What are the Different Classes of Boats?

Ian Fortey

Classes of boats and types of boats are two different things. Every type of boat fits into one of four classes of boats. While a type of boat can vary significantly in appearance and function, class is easy to understand. Boat classes are all determined by the overall length of the vessel.

The class of a boat is significant for you as a boat owner. Boats classes are required to meet certain safety guidelines based on those classes. The size of your boat determines what you need to keep on board. Let’s take a look at the different classes of boats. We’ll also get into different types of boats and see where they fit in terms of class.

Class A Boats

class b motor yacht

Any boat that clocks in at under 16 feet in length. That means it could be:

  • a fishing boat
  • A personal watercraft
  • An inflatable boat

Recreational boats that are less than 16 feet in length are not required to carry any day signals on board. That said, there are safety requirements. These are regulated by the US Coast Guard. It’s also worth noting that these regulations are slightly different for canoes and kayaks.

Canoes/Kayaks Under 16 Feet

class b motor yacht

For these vessels, a Type I, II, III or V personal flotation device must be available for every person on board. These need to be US Coast Guard approved flotation devices. They need to be the right size and wearable by the person who plans to wear them as well. If the person is not wearing it, it needs to be someplace they can reach it easily. We recommend anyone on a boat of this size keep their flotation device on at all times. The minimum requirement is that one be available and easy to reach. In an emergency, you can save yourself precious time by having it on already. This is especially true for children on boats.

Visual distress signals are required on the vessel if it’s being operated at night. Your night signal has to be made within the last 42 months as well.

Sound devices are required as well. A whistle is recommended but a horn will work also.

Other Boats Under 16 Feet

All boats under 16 feet require the same personal flotation devices. The rules for a kayak or canoe apply here as well. One for everyone on board that is accessible and wearable. A distress signal is also required for these boats. Sound signals are the same as for kayaks and canoes as well.

There are additional requirements for these kinds of boats if they meet certain conditions.

A B-1 fire extinguisher of any type must be on board any vessel under 16 feet besides a canoe or kayak. That is, if it has an enclosed engine, enclosed living space, or a permanent fuel tank.

A type I, II, or III Marine Sanitation device is required if the vessel has an installed toilet.

A backfire flame arrestor is required if the vessel has a gasoline-powered engine. The exception is if it is an outboard motor.

Enclosed engines must also have ventilation that meets Coast Guard standards.

Class I Boats

class b motor yacht

Boats that are between 16 feet and 26 feet fall under this classification. Any number of boats could fall into this class.

  • Smaller deck boats
  • Cuddy cabin boats
  • Pontoon boats
  • Aluminum fishing boats
  • Wakeboard boats

All Class I boats must have one personal flotation device of Type I, I, III or V per person on board. In addition, one throwable Type IV device is required to be on board. Often people overlook these on tow sports boats. They will only think of the person looking for a thrilling ride water skiing as the one who needs a PFD. The Coast Guard requires them for everyone, however.

A B-1 fire extinguisher of any type is also required to be on board. This is true, again, if the engine is enclosed. It’s not required for outboard motor boats. However, as before, if there is an enclosed living space or permanent fuel tank, then you do need a fire extinguisher.

This size of boat requires specific distress signals. You need a minimum of three day use and night use flares. You can also have a non-flare substitute for day use in the form of an orange distress flag. A Non-pyrotechnic substitute for night use is an electric SOS light. Flares must have been made within the last 42 months.

A horn or whistle is needed as a sound signal.

Class II Boats

class b motor yacht

Class II boats are any vessel that span 26 feet to 40 feet. This can include

  • Cabin cruisers
  • Bowrider boats
  • Trawler boats
  • Runabout boats

These boats meet the same requirements for PFDs as Class I boats. That means every single passenger on board needs to have access to their own life jacket or other PFD. The acceptable types are Type I, II, III and V. And again a throwable Type IV is also required. These recreational boats can easily hold over one dozen people. Even if you’re freshwater fishing in shallow waters, these requirements must be met.

At this size, either one B-II fire extinguisher or two B-Is are needed. Remember, marine plywood isn’t able to stand up to fire well at all. The extra extinguishers could be a lifesaver at this size of a boat. Nothing ruins some relaxed cruising faster than a boat fire.

Visual distress signals on this kind of boat are the same as those for Class I boats. That means three day use and three night use. Three combination day and night use signals are also acceptable. These are essential for any overnight trips on the boat. Even high performance boats can run into troubles in the dark. Make sure any signal flares have been manufactured within the last 42 months.

Sound devices must be present as with lower boat classes.

Enclosed engines must also have ventilation that meets Coast Guard standards

This class of boat is also required to have pollution regulation placards. Your boat will need a 5″ x 8″ Oil Discharge placard and 4″ x 9″ Waste Discharge placard.

Class III Boats

V-Series by Destination Yachts

These boats range from 40 feet to no more than 65 feet in length. This can include

  • Cigarette boats
  • Sport fishers

These are the largest class of boat available to typical boat owners. For these, the same flotation device standards apply as they did for Class II. That means one PFD of Class I, II, III or V is required for every passenger on board. Since different types of boats can carry passengers in greater numbers, this needs to be respected. Make sure every single person knows where the PFD is and how to wear it. Each person must have one that fits properly.

In terms of fire extinguishers, the rules change again with Class III boats. You will need one B-II extinguisher and one B-I extinguisher on board. Alternatively, you could have three B-I extinguishers handy.

Visual distress signals and sound signals are the same as the requirements for smaller class boats. That means three day use and three night use signals. An orange signal flag may substitute one of the day use flares, and an electric SOS light can substitute for one of the night use. A horn or whistle is also required.

This class of boat is also required to have pollution regulation placards. Your boat will need a 5″ x 8″ Oil Discharge placard and 4″ x 9″ Waste Discharge placard. If the vessel has a galley then it must also have a waste management plan.

At this length, the boat must also have the Inland Navigation Rules on board. This is the “Rules of the Road” that govern boating.

Boats Over 65 Feet

Some yachts and things like a ferry boat can easily be over 65 feet. These no longer qualify as subject to small boat regulations. Typically no one is going to own a personal watercraft of this size. The Coast Guard does have regulations in place if you are on a large vessel such as this, however. These apply to vessels from 65 feet up to 165 feet. After that, vessels are typically considered research, commercial, or military.

The rules regarding flotation devices remain static here. One Type I, II, III or V PFD for every passenger on board. In addition, one Type IV throwable device. It’s worth noting there that the “Type” system will not be around forever. The Newton system is slowly being phased on. Newtons measure pounds of force and help indicate how much a PFD can keep afloat. This buoyancy rating in Newtons has been in place since 2019. The transfer is going slowly to allow people time to adjust. Most PFDs you purchase now will explain buoyancy in Newtons.

For instance, a Type II flotation device is equivalent to a current PFD that is rated for 70 Newtons. This device should be able to keep most people floating face up in the water. Type III devices will be replaced with 70 Newton rated PFDs that do not turn you face up. Each device has a Newton rating plus icons. These explain how much weight the PFD is meant to keep you afloat and how it floats you. In several years time, all PFDs will follow these guidelines. That said, old PFDs are still perfectly legal and usable.

For fire extinguishers, weight becomes a factor at this size. Vessels that weigh up to 50 gross tons need one B-II extinguisher. Over 50 gross tons requires two B-II extinguishers on board.

Visual and sound signals are the same for the previous class of vessels. This class does have a variation in sanitation requirements, however. A Type II or Type III marine sanitation device is required for this size of a vessel.

Additional requirements are the same as for the previous class. This includes sanitation and ventilation. The backfire flame arrestor must meet the same requirements as well. A copy of the inland navigation rules must also be on board the boat at all times, also.

What Class are Fishing Boats?

class b motor yacht

There are dozens and dozens of kinds of boats in the world. You have banana boats, log boats, bass boats and so many more. That’s why the class system is broken down by length. It makes it much easier to categorize a boat in these simple terms rather than trying to manage each type individually.

As a result, something like a fishing boat does not necessarily fit into one class. Your fishing boat could easily fit into literally any one of these classes. Remember, a fishing boat is not even technically a specific kind of boat. A fishing boat is just a boat from which you go fishing. A pontoon boat or some high performance boat could be a fishing boat. An inflatable dinghy could be a fishing boat. There is no standard for that particular description of a boat.

Does a Fishing Boat Need All The Same Safety Gear?

Some people question the application of safety standards. A Class I boat that only has one person on board seems different than one with ten people on board. But the rules are adaptable. If you are the only passenger on the boat then you only need one flotation device. You only need the fire extinguisher if your boat meets the requirements for it. That means something other than an outboard motor.

Man powered boats do not require the same level of safety and concern that power boats do. That’s why canoes and kayaks are exempt from requiring a fire extinguisher. After all, what would be the point? But just because your boat doesn’t have a swim platform or whatever doesn’t matter. Smaller boats or bigger boats all have the same potential to get into trouble. These rules are meant to help prevent that as much as possible. What About Pontoon Boats and Deck Boats?

No matter what kind of boat you’re on, the Coast Guard requirements apply evenly. Again, this can sometimes seem unnecessary. Something like a ski boat may seem more dangerous than cruising around on a deck boat. If you’re just relaxing on inland waters trying to catch largemouth bass, it can seem like overkill. But these measures are designed to ensure safety. In fact, these are the minimum requirements that the Coast Guard has implemented.

Some boaters prefer to have additional measures in place. For instance, as we said above, we recommend wearing a PFD at all times. This is not specifically required, only that the PFD be wearable and accessible. We feel that, the more people on board a boat, the more important it is to make sure everyone is wearing a PFD. This can cut down on wasted time and confusion if an accident happens later. If everyone scrambles for a PFD at the same time, a bad situation could easily become worse.

The Bottom Line

Boat classification has no effect on how you enjoy your boat. It also doesn’t change what you are allowed to do on your boat. The only purpose of classifications is to account for safety on board. Larger boats need to take more care in keeping the boat and passengers safe. Understanding the requirement is key to ensuring the safety of everyone on the water. Make sure you know the full dimensions of any boat you plan to take out onto the water. Once you are aware, you should always do a pre-departure check of the boat.

It’s important to know if you have all the safety gear every time you head out. Make sure the personal flotation devices are all in good working order. Check the date on all flares or visual signals to make sure they meet requirements. Also, check the date on your fire extinguishers before heading out as well. Old gear should be replaced immediately. It’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Keep yourself and your passengers safe and you’ll be having a great time on the water.

Understanding the Classification of Yachts A, B, C and D

Understanding the Classification of Yachts A, B, C and D:

Since 1998, Europe (EEC) classifies yachts according to 4 categories A or B or C or D and this is a law. In order to sell a boat in the large territory of the EEC, it must be classified with a plate that mentions its classification and it must be clearly visible inside the boat, usually near the helm.

class b motor yacht

At first glance, it sounds very good when you hear class A, but what is it really, what are the differences, is it necessary to acquire a class A…

The brokers at ItaYachtsCanada have written an article on this subject in the past ( click here ), but here are the important characteristics to know about the subject.

The classification allows you to know in which kind of sea intensity you can safely venture, that is to say, taking into account the wind and the wave height in reference to the Beaufort index.

(At the end of this text, there is an explanation of the classes according to the Beaufort index).

Let’s say we focus on class A and B, on the major differences.

First of all, the differences are not very visible to the naked eye or it takes a trained eye to see them.

Depending on the type of water you plan to sail and if the weather guides you on each trip, a B class is also a very good choice.

Of course, you must have all the required safety equipment on board.

Ideally, a boater should always sail in rather peaceful conditions, taking into account the weather first. We always say that boating is fun, so stay away from difficult sailing situations. (Ideally, always with a Beaufort index of 6 and less, ideally a Beaufort index of 4 and less).

Many manufacturers have retained the parameters of the B class to build their boats, mainly for reasons of production costs and that boaters in general do not care much about these characteristics.

The problem is how to differentiate between the vast range of B class boats, how to distinguish those that are closer to an A class (B +) from those that are built as (B -).

How to find your way around, especially for a layman…

class b motor yacht

It is important to know that some manufacturers build their boats with an A approach, but without respecting all the mandatory specifications to be classified A.

Here are some guidelines to quickly see if the manufacturer has done things right.

– Inspect the portholes and closing mechanisms (Plastic or Metal)

– The presence of numerous drains to evacuate water (at the fly and cockpit), it is essential to be able to evacuate any water accumulation quickly.

– Height of the freeboard.

– Engine access hatch, well insulated and secured for water leaks.

– Bilge pumps (number, size and capacity)

– Mechanism to pump water from the engine room massively (e.g. possibility to use the engine water pumps with a joystick)

– The center of gravity of the boat is well balanced (rather low).

Hull joints, a very low center of gravity, excellent weight distribution, electrical system (24 V), are also part of the certification criteria especially for A boats, but difficult to assess for a yachtsman.  It is possible, but in a summary way.

The CE classification allows to differentiate yachts according to certain criteria present, we are talking mainly about structural strength, integrity of essential parts of the hull, reliability of propulsion, steering systems, power generation and all other features installed on board to help ensure the essential services of the yacht.

Therefore, it is important to understand that a Class A yacht is built to a much higher standard than a Class B. This is not reflected in the luxurious appearance of the boat.

What you have to remember is that the major enemy for a boat, besides a fire, is water infiltration on board which can destabilize the behavior of the boat, cause a stop of the engines, major electrical problems, in short which can quickly put the boat out of use and/or out of control.

A classification body such as RINA (see list at the end of this text) has been checking the activities of builders and classifying yachts for over 20 years.

If the boat is sold in the European Community, the classification is mandatory and must be visible near the cockpit. This same classification is not present when the boat is intended for North America or very rarely.

Do not hesitate to contact a professional broker, he will be able to guide you according to your needs, your criteria and especially the places of navigation.

As the CE classification is not always displayed when the boat is destined for the North American market, here are some references on this subject based on the most recent data available (subject to change without notice):

P.S. Let’s mention that as a general rule yachts over 80 ft are Class A, but according to the rules in place, the classification is no longer mandatory or mentioned beyond 79 ft.

There is also the dry weight which can help determine a quality yacht.

Don’t hesitate to compare yachts of the same size based on dry weight, you may be surprised.

For example, a 52′ yacht that weighs 30,000 lbs empty compared to another one that weighs 60,000 lbs empty, ask yourself some questions.

But be careful, it is more and more difficult to get the manufacturers’ empty weights. They have understood the importance of being rather vague on the subject or of making comparisons more difficult. Indeed, we are talking about LIGHT WEIGHT, which is difficult to measure.

The manufacturer who has confidence in thier boat will have no difficulty in giving a total warranty of at least 12 months, 24 and even 36 months.  Please note the  difference here between the manufacturer’s warranty and the dealer’s warranty .

Many European manufacturers sell their boats to dealers in America without a warranty. This means that the dealer assumes the full 12-month warranty out of his profit from the sale. The engine manufacturer, on the other hand, honors its own warranty such as Volvo, Cummins, Caterpillar, MAN, MTU, Yanmar. For other major components, it will be up to you to take the necessary steps to have the warranty honored, such as for the generator, the air conditioning, the thrusters, etc…

CE marked vessels are classified into four design categories according to their ability to cope with sea conditions characterized by wind speed and significant wave height. Depending on the type of navigation practiced, the boater must choose a vessel whose design category authorizes such practice.

– Design Category A: Recreational vessels designed for winds that can exceed force 8 (on the Beaufort scale) and for waves that can exceed a significant height of 4 meters, excluding exceptional conditions such as storms, severe storms, tornadoes and extreme sea conditions or huge waves (these conditions exclude force 10 and following).

– Design Category B: Pleasure craft designed for winds up to and including force 8 and for waves up to and including 4 meters in significant height.

– Design Category C: Pleasure craft designed for winds up to and including force 6 and for waves up to and including two meters in significant height.

– Design Category D: Pleasure craft designed for winds up to and including force 4 and for waves up to and including 0.30 meters, with occasional waves up to and including 0.50 meters.

CE Yacht Compliance Classification

29 March 2016

The CE Yacht Compliance Classification System is the European (CE stands for “ Conformité Européenne ” in French) dictating the standards for CE Certification for construction and sale of boats . Vessels in one of the categories of controlled products cannot be legally sold in the EU unless they have passed the tests to receive the CE Certification. This regulation applies to all yachts for sale and recreational craft from 2.5 to 24 meters, whether they are intended for navigation at sea or in inland waters. New or used boats coming from countries other than the Member States of the European Union are also subject to CE marking.

In 1994, the countries in the European Union adopted the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD), which they amended in 2003. This constitutes a single set of “harmonized” essential requirements for boats sold in any member country.

The compliance with the RCD is required by law in the European Union member countries, and third-party classification societies inspections and their certifications are required as part of the process of CE yacht compliance classification. Boats are given a CE certification at the end of the process, which confirms that they have passed and comply with the technical, construction, safety and legal requirements making them legally valid for sale in the European Union. In Europe, we call them commonly “CE compliant boats” .

CE certification required

Summary of the origin and CE yacht compliant classification and how certification works.

Since 1998, European legislation indicates that pleasure boats must carry the CE certification (or mark), requiring them to meet certain construction and safety standards. For this, the boats are classified into four categories according to their design and skills to face different sailing conditions depending on the wind force and wave height.

Knowing that the weather is a variable phenomenon, these categories are not intended to limit the distance boaters can sail away (this depends on onboard safety equipment), but rather to responsibly inform them about the capabilities of their boat to safely navigate based on the offshore weather conditions. For each vessel, the design category is characterized by a letter between A and D.

BEAUFORT scale

First, let’s start with the BEAUFORT scale. This scale gives you the status of the sea in order to plan your trips. It was the British admiral Francis BEAUFORT who imagined a scale with sufficiently precise criteria to quantify the wind at sea and allow the divulgation of reliable information universally understood. This scale consists of 13 degrees, from 0 to 12, which is remarkable in this scale is that it can assess the effect of wind on the surface of the sea.

We will focus on the scale with the forces of 6, 7 and 8 to our need for explanations. There is indeed a direct link between the Beaufort scale and the certification of yachts (see photo above of the scale to better understand the graduation of wind forces).

  • CE CLASS A yachts are designed for large sea voyages (everywhere), in which wind force may exceed 8 on the scale of BEAUFORT and waves can also exceed a significant height of 4 meters. These yachts are designed largely to be self-sufficient in this rather hostile environment. CAREFUL, in most cases, this is only theoretical.
  • CE CLASS B yachts are designed to travel off the coast (200 miles or less) in which the winds can be up to force 8 (not exceeding) and waves can reach a height up to 4 meters (not exceeding).
  • CE CLASS C boats are designed for travel close to the coasts and in large bays, estuaries, lakes and rivers in which winds can be up to force 6 (not exceeding) and waves may reach a height of 2 meters (not exceeding).
  • CE CLASS D boats are designed for cruises in protected waters, like small lakes, rivers and canals in which the winds can be up to force 4 and waves can reach a height up to 0.30 meter (less than 1 foot).

Rules of CE certification

The rules of CE certification for construction and sale of boats are designed to assess the structural strength and integrity of essential parts of the hull, the reliability, and function of propulsion, steering systems, power generation and all other features installed on board to help ensure the key essential services of the yacht.

You understand therefore that a CLASS A yacht respects a much more rigorous construction protocol than a CLASS B yacht and so on… Of course, it is strictly advised not to sail past a force 6 for pleasure yachting and no matter the class A or B. This is a matter of safety, comfort and pleasure being always present in your cruise.

To ensure recreational boating, always check the weather before each ride at sea and especially verify any potential changes every hour. In addition, you must always carry the safety equipment onboard depending on the type of navigation that you practice and the laws and regulations in the countries where you cruise, and feel free to be overcautious.

It is obvious that in case of bad weather, for example, it is better to find yourself onboard a CLASS A yacht, which will necessarily have a better safety margin, regardless of sea conditions… Before buying a new or pre-owned boat , always ask for the classification of your future yacht, this document is required for the new registration (in Europe).

A CE-Type Certificate (or homologation) is generally issued for production vessels manufactured in series by different shipyards , particularly European.

There are several classification societies capable of achieving the CE classification for construction and sale of boats , the main ones are RINA (Registro Italiano Navale), BV (Bureau Veritas), DNV (Det Norske Veritas), Germanischer Lloyd, LR (Lloyd’s Register).

Other societies and certifications

There are also other classification societies for vessels built or sold outside the EU such as ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) and NK (Nippon Kaiji). There are also other types of certifications such as the MCA (UK – Maritime and Coastguard Agency), which however is not a classification organization. We will write more articles on commercial classifications later.

Do not hesitate to contact us for any need for further information on the CE yacht compliance classification , our team at Allied Yachting is at your service.

Classification: Statutory certification explained

Is certification an unnecessary complication, the costs and hassle of which far outweigh the benefits, or a helpful and reassuring framework which sets the highest standards for structural and operational safety and safeguards life, property and the sea environment?

No one could possibly deny that the large yacht industry is, and has been for some time, in the throes of a boom in spite of a recent downturn since 2008. Some observers would suggest that this is in spite of all the new rules and regulations that seem set to dog the yacht owner’s every move. Others would suggest that it is through the introduction of rules and regulations such as the MCA’s Code of Practice for Safety of Large Commercial Sailing and Motor Vessels that the industry has been given the confidence to expand with such vigour, knowing that their investments are safer – both financially and physically – because of regulation.

Classification societies are non-governmental organisations or groups of professionals, ship surveyors and representatives that develop, publish and certify standards and technical rules to ensure an acceptable degree of stability, safety and environmental impact, among other things. They are authorised to certify yachts and vessels flagged virtually anywhere.

A classification certificate attests that the yacht complies with the standards developed and published by the issuing society

New construction and refit surveys carried out by a surveyor from the classification society under which the yacht is built are important inspections that take place at intervals throughout the duration of the project. They ensure that any and every installation, repair, upgrade or modification is carried out to the standards of that society. Classification surveyors are interested in the structural integrity of the hull, installation of equipment, stability, structural, engine and machinery surveys, electrical, electronic and ancillary equipment, rigging inspections, safety recommendations and ultrasonic thickness gauging.

Every owner has his own vision of what he wants his yacht to be and designers strive to deliver just that. The fulfillment of this vision in turn becomes paramount in the eyes of the building yard and others who represent the owner, so it is often the policies imposed in the form of building regulations and classification rules that act as the voice of reason. This ultimately allows a balance to be struck between the attainment of that vision and the safety and reliability embodied in the construction of a yacht built to class.

A classification certificate attests that the yacht complies with the standards developed and published by the issuing society. Periodic surveying of a yacht in service by the appropriate class surveyor, at intervals dictated by the appropriate classification society, is also required to ensure the vessel continues to meet the rules and thus maintain her in-class status. Should any defects that may affect class become apparent, or if damage is sustained between surveys, the owner or operators are required to inform the society concerned without delay.

Almost every yacht that is launched is bigger or in some way better than the last and, quite often, more complex than its predecessor

As independent, self-regulating bodies, classification societies have no commercial interest in design, building, ownership, operation, management, maintenance, repairs, insurance or chartering. Classification rules are not intended as a design code and, in fact, cannot be used as such. These are more generally covered by the flag state, which lays down standards, or codes of practice that dictate construction good practice.

Almost every yacht that is launched is bigger or in some way better than the last and, quite often, more complex than its predecessor. As this trend continues, so too is the involvement and role of classification societies increasing and evolving. But what exactly does classification entail, and how is it linked to the statutory requirements of the various flag states? These matters are often misunderstood, which can potentially result in a conflict of responsibility.

Classification

The classification process The classification of yachts may be regarded as the development and worldwide implementation of published rules and regulations which – in conjunction with proper care and conduct on the part of the builder, owner and operator – provides for the structural strength and, where necessary, the watertight integrity of the hull. The same rules cover any appendages to the hull itself.

Classification rules lay down regulations that govern the effectiveness, safety and reliability of the propulsion and steering systems and other features, as well as the auxiliary systems which establish and maintain basic conditions on board and ensure that guests and crew can be safely carried while the yacht is at sea, at anchor, or moored inside a harbour.

Owners sometimes see classification as an unnecessary complication offering no real advantage for the cost. Some even suggest that the classification societies exist simply to make a profit out of a yacht builder’s desire to build a saleable product.

‘This is a misconception and one that needs to be addressed,’ Paul Martin, a principal engineer at DNV, points out: ‘Classification societies are independent bodies without a commercial stake in the build, and are therefore in a unique position to make sure that the yacht meets requirements without considering commercial impact. This enables yachts to be built with safety of the yacht, her crew, other vessels and the environment given maximum priority, irrespective of cost.’

Owners sometimes see classification as an unnecessary complication offering no real advantage for the cost

‘Because most classification societies have enormous experience,’ he continues, ‘as well as a lot of data on the failure of various types of vessels, machinery and other connected disciplines, they can bring these to bear on new projects ensuring fees are justified, and at the same time enhancing safety against the most up-to-date maritime knowledge and good safe practice.’

Yachts are said to be ‘in class’ when the classification society believes that its rules and regulations have been complied with, unless it has granted a special dispensation from compliance for a particular aspect. In order to decide whether a vessel should achieve in-class status surveyors appraise design, surveys and reports on the vessel’s construction, machinery, apparatus, materials, components, equipment, production methods and processes of all kinds for the purpose of verifying their compliance with plans, specifications and rules, codes of practice, or their fitness for particular requirements.

Class surveyors can also provide other technical inspection and advisory services relating to yachts and maintain these provisions during periodical visits to ascertain that the vessel is complying with classification society regulations at all times. Any modification which would affect class must always receive prior approval by the society.

When a yacht is going to be built to class, construction plans and all particulars relevant to the hull, equipment and machinery have to be submitted for the society’s approval before the work commences. Subsequent modifications or additions to the scantlings, arrangements or equipment shown on the approved plans must also be submitted for appraisal.

Implementation Statutory aspects deal with issues such as stability, life-saving appliances, pollution prevention and structural fire protection. Generally there are quite clear dividing lines between class and statutory requirements, although there are a few exceptions.

Flag states

The flag state, or nationality, of a yacht is important because it controls which country has the right to prescribe and enforce laws governing her operation. A ship must sail under the flag of a single state. The most common method by which a ship is granted the nationality of a state is by formal registration of the ship with that state.

Upon registration the ship acquires rights and duties as a result of registration which vary depending upon the state and the conventions and treaties to which it is party.

The rights will normally include action in an international court if there is a violation of international law against the vessel by another state, and representation at international conferences and organisations.

The duties include the upholding of the law of the flag state aboard the vessel, wherever she may be in the world.

Quality flags will also provide a recognised reputation for excellence, helping the vessel to avoid lengthy Port State Control inspections in foreign ports, and give worldwide support from embassies and consuls of that state and the protection of its navy.

International Maritime Organization

Statutory regulations are not only produced by the marine administrations of countries, but also the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

While some marine or flag administrations have the ability and knowledge to produce their own legislation, this is not true for the majority of countries. As shipping is an international business an international organisation is needed to regulate statutory issues. The United Nations established the IMO for the purpose of adopting the highest standards concerning matters of safety, navigation, and pollution prevention. The IMO held its first meeting in 1959 and now comprises 165 flag state members.

The United Nations established the IMO for the purpose of adopting the highest standards concerning matters of safety, navigation, and pollution prevention

The IMO’s purpose is to facilitate the general adoption of the highest practical standards in matters concerning maritime safety, efficiency of navigation and the prevention of marine pollution from ships among governments. Since its inception the IMO has introduced 40 conventions and protocols, although it is the responsibility of member countries to put these regulations into effect.

Statutory Implementation

The process of statutory implementation begins with the development and adoption of regulations by working groups at the IMO. Before these regulations come into force they have to have been accepted by a certain percentage of the IMO’s member states. This can take some time as each country has to introduce these statutory regulations as part of their maritime law before they can actually become mandatory on the ships registered in those countries.

It is important to understand that the IMO can adopt international legislation but that it remains the prerogative of the flag state to implement and enforce it. If a yacht registers with a country that has accepted these regulations then the yacht and her operators have to comply with them.

Maintenance of compliance is verified by a regular survey regime, which is the responsibility of the flag administrations and normally carried out by flag surveyors.

Not all flag administrations have the expertise or manpower to carry out the survey regime themselves, and they often delegate this work to classification societies

This arrangement means that the same class surveyor can issue certification on behalf of a flag state for compliance with, amongst other things, the MCA Large Yacht Code and Load Line Conventions. The class surveyor can also handle issues covered by the various annexes contained within the MARPOL Regulations, such as the prevention of oil, sewage and air pollution.

Class surveyors are often empowered by the state to inspect and certify crew accommodation, safety equipment, safety radio requirements, safety of navigation requirements, international tonnage, Suez and Panama Canal Tonnage Certification, and United States Coast Guard compliance. They are also frequently called on to service the requirements of SOLAS whenever a yacht becomes liable to comply with it.

Clearly, classification and statutory certification often go hand-in-hand where statutory certification requires classification of the yacht, and where a classification society requires valid statutory certification for the class to be valid.

Category A “Ocean” Certification – What Does It Mean?

MJM made it a primary objective that all MJMs would be certified at the highest level of safety possible… which meant those models under 40 feet are ISO CE Certified Category B Offshore, while the 40z and 50z are Certified ISO CE Certified Category A Ocean. There are no other boats of their type, of any size, achieving this high level of offshore safety. In fact, in the worldwide database of the International Marine Certification Institute (IMCI), we have only identified two other models under 40-feet with this certification, both being heavy displacement trawlers. The former achieves this with a low vertical center of gravity and the latter with massive tonnage. What does ISO Certification mean and how should it affect one’s peace of mind on the water? Let’s take a look at the subject.

When the European Union started in 1998, a Recreational Craft Directive was developed to set design/building standards for recreational boats up to 24 meters (79 feet). New and used boats sold in Europe, including boats built in the U.S. or anywhere else being exported to Europe, had to be certified as complying with one of four design categories for seaworthiness. These categories are based on factors such as the wave height and wind speed a given design is capable of handling, plus hull scantlings/strength and stability.

In essence, the further offshore a vessel is expected to venture, the greater the requirements for the vessel’s construction strength, stability, reserve buoyancy, resistance to flooding, deck drainage, crew safety, and other seaworthiness criteria have to be. Let’s take a look at the four categories.

class b motor yacht

Category A — Ocean  – This is the category with the toughest standards and covers vessels 40’ and over designed to be self-sufficient for extended voyages. It is defined as the “category of boats considered suitable for seas of up to 23 feet (7 meters) significant wave height and winds of Beaufort Force 9 (41-47 knots) or less, but excluding abnormal conditions such as hurricanes.”

Category B — Offshore  – These boats are designed to go offshore with the ability to handle winds up to gale force 8 of 40 knots, and seas up to 13 feet (3.96 meters).

class b motor yacht

The difference between Category A & B is shown in the above graphic,  where Mass is tons and AVS is the Angle of Vanishing Stability when the boat goes upside down. Category A boats need to be to the right of and above the blue line and a Category B boats to the right and above the red line.

Category C — Inshore  – These boats may venture away from the protected harbors, but within striking distance of home… operating in coastal waters or large bays and lakes with winds up to 27 knots with and significant seas 8 feet (2.44 meters) high.

Category D — Inland or sheltered coastal waters  – These are your typical day boats, operating in protected harbors, small lakes and rivers with winds to Force 4 (up to 16 knots) and significant wave heights to 4 feet (1.22 meters).

Now This Is Important

While a builder may claim that a boat is designed to a certain standard, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it ends up being built to it, unless inspected and certified by an IMCI (International Marine Certification Institute) surveyor, AND the builder can show you this plaque affixed to a bulkhead.

class b motor yacht

Because the number of people in the boat can reduce stability, the plaque shows the max number of people for Category A conditions, which on the 40z is 16. That’s not a USCG limit for liability purposes at all times. That’s just for Category A conditions.

Good story here. When Bob Johnstone was told that the 50z could carry only 2 more people under Category A than the 40z (18 versus 16), he was concerned about losing a 50z sale to a 40z owner who was moving up, because he wanted to be able to take 20 or so friends on the ICW to eat at Coconuts Restaurant near Bahia Mar… and might be concerned about the liability. “No worries,” said the IMCI surveyor, “We can provide the 50z with a ‘B’ rating as well as an ‘A’ rating, showing he can carry 30 people…and if he’s just going down the ICW or close to shore, you can post a ‘C’ rating, too, showing a capacity for 50 people.” Bob thought was going a bit too far and was happy to settle with the following plaque for the 50z.

Impact on Design and Manufacturing?

MJM Yachts is dedicated to producing the safest, strongest and most durable yachts possible. For this reason, while those under 40 feet can only be rated “B,” each of our powerboats is designed and built to exceed small craft structural requirements for ISO Category A Ocean. ISO requirements for strength are based on a design’s top speed and the expected impact to be absorbed by hull bottom and sides, as well as decks, bulkheads, structural grid, and any part of the vessel’s structure. The laminate schedule and materials are then specified to meet such stringent requirements.

class b motor yacht

ISO standards for polyester or vinylester resin and the 50:50 glass-to-resin ratio are lower than those achieved on MJMs, built by Boston Boatworks. An MJM is built using a wet prepreg epoxy, Kevlar, Eglass and Corecell with a glass-to-resin ratio of 62:38. Epoxy is significantly more expensive, but 25% stronger, unlikely to crack with use, and is water-resistant… which is why epoxy is used to coat the bottom of boats suffering from osmotic blistering. The MJM is built right from the start!

class b motor yacht

That’s Not All…

ISO CE certification also takes into account engine emissions. In a world where greenhouse emissions are taking their toll on our environment, this is an important point. Meeting strict ISO CE emissions standards is comparable to meeting similar U.S. CARB requirements.

Additionally, sound levels will come into play. Boats are limited to 75 decibels for a single engine and 78 decibels for twin, triple or quad installations from a distance of 25 meters.

Highest Standards for MJM Yachts

MJM meets and exceeds all applicable standards, because ISO CE standards are more stringent than those of the United States Coast Guard (USCG), American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), or National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) which mirror ABYC.

class b motor yacht

Boats sold in the U.S. do not have to be ISO CE certified… which costs upwards of $20,000 per model. USCG regulations require safety items such as PFDs and flares, carrying capacity for boats under 26 feet (7.93 meters), and level flotation if swamped for boats 20 feet (6.1 meters) and under. ABYC has distributed American versions of ISO CE Standards and Recommendations…but, they are strictly voluntary. Most critically, there are no ABYC design categories to differentiate between boats of different capabilities suitable to differing sea and wind conditions.

NMMA certification in the U.S. requires only about 70% of the ABYC recommended standards. While most U.S. builders follow the ABYC standards, and indeed many exceed those required by the NMMA, they are not mandatory as is the case in Europe with ISO CE mark standards and don’t involve the cost and post-build survey inspection of ISO.

The MJM Category A Ocean certification ensures MJM owners are boating on a stronger, more stable yacht, designed and built to exceed the highest standards in the world. It means having the peace of mind that comes with knowing that should you find yourself in weather and sea conditions outside your prior boating experience, you will be in one of the safest powerboats in the world. At sea, that comfort is the most important form of comfort a yacht can have.

AIS B+ explained: How to see and be seen on the water

  • Top stories

A new generation of AIS B+ transponders claims to make leisure boats more visible. We explain how

Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) may have originally been conceived as a collision avoidance system for commercial shipping but in recent years they have become a popular safety aid for leisure boats as well.

Not only does AIS allow you to see and be seen, even when out of sight due to darkness, fog, land or range, but it is also becoming a useful navigation tool now that transponders are being fitted to beacons, buoys and other aids to navigation. AIS SARTs (Search And Rescue Transponders) have also been approved for use as man overboard devices, which can be picked up by SAR helicopters as well as AIS-equipped surface craft.

Until recently, however, AIS has operated a distinct two-tier system: Class A transponders, which are mandatory on all vessels over 300GT or carrying more than 12 passengers, and Class B transponders that allow smaller fishing and leisure vessels to fit a lower power, lower cost transponder.

The trouble is that leisure boats equipped with AIS B transponders may not be quite as visible as you think, especially in busy areas with multiple AIS targets. Now a change in the rules and a new generation of AIS B+ transponders has helped level the playing field, so what are the changes and how do they affect potential buyers?

How AIS works

To help explain the changes you first need to understand how AIS works. An AIS transponder consists of a GPS receiver and a VHF data radio. The transponder transmits this GPS position in digital form on two VHF channels dedicated to AIS (161.975MHz and 162.025MHz).

Recommended videos for you

In order to avoid multiple devices transmitting at the same time, AIS transponders use a system called Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA). Each transponder communicates with others in the area to avoid clashes and claim its own short 26.6 millisecond time slot. The system allows up to 4,500 craft to operate in the same vicinity, automatically giving priority to those that are closest and therefore likely to be at greater risk of collision.

ais-explained-AIS-transmitting.jpp_274722762_491406861

All AIS equipped boats are constantly communicating with each other using short bursts of VHF transmissions

However, the way different classes of transponder get their time slot varies. Class A transponders use a system called Self Organised Time Division Multiple Access (SOTDMA), which enables them to negotiate with other Class A transponders to reserve a time slot and book future ones. Class B transponders use a different technology called Carrier Sense Time Division Multiple Access (CSTDMA).

This allows Class B transponders to listen in to Class A transponders and grab an empty time slot to make their transmission. The system is designed so that Class A transponders always take priority over Class B ones, meaning that a Class A transponder will occasionally steal a time slot from a Class B one and force it to delay its transmission until another empty slot appears.

The number of transmissions that a transponder makes varies according to several different parameters, including Class (A or B), speed, navigation status and whether it is manoeuvring. The Class A transponder of a fast-moving ferry may output its position every couple of seconds while a Class B-equipped pleasure vessel will only transmit every 30 seconds.

Raymarine DockSense: Virtual fender makes this boat uncrashable

Raymarine clearcruise brings augmented reality to boating tech.

A Class A transponder also transmits at 12.5W while a Class B transponder only transmits at 2W – a third of the power of a 6W handheld VHF. This restricts Class B transmissions to a maximum range of 8-10 nautical miles and means that traditional Class B transmissions are often not received by the AIS satellites that provide global vessel tracking.

AIS B+ explained

The new Class B+, otherwise known as Class B SOTDMA or Class B 5W, bridges the gap between Class A and Class B transponders, offering clear advantages for some types of vessels and applications.

Class B+ uses the same SOTDMA technology as Class A and therefore has the same priority when it comes to reserving a time slot, guaranteeing that it will always be able to transmit, even in busy AIS congested waters.

It also increases the transmission rate in line with your speed (but is unaffected by other manoeuvres), giving other vessels a clearer and more up to date view of where you are.

ais-explained-Princess in fog_274768012_491406861

While an AIS transponder is no replacement for a radar, it can help you be seen by commercial traffic

For displacement motor boats the more frequent updates may not make a big difference, but a planing power boat travelling at 23 knots will move 360 metres in the 30 seconds it takes one of the older Class B transponders to transmit its next signal (or 0.5nm at 30 knots). On a boat equipped with a Class B+ transponder travelling at 23 knots or more, the update rate is 5 seconds, so would only travel 60 metres between updates.

Finally, Class B+ transponders have a higher power transmission of 5W instead of 2W, which not only increases the range over which it will be received by other boats (assuming there is good antenna height and performance) but also significantly improves the ability of AIS satellite receivers to track your position.

Which type should I fit?

The answer depends on the type of boat you have, the sort of cruising you do and the budget you’re prepared to spend. The cheapest solution is to fit an AIS receiver or download one of the many apps that use shore-based reception networks.

This is fine for showing AIS traffic in your vicinity and allowing you to communicate with them using their MMSI number, but it doesn’t make your boat visible to other AIS users.

Class A transponders are at the opposite end of the scale but cost around £2,000, have an integral AIS display and could be considered overkill on a smaller boat that is predominantly used for coastal cruising .

ais-explained-Ship in fog Poole_274768022_491406861

At night or in fog it can be very hard to see what’s going on around you, especially if it’s shielded behind a headland or another larger craft

It’s also something of a myth that big ships have the option to ‘switch off’ Class B transmissions in busy areas. There is no filter option on commercial or leisure AIS receivers, so provided it picks up a Class B transmission, it will trigger collisions risk alarms just like a Class A one. Only when overlayed onto a big ship’s ECDIS screen can the ship’s master choose to filter out the visual clutter of Class B targets (but not the transmission itself).

For smaller craft a Class B ‘black box’ transponder costing around £500 and linked to a multi-function display should be fine. However, the limited range and frequency of transmissions could prove a drawback, particularly on faster craft or those venturing further afield where the higher transmission power will significantly improve the ability of AIS satellites to track your position once out of range of surface-based VHF. In these circumstances spending the extra £150-£200 for a Class B+ transponder makes good sense.

None of them should be seen as a replacement or alternative to a radar because they don’t pick up land, squalls or other boats and obstacles that don’t have a transponder fitted.

Digital Yacht, Raymarine , Simrad, Garmin and Ocean Signal all offer Class B+ transponders for around the £700 mark. If you’re looking to fit AIS for the first time or to upgrade an existing Class B set, a Class B+ transponder looks like the logical next step.

With their new 88  footer from the Double Deck range, Sunreef are unveiling an ultra-comfortable cruising catamaran built for an experienced boating family, and are confirming their ability to complete fully customized projects on the same timescale as production boats.

It took no more than 9 months for the Sunreef 88 DD, first announced at the 2016 Cannes boat show, to see its hulls hit the water in Gdansk, Poland.  Yet this is not just a well-honed semi-custom boat, but a brand new model in the range which is already known to connoisseurs and necessarily demanding owners. Having owned many of the best in English and Italian motor yachts, this family got into sailing with a beautiful 25 meter ketch.  The natural instability of a heeling monohull prompted them to ask Ian Sellers, their skipper, to think of another solution.  The choice of a sailing catamaran was a logical one: the space, stability, low draft, panoramic view and the economical running are irrefutable arguments for those who want XXL-sized comfort.

A good average speed to cross the Atlantic or to reach new anchorages in the Caribbean islands after a beautiful summer season in the Mediterranean also guided their choice.  It simply remained to find a shipyard capable of satisfying the wishes of the owner.  With a budget of more than 4 million euros, this owner was looking for a boat that was not just ultra-equipped and of the highest quality, but a unit that was entirely made ...

DISCOVER THE MODEL

Description.

The start of the ambitious Sunreef 88 Double Deck project was officially communicated during Sunreef Yachts’ press conference at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2016. After eight months of intensive work, the shipyard proudly announced the launch of this catamaran with a zealous, sporty look.

An experienced yachtsman switching from a massive motor yacht , the owner decided to commission the Sunreef 88 Double Deck to pursue a more stable navigation style with greater living space. Indeed, a challenging project for the shipyard’s engineering and design teams.

Nonetheless, this journey was destined to keep the promise of delivering a state-of-the art fully customized sailing catamaran from the start. To achieve the goal of building a seaworthy and dynamic catamaran, Sunreef Yachts’ team of naval architects conceived a completely new yacht design which seemed far sportier than the rest.

Same as all yachts within her range, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck too features a mezzanine level inside the saloon and a spacious master stateroom with a panoramic view in the bow part of the main deck. However, her superstructure was granted a more aerodynamic aspect. As a result, the 88-footer emphasis equally on both performance and luxury, offering over 300m² of living space and an outstanding sailing experience.

Despite this, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck remains a family-friendly yacht offering the best of comfort and safety. The innovative composite superstructure of the sailing yacht conceals a smart and functional layout with luxurious accommodations for eight guests and up to five crew members.

Upon the owners’ request, the interior decor of the Sunreef 88 Double Deck features exclusive natural materials: Chambord oak, linen, leather, natural stone, and quartz tiles – all contribute to the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the sailing yacht . The feeling of warmth was also achieved through applying numerous orange accents to the interiors – an important color for the owner’s family who consider it to be a symbol of energy.

New Sunreef 92 Double Deck Sailing Catamaran

catamaran boat double decker

From the same people who brought you the original Sunreef Yacht, comes the new Sunreef 92 Double Deck , with a new design which not only streamlines the deck house, but tops it with a giant 40 m 2 fly bridge.

This was inspired by similar designs found on other super yacht designs. In collaboration with K-Epsilon and Rivoyre Ingenierie , The Sunreef Naval Architecture Bureau has intensely studied performance and sea capabilities using state of the art CFD, computational flow dynamics to create the ultimate in catamaran luxury.

Using integrated stepped hull chins, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck catamaran increases interior space, without compromising performance. Now this yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests, in up to 5 double luxury suites, as well as a crew of four.

Sunreef’s 92 Double Deck also features a canoe style boom and carbon mast, one of this manufacturer’s specialties. How are they able to accomplish such feats? They added a new mezzanine floor, which includes a coffee table and lounge, located on the port side of the main deck dining area, freeing up more space below for larger cabins and storage space, or even more suites if you prefer.

Because of this innovative design modification, now the owner’s suite occupies two floors of the entire front area of this yacht, with a private luxury office, gym and leisure area on the upper level, with the bathroom, wardrobe and storage area below deck. Each cabin has an extended size, three way access to their King sized beds, with spectacular panoramic sea views. Not only this, but each luxury suite comes with its own separate bath and shower area, large closets, storage lockers, as well as their own air conditioning and a comprehensive entertainment system.

With a LOA of 27 meters, an 11.2m beam, and a 1.6m draft, this super yacht has a 80 ton displacement. It will also be powered by two 405HP 1200 L/3170 Gal engines, and will be able to cruise at speeds up to 15 knots. The 70m 2 cockpit will also include a large dining area, sunbathing mattresses, and diving equipment. Its spacious fly bridge is fitted with a jacuzzi, two wet bars, barbecue, ice makers and even a pair of jet skis. It will also include a tender, hidden in a specially built locker under the main sun pad of the cockpit.

Even though this is only the second of such models, it isn’t hard to see why the Sunreef 92 Double Deck sailing catamaran is on it’s way to be one of the most sought after luxury yachts. With it’s innovative design, state of the art electronics, and focus on luxury, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck is top of the line, and a must for people who may still think they have it all. Don’t miss out on your own little piece of paradise.

A seafaring adventure on island routes double-decker catamaran cruise.

A seafaring adventure on Island Routes double-decker catamaran cruise

Embark on a luxury catamaran cruise adventure out of Ocho Rios, Jamaica that takes adventure to new heights.

Standing on the dock, I pause a moment to let my gaze travel slowly upwards at the gleaming catamaran floating before me. Rocking gently in the calm Caribbean Sea, the beautiful double-decker  Calipsoul  seems familiar yet exciting and new to me all at the same time. I had chosen Island Routes Catamaran Dunn’s River Cruise the last time I was in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. It had been the perfect combination of relaxation and excitement that I had been looking for. We had also done the romantic Lovers Rock evening cruise, literally sailing into the sunset together. Making the cruise reservation Both times it had turned out exactly as promised and this time around when I knew I was heading back to Jamaica, I reached out to the wonderfully helpful Island Routes team yet again. I spoke with them about how much I had enjoyed the last catamaran excursion I did with them and shared that this time I would be coming with a group of friends and family of all ages. I had enjoyed the snorkeling aspect of the Dunn’s River cruise so much but it had been fairly short and some of my group said they really wanted to let loose and relax.

Island Routes Reggae Family catamaran cruise They suggested the Island Routes Reggae Family catamaran cruise. They explained that it was like The Dunn’s River cruise minus the climbing, which my mom was happy to hear about, and a lot of time spent exploring the underwater world. Then they told me how great my timing was as they now have a brand new double-decker catamaran! To be honest, I couldn’t quite picture it so I didn’t know what to expect. Standing here, about to step onto the Calipsoul , I am filled with delight as the kids all leap aboard. We aren’t the only family on board that day and as my group is fairly large, coming over on the shuttle service from the Beaches all-inclusive family resort, I had been worried about feeling crowded. Yet, what we discover is the perfect blend of being able to find ample areas for ourselves while also having the opportunity to meet other people as equally excited as we are.

Snorkeling lesson Once in the water, we are directed by the crew, who have joined us, where to swim and, along the way, they make sure to point out coral formations and beautiful fish ensuring we have an amazingly immersive experience (pun intended). I explore for ages and I am very excited as I brought my waterproof camera with me this time and aim to meet my self-imposed challenge of taking an underwater selfie with tropical fish. Although unsuccessful because they move pretty quickly, I still have a blast. Suddenly, someone is tapping me on my shoulder and I pop my head up to see one of the crew members guiding me back to the boat. Making my way back I realize that, as strong a swimmer as I am, I’m pretty happy to have the life vest on as it allows me to keep looking underwater while I make my way back without having to put in too much effort in keeping myself headed in the right direction so all my focus is on the magical world below me. Trampoline for the kids, hammocks for the adults We climb aboard and the teenagers head to the trampoline area (I was told that’s what it’s called). For people who may not normally hang out on a boat, this area serves an engineering purpose but is also a pretty cool place to just hang out on as it’s like a flat stretched-out hammock where you can just lay out and chill. I divest myself of the fins, mask, and vest and realize I’m pretty hungry! Lunch on the ocean Luckily, the food comes out and everyone piles up their plates with tropical fruit, delicious wraps and chips, and salsa, and we head for a sunny spot on the upper deck of the catamaran. We start chatting with other people and decide it’s just about the right time for the rum version of that delicious fruit punch (after all we’re in Jamaica, how can we pass up the delicious rum when no one is driving or diving). My husband opts for a cold Red Stripe instead and leans back to work on his tan. Learning Jamaican dance moves We hear music and a lot of laughter below and realize the trampoline is empty. I decide to leave my husband happily tanning and I follow the music only to discover a full-blown dance class, as the crew is teaching everyone the latest Jamaican dancehall dance moves. Although I feel a little self-conscious when I join in, that quickly fades away as everyone tries their best to match the expertise of the crew. Over on the right, two little girls have their own crew member showing them what to do and they catch on quickly, delighted grins lighting up their faces. I manage to muddle through and I’m pretty sure my sister is going to show these videos to everyone once we get back home for an evening full of a similar level of laughter at my expense. In that moment though, I don’t care. I feel the salt from the sea drying on my skin, my hair is a tousled mess and I’m dancing with my children in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. This, I think, is what happiness is.

First Sunreef 88 double deck catamaran launched

The first hull in the Sunreef 88 range of double deck sailing catamarans has been launched in Gdansk for a European owner, the Polish yard has announced.

This fully personalised multihull superyacht measures 26.82 metres LOA and was styled inside and out by the in-house team at  Sunreef Yachts .

In a statement, the Polish yard added that the design of the Sunreef 88 is “a great display of the shipyard’s non-conformist attitude and a genuine example of an avant-garde sailing catamaran concept”.

Captain Ian Sellers added: "She is a beautifully crafted, fully customised transoceanic catamaran, with superb quality and finish."

The design brief was focussed on three key themes: luxury, performance and privacy. To this end, the Sunreef 88 features more than 300 square metres of living space — an impressive figure for a yacht of this size, proving that bigger isn't always better .

This two-deck sailing yacht will feature an extensive flybridge with a central helm station and plenty of al fresco dining and relaxation spaces. Back aft, the cockpit features a central dining table with seating space for ten guests as well as a second sunbed, making good use of the Sunreef 88's 11.2 metre beam.

The in-house design includes sporty and dynamic exterior lines, as well as a fully customised interior layout. Key features include a mezzanine level in the saloon and a main-deck owner's cabin , which boasts superb views out to sea through panoramic windows.

Auxiliary power comes from a pair of 425hp engines drawing on a total fuel capacity of 8,000 litres, while her total sailplan is in excess of 345 square metres.

Sunreef added that the designers drew inspiration for this single-masted sailing yacht from the 35 metre flagship yacht Che , which was launched in 2010. The Sunreef 88 is the sixth superyacht from the Polish yard, which has also created the Sunreef 102 yacht Ipharra .

Savor Bonaire's breathtaking seascapes from the Sea Breeze double-decker power catamaran .

You'll stop at the famous pink salt flats and white mountains of salt. Your guide will explain the salt production process.

Offshore from the historical white slave huts, learn some Caribbean facts and discover why these centuries-old huts are built next to the sea.

The catamaran approaches the uninhabited island of Klein Bonaire by way of the famous Bonaire Marine Park . Its protected reef makes it a divers' paradise. From up close, you will see Bonaire's most attractive white-sand beach. Its name, of course, is No-Name Beach.

Follow the coastline for exceptional panoramic views, and don't forget to look down into the crystal-clear turquoise water. Oceanfront hotels and restaurants and beautiful Dutch Caribbean mansions line the way back to the port.

Maximum age is 70 years. Maximum height is 6'6". Maximum weight is 330 lbs. Guests who are more than five months pregnant or have a heart condition, asthma, or leg or chest injuries and/or recent surgery are not allowed to participate. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations.

Some of the best decking materials include:

  • Wood: Cedar, redwood, and tropical hardwoods offer a classic look but require regular maintenance.
  • Pressure-Treated Lumber: Affordable pine that resists rot and insects but may need staining.
  • Composite Decking: Low-maintenance blend of wood fibers and recycled plastic, available in various colors.
  • PVC Decking: Synthetic option resistant to stains, scratches, and fading, but can be pricey.
  • Aluminum Decking: Lightweight, durable, rust-resistant, suitable for water areas, but more expensive.
  • Vinyl Decking: Low-maintenance, moisture, and rot-resistant, but quality varies.

It’s better to build a patio when:

  • Privacy is a priority: Patio provides a sense of privacy, especially when enclosed.
  • Budget and low maintenance are the priority: Patios are generally more cost-effective to build and require less maintenance.
  • The ground is flat: For even ground, constructing a patio is easier and more straightforward.

It’s better to build a deck when:

  • Scenic views are desired: Decks offer better views.
  • You are fine with obtaining building permits and inspections: Decks typically require permits and inspections due to their structural impact on the home.
  • The ground is uneven: If your backyard has slopes or uneven terrain, a deck can provide a stable and level outdoor space.

"OSPREY"

Hunt Yachts Harrier 26-2016-OSPREY Wilmington-North Carolina-United StatesOSPREY 3234641

DETAILS ABOUT THIS BOAT

OSPREY is a fine example of a very hard-to-come-by 2016 Hunt Harrier 26 powered with the optional Yamaha 300hp outboard motor with only 215 hours. Lift-kept with custom sun covers, she shows beautifully with her Stars & Stripes blue hull, Oyster White boot stripe and black bottom. In 2018 the Yamaha outboard motor was painted to match the gelcoat and a faux teak transom was applied, nice custom touches done by the Hinckley Company. Properly maintained and serviced (full outboard motor service, with computer check and compression test, March 2022) make OSPREY a true ‘turn key’ offering. This is a great opportunity to acquire a nearly-new Hunt Harrier 26 in time for Spring!

Broker's comments.

Another rare opportunity to own one of the best tough sailing yachts in the world on short notice. This immaculate, hardly used 2014 Bestevaer 49ST is one of the favourite models built by KM Yachtbuilders. This beautiful, complete, modern Bestevaer 49ST " Mate " is clearly the little sister of the “Bestevaer II”, from the famous designer Gerard Dijkstra has built for his own use. The sailing characteristics are excellent and, also due to the presence of the pilot house, make this boat a very comfortable boat for long trips. Now ready to be admired and inspected.

Bestevaer 66, ANABEL

KM Yachtbuilders, Bestevaer 66 Built 2014 / €1,450,000, + VAT

Bestevaer 66, ANABEL 1 Main

Broker’s Comments

Bestevaer 66, ANABEL is an extraordinary world cruising yacht that was built for her current owner. She has taken him around the world in safety and with total reliability. He was closely involved with her build and she is very much a custom yacht. An enormous amount of care has gone into every aspect of her design and build, providing built in redundancy of her systems and safety for her crew and longevity for her. She has a powerful and easily handled sail plan and a secure cockpit. Her pilothouse is the perfect place for navigating and her pilot house windows were recently replaced with laminated glass which is super strong. She has a comfortable main saloon for living well and 3 good sleeping cabins which are comfortable and safe for her crew in a seaway. Her lifting keel (with 9000kg lead bulb) gives her enormous flexibility and ultimate stability. With her metal construction and robust design profile she is perfect for all oceans and would be secure and safe for high and low latitude sailing as well and for cruising in warmer waters.

ANABEL has been meticulously maintained by her owner with a series of works when laid up in New Zealand. Recently her underwater profile has been taken back and re-coated and she has new standing rigging.

Yachts with this level of capability and also those that are so well proven, rarely come to the market and ANABEL is very special. Everywhere you look there are design touches that are unique to her and very smart. She is a great alternative to commissioning new build if you have a very serious cruising programme in mind.

Owner’s Comments

ANABEL has many admirers around the world. In every port I have been to, people have come by to have a look and express amazement. Many old salts have been on board, and all of them liked the yacht (even the Coastguard).

The yacht is quite a machine, and the new owner will get in depth explanation of all the details. Since I am the only person to know the yacht in detail, I am willing to spend a week or more, to transfer all knowledge to the new owner.

Since I have very much built this yacht, and lived aboard for some years, I wish her to pass into good hands and for her to sail the oceans of the world for many years to come.

During her 7 years of ownership various equipment has been replaced, added or modified (partly in New Zealand).

  • New diesel pumps for better diesel transfer.
  • A hydro generator.
  • Windlass set up modified for smooth chain operation.
  • Anchor re-galvanized.
  • Improved boom with 4. reefs fitted.
  • Keel lift cylinder overhauled and 2. seal + scrapper added.
  • Keel guides replaced.
  • Various ropes and sheets replaced.

Recently Changed or Replaced Equipment

  • New anchor chain.
  • All old anti fouling sanded off to the base coat.
  • Yacht will go into the water with fresh Antifouling.
  • Rudder bearings replaced.
  • CPP prop shaft demounted, new seals, cutlass bearing, greased.
  • New pilot house windows from laminated glass.
  • Re-caulking of the teak in cockpit.
  • New upholstery in the salon.
  • 500m new rope as needed.
  • Paint repairs.
  • Toilet rebuild.
  • New standing rigging.

BESTEVAER SAILBOAT MODELS

Bestevaer sailing yachts are simply stunning to behold. Their balanced sheer and fine entry are accentuated by a plumb bow and pilothouse, giving a sense of power and comfort. Attention to details during build and the consideration of every design element combine to create the best aluminum sailing yachts in the world. Not only can every Bestevaer carry her owners as safely in cold climates as the tropics, they are also a joy to sail in every condition.

BESTEVAER 45 S/Y

An aluminum sailboat that can be sailed anywhere short-handed. A pilothouse sailboat designed by Gerard Dykstra and crafted by KM Yachtbuilders without compromise.

BESTEVAER 49 S/Y

The 49 is the perfect fit between the 45 and the 53. She is a very capable world cruising sailboat that can be customized to suit her owner’s needs.

BESTEVAER 53 S/Y

The 53 is perhaps best described by owner and designer Gerard Dykstra; “Designing any boat is a balancing act between many desirable characteristics and inevitably the end-product is a compromise, never perfect in all aspects. However, the Bestevaer comes close to my ideal. The past voyages proved this right.”

Opening yourself up to the world’s extremities and the unknown is easier when you’re at ease. That’s why comfort is a key element. Even the most rugged off-grid adventurer sailboats from Bestevaer offer smooth sailing and comfortable interiors.

BESTEVAER DESIGN

No frills, aluminum, rugged pilothouse vessels designed for adventuring. Designed by world-renowned sailor and naval architect Gerard Dykstra from Dykstra Naval Architects, the Bestevaer family combines high performance with gorgeous functionalist design. No wonder Bestevaer has become the boat of choice for sailing fanatics, explorers, scientists, and adventurers of all kinds.

Aluminum From A to Z

Bestevaer sailboats are built with the highest grade aluminum available. Hull, pilothouse, superstructure as well as interior elements are built with hand shaped aluminum by some of the best craftspeople on the planet. Continuous welds, additional plating, and no FRP are hallmarks of the Bestevaers.

Fully Ballasted Keels

Flexibility in build choices without sacrificing strength is another Bestevaer trademark. Keel choices include a fixed keel or a centerboard keel for serious shoal cruising. Both have nearly a 40 percent ballast ratio, ensuring excellent sailing qualities.

The benefits of a pilothouse are well known, but Bestevaers provide unrivaled security and comfort. These insulated aluminum houses have excellent visibility, keep owners dry underway, and make excellent living spaces while on the hook.

The new Bestevaer 36 from renowned naval architect Gerard Dijkstra is the smallest ever boat in the history if the Besteaver brand

bestevaer sailing yachts for sale

Product Overview

In a world in which yachts are constantly becoming larger, this Dutch brand is bucking the trend, with the smallest-ever model in its 20-year history. It’s intended to offer performance along with shoal draught and the ability to safely dry out on a beach.

These rugged aluminium pilothouse cruisers have always reflected what former professional skipper and renowned naval architect Gerard Dijkstra wants in a boat of his own: a safe, comfortable, and good-looking yacht for unrestricted, short-handed sailing. It has proved to be the perfect formula for a lifetime of ocean sailing, high latitude work and solo racing.

The Bestevaer 36 follows in a similar spirit, but is also intended as a boat in which Dijkstra can spend extended periods in the shallow waters, lakes and coastlines close to home that he has not previously had time to explore in detail.

“The Bestevaer 36 is a high-performance little yacht. It’s a very easy boat to sail and versatile as well,” he says. “It will easily take you around the world but is also ideal for cruising the local wetlands.”

This vessel therefore needed to be a sufficiently compact yacht to easily fit in small harbours and marinas, with the ability to dry out when sailing in the beautiful Wadden Sea nearby. Yet it still retains all the distinctive features of the brand’s larger yachts including aluminium construction, watertight fore and aft bulkheads, plumb bow, practical pilothouse and deep bulwarks.

Galley is to port, heads and diesel heater to starboard of the companionway. Light comes from overhead hatches and strong hull portlights

The two tonne ballasted centreboard provides a generous 2.4m draught when lowered. This is combined with a big rig to give good sailing performance on all points of sail, including close-hauled and light airs. Yet the board retracts fully into the canoe body, reducing draught to only 0.7m and creating a flat surface on which to dry out safely on the hull’s thick bottom plating.

Like the larger Bestevaers, this boat was conceived at the outset to offer crew plenty of protection. In addition to seats each side of the pilothouse, which has a 360˚ view, the coachroof extends over the cockpit, creating a very sheltered area. All lines are led aft for easy single-handed operation.

Generous beam helps to provide good form stability, as well as increasing accommodation volumes. The interior has a flexible semi-open plan layout, with three different style options.

The first boat, which will be the designer’s own, is currently in build and scheduled for completion this spring. This example is also being used as a case study for a transition towards more sustainable production processes at KM Yachtbuilders. For instance, 70% of the aluminium is recycled, as is the insulation, while environmentally friendly and largely recycled materials are used for the interior. It has a 15kW OceanVolt electric drive with sufficient battery capacity for four hours of autonomy. This is supplemented with regeneration and a large solar panel array on the pilothouse roof.

A couple of interesting options are offered for sail plans, including a 95% jib on a Hoyt boom, which makes for an enticing combination of very easy handling and excellent sail shape on all points of sail.

To help make up for loss of headsail area a square-top mainsail with 14% more area than the standard pinhead version can be specified.

The standard specification has a very high level of equipment, including the solar panels, electric propulsion package, antifouling wrap and a traditional style floor mounted with a Dickinson Alaska diesel heater.

Iconic 'little blue boat' that calls Montrose Bay home up for sale after family makes tough decision

For almost 50 years a little blue boat has been moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs by the side of a busy highway.

It is known affectionately by many Tasmanians as "the little blue boat", and has floated alone next to the Brooker Highway at Montrose Bay over the decades.

Sea Breeze, its official name, was built by Robin Attrill in his Montrose backyard in the early 1970s.

His son Colin Attrill said the boat was launched at Macquarie Wharf in 1976.

"It's been on the mooring in Montrose Bay ever since, and that's why it's such an iconic little blue boat," he said.

Tasmanians curious about 'little blue boat'

The boat is an object of fascination for Brooker Highway motorists and foreshore walkers due to it seemingly never moving.

Colin Attrill said it was "absolutely amazing" the number of people who would stop and talk to him about the boat when he was launching the dinghy to go and check on it.

"The number of people that talk to me that are walking past and go 'that boat has been there forever' and 'it was there when I was going to school or every day when I've been driving to work'," he said.

"Some people say they've never seen it move. Well it used to move all the time.

"Of late it's slowed up, we're all busy and dad has slowed up. We lost mum and once that happened it impacted on family activities."

Tough decision to sell

Its owner is now 91 and the boat has not been sailed for about 10 years.

Colin Attrill said the family had recently made the tough decision to try to sell the boat.

"Dad isn't well and he's gotten old, which we all do, and the boat's got old," he said.

"Anyone who knows about a timber boat knows that they need maintenance."

a picture of a scrap book with photos of a boat and cursive writing

Mr Attrill said the family used to put the boat on the slip at least once a year to clean and antifoul it, and do any repairs.

"But the past few years Dad has been unable to do anything, and the boat unfortunately has just sat on the mooring," he said.

He said the family decided it was time for the boat to have a new owner.

"Nobody is using it, it needs a new owner who will give it the time and get the enjoyment out of it that we had growing up," he said.

"It's a great boat, and there are many years left. Wooden boats just last."

'Next phase' for the boat

The Attrill family is full of passionate sailors and Robin's brother Peter represented Australia in sailing at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 — Tasmania's fifth Olympian and the first to represent the state in sailing.

When Robin finished building the 25-foot river cruiser, known by the family as The Breeze, it was used for trips away around Hobart.

"We used to have family trips down the channel, down to Cygnet, down to Dover, and all places in between fishing and weekends away," he said.

"We also used to go to events in Hobart like the Hobart Regatta, the Sandy Bay Regatta. We'd be down the river at any chance, or up the river. She made it to New Norfolk a couple of times.

"The boat was all over the place, wherever we could."

a black and white photo of a little boat in sail on a river

Mr Attrill said it would be a sad day when the boat left Montrose Bay after almost 50 years.

"We will see where it goes and where it ends up and what's the next phase for the boat," he said.

Over the years its owner has been keeping a watchful eye on it just a matter of metres away, across the Brooker Highway from his Montrose home of more than 70 years.

"He's always been there. He'd open the blinds in the morning in the kitchen and look out the window and there's the boat," son Colin said.

"It's always been a part of his life."

British design studio Vitruvius Yachts has revealed a new superyacht concept known as the Vitruvius Palm Beach. The 46-metre project is available for sale with Worth Avenue Yachts and has been tailored specifically for the North American market.

Several prominent shipyards are "currently bidding to bring this vision to life," according to the broker, with construction expected to begin next year.

The superyacht is designed with a low draft of two metres, making it best suited to shoal draft locations such as the Bahamas, Florida and The Chesapeake.

Accommodation is across five lower deck cabins, plus quarters for nine crew. The owner's cabin would be full-beam and features an office, dressing area, his and hers bathrooms and fold-down balcony.

While the interior designer is unconfirmed, preliminary renderings reveal a pared back, contemporary aesthetic. The main saloon benefits from full-height windows, a "convertible" lounging and dining area for 10 guests as well as a dedicated lounge starboard.

The main deck is fitted with a formal bar and second convertible seating area aft. Another major convivial space is the sundeck, which has a large sunbathing area, a bar, barbecue and a Jacuzzi.

Meanwhile, the beach club features a pool that can operate with freshwater or saltwater. Bulwarks open either side to form a larger lounging area, which is arranged with several sunpads.

The concept also includes a tender garage able to accommodate a six-metre and two jet skis, thanks to a Solas-compliant sliding beam crane and fold-up shell door for launching and loading.

Vitruvius Palm Beach would be powered by twin CAT 32 engines for a maximum speed of 15.7 knots and a cruising speed of 12 knots.

This reveal follows the delivery of Vitruvius Yachts' 65.7-metre Alchemy .

S heltered cockpit
