MSC Gratuities (Tips/Service Charge): Full Guide to Cost & How They Work

Sailing MSC and wondering about the service charges — also known as gratuities — that you will see? Almost no matter which cruise line you sail, these daily charges are a part of life.

And the cost can be significant. In general, cruise lines charge between $14-$16 per person, per day for the gratuity charges. That can add up to hundreds of dollars for a couple on a weeklong cruise.

Of course, with those sorts of dollar amounts, you might have some questions about what this money is for, where it goes, and how the entire process works.

In This Article...

What are service charges (gratuities)?

Daily gratuity charges come in a lot of different names. Sometimes they are called tips. Some lines call them crew appreciation. MSC called them service charges.

These all mean the same thing — a charge per person, per day that is to provide compensation to the passenger-facing crew like your room steward and the dining staff.

In the past (decades ago), the crew relied on the generosity of passengers to provide a tip. Today, the process is automated to where nearly everyone on the ship is charged the same rate.

How much are service charges on MSC?

MSC has several different gratuity rates that depend where the cruise occurs. For those sailing in The Bahamas/Caribbean, South America, or Asia , you’ll see the following rates:

  • Adults (>12 and up): $14.50 per night
  • Children (2-12): $7.25 per night
  • No service charges for kids under 2 years old

For those sailing in the Mediterranean, Europe, Middle East or Southern Caribbean , the rates are slightly different and priced in euros:

  • Adults (>12 and up): 12 euros per night
  • Children (2-12): 6 euros per night

So say that you’re a couple taking a 7-day cruise. In this case, you’ll each pay $14.50 per night, for a total of $203 over the course of the trip.

How do I pay the MSC service charges?

You have a couple of options for how you can pay these charges.

First, you can choose to pre-pay. In this case, the daily service charge is added into the price of the cruise. When doing this, the charge is already taken care of before you board meaning it’s one less thing to worry about. On the other hand, it also means giving the cruise line more money before you technically have to pay it.

The second way to pay the gratuity charges is to simply wait until you are on the ship. They will be added to your onboard account during the trip. You will then pay with the payment method on file at the end of the cruise as you would with any other onboard spending.

For more on whether or not to pre-pay gratuities, see our article here .

Can I change the amount charged?

In general, no you cannot change the gratuity amount charged. MSC says on their website that “ the Hotel Service charge serves to ensure we maintain the highest quality standards of service to our guests. The daily amounts below have been calculated with this in mind and cannot be modified.”

So if you simply don’t agree with the service charge amount, you can’t adjust it. But what if you receive particularly bad service? In that case, there is some recourse.

The cruise line says “should you wish to remove any of the daily Hotel Service Charge in the unlikely event that you do not receive satisfactory service, you may do so by contacting the Guest Relations Manager onboard.”

Can I tip more if I want? Or tip a specific person?

Many people during the cruise find a particular bartender they love or really appreciate their room steward. So if there’s someone that you want to thank on the cruise, can you tip more?

Most cruise lines encourage this, but MSC specifically says it “does not recommend tipping individual members of staff.” Even so, there is a difference between “not recommending” something and banning it. If you decide you want to slip some extra cash to a crew member, it will likely be appreciated.

Which staff is covered by the MSC service charge?

It’s not specifically laid out exactly how the service charge is applied to the crew. While cruise lines normally are tight-lipped about how exactly the charges break down to the crew members, they do normally lay out in general terms who gets the money.

MSC speaks in even more vague terms about where the money goes:

“During your cruise you will meet staff throughout the ship who provide you with excellent service. They are supported by just as many staff and crew who work hard behind the scenes to ensure you enjoy every moment onboard.

“For your convenience, MSC Cruises will automatically add a daily Hotel Service Charge to your shipboard account, based on your chosen itinerary and the number of days for which the services are actually provided.

“The Hotel Service charge serves to ensure we maintain the highest quality standards of service to our guests. “

Does the service charge cover all the tipping around the ship?

For the most part, MSC’s gratuity charge covers all the tipping you need to do on the ship. So if you go eat in the main dining room, you simply leave when you’re done with the meal. There’s no need to leave a tip.

One area that is not covered is the bar. If you purchase a drink on the ship (assuming you don’t have the drink package) then there is a 18% bar service charge added on automatically for North American cruises and 15% for other trips.

Notably, MSC makes no mention of extra gratuity charges for spa and specialty restaurants, two areas that normally see additional gratuity tacked on for other cruise lines.

What else should I know about MSC’s service charges?

One thing that we think should be pointed out is that when it comes to cruise gratuities, MSC is actually on the low end. For instance, Carnival Cruise Line charges $16 per person , per day as of April 2023. Royal Caribbean also charges $16 per person , per day for most cabins.

There is also no upcharge on the gratuity amount if staying in a suite (these cabins typically see higher gratuity charges on other lines), and there is the lower daily charge for kids 12 and under.

In other words, while no one likes to see extra charges on their cruise, MSC offers one of the best values when it comes to these fees.

In Europe they do pay. It is added to cruise fare automatically so is paid by all and cannot be removed.

So sad..to read such misinfirmed and inaccurate comments…. in which good crew members are gipped out of tips…because a passenger does not understand how it works. Tops or DAILY GRATS…are split with ALL crew…ones you do not see ( laundry, pool deck, etc). Pay your daiky grats. If you’re not happy with something go to guest services and they should correct whatever crew member is not providing you the proper service

This may be accurate for some lines and not others. The one I worked for had tipped positions who received the gratuities (some directly such as waiter and asst waiter and others in pools (bartenders except for add’l tip added by the guest at time of purchase). The back of house didn’t share in the tips at all. And technically if you handed a non-tipped position cash, they were to turn it into their manager to enhance “crew welfare” events of that particular team.

Hello fellow & future cruisers! I absolutely adore cruising 🛳! It’s my favorite way to travel. I’ve only been on 8, soon to be 9.

I learned on my first cruise with Carnival that once you board, it’s best to go straight to the service desk & kindly say “Hello. I’d like to remove the tipping fees from my account.” Without hesitation or question, the Carnival staff immediately is understanding. They look at the computer screen & simply remove the fees. #1 This frees up literally hundreds of $$$$ off of ur c.c. #2 You get to decide who to tip directly, who deserves a lot, a little or nothing. #3 These hard working people should get the tips THEY deserve. One of our waiters once told me, that the servers make about $1.18 average. It was heart breaking.

I bought the drink package & found a bar in the atrium I liked. There was a fantastic bartender that I was so sweet. The first night I gave her $20. She cried & told me that would help her family so much. I got great service from her for the rest of the cruise & have a kind hearted story that touched both her & my soul. ❤️

I’ve had one of the room cleaners that never cleaned anything! By the 7th night, we had at least 10 dirty glasses. There would’ve been more but we kept sending them out with room service. Oh, we tipped our room service people a few bucks each time they came. That put a pep in their step whenever they came over! At the end of our cruise, everyone in our area was talking about how dirty their rooms were. We honestly explained to our room cleaner why we weren’t tipping him. He never changed our sheets or gave us the cute towel animals. We could’ve complained, but eh… I didn’t want negative energy. However I tip accordingly. Maybe next time he’ll do his job.

I hope you all have a fantastic vacation! No matter where u go! Thanks for reading! Much Love, Lynae Thomas

I am on MSC Preziosa at the moment. I did not go to the dining room at all, because they gave me the second seating instead of the first seating, which is too late for me. (I bought the lower class ‘Bella’, so just too bad, I got what they had left!). I asked for my Hotel Service Charges to be paid to the Buffet staff instead of the Dining Room staff. They refused. They said the gratuities is for everyone including the Engine Cleaners! So, actually when they say ‘Hotel Service Charge’ they really mean paying your part of the ‘MSC Pay roll’. Or they could just call it ‘Extra Cruise Fare’. Which is amazing is that Europeans do not have to pay for those extra charges on the European cruise where I am right now. It is mandatory only for the people that have bought their cruise from MSC Cruises USA. Why? I have no idea!!!

Hi I read on the site If booked before November 2022 With msc line There wasn’t a hotel charge is that correct

This has been very helpful! Thank you for all this information. Please if anyone can answer two questions from first-time cruisers: 1) We bought our tickets through a 3rd party…is that the CC MSC will charge our gratuities to at the end of the trip, or will we have a chance to provide them a different CC while onboard? 2) Does buying any of the drinks package cover ALL the gratuities of the total trip ($14.5/day/person), or only the gratuities of the drinks bought?

MSC uses a system where you add the card once you are on the ship (there are kiosks you visit). So you can use whichever card you want once onboard.

The drink package only covers gratuities of the drinks bought.

thank you for the reply. Greatly appreciated. Much to learn bout cruising:)

Great informative post. Thank you. Myself and my husband don’t drink so we plan to not have a drink package. Will we still pay this 18% for a soft drink from the bar. (Pepsi, Coke or a juice etc)? Just curious as we have a Northern Europe trip planned next Spring with MSC

Yes, that charge should be there. However, the amount will be 15% for that region, not 18%.

From MSC’s website:

“Onboard bar purchases will incur a gratuities, automatically added to all purchases: 15% gratuities on European, Emirates, South Caribbean, Red Sea, South America (Brazil and Argentine) and Far East itineraries, and 18% gratuity on North America itineraries.”

When you set sail with MSC Cruises, understanding gratuities is an essential part of planning your budget. In this article, you'll learn the daily rates per person based on age, stateroom type, and itinerary.

On MSC Cruises, gratuities vary by destination and are automatically added to guests' onboard accounts. For the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Northern Europe, and UAE cruises, the daily amount is $14 per adult and $7 per child.

Tipping Customs

  • Gratuities on MSC Cruises are automatic and calculated per person, per day.
  • Service charges vary by destination and accommodations and can be prepaid or settled onboard.
  • Guests can adjust gratuity amounts by contacting onboard guest services if needed.

are gratuities included in msc yacht club

On this page:

Understanding msc gratuity rates, mandatory versus discretionary gratuities, distribution of gratuities, prepaying versus paying onboard, additional tipping for exceptional service, gratuities on msc cruises around the world, unique msc gratuities and charges, how to manage gratuities with msc cruise options.

When booking a cruise with MSC, it's important to understand the gratuity rates that will be added to your bill. These rates are per person, per day, and vary by region and cabin type.

Daily Gratuity Rates

MSC charges a daily gratuity rate to ensure that the service staff who make your cruise enjoyable are properly compensated. The gratuities are charged per person for each night of your cruise.

  • Adults (12 and over): Typically $14.50 per night
  • Children (2-12): Usually $7.25 per night
  • No gratuities are charged for kids under 2 years old

Service Charges by Region

Gratuity rates can vary depending on the destination of your cruise. Here's a simplified breakdown:

  • Adults: $14.50 per night
  • Children: $7.25 per night
  • Adults: Euro 10 per night
  • Children: Euro 5 per night

Note that these rates are subject to change, so it's best to check with MSC Gratuities for the most current information.

Gratuities for Different Cabin Types

Your cabin type can also affect the amount of gratuity you will pay.

  • Standard cabins and Balcony rooms : Follow the standard gratuity rates per person, per day.
  • Suites : Guests may be subject to higher gratuity rates, which compensate for a broader range of services.

To learn about how service charges are managed, visit MSC's Service Charge Information. Remember, these gratuities ensure that the service team aboard your cruise is well taken care of, allowing you to enjoy a worry-free vacation.

When cruising with MSC, you'll encounter both mandatory and discretionary gratuities, which are different in terms of their application and your ability to control them.

Automatic Gratuity Policy

MSC Cruises implements an automatic gratuity policy to ensure that all crew members who contribute to your experience are fairly compensated. These gratuities are added to your onboard account on a daily basis.

  • Adults (12 and older): $14.50 per night
  • Children (2-12 years old): $7.25 per night
  • Children under 2: No service charge

These charges are considered mandatory, as they're automatically added for the convenience of guests. The amounts vary based on the region of your cruise.

Removing Gratuity Charges

While the gratuities are automatic, you do have the discretion to remove or adjust these charges if the service does not meet your expectations. You would need to:

  • Visit the Guest Services desk onboard.
  • Discuss your concerns with a representative.
  • Request for gratuities to be removed or adjusted.

Be aware that this action is taken at your discretion, and it's essential to consider the impact on the crew members who are dedicated to providing you with excellent service throughout your cruise.

In navigating the waters of MSC gratuities, it's essential to understand how your tips are allocated. Your contributions directly impact the hard-working crew members who ensure a pleasant journey.

How Gratuities are Shared

Gratuities on MSC cruises are distributed among the service staff . This includes not only those you may see frequently, such as your cabin stewards and dining staff, but also behind-the-scenes personnel. The distribution process is designed to ensure that both visible and occult crew members are fairly rewarded for their service.

  • Dining Staff: A portion is shared with the waitstaff in the dining areas.
  • Cabin Stewards: Your room attendants receive a share for their daily efforts.
  • Bartenders: Those who serve your drinks at the ship's bars are also included.
  • Other Support Staff: Many other staff members who contribute to the operation and cleanliness of the ship benefit from gratuities.

Rewarding Individual Crew Members

If you receive exemplary service from a specific crew member, MSC allows you to reward them directly. This is in addition to the overall gratuities that are automatically added to your bill. You can provide an extra tip to recognize individual efforts, ensuring those who go above and beyond are personally acknowledged.

  • Individual Efforts Recognized: Exceptional service can be rewarded with an additional tip.
  • Direct Contribution: If you choose, you may hand a cash tip directly to the individual.

The gratuities you provide contribute to the livelihoods of multiple staff members, making your cruise experience enjoyable and memorable.

Choosing between prepaying gratuities and settling them onboard is an important part of your cruise planning process. This choice can affect your cruise budget and the convenience of managing your expenses.

Advantages of Prepaid Gratuities

  • Budgeting : When you prepay, you know exactly how much you'll spend on gratuities. This helps in planning your cruise budget before departure.
  • Convenience : Prepaying means one less thing to think about during your holiday. Your final bill will be lower since gratuities are already taken care of.
  • Rate Lock : Prepaying gratuities ensures that you lock in the current rate, protecting you from any potential increases in the gratuity rates.

Onboard Gratuity Payments

  • Flexibility : Paying onboard allows you to modify gratuity amounts based on the service you receive.
  • Payment Timing : If you prefer to settle your expenses at one time, paying gratuities on your final bill could be more convenient for you.

While MSC Cruises includes a mandatory service charge for all guests, you may find moments when you want to tip above the set rates to show appreciation for exceptional service.

When to Tip Above the Set Rates

Above and Beyond : If a crew member or guest relations manager goes beyond their duties to enhance your cruising experience, additional tipping is an impactful way to reward their dedication.

Specialty Restaurants : Exquisite dining experiences that exceed the highest quality standards might prompt you to consider extra gratuities for the attentive staff.

Examples of Exceptional Service

  • Personalized Attention : If service personnel remember your preferences and tailor their service to your tastes, this personalized attention is a hallmark of exemplary service.
  • Unique Requests : Fulfilling special requests that add significant value to your voyage demonstrate a commitment worth acknowledging with an additional tip.

Gratuities on MSC cruises vary by region and itinerary, influencing how much you'll set aside for tips during your cruise. These service charges are a way to reward the crew for their excellent service.

Gratuities on Different Itineraries

  • Asia: Expect service charges to reflect the local hospitality standards, where gratuities are often lower than Western expectations.
  • South America: Your gratuities may be comparable to European rates but check for seasonal variations.
  • USA: Sailing from American ports often means a daily rate per person will be added to your bill.
  • Northern Europe: Rates can align with broader European standards, possibly influenced by regional trends.

Region-Specific Gratuity Norms

  • Bahamas: When departing from nearby American ports, the gratuity rates are likely consistent with those set for U.S. itineraries.
  • China: Service charges here could differ, as tipping practices in East Asia are not as prevalent as in the West.
  • Japan: Japanese cruises might reflect local customs, which traditionally do not include tipping.
  • South Africa Cruises: While less common, if gratuities apply, they'll potentially be in line with the emerging cruise market standards of the region.

For a well-rounded understanding of gratuities on cruises, it's advisable to familiarize yourself with the destination-specific tipping procedures which can greatly enhance your experience and show appreciation toward the ship's diligent crew.

MSC Cruises has specific gratuity charges that contribute to the overall cruise experience. These service charges are standardized across their fleet and directly support the crew for the services provided.

Hotel Service Charge

The hotel service charge is a daily fee added to your account, covering the hospitality services you receive on board. This gratuity ensures that all staff, from stewards to dining room personnel, are recognized for their work.

  • No charge for children under 2 years old

Bar and Drink Package Service Charges

When purchasing drinks or opting for drink packages, you'll incur a bar service charge. This is an automatic addition to the price of your drink package or individual beverage, ensuring that bar staff are fairly compensated for their service.

  • Beverage purchases: 15% service charge added
  • Drink packages: Service charge included in the pre-paid package price

MSC Gratuities (Tips/Service Charge): Full Guide to Cost & How They ...

Managing gratuities on an MSC Cruise is straightforward and can be tailored to your individual needs. Here are key methods to handle service charges, particularly for families, through various promotions, and within MSC's unique programs.

Gratuities for Families and Children

For families cruising with MSC, gratuities are simplified. Children under 2 years old are not subject to service charges.

  • Children (2-12 years old) : Typically pay half the adult rate.

These rates may vary slightly based on the cruise region. It's a cost-saving aspect for families but remember to confirm the specific amounts during or after your booking process.

Managing Gratuities with Cruise Promotions

MSC Cruises occasionally offers promotions where gratuities can be prepaid or included in the fare. This can be particularly convenient for you when budgeting:

  • Bella Experience : Gratuities not included, standard rates apply.
  • Fantastica Experience : May come with promotional deals that include gratuities.

Check for current promotions when you manage your booking to take advantage of any available offers.

MSC Specific Programs and Gratuity Policies

Gratuities on MSC Cruises can also depend on the specific program you choose. The MSC Grand Voyage, for example, may have different gratuity policies compared to standard cruises.

  • MSC Grand Voyage : Policies can vary, so it's important to review the terms when selecting this option.

How MSC’s private island experience is different for cruisers in suites

Ashley Kosciolek

Do you enjoy large cruise ships but still want to feel like you're in the lap of luxury? Passengers booked in MSC Cruises' Yacht Club cabins and suites have access to high-end amenities – both on the ship and off.

Butlers, exclusive dining and a private pool delight guests on board, but perks also await on MSC 's private island, Ocean Cay Marine Reserve , in the Bahamas. You can expect dedicated trams, towel service and a chance to book the nicest cabanas on the island, among other extras.

MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club beaches vs. regular beaches

are gratuities included in msc yacht club

MSC's Ocean Cay Marine Reserve private island is home to seven (soon to be eight) beaches, and all are public, except one — Ocean House Beach, which is the Yacht Club's exclusive swath of sand. Beyond its exclusivity, the beach has a few other differences from the island's regular beaches.

There, use of lounge chairs and umbrellas is free. Chairs at the other beaches are also free and available on a first-come, first-served basis; however, umbrellas come with an extra cost.

Passengers must sign out towels on board the ship before heading ashore to Ocean Cay's main beaches. Yacht Club passengers can skip that hassle and ask for towels at the towel tent found on Ocean House Beach.

Interestingly, I found that several of the public beaches were less crowded than Ocean House Beach. At the latter, chairs were positioned much more closely to one another. If you're willing to walk or hitch a ride on one of the island's trams, you'll find fewer crowds on the farther beaches than if you stick close to the ship.

MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club food vs. regular dining

are gratuities included in msc yacht club

Free lunch is included for all cruisers who visit Ocean Cay. For Yacht Club travelers, the Ocean House Restaurant — an exclusive waiter-served dining venue where passengers enjoy their meals on a shaded porch — exudes upscale beach vibes.

During my visit, the menu included starters like crab ceviche, charred octopus and a salad with romaine, tomatoes, jicama, a poached egg and candied bacon in a citrus dressing. Mains featured locally sourced blackened mahi-mahi, lobster roll, carne asada, a grilled portobello mushroom sandwich and one of the best burgers I've ever tasted during a cruise — a blend of Angus chuck, short ribs and grilled brisket with red onion jam and Monterey Jack cheese. Desserts consisted of creme caramel, mango cheesecake and chocolate cake with coffee sauce.

The meals at Ocean House are definitely superior to the fare found at the Seakers buffet, which is where cruisers not staying in the Yacht Club can go for a beach barbecue that serves hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, macaroni and cheese, red beans, roasted potatoes and a slew of salads, drinks and desserts.

The food is tasty, but lines can be long. An alternative is to head to one of several food trucks throughout the island. Some are free and dole out the same items offered on the buffet but with shorter lines. Others sell entirely different menu items — lobster grilled cheese, fried calamari, shrimp with watermelon, Caribbean ceviche and octopus salad — with the cost charged to cruisers' onboard accounts.

Additionally — and also for an extra fee — a stand near the ship offers specialty coffee and ice cream. (If you're a coffee lover, trust me when I say you won't want to miss the Coco-Nilla Latte.)

MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club cabanas vs. regular cabanas

are gratuities included in msc yacht club

There are three types of cabanas on Ocean Cay: Ocean Cay Beach Cabanas, Ocean View Yacht Club Cabanas and Beachfront Yacht Club Cabanas. All three types are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

They can hold up to six people each and include cold water, beach towels and chairs, as well as floating mats for use in the water. As the prices increase, so does the number of inclusions. The last two types are only available for booking by Yacht Club passengers.

Ocean Cay Beach Cabanas, found on South Beach, North Beach and Bimini Beach, are the most affordable on the island at $250 for the day. They've got walls on three sides, and they're outfitted with cushioned couches. They include the basic amenities mentioned above, and anyone can rent them.

Next up are the Ocean View Yacht Club Cabanas, which cost $400 for the day and also entitle you to free lunch and drinks, as well as fresh fruit skewers, four sets of snorkel gear and four floating mats. They're found on the Yacht Club's private Ocean House Beach, so they're off-limits to non-Yacht Club guests.

are gratuities included in msc yacht club

The most expensive, however, are the Beachfront Yacht Club Cabanas, located in a different section of the Ocean House area. They carry a $450 price tag but offer all the same extras as Ocean View Yacht Club Cabanas.

The draw? They're closer to the water and, therefore, have better views. Although they aren't on the main part of Ocean House Beach, they are still in the exclusive area, near the restaurant, so you don't have to go far to grab food.

Ultimately, the only thing being in the Yacht Club affords you in this case is the option to book more expensive cabanas.

MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club trams vs. regular trams

are gratuities included in msc yacht club

At 95 acres, Ocean Cay is sizable. If you're fit, you can walk from one end to the other in about 15 minutes, but if you don't have great mobility or if you're easily overheated, reaching some of the island's more remote beaches can be difficult on foot. That's why MSC offers tram shuttles.

Passengers in standard cabins will find tram stops with shaded waiting areas throughout the island. However, waits can be long, especially if many other people are also in need of a lift.

Yacht Club cruisers can take advantage of trams exclusively for the Yacht Club. They run between a special tent (with free cold water to sip while you wait) set up just inside the entrance to Ocean Cay and the Ocean House beach and restaurant area.

You can make special requests for stops, which the regular trams usually won't accommodate. For example, you might ask to go straight from the tent to South Beach for a volleyball game without stopping anywhere else first.

MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club activities vs. regular activities

are gratuities included in msc yacht club

This is the one category where the island's public spaces beat the Ocean House area by a mile. If you're looking for something to do other than eating, drinking or lazing by the beach, you'll have to head back toward the ship because there's not much going on in the exclusive areas.

Everything from massages, lighthouse tours and water sports equipment rentals to beach parties, volleyball games and shore excursions takes place elsewhere. However, perhaps that's by design. The Yacht Club is generally quiet, even on board, and the line likely prefers to keep the raucousness to other locations.

Bottom line

are gratuities included in msc yacht club

The MSC Yacht Club experience is more exclusive than the standard one at Ocean Cay, with extras like butler service, dedicated trams, towel service, access to pricier cabanas and a private beach and restaurant with better food and shorter waits.

However, all of the action — shore excursions, pickup volleyball games, beach parties, the lighthouse show — happens in the areas that are accessible to everyone, which significantly levels the playing field.

Additionally, items like specialty coffee, ice cream and for-fee food truck orders cost extra for everyone — even Yacht Club passengers.

Overall, Ocean Cay offers a great day for anyone who enjoys the beach, regardless of cabin type.

Yacht Club Service Fee

On the MSC website they state that the automatic tipping charge is $14.50 per person, per day.  Is there an additional charge for passengers sailing in the Yacht Club or is it just assumed we would voluntarily tip extra?

Same as the rest of the ship. If you choose to tip more, you can.

MSC has mandatory Daily (Hotel) Service charge per passenger in all of their Experiences (booking classes) including YC.

Daily Service Charge is no tipping fee.

..from MSC USA website..

During your cruise, you will meet staff throughout the ship who provide you with excellent service. They are supported by just as many staff and crew who work hard behind the scenes to ensure you enjoy every moment on board. For your convenience, MSC Cruises will automatically add a daily Hotel Service Charge to your shipboard account, based on your chosen itinerary and the number of days for which the services are actually provided.

The Hotel Service charge serves to ensure we maintain the highest quality standards of service to our guests. The daily amounts below have been calculated with this in mind and cannot be modified. However, should you wish to remove any of the daily Hotel Service Charge in the unlikely event that you do not receive satisfactory service, you may do so by contacting the Guest Relations Manager onboard. If you wish, the daily Service Charge for your cruise can be added to the price of your cruise at the time of booking, rather than added to your onboard account during the cruise. Please let your booking agent know if you would like to add the Service Charge to your cruise price.

TIPS: MSC does not recommend tipping individual members of staff.

There are no other charges. We did pay extra $48 each to upgrade to streaming wifi for the week.

Just a word to the wise. It is better to be discreet in ones tipping so as not to embarrass the more thrifty gentry sharing the same venue. We novice bumpkins are not entitled to more attention that we receive in response to our largesse.

On our most recent cruise I met with the maitre d' to express my desires and then asked him if he was going to be our maitre d' for the entire cruise. He assured me he was and to 'express' my 'appreciation' that everything would be as I requested, I tipped him. Just at the moment of his hand and mine clasping an officer approached and witnessed the act. I asked the officer if he had anything to do with the dedicated restaurant and he said he was the manager of all the restaurants. I proceeded to go into my pocket again for another tip 'in kind' when the officer stopped me and said for him it is not necessary. The maitre d' chimed in and said "whenever you feel the urge to tip my boss to give it to me. I will make sure he gets it."

Haha

We had sailed in the Yacht Club on Divina in January 2020.  I do know the service was excellent and we rewarded our waiter, Maitre de, the Concierge, butler and his assistant over the standard amount.

We've sailed several times in YC and tip extra to those who give us exceptional and personal service. We have always recognized our server and assistant in the YC restaurant and our butler and assistant in our stateroom. We've also tipped the YC restaurant maitre de, chef and hostess(es) at times, as well as particular Top Sail butlers and bartenders, and the YC concierges. Envelopes are available via the YC concierges and they are also especially helpful with spelling people's names or helping us identify people who we only know by sight (they have images of all the crew on their computer and that has saved us more than once when we have someone whose name we never are able to catch from their badge).

That's good to know.  I like the idea of the envelope rather than just the cash.

Liz

Can someone provide YC tipping “guidelines”, please?  My April cruise will be my 75th cruise overall, second time on MSC but first time in YC (or similar category). I usually tip my stateroom attendant and waiter in cash (above and beyond DSC) but am stumped when it comes to butler, concierge, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Tip whatever amount that you want to whomever you want. You can't tip too much. You can't tip too little.

It's up to you.

Do it discreet and use a envelope. Give the envelope with both hands. Not just one 🙂
