Bertram Yachts 61: Boat Review

Paying homage to the company’s original 54-footer, Bertram Yachts has combined the latest in boatbuilding techniques and innovations with modern interiors that are not only bright and sophisticated but live-in comfortable. Along with a handful of industry executives and potential buyers, I was privy to see the new Bertram 61 — the model that will redefine the Bertram brand — in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Bertram Yachts has taken its share of punches over the past 60 years, but the brand has remained amazingly resilient, embracing what the company holds most dear: its iconic name. Chief executive officer Peter Truslow has been charged with the company’s rebirth by reverencing the models that got them where they are today. Part of that plan involved moving to a waterfront shipyard facility in Tampa, Florida, in 2016.

“I am incredibly proud of our class-leading 61 as well as the team that builds these boats,” says Truslow. “I feel the experience we have at our facility and service center in Tampa are unmatched in our industry, and our work with the Michael Peters design team has formed a great foundation for our long-term product growth.”

Hull and Superstructure

Right from the start, you can’t help but notice the nods to the past: the fore-to-aft navy Bertram stripe, the stepped sheer and that classic Bertram logo. And for a brief moment, you are catapulted back to the past, reliving the good times at Walker’s Cay.

As you enter the cockpit, you find very little that screams ‘same old Bertram.’ There is a luster, an inescapable new look that is evident in the styling and construction. Using infused vinylester composites reinforced with Kevlar in the keel and strakes, the 61 is designed with durability in mind. Beefy and solid, this hull was built to withstand whatever the ocean can throw at it — a cornerstone of the Bertram reputation.

The new boat’s deck and house incorporate a composite material made of a polymer matrix reinforced with fiberglass for brute mechanical strength, unsurpassed corrosion resistance and insulation qualities.

Cockpit and Bridge

Hull No. 1 is outfitted with a large, self-draining teak cockpit sole, containing two removable fish boxes with macerator pumps. The teak deck carries itself up onto the mezzanine, where a four-person buckskin ultra-leather couch is oriented to port. The mezzanine steps contain three adjustable refrigeration compartments with lift-and-lock-style latches for easy opening, and under the covering board, in-gunwale storage keeps cleaning supplies, brush handles or gaffs out of sight but within easy reach on both sides.

Ascending to the bridge, a center-console helm design is matched with bench seating all around, and a large two person chaise in front of the helm offers a perfect spot for stretching out, reading or napping while underway.

The PipeWelders Marine hardtop provides plenty of shade and is outfitted with molded-in LED overhead lighting as well as a pod to accept electronic displays, such as autopilot, electronic compass and VHF radios.

The helm station is clean and tightknit. Two large Garmin multifunction displays flank the Caterpillar engine display and OctoPlex ship control monitor, allowing the captain to manage virtually every system on the boat without leaving the helm.

A stainless steering wheel takes center stage on the teak helm pod, while the Palm Beach-style single lever controls with bow thruster buttons make maneuvering in tight quarters a no-brainer. On either side of the pod, a set of lidded boxes houses the electronics needed to get you from point A to point B safely, day or night.

The first things you notice as you enter the salon are the windows. The near-military-grade lightly tinted glass wraps the space, drenching the salon in 360 degrees of natural light, something I don’t remember seeing on convertible boats since Rybovich, Merritt and, yes, Bertram, did away with their clear windshields many years ago — another modernized nod to the past.

The layout is open, and the entire perimeter of the salon contains cabinet storage that runs along the overhead. Satin teak veneers are oriented on the horizontal as opposed to the conventional vertical to accentuate the open feel. Two Release Marine ergonomic bar stools belly up to the galley counter and provide not only a place to eat, but also additional seating in the salon.

The soft white leather couch set to port contains storage underneath, and a cabinet console runs the starboard length of the salon, housing a pop-up TV and multiple storage cabinets. The U-shaped galley features Silestone countertops, a deep stainless-steel sink, a dishwasher, a cooktop and an oven.Plush white carpeting is present in the main area of the salon and in the staterooms, while wide-plank natural white ash matte flooring in the galley runs down the companionway and into the heads.

Down the stairs and to port, you enter the master suite, greeted by a large head with shower and substantial vanity, perched on which is a beautiful white bowl sink.Beyond the suite entryway lies a full-beam master stateroom — oriented port-to-starboard — with the bed on the port side, and a pop-up TV and full-length closets to starboard. Two optional hullside windows allow the natural light to funnel in below, while Dometic’s 96,000 Btu chilled-water air-conditioning system keeps the interior very cool.

Moving forward, there is a side-by-side twin stateroom with private access to the day head, and all the way forward is a large VIP berth with a full-size bed, en suite head and plenty of storage.

Engine Package and Performance

The Bertram 61 is equipped with twin Caterpillar C32 ACERTs, providing a whopping 1,900 hp each to the vessel. This gives her a cruising speed of almost 36 knots at 80 percent load — burning 160 gallons per hour at 2,000 rpm. Twin Disc gears make for fully automatic shifting when chasing down speedy blue marlin that make you spin on a dime.

Seakeeper gyrostabilizers are now standard in all Bertram models, and the 61 is equipped with an SK16, positioned at the aft bulkhead of the engine room. Twin Onan 21.5 kW gensets provide ample power to all the ship’s systems.

The big Cats pop her up on plane with little effort and are powerful enough to back around as fast as necessary to get that all-important tournament release.She is responsive, steers true and her auto-controlled Humphree trim tab system stations the boat perfectly in that annoying side-to or on-your-quarter sea. She is quiet inside and out, thanks in part to the sound-absorption system installed in the engine room.

There is no doubt the entire Bertram design team has put its blood, sweat and tears into this model, reinventing itself to stay on top of current trends and remain a relevant player in a highly competitive industry. “When you’re using the best materials, hardware, machinery and electronics, it’s easy to build a great boat. But when your number-one design criteria is that it has to be Bertram, you know it is going to be that much greater,” says Bertram’s vice president of sales, Tommy Thompson.

There has always been a cult following for Bertrams, and I believe this group will be especially happy to see this high-quality, American-made vessel coming out of Tampa. As for other potential owners, you just have to see it to believe it. The Bertram legacy continues.

Bertram Debuts 61 Convertible

After Gruppo Gavio purchased Bertram in 2015, most who followed the iconic fishing-boat brand sensed that good things were coming. The introduction of the classically inspired Bertram 35 at the 2016 Newport International Boat Show let the world know that the new Bertram was serious about its heritage, but the question remained: Would the builder attempt to reclaim its place among the big boys of the convertible world with a tournament-ready battlewagon?

The answer lies in the Bertram 61, one of the top fishing yachts on the market .

The 61 has lines that are unapologetically masculine and blocky in a good way—think Mercedes G-Wagon. When I stepped aboard her business end, the cockpit features showed that her bite lives up to the styling’s bark. This particular 61 had a Pompanette fighting chair situated in the center of 188 square feet of fish-fighting space. A 100-gallon in-transom livewell was accompanied by twin in-sole fish boxes as well as rod stowage to port and starboard. A tuna door to starboard would allow for a fish’s easy egress from the salt, and the whole scene could be enjoyed from mezzanine seating with a refrigerated drink box under a step leading to the salon.

By far the most striking feature in this Bertram 61’s salon was the forward “window,” which is actually the yacht’s tinted visor, made of military-spec ballistic glass. This option is three-eighths of an inch thick and so strong that, according to Bertram, you could hit it with a hammer without causing damage. (I didn’t get a chance try that though.) Yet, the visor is see-through from inside, a rarity on sport-fish boats today, and a quality that makes for a well-lit salon, especially in the galley forward, with its dual, custom-made barstools.

Another feature rarely seen on a production convertible this size is down below on the accommodations level. The Bertram 61 has a full-beam amidships master, more akin to what might be found on a motoryacht than a fishing boat. Windows to port and starboard provide generous amounts of light, and twin 4-foot-tall, cedar-lined lockers offer enough stowage for longer voyages. Tunes are pumped into the master through a Sonos system that plays separately in other areas of the vessel.

Additional en suite staterooms include a queen-berth VIP forward and a starboard stateroom with twin berths.

The Bertram 61’s engine room is accessed through a door in the mezzanine. The boat I got aboard had twin 21.5-kW Cummins Onan generators and four Parker Racor fuel filters that were easy to reach. There was also a standard Seakeeper 16 gyrostabilizer that pinned the yacht in place in the choppy 3- and 4-footers out on the water.

Not only did the Bertram 61 come to play, but she also showed up with style and features that other boats in her class simply do not have. She sure seems like a major step on Bertram’s fast track back to tournament prominence.

Amadeus Description

Built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard, and having undergone a total refit in 2018, S/Y Amadeus was designed to please the most demanding of yachtsmen. Built for smooth sailing, this elegant cutter rigged sloop has a sleek hull design, comfortably reaching top speeds of 12 knots and ensuring excellent sailing performance. S/Y Amadeus has just undergone this past winter (2018) a major refit such as total repaint top to bottom, new rigging (BSI Denmark), Novourania with new Evinrude 75hp outboard, Splash pool, new Bimini/Sprayhood/Awnings, new exterior fabrics and many other enhancements. In 2016 new “North Sails” were placed onboard. The yacht is maintained in excellent condition with a five-star crew year round. Her generous uncluttered teak deck offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables seating upto 12 guests and is a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. Her forward area includes a splash pool and sun bathing area which can also be shaded with a removable awning. From the cockpit, a stairway leads to the light-filled spacious saloon offering ample seating, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a drink from the bar, and offers a formal dining area. This area also includes a LCD TV, entertainment center, ipod dock station, playstation, and is ideal for indoor activities. She can accommodate 10-12 guests in one full width master stateroom, two double bedded cabins each having one extra single bed and two twin bedded cabins which can be easily converted to double beds (upon request), thus, making her the only 5 double bedded sailboat in the Greek market. She also has a nice selection of toys which include water ski (adult and children), tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod and snorkeling gear.

CAPTAIN - Harry Fotopoulos Captain Harry is a graduate of the Merchant Marine Academy and holds a Captain Class A’ Diploma. He also holds a Canadian Commercial Pilot license class B, sailing and speedboat license. He has over 15 years of experience onboard many types of Charter Yachts. He holds Certificates in GMDSS, Fire Fighting & First Aid, Personal Safety, Life Saving, and Ship Security. He has a great knowledge of the Greek islands and will navigate guests to remarkable destinations. During his one season on board he showed great leadership skills and received positive feedback from all guests. He is calm yet very outgoing and speaks very good English. DECKHAND - Konstantinos Santas CHIEF STEWARDESS - Mirella Davint Mirella has 8+ years of experience as a stewardess onboard charter and private yachts. She has a very pleasant personality and she aims to accommodate her guests to the fullest. Comments received from previous guests are memorable. This will be Mirella’s eighth season onboard. Mirella speaks English and she is 38 years old. ENGINEER - Stelios Mandos Stelios holds an Engineer Class B’ Diploma from the Greek Merchant Marine Academy as well as a Sailor’s License. He has over 15 years of experience onboard Ocean-Going Vessels and Charter Yachts. His hobbies include spearfishing and sailing. He speaks good English. Stelios is 45 years old, married with two children. CHEF - Thanasis Kiritsis Thanasis is 39 years old and has worked as a chef for more than 20 years in numerous hotels restaurants, yachts and resorts including owning his own pastry shop / bakery for 5 years. Thanasis looks forward to welcoming his guests on board and introducing them to his culinary world. He speaks good English and Greek. He is a young chef full of energy, skills and passion towards his job. We are confident that he will serve his guests unforgettable flavors. ASSISTANT STEWARDESS - Anastasia Yurash Anastasia is 31 years old and has been in the yachting industry since 2021. Her working experience includes 7 years as a housekeeper and assistant stewardess. Anastasia speaks very good English. One of Anastasia’s strongest attributes is her appetite for work. She is also very sociable, welcoming and looks forward to having guests on board S/Y Amadeus. Her hobbies include Latin dancing, snowboard and yoga.

A General Description of Sailing Yacht AMADEUS

AMADEUS was previously registered as project/yacht name Amadeus 1er. This 33 metre (109 ft) luxury yacht was built by Dynamique Yachts in 1991. Sailing Yacht AMADEUS is a well proportioned superyacht. The yacht is a modern sloop with a cutter rig. The naval architecture office whom authored the design work on this ship was Philippe Briand. Luxury yacht AMADEUS is a quality yacht that is able to accommodate as many as 12 guests on board and has a total of 5 crew members.

Sailing yacht AMADEUS was built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard .The yacht features superb sailing characteristics which are complimented by her spacious interior and abundant deck space. Sailing sloop AMADEUS can accommodate 10 passengers in five cabins. With one large master stateroom and four additional cabins which are all air conditioned and have en suite bathrooms. She also has two separate salons and a full dining room. The aft deck is fully covered with seating. The fore deck has an unique pool on deck and swimming in the sea is made accessible by a large swim aft platform.

The Construction & Naval Architecture relating to Luxury Yacht AMADEUS

Philippe Briand was the naval architect firm involved in the formal nautical design work for AMADEUS. Also the company Philippe Briand skillfully collaborated on this undertaking. In 1991 she was actually launched to triumph in Marans and following sea trials and final completion was afterwards passed on to the yacht owner. Dynamique Yachts completed their new build sailing yacht in France. A reasonable proportion is brought about with a maximum beam (width) of 7.5 metres / 24.6 feet. With a 3.6m (11.8ft) draught (maximum depth) she is reasonably deep. The material composite was used in the building of the hull of the sailing yacht. Her superstructure above deck is built with the use of composite. Over the deck of AMADEUS she is 32.7 (107.3 ft) in length. In 2004 extra refitting and modernisation was also finished.

Engines & Speed For S/Y AMADEUS:

She is driven by twin screw propellers. The main engine of the ship gives 375 horse power (or 276 kilowatts). She is equiped with 2 engines. The combined thrust for the boat is therefore 750 HP / 552 KW.

Bestowing bedding for a maximum of 12 yacht guests sleeping aboard, the AMADEUS accommodates them in style. Normally the vessel requires approximately 5 professional crewmembers to run.

Her master cabin features a walk around king bed, desk/vanity, and en-suite bathroom. Additionally, there are two guest cabins each with a queen bed convertible to two twins, and two guest cabins each with a queen bed and twin bed. Each guest cabin has an en-suite.

Her main salon has a spacious, contoured conversational area, along with a large, flatscreen T.V. The aft deck features al fresco dining with Bimini top. Up on deck there are sun pads and a splash pool for you and your guests to enjoy.

Watersports offered include a 15 foot tender with 75hp engine, water skis for adults and children, tube, wakeboard, kayak, fishing gear, snorkeling gear, and rendezvous diving.

Sailing yacht AMADEUS is a stunning 110 ft yacht available for charter in Greece. With a clean, spacious teak deck and a unique outdoor saloon that can seat up to 12 guests across two tables, it’s the perfect place for outdoor dining and entertainment. The deck saloon can also be enclosed with a special canopy and roll-up windows, making it suitable for use in all weather conditions. At the front of the boat, there’s a splash pool and sunbathing area with a removable awning for shade.

Inside the boat, a staircase from the cockpit leads to a well-lit and roomy saloon area with plenty of seating, including a formal dining area, bar, LCD TV, entertainment center, iPod dock station, and Playstation. Sailing Yacht AMADEUS can accommodate 10-12 guests in five large cabins, including a full-width master stateroom and two double cabins, each with an extra single bed. The two twin cabins can also be converted to doubles upon request, making her the only sailboat on the Greek market with five double beds.

To add to the fun, sailing yacht AMADEUS also comes with a range of water toys, including adult and children’s water skis, tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod, and snorkeling gear. She was built by Dynamique Yachts in 1996 and underwent a refit in 2014/2018.

Accomodation is offered for 10 -12 guests in 5 spacious cabins: Master cabin forward features a double bed, vanity unit and generous storage facilities, as well as audio/visual entertainment. The en-suite includess a large bath tub, shower and separate WC. Two identical double cabins with additional single bunks situated forward. Two identical double cabins situated aft which can be convertible to twins. (Total 5 double beds) All cabins with en suite facilities and audio/visual entertainment.

A professional crew of 5-6 members are accommodated in separate quarters.

Charter the AMADEUS

AMADEUS is a 110-foot sailing yacht that can accommodate ten to twelve passengers in five staterooms as follows: a spacious Owner’s stateroom with a double bed, a vanity and an entertainment unit including TV, DVD and music system; two cabins with a double bed and an additional single bed; two cabins with two twin beds each. All staterooms have en suite bathrooms, a TV, DVD and CD player. There are two separate salons onboard as well as a full dining room. The aft deck is fully covered and has seating for all guests to dine in the open air. Forward of the cockpit is a lovely cushioned area for sunning and an unusual pool is found in the fore of the yacht. Swimming in the sea is made accessible by the large swim aft platform.
