One thing that is certain is that the Aquila 47 Molokai is the first catamaran of its kind. Until now, if you wanted a center console catamaran with the speed, ride and fishability required for overnight runs to the canyons, banks or islands, your sleeping accommodations were going to consist of a beanbag on deck or, at best, an airbed on the console floor.

The Aquila 47 Molokai, though, combines real offshore fishing chops with not only a head and shower but also a spacious, air-conditioned stateroom with a queen-sized island berth. Two entry doors provide easy access, while large overhead and side windows flood the cabin with natural light during the day and let you stargaze from your bed at night.

Powered by twin 600 hp or quad 400 hp Mercury Verado outboards, the Aquila 47 Molokai delivers thrilling performance and a smooth, predictable ride, thanks to her aggressive twin-step hull design and strong, lightweight vacuum-infused construction. Joystick piloting makes close-quarters maneuvering a breeze, while a 1,048-gallon (3,967 Liter) fuel capacity brings any horizon within reach.

Underway, seven protected helm seats in two air-conditioned rows keep your crew safe and comfortable, while state-of-the-art Raymarine electronics, C-Zone digital switching and a custom-tuned Fusion audio system put information and entertainment at your fingertips.

On the fishing grounds, pressurized livewells fed by a Hooker sea chest keep your bait lively, while cavernous fish boxes accommodate the largest fish and longest trips. Electric reel outlets provide power for deep-dropping, and the carbon fiber hardtop is factory reinforced for outriggers and custom towers.

The ergonomics of Fountaine Pajot catamarans have been designed to facilitate manoeuvring at the helm, enabling a small crew (2 persons) to manoeuvre the boat easily, both in port and at sea. Aquila 47 Molokai: 2024 Boat Buyers Guide

Recognized globally, Aquila Power Catamarans are crafted in what the company calls “one of the world’s largest, newest, most vertically integrated and ‘greenest’ yacht production facilities.” 

Sino Eagle Yachts, Aquila’s parent company, has more than 40 years of manufacturing experience, featuring advanced composites and new vacuum-molding techniques. In 2012, the firm worked with award-winning designers to launch Aquila Power Catamarans.  “Aquila” is derived from the Latin for “eagle,” a fitting name for a boat with such power, grace, and majesty. 

Aquila’s growing lineup of boats from 28 to 70 feet caters to the desires of both the leisurely adventurer and thrill-seeking explorer—and anglers in either category.

Their yachts feature wide beams and high bridge decks, the latter to minimize below-­deck slapping in choppy water conditions. Outboard engines are positioned well apart for agile, precise driving. The result is performance and comfort in elegant packages.

Aquila 47 Molokai

A rock-solid offshore-fishing center-console ­catamaran with plenty of power and fuel capacity, and ­construction ready to take on any seas, ­Aquila’s new 47 Molokai also offers all the ­comforts a ­family might request, from cozy sleeping ­accommodations to posh entertainment ­appointments.  

Performance and durability are thanks to reduced-drag twin-stepped hulls, and lightweight but strong carbon/epoxy construction.

The dual-entry cabin ­features a head, shower, air conditioning, ­queen-size island berth, and large overhead and side windows. Outside is seating for up to 17, including seven protected helm seats.

Fishing-ready, the 47 ­Molokai has 16 gunwale-­mounted and six transom-­mounted rod holders. In-deck and coffin-box fish and gear storage­—and transom livewell capacity—is generous. Among options are tuna tubes and in-deck livewells. 

The 47 Molokai offers both speed and range: It is thriftiest with its standard package of two 600’s at 4,000 rpm and 34.5 mph, with an 870-mile range. But bumping it to 5,000 rpm produces 46 mph and shortens the range by only 10 miles. Additional package options are available.

Leopard 47 Powercat Review

Robertson and Caine – Leopard 47 Power Cat

The Leopard 47 Power Cat is a yacht born from many innovations, and a design that has won over many owners (even sailors) and charter companies too.

The Leopard 47 PC is a collaboration between South African boatbuilder Robertson and Caine and California sail- and power-catamaran designers Morelli & Melvin.  Debuting in 2009, the 47-footer forms the basis for island charter fleets and is found in private ownership all over the world.

The Leopard 47PC was designed from the ground up to be an open water yacht with the displacement necessary to carry endless cruising gear, and maintain its waterline.  Being a multihull means it’s very comfortable on the move and also stable at anchor, a feature that monohull power-yachts cannot compete with unless equipped with expensive active stabilizers. 

For the power plant of this vessel, the early model of 47PC were fitted with the Volvo 150’s.  These were then switched to the amazing Cummins 150’s, which powers the majority of the four cabin 47PC’s built.  Then due to EPA compliancy regulations they switched to the John Deere 150’s the last year of the run.

Of the yachts powered by two straight drive Cummins 150HP turbo charged four cylinder engines, this yacht offers high reliability and efficiency, especially in the 12-15 knot cruising speed.  Higher speeds (17-18 knots) are achievable, at the expense of higher fuel consumption, though still massively lower than equal size power boats.  If you chose to cruise at maximum fuel efficiency, you can run on just one engine at half-throttle (2000 rpm), which gives a healthy 8 to 9 knots.  At this speed you’re only using 2-3 GPH, which means you have  range of roughly 1000 nautical miles using the built-in 320 gallon tanks only.  With these numbers, suddenly a stable and comfortable power-boat makes sense, for those looking to make the jump from sailing to power, or those looking for a more efficient power-boat.

For those looking for more power, there was the option to upgrade the engines to 2 x Volvo D4-260’s.   These are found more often in the three cabin owners layout.  Powered by these engines, the yacht can reach speeds of 22-23 knots, cruising at 15-18 knots.  Cruising using the same one engine running trick, at 2000rpm also only burns 3 GPH, which is remarkable.

Being a wide beam catamaran hull, means this yacht has really generous space for both living areas and storage.   There are two layout versions for the 47PC, an owners three cabin layout (where the starboard hull is very open plan, and features a study/lounge area and huge forwards head/shower), and a more conventional 4 cabin/4 head version.  The main salon has plenty of natural light through the large side and forward windows, with galley aft and table seating forwards.  There is a full sized nav station in the starboard forward part of the salon, and the option to fit a second internal helm here.  The yacht is fully air-conditioned and is powered by a 9kw Northern Lights generator, proving quiet cool living on the water.  There are crew quarters on both sides, with the starboard side having its own head, sink and bunk. 

The side decks are extremely wide, for a yacht this size, with a solid deck between the bows giving immense floor space, and high stainless tube guard rail providing safety whilst under way.  The fixed GRP dinghy davits are an ingenious design, where the forward facing bench seat can be folded flat and then lowered into the water to become a boarding platform.  The aft cockpit is very spacious, with comfortable seating for ten around the table to port and additional seating to starboard, for al fresco dining.  Where this yacht really shines is the flybridge, which becomes the living area in all but the most adverse conditions.  Here you have a commanding view of your surroundings, and can helm the yacht from the three person helm seat, whilst also being able to socialize with your guests sitting in the forward area.  The forward area of the flybridge features luxurious wrap around seating to port and an additional bench seat facing forward.  There is also a wet bar to prepare food and drinks, and there is provision to fit stove/BBQ and fridge/ice-maker, so you have all you need to make the flybridge your elevated home on the water. 

The Leopard 47 power cat is unquestionably one of the more exciting power-cats out there, and today offers tremendous value, being priced at a third of the cost of a similar new design, whilst also being an incredible strong and efficient design.  Speaking with delivery crews and owners they all talk highly of the performance, sea-worthiness, build quality, and livability of the yacht. Archipelago 47 yacht tour: On board the all-new ocean-crossing powercat

Reporting from the 2022 Southampton Boat Show, MBY's Alex Smith takes us on a full tour of the Archipelago 47, which was making its global debut...

Designed in collaboration with commercial specialist, Chartwell Marine, this British-built, long-distance aluminium powercat is the first in the firm’s hotly anticipated explorer range and it’s refreshing for a variety of reasons.

For a start, the pronounced elevation of those hull sides creates two very handy benefits. Firstly, it drops the relative profile of the pilothouse, giving the Archipelago 47 a potent military aesthetic that makes the most of the raked roofline and the inverted screen.

And secondly, it creates some superb internal space, both in terms of the storage lockers at the aft ends of those side decks and the headroom for the cabins inside those hulls.

The aluminium construction is also very handy for a boat of this type. In addition to keeping the weight down, improving impact resistance and enabling much simpler repairs, it also makes custom upgrades much easier.

From the big aft deck to the central saloon and the cabins, it can all be tweaked in line with your needs – and so can that big expansive rooftop.

While the show boat uses a huge rack for your toys, plus extra space that looks ideal for solar panels or a tender and crane, a flybridge version of the Archipelago 47 is also under development, which should prove exciting news if alfresco seating is a key priority.

That said, the existing layout feels great. With its wide-open space and pale, naturally textured oak fit-out, the main deck saloon is a thoroughly welcoming part of the boat.

The all-round views are great, thanks to the use of sailboat-style guardrails rather than solid bulwarks. And the galley is also a treat, courtesy of elevated work surfaces that enable you to stand rather than stoop as you prep your food and drink.

Down below, Archipelago has confined the accommodation solely to the hulls, avoiding a deep-chested bridge deck, which might threaten to compromise the boat’s running efficiency and ride softness.

But even on boat number 1, the calibre of those sleeping spaces is very clear to see. There’s an outrageously indulgent owner’s cabin in the port hull and there will be a pair of guest cabins, divided by a central heads to starboard, although they weren’t finished in time for the Southampton Boat Show .

You can also spec it with four cabins if required but in all cases, the vast hull windows and lofty side decks make this intriguing new cat a seriously attractive proposition for ambitious cruisers.

The elevated hull sides do good things both for the styling and the internal space

Capable of running at speeds of up to 30 knots, sleeping up to eight people in four separate cabins and cruising continuously for more than 3,000nm, the new Archipelago 47 is all about expanding your horizons.

While hybrid and electric boat options are likely to prove popular on production models, the first Archipelago 47 will be powered by twin 420hp Iveco diesels on straight shafts running in half tunnels.

As for the Archipelago’s aluminium construction, not only does that help keep the weight down, improve impact resistance and reduce development costs. It also makes custom models much easier to create and impromptu repairs much simpler to execute during remote off-grid adventures.

The Archipelago 47 is an aluminium cat with global ambitions

Company founder, owner and CEO Dr Steven Weatherley is a cyber security specialist with a PhD in astrophysics and an experienced motor boat owner.

After searching in vain for a fast, go-anywhere powercat to replace the family’s Mitchell 31, he decided to commission and build one of his own. He was so pleased with the concept drawings that he decided to turn it into a business.

A second Archipelago 47 is already in build and plans for 38ft and 56ft models are also being developed.

In the short term Weatherley plans to use his new boat for day trips and weekends in the Solent with his wife and four young children but ultimately has ambitions for more adventurous bluewater cruising – hence the range requirements.

“The march of the multihulls seems to be gathering pace with every month but this one really does it for me,” says MBY editor Hugo Andreae. “Small and fast enough for day trips but also robust and efficient enough to cross oceans, it really does seem to offer the best of both worlds.”

S/V Smoke and Roses is a 2005 Leopard 47 catamaran for sale by owner, located in Port Charlotte, Florida. This Leopard 47 is built with thicker hulls for durability and peace of mind. This vessel can take on high seas, goes fast and points well to the wind. It is a 4 cabin version, with queen berths that can sleep 10 and has the reliable shaft drives.

Being the original owners, we have enjoyed over 50,000 cruising miles, including a circumnavigation and many years owning a sailing charter business. Below deck, Smoke and Roses has four spacious, air conditioned private staterooms with en suite heads and showers. The head has been removed from one cabin and replaced with a washer and dryer. ​ The upgraded rig geometry allows reefing from both the helm or the mast. The vast trampoline between the bows is the perfect place to relax and the user friendly deck layout is easy to move around with a non-skid surface.
