the world sailing catamaran Enza and culminating in the victorious America’s Cup champion racers of 1995 with racing yacht Black Magic. In 1985, the company won the contract to build the first 3 composite-hulled 12-metre racing yachts for the 1987 America’s Cup Challenge.

In 1986 the company was purchased by two brothers, David and Terry Porter. The Porters expanded operations towards refits, the construction of Superyachts, large Sportfish vessels, and custom designed high performance inflatables (RIBs).

In 1987, New Zealand went all the way to the Louis Vuitton Finals – an outstanding debut for the world’s first fiberglass 39foot / 12meter yachts constructed at McMullen & Wing.

The famous the 171foot / 52meter three-masted schooner, Shenandoah, arrived in Auckland in 1994 to get a much needed full restoration by McMullen & Wing. Shenandoah won the award for best refit at the 1998 International Superyacht Society Awards.

In 1999, the 79foot / 24meter Day Money (now Big Easy) was the first of four sportfish yachts built by McMullen and Wing. Day Money was honored as a finalist in the International Superyacht Society awards in 2000 and the 79foot / 24meter Dreamin’ On (now Snowgoose) sportfisher was a finalist in the International Superyacht Society awards in 2001. The same year, McMullen & Wing built the 115foot / 35meter steel/aluminum expedition motor yacht Surprise, designed by Ward Setzer for Pacific cruising. Surprise won the International Superyacht Society award for best motor yacht in her length category.

The advanced composite yacht fisherman, Mea Culpa (131feet / 40meters), was launched in 2003 by McMullen & Wing. Executed to the highest standards in advanced composite materials to a design by Jack Sarin and Associates, Mea Culpa travelled the globe, fulfilling her owner’s dream of enjoying the abundance of the world’s greatest recreational fishing grounds with an active catch-and-release fishing program. The same year, the 115foot / 35meter performance aluminum sailing yacht Ipanema (designed by German Frers) won the Millennium Cup in superyacht regatta in Auckland only days after launching.In 2005, the 82foot / 25meter, 40+ knots water jet powered motor yacht Jariya (now called Elielle) was built by McMullen & Wing to a design by Michael Peters Yacht Design and interior design by J.C. Espinosa. Jariya won the International Superyacht Society Award for best motoryacht in her length range.

In 2006 McMullen & Wing began to design and build a line of production tenders. This launched yet another lofty addition to their diverse portfolio and the company is now well known to be the builder to see for custom tenders to match custom superyachts.

Built in 2007, the 121foot / 37meter ultra high-speed carbon fiber luxury motor yacht, Ermis 2 still remains one of the top ten fastest motor yachts ever built in the world, with a top speed of nearly 60 knots. Naval architecture and interior design was by Humphreys Yacht Design. Ermis 2 was honored by the International Superyacht Society as the best motor yacht in her length category.

The internationally acclaimed Big Fish (148foot / 45meter), a steel/aluminum luxury expedition motor yacht, was built in 2010. Big Fish received numerous prestigious awards, including the International Superyacht Society award for best motor yacht in her length category, Showboats International Design Award for Naval Architecture, World Yachts Trophy for Innovation, Asian Boating Award for Innovation and a judges’ special commendation for best yacht at the World Superyacht Awards.

2016 has seen McMullen & Wing’s largest yacht launched on their slipway – the 164foot / 50meter Y/N 1016 luxury expedition motor yacht.

McMullen & Wing is an advanced composite builder, an aluminum yacht builder and a steel ship builder, all wrapped into one. Their facilities are located on the banks of the Tamaki River in Auckland New Zealand with deep water access leading directly to Auckland’s Waitemata Harbor. With five construction halls in four separate buildings, plus full engineering, electrical and joinery workshops, design office and administration block, they have ample facilities to accommodate their projects.  As all facilities occupy the same site, communication flow remains simple and client visits can encompass the whole project within a time efficient schedule.

The shipyard has recently developed three new ranges of fully custom yachts between 44 and 58 meters. The FLOW Series is designed by Vripack and consists of two types, 144feet / 44meters and 167feet / 51meters. The Blade Series designed by H2 Yacht Design has three types 171feet / 52meters (5 cabins), 171feet / 52meters (6 cabins) and 190feet / 58meters. The Diamond Series, designed by Gregory C Marshall consists of the 131feet / 40meters, 148feet / 45meters, 164feet / 50meters and 180feet / 55meters yachts.

MAYA Yacht for Sale

This custom built bluewater cruiser was designed by naval architect Alan Warwick and built at the renowned McMullen & Wing yard in New Zealand for a very experienced yachtsman. Great effort was put into the design and construction to ensure absolute comfort and safety in all sea conditions, in any climate in the world. MAYA was built with five watertight bulkheads and the aluminum hull exceeds Det Nortske Veritas requirements. The interior joinery is beautifully crafted with native New Zealand tawa wood.

The 37.8 metre motor yacht Ermis² has been jointly listed for sale by Michel Chryssicopoulos at IYC and Atalanta Golden Yachts .

Ermis² was built in ultra-lightweight composites by New Zealand yard McMullen & Wing to a design by Humphreys Yacht Design and delivered in 2008 with a refit in 2010_._ Accommodation is for up to 10 guests in four cabins comprising a large master suite, a double with a king sized bed and two twins, each with a Pullman berth. All cabins on this  yacht for sale  have entertainment centres, LCD television screens and en-suite bathroom facilities.

The main saloon has L-shaped seating and an entertainment centre including a new LG 50-inch television screen and a Linn audio/visual system, while forward is a formal dining table with seating for up to guests. A versatile interior layout includes the option of opening up the galley into the main saloon, or closing it off for complete privacy. A second bonus guest saloon is located on the lower deck, with an L-shaped leather sofa and study.

Outdoors, the large sundeck features a sunbed, sunpads, al fresco dining, a removable sunshade and a film projector to enjoy movies under a starry sky.

One of the world’s fastest yachts , Ermis² is powered by three MTU 16V4000 M90 series engines, each rated at 3,698hp. With her Kamewa jet drives, her total power output is a superlative 11,000hp, resulting in a top speed of 58 knots and comfortable cruising at 45 knots.

Lying in Greece,  Ermis² is asking €8,500,000.

Motor Yacht

Luxury motor yacht Ermis2 was built in 2007 by New Zealand shipyard McMullen & Wing and represents an innovative and fast-moving superyacht. With a GRP hull and superstructure, she features interior and exterior design by Humphreys Yacht Design. This triple waterjet propulsion yacht measures 37.8 metres and can accommodate up to eight guests.

Designed by Rob Humphreys in the United Kingdom with composite engineering by High Modulus, this high speed motor yacht is constructed using the VIP (Vacuum Infusion Process) in Carbon- fibre to obtain an ultra-lightweight construction able to withstand the extreme loadings of up to 2.2G while travelling at over 55 knots.

The M&W design team embarked upon a program to critically analyse every component of the vessel to save weight; the vacuum infusion process of Carbon-fibre/Kevlar/Foam composite was utilized in the building of hull and superstructure, Titanium where possible for deck fittings and hand rails, and light weight veneered foam panels for interior joinery, all to Germanischer Lloyds Class and MCA.

Fitted with a generous array of navigation and communications systems, Ermis2 is a state of the art vessel, complimented with an interior that is streamlined and light. Paint-treated ash and clear varnish maple combine with contemporary furnishings to create a modern nautical language. She was the winner of the “Best Power Yacht, 24-40 metres” category at the 2008 International Superyacht Society Design and Leadership Awards.

Motor yacht Ermis2 has a strong and serious profile that doesn’t look unlike a workboat, based on a brief by the owner that being seaworthy was her main priority. The interior mirrors this profile but carries a sense of comfort with its use of lighter woods and yellow, tan and blue leathers. Amongst her four cabins are an indulgent master stateroom; one double cabin; and two twin cabins.

Luxury yacht Ermis2 is powered by three MTU16V 4000 M90 series engines that allow her to reach a maximum speed of 57 knots. She can achieve a range of 2,300 nautical miles while cruising at a speed of 30 knots.

The future of the 50m steel/aluminium motor yacht Star Fish , that was damaged by the midnight fire at McMullen & Wing shipyard in New Zealand ‘s Auckland three months ago, is now known. The remaining undamaged hull, machinery as well as equipment assets of the StarFish yacht project are available for immediate sale for completion by McMullen & Wing.

Luxury expedition yacht STAR FISH

In need of a new superstructure and interior, the StarFish yacht could be launched in 18 months, offering a new owner an outstanding high volume custom expedition yacht, fully warranted by her original award-winning New Zealand shipyard, at a very substantial discount from normal new build cost.

The Star Fish yacht design is a larger development of the spectacularly successful and highly awarded 45m charter yacht Big Fish , built by McMullen & Wing for the same owner.

Sharing the same high efficiency displacement hull form, the luxury yacht Star Fish offers incredible volume, stability and outstanding sea keeping characteristics proven over superyacht Big Fish’s 60,000 nautical miles of cruising and unparalleled charter record.

Fire Damage

Star Fish yacht was 75% complete at the time of the fire, and due for launch in March 2013.

Her steel hull and aluminium superstructure were complete, faired and painting was in progress. Interior accommodation was well progressed, electrical and electronic systems underway and machinery installation mostly complete.

The fire gutted the interior, which has now been removed. Damage to the superstructure was sufficient to warrant replacement of the entire aluminium fabrications, which have already also been largely removed and discarded.

The completed steel hull was essentially undamaged.

The engine room, which was 95% complete, was also saved, with only very minor impact which can be wholly restored.

In financial terms, repair and reinstatement of the fire damage to brand new condition represents about half the total cost which had been expended at the time of the fire.

The remaining value post-fire, comprising steel hull, engine room machinery & fitout, extensive undamaged equipment inventory and design investment, has been assessed at over US$14m. It is available for purchase at a mere fraction of this value.

Superyacht StarFish has been extensively surveyed post-fire to confirm the state of remaining structures and equipment to ensure only items which can be delivered to brand new superyacht standard are retained.

Laser measurements have been taken of shaft alignment and specific structural items, confirming that the fire caused no distortion to the steel hull.

Experts from classification society Germanischer Lloyd have identified isolated areas of local damage to steel decks and bulkheads which would be replaced with new to ensure that the entire completed steel structure represents a foundation of 100% confidence and quality.

Opportunity

The fire was a catastrophic event for owner, builder and subcontractors alike, however the unique circumstances do present some opportunities.

As a sound and proven hull platform with extensive equipment inventory and nearly complete machinery installation, in need of a new superstructure and interior, the project can be seen as a well-developed blank canvas with a significant head start and attractive value proposition.

A new owner can choose whether to take advantage of the existing design and development, or to chart a new path in styling and/or interior design to create a completely bespoke custom yacht. With so much technical work already complete, the new yacht could be completed in as little as 18 months and delivered at a discount of as much as US$9m on equivalent new build cost.

The project assets for sale include the spectacular and fully developed Star Fish design package, offering the fastest and lowest cost delivery.  With a 38m owner’s deck, flexible layout offering up to 6 staterooms and extensive outdoor living options, this is an extremely attractive design for owner and charter use alike.
