Rybovich

Many yachts call Rybovich in West Palm Beach (Also known as WPB for short) one of their home ports. It’s a handy base for those yacht owners who want to keep their boat based in the US or who charter heavily from the US. It’s also a huge favourite for yacht crew due to the extensive facilities onside at Rybovich Marina. More on that later.

Here’s an easy guide for Yacht Chefs arriving at Rybovich West Palm Beach for the first time.

rybovich yacht marina

Where to provision in Rybovich

Of course, the big-name provisioners deliver within Rybovich. Using provisioners is always going to make your life a lot easier, especially if you are wintering in Rybo and are down to a skeleton galley crew.

Generally, the security staff know who the provisioners are and you don’t have to let them know when you have a delivery coming, but, to be on the safe side, Give them a quick buzz. Especially if your provisioner of choice is a smaller company and may be unknown to the yard staff.

Another great help with the Rybovich Marina is that the staff of Rybo are always willing to lend a hand if they are available. This is great if you are doing smaller orders and you can get their attention for a cheeky golf cart ride to make life easier.

Rybovich West Palm Beach

Costco West Palm Beach

Costco West Palm beach is about a 20-minute drive away. When you first head out there, make sure you take your passport and boat papers. You will need this to set up your Costco membership.

Costco is somewhat like Metro in Europe. You will be able to get a lot of the basics in bulk. But they lack the guest quality side of things.

Unlike Europe, do not rely on Costco for produce. It tends to be very basic, but it’s ok for things like crew apples, tomatoes and bulk lettuce. You will not find high-end catering items like micro herbs and baby veg at Costco.

Meat products tend to be decent actually. You can buy vac-sealed striploin and tenderloin at decent prices while still being high quality. They are in the perfect proportions for crew meats assuming you are on a bigger vessel.

Dairy, cheeses and frozen produce are also really good here, as are the staples like rice and bread. The overall selection of goods isn’t so diverse for dry goods, but if you just need basics or you are not concerned about what brand of passata you buy, it’s worth stocking up.

Wholefoods West Palm

Wholefoods in West Palm is close to Rybo. Just head out to the Outlet Mall and its part of that. If you are short on a crew car and just need to grab a few things, the Rybo Bus will happily take you and pick you back up.

Wholefoods West Palm Beach has all the nice high-end products, perfect for guest food. You can also find a great selection of gluten-free and vegan products. They stock plenty of vegan cheese and nut milk, along with the impossible meat range.

Their produce is great quality and they have plenty of variety. Fruit platters are made easy with their exotic fruit range. They have an extensive organic section for produce too if you need it.

Whole foods also have a decent selection of imported cheeses and cold cuts.

Publix West Palm Beach

Publix is your generic sell-everything type of supermarket in Florida. Think of it like a Carrefour. It’s only 15 minutes drive from Rybovich, over on “the Island”.

Pick up the bulk of your dry goods, crew food, and produce here. You can buy generic and brand-name food items at Publix. They even have a small section with English food for the Brits on board!

There is plenty of parking and often the staff will help you with bags if you have a lot.

This Publix is easier to shop at for yacht provisions because of the parking, the other Publix in West Palm Beach is in the Cityalk mall, which can get busy.

Asian Supermarkets

West Palm Beach is lucky that its Asian supermarkets are in a little cluster. It’s a short 20-minute drive to them, and you should be able to bounce around between the 3 of them to find everything you need easily enough.

Food Town West Palm Beach

Food Town is a one-stop supermarket for pretty much all “ethnic” ingredients. It started as a Jamaican Supermarket and has since expanded to have a wide variety of foods from the Middle East, India, The Caribbean and Asia. If you have been to Carrefour St Martin recently, imagine that, but about 6 times bigger. It’s pretty amazing for out-of-the-ordinary ingredients.

Expect to find regular milk amongst the Paneer, Kefir and Goats milk. There must be about 200 different kinds of hot sauces from all over the world dotted down every aisle. They have a wide variety of fresh noodles, produce you may not even recognise, and cuts of meat your usual charter guest may not ask for yes, you need to order in advance for goat and some types of offal. Ask at the front desk.

Vinh Hung Oriental Market

They have a reasonable stock of dry goods such as sauces and noodles. The owners are Vietnamese so they tend to have more Viet and Chinese products. Their Japanese selection is very small. Grab a Ban Mi on your way out if you are hungry, it’s delicious!

Rybovich West Palm Beach

Let us know your favourite spots for provisioning in Rybovich West Palm Beach and we can add them to the list.

rybovich yacht marina

Local Bars and restaurants

West Palm Beach is a hot spot for casual dining options and semi-hipster bars. Almost everything is based on Clematis Street, which is a fun easy street to walk down. I’m sure if you use your spidey senses, you will be able to sniff out plenty of great watering holes on your won. But if you need a quick guide, check out the below spots.

E.R Bradleys Saloon

Open-air, an open-late tavern where ladies are known to dance on the bar, serving bar eats & breakfast. If the weather is good, this is a great spot to start or end your night. There’s plenty of outdoor seating and the vibe is casual, relaxed and very laid back. The food is generally American pub food, great to wash a few beers down with, but don’t expect fine dining in quality or presentation.

Address: 104 S Clematis St, West Palm Beach, FL 33401

Avocado Grill

A huge favourite amongst yacht crew at Rybovich, you will no doubt bump into plenty of crew you already know from the Rybo bar. You have been warned.

Expect the usual West Palm crowd, summery dresses and tidy tee’s or shirts for the guys, nothing extravagant, but it is dressier than Bradleys. They do an epic Brunch menu, and its the perfect spot for crew days off if you are lucky enough to swing a weekend off. The food menu should please even the fussiest crew member (yes, I’m looking at you, Gluten-free, Vegan, well, sometimes with a dairy intolerance when it suits type of crew) and the cocktails are easy to drink… Take plenty of money as you will end up spending longer here than you intended, and no doubt spend more too 😉

Address : 125 Datura Street, West Palm Beach, FL

Rybovich West Palm Beach

Getting around West Palm Beach

The drivers of the Rybovich Shuttle will drop you off and pick you up from designated points around West Palm Beach. Ask each driver, and make sure you grab their phone numbers. These are subject to change, so we haven’t listed them here.

If you choose uber or rideshare, expect to pay around $8, and it takes 8-12 minutes depending on traffic. Walking takes a bit of time, and there’s a bit of a dodgy area that you must walk through, so it is not advised to do so after dark.

If you are taking the crew car in, there is plenty of paid parking in secure carparking on Clematis Street. You will need a crew car to get to various supermarkets and other places, so hopefully your boat has organised one in advance.

The Brightline train service runs between West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami. It’s highly recommended over the somewhat dodgy local train. Pay a bit more and travel in style anyways, it’s safer, and cleaner, and they have wine and beer! 🙂 Word on the street is that they often give discounted rides for crew staying at Rybovich, so make sure to ask about it when you dock.

Rybovich West Palm Beach

Crew Days off in West Palm Beach

Finally, a day off after drop off day, relax. Or not… perhaps you want to explore a little further out from Rybo and see what else is about.

If you have access to a car and a whole weekend off, consider heading North… or South

  • Lake Okeechobee and its surroundings are great for nature lovers to get away, and it’s only a couple of hours’ drive. Book a place on Airbnb and make the most of the peace and quiet.
  • Head further up the coast to Disneyworld… it might be a bit cheesy, but it can be good to YOLO and just enjoy that childlike wonder too!
  • Cape Canaveral is also up that way, so check out their website to see if there are any rocket launches to watch. Nerd out and invite an engineer, they are always up for this sort of weekend!
  • Heading South, of course, you have Miami… Check into South beach and drink cocktails and hit the nightlife in Wynwood. release that inner hipster and eat every taco in sight!
  • Feeling like a longer drive? Easy- Florida Keys are a few hours further… Stop in Islamorada to stretch your legs and enjoy how different it is down there. West Palm will feel like a dream in no time.

If you only have a half-day off or a single day, don’t despair. The area around Rybo has a lot going on.

  • Hit up the Palm Beach outlets for a bit of shopping to refresh that wardrobe. The Rybovich shuttle can take you and pick you up if you need it.
  • The West Palm Beach Green Market is a fabulous market that pops up on Saturdays. Don’t expect to pick up mass quantities of produce for guests or crew, but there is a great selection of the usual farmers’ market items. Grab a coffee and wander the stalls.
  • There are escape rooms in West Palm Beach if you are looking for a crew team-building activity… I know, being stuck in a room with the crew may not be what you are looking for in your downtime, but, horses for courses.
  • Just kick back and enjoy the serenity by heading to the beach. It’s obvious, sure, but sometimes we forget the little things.

Dock walking in Rybovich

Dock walking isn’t allowed in Rybovich Marina. But there are of course people who slip through the cracks and manage to do it… but be warned, it is not recommended. There is a lot of staff working at Rybo, and they are vigilant.

The biggest threat of it all is losing your visa. You CANNOT dock walk on a B1/B2 visa, so if you are considering duckwalking in Rybo while holding this visa, understand that if you are caught by the wrong people, you will not just be thrown out of the marina. You will be in trouble with US immigration and consequently lose your visa and be banned from the US for some time. It is not worth it.

Rybovich West Palm Beach

Rybovich Marina

The crew facilities at Rybo far exceed most marinas you will have spent time in… it is constantly voted the number one marina in the US for yacht crew, and I dare say it may be one of the best in the world in terms of facilities.

Rybo boasts a crew area with a couple of BBQs, perfect for yacht chefs who need some fresh air. Give the tongs to some of the safer crew and sit back with a few cold ones, they are usually only too happy to take over cooking duties for the evening!

There is a decent size swimming pool along with plenty of sun loungers for the sun-seekers on board, and a cozy fire pit in the evenings for those late-night drinking sessions. The crew area at Rybo also has dart boards, a corn hole game, a pool table, table tennis, game consoles, oh yeah, and free WIFI.

Gym bunnies will be happy to know there is a very well equipped gym inside with blasting cold aircon. Lift those weights and make those gains while you have the time ashore!

The Rybo bar is perhaps most crew members’ favourite part of the marina. Sure, they do happy hour beers for a few bucks apiece, and $5 mimosas on Sundays, but they also offer a cracking food menu. There is a fresh sushi bar to the side, and also a regular “pub” type menu with burgers, salads, fish and fries.

Palm Beach International Boat Show

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show.

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north.

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

rybovich yacht marina

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

rybovich yacht marina

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests.

rybovich yacht marina

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

rybovich yacht marina

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

rybovich yacht marina

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

rybovich yacht marina

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

rybovich yacht marina

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million.

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

rybovich yacht marina

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

rybovich yacht marina

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

rybovich yacht marina

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

rybovich yacht marina

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

rybovich yacht marina

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

rybovich yacht marina

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

rybovich yacht marina

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

rybovich yacht marina

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

rybovich yacht marina

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

rybovich yacht marina

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Moscow - Russian Rivers and Waterways Port of Call

rybovich yacht marina

Moscow is a wonderful city to visit, and travelers on river ship cruise tours to or from St. Petersburg spend a few days in Moscow . This capital city of Russia was our last port on a river cruise tour, and we had about four days to see most of the highlights. Our first day we did an overview driving tour and rode the subway under the Mockba (Moscow) River to Red Square. The next day we toured the State Armory and the Kremlin.

These photos show some of the other highlights you can see with three or four days in Moscow .

The Northern River Terminal is located on the Moscow Canal in the northwest section of Moscow at the Khimki Reservoir.

Most river cruise ships sailing between Moscow and St. Petersburg use the ship as a hotel while in Moscow. Because of traffic, it's often a long drive into the city, but the sights along the way are interesting, and you only have to unpack once for the river cruise.

View of Downtown Moscow from Sparrow Hills

Sparrow Hills is the best place to get a great panoramic view of Moscow. The Sparrow Hills overlook the Mockba River and are near Moscow State University.

Novodevichy Convent in Moscow

Novodevichy Convent in Moscow was founded in 1524, and was once used as a sort of prison for the unwanted wives and sisters of the Tsars. Peter the Great sent both his first wife and his sister to Novodevichy. Since the convent had such famous nuns, it was very wealthy due to the many donations of the Tsars and their families. At one time in the 1700s, the cloister had over 36,000 serfs working in 36 villages. Novodevichy was ravaged by the French armies in 1812, but the brave nuns saved the buildings by disarming the fuses set to blow them up. The Soviets wanted to make the convent into a museum in the early 1920s, but it was again saved.

Novodevichy also has a cemetery with the graves of many famous Russians, including Nikita Khrushchev, Anton Chekhov, Raisa Gorbachev, and Yuri Nikulin.

View of the Mockba River in Moscow, Russia

The Mockba (Moscow) River runs into the Volga via the 79.5 mile long Moscow Canal.

River ships sailing between Moscow and St. Petersburg on the Baltic Waterways embark and disembark at the Northern River Terminal about an hour's drive from the city. The drive time can vary significantly in length because of the heavy Moscow traffic. The river looks peaceful here, as it winds around the cosmopolitan area of Moscow.

Cathedral of Christ the Redeemer (Cathedral of Christ the Savior) in Moscow

The Cathedral of Christ the Redeemer, also known as the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, is the largest church in Russia, holding 10,000 worshipers.

The original Cathedral of Christ the Savior was built over 44 years to celebrate the 1812 victory over Napoleon. It was completed in 1883. Stalin had the church destroyed in 1931, but it was rebuilt using mostly private funds in 1999. The new church is a replica of the original. Note that it took 44 years the first time and only 4 years the second to complete the church! Isn't modern technology impressive.

One interesting tidbit is that it took three attempts to blow up the church in 1931. Stalin planned to build a huge Palace of the Soviets on the cleared land, but engineers determined that the land was too boggy. In the 60 years intervening, the space was used for a variety of things, including a year-round swimming pool!

Vendors' Market and Ski Jump at Sparrow Hills in Moscow

The panoramic view of Moscow from Sparrow Hills is a stopover for most tour groups, so we were not surprised to see a large number of vendors. The ski jump was a surprise, but Moscow gets very cold in winter, so winter sports are very popular. This ski jump is near Moscow State University and has a great view of the city. Seeing this ski jump reminded me of the famous Holmenkollen Ski Jump in Oslo, which also has a great view of that northern capital city.

Russian Soldiers' Memorial in Victory Park in Moscow

Matryoshka dolls for sale in moscow.

I thought this display of dolls was beautiful! The Matryoshka nesting dolls range in price from just a few dollars to thousands of dollars.

Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow, Russia

This small band greeted us at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow. They played a variety of band music and made us all feel very welcome.

Grand Triumphal Arch Celebrates the Victory Over Napoleon in the War of 1812

This arch looks a little like the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and it is located near the Victory Park Metro Station in Moscow.

This Grand Triumphal Arch is decorated with the coats of arms from the 48 Russian provinces. To celebrate the victory over France in the war of 1812, it also includes bas-reliefs of the "Expulsion of the French." The arch was originally built in 1834, but has only been on this site since 1968.

It is a little ironic that this arch resembles the Paris Arc de Triomphe , which Napoleon built between 1806 and 1836 to celebrate his French victories.

Moscow Metro Station at the Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square)

This station near Red Square has many statues honoring the workers of Russia.

Moscow Metro Station near Victory Park

The Metro in Moscow is one of its shining industrial achievements. Construction on the Metro was begun in 1931 and continues today. The system has over 165 stations and 155 miles of track. Over 9300 trains, traveling sometimes as fast as 56 mph, navigate the huge system each day. Almost 10 million people ride the Moscow Metro every day, which is more than the New York and London systems combined. We found the Metro to be very efficient, with trains arriving every few minutes.

Navigating the Metro system can be somewhat of a problem for non-Russian speaking riders. Most of the signage is in Cyrillic only, and the stations are quite large. Trying to find the correct exit while walking long distances underground can be challenging.

On our cruise tour, we rode the Metro as a group with our program director from near Victory Park under the Mockba River to Red Square. Several of the group ventured out on their own during our time in Moscow, and many rode the Metro. They all returned with stories of getting lost underground, but none seemed the worse for the experience, and they all loved telling the tales.

Red Square in Moscow

Red Square in Moscow is a must-see for visitors to the capital city of Russia.

The Kremlin in Moscow, Russia

The Kremlin is a favorite of Moscow tourists. Inside these walls are buildings for the government of Russia, cathedrals, and the wonderful State Armory museum.

Taras Bulba Restaurant in Moscow

We enjoyed a traditional Ukrainian lunch at this cute restaurant in Moscow before checking in at our hotel.

Buses Wait for Passengers Outside Museum

River cruise tour groups are usually divided into groups for the duration of the tour. Each group had their own bus when touring.

Military Airplanes at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow, Russia

Although much of the military museum was indoors, there was quite a collection of planes, helicopters, missile launchers, and tanks outside.

Foreign Ministry Building, One of Moscow's Seven Stalinist-Gothic Skyscrapers

Seven skyscrapers with layers giving them a "wedding cake" appearance dot the Moscow skyline. The style is considered Stalinist-Gothic.

Russian and American War Veterans at the Central Museum of Armed Forces

Meeting with some World War II Russian War veterans was a highlight of our day at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow.

Rocket Launchers and Missiles at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow

The inside of this museum is particularly impressive, but you will need a guide since all of the signage is only in Russian.

Old Arbat Pedestrian Shopping Area in Moscow

We all enjoyed exploring the shops on this mile-long pedestrian shopping area.

Food prices were high in the tourist attraction, with two small pizzas, two small beers, and a bottle of water at an outdoor cafe costing $40. Many of our group ate at the large McDonalds, where prices were more reasonable.

Female Cosmonaut Model at Star City Cosmonaut Training Center near Moscow

Female cosmonauts play an important role in the Russian space program. In 1963, Valentina Tereshkova from Yaroslavl was the first woman in space.

Souvenir Shop in Old Arbat Shopping Area in Moscow

The area of Old Arbat had many English signs to attract the tourist trade.

Centrifuge at Star City Outside Moscow, Russia

This 18 meter centrifuge is the world's largest. The centrifuge weighs over 30000 tons, and the maximum load is 30 G, but most tests are run at 3 or 4 G.

A centrifuge ride is the first test for a cosmonaut, whose entire training school takes from five to eight years. The centrifuge can simulate the extreme force of gravity that cosmonauts (and astronauts) face when going into space. A centrifuge training session lasts about 30 minutes, and the trainee experiences both the centrifugal force as well as the spin of the pod he/she is riding in. Just typing this makes me a little queasy!

Cosmonaut's Bathroom Facilities on First Space Flights at Star City

Just like in the USA, everyone who visits the Star City cosmonaut training center near Moscow wants to know how cosmonauts "go to the bathroom". They have more sophisticated equipment today, but this contraption from the early space flights is fairly self explanatory.

Star City Tank Used for Cosmonaut Weightlessness Training near Moscow

This 12-meter deep pool is used to simulate weightlessness training. The pool is flooded and the cosmonauts perform repair tasks on the model of the International Space Station. SCUBA diving underwater is very similar to the weightless experience the cosmonauts experience when working in outer space.

Mir Space Station Replica at Star City near Moscow

The original Mir disintegrated when it fell to earth in 2001. Mir, which means peace in Russian, was launched in 1986.

Marvel Paull with Statue of Yuri Gagarin at Star City near Moscow

Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space, and the Star City Cosmonaut training center was named after him in 1968.

River Cruise Passengers with Yuri Onufrienko, Russian Cosmonaut at Star City

In case you can't tell, Yuri is the one in the middle. My famous traveling mother, Marvel Paull, is on the left and Dick, a cruise friend is on the right.

A highlight of our day in Star City was a visit with Yuri Onufrienko , a Russian cosmonaut who spent extended time in space at the Mir space station in 1996 and the International Space Station in 2001-2002. Yuri patiently took many questions from our small inquisitive group.

Cosmonaut Space Suit at Star City near Moscow

Cosmonauts sit in this position on take off. Thanks to Jerry G. for the tip about the sign. It says, "Don't touch!"

Stained Glass Window at Star City near Moscow

Program directors at farewell dinner in moscow.

After 16 days of discovery, learning, and fun, we had a farewell dinner with the six Program Directors - Evgeny, Olga, Vladimir, Svetlana, Violetta, and Marina - in Moscow.

The Kremlin is a triangular, walled citadel in the center of Moscow. The Kremlin is considered by most to be the heart of the city. First conceived in the 12th century, the Kremlin (which means fortress) was expanded by Tsar Ivan III (Ivan the Great) during the 15th century. His architects designed the magnificent Cathedral of the Assumption and the Faceted Palace, and the Kremlin was an interesting mix of both Russian and Renaissance styles. During the Soviet time of the 1930s, many of the Kremlin buildings were destroyed or vandalized, and the complex remained closed to the public until 1955.

Today the Kremlin is home to the Russian President and his administration. Many buildings are open to the public, but you may need to be with a guide (check in advance).

I visited the Kremlin when in Moscow on a Russian Waterways cruise tour from St. Petersburg.

The Kremlin was also one of the 21 finalists for the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Red Square in Moscow, Russia

Red Square's name has nothing to do with Communism or Soviet Russia. The old Russian word for "beautiful" and "red" was the same; the square was supposed to be called "Beautiful Square". Red Square has been the center of Moscow activity since the 16th century when the Tsar cleared the area and allowed vendors, shoppers, and businesses to fill the square. Today this square is surrounded by the Moscow Kremlin, the State Historical Museum, GUM Shopping Mall , and St. Basil's Cathedral .

Many of the important events of the last three hundred years in Russia have been marked by parades or demonstrations in Red Square. Anyone who enters Red Square will have memories from TV or movie reels of this magnificent public square. Those of us who grew up during the Cold War era can remember the parades of soldiers, tanks, and other armaments past Lenin's Tomb just outside the Kremlin Wall. The World War II generation remembers Red Square as the site of a huge victory celebration at the end of the war.
