The choices are endless for you to find the perfect hired boat for just a few hours as a day charter, a couple days as a time charter, or a charter for weeks on the water in order to experience the special feeling of livng on a boat. Hire a yacht for a party or event, host some networking opportunities, sail for sport without any limits, have a relaxing holiday, or have a completely private experience – the choice is yours.
Business people or successful young entrepreneurs may prefer to travel at higher speeds and therefore to charter one of many motorboats available for a fun daytrip or to experience the luxury of a mega yacht with a skipper, crew and all the extras for an unforgettable week or two at sea.
A regatta sailor might want to hire a catamaran and experience sailing with friends for the first time, working the sails and dinghy a bit like in the America’s Cup, with hard wind blowing and testing out a higher Beaufort scale. A friend of nature may want a more relaxing holiday, in which case chartering a houseboat with a partner vacation season could be the way to go. With calmer waters, this sort of holiday is also perfect for an entire family including small children. This is a popular online rental because houseboats often require no boating license for the driver. As of a few years ago, houseboat charters throughout Europe have been largely allowed without a boat license, which has made sailing holidays with children even more popular. For the sailing enthusiast who has all different types of sailing licenses, booking a sailboat on a Riviera will test your abilities and challenge you to sail your hardest. If you don’t find the right boat in our search and booking engine for immediate hire for your sailing cruise, wedding at sea, or other event on the water, you can easily book by emailing Yachtico.com or by calling the 24-hour support line. You wouldn’t believe what all we can accomplish. Just contact us with your special requests! We have experts worldwide who have enough experience to make your wishes for your holiday be realized.

Top 20 Cruising Destinations for Your Bucket List
- By Cruising World Editors
- Updated: January 29, 2024
Wondering what the best sailing destinations in the world are? Whether you’re planning a sailing charter vacation or a journey on your own boat, these 20 sailing destinations are part of many sailor’s bucket lists. From the isles of Greece to Australia’s Whitsunday Islands, the colorful Caribbean to dramatic Patagonia, these locations offer something for everyone.
Windward Islands
Tropical rainforests, barrier reefs, secluded anchorages: In the Windward Islands, you’ll get a taste of all that the Caribbean has to offer, and plenty of fine trade-wind sailing to boot. For sailors, there are multiple choices for your Windward Islands adventures, and from any of them, you can choose to make your sailing vacation as laid-back or as challenging as you’d like.
Leeward Islands
The Leeward Islands are full of cruising hot spots, with much to offer to sailors, making passing through the Caribbean. lush scenery, vibrant reefs and a laid-back vibe make for the ultimate sailing destination.
Lesser Antilles
The Lesser Antilles, in the Eastern Caribbean, are among the best charter destinations on the planet. Why? Diversity and conditions. The winds, seas and harbors in the Lesser Antilles are nearly ideal 99 percent of the time, and landfalls are perfectly spaced. In many of the most popular chartering waters, destinations are 30 to 40 miles apart — or less. This means you can get up at a reasonable hour, have a thrilling sail, and still manage to clear customs by happy hour.
Cuba is one of those mysterious destinations for US-based cruisers: close, intriguing, but seemingly out of reach. In 2017, when regulations were a bit more relaxed for cruisers, Cruising World hosted a rally to the island nation. The verdict? Cuba is everything we expected, and so much more.
USA, Canada and Atlantic
The islands of the Bahamas are a cruiser’s playground — clear water, colorful communities and great sailing. The Bahamas offer endless islands to sail between and explore; from the Abacos to the Exumas, each island is unique.
Intracoastal Waterway
Those with a mast height under 64 feet can also take advantage of the beauty and convenience of the Intracoastal Waterway on their trip north or south through the East Coast. While navigating the ICW requires lots of motoring, when conditions are good, the sailing is spectacular.
Southern New England
Cruising through Long Island Sound, anchoring in the Great Salt Pond of Block Island, exploring the coast of Cape Cod – there are endless opportunities to enjoy a romp through Southern New England.
The Great Lakes
Some of the best freshwater cruising in the world, the Great Lakes offer endless opportunities for exploration. Each lake offers unique cruising grounds, ports and conditions, from uncharted rocky inlets on the Canadian shores, to bustling cities.
For as long as ocean-going sailors have been sailing the North Atlantic, Bermuda has been the crossroads and a popular race destination. But Bermuda is so much more than just a waypoint—it’s also a wonderful cruising destination.
Nova Scotia
Packed with geologic and cultural history, the beautifully quiet coast of Nova Scotia is a nature lovers dream. Spruce trees, granite, grasses, sea, seals and terns, there is no shortage of excitement here.
Greece Isles
The sailing can be challenging, but the landfalls — full of history, diverse towns and tasty cuisine — are worth it. Greece boasts thousands of islands, spread across an enormous geographical area stretching from the Aegean to the Ionian sea. Four of Greece’s five island groups are prime cruising areas: the Cyclades, the Saronic Islands, the Ionian Islands and the Dodecanese. Each group has its own unique character and charm, making each one worth exploring.
South Pacific
Cruising yachts from all over the world come to Fiji to anchor in the crystal-clear waters of the South Pacific. This Pacific crossroads is a refreshing break, with world-class snorkeling, beach combing and hiking.
Smack dab in the middle of the South Pacific, the remote and untamed Marquesas are an unforgettable sailing stop – if you can get there. The topography of these young islands reflects the dawn of time; the exquisite drama of the islands’ violent, volcanic origins has not yet been smoothed and worn, with towering peaks rising above anchorages.
Tasmania offers world class cruising, friendly, welcoming people, and a rich sailing history. The beautiful anchorages are uncrowded and private, and the sailing is world class. Just ask anyone who has ever sailed a Sydney Hobart Race.
Whitsunday Islands
Pristine white sand beaches begging for footprints; the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park just waiting to be snorkeled; and our charter catamaran tugging on her mooring lines, ready to set sail. Who could resist such a tempting welcome from the Whitsunday Islands? Not us.
Southeast Asia
Phang Nga Bay
Towering rock sculptures rise out of the water in Thailand’s Phang Nga Bay, providing a surreal backdrop for cruising. Anchor among the hongs and hope into a dinghy for an unforgettable experience exploring hidden caves and uncovering secrets from the 10,000 year history of the bay.
From the blustery southeaster that can blow 45-60 knots for days on end, the “table cloth” on Table Mountain, to the waterfront with all its great seafaring tales and bars and the beaches of the suburb of Clifton, Cape Town has it all. The weather is like Southern California; you can stay active in the great outdoors year round.
Madagascar is a true cruising gem. Its culture is a delightful convergence of Europe, Africa and the Middle East, as evidenced by the gourmet French meals, baked goods, mélange of rum drinks, vibrant materials for both traditional and modern dress, and the combination of French and local Malagasy language.
South America
The Cape Horn archipelago conjures images of heroic voyages through inhospitable landscapes and harsh, raw conditions, the true beauty Chile is that it’s remote enough to be pristine, but not isolated enough that you feel completely cut off from the rest of the world.
Cold, unforgiving and a challenge for even the most seasoned sailor, there isn’t quite any place on earth like Antarctica. Just ask anyone who has been, though, and you’ll find that the journey to the bottom of the world was unforgettable.

DESTINATION for sale
DESTINATION is a tried and true world cruiser built for voyages from the tropics to the polar climates. She is in immaculate condition courtesy of a meticulous maintenance schedule, generous budget and loving care from two owners and one main captain that has been with her for most of her life. She was built to ABS Class and MCA compliance and is ready to take her next owners and their guests on their future voyages. DESTINATION showcases many up-to-date features including a sloop rig with carbon mast and in-furling boom, six captive winches, flush deck hatches and recessed articulating anchors.
DESTINATION has benefitted from substantial refits every five years of her life. In her last refit that wrapped up in December 2020 with over $4 million spent, she benefitted from significant works including a major rig survey completion, exterior repaint of the entire yacht, a renovated interior including re-veneer of the upper salon/pilothouse walls using wood from the original stock of the boat, all overheads, flooring and soft goods were replaced and her engine, generators and systems were replaced, refurbished and serviced as necessary. She completed her 20-year ABS class survey in 2021 and passed with flying colors. The current condition of DESTINATION is, in one word, extraordinary. She has maintained her original practicality and appeal and boasts all the modern features optimized for owner and guest comfort.
DESTINATION’S interior is modern with a timeless layout. A lovely combination of neutrals and pops of color makes the ambiance warm, welcoming and fun. Forward of the cockpit through the double sliding doors is the upper salon/pilothouse. There is a generous lounge area with a deep sofa, a custom bar and a dining table for eight guests. The inside steering station has instruments and controls housed in a panel that lowers out of sight when not in use. The upper salon is filled with natural light that flows down into the main salon. There are stairs that lead down to the lower main salon that has been configured to be used as a dedicated lounging and living area complete with a 70-inch TV, large, comfortable sofas and chairs and a stunning handcrafted coffee table that is the focal piece of the room. The generous, U-shaped galley is forward of the salon where the chef can prepare delightful meals onboard.
DESTINATION welcomes eight guests in four beautifully-appointed cabins. The styling is luxurious and cozy with high-quality linens, silk and soft paneling and natural light. The master suite is full-width and consists of a bedroom area, a private daybed space and an en-suite bath. The bed is center-stage in the stateroom with nightstands on both sides and plenty of storage for belongings. There are two identical staterooms forward, each offering a centerline queen-size bed, sofa, closet and bedside nightstands. An additional smaller cabin features a full bed and a Pullman berth. An en-suite bathroom accompanies each additional guest cabin. DESTINATION accommodates six crewmembers in three cabins.
DESTINATION’s exterior lines are sleek and appealing to the eye. The visual impact is even greater thanks to her fresh custom paint application, achieved in the 2019/2020 refit. She received new decks in 2014 that were completely re-caulked in 2022. DESTINATION’s deck includes social areas at the forward cockpit when the tender is launched and the aft cockpit with the full dining setup and custom sofa. Drop-down curtains protect the cockpit during inclement weather and custom mats can be placed on the aft deck for sunbathing. Her opening transom provides a platform for easy tender boarding and access to the water along with a shower and dimmable lighting. A big achievement during the last refit, DESTINATION now features a totally custom second boarding platform to starboard midships. Part of the hull swings down to provide a very stable, very safe platform for tender access or water sports. This also serves as a “beach club” with its shower, lighting, built-in storage and a protected bench.

The 10 Best Sailing Destinations in the World
When most people think about adventure travel images of trekking through the Himalaya or going on safari in Africa are typically what come to mind. But sailing just might be the original form of adventure travel, sending intrepid explorers off to the far corners of the globe with little more than the wind at their back and the open ocean in front of them. Today, sailing the ocean isn't quite so dangerous, although it does remain quite adventurous. There is nothing quite like sitting on the bow of ship with the wind blowing through your hair and the sound of the surf crashing against the hull.
Fortunately, there are still plenty of great places for adventurous travelers to experience this feeling for themselves. To help you do just that, we've selected the ten best sailing destinations for those who would never consider a cruise but are still looking for a waterborne adventure of a lifetime.
South Georgia Island, Southern Ocean
Debbie Purser / EyeEm/Getty Images
Located in the Southern Ocean, South Georgia Island is probably best known for the crucial role it played in Ernest Shackleton's doomed Endurance expedition to the Antarctic. But the place is also a pristine environment that is home to thousands of penguins and numerous rare sea birds, including a variety of albatross that are only found there. Visitors also get the chance to see elephant and fur seals by the hundreds, while exploring the remains of long-abandoned whaling stations left over from a bygone era. Those stations have been inactive for decades, and as a result, whale populations have rebounded nicely. It is not uncommon to find humpbacks, sperm whales, southern right whales, and even blue whales just off shore, along with dolphins, and an array of other sea life.
Sailing the Southern Ocean is an adventure in and of itself, taking travelers across some of the most turbulent waters on the planet. The team at Classic Sailing are an experienced crew who have made that voyage many times however, and offer one of the best opportunities to visit South Georgie in a tall ship. If you're looking for a grand adventure out on the high seas, this is one that should certainly be near the top of your list.
The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
Westend61/Getty Images
The Galapagos Islands have long been a popular adventure travel destination, offering exceptional opportunities to view wildlife that simply can't be found anywhere else on the planet. Visitors can spot giant tortoises, sea lions, blue footed boobies, and the archipelago's famous aquatic iguanas. Snorkeling and diving in the Galapagos are favorite pastimes, as are kayaking and stand up paddle boarding, making this a great destination for those who like to stay active on their vacations.
Most visitors to the Galapagos stay aboard a small cruise ship while visiting the islands. But when Charles Darwin first arrived there back in 1835, he came aboard the HMS Beagle , a sailing sloop that was part of the British Royal Navy. Intrepid travelers can capture a similar experience by sailing the Galapagos too. Andando Tours offers excellent opportunities to explore this magnificent place, with tall ships and catamaran itineraries available.
The Whitsunday Islands, Australia
EyesWideOpen/Getty Images
When visiting Australia most travelers have the Sydney Opera House, the Outback, or the Great Barrier Reef on their bucket lists. Most have never even heard of the Whitsunday Islands , let alone considered visiting them.
Located off the coast of Queensland—not far from the Great Barrier Reef—the Whitsundays are a chain of 74 islands that are the Australian version of paradise. With spectacularly beautiful beaches, an abundance of wildlife, and waters that are a shade of blue that isn't found anywhere else on Earth, this is a place that visitors will never want to leave. The diving and snorkeling are practically unmatched and the scenery is simply awe inspiring.
Setting out from Airlie Beach, the so-called "gateway to the Whitsundays," you'll find plenty of sailing ships that offer everything from single-day escapes to three-day adventures on the open ocean. Visit Sailing-Whitsundays.com to sort through all of the choices.
Zanzibar Island, Tanzania
danm/Getty Images
Tanzania's Zanzibar Island is a destination that offers history, culture, adventure, and a chance to relax all in one amazing place. For centuries the island was a nexus of a trade and commerce for the Arab world and the remains of that heritage can still be found there today. But the azure-colored Indian Ocean also offers excellent snorkeling and diving, chances to go fishing, or just soak up the sun. Travelers will also find ancient villages to visit, markets to explore, and beaches to wander too.
A visit to Zanzibar is a perfect extension after finishing up a Tanzanian safari or as a destination in its own right. Sailing options include single day outings or week-long excursions, with Intrepid Travel offering one of the most affordable and full-featured options, including a seven-day journey aboard a modern catamaran that somehow manages to be both active and restful at the same time.
The Greek Isles
miljko/Getty Images
The Mediterranean is filled with great opportunities for sailors, but few options compare with island hopping off the coast of Greece . Places like Mykonos, Santorini, and Paros make for the perfect escape for those seeking a dash of culture and history to go along with their adventure. Sea kayaking is a great way to explore these islands, and day-excursions to wander the villages and landscapes are a must-do as well. As you would expect, the food is exquisite and the locals are accommodating, making this sailing destination one that will stay with you long after you've returned home.
Options for sailing out of Athens or Mykonos abound, with opportunities to travel for just a day or two or more than a week if your schedule permits. You'll find affordable options for Greek Islands excursion from G Adventures , with more upscale offerings coming from National Geographic Expeditions .
The Adriatic Coast, Croatia
mbbirdy/Getty Images
In a country filled with opportunities for adventure, Croatia's Adriatic Coast just might be the most breathtakingly beautiful destination of them all. With more than 1100 miles of coastline, not to mention a dizzying number of islands to explore , Croatia has seemingly endless miles of beaches and crystal clear waters to snorkel and dive. And when you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the vibrant Croatian cities, try sailing into some of the remote fishing villages that can be found in the numerous hidden lagoons that dot the shore.
If you're looking for a truly active escape while sailing the Croatian Coast, try REI Adventure's Croatia Island Hopper tour. This trip not only mixes great sailing and snorkeling opportunities, it also gives travelers the chance to go hiking, cycling, paddle boarding, and kayaking too. You'll also have the opportunity to tour the UNESCO heritage site of Dubrovnik, while enjoying local food and wines while en route.
The Bay of Islands, New Zealand
New Zealand has long had a rich sailing culture, which is due in large part to its amazing coastlines which offer epic scenery and plenty of places to explore. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Bay of Islands , a place that has launched countless sailing adventures.
The Bay is the perfect spot to go sea kayaking or fishing, but it is especially well known for its diverse wildlife. Seagoing travelers can spot penguins, whales, and dolphins all in a relatively small area. And when they're ready to spend some time on dry land, they can go ashore one any one of the 144 islands from which the bay gets is name. There, they'll have the chance to walk in pristine environments that are virtually untouched by man.
There are literally dozens of options to choose from when it comes to sailing the Bay of Islands. Thankfully, there is a website built to help adventurous travelers sort through them all. Start planning your trip here .
French Polynesia, Tahiti
TripSavvy / Lauren Breedlove
French Polynesia is the name given to a wide swath of islands and section of sea that is located in the South Pacific. There are a number of fantastic places to sail here, but Tahiti and its surrounding islands –– which include Huahine, Bora Bora, and Moorea –– may just be the best. You'll find crystal-clear and warm seas all year long, with great diving and snorkeling across the entire region. You'll also witness plenty of sea life, as the oceans are teeming with colorful creatures at every turn. The region also boasts some of the most pristine beaches found anywhere on the planet, many of which can only be reached by ship.
More experienced sailors can charter a ship in Tahiti and spend their days sailing completely on their own. Those of us who aren't seasoned enough to do that on our own will have to book with someone else instead. As you would expect, there are plenty of options to choose from, with the Offshore Sailing School being chief amongst them.
The British Virgin Islands
cdwheatley/Getty Images
The Caribbean has long been a mecca for sailors looking to navigate between its numerous islands, each with its own culture, history, and attractions. But the British Virgin Islands just might offer the best sailing in the entire region, giving visitors a chance to combine luxury and adventure into one epic excursion.
Some of the very best beaches in the entire Caribbean can be found in the BVI, many of which are in hidden coves strung out across the various locales. These secluded spaces make for stunning places to drop anchor, providing great opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, or just lounging in the sand. And when you're ready to go ashore, you'll find beautiful resorts, delectable restaurants, and some surprisingly great hiking trails to wander too.
Once again, G Adventures offers one of the best options for sailing in the British Virgin islands. The company's seven-day excursion out of Tortola is a good mix of activities and relaxation at a solid price.

Top 10 Sailing Destinations to Explore in 2023
Table of Contents
Making a top 10 list of sailing destinations is tricky because how do you limit yourself to just 10? Whether you’re looking for a self-drive bareboat, a fully crewed luxury catamaran, or even a funky old-school gullet, you can find lots of ways to raise sail in the following fabulous destinations:
- Newport (Rhode Island)
- San Francisco Bay
- Southern California
- British Virgin Islands
Rent. Sail. Repeat— Only at Boatsetter
Prevailing westerly winds make for some fantastic sailing on Lake Michigan, where you can practice tacking all day, cruise along on a beam reach, take in the fabulous Chicago skyline at sunset, or watch a moonrise reflected off the length of the lake. Twice a week in summer, between Memorial Day and Labor Day, Navy Pier sets off fireworks which you can enjoy from your front-row seats on deck .
If you’ll be the captain of your vessel, don’t forget Illinois boater safety course requirements .
2. Newport (Rhode Island)
Arguably the world’s sailing capital for centuries, there’s a lot for sailors to love about Newport, Rhode Island . The breezes are steady on Narragansett Bay, dockage is plentiful at numerous marinas and on mooring balls, and the sailing is mostly protected, so you never need to head out to the open waters of the ocean.
Newport is steeped in nautical history, and the city has been a magnet for international regattas, including:
- America’s Cup
- The Volvo Ocean Race
- The biannual Newport to Bermuda Race
If you rent a boat and plan to hoist sails on your own without a captain, make sure you’re certified via the state’s boating safety course .
3. Annapolis
The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the nation, with over 4,000 square miles of water and 11,000 miles of shoreline. A fair chunk of this sailing playground centers around the nautical town of Annapolis , also home to the Naval Academy.
Summer sailing offers calm waters and warm breezes , and many coves and rivers to duck into that you could sail Annapolis all summer long and not get to see it all. However, two things to watch for are shoals and the ever-present crab pots. Keep a good lookout for those and you may even spot the Navy cadets sailing by.
4. Tampa Bay
The largest port in the southeast, Tampa Bay , is made for sailors. The waters are protected, so the sailing is easy even for those who get seasick, and the Bay is fairly shallow, so it’s easy to drop a lunch hook just about anywhere. Most importantly, there are many places to explore, including Egmont Key, Caladesi Island State Park, Beer Can, and Honeymoon Islands.
If you want to check out the warm waters of the Gulf, sail under the Sunshine Skyway Bridge past Fort De Soto Park and out along the coast from Clearwater to Sarasota. You’ll be rewarded with a beam reach and clear blue water.
5. San Francisco Bay
San Francisco Bay is vast, and the weather is perfect for serious sailors. It doesn’t matter whether you’re city cruising from one marina to the next or dropping anchor behind Angle Island – there’s always something to do.
From the deck of a sailboat, you’ll enjoy views you simply can’t get from land, including:
- The city skyline
- The Golden Gate Bridge
- Alcatraz Island
- Fourth of July fireworks (near Pier 39)
Pro Tip: Fourth of July is a popular holiday for people to get out on the water. Boats get picked up fast. Plan ahead and book your Fourth of July boat trip now .
6. Southern California
You can sail year-round off the coast of sunny Southern California. The 200-mile stretch from Ventura to San Diego offers plenty of harbors to explore, including Long Beach, Newport Beach, and Dana Point, all of which offer plenty of rental boats.
You can even opt to go offshore to Catalina Island , which is a wildly popular weekend destination with the remote Two Harbors destination near the western end and the quaint town of Avalon to the east. Dolphin and whale sightings are common, and you can even sail right under the Pacific Air Show near Huntington Beach in October.
Set your eyes on the bluest of blue; you’ll want to set sail in the Exumas chain of the Bahamas. Head southeast on your charter to the beautiful Norman, Allan, and Shroud Cays for so much to see and do like:
- Hiking to Boo Boo Beach at Warderick Wells
- Swimming with pigs at Big Major
- Exploring the Thunderball Grotto (used for a James Bond movie set)
Don’t forget to snorkel on the semi-submerged plane on Norman Cay that once belonged to a Medellin drug kingpin. Two things to keep in mind in the Central Exumas – 1) the water is shallow and full of coral heads, so chartering with a captain may be a better choice, and 2) you’ll never see so many shades of blue as you will around these beautiful islands.
Sail the lovely Dalmatian Coast in Croatia, where the breezes funnel through the islands, and the water begs for you to dive in. The cruising grounds between Split and Dubrovnik serve up island after island, each one different from the one before and most designated as UNESCO Heritage sites.
The towns have medieval roots, and some served as shooting locations for the Game of Thrones , so there’s plenty to explore. The Island of Vis is popular due to the nearby Modra Spilja (Blue Cave) and Tito’s submarine tunnel, both of which you can enter. Try booking in June and September to avoid the worst of the summer crowds.
Set sail through history when you cruise the islands of Greece, whether in the Saronic, Cyclades, or Corfu. You’ll positively marinate in antiquities when you visit islands like Delos, Spetses, and Hydra. You can also party in Mykonos, snorkel in the caves of Milos, or hike the hills of Kya. Each island is a world in itself.
The Cyclades serve up strong winds and long distances, so the sailing can be challenging, and you’ll need to be proficient with Med mooring at city wall docks. If that doesn’t sound fun, charter with a captain and crew on some fun boats, including the iconic gullets.
10. British Virgin Islands
There is not a more popular cruising destination in the world than the British Virgin Islands in the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean. The trade winds are predictable, the navigation is line -of-sight, and there are restaurants and bars on every island, so you’ll never be bored. Snorkel at the Indians, dive on the wreck of RMS Rhone, check out the caves at the Baths on Virgin Gorda, and enjoy a lovely beam reach to the remote island of Anegada.
There are more boats available for charter here than anywhere, and the sailing is so easy you can opt to be your own captain. Most of the time is good to sail the BVI but stay clear from August to October, which is the height of hurricane season.

6 ultimate island-hopping itineraries for 2024
Explore the world from the deck of your own yacht with a skippered charter, bareboat or flotilla holiday. Whether you’re a first-timer, a foodie or a family, there’s a sailing itinerary to suit every type of traveller.
Craving a holiday with the freedom to escape the crowds and explore hidden coves, secluded bays and uninhabited islands? Dreaming of anchoring somewhere to take a dip without another person in sight? Sailing enables you to access remote spots that are often inaccessible by land and to experience the diversity of a region, exploring islands, villages and resorts in a single trip. Whether you're just starting out, or keen to set out with little ones in tow, these itineraries suit every type of sailor.
1. Best for first timers: British Virgin Islands (BVIs)
Calm seas, sheltered anchorages, reliable steady trade winds and easy line-of-sight sailing make the BVIs one of the world’s best sailing destinations for less experienced sailors. The proximity of its islands also means you only need to sail for an hour or two to gain a sense of adventure and achievement as you successfully navigate to the next port of call. Set sail in Tortola and continue on to Virgin Gorda to witness The Baths, a geological wonder made up of granite boulders that stretch down the beach into the sea. Look out for hawksbill turtles as you sail on to tiny specks of land such as the idyllic Saba Rock, and be sure to end the day with a rum cocktail or two at one of the region’s many laid-back bars, which are often perched on unblemished stretches of white sand.
2. Best for families: Croatia
The calm, clear waters of the Adriatic combined with favourable weather conditions in summer provide easy sailing for families and, with more than 1,000 islands dotted along the Dalmatian Coast, there’s a range of activities and attractions with short hops to keep kids engaged. Set sail from the picturesque marina village of Agana and cruise gently to islands such as Brač, Šolta and Hvar, encouraging children to help out on board while keeping an eye out for passing dolphins. With their sheltered bays and clear waters, these islands are ideal stops for families. Spend an afternoon paddling in Brač’s Bobovišća Bay, before setting sail for the remote islands of the Kornati Archipelago, a wild and beautiful national park known for its empty hiking trails. Sailing stops here can be educational, too, with a plethora of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and picturesque port towns steeped in history.
3. Best for food-lovers: Italy
Why base yourself on land to sample Italy’s incredible gastronomy when you can sail from region to region tasting the very best food and wine at numerous ports of call? Sunsail’s SailEatalia’s Italian Cuisine Procida Flotilla departs from the glamourous port town of Procida and sails to the Pontine Islands along the sun-soaked Amalfi Coast, offering stops to taste local cuisine, from classic dishes to regional delicacies as well as the country’s finest wine. Sample Ischia's iconic stewed rabbit in an independent restaurant at the top of a mountain or try the Italian coastal delicacy alici da portare (pasta with anchovies, olives and capers) in the quaint fishing village of Cetara.
4. Best for winter sun: Antigua
Gloriously warm weather between December and May and around 365 powdery white beaches lapped by clear waters make Antigua a popular winter sun destination for British travellers. Sailors can also relax knowing the region has consistent trade winds, safe anchorages and fairly short distances between ports, giving you more time to explore a variety of attractions at your own pace. Drop anchor in Deep Bay to snorkel around the famous shipwreck the Andes , discover uninhabited islands and visit famous places like Nelson’s Dockyard to sip cocktails and dance to the lively music of traditional steel bands.
5. Best for culture vultures: Croatia
A cultural treasure trove with 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites ranging from Roman fortresses to hilltop castles, Croatia is a mecca for sailors with a penchant for history and art. Start and finish a week’s charter in Dubrovnik to explore one of the best-preserved medieval walled cities on Earth, touring ancient citadels and Renaissance palaces, and be sure to include Lokrum, home to the ruins of a Benedictine monastery. Sail north and discover Mljet National Park and the island getaway of Korčula, thought to be the birthplace of famed explorer Marco Polo, where museums, galleries and excellent restaurants line the beautiful cobbled streets and defensive walls of the town.
6. Best for island-hopping: Greece
With thousands of islands scattered fairly close together, sailing from one to another is a breeze with the promise of a remote white sand or perfect pebble beach around every headland. Sailors are spoilt for choice, but the Ionian Islands, off the west coast of the mainland, are ideal for beginners looking for tranquil stretches of gin-clear water with light winds and warm temperatures in summer. Sail to Ithaca or Kefaloni in the south or to Lefkas, Paxos, Antipaxos and Corfu. While Corfu is known for its party vibe and high-end beach bars, others, like tiny Antipaxos, feature just a scattering of houses, no proper roads and a couple of charming waterside tavernas where you can watch local fishermen bring in the day's catch.
