A few years back, I departed Port Angeles, Washington, on board a fine little Truant 33 named Chesapeake and pointed her bow north toward the wild British Columbia coastline. I was 17 years old, and by then I had perfected the art of avoiding school by pirating the family boat and leaving the country for a few weeks at a time. The fact that I was using a boat called a Truant 33 as a means to enable my truancy was no small irony, but I can thank Truant Marine for a lot more than choosing a tasteful name.

The Truant 33 was designed by the legendary William Garden as a small seaworthy sailing vessel for cruising the cold, turbulent waters of the Pacific Northwest year-round in safety and comfort. Rare on vessels this size, the Truant 33’s pilothouse offers welcome protection from the region’s famous “liquid sunshine.”

The Truant 33 was first built in 1977 on Saltspring Island in British Columbia, where Truant Marine produced 30 or so vessels before selling the molds to Saturna Yachts in 1981. Saturna then built the almost-identical Saturna 33 throughout the ’80s, and eventually sold the molds to Wiggers Yachts in Ontario. There are usually a few used vessels to be found on the market, especially in the Pacific Northwest, with a price tag ranging from $30,000 to $60,000.

The Truant packs many unique features into her modest 33 feet, most notably the incorporation of the pilothouse and a very roomy and usable layout down below for living aboard. For those who prefer a more traditional cabin top, the offshore version was built without a pilothouse.

There are various interpretations of the classic layout, but the most common one is with a quarter berth and nav station to starboard with the inside steering station just forward and a dinette to port, which folds down into a double berth. Moving forward, there is a step down to a small enclosed head and hanging locker to starboard and a galley to port that rivals that of many 40-foot vessels. In the bow is either a large V-berth with stowage under or two staggered crew bunks with one raised to make for even more stowage space below. There is standing headroom throughout the cabin, and space to sleep up to five people.

Abovedecks, the Truant 33 has a very secure cockpit, which is given further protection by the pilothouse. The cockpit is small — a nice feature in heavy seas, but it makes for a bit of a squeeze when accommodating guests — though the roomy cabin makes up for that space.

She has a very prominent bow and canoe stern, which, along with her pilothouse, make her stand out in every harbor she visits.

She also sails surprisingly well for such a heavy boat of this size, and in rough weather gives a feeling of security and seaworthiness. The 30-inch-wide side decks and high bulwarks make it easy and safe to move around deck.

Most Truant 33s were set up as sloops, but I have seen where some owners added an inner forestay and running backstays to convert to a cutter rig. Underneath the waterline, she sports a long fin keel with a rudder on a skeg.

In my sailing career, I have more memories made aboard the Truant 33 than on any other design. Along the way we encountered plenty of challenges, yet she took me there and back again safely every time. And she still does.

Truant by John Welsford

Sailing with stability and the most fun you can have without getting wet.

URL: http://jwboatdesigns.co.nz/plans/truant/

Description:

It took 36 hours to travel from home in Rotorua to the tiny coastal town of Brooklin, Maine (USA) where WoodenBoat magazine has its amazing office. I don’t sleep at all well on an aircraft and so was not in good shape by the time Publisher Carl Cramer dropped me off at my accommodation, I was completely on my own there as the summer visitors are rare that far north in January but was pleased for the peaceful spacious lodge after the horrors of being trapped in aircraft and transit lounges for that long. 3am though I awoke and could not sleep, my "clock" was telling me I should be up and about even though my body still felt awful, so there I was roaming around looking at the wonderful Spruce clad rocky shore and the sea gleaming like molten metal in the perfectly still moonlit night.

So I went for a swim !

The word "cold" now has a new meaning for me. I knew that it would be cool but the WoodenBoat crew now view New Zealanders with a mixture of awe and fear, and I, having swum in the waters of Eggemoggin Reach have designed a boat suitable for winter sailing in those waters.

Truant , designed for those who want to play hookey, is a very capable daysailer, with enough performance to be fun, small enough to go onto a garden trailer rather than a custom boat trailer, big enough to take a couple of less limber adults and their camping or picnic gear or a small mob of teenagers away for a small adventure. She is so designed that she will be comfortable to sail, dry in most weather, capable beyond almost anything else of her size and almost impossible to capsize. Her wide beam and smallish centreboard cause her to slide off sideways rather than tip out, her generous freeboard and wide decks help keep the water outside where it belongs and she has so much enclosed locker and air tank space inside that should the unimaginable happen there is enough buoyancy to float her crew completely clear of the water when fully swamped.

Built from Plywood and Marine Supplies sheet plywood and fastened with Sikaflex flexible adhesive/sealant (Thanks Gordon) the prototype is going together well, we’ve cut the transom down to take a small outboard so her owner can take her fishing, have today poured the lead into the centreboard and will be painting her outside tomorrow. Lake Rotomahana has really neat little coves, so tiny that a launch would not squeeze in, and Jan already has tried fitting our pile of camping gear in the big space under the foredeck so I’d better quit the computer and get on with the job!

Truant Triad (Turtle) 37

  • Add to quote

Requesting help from the Sailnet community, I have a Truant 37 offshore and understandably have a difficult time finding much about them. My father In Law bought it 20 years ago. He told me that there were 36 total 37 footers made, of which only 8 were offshore models. I know Mike Betts built them back in the 80's and 90's up in the Gulf Islands. His son Jim Betts is a Sailnet member with that handle jimmyb112. I've found about half of them through various sales listings. The best information I have is from the Yacht Designs book by Bill Garden. I would love to learn more about them and possibly hear from some of the other owners. Thanks

Hello San Juan Truant. I purchased a 1989 Truant Triad 4 years ago in Gibsons, BC. The vessel was previously named "24 Carat". We renamed her "Sunday Mooring". I am not sure if she is one of the 8 offshore vessels but a previous owner used to take her to Mexico quite regularly. We are slowly (very slowly) trying to upgrade her with new electronics, sails etc. Really like the design of the boat and hope we can keep her in good shape to outlast us! I have a copy of the 2-4 pages of schematics but not a whole lot more. Please let me know what the features of a "off shore model" are and I can tell you if I have one of them. This is my first post ever to Sailnet so I am not sure how to post a photo of the boat (tried but no luck) Cheers Mark

Oh, the photo did upload! Please let me know if this is the offshore model or not. Cheers Mark

Mark, Thanks for the reply. You're the first person to respond to my inquiries! I love the picture by the way. First of all, thanks for the update on 24 Carat. I remember seeing pictures of it on the interwebs and I always liked the canvas work on it. I am in the process of having a bimini added to mine as well as a full enclosure. We're replacing the dodger and sail cover as it's pushing 20 years old. (The sail cover didn't look bad but not good when compared to all the other new canvas.) About the offshore part. My late father-in-law got to meet Bill Garden, the designer of our boat, while cruising up in the gulf islands a while back. I believe Bill told him that there were 36 of the 37' made, of which only 8 were like ours. So yes, you would have one of the rare "offshore" models meaning we don't have the "pilothouse" model with helm inside. My father-in-law was an avid sailor and loved how the Triads sailed. He had no use for boating year round. If you have to start the motor, you have failed....would have been his mantra as he only used it during the summer. My wife and I are changing the boat to match our desire to use it all year with our 2 young children. Last summer I finally ran into another 37 offshore. I met a neat couple that actually found a 37 offshore sitting in a barn in Sooke and had never been launched! The interior had been finished back in the mid 80's but there was no mast or rigging. It was a 35 year old boat with no hours on it! Anyway, they motored it here to Anacortes to be rigged. I took A LOT of pictures of it and even gave them a tour of my boat. They were very appreciative as it gave them some ideas. They were able to talk to the old owners of Truant Marine and they told them there were 18 of our offshore models made so now I don't know what to believe. Well anyway, I've seen pictures of Sassona, Salient, Selene I, 24 Carat, and their new boat (I don't remember the name). That's not a lot but it potentially represents 3/4 of the 8 I was told if you include my Truant. Anyway, here are some pictures of Madrisa, our 1983 Truant offshore 37. I've also attached some pictures of Bill Garden's book that shows the differences between the offshore and pilothouse model. Thanks, Jason

Hi Jason Sorry for the long delayed response. Work has taken over my life the last 2 months and I have been ignoring all things nautical! I hope you are correct that there are only 8 offshore and not 18. Makes me feel a bit more exclusive with Sunday Mooring! Anyway, we finally hauled her out for the annual bottom job as well as some other mechanical repairs (rebuilt gearbox) and some touch up items here and there. Still lots to do but we will postpone the unnecessary items until October. The "to do" list never seems to get smaller Hoping to get out quite frequently this spring/summer to the Gulf islands and up to Desolation and Jervis Inlet a few times. Hope to see you and Madrisa out there! Cheers Mark

Hi Mark, How is the boating going this summer? Have you managed to get out and spend some time on your Truant? We've gotten out into the San Juans some this summer but haven't had the time to cross the border. Curious if you've come across any other Truant folks this summer. Jason

Hello Robland Bluenoser17 here. Just saw your recent post from 4 weeks ago seeking to find other Truant Triad owners Still sailing (and upgrading/fixing) Sunday Mooring. Looking to venture further than the Gulf Islands later this summer/fall. Cheers Mark

Hi Robland, I found some time to catch up on sailnet. Always nice to hear from other Truant owners. Jason

Robland/Jason Been awhile but just finished some extensive hull repairs on Sunday Morning and was just curious how other Truant owners are doing lately with their boats. Planning (covid permitting) to get out a fair amount this spring summer (San Juans, Gulf Islands, Desolation, Broughtons etc.). In the middle of some repairs/maintenance as well and just thinking about bouncing off a few ideas considerations. Hopefully you are still out there (been 3 years). Cheers Mark

Oh man, I just came across this thread Mark. I'm pretty sure I hadn't responded to it. It looks like you've been following Madrisa's blog. How did last summer go for you? Would love to catch up on hull repairs and anything else. Jason

As I wanted to frequently carry overnite camping gear in the boat, I installed 2” drainpipe tubes in the centre compartments to carry excess water from the forward area to the rear footwell. This allows the 2x large compartments to remain dry and watertight for storage. More 2” drain pipes were installed in the transom buoyancy compartment to allow the same for that area. These tubes terminate in exterior screw bungs fitted through the transom. The idea works superbly!

I also drilled holes at seat level in each of the bulkhead panels to allow water to drain to the rear. Screw bungs go through the transom at rear seat level to allow exit of draining water. These are absolutely necessary when washing out the boat after fishing, or after spirited sailing, or after rain.

To access these extra storage areas I made hinged wooden hatch lids midships, retained with shockcord and u cleats, with a shop-bought plastic rectangular hatch at the stern. The rear compartment is so easy for easy items like sponge, camera, cellphone, tools, etc, which are now all at hand whilst out in the boat. ( see photo 3 ) ANCHORWELL

It seemed so much easier to create a permanent space (with its own external drain outlet), to put the anchor, chain and rope. The anchorwell keeps the boats interior dry, clean and uncluttered. The wet boatshoes and other small bits also go in there too.

In fishing mode we fit curved wooden seats to the midships hatches. These are attached with 15mm diameter x 2” stainless steel bolts and wing nuts. They take about 90 seconds to install, swivel 360 degrees on nylon bases – but usually face to the stern. They are so much more comfortable on the back, when out for a few hours just sitting with a fishing rod, and only 90 seconds to remove and bung the holes in hatches. ( see the seat mounting holes in photo 3 )

Johns plans use ply doublers under the leading edges of the seat panels, overhanging the footwell area by 25-50 mm all round. I dispensed with these and cut the horizontal panels flush with the vertical faces and gained up to 100mm of extra legroom in that area. Really handy for two adults out for a fish or a sail. The edges are ‘softened’ with a ½ round timber moulding of only 10mm (glued and nailed) at the junction of the two planes of those panels.

RUBBING STRIPS

I got some 3” x 1” Kwila hardwood decking timber ripped lengthwise on both axis to give me 1 ½“ x ½” strips to screw onto the gunwales for rubbing strips. It’s as hard as hell, takes the knocks, needs no coatings and is easy to replace if it ever gets really damaged. It also adds a nice ‘natural’ finish to the boats exterior. ( see photo 2 )

For more comfort whilst sailing, made wider that normal coamings. These are now approx 6” wide to allow extra back support. They also allow a number of smaller items to be tucked up underneath them out of the sun etc. ( see photo 1 - photo 3 )

RUDDER LIFTERS

Two ropes attached to the forward and aft edges of the rudder allow it to lift and lower. A small cleat on the tiller holds either of the ropes - to keep the rudder in position. It works well.

ROD HOLDERS

These perform more than just the obvious function. When trailering the boat I put hardwood blocks with a 1½ ” diameter dowel underneath, in them. These stop the ratcheted cargo straps tying boat down to trailer to not damage the comings or paint. A different pair of blocks also hold cam cleats to retain the jib sheets when sailing.

Other than that, the rod holders are strategically located near the wooden seats for instant access to reel in those big fish. A single rod holder is also located at the rear of the footwell, for trolling in freshwater and it also houses the boom support when the sail is lowered, but not removed. ( see photo 6 )

CENTREBOARD

Instead of having exposed lead ballast in the board, I built up my unit with 2x layers of 9mm and one centre layer of 12mm ply. I cut a large hole in the lower portion of the centre layer and cast the lead into that – retaining it with pins and screws all around the edges of the hole. The lead was levelled and smoothed, then the three layers of the centreboard were glued and clamped together. An altogether nicer finish, even if it isn’t seen. OUTBOARD BRACKET

I got sick of shifting the outboard from centre of the stern to stowing it up front in the boat when sailing. I would not dare go on the water without it for any distance! But I wanted to keep to the rather traditional natural look. So I bought an old aluminium outboard bracket off the internet, sanded the oxidisation off it- back to bare metal, and glued 3mm ply to the exterior. I think it looks great and is in keeping with the look.

FLOOR PANELS

I made two ply panels for the forward footwell area. These are held in place with 2 stainless screws each, but are easily removable. The ‘dress’ up that area which originally shows the stringers and underpanel of the boat. ( see photo 3 )

After diverting from the traditional balanced lugsail John recommends (only because of finances mind you), originally fitted a BERMUDAN rig with 20 foot mast from a 13 foot father & son racing dinghy. Whilst it had phenomenal performance to windward, it was a real handful in a blow for this novice sailor. In fact I felt a little scared by the power of the thing sometimes! I got hold of a 2 piece 14 foot mast and sail and cut that sail down to a gaff rig. A wooden handle swivel mop and a few brass eyelets gave me the gaff and lashing points.

This ‘new’ sail is better downwind, more manageable in gusty conditions and overall ‘softer’ somehow. Whilst the gaff rig is not as good to windward, I am quite willing to sacrifice that for a nicer, safer feel. Who knows I may actually revert to JW’s advice and fit a lugsail when finances are better.

I must confess I am no boating expert. I do however feel I have enhanced John Welsfords design for Truant – at least for my use of it. I hope these simple ideas give rise to thoughts and modifications others may wish for their boats – whatever the design.

GRAHAME HARRIS.

Saturna 33 is a 33 ′ 0 ″ / 10.1 m monohull sailboat designed by William Garden and built by Wiggers Custom Yachts Ltd. starting in 1981.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Garden design #611. Originally the TRUANT 33 built by Truant Marine, BC, CA. (1977) The tooling was acquired by Saturna Yachts of Saanichton, BC.(1981?) For the SATURNA 33 the deck and coach roof were re-designed (by W. Garden) The standard ‘Offshore’ version is shown here. A Pilothouse version was also available. Boats were also sold in ‘kit’ form. The molds were later acquired by Wiggers Custom Yachts where a few more were built. It is thought that less than 50 boats were completed to this basic design. Thanks to Saturna owner, Bob Coulson, for providing additional information.
