If you're new to touring and looking to buy your first motorhome, it's time to get closer to the Edge. Nick Harding takes a look at the six-berth 476.

There’s a new contender in the budget class for coachbuilt motorhomes. Swift has the Edge. The firm hasn’t just kept the price down (all other factors considered), but the weights, too. It has also fully managed expectations. Searingly good value, the Edge is definitely one to watch.

If 2020 turns out to be the Year of the Budget Motorhome, here’s the range that could spearhead it all. Swift, the UK’s most prolific ‘van manufacturer, has launched a new line-up where low price is everything.

The Edge, designed for families, offers five models, and we took an early look at the six-berth 476, one of three overcabs.

On the road for £50,125 might not strike you as ‘budget’. But unless you’re keen and can grab an early Edge with Euro 6b engine – in which case, the 476 would come in at £48,255 – your vehicle will have one of Fiat’s latest Euro 6d engines, which adds vehicle excise duty of £2315.

At the time of writing, and despite intense lobbying by the NCC, these charges will apply to almost every new motorhome purchased with a Euro 6d engine.

The 476 has the format to cope with six – passengers and sleepers. The double dinette offers belted seating for four, with a short settee nearside. There’s a rather narrow side-fixing table, but there is an extension to slot in and clip on. There’s one small window in the lounge.

If I have one niggle, it’s that Swift isn’t the sole firm to call a budget model family-friendly, only to cut back on a critical area: the kitchen. For many reasons, touring with children means relying more on on-board food preparation and storage – requiring large-capacity fridges and full cookers.

This Edge makes do with a Thetford Triplex cooker (three gas rings, combined oven/grill) and a small Dometic fridge (albeit with removable freezer section). But I appreciate that a lot of cost has been saved here.

The washroom facilities include a tap that extends for showering in an area that’s part-lined. There’s also a swivel-bowl toilet, a high-level shelf and a locker under the basin.

The overcab bed is an impressive size, with plenty of headroom. There’s only one window here and the single reading lamp in on the opposite side, though.

The main sleeping area is at the back, on high-level fixed single beds. Again, there’s one side window, plus a standard rooflight; but this is what helps keep the price so low. But, because there’s no overhead lockers (see Storage below), on the plus side, there’s less feeling of being hemmed in. Better still (for many), you can sit fully upright in bed.

Cupboards/wardrobes at the foot of each rear bed include hanging rails and two-way access. No high-level lockers here is another cost-saver.

Linen Exchange

This service is included in the Inclusive Pack. This allows you to stop into the closest branch during your hire and swap your linen (pillow, pillowcase, duvet (doona), sheets, towels, and bath mat) over for a fresh, clean set. Please notify the branch ahead of time as this will ensure the items are available and ready for you when you arrive.

*Solar Panels

Solar power panels provide a trickle charge to the 12V battery power supply only, much like the engine battery does when driving. The solar panels will not charge over and above the current draw on the battery, nor will they fully charge it. To fully charge your house battery we recommend plugging into 240V power every two days.

A child seat (from birth until approximately four years) or booster seat (for children aged between four and seven years) can be fitted to the forward-facing seats in the rear (where the two anchor points are positioned).  Child and booster seats are an additional hire item.

Helpful Tips

We recommend you plug into 240 volt power on your first night and then every two or so days for the house battery to fully charge. The speed of the 12 volt battery drainage will depend on the climate and how often it is used. A full charge takes between 14 to 16 hours and needs to be done at a campground every two or so days.

Top-up the fresh water and empty the waste water every one to two days.

Empty the toilet cassette every one to two days, or as needed. The waste water tank and toilet cassette must be emptied at an authorised dump station. If you are staying in a Holiday Park, you will have access to one there. Otherwise, use the thl Roadtrip App to search for the closest one. Top-up and empty at every opportunity and you won’t have to worry about a thing!

Lastly, always remember, have your keys with you when you are outside the motorhome.

Montana State beats Montana 85-70 for third straight Big Sky Tournament title

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Robert Ford III scored 22 points and No. 5 seed Montana State beat third-seeded Montana 85-70 on Wednesday night to win the Big Sky Conference Tournament championship and an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Montana State (17-17) advances to the Big Dance for the third straight season and sixth time overall. Montana (23-11) was aiming for its 12th appearance after sweeping the Bobcats during the regular season.

Ford made 8 of 13 shots with two 3-pointers and 4 of 5 free throws for Montana State. He added nine rebounds, five steals and four assists. John Olmsted totaled 16 points and five rebounds off the bench. Eddie Turner III had 15 points, Brandon Walker 14 and Tyler Patterson 12.

Josh Vazquez had 20 points to lead the Grizzlies. Aanen Moody and Laolu Oke each scored 14. Brandon Whitney pitched in with 13 points and six rebounds.

Moody was fouled on a 3-pointer and made all three free throws, Josh Vazquez followed with a 3-pointer and Montana closed out the half on an 8-2 run to lead 38-32 at halftime.

Montana took an 11-point lead three times in the first three minutes of the second half, the last at 49-38 on Moody’s layup.

Montana State trailed by seven when Turner scored in the paint and Ford and Patterson hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Bobcats up 51-50 with 12:25 remaining. Patterson hit two free throws and nailed a 3-pointer to help the Bobcats pull away from a 53-all tie to a 62-53 advantage with 8:30 left to play.

The run grew to 14-0 and Montana State led 67-53 before Moody’s layup for the Grizzlies ended the spurt. First-year coach Matt Logie’s Bobcats weren’t threatened from there.

Weber State is the only other team to win three straight Big Sky tourney titles, doing so from 1978-80.

North Farmington uses quick start to grab MHSAA boys basketball Division 1 finals berth

EAST LANSING — North Farmington High School and Orchard Lake St. Mary’s are only seven miles apart, yet they will meet, roughly 70 miles to the west, to determine basketball supremacy across the entire state in Saturday’s MHSAA Division 1 final.

North Farmington (24-2) grabbed the second berth by disposing of Zeeland West on Friday afternoon at Breslin, 58-39. It's the second finals appearance for the Raiders, with the other coming in 2016 (a loss to U-D Jesuit).

North Farmington wasted no time Friday, in their first trip to Breslin Center since. The Raiders quickly jumped out to a 7-0 lead by converting on four of five possessions, featuring a pair of long 2-pointers by Tyler Spratt.

But after being held scoreless for the first four minutes, Zeeland West (20-8) answered over a 90-second span to take an 8-7 lead. Lukas Baker finally broke the scoring drought with a layup, then added a 3-pointer from the corner to tie the game. Myles Steffen split a pair of free throws to give the Dux a short-lived lead — which turned out to be their only advantage of the game.

But then North Farmington resumed doing what it does best — working the ball around, mixing up defensive rotations and generally leaving opponents wondering what was coming next.

Back-to-back 3s by Landon Williams and D.J. Morgan spurred North Farmington to close out the first quarter up 15-11.

“I’m a guy who tries to get going and get my teammates going and get our confidence up,” Williams said. “The biggest thing I’ve learned in my four years is that the work is going to happen, but it’s that confidence, that mental aspect and that IQ that’s really going to win games — the close ones, the heated ones — so mentally, those runs are big for us and give us momentum going into the next quarters.”

The first six minutes of the second quarter didn't offer much, but North Farmington closed out the frame strong. Spratt scored North Farmington’s next eight points on a pair of free throws and consecutive 3s from the top of the key to open up a nine-point Raider lead.

Behind Spratt and Morgan, North Farmington continued on a hot streak in the third quarter, outscoring Zeeland West, 23-14. Spratt’s baskets on back-to-back trips enabled North to stretch its lead to 37-23, and Morgan had two 3-pointers in the final 90 seconds to set the score at 50-33 with a quarter to play.

“My objective was to get my guys in the right spot and do my part to help them close out,” said Williams, who had five assists to go with his 12 points. “Obviously Tyler was hot in that first half and I tried to get him the ball. Closing out that third quarter, D.J. had been hitting all night. I was looking for my own shot, but I’m always looking for my teammates as well. The way that we work together is a blessing.”

Despite the lead, North Farmington was actually outshot by Zeeland West over that span, 55.6%-47.6%. Still, North was able to clamp down defensively and force the Dux into taking 3-pointers; they hit just five of 20.

“Credit to North Farmington — they play a style that is very difficult to go against,” Zeeland West coach David Klyn said. “They create chaos and they’re really good at it. It’s a different defense that I’ve never seen before, and when you get down to them, it makes it so hard to come back. You can’t really run sets against it, you can’t really run plays against it because it’s constant trapping.

North Farmington loaded the box to neutralize Mr. Basketball finalist Merritt Alderink. The Indiana State-bound senior managed just three free throw makes — and no field goals — over the first three quarters of the game. After hitting three fourth-quarter shots, Alderink finished with a team-high 9 points before checking out with 1:14 to play.

“I think a lot of that is the type of basketball we play,” North Farmington coach Todd Negoshian said. “Our trap, it kind of takes big kids out of it, and makes your perimeter kids really have to play well. (Alderink) is a talented kid and we knew we had to focus on him. If we were going to lose today, it had to be by somebody else. Once he gets going, he’s hard to stop.”

Spratt had a game-high 19 points for North Farmington and Morgan finished with 9.

Despite Friday’s loss, Zeeland West can look back on several program firsts this season, including its first district title, first regional championship and first trip to Breslin. The Dux earned their trip by knocking off heavily-favored Muskegon — a 2023 finalist — 53-52 in Tuesday’s quarterfinal.

Visiting us from overseas? If your license is in a language other than English it must be accompanied by a current international driving permit issued in the same country as the driver’s licence was issued. An accredited English translation will be accepted in lieu of an international driving permit.​​​​

Linen Exchange

This service is included in the Inclusive Pack. This allows you to stop into the closest branch during your hire and swap your linen (pillow, pillowcase, duvet (doona) or sleeping bags (4WDs), sheets and towels) over for a fresh, clean set. Please notify the branch ahead of time as this will ensure the items are available and ready for you when you arrive.

*Solar Panel

Solar power panels provide a trickle charge to the 12V battery power supply only, much like the engine battery does when driving. The solar panels will not charge over and above the current draw on the battery, nor will they fully charge it. To fully charge your house battery we recommend plugging into 240V power every two days. 

Child Restraints

A  maximum of two child restraints   can be fitted to this camper .   

A child seat (from birth until approximately four years) or booster seat (for children aged between four and seven years) can be fitted to the forward-facing seats in the rear (where the two anchor points are positioned).  Child and booster seats are an additional hire item.

Helpful Tips 

Do not cook, use a heater or smoke within the tent or awning area. 

Slightly open the tent windows at night to minimise condensation. 

Do not step on the roof, canopy or bonnet of the vehicle. Always use the tyre step provided to access the rooftop tent or ground tent stored on the roof rack. 

Always double check to ensure you have stored away the awning and tent securely before travel. 

Lastly, always remember, have your keys with you when you are outside the camper. 

Bring your pet

Well-behaved dogs or cats are welcome to come along for the trip. A fee per hire applies. This is to cover additional cleaning processes that we undertake. For more information on bringing a pet please see our guidance here .

1 Flexible option of either a fixed bed or U shape lounge conversion in the rear

A club lounge or a fixed spring mattress.

A club lounge that can be easily set up as a large double bed, giving you that extra freedom to travel your way. Don't want to make your bed up each day? KEA does offer the ability to modify this part of the vehicle into a permanent bed if you so desire, fixed in place it can be a proper spring mattress too with a large storage boot hidden underneath, accessed internally.

Spacious Storage

The gargantuan full-width rear storage hatch is ideal for housing sullage hoses, power cords, camping chairs and the like. There’s also an LPG bin to safely conceal a 9kg gas cylinder, along with an 80W solar panel, 82L fresh water tank and 82 grey water tank.

Nebraska meets Indiana , seeks its first Big Ten tournament semifinal berth

Since entering the Big Ten prior to the 2011-12 season, Nebraska hasn't exactly draped itself in conference tournament glory.

The Cornhuskers have won just five of their 17 games in Big Ten postseason play. They haven't posted a victory in this 14-team festival since 2019. They've never made it past the quarterfinals.

But because the Huskers (22-9) received a double bye -- their reward for earning the No. 3 seed -- they took the express route to this year's Big Ten tournament quarterfinals in Minneapolis.

They will meet sixth-seeded Indiana (19-13) in the final game on Friday's tournament schedule. The Hoosiers needed an unlikely tip-in from backup guard Anthony Leal with five seconds left to beat 11th-seeded Penn State 61-59 Thursday night for their fifth straight victory.

"We beat a good team tonight. They've had our number," Indiana coach Mike Woodson said. "Nebraska's had our number this season as well, so we've got to go back now and watch a little film and get ready for Nebraska."

They probably discovered they needed to watch a lot of film. During the regular season, Nebraska knocked off Indiana twice by nearly identical scores -- 86-70 on Jan. 3 in Lincoln, Neb., and 85-70 on Feb. 21 in Bloomington, Ind.

Huskers guard Keisei Tominaga starred in both games. The second-team All-Big Ten selection stacked up 48 points combined and sank four 3-pointers in each contest. In the Feb. 21 loss, Indiana big men Mackenzie Mgbako, Kel'el Ware and Malik Reneau combined for 54 points -- a strategy the Hoosiers figure to follow again Friday night.

While the Hoosiers need to capture the Big Ten tournament to get into the NCAA Tournament, the Huskers probably don't need to advance to their first Big Ten semifinal to clinch the program's first NCAA Tournament berth since 2014. The Huskers entered Thursday's games as the nation's No. 38 team according to the NET rankings and No. 30 per KenPom.

"We're in a good place," said Nebraska's Fred Hoiberg, who shared the Big Ten's Coach of the Year award with Purdue's Matt Painter. "I feel really good about things at this time. We just can't get complacent. We've got to stay hungry.

"This time of the year is about a lot of mental preparation. We're adding actions to try to maybe steal a much-needed basket. We're working on special situations. But this is the fun time with what we have right now -- all the blood, sweat and tears you go through to get to this time of year and be playing in meaningful games in March."

South Dakota State secures another Summit title, NCAA berth with 67-54 win over North Dakota State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Paige Meyer had 18 points, Tori Nelson scored seven of her nine during a 14-0 fourth-quarter run and South Dakota State earned its 12th trip to the NCAA Tournament with a 67-54 win over North Dakota State in the Summit League Tournament championship on Tuesday.

The Jackrabbits (27-5) defended their title when they forced the second-seeded Bison (21-11) into six-straight misses while they turned a one-point lead with six minutes to go into a 61-46 lead with 1:43 left.

Meyer start the run with a layup, Mesa Byom had a three-point play and then Nelson scored seven straight, sandwiching a 3-pointer around two layups. Meyer capped it with two free throws.

“We made some shots,” long-time South Dakota State coach Aaron Johnson said. “How about Tori Nelson, senior? My heart goes out to her, she didn’t finish (sprained ankle), hopefully we get some good news there. But a big 3, a couple big drives to the basket. She really played like you want to see a senior play.”

The Jackrabbits have won 20 straight since back-to-back losses to ranked Gonzaga and Creighton.

Brooklyn Meyer had 15 points and three blocks for South Dakota State, which made its first NCAA berth in 2008-09, its first season of eligibility. Madison Mathiowetz added 12 points and Byom had 11 with nine rebounds.

Heaven Hamling had 16 points for North Dakota State, in its first-ever title game. and Elle Evans had 11.

South Dakota State outscored North Dakota State by one point in each of the first three quarters to lead 42-39 entering the fourth quarter. The Jackrabbits never led by more than five until Brooklyn Meyer’s three-point play made it 47-41. But Hamling made two free throws and her 3 with 6:30 to go cut the deficit to 47-46.
