Oceanco and Luiz De Basto team up for 90m concept Cosmos

Dutch yard Oceanco has teamed up with designer Luiz De Basto for its latest concept, the 90 metre Cosmos.

Inspired by a desire to connect with the yacht’s surroundings, whilst remaining in a controlled environment, this futuristic design features an enormous glass dome that covers the skylounge and can be dimmed or tinted to suit the mood on board.

De Basto explained that extensive studies have gone into the design of Cosmos to ensure it can be commissioned. “The glass dome, while it looks simple, is extremely complex,” he added. “This provides an interesting tension between being adventurous and being safe.”

Forward of this area is an open observation deck, accessed via sliding glass doors, which would be fitted with a superyacht spa pool , creating an ideal spot for watching the world go by.

Other key features on board Cosmos include a superyacht helipad on the foredeck and an aft-deck infinity pool. Al fresco dining options are plentiful with seating for ten in the cockpit and on the upper deck aft.

Further details are yet to be revealed, with the total accommodation capacity and engine installation unclear. However, Cosmos would certainly cut a striking figure on the water, with progressive lines creating a sporty profile. What’s more, her hull was developed in collaboration with British naval architecture firm BMT Nigel Gee .

Other superyacht projects currently under development at the Dutch yard include the 105 metre sailing yacht Black Pearl and the 110 metre flagship yacht Jubilee , both of which are due to be delivered later this year.

The idea behind Project Cosmos is to have a yacht where you can be in touch with and enjoy your surroundings yet still be in a controlled environment. This concept led to the creation of a glass dome, a luxurious empty space completely covering the upper deck. The glass dome, while it looks simple, is extremely complex.

The entire yacht will have a huge empty space on the top deck creating a unique open layout with the dynamic dome floating optically above the hull. The glass can be dimmed or coloured to support a desired mood. In addition to sporting the completely innovative glass dome, the forward moving angles of the structure give it an additional progressive profile.

Acclaimed shipbuilder Oceanco presented a new mega yacht concept, the 90-metre Cosmos . This time Oceanco teamed up with Luiz De Basto , a superyacht designer who’s worked with the leading companies on a large number of outstanding superyacht concepts.

The idea behind the project is a contemporary design of a massive glass dome that covers the sky lounge to create a connection with the environment surrounding the yacht. The guests aboard will be able to dim or tint it to suit their preferences.

“The glass dome, while it looks simple, is extremely complex. This provides an interesting tension between being adventurous and being safe,” comments De Basto.

Another great feature of this innovative design is the observation deck with incredible panoramic views, which is placed forward of the sky lounge and includes a large spa pool.

Mega yacht Cosmos will be equipped with a helipad and some lavish amenities. These will include an infinity pool, alfresco dining areas, luxurious seating and lounging areas, and generous guest cabins.

More details on the project are yet to be revealed.

Meanwhile, Oceanco are working on sailing yacht Black Pearl and motor yacht Jubilee , which has recently completed her sea trials.

Project Cosmos is the game changing 90m concept born from a collaboration between two industry greats, Oceanco shipyard and Luiz de Basto Designs. The superyacht is distinguished by a large glass dome covering the upper deck, as well as a sophisticated and streamlined profile.

 Project Cosmos was born from the desire to create a superyacht which harmonises the two values of being completely in touch with and enjoying your surroundings, while remaining in a protected and controlled, luxury environment. The glass dome may look simple and clean, but is in fact extremely complex and intricate. 

De Basto Designs commented that the glass dome and its luxurious space provides 'an interesting tension between being dangerous and being safe', straddling the lines of daring while remaining totally in control. In this way the project is symbolic of the often contradictory themes of the universe, hence its galactic name. 

Cosmos is graced with a large, empty space on the top deck, creating a totally unique and open plan layout unlike any other seen on a superyacht of this size. The dynamic dome floats optically above the hull to great visual effect. The glass dome can also be dimmed or coloured to reflect a specific mood, and is in this way an extension of the belief that a superyacht is indeed a true representation of an owner's character and personality. 

Despite the clean curvature of Cosmos, the forward moving angles of the structure give it an otherworldly and progressive profile. This is the superyacht of the future, and awaits a progressive owner to bring it forward and to life.

Oceanco has introduced many of the world’s most compelling gigayachts. The Dutch shipyard has also partnered with leading designers for concepts that take your breath away. The 295-foot Cosmos concept from Luiz de Basto and Oceanco has a curved, almost sportboat-like superstructure, but its most dramatic feature is the skydeck, enclosed in thousands of square feet of glass. Like a starship in a sci-fi movie, the glass dome allows for unrivaled views in every direction, whether it’s gazing at the night sky from a Tahitian cove or taking in the lower Manhattan skyline by day.

De Basto and Oceanco are both known for creating concepts that can be turned into reality. Oceanco’s engineering department studied Cosmos’s feasibility and gave it an enthusiastic thumbs up. Cosmos’s glass panels are enclosed in metal frames and the supporting frame leans forward, not only to enhance the structural integrity, but also to improve the view. The UV-protected glass can be dimmed or even colored to match onboard moods. “While the glass looks simple, it is extremely complex in order to comply with all the regulations,” says De Basto. “This provides an interesting tension between being adventurous and being safe.”

The enclosed skydeck has a flexible layout with long lounges in the center, a piano bar forward, and many feet of open space between the sole and dome above. Forward via glass doors is an open observation deck with optional Jacuzzi. Aft is a large terrace for alfresco dining. The bow has a helipad, and on the rear cockpit, up long stairs down to the beach club, is an infinity pool.

Cosmos’s superstructure is much farther forward than most yachts, making it quite the contrast to the straight-edged, layered look of a traditional 300-foot yacht. De Basto has yet to reveal an accommodations plan for Cosmos, or even engines for that matter, but BMT Nigel Gee naval architects designed the hull for remote, bluewater voyaging, so it falls somewhere between a traditional cruising yacht and an explorer.

Luiz DeBasto and Oceanco Give a new Meaning to Cosmos

The renowned Dutch yacht builder Oceanco has teamed up once again with the acclaimed Miami-based yacht designer Luiz DeBasto  to imagine the breathtaking vessel before you, that was simply called  Cosmos . This eye catching 90-metre project shows off generous amounts of glass throughout, with the most incredible example being represented by a glass dome-shaped observation lounge on the upper deck that could literally take your breath away.

The impressive dome structure had to be extremely complex in order to comply with all the regulations, but it also ended up looking absolutely incredible, while offering a unique way of looking at the sea.  The glass panels themselves are UV protected and can be even dimmed or colored, depending on your mood and preferences, so privacy won’t be an issue with this innovative glass domed-structure.

Inside the Sky Deck, as this place was called, you might notice a flexible space where passengers will be able to dine right under the starry sky, from the comforts of a completely enclosed luxurious space – yes, this is the moment where the movie title becomes obvious. Moving on, there are many social areas on this vessel that will make the entire experience even more interesting, although the sailing part cannot be ignored either.

Comfortable and spacious, not to mention luxurious throughout, the Oceanco ‘s Cosmos  superayacht is bound to get any port authority excited to glance upon it. Admire beauty now, worry about exclusivity and costs later, right? I’m sorry to say there are no technical details available at this time, but we’ll probably get more news about this stunning vessel as soon as there’s a potential buyer out there.
