Horror Takes a Cruise – 10 Great Horror Movies on a Boat

October is defined in Webster’s Dictionary as “31 days of horror.” Don’t bother looking it up; it’s true. Most people take that to mean highlighting one horror movie a day, but here at FSR, we’ve taken that up a spooky notch or nine by celebrating each day with a top ten list. This article about the best horror films that take place on boats is part of our ongoing series 31 Days of Horror Lists .

I’m not a “large body of water” kind of guy. I do not get the appeal of exploring the sea. The ocean seems to exist to kill humans. It’s very easy to get stranded out there, and if you get stranded at sea you die. Naturally, that means I’m not much of a boat guy. For some, I gather that going out on a boat is a relaxing experience. For me, it’s just begging for a date with death. On a small lake or river where I can see land on all sides of me? I could potentially get on board with that. But if all I can see is water? No, thank you. With that being said, boats make for a great setting for horror films. And since we like to rank things here, we decided to rank the best boat-set horror films.

We must stress that this list is for boats. Submarines, underwater facilities, or any sort of floating apparatus that is stationary doesn’t make the cut. Movies like Leviathan and Underwater , while great aquatic horror, do not qualify. We also looked at movies where a majority of the running time is almost exclusively on boats. Jaws  is a great movie with great boat scenes, but it does not meet our criteria for boat horror.

Now that you know the criteria, I must give a shout-out to some honorable mention films. When the idea of doing a boat horror list came to me, three films jumped to mind — Death Ship ,  Ghost Ship , and  Jason Takes Manhattan . Funnily enough, none of those films made the final ten. That’s democracy for you! All three films are very fun in their own right, however. Death Ship  features an unhinged George Kennedy (he still made the list!).  Ghost Ship  has one of the greatest opening scenes in all of horror. And for my thoughts on  Jason Takes Manhattan , I will kindly refer you to our top ten  Friday the 13th  movies.

Enough talk about movies that didn’t make the list. That’s not what you’re here for. Grab your best boater, put on some khaki shorts and your favorite pair of Sperry’s, and prepare to go on a lovely cruise with Rob Hunter , Meg Shields , Brad Gullickson , Jacob Trussell , and yours truly .

10. Sea Fever (2017)

PhD Siobhan ( Hermione Corfield ) purchases a spot on an Irish fishing trawler so she can study deep-sea faunal behavioral patterns. The trawler, the Niamh Cinn Óir, is manned by a 6-person crew, led by Captain Freya ( Connie Nielsen ) and her husband-skipper Gerard ( Dougray Scott ). Desperate for a big haul, Gerard willingly takes the boat into an exclusion zone where they promptly hit an unknown object and become stuck. The crew discovers that what they hit is a parasitic animal that invades the boat’s water supply and begins to infect members of the crew.  Sea Fever  isn’t quite  The Thing  on a boat, but it is of that ilk and features exploding eyeballs. The film takes a clever approach to the parasite subgenre (it is a subgenre!). I especially like the way the crew develops new ideas to defeat the parasite, working with limited means. They build their own UV light – it’s neat! A bit of a downer ending, but a nifty, tightly-paced sci-fi thriller. Highly recommended. (Chris Coffel)

9. The Boat (2018)

When I say this sublime masterclass in single-character horror just barely made the cut here, I mean it. Other titles, ones better known, were hot in its wake, but sometimes quality wins. (Of course, maybe seventeen people in the world have seen the damn thing so I’m not actually sure the “quality wins” argument is a good one.) The beautifully shot film sees an unnamed sailor discover an empty sailboat drifting off the coast of Malta, and when he steps aboard to investigate, the craft seems to take on a life of its own — and it seems determined to kill him. It’s a sleek, eighty-eight-minute thriller as our protagonist fights to survive the various ways in which the boat attempts to off him, and the near complete lack of dialogue adds to the claustrophobic thrills. Add in some wit and a grim sense of humor, and you have one of the great boat-set horrors that you’ve most likely never seen. (Rob Hunter)

8. Anaconda (1997)

My anaconda don’t want none unless it’s got Voight, son!  Luis Llosa ‘s creature feature about a giant snake in the Amazon stars a Fly Girl, a rapper,  Eric Stoltz , and  Jon Voight . Oh, and  Owen Wilson  is there too! The ’90s, what a time to be alive! A documentary film crew searching for a long-lost indigenous Amazonian tribe makes the mistake of picking up snake hunter Paul Serone (Voight). Serone says he can help them find the lost tribe, but really he just needs their boat to find a record-breaking green anaconda that he has been hunting. Did I mention that Serone is a Paraguayan? That’s important because as stated, he is played by Jon Voight. Look, Anaconda  rules. Yes, some of the CGI is shoddy, but there is also a giant animatronic snake and Voight snarling all over the place. Meanwhile, Stoltz is just in bed the entire time. They don’t make them like they used to. (Chris Coffel)

7. Triangle (2009)

A group of friends head out on a yacht for a good time on the high seas. Unfortunately, an unexpected and powerful storm hits, capsizing the boat. One friend is swept away while the others manage to climb on the overturned boat and wait for the storm to pass. They eventually come across an ocean liner and climb aboard. They initially believe it to be abandoned but then they come across a deadly killer, but is it all as it seems?  Triangle  is a film that wants to be very smart and mess with your mind. Truthfully, it doesn’t make a lot of sense and any attempt to dig into the story will leave you with something that doesn’t quite add up. With that being said, it’s a highly engrossing movie that will pull you in. And it features a genuinely creepy bag-headed killer and a terrific lead performance from  Melissa George . Ignore the nonsensical plot and enjoy the ride. (Chris Coffel)

6. Harpoon (2019)

One of the most slept-on horror comedies in recent memory, Rob Grant ’s psychological pleasure craft thriller is a good reminder to buy a satellite phone before you get on your rich friend’s yacht. Those fucker’s can’t be trusted. While this list is well-populated with ghost ships, Lovecraftian beasties, and Bermuda Triangles, it is a truth universally acknowledged that going out to sea with messy, unhinged twentysomethings is the final circle of hell. Also, the boat in this movie is called the “Naughty Buoy,” which earned it some serious brownie points. With a comedic sensibility darker than the Atlantic sea bed, this “things go from bad-to-worse” nightmare follows three young maniacs who get stranded at sea  after  trying to kill each other. Putting the “ can-con ” in cannibalism,  Harpoon  is funny, frightening, and further proof that anyone willing to make amends with a spontaneous cruise is not to be trusted. (Meg Shields)

5. Uninvited (1988)

A genetically altered cat makes his way onto a shady businessman’s luxury yacht and promptly goes on a killing spree. It should be pointed out that this altered cat, escapes from a research facility with the help of another cat, sort of. If that plot sounds wild to you, then this must be your first  Greydon Clark  movie, because I assure you that this is a standard Greydon Clark movie. In most killer cat movies, the killer cat is the star, but in the case of  Uninvited , the cat is outshined by a manic  George Kennedy , who would not be denied a spot on this list. It’s bonkers, it’s wild, and it’s a top-three killer ca t movie. Best watched with the help of catnip. (Chris Coffel)

4. Project Wolf Hunting (2022)

Project Wolf Hunting  is best described as  The Raid  on a boat meets  Frankenstein  with a dash of  Con Air . A cargo ship is transporting a group of deadly criminals from Manila to Busan. To the surprise of everyone, things go terribly wrong when the criminals form an escape plan. To make matters worse, the ship is also carrying Alpha ( Choi Gwi-hwa ), a superhuman created from inhumane experiments dating back to World War II. Alpha breaks free and goes on a brutal killing spree, ripping apart criminals, cops, and everyone in between. The highlight of the film is  Seo In-guk , who plays a tattooed murderer who is built up to be a real badass. He gets into a showdown with Alpha that proves that maybe he isn’t. The title doesn’t make a lot of sense, which the movie pokes fun at, but other than that this is a pretty flawless film. Brutal, bone-crushing action and a superhuman creature all on one boat. (Chris Coffel)

3. Deep Rising (1998)

I don’t remember many movies my parents and I rented together on Pay-Per-View when I was in middle school. But not every movie is  Deep Rising . I was too young to remember the ad campaigns for the film, so when it was made available to rent, I came to it as a blank slate. But the moment those tentacled monsters reared their ugly suckers in the hull of an abandoned cruise ship, I knew I was in love. A blockbuster mashup of Lovecraftian horror with the aesthetics of 80’s-era sci-fi action — all set on an impeccably creepy luxury liner —  Deep Rising  honestly stood no chance of (sorry) rising to the top of the box office in the late 90s when horror was more interested in self-reference than pure popcorn fun. But in the years since its theatrical debut, audiences have finally come around to the film, moving  Deep Rising  to its rightful place on the mantle of exquisite aqua-horror movies. (Jacob Trussell)

2. Dead Calm (1989)

If you get on a boat and you see  Billy Zane , you immediately get off the boat because the odds are he will be an asshole and you will die. Sam Neill  and  Nicole Kidman  learn that the hard way in  Phillip Noyce ‘s excellent thriller,  Dead Calm . John (Neill) and Rae Ingram (Kidman) attempt to deal with the unspeakable tragedy of losing their son by spending time at sea on their yacht. The hope is that the isolation and time alone will allow them to properly grieve. While floating out in the Pacific, they encounter a man (Zane) on a liferaft who asks for their help. The man says he was on a ship with friends, but they all died from food poisoning, leaving him stranded. The Ingrams are rightfully suspicious. Dead Calm  plays like a stage play at sea. Three terrific actors working well off each other and delivering great performances. It’s an edge-of-your-seat thriller that zooms from the opening beat to the explosive finale. (Chris Coffel)

1. Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)

The  Rita  isn’t much to look at. She’s a rusty, rotting steamer, but she’ll get her crew down the Amazon and protect them far better than the Orca did her passengers. Captain Lucas is nearly as grizzled as Quint too, and he knows his environment equally. The  Rita  deposits its expedition into the fabled Black Lagoon, and it’s here where the scientists will confront the Creature.

Anyone who has ever carried the fantasy that they could one day venture into the heart of the jungle and do battle with some ancient beast imagines the  Rita . She’s the ultimate jungle cruise vessel, a storybook creation, one step removed from what Wes Anderson would fabricate. It’s perfectly Hollywood, a jewel of production design, set dressing, carpentry, and engineering. River worthy. Dream worthy. (Brad Gullickson)

The 13 Best (and Worst) ‘Dracula on a Boat’-Type Horror Movies, Ranked

Vampires and werewolves and aliens — on vehicles — oh my!

The Last Voyage of the Demeter

The new horror film “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” was dubbed “Dracula on a Boat” by social media users, and the twist on the chapter from Bram Stoker’s iconic horror novel definitely did deliver on the premise of the age-old vampire feasting on the crew of an unlucky ship.

Introducing a monster of any kind — alien, werewolf, zombies — to a vehicle that can’t stop and can’t let anyone off is a tried-and-true horror formula. Here are some of the movies where the combo of “creature” + “claustrophobic form of transportation” worked and some where it ran aground.

Snakes on a Plane, Samuel L. Jackson

13. Snakes on a Plane

The ultimate in high-concept movies had a mad-as-hell Samuel L. Jackson battling, that’s right, snakes on a plane. The venomous reptiles are unleashed on a Hawaiian flight to keep a witness from testifying at a murder trial. And to have Jackson deliver this immortal line : “I have had it with these motherf—king snakes on this motherf—king plane!” Naturally, every obvious piece of anatomy gets bitten.

Stream “Snakes on a Plane” on Max.

Anaconda

12. Anaconda

Giant snake on a boat! In this delightfully cheesy ’90s offering, oddly accented snake hunter Jon Voight leads a crew of documentarians — including Ice Cube, Jennifer Lopez and Eric Stoltz — down the waters of the Amazon as they seek out a legendarily outsized anaconda. Of course, there’s no need to look for it as it finds them. Not all of the killer snake action is limited to their ship, but that line from “Apocalypse Now,” “Never get out of the boat,” is still good advice.

Stream “Anaconda” on Starz and DirecTV.

Dracula 2000

11. Dracula 2000

Dracula on a plane! This Dimension horror film updated the “Dracula on a boat” premise from Stoker’s book to a private plane where fortune hunters have the extremely bad luck to be traveling with the Count’s sealed coffin. One character unwisely opens the metal casket looking for treasure but finds the slumbering vamp, who just needs a snack or two to revive himself. In a nod to the original novel, where the dead captain of the Demeter is found lashed to the wheel, the body of the plane’s pilot is mysteriously strapped to his seat with metal bonds.

Stream “Dracula 2000” on Max.

Blood Red Sky

10. Blood Red Sky

Vampire on a plane! A woman (Peri Baumeister) who is secretly one of the undead must battle ruthless hijackers, while protecting her non-vamp son, in this underrated German Netflix movie.

Stream “Blood Red Sky” on Netflix.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter

9. The Last Voyage of the Demeter

Dracula on a boat! While this is the first movie based on Bram Stoker’s immortal novel to exclusively focus on the voyage of the doomed ship that brings the vamp to England, most Dracula adaptations have included at least a passing reference to the sequence. The movie from André Øvredal, the director of “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” draws from the captain’s log portion of the book in which an unseen monster picks off the crew one by one and turns it into a full-blown creature feature.

Watch it exclusively in theaters.

7. Deep Rising

6. Twilight Zone: The Movie

Gremlin on a plane! John Lithgow stars as a nervous flyer who’s the only one to see a mysterious creature ripping up the wing of the aircraft outside his window. Of course, no one believes him and he must resort to extreme measures to save the flight. It’s a remake of one of the most famous “Twilight Zone” episodes, 1963’s “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet,” which starred a pre-“Star Trek” William Shatner as the increasingly unhinged passenger.

Mathilda May in "Lifeforce"

5. Lifeforce

Vampires on a spaceship! Steve Railsback stars as the only crew member to survive after his craft takes three human-looking aliens in glass coffins on board. (When will humans ever learn not to pick up souvenirs?) Back on Earth, he’s the only one who can stop the beautiful space vamp (Mathilda May) thanks to a Vulcan-like mind meld. Tobe Hooper of “Poltergeist” directs a terrific cast that includes Patrick Stewart.

4. World War Z

Zombies on a plane! Towards the end of the film, Brad Pitt’s character narrowly escapes the fall of Jerusalem to the undead horde by grabbing a plane to safety. Except… as a small chihuahua alerts us, the infected are also on board. The speed with which people turn into zombies, and the fact that there’s absolutely nowhere to go on a plane, make this one of the movie’s best sequences.

Horror Express

3. Horror Express

Alien on a train! Horror icons Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing star in this tale that’s based on “Who Goes There?,” the same novel that inspired John Carpenter’s classic “The Thing.” In this version, Lee’s scientist brings a frozen specimen on board that he hopes will be the “missing link” in human evolution. It’s actually a space parasite that can leap from body to body. Add in Telly Savalas as a Cossack captain and this is a ride you don’t want to miss.

alien-1979-sigourney-weaver

Alien on a spaceship! Ridley Scott’s slow-building sci-fi horror film spawned a whole franchise and a series of not-great cinematic copies, but you can’t beat the original for deep space dread. There are so many places an alien can hide in the intricate architecture of the Nostromo and one of the greatest set pieces is when the captain (Tom Skerritt) tries to corner the creature in a narrow tunnel as his horrified crew watches the two dots get closer and closer, knowing there’s nothing they can do to save him. It’s up to quick-thinking Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) to save the day, as she does again in James Cameron’s arguably even better “Aliens.”

10 scariest horror movies set at sea.

The sea is a truly terrifying location, filled with monstrous and deadly creatures that are waiting to prey on the hapless humans who stray too far.

  • The sea has long been a source of fear and fascination, with myths and legends about monstrous sea creatures and drownings.
  • Many horror movies use the sea as a setting to create a sense of isolation and an unstoppable force against the characters.
  • Films like Jaws , Deep Blue Sea , and Underwater have made audiences afraid to go in the water with their terrifying and realistic portrayals of the dangers lurking beneath the ocean's surface.

There are a number of terrifying horror movies that are set at sea, whether they're focused on the water's surface or the depths below. The sea has been rightly considered petrifying for millennia, prompting legends and myths about monstrous sea creatures and fatal drownings. Some horror movies have exploited this, and depict an unsettling interpretation of the world's almighty oceans.

The sea has proven itself an ideal location for horror since the ancient myths about sirens and the leviathan and continued with legends of the Kraken emerging in the Middle Ages. Appropriately then, several horror movies have opted to base their terrors on, near, or even under the ocean. From stories rooted in folklore to others based on true events, the sea is evidently a truly frightening location for films.

20 Best Horror Movies Set In The Woods

10 jaws (1975), set off the coast of new england, in the atlantic ocean.

Jaws is one of the most iconic movies ever, and a lot of it was filmed on the ocean. This lent the movie its sense of realism, even if it did create several issues during filming, including Jaws 's infamous malfunctioning shark . Jaws is often referred to as the movie that made audiences afraid to go in the water , and it is easy to see why. Despite being produced in 1975, several incredibly startling scenes have endured as classic moments in cinema. Jaws is undoubtedly the most famous horror movie set at sea, and it's one of the most frightening.

9 Dead Calm (1989)

Set off the coast of australia, in the pacific ocean.

Dead Calm is an Australian thriller starring Sam Neill, Nicole Kidman, and Billy Zane. Each delivers a haunting performance that truly demonstrates their acting prowess. Neill and Kidman play a married couple who, after the tragic death of their son, spend some time on their yacht at sea. They soon come across a suspicious stranger who has seemingly abandoned a sinking ship. Like many horror movies set at sea, here the open water is used as a metaphor for the characters' isolation in the face of an unstoppable force . Dead Calm is an enthralling and terrifying exploration of grief that is very elegantly delivered.

8 Open Water (2003)

Set near the bahamas, in the atlantic ocean.

Open Water loosely adapts the terrifying true story of two scuba divers who are stranded in the ocean and must struggle to survive in the shark-infested waters. It is an incredibly harrowing narrative with a particularly chilling climax. Open Water adopts the found footage trope deftly, utilizing a handheld camera style to foster a visceral sense of reality, which greatly bolsters the frantic terror depicted. Considering the minuscule budget, Open Water is a taut movie , managing to create an unbearable tone despite its obvious limitations.

7 Triangle (2009)

Set in the bermuda triangle, in the atlantic ocean.

Triangle is a psychological horror movie about a single mother who goes on a boating trip with her friends. When a storm forces them to abandon their ship, the group boards an abandoned ocean liner — on which they are slowly stalked and murdered by an unknown assailant. Triangle delivers several genuine moments of terror in a novel fashion, drawing from several legends that have surrounded the infamous Bermuda Triangle for centuries. A high level of creativity is abundantly clear throughout the movie, and the sea setting is even emphasized by Triangle 's delightful tagline: " F ear comes in waves. "

6 Below (2002)

Set at the bottom of the atlantic ocean.

Co-written by Darren Aronofsky, Below is a claustrophobic movie that fully exploits its underwater setting. The movie depicts a U.S. Navy submarine patrolling the Atlantic Ocean in 1943 as a series of disturbing instances sow mistrust and rumors among the crew. Below features several delightful frights and a highly original concept plus a selection of familiar faces, including Matt Davis and Bruce Greenwood, who give sterling performances in the face of very clear budget restrictions. The mirror scene is an especially unsettling example of how Below created a terrifying tone with relatively inexpensive techniques. Below nurtures this excruciating tension throughout , persisting until the dramatic conclusion.

5 The Abyss (1989)

Set near the cayman trough, in the caribbean sea.

James Cameron's scary science-fiction masterpiece The Abyss was notoriously difficult to make but produced a truly terrifying movie. Its plot concerns a civilian diving team who are searching for a lost nuclear submarine. During their mission, they encounter an aquatic alien race. The Abyss features mightily impressive cinematography and sound design. It also features Cameron's trademark groundbreaking special effects , which still hold up despite being produced in 1989. In fact, The Abyss won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 1990.

4 The Lighthouse (2019)

The lighthouse.

Set on a remote island in 1890, The Lighthouse depicts the slow descent into madness as two lighthouse keepers become marooned. The Lighthouse is perhaps the only folk horror movie set at sea. Indeed, The Lighthouse weaves myths from the sea into its narrative, including folklore concerning gulls and mermaids, along with a selection of sturdy sea shanties. Though both characters venture into the sea at points, they primarily dwell on the craggy island, retreating from the indiscriminate power of the ocean as it batters them and the eponymous lighthouse. It remains a terrifying movie, right through to The Lighthouse 's enigmatic ending .

3 Deep Blue Sea (1999)

Set in an undisclosed location under the sea, deep blue sea.

Deep Blue Sea receives an unfair degree of criticism for its slightly ridiculous plot and very dated special effects, but it's the next best shark movie after Jaws . Deep Blue Sea depicts an underwater lab and its attempts to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease by experimenting on sharks. When the sharks escape, they begin to display even greater intelligence and violence than previously presumed. With a string of great jump scares and highly creative sequences, Deep Blue Sea should be far better regarded in the realm of horror movies set at sea.

2 Underwater (2020)

Set in the mariana trench, in the pacific ocean.

Kristen Stewart stars in this science fiction horror movie as a mechanical engineer working on a drilling facility who encounters a series of hostile creatures following a destructive seaquake. Underwater is a dazzlingly beautiful movie filled with impressive action sequences and terrifyingly claustrophobic moments. The creatures were based on monsters from H. P. Lovecraft's work , with the final monster in Underwater being Cthulhu . Underwater is incredibly atmospheric with a slow tension building throughout before transforming entirely into a creature feature.

Movies That Make You Scared to Go in the Water

The 10 Most Thrilling Maritime Movies, Ranked

Check out the best, "You're gonna need a bigger boat" maritime thrillers.

In June 1975, the summer blockbuster was born when three men set sail to kill a monstrous 30-foot great white shark before realizing they were "gonna need a bigger boat". Jaws was one of the first thrillers to take place on a boat or in the water, and it gave movies a relatively unexplored new setting for a dramatic film. Since then dozens of maritime movies have had us on the edge of our seats.

Whether it's the isolation of such vast waters or the uncertainty of what lies beneath us, there is something inherently exhilarating about watching a story unfold on a wide open body of water. It can be an ocean, a sea, a lake, or a small pond, just give us some forbidding and mysterious depths, and we seem to fall for them hook, line, and sinker. Here are the ten best movies that take place almost exclusively in or on water.

10 'Open Water' (2003)

This 2003 cinéma vérité offering was made extra spooky because it really had a documentary feel to it, and it felt like we were actually witnessing two people on the verge of losing their lives. After being accidentally left behind on a scuba diving expedition during a vacation tour at The Great Barrier Reef, Blanchard Ryan ( Susan Watkins ) and Daniel Travis ( Daniel Kinter ) are left to their own devices to survive.

The boat crew isn't even aware that they have been left behind for days and the two are left treading water as the sharks start to circle their next meal. Open Water is a truly splendid low-budget movie that sucks you into a slow burn and the agony of watching the life drain from the two marooned swimmers.

9 'The Poseidon Adventure' (1972)

A veritable who's who of early 1970s A-listers lined up to take a luxury cruise on the doomed ship Poseidon. Gene Hackman , Leslie Nielsen , Shelly Winters , Ernest Borgnine , and Red Button looked death in the face when the enormous ship capsizes during a severe storm on New Year's Eve.

Led by Hackman at his alpha best, a group of six survivors has to make their way up to the bottom of the ship's hull. It's a surreal setting as everything is literally turned upside down, and time is running short with the Poseidon slowly being swallowed up by the Atlantic Ocean on a trip from New York to Athens, Greece. A wonderful 1970s disaster film entry into the genre that was so popular throughout the decade

8 'Dead Calm' (1989)

Most of the movie-going audience was introduced to a young Nicole Kidman in this 1989 harrowing tale about a husband and wife out for a short cruise run into a stranded ship out on the open sea. Dead Calm absolutely capitalizes on the isolation aspect of being alone and helpless when John ( Sam Neill ) takes to the marooned boat only to find a lone survivor Hughie ( Billy Zane ) desperate for help.

They make the wrong decision when they allow him to come aboard their ship as Hughie turns out to be an unhinged psychopathic killer. Kidman made a name for herself in this late 80s thriller, and it remains one of the most thrilling maritime movies.

7 'Aquaman' (2018)

It took a while, but we finally got our Aquaman movie in 2018 and even though it isn't the best DC superhero movie entry ever, Jason Momoa is a solid titular man-fish who can swim like Michael Phelps and also communicate with his scaly friends under the sea.

When the city of Atlantis is threatened by a power-hungry King Orm "Call me the Ocean Master!" Marius ( Patrick Wilson ), Aquaman makes it his mission to save the storied city. Amber Heard rides shotgun as Mera in what may be one of the last times we see her in a big-budget feature film with all the off-the-set drama over the past few years.

6 'The Hunt For Red October' (1990)

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan was portrayed for the first time on the big screen by Alec Baldwin in 1990 in this adaptation of the author's bestselling book The Hunt for Red October published in 1984. Russian submarine captain Marko Ramius ( Sean Connery ) ventures into dangerous waters when he takes the Red October into unauthorized territory.

Only the CIA analyst turned special operations agent Jack Ryan seems to know that he isn't engaging in war maneuvers, but intends to defect from mother Russia. It's arguably the finest submarine set film ever made with consideration given to the German thriller Das Boot and an underrated Crimson Tide starring Denzel Washington . B ut no one does the Cold War between the United States and Russia better than Clancy , and director John McTiernan delivered a great film.

5 'The Deep' (1977)

In 1977, a mere two years after a certain movie that may appear later on this list redefined how we view what lurks below the surface of the water, director Peter Yates led a starry cast including Nick Nolte , Jacqueline Bissett , and Robert Shaw in the intense and suspenseful thriller The Deep . Robert Shaw really made his hay in Hollywood as the salty old sea dog, didn't he?

He appears again later in this list. In this film, he plays a gruff treasure hunter named Romer Treece who comes to the aid of two divers who unwittingly come across a valuable sunken payload. But when they go sticking their noses out a little too far, trouble ensues. Peter Benchley of Jaws fame wrote the screenplay for this maritime thriller.

4 'Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World' (2003)

Russell Crowe continued his dominance as the biggest, most bankable action star of the early 2000s when he starred as Captain Jack Aubrey in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World . He has only been better in Gladiator three years earlier. Master and Commander is much more than a war film on water.

RELATED: The Opening Kill of Each ‘Jaws’ Shows How the Rest of the Movie Will Go

The relationship between Aubrey and the ship's doctor and resident scientist Stephen Maturin ( Paul Bettany ) steers the plot in between the tactical sailing maneuvers and canon fire of the speedy HMS Surprise . The battle scenes are splendid and well shot, but it's the relationships that develop between the men stuck aboard the tight environs of a ship for months that really drive the film.

3 'Life of Pi' (2012)

There is so much brilliance to unpack when writing about Life of Pi . It has a little bit of everything from a deadly shipwreck to an amazing story of survival to the incredible evolution of a relationship between a boy and his unlikely group of passengers. M. Night Shyamalan and Alfonso Cuaron were both attached to the film to direct before it ultimately fell to Ang Lee who deftly takes to a watery setting (and won the Academy Award for Best Director) to deliver the harrowing tale of Pi Patel ( Suraj Sarma ) who is the only survivor of a sunken ship full of exotic animals.

Several of them make their way onto his small lifeboat, including a zebra, an orangutan, a spotted hyena, and a deadly Bengal tiger that Pi names "Richard Parker". It's an incredibly original and perfectly paced drama that fully develops the storyline of a unique bond between a boy and an exotic killer.

2 'Titanic' (1997)

Jack and Rose, Rose and Jack - no matter how you say it, they are two halves of a whole in the 1997 blockbuster Titanic directed by James Cameron and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet ( Billy Zane makes the list for a second time in a great supporting role). There are love stories, and then there are tales of the heart that reach deep inside and take control of your emotions.

The fairy tale romance between stowaway Jack Dawson, and the up-and-coming debutante Rose DeWitt Bukater completely redefined the romance genre and also did a masterful job of blending in the based on real-life tragedy surrounding one of the most infamous shipwrecks of all time . Jack and Rose are the Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara of modern film.

1 'Jaws' (1975)

Do you think when Peter Benchley penned a novel called Jaws , he knew it would go on to become one of the biggest sea-shifting (see what we did there?) cinematic events in the history of film? Probably not. But Steven Spielberg's adaptation of the hunt or a great white off the coast of Cape Cod that is terrorizing the residents of Amity revolutionized what we now refer to as the "summer blockbuster".

Roy Scheider , Robert Shaw , and Richard Dreyfuss had no idea just how freaking big this killer predator they were stalking was, and that it was actually the shark that was stalking them. This is the reason we go to the movies and close to 50 years later, Jaws is still a terrific watch.

Table of contents

All is Lost (2013)

For lone sailors, All is Lost is probably the best movie to give you a glimpse of what might go wrong for you if you decide to sail the big blue ocean alone. With a near-mute performance as an old man who loves sailing alone, Robert Redford puts in an almost quasi-silent performance by portraying the ordeal of what a lone sailor can undergo when the sea turns on you.

Directed by JC Chandor, there's only one person on the screen throughout the film. He's all alone in the vast sea with his damaged boat. He has to become tough, resourceful, and calm even when things turn against him. Single-character movies are a rarity even today but this is a great survival film that perfectly depicts what could happen even to the hardest lone sailors out there.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)

Directed by the talented Peter Weir, this critically-acclaimed movie was nominated for 10 Oscars and won for best cinematography and sound editing. Depicting the return of the high-seas adventure, this movie is skillfully and meticulously adapted from the historical novel by Patrick O'Brian set during the Napoleonic Wars and starring Russell Crowe.

Crowe plays an arrogant captain who pushes his ship crew to the limits while trying to capture a French warship. This movie offers action-packed battle scenes that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This movie gives you an insight of what sailors undergo in their struggles to make it through the high-seas alive.

Captain Ron (1992)

With little sailing experience but with an inherited yacht moored on an offshore island Martin Short hires charismatic Captain Ron to take them back to Florida. The voyage isn't as easy as they expected as they have to face pirates, breakdowns, and other obstacles. They all get more than what they bargained for.

Portrayed by Kurt Russell, Captain Ron depicts the misadventures of a nominal sailing character that is hired by an upper-middle-class father to guide a yacht through the Caribbean. From the marine accidents, pirates, guerilla carnivals to malfunctioning equipment, and Russell's croaked absurdities, this movie is just full of double humor and worthy performance.

Wind (1992)

As one of the biggest races in competitive sailing, America's Cup is often associated with rich people competing in weird-looking boats. But this movie changes this as it takes viewers through the eyes of tanned and rugged Will Parker as played by Matthew Modine. He's hired by a self-made millionaire (Cliff Robertson) to lead his crew in the competition.

Together with his girlfriend Kate who is an equally skilled sailor, Parker intends to win America's Cup but Kate is thrown off the crew leaving Parker angry. When the crew loses America's Cup to the Australians, Parker decides to form his own syndicate to win back the cup.

White Squall (1996)

This movie follows a young man's adventure movie that follows a group of high school students who boards the brigantine ship called Albatross for their senior year at sea. They sail to the tip of South America and back. They get to accept responsibility, learn how to be sailors, and grow up.

The skipper of the ship, Christopher Sheldon together with the 13 teenage boys set sail for an eight-month voyage. The boys soon discover Sheldon's psyche gradations, rattling tension, and freak storms that sink the ship. As a sailor, you'll be disturbed by the fact that four students and two crew members drown, leaving skipper Sheldon facing a fierce tribunal, tortured conscience, and grieving parents and students.

Mutiny on the Bounty (1962)

As one of the greatest epic movies of the 1960s, English Captain Bligh is on a sea voyage to transport breadfruit from England to Jamaica. He is so abusive that he gets on the nerves of his crew members, especially 1st Lieutenant, Fletcher Christian.

Tension eases when they reach Jamaica and the crew indulges in the island's lifestyle but the captain claps some members of his crew in irons as they try to desert. Further abuses lead Fletcher to inspire a mutiny against the Captain. Fletcher and his men set the Captain and his loyal members afloat in a rowboat. This movie offers a realistic depiction of a larger-than-life character that most sailors are known for.

Dead Calm (1989)

Starring Billy Zane, Nicole Kidman, Sam Neil, and a gorgeous 60 ft. ketch, Dead Calm revolves around a mass-murderer who kidnaps and seduces a young beautiful woman after leaving a husband to die on a vessel whose crew he has just murdered.

This movie was filmed in the Whitsundays Islands of Australia, which is one of the best sailing destinations in the world. Bringing forth an epic combination of deadly sailing conditions , complete isolation from the rest of the world, and a skillful villain aboard the vessel, this movie is thrilling and will leave you looking behind your back whenever you're out there on the sea.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)

This adventure-comedy follows the high journeys of Steve Zissou, a character adaptation of French oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau. It follows his ocean expedition when tracking the ‘jaguar shark' that apparently ate his partner, Esteban.

Esteban had been working with Zissou on a documentary about mysterious circumstances by a shark. This is a sharp film with lots of fun and adventure on the sea.

Kon-Tiki (2012)

Legendary Norwegian explorer and ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl believes that the South Sea Islands were originally colonized by South Americans. Thor, who fears water and doesn't know how to swim, partakes on a voyage in 1947 to prove his belief. Together with five crew members, set sail from Peru on a balsa-wood ancient raft.

Even though their only modern equipment is a radio, they have to navigate through the ocean while relying on stars and ocean currents and they achieve the impossible after exhausting three months at the sea. This is a very spirited adventure that depicts what's possible when we believe in our dreams.

Maidentrip (2013)

A 14-year-old sailor by the name Laura Dekker sets sail on a two-year voyage in pursuit of her dream to become the world's youngest sailor. Laura sets out from Holland and sails throughout the world. Apart from the occasional foul language that Laura uses now and then on the documentary, this is an excellent film that shows what one can achieve when he/she lives her dream and works hard towards achieving it.

The documentary, however, doesn't suggest that Laura is alarmingly young to sail across the unforgiving Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Instead, she's depicted as an independent outsider who is looking for paradise in a never-ending sea.

Adrift (2018)

In most cases, sailors seem to never anticipate that they may sail directly into a catastrophic hurricane and this is exactly what Richard Sharp and Tami Oldham do when they sail directly in one of the worst hurricanes ever recorded in history.

Tami awakes in the aftermath of the hurricane to find their boat in ruins and Richard is badly injured. And because they do not have any hope that they would ever get help or get rescued, Tami is left with two options: sit there and perish or find strength and determination to save herself as well as the only man she's ever loved.

Turning Tide (En Solitaire) (2013)

In this daring tale, this movie portrays how a fearless sailor known as Yann Kermadec finds a lot of obstacles in his biggest race as a two-hander named Turning Tide falls flat. In a nail-biting tension, the story begins when Kermadec replaces the main skipper in the Vendee Globe on short notice.

After some smooth sailing, things go eerily wrong for the sailor as his ship is damaged and he's forced to anchor off the Canary Islands to repair it. When he gets back on his journey, he soon discovers that a Mauritanian teenage boy has sneaked inside the boat and he has no option but to sail with him at least until they cross the Atlantic Ocean.

The Old Man and the Sea (1958)

An old Cuban angler known as Spencer Tracy is so unlucky that he hasn't caught any fish in 84 days. And despite the commitment of a young boy to bring him food, the angler fears that he's forever lucky but catches a small fish on his 85th day, so he decides to keep fishing.

When one of his many fishing lines hooks a large marlin, he decides not to go back to the shore until he reels it in. For almost two days and nights, he has no choice but to sit there and do everything he can to redeem himself from what seems like a perpetual failure.

Morning Light (2008)

By entering the TRANSPAC, which is one of the world's best open-ocean competitions, 15 young men and women prepare for a sailing adventure of their lives. With world-class teachers, these sailors begin intense training in Hawaii but only reach a climax in an elimination process that comes in the form of who-stays-and-who-goes process.

This documentary follows these sailors for six months as they embark on a 2,300-mile sailing ordeal, which starts in Los Angeles and ends in Honolulu.

The Perfect Storm (2000)

Created by Wolfgang Petersen, The Perfect Storm is a blockbuster that's big on visuals and depicts an action-packed escapade on the water as Captain Billy Tyne and his crew set on a fishing expedition aboard a ship known as Andrea Gail.

They're soon caught up in a catastrophic destructive storm when they decide to risk the storm and have to deal with a very powerful hurricane. At the height of their fishing expedition, their ice machine breaks down and the only way to ensure that their catch doesn't go stale is by hurrying back to the shore to sell their catch. This is exactly why they decide to risk their lives and it doesn't turn out as they expected.

Captain Phillips (2013)

When Captain Richard Phillips takes command of an unarmed container ship known as MV Maersk Alabama from the port of Salalah in Oman, they anticipate that they'll be attacked by Somali Pirates on their way to Mombasa, Kenya.

They attack the ship and Captain Phillips has to use his wits and diplomacy to negotiate with the pirates and save his crew.

Maiden (2018)

As the saying goes; what a man can do a woman can do even better. This is exactly what's depicted by this sailing movie that follows the life of Tracy Edwards as she leads the first all-female crew when competing in the Whitbread Round the World Race.

Covering 33,000 miles and lasting for nine months, this is a truly grueling race that depicts the corrosive sexism that still exists in the sailing world as well as the ocean terrors that sailors have to deal with during voyages or competitions.

Chasing Bubbles (2016)

This is a captivating documentary that follows the journey of Alex Rust who is a free spirit who gives the normal life to sail around the world. Alex is brought up as a farm boy but becomes a stock trader in Indiana. At the age of 25, he decides to abandon his life in Chicago, buys a modest sailboat known as Bubbles and embarks on a very unique free-spirited voyage. It takes him three years to sail around the world and to quench his insatiable curiosity while meeting great people and fulfilling his lifelong dream of becoming a free soul.

This is a breathtaking travelogue that depicts the sailing life of a truly absorbing character.

180° South (2010)

Directed by Chris Malloy, this is a sailing documentary that covers the journey of Jeff Johnson as he travels from Ventura, California to Patagonia in Chile. He does this to retrace the same trip covered by Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins in 1968.

While the two initial explorers made the journey on the land, Johnson travels by sea using a small boat.

Deep Water (2006)

This movie follows the true-life story of Donald Crowhurst, an inexperienced British sailor who enters the Golden Globe, which is the first nonstop boat race in the world. Donald puts up his home as collateral to gain financial backing to compete in the race but soon finds himself on the wrong end of things as he enters the race under-prepared.

The anticipation is building so much, we could just scream

When you’re done scrolling, there’s more: Check out our scariest horror movies of all time , the best classic horror movies , and the funniest horror movies ever .

a person in a pool

Blumhouse expands its vast library with a supernatural horror film that turns the classic swimming-pool game Marco Polo into a death wish. The narrative belongs to the Waller family, a brood of four settling into their new home, when they begin to sense that their shimmering backyard pool harbors some sort of sinister force. Kerry Condon ( The Banshees of Inisherin ) and Wyatt Russell ( Lodge 49 ) star, while Bryce McGuire (writer on 2023’s Baghead ) directs.

Destroy All Neighbors

a man with glasses looking at the camera

Prog rock, a genre of music that embraces the esoteric, is admittedly not for everyone. But Josh Forbes’s homage to the genre’s glory days is for every horror buff. A mash-up of chuckles, chills, and, gore, Destroy All Neighbors sees a creatively stagnant musician named Will go on a killing spree. And aside from the bonkers tunes, there’s much to cheer for: old-school special effects, tons of splatter, and even a fun cameo from Kumail Nanjiani.

Somewhere Quiet

a man and woman

A Boston woman named Meg is kidnapped from a parking garage in Beacon Hill, but Olivia West Lloyd’s Somewhere Quiet isn’t interested in the salacious details of the six months Meg spent in captivity. Rather, this slow-burner is keen on the aftermath: the terrifying ways trauma manifests in Meg’s mind; the gaslighting she experiences from those around her, including her husband; and the primal fear that becomes a forever dark passenger for survivors of harrowing events.

Lisa Frankenstein

a woman wearing a hat

Cole Sprouse and Kathryn Newton star in this ’80s-set horror comedy written by Diablo Cody and directed by music-video alum Zelda Williams. Newton plays a high schooler with a crush on a dead guy (Sprouse) who comes back to life after a fit of mad science. Together, they unleash pandemonium. Think of it like Heathers meets Valley Girl with a Mary Shelley twist. Also featuring a rad soundtrack and saturated neons that bring to mind Lisa Frank Incorporated, the film is a gift for Valentine’s Day.

In theaters February 9 .

Out of Darkness

a group of men in camouflage

It’s 43,000 BCE—read: nothin’ but animal hide as clothing—and a group of early nomads are on the move. Confronted with dangers, both natural and mystical, they find themselves hunted by a demon and forced to do whatever it takes to stay alive. So you can imagine things get savage in this Stone Age survival tale. But where Andrew Cumming’s debut really shines is in its atmospheric mood and the bone-chilling attention to detail in every crunch, kill, and scream. Surround sound, for sure!

a woman holding a remote control

Quite possibly the freakiest thing you will lay eyes on this year, Stopmotion is nothing like the idiosyncratic wonder-worlds that spring from the mind of Wes Anderson. Rather, this psychological assault comes from puppet master Robert Morgan, telling the story of an animator terrorized by her creations. A gloriously grotesque watch, with some of the most disturbing frame-by-frame animation you’ll ever see, this one will likely sear its imagery onto the wrinkles of your brain.

In theaters February 23 .

a girl sleeping with a teddy bear

After M3GAN, Chucky, and Annabelle, you’d think folks would have learned their lesson with cozying up to creepy toys. But apparently not yet, as the little girl in this Blumhouse offering finds herself an attic teddy named Chauncey. Little does she know this stuffie is really just a host for the imaginary friend the home’s previous tenant left behind. And now he’s full of rage.

In theaters March 8.

a person holding a lit candle

On the heels of her rom-com hit Anyone but You , Sydney Sweeney returns to the big screen as star and producer. This time, however, she’s promoting a psychological horror story set in an Italian convent. Immaculate unfolds through its protagonist, Cecilia, a devout nun who learns she is pregnant with a “miracle” child. Whether the seed is that of God, man, or something way worse is for us to find out come spring.

In theaters March 22.

Late Night With the Devil

a man and woman sitting on a bench

Set in 1977, this refreshingly innovative take on found footage features a late-night talk show kicking off its sixth season on Halloween night and inviting one of its guests—13-year-old Lilly, the sole survivor of a Satanic mass suicide—to conjure the devil on live television. A SXSW 2023 favorite from Aussie brothers Colin and Cameron Cairnes, the occult film is a nerve-frazzling nightmare that would send the ghost of Johnny Carson running.

In theaters March 22; streaming April 19.

You’ll Never Find Me

a person in a blue robe

Starring Jordan Cowan and Brendan Rock, this two-handed chamber piece premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last June, where it was acquired by Shudder; and come late March, it will finally be available to stream. The story, a well-crafted tension-builder, hits its stride when a paranoid man invites a sopping-wet young woman into his RV to wait out a raging thunderstorm. The interactions and conversations that follow leave a trail of clues, lies, and hair-raising reveals.

Mickey Mouse’s Trap

The guys behind the new Scream franchise and Ready or Not , Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, are back, with another horror film that looks to be a blast on the docket. Abigail , a genre-blender that stars a ton of familiar faces (Melissa Barrera, Giancarlo Esposito, Dan Stevens, Alisha Weir, Kathryn Newton, and the late Angus Cloud ), features a kidnapping gone wrong, when a seemingly innocent ballerina morphs into fanged bloodsucker in a tutu, hell-bent on maiming her abductors.

A movie about a spider attack is heading to Shudder, but this time, there’s no John Goodman in a pest-control uniform to save the day. Infested (original title: Vermin ) is a French film from Sébastien Vanicek that impressed audiences on the festival circuit last year. But if Arachnophobia was too much back in 1990, then this creature feature about a man who brings a venomous spider home on his birthday and unleashes a cluster of creepy crawlies will definitely bug you out.

Return to Silent Hill

In 2006, Christopher Gans adapted Konami’s survival horror video game for the screen, resulting in a monster thriller starring Radha Mitchell as a mother looking for her daughter in the foggy titular town. A cult following was born, and though the fans didn’t care for the disjointed sequel from another director in 2012, they are getting hyped over this Return . Gans comes back to the world of Silent Hill , too, this time with a story about a man who ventures into the fog to find his long-lost love.

Representation in horror is getting good. With every Jordan Peele instant classic, Julia Ducournau mind-bender, and Ryan Murphy scream, marginalized groups have gone from purged bodies to characters who matter. Here, Euphoria ’s Hunter Schafer stars in Tilman Singer’s thriller as Gretchen, a 17-year-old who moves with her family to a German resort where creepy things happen. We can’t wait to add Cuckoo to the growing list of great examples of onscreen representation .

Movie Review: Things get scary for Sydney Sweeney in a creepy Italian convent in ‘Immaculate’

It’s not your imagination: Sydney Sweeney is everywhere. In the past four months, she’s been in a romantic comedy that turned into a sleeper hit, a superhero movie that didn’t and, as of this weekend, a bloody horror. Results have varied, quality-wise, but for someone the culture seems to want to (unfairly) pigeonhole as a specific type, she is really blowing through movie genres in record time.

She also happened to produce the horror, “Immaculate,” in which she plays a young American nun, Cecilia, who’s decided to join an Italian convent. Her character found God after a near-death experience at a young age and, after her parish closes, she gets a lifeline to go abroad and help tend to older, dying nuns. The prettiness of the new surroundings is just a front, of course, and she starts to discover some sinister happenings within the ancient walls.

“Immaculate” is a project that Sweeney originally auditioned for a decade ago, when she was 16. If anything, it is a great showcase for Sweeney’s range (she gets to go from somewhat meek to primal scream) and is full of interesting visuals, beautiful costumes and accomplished makeup work showing all manner of bloody, mangled faces and limbs. But it’s also a movie that does not seem as sure of itself or the point it’s trying to make.

It’s not hard to make a remote Italian convent creepy, or say something provocative and interesting about organized religion — quite a few horrors have succeeded here in the past. But “Immaculate” is not even confident enough to let us experience this place exclusively through Cecilia. No, it opens with a nightmarish prologue to give us a tease of what’s in store for our innocent heroine, like it’s a straight-to-streaming film that doesn’t want you to click onto something else. Being a theatrical release, however, you have to imagine that ticket buyers are going to give the movie the benefit of the doubt and not flee 15 minutes into an 89-minute run.

Or perhaps horror audiences want as much carnage and jump scares as possible — if that is the case, this should be satisfying enough. There are plenty of comically squeaky doors and close-ups of a terrified face wandering around corners in the dark by only candlelight. And the finale is fiery and violent and gruesome as well, with a very silly and perhaps unearned explanation of everything that’s been happening. At least it’s wrapped up, I guess?

But it also doesn’t stand up to much interrogation. Take, for example, its use of subtitles. Cecilia doesn’t yet understand Italian so is beholden to bilingual nuns to translate — which they don’t do entirely accurately or faithfully. Later, when she’s being interrogated by the cardinal (Giorgio Colangeli), we the audience are not privy to any subtitles and have to rely on Father Sal (Álvaro Morte) to translate. Are we to take him at his word when everyone else has proven to be unreliable? Again, why not just trust us to be in Cecilia’s shoes throughout?

This script, written by Andrew Lobel and directed by Michael Mohan, does not seem to really care much about Cecelia and what makes her tick beyond that one story from her childhood. The main nuance she gets is through Sweeney’s performance, which shows us that she does have a spark and the personality to rebel. There were some lofty ideas behind “Immaculate” that seem underserved (about bodily autonomy and such) and she gets several memorable movie star moments, but I want more for Sweeney than whatever this adds up to. She has the chops (a reminder to watch Tina Satter’s great film “Reality” ), she just needs the material.

“Immaculate,” a Neon release in theaters Friday, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association for “some language, nudity, grisly images, strong violent content.” Running time: 89 minutes. Two stars out of four.

The film from acclaimed writer-director Alex Garland ( Ex Machina ) imagines a near-future dystopia where the United States has been torn apart under the authoritarian rule of a three-term president (Nick Offerman). The story follows a journalist (Kirsten Dunst) and her colleagues as they make their way across a hostile and divided states of America with the hope of interviewing the president as the forces seeking to overthrown him close in. Much of the road trip adventure feels a bit like Garland’s breakout 28 Days Later — only with amoral militia soldiers touting assault rifles lurking around every turn instead of zombies.

Here are some of the early reactions from those in attendance:

“Alex Garland’s #CivilWar is unlike anything I’ve ever watched. It’s a big, viscous, action-packed war picture from A24, which means it brings with it a richness & depth you don’t get anywhere else. Garland’s best work – flawless cinematography & gripping from start to finish,” wrote Erik Davis.

“ #CivilWar is phenomenal. Alex Garland’s latest is a wholly consuming war movie. An epic but deeply intimate piece that uses the experience and motivations of a group of military-embedded journalists to highlight the deeply chilling reality of living in a world that never learns. The production value is through the roof. Between Rob Hardy’s highly immersive cinematography and the booming sound design, Civil War puts the viewer as firmly in the shoes of a war photographer as possible,” wrote Perri Nemiroff.

“Alex Garland’s CIVIL WAR: I’m speechless. A horrific tale. A journalism tale. An American tale, well-told,” wrote Alyssa Vidales.

“Alex Garland’s “CIVIL WAR” is an absolute fucking MASTERPIECE. A riveting, unflinching, visceral cautionary tale that’s scary as hell. Watching it, one can’t help but feel how close we are to this actually happening, making it a MUST SEE to stop it before it actually does,” wrote Scott Mantz.

“I’m speechless, Alex Garland’s Civil War is not only the best movie of the year but the most important. A haunting story that’s beautifully shot and led by a tremendous cast. There is nothing quite like it and you’re not ready. A true modern masterpiece!” wrote Luis.

“Um… Alex Garland’s Civil War is incredible. A true knockout. The movies I want to compare it to will force an overhype situation, so I’ll just leave it at that. One of the most engrossing movies I’ve seen in years,” wrote Eric Vespe.

Civil War has raised eyebrows for its timing , coming amid a contentious election year in which President Joe Biden has claimed “democracy is at stake” given his opponent Donald Trump’s history of attempts to subvert election laws. While the idea of a modern-day civil war might seem far-fetched, a  2022 poll  by YouGov and the  Economist  found that 40 percent of Americans believe a new civil war is “at least somewhat likely in the next 10 years.”

When asked about when he wrote the film, Garland said, “It was four years ago. I wrote it back then and sent it to A24 and they just said, ‘Yup, all good,” which was surprising. This is a brave film to finance, so it was super appreciated.” Garland has long been in business with  A24 , dating back to his directorial debut, Ex Machina . The action film is reportedly the indie studio’s biggest swing to date.

Civil War doesn’t offer much explanation about how the country gets to its perilous state (audiences do learn that the president disbanded the FBI), which the director said was intentional. Said Garland, “The film is intended to be a conversation. It is not asserting things. You want to leave space for people to bring themselves to the conversation. It’s important that it was a two way street.”

Civil War will be released in theaters and IMAX on April 12.

UPDATE : Alex Garland breaks silence on Civil War timing , why Texas and California are allies, what the film is trying to say, and blasts political polarization as “incredibly dangerous.”

New 'Ghostbusters' review: 2024 movie doubles down on heroes and horror, but lacks magic

scary sailboat movies

“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” returns the 1980s paranormal comedy franchise to familiar haunts, albeit with way more human personalities than spooky ones.

Directed by Gil Kenan (“Monster House”), the latest installment (★★½ out of four; rated PG-13; in theaters Friday) overcomes the growing pains of 2021’s frustrating “ Ghostbusters: Afterlife .” And a move to New York City harks back to the early days of Bill Murray , Dan Aykroyd , Ernie Hudson and the late Harold Ramis in heroic flight suits. Alongside familiar faces and newcomers, “Frozen Empire” rolls out a new supernatural big bad and more horror than the series has done in the past, yet it still often struggles to find freshness and recapture old magic.

“Afterlife,” directed by “Frozen Empire” co-writer Jason Reitman, was a “requel” that introduced Phoebe Spengler (Mckenna Grace), the awkward genius granddaughter of Ramis’ Egon. With mom Callie (Carrie Coon), brother Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and schoolteacher Gary (Paul Rudd), Phoebe got an assist from the old Ghostbusters in the "Afterlife" finale to defeat archenemy Gozer in Oklahoma. Since then, the Spengler family has relocated, taking over the iconic New York firehouse headquarters where Grandpa collected spores, molds and fungus.

As “Empire” begins, they’re tooling around in the Ecto-1 and taking on phantom beasts like the Hell’s Kitchen Sewer Dragon. But they’re also a public-relations nightmare clad in nuclear-powered proton packs: A bit of city destruction puts them on the radar of Walter Peck (William Atherton), the OG Ghostbusters’ bureaucratic nemesis who’s now mayor. He calls out Phoebe being only 15 and vows to shut them all down, a threat that winds up benching the quirky youngster.

They’ll soon need all hands on deck. When the firehouse's ghost containment unit gets dangerously full, the Spenglers team up with a paranormal research center founded by another original hero, Winston Zeddemore (Hudson). Meanwhile, a slacker dude named Nadeem (Kumail Nanjiani) rolls into the occult book store of Ray Stantz (Aykroyd) with an orb owned by his late grandma. The evil force imprisoned in this artifact accidentally gets loose, with designs on raising an undead army against humanity and bringing a big chill to the Ghostbusters’ doorstep.

“Frozen Empire” doesn’t skimp on the throwbacks, even weaving vintage toy commercials and a Ray Parker Jr. music video into the fictional narrative. A slew of legacy characters return, including the lovable Slimer: Murray’s Peter Venkman has a couple of fun scenes, secretary Janine (Annie Potts) finally gets to be a Ghostbuster, and Ray is an important emotional anchor as both father figure and spiritual center, who nicely taps back into the franchise's penchant for weird history.

Throw in “Afterlife” supporting characters, then toss in more rookies like Nadeem and an oddball librarian played by Patton Oswalt, and the whole thing gets too busy, overshadowing what “Frozen Empire” does really well.

This might be the closest “Ghostbusters” comes to going full fright-fest: Given the directing reins, Kenan leans into chilling visuals, creepy stakes and a palpable yet still kid-friendly sense of dread. (New baddie Garraka is more conventionally freaky than demonic Jazzerciser Gozer.) And the latest film carries over the coming-of-age bent from “Afterlife” with a subplot where Phoebe, in a parents-just-don't-understand moment, bonds with teen girl ghost Melody (Emily Alyn Lind). It does something new – the Ghostbusters usually take down specters instead of befriend them – while also giving new depth to Phoebe as the franchise’s most likable asset.

Although “Frozen Empire” improves upon the previous film and there's plenty to dig especially for young fans, it falls short of the 1984 classic's high bar. (To be fair, none of the "Ghostbusters" outings since have come close.) So, bustin’ doesn’t feel as good as it once did but we’re getting there.

To be sure, the unconvincing CG-snake of <i>Anaconda</i> falls far short of the still-impressive dinos of Spielberg’s film, but director Luis Llosa doesn’t let that discourage him. Instead, he puts together an entertaining flick about a giant, man-eating snake. Even better, Llosa gets an all-star cast to work with, reducing Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, and John Voight to charismatic fish food.</p>

<p class="p1"><i>Jaws</i> deserves credit for popularizing the nature attacks genre of horror film, but <i>Frankenstein</i> inspired storytellers just as much. Take <i>Bug</i>, the Jeannot Szwarc-directed picture about killer insects. <i>The Thomas Page</i> novel <i>The Hephaestus Plague</i> on which the movie is based doesn’t just settle for prehistoric fire-creating cockroaches unleashed on the planet after a catastrophic earthquake. Rather, it also has a mad scientist who engineers the ancient beasties, making them into giant, fire-creating cockroaches that can also fly. <p class="p1">Producer and director Irwin Allen spent most of the 1970s making big-budget, star-studded disaster pictures such as <i>The Poseidon Adventure</i> and <i>The Towering Inferno</i>. Welcome to the ‘Poohniverse’: ‘Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey’ Team to Unite Pooh, Bambi, Tinkerbell and More in Low-Budget Horror Crossover (EXCLUSIVE)

Poohniverse

Six years after “Avengers: Infinity War,” another film is vying to become the most ambitious crossover event in history, this time in the lower-budget cinematic realm.

The filmmakers behind “ Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey ” — the micro-budget slasher that sparked headlines for turning A. A. Milne’s jovial bear into a feral serial killer and made an incredible $5.2 million at the box office after costing under $50,000 to make — have unveiled “Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble,” bringing together Pooh and various other beloved children’s characters gone bad.

“As horror fans, we would love an Avengers that is all villains,” explained actor-producer Scott Chambers, who leads Jagged Edge. “It’d have Freddy Krueger, Jason, ‘Halloween,’ ‘Scream,’ all of those. Obviously that will never happen, but we can make it happen in our own little way, and that’s where this film has been born.”

Many of the characters set to appear in “Poohniverse” will first feature in standalone films coming this year and falling under Jagged Edge’s version of the MCU, the Twisted Childhood Universe. Among them are “Bambi: The Reckoning,” “Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare” and “Pinocchio Unstrung,” plus last year’s “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” and its sequel “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2,” which is being released theatrically in the U.S. on March 26. The upcoming films will include various easter eggs linking them toward the upcoming horrifying crossover.

“We’ve got access to all these concepts so it’s like a self-contained bubble and we can do what we want with them,” says Rhys Jake-Waterfield, who directed “Blood and Honey” and “Blood and Honey 2,” and will helm “Poohniverse.” “So yeah, it’s really exciting.”

Casting is to include Chambers returning as Christopher Robin, Megan Plactio as Wendy Darling, Roxanne Mckee as Xana and Lewis Santer as Tigger, with more announcements to come.

“Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble” is a Jagged Edge Production with ITN Studios and Premiere Entertainment handling sales. Stuart Alson and Nicole Holland will serve as executive producers for ITN.

“Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2,” from ITN Studios and Jagged Edge, will be released in cinemas March 26, 27 and 28 by Fathom Events.
