Was ist Riverboat?

As a headlining artist, The Broadway Sinfonietta made its live full orchestra debut concert presented by Carnegie Hall Citywide and signed with Sony Masterworks to develop and release recordings of Schmidt’s pop orchestra arrangements. Fresh off the heels of a 70+ city nationwide tour, the Sinfonietta’s reach and impact has grown exponentially, now encompassing both a production arm (Sinfonietta Productions), as well as a management arm (Sinfonietta Creative Management), which provides representation and advocacy for women musicians across the industry as a whole.

The American Queen docks in Vicksburg, Mississippi, May 26, 2023.

Memphis has bet big on Mississippi River cruises, but the industry took a hit this week when American Queen Voyages — one of three companies cruising the Mississippi — shut down.

The company said it couldn’t rebound after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The overnight cruise industry was especially affected by changes in travel preferences and, as a result, (American Queen Voyages) has become financially unsustainable,” the company said in a statement.

Lee Hendrix is no stranger to the instability of the industry. He’s worked as a “riverlorian,” or river historian, on board the American Queen through several ownership changes and bankruptcies. His first stint on board was from the late 1990s to 2008. When the company shuttered in 2008, he left for a job with the Army Corps of Engineers as a way to stay on the river with more job security.

“It’s a tough business because you’re so dependent on the vagaries of the economy,” he said.

Hendrix returned to the American Queen a couple years ago, after retiring from the Corps. Now, he’s witnessing another bankruptcy that’s left the American Queen sitting empty at a dock.

Even as the dust settles, he’s optimistic there’s still a future for the boat he worked on, which was the company’s namesake.

“We expected that there was going to be some kind of disruption, but we somehow expected the American Queen would survive,” Hendrix said of the boat itself. “That’s sacred ground for me.”

American Queen Voyages — under various names and ownership — has a tumultuous history. There was a bankruptcy in 2001, followed by a stint of sales and closures until 2008, when the fleet went out of commission. In 2011, it returned, even headquartered in Memphis for several years, and ran continually for more than a decade until its parent company, Hornblower Group, filed for bankruptcy this week.

Kevin Kane, president and CEO of Memphis Tourism, said American Queen’s closure was an unexpected hit to local river tourism — the city is expected to lose 10,000 hotel room nights annually because of it — but he’s confident the market is still there.

Ebbs and flows

For two decades, Memphis’ investment in overnight river cruises has been up and down.

Plans to construct Beale Street Landing, the city’s biggest dock, started in the early 2000s and dragged on through three mayoral administrations. In that time, Hurricane Katrina hit, the river’s overnight cruise industry collapsed and the company that built the American Queen went bankrupt in 2001 — not for the last time.

American Queen returned, despite multiple ownership changes and business closures, but shuttered again in 2008 — as did its only competitor — leaving Memphis with a dock under construction but no cruises running on the Mississippi River.

When American Queen returned to the river, again, the company’s decision to headquarter in Memphis in 2011 was a vote of confidence for river tourism. Within the decade, however, American Queen moved its headquarters out of the city.

Then, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic halted all travel.

By the time cruises started up again post-pandemic, cities along the Mississippi River, including Memphis, were betting that the industry would make a comeback. Their confidence was boosted when Viking Cruises launched a Mississippi River itinerary in 2022, bringing a third company to the river.

Memphis Tourism previously estimated cruises have an annual economic impact of $100 million on Memphis and are responsible for 20,000 hotel room nights yearly in the city. American Queen alone was responsible for half of that hotel traffic.

Related: Burgeoning Mississippi riverboat industry grapples with increasing threats of flooding, drought

Overnight cruises on the Mississippi River aren’t cheap. The lowest tickets for a week-long cruise are a few thousand dollars, and Kane said cruising’s affluent customer base brings a lot of money to Memphis .

At one point, Memphis was planning a $35 million expansion of its docks — an indication of the city’s confidence that river cruises were here to stay — but the idea to build an additional dock at Greenbelt Park was scrapped late last year. All that funding will go to Beale Street Landing instead.

However, even with American Queen’s exit, Kane said the city still needs a second dock to accommodate the two remaining cruise companies: Viking and American Cruise Lines.

“We still need expanded docks,” Kane said. “River cruising is still very important to the Memphis hospitality industry.”

Sinking ship

American Queen Voyages retired the smallest of its three Mississippi River boats in late 2022. Then, last year, it scrapped its trips on the Great Lakes and sold the boats that ran those tours. At the time, the company characterized the decision as a move to refocus on its river cruises.

In late 2022, as American Queen was rolling back its services, Viking was launching its Mississippi River tours, and American Cruise Lines was adding more boats, despite the hits all three companies took when the river dropped to record lows during recent summers . Droughts forced them to change itineraries, offer refunds and, in some cases, cancel tours completely , as river conditions made it challenging — and in some cases, impossible — to travel along the river.

There were other signs of trouble in the months leading up to American Queen’s closure. The company’s president, Cindy D’Aoust, left the company last fall after about a year in the role, according to news reports. A few months later, the company canceled its season-opening tours in February, and several travel agency groups stopped booking trips on the American Queen.

Those troubles came to a boiling point in late February when its parent company, Hornblower, filed for bankruptcy and laid off 500 employees. American Queen has canceled all future cruises and is offering refunds to customers. The company is up for sale, but if there are no buyers, it’ll shut down.

“Whatever happened to them, I can’t explain it,” Kane said. “I don’t think river cruising is on the decline. I’m not the least bit concerned.”

  • frazierb2024 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to learn about the "Old-Time Charm" of Savannah in a relaxed way. Highly recommend this riverboat tour to see Savannah from the water! You will learn about the action of the Savannah port and also about the military forts surrounding Savannah and the city's role in the Civil War. Definitely recommend if you are a huge history buff! My mom and I loved the old-school charm of the actual Riverboat and we had a gorgeous weather day, so we really enjoy sitting on the top deck and getting to see the scenery and wildlife around us. The narrator of the boat tour is an aspiring actor in Savannah, so he was extremely entertaining with his story telling and history narration about the city and even kept it light with a few jokes and pop-culture tidbits! I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a sit back and relax activity, while you also learn a ton! Plus, there is a great concessions stand on the boat where you can order drinks and food from. You may even see some beautiful wildlife too while on the boat as dolphins are a popular sight in the river! There is a live cannon blast as the boat passes Old Fort Jackson down the river, so make sure to bring ear-plugs if you are sensitive to that. The tour guide gave us plenty of warning before it happened, but it still caught us off guard. Another thing to note is to get in line earlier rather than later for the boat ride because the seating is first come, first serve, and they have backward facing seats if you want to avoid those. Although, the boat is moving at a pace that isn't upsetting for people prone to motion-sickness (aka my mom!). Read more Written February 25, 2024

Enjoyed being on the water, but the narration was difficult to hear. As other reviewers stated, the views are primarily industrial. Other river traffic is interesting to see, but not a scenic nature cruise. Read more Written February 10, 2024
  • taber 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointing Cruise Very disappointing experience. A waste of money. We thought we were going of a paddle wheeler boat but it wasn't, there was no paddle wheel. There were only 2 speakers on the main deck of the boat so we could not hear the commentary. There wasn't really anything to look at while you sat on the boat. The windows were dirty. We did pass by a fort but could not hear any information about it. Read more Written February 3, 2024
  • avantikaw2023 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Save your Money Savannah Riverboat Cruises are an overpriced touist trap. We really regret purchasing this experience, and would not recommend it to others. We participated in the Sunday Brunch on New Years Day. The food was awful; lukewarm, poorly made, with very limited options. Although we had paid more for our tickets, we were the last to be served. It was utter chaos, with very little attentiveness and poor communication given to our party. The staff were unhelpful and rude, and poorly dressed with stained uniforms. The announcer/captain was obnoxious, with sophmoric humor sprinkled with shoutouts to corporate sponsors like Walmart. When you purchase your tickets, know that you are paying for a novelty Savannah experience. There is so much that this city has to offer. I would avoid this experience at all costs, and invest your time at one of the many lovely resturants or rooftop bars located throughout the city. This was a huge disappointment for our family. • JacqWilliams 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointed Vegan My husband and I were excited to attend the New Year's Eve Gala Cruise on the Georgia Queen Riverboat. As a vegan, I called in advance to ensure that I would have meal options. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the limited options provided during the event. Despite being told that the staff would be able to accommodate my dietary restrictions, I was only able to eat two of the courses which were both salads and the main meal was a spoonful of overcooked quinoa over asparagus which looked like a plate of slop, see picture below. This made me feel singled out as an outcast. Considering the high price of the tickets, I feel that the advertisements should clearly state if there are no vegan options or there should be a price adjustment. Paying $250 for a plate of iceberg lettuce and strawberries is unfair. I believe that a refund or some other type of accommodation is deserved in this situation. I must say that the staff serving the food were all very nice and should be applauded. Read more Written January 4, 2024

  • MontanaEjp 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Do not recommend this overpriced cruise with little to learn Not worth the money! Do NOT recommend. We purchased tickets assuming it was an amazing cruise because we have always seen the ship docked on the river. Pros: We saw quite a few dolphins, a bald eagle flying overhead, it was a beautiful day to spend some time outside. The narrator was funnier toward the end. Cons: Very expensive to see docked ships and not really much else. Savannah is full of rich history and the stories, information, or facts that was shared was minimal. Such a shame. But if the tour has to pair with what you see around the ship, it makes sense. Nothing to see aside from some ships and tug boats and the River front. Narration was boring. I couldn’t hear half of it depending on where you were standing on the top deck. It was clear as day if you were inside but who wants to sit inside on a beautiful day? I wish I had read the reviews instead of assuming it was wonderful! Read more Written January 1, 2024

The dance floor was busy, even crowded at points. I think most people had a okay time. The food however was not up to par, and serviced buffet style. Bar service was horrible, people waited in line for a hour, for overpriced drinks. I personally wouldn't recommend and was not impressed to say the least. I think your money could be better spent elsewhere. There's so many nice restaurants and great things to experience here. Read more Written January 1, 2024

Product overview: 2 hr savannah riverboat dinner cruise with onboard entertainment.

Buses, Streetcars, and Trolleybuses

Moscow's public land transport network covers the entirety of the city: buses and streetcars arrive with the same frequency as metro trains, and many routes connect the city's center and its outskirts. A system of night buses operates daily between 12:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., running from the Kitay-Gorod metro station on thirteen routes to various Moscow districts (as well as to Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo airports). There is also a tourist trolleybus route from Komsomolskaya Square to Novoryazanskaya Street. You can pay for public land transport rides with the Troika card or buy a ticket directly from the driver. For an easier way to plan out your route and find out the timetable, use the Moscow Transport app or mobile maps.

River Transport

The navigation season on the Moskva River begins in mid-April and ends in late fall. Throughout this period, you can see motorships running along the river. Almost any route is suitable for a cruise, with the ships circling around the city center and going to the North River Terminal and the Kolomenskoye Park embankment. It is best to book tours in advance (there are several different companies to choose from). Payment options depend on the type of the tour.

There is only one regular river route in Moscow, and it goes from the North River Terminal to Khimki. The ticket price is 350 rubles, but in the morning and evening hours you can pay with a Troika card at the standard fare.

Commuter Trains

Trains run in eleven directions from nine Moscow railway stations. Most often, commuter trains are used to travel out of town or to dachas, but they also serve to connect certain districts and metro stations, as well as help prevent the metro from overcrowding during rush hours. High-speed trains, also known as Aeroexpress trains, connect Moscow airports with the city center. You can find diagrams of the railway lines on the website of the Central Suburban Passenger Company. Although normal rail tickets can only be purchased at the box office, you can buy Aeroexpress tickets in advance on the website or using the mobile app.
