She is a custom 65' steel George Sutton-designed pilothouse schooner. Originally built in 1988 by Mark Treworgy, she was recently completely gutted and rebuilt by the well-known and highly respected Howdy Bailey Boatyard in Norfolk, VA. Her current owners spared no expense on the refit, spending over $900,000. Nearly every system was replaced, the hull sounded and reinforced and painted, and  the interior was refinished with the utmost attention to luxurious detail. With a 6.5' draft and 61' mast, "Sir Creeper" can cruise the IWC and Bahamas easily, but she's built to take you around the world. Her traditional rig is complemented by all new sails, and she has every modern convenience one could want. You can own her for half of the cost of the refit! Recent survey available upon request. Make Custom Steel Pilothouse Schooner

1988 Custom Steel Pilothouse Schooner 56 Not all Classic Yachts have"IT". This one-of-a-kind 56' steel George Sutton Designed Custom Pilothouse Schooner does! This boat started with a complete gutting, then moved to sand blasting of the complete interior/exterior. Virtually every system and the entire interior on this boat has been replaced. The description "refit" does not correctly describe the depth of the work that has been completed. This boat should technically be registered as a new build. The Classic Charm of this yacht starts with designer George Sutton and builder Mark Treworgy, however it is the teamwork of her current owners and the Howdy Bailey Boatyard in Norfolk,VA that sets her apart. The love and passion of the owners combined with the old world craftsmanship of the Howdy Bailey Group brings this refit to her unique level of elegance, logical functionality, simplicity, strength and seaworthiness. The boats 6' draft and 61' mast is a powerful combination that makes her a very versatile World Class Cruiser . The owner's plans have changed, creating a truly unique opportunity to own a World Class Yacht at 1/2 of its refit costs. Again this classic yacht should be considered a new build and deserves serious consideration. Please view full specifications and partial list of refit costs.

Accommodations

The pilothouse design ensures that there is a nice, open living space, complete with opening windows and storm shutters. The interior is finished in mahogany, and to stbd. as you enter there is a chart table with a stool and then the helm station, which is quite large. To port is a sea berth. The engine is located under the pilothouse. As you step down into the salon, the large galley is to your right and the refrigerator (also very large) to your left. The galley has a large stainless sink and plenty of counter space.

A folding table sits along the centerline, and settees line either side. Be sure to look at the photos of the leecloths. This boat is made for offshore adventures!

The head with shower is sizeable and sits to stbd, and to port, forward of the salon, is a walkway with a hanging locker and sizeable drawers for storage. The v-berth is large, and a finely crafted insert can be placed in the middle to create a double bed or stowed easily on the cabin sole (see the photos!) to preserve the traditional v-berth.

The interior of this boat is warm and cozy, and speaks clearly to the desire we all have to sit together around the salon table under the glow of a lamp and tell stories after a long voyage.

You will be proud of this boat.

SUTTONS BAY, MI - A triple-masted schooner that’s been turning heads for the last month as it has made its way from the East Coast to the Great Lakes is set to receive a big welcome when it sails into its new home port on Grand Traverse Bay this week.

The Alliance, a 105-foot boat that’s most recently done day cruises in Virginia, is the newest name in the Inland Seas Education Association’s fleet. It is in the Straits of Mackinac area today, plans to swing by Charlevoix, then is expected to finish its 3,000-mile journey late this week.

The public is invited to welcome the Alliance to Suttons Bay on Friday, July 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. Visitors can meet at the Inland Seas campus at 100 Dame St. Once the schooner arrives, people can meet the crew and take a tour of the vessel.

The Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) is known for its popular schoolship program for students as well as its short, themed cruises for the public. The nonprofit’s team has been excited for months about adding the Alliance. They say it will open the door to a lot more programming for students here and in other Great Lakes cities where ISEA’s vessels sail. These include Houghton, Green Bay, Detroit and Cleveland.

Currently, the program uses its flagship 77-foot Inland Seas, along with another boat, the Utopia. Check out its public day sails schedule here.

The Alliance, which can carry about 54 passengers, will allow ISEA to answer a growing pile of requests that until this year had to go unfulfilled. It can also add new programming, building on its current work of deepening people’s understanding and connection to the freshwater system that surrounds us.

“The addition of the schooner Alliance to the ISEA schoolship fleet marks a pivotal moment in the history of our organization and the future stewardship of the Great Lakes,” said ISEA Executive Director Fred Sitkins. “This organizational expansion is a testament to the partnerships that ISEA enjoys throughout the Great Lakes region.”

“Colleges/universities, nonprofits, K-12 schools, foundations, and other organizations partner with ISEA to develop environmental stewards and leaders to care for the Great Lakes. We make a lasting impact in the lives of youth and the health of the Great Lakes and we are thrilled that we can now reach more individuals and communities with the addition of another schoolship.”

Want to experience sailing on Alliance? Public sails are scheduled for late July and early August. In the fall, the Alliance will motor into Detroit to work with students on the Detroit River.

A Flashy Past

The big schooner was launched as a superyacht in 1995 by Treworgy Yachts in Palm Coast, Florida. Initially named Kathryn B., the boat was launched just a year after the same yard put out the Inland Seas. The Kathryn B. ran as part of a windjammer group in Maine, then in 2005 was renamed the Alliance and was run as a daysailing boat in Yorktown, Virginia.

When the vessel came up for sale, the ISEA team saw it as a great addition because it was not only a big, safe boat in good condition, it was already licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard. The long journey to get the Alliance to Grand Traverse Bay began at a Maryland marina in mid-June. From the crew notes that day:

“The Schooner Alliance calmly slipped away from the fuel dock at Georgetown Yacht Haven and headed downriver towards the main body of the Chesapeake Bay. After weeks of yard repairs taking longer than anyone had anticipated, the crew is relieved to be underway at last. Winds are light from the west and Alliance turned more than her fair share of heads as she motored down the Sassafras River. After entering the Chesapeake, Alliance turned north for the Elk River and then onto the C&D Canal bound for the Atlantic Ocean.”

More Than Three Decades on the Water

ISEA’s schoolship program, based in Suttons Bay with an education center and small dormitory there, has been active for 33 years. It has invited children in elementary, middle and high school classes to climb aboard and experience the Great Lakes up close. Kids learn about their water-based ecosystem, environmental issues, conduct experiments, and just learn to love the feel of being on the water.

“People protect what they love, and they love what they understand,” Sitkins said, echoing the words of the famous ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau. “We want kids to understand the lakes ... so they feel connected to them.”

Being aboard a boat as it’s skimming across a Great Lake is an experience that sticks with kids. It also offers them a chance to do the hands-on work of scientists and engineers - perhaps sparking an interest in a future career. “It’s a really good real-world work experience for students,” he said.

More than 10,000 people participated in ISEA programs last year. About half of those were students from more than 150 different schools in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois. Other passengers were adults or family groups who toured one of the boats, went on their roster of ticketed summer cruises for the public, or just stepped on board for a look around as they stopped in a Great Lakes port.

ISEA has deep connections around the lakes. It works with colleges, environmental groups, foundations and other nonprofits. The year-round work follows a seasonal structure: Schoolship programs start in May and stretch into June. Summer is for traveling, sailing into four of the five Great Lakes for educational programs. Past port stops have included Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland and into Lake Superior to drop anchor in Marquette, Houghton and Duluth. Then it is back to the fall schoolship format once classes are back in session.

Branches42' Trawler Treworgy Yachts LRC 1998

This vessel is no longer on the market.

Branches aka Hard Ship was purchased by the current owner (3rd owner), and officer in the USCG, in June 2020. Changing duty circumstances have placed her back on the market. Designed by Charles Wittholz (with hull and deck lines that resemble the Hatteras LRC 42 Mark II 1980-1985) and built by Florida veteran builder Treworgy Yachts this fine little ship was built for the Treworgy owners themselves. After decades of experience in commercial shipbuilding and luxury sailboats, they knew what to include for a safe, comfortable, and economical yacht. Built of steel with an aluminum fly-bridge and no exterior varnish to maintain. She includes: 2 John Deere engines;15KW generator; water maker; Bimini with side curtains new 11/2019; built-in flybridge settee with storage; integrated swim platform; tempered glass windows, 3/8" pilot house windows; new Awlgrip paint; new bottom paint and fenders with holders. Branches has been cruised from the Florida Keys to Maine with in-between trips to Bahamas and has proven herself to be an economical and seaworthy vessel. She rides and handles beautifully, has an amazing layout maximizing space yet providing ease of movement throughout the vessel and lots of storage. Branches provides economical cruising, with a fuel consumption of less than 4 gallons/hour a range of 600 miles with a 15% reserve.  She is Great Loop capable, with maximum height at 18’ and draft of 4'9".

In June of 2020 Branches received and amazingly complementary survey. By Guy R. Nolan, PE, AMS (SAMS #656) SNAME, ABYC, NFPA & NSPE the following was his summary comment.

“This vessel is an excellent example of what happens when an experienced boat builder and cruiser decides to build a vessel for their own use. Not only is the quality of construction excellent but the thought that has gone into the use and future maintenance of the vessel is evident. The vessel is in excellent condition and has obviously been carefully maintained. The hull, decks and deckhouse are in excellent condition. Steel vessels often have running rust stains even when they have been freshly painted. I found no rust whatsoever inside or outside this vessel. The bilges are spotless. The interior is in excellent condition and tastefully decorated. Many custom builds have interiors that can only be described as Spartan. The interior of the M/V HARD SHIP compares will with any production-built vessel and the heads can only be described as stunning. The heads were painted with Awlgrip and it would not be surprising to find some cracks in the paint of a 20+ years old vessel, but I found no flaws at all. The John Deere diesel engines each have almost 3600 hours on them. They started

easily, ran smoothly at all RPM and were quieter than most diesels. The 15-kW generator has over 5500 hours but carried the load of all air conditioners and hardly noticed. The Bimini and ¾ enclosure curtains for the flybridge are in near new condition. The vessel is well outfitted with electronics. The electronics are not new but include everything that could be asked for and it all works well. Overall, this vessel compares well with trawlers half her age.”

The boat's electrical system and the grounding conductor are not actually connected to the shore-side power. The shore ground is connected to a shield that is wound between the primary (shore) and the secondary (boat) transformer winding. The connection of this grounding wire only to the shield of the transformer isolates the boat's AC electrical system from shore. Greatly reduces potential for in-water shock hazard also eliminates the need for polarity alarms and galvanic isolators.
