Aquijo sailing yacht underway

Aquijo: Inside the three-year circumnavigation of the world's largest ketch

Taking perilous winds in her stride, 86 metre Aquijo has just completed a mesmerising circumnavigation. Captain Gerhard Veldsman tells Georgia Boscawen about their awe-inspiring encounters

“When a glacier cracks and an apartment-sized block of ice falls to the water, it sounds like a gunshot,” recalls captain Gerhard Veldsman of Aquijo . Few things in life could compare to a spectacle as thrilling as a lone 86 metre sailing yacht anchored at the face of a gargantuan glacier in the Chilean fjords. However, for Veldsman, his crew and the owners of Aquijo , this is just one of a long list of awe-inspiring encounters they had during their circumnavigation of the globe. Setting off in the Med, they headed to Cape Verde, then down to Patagonia and across to Oceania in a voyage that spanned more than three years.

At 86 metres, Aquijo is the largest ketch in the world – a thoroughbred, and the fruit of not one, but two Dutch powerhouses: Vitters and later Oceanco , which joined forces to complete this unique sailing yacht.

In 2010, Bill Tripp of Tripp Design Naval Architecture penned the lines for a yacht capable of both global cruising and racing. This proposition drew the two shipyards together. Vitters brought high-performance sailing yacht pedigree, and Oceanco brought its prowess in the 80-metre superyacht sphere.

Aquijo ’s design is influenced by the need for flexibility. The sailplan is subdivided with each sail producing similar forces, while keeping the number of sails and system parts to a minimum. The result is hasty sail setting, easy tacking and a vessel that is unequivocally fast.

“She responds very quickly,” says Veldsman. “For such a big boat she sails incredibly well. You can turn the rigs like you would on a raceboat – I think a lot of people find it surprising how fast she sails for such a big boat.”

This design also means she is more than capable of handling conditions when things get rough, which, as Veldsman points out, they certainly did on several occasions. The first leg of the tour – cruising to Cape Verde and over to Punta del Este, Uruguay, before heading to Patagonia – was already remarkable, but it was when the yacht reached Ushuaia, in Argentina, that the owners came on board for an extremely windy bucket list moment.

“We picked up the owners for a four-week trip that would see us round Cape Horn,” recalls Veldsman as he brings up charts of this once-in-a-lifetime expedition. “Of course, it was windy, and we anchored in a spot called the False Horn – a protected area often mistaken for Cape Horn – and I remember saying to myself, ‘If the wind is blowing more than 45 knots in the morning, I’m going to call it.’”

Veldsman awoke to find the wind blowing far over 50 knots in the protected anchorage – a moment that could have seen a sheepish retreat to base. “We poked our heads out from False Horn, and we had wind speeds of 60 knots.” Determined, Veldsman proceeded anyway,  and sailed Aquijo around the perilous cape in violent conditions.

“Travelling upwind on the starboard side, that was the worst part, and we had ski goggles on, rain and sleet coming at us, and the whole family outside – it was amazing,” he adds.

From here, Aquijo sailed to Patagonia, cruising through a place informally referred to as Glacier Alley and up to Puerto Montt in Chile – a leg that reinforced the need for meticulous planning in blissful isolation. “That southern part is very remote and it’s quite a distance. There’s nowhere to buy food, no civilization at all – it was incredible,” says Veldsman. “The boat was built for this purpose. So, it’s quite well set up to be able to cope with cold weather, and we carry enough food, fuel and water to deal with just about anything.”

In this part of the world, the weather can change in an instant, from no wind to 60-knot winds at a moment’s notice. Veldsman explains that the ice here also flows down at speed in the middle of the night and you can wake up to find the yacht entrenched in it.

For Veldsman, Patagonia was the highlight of the whole tour. Aquijo even took a couple of charters while in the region, before relocating to South America and cruising around Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and over to the Galápagos with a stop at the secluded Cocos Island.

Aquijo then sailed back down to the Southern Pacific and French Polynesia, but this wasn’t a case of passing through. During the tour, Aquijo hosted local guides, scientists, expert divers and often worked with EYOS to source the very best people for each adventure. “It was all very action-packed – there was an excursion every day, with a guide, too,” explains Veldsman.  “It’s important to get the right guides when you go to these places as you’re only going to do it once. It was incredible.”

Unfortunately, one of the activities in the tropics almost had sinister consequences. “We had fantastic diving along the way and across to Tonga, Fiji and Vanuatu,” says Veldsman. “Although our boss got an infection over there that almost killed him. It’s quite common in the Tropics as small cuts and bruises can get infected very quickly.”

Veldsman recalls Papua New Guinea as another defining moment on the trip, on a par with Patagonia. Aquijo headed there after a short maintenance period in New Zealand. “Papua New Guinea is very remote, but the nature and the tribes are beautiful. We had a local guide with us who took us deep into the jungle and we even saw the Baining Fire Dance,” he recalls. This is a traditional night-time ceremony, celebrating many of the tribe’s life-changing events, such as initiating young men into adulthood. Tribesmen partake in passionate dance-based rituals.

“We will go back there and see the tribes of the Pacific river,” vows Veldsman. “These tribes won’t exist 20 years from now. You can see the crocodile men, who scar themselves to look like crocodiles, with bones through their noses, living in the jungle. It’s incredible – I look back and just think, wow!”

While the yacht was in Papua New Guinea’s New Ireland Province, another medical incident struck when one of the stewardesses fell victim to decompression sickness. “I needed to get her to the closest decompression chamber and our options were Port Moresby [Papua New Guinea’s capital], which is one of the world’s most dangerous cities, or Australia [almost  900 nautical miles away].” The stewardess ended up flying to Australia, where she made a full recovery.

Diving was an integral part of the tour and those on board were able to swim with whales and sharks, as well as taking in incredible coral reefs. “A lot of what happens in the Southern Pacific is in and under the water,” says Veldsman. “We used a well-known local diver, Rodolphe Holler from Tahiti Private Expeditions. When you’re in the water, the whales breach so close to you that you can touch them.”

As we talk, Aquijo is in Palma, almost 9,000 nautical miles from the whales that make their annual migration through the balmy waters of French Polynesia. However, plans are already afoot for her to embark on another global migration through the Northwest Passage, back to the Pacific and over to Japan. With adventure-seeking owners and Veldsman at the helm, there is no doubt that the largest ketch in the world will handle whatever is thrown at her.

Aquijo Yacht: Large Sailing Yacht Ready For Charter

  • By Kim Kavin
  • Updated: September 12, 2016

aquijo yacht newport ri

Aquijo is arguably the most impressive sailing yacht available for charter anywhere in the world. I know that’s a big statement to make about a brand-new yacht, but let’s consider the facts.

The 279-foot Aquijo was delivered to her owners earlier this year following joint construction by the powerhouse Dutch shipyards Vitters and Oceanco . She was built to a standard that made her a first-of-its-kind project for both yards.

Y.CO

Bear in mind, these are the shipyards that produced innovations ranging from direct-drive pods on performance cruising yachts (previously seen only on racing yachts, according to Vitters) to a brackish-water pool with a height-adjustable floor made of glass-reinforced plastic (a first that Oceanco claimed in 2012, with the 290-foot superyacht Nirvana ). On Aquijo , one of the innovations is a steering system meant to provide immediate feedback at the helm, enhancing the experience of holding the wheel aboard a yacht of substantial size. In other words, charter guests can stand at the helm of the 279-foot yacht and feel her respond much as a smaller yacht would, amping the exhilaration factor at 17 knots in just over 21 knots of breeze.

And let’s put a fine point on Aquijo ‘s size — because it’s impressive. In terms of length overall among sailing yachts in the global charter fleet, Aquijo ranks just behind the Perini Navi Maltese Falcon and the Royal Huisman Athena , both of which remain iconic even though they are more than a decade old. The masts aboard Aquijo are a vertigo-inducing 295 feet tall. She is the world’s largest high-performance ketch, a distinction that holds true when describing yachts used privately as well as those offered for charter.

Y.CO

And then there are Aquijo ‘s features. Vitters and Oceanco previously built some of the most in-demand yachts available for charter, including the 180-foot Marie (which appears on page 68) and the 282-foot Seven Seas, built for director Steven Spielberg with an onboard theater that continues to wow guests of all ages. Aquijo incorporates everything the yards have learned about guest comfort and memorable spaces, culminating in elements like the beach club in the photograph at left. It is the type of space rarely found aboard sailing yachts of any size, and it includes what you see in the photograph plus a sauna and steam room.

That beach club is just one of many elements that Aquijo shares with super-yachts on the charter scene. She also is handicapped-friendly, with a stateroom designed to accommodate a wheelchair as well as a swim platform that lowers into the water for easy access. Y.CO says that she is also the only sailing yacht for charter that has an elevator.

Y.CO

Indeed, upon her entry into the Y.CO charter fleet this past summer, Aquijo was an instant competitor not only to the most impressive sailing yachts, but also to superyachts.

“When you have an 86-meter sailing yacht that’s over 1,500 gross tons, you’re competing with motoryachts,” says Tom DeBuse, director of charter management for Y.CO. “I’m in negotiations at the moment with a guy who’s taken large motoryachts in the past, and he has taken some sailing yachts in the past. He’s taking Aquijo because she has everything a large motoryacht has, plus.”

Aquijo is expected to move to the Caribbean this winter, where she will undoubtedly be the most in-demand sailing yacht for charter from St. Barth straight down to Grenada.

Bill Tripp of Tripp Design Naval Architecture in Connecticut handled Aquijo ‘s design. She is the largest project from the renowned naval architect, whose other work has included the 148-foot Saudade and the 164-foot Better Place , both built by Wally. The owners of Aquijo reportedly brought Tripp a preliminary layout by the German firm Dölker + Voges , which handled interior design. The owners tasked Tripp with creating a package around that interior that would provide safety, comfort and speed.

Y.CO

Y.CO is advertising Aquijo for charter with 12 guests in seven staterooms. As you can see in the photographs at right, the onboard spaces are laid out to accommodate large and small gatherings alike. The top-deck hot tub is in addition to the one inside the beach club, so multiple groups of guests (think adults and children) can enjoy a soak at the same time, without having countless knees and ankles in the mix.

The main indoor and outdoor dining areas are sized to welcome the full complement of charter guests; smaller areas for snacks and more intimate meals are in spaces like the top-deck enclaves (with gimbaled tables for underway dining) and aft-deck nooks. Interior seating is designed to inspire conversation among groups of five or six guests, executing the impressive feat of making one of the largest sailing yachts on the planet feel, at times, cozy.

Y.CO

Aquijo ‘s décor is intended to feel contemporary and welcoming, not overwhelming. Note the use of aquamarine hues in everything from stateroom walls to sun-deck pillows. The onboard vibe, much like Aquijo ‘s beach club, brings the outdoors inside. Her wooden soles create a further, tactile connection to nature. (Imagine how your bare feet feel on plush carpeting, as opposed to cool wood. One sensation screams “formal” while the other whispers “beach-house chic.”)

There’s also the oversize windows in the guest stateroom, along with the multitiered chandeliers that appear to glow above the sofas and chairs in the conversation space. These design elements give the yacht a feeling of openness. The aft deck dining table is beneath a retractable sunroof, allowing that feeling to continue into the evening hours during meals under the stars.

Y.CO

Many of these elements, of course, are borrowed from the world of superyacht design, and they are why Y.CO markets Aquijo as a yacht that “offers the comfort of a large motoryacht while remaining a true sailing yacht at heart.” Even spots like the chaise lounges far aft (shown in the photograph to the left of this text) have the feel of a traditional sailing-yacht experience, but on a scale almost always associated with superyachts in the 180-foot-and-larger range. You can see a few of the steps to the main deck peeking out of the side of the photograph. Imagine walking down them, in your bathing suit, and settling in to enjoy the view astern from such a sizable platform. It is an experience that can only be had aboard precious few charter yachts in existence.

It is also worth noting how elegantly Tripp and the shipyards answered the owner’s call for safety on board. That is key to the charter-yacht experience — clients are not always seasoned yachtsmen, let alone sailors. Look at the photograph on the next page, which shows handrails on both sides of the lighted steps to the next deck. You can also see good-height side decks behind the table to starboard. They prevent overboard falls without affecting the water views of guests enjoying dinner.

Y.CO

To call Aquijo impressive is accurate. To anticipate the charter experience she will provide is thrilling. To know she is available for bookings in the Caribbean this winter is, truly, the stuff of which vacation dreams are made.

That quality of pure inspiration, maybe more than anything else, qualifies Aquijo as the most remarkable sailing yacht now available for charter, anywhere.

PRESENTING AQUIJO

It took two famous Dutch shipyards to collaborate and build sail yacht AQUIJO, the largest private ketch on earth.  The 83-meter yacht was jointly created by Dutch shipyards Oceanco and Vitters with each yard handling their respective fields of expertise.  This massive private yacht charter vessel accommodates up to 12 charter guests and boasts four decks in a superstructure designed to merge indoor and outdoor living areas.  Her long, clear sightlines are credited to Tripp Design Naval Architecture, with the studio of Dölker + Voges responsible for Oceanco and Vitters yacht AQUIJO interior design.

VITTERS CREATION

The steering system for sailing yacht AQUIJO was designed and developed by Vitters. It works by translating the hydrodynamic forces on the yacht’s rudder blades directly to the steering wheels in the flybridge.  This provides the helmsman with immediate feedback and eases the ability to sail and change directions without disturbing charter guests.

Boarding the vessel’s main deck from the aft, visitors see an immense al-fresco dining table which can seat 20. The table separates into two smaller tables. In specific, tables seating six each.  A wet bar is positioned near the doors that lead into the main salon.  The main salon offers comfortable seating for 10. Forward of the salon is the private dining room with elegant seating for 20 guests.

Moving up to the Sundeck (flybridge) there are two helm stations serving as the main control station for the crew to sail the vessel.  Guests will find comfortable sofas where they can watch the crew sail the yacht, or watch the scenery pass by.  In the aft area of the deck, there is a Jacuzzi style hot tub and sun pad for lounging and sun worship.

CONVERSATION AREA

Off the main deck is the aft deck – a large area with a selection of sofa seating and room for the crew to set up a barbeque.  An interesting conversation piece is a large skylight in the deck floor that illuminates the Beach Club below.  The aft deck extends down a small flight of wide stairs to the swimming platform. This feature is popular on large motor yachts.  It is rare on sailing yachts.  Only the largest sailboats have the necessary space for a relaxation deck close to the water’s edge.

The yacht’s beach club is truly a masterpiece.  No other sailing yacht has a full-sized Wellness center with so many amenities.  It features a teak and sculpted wooden interior by the craftsmen at the Oceanco shipyard.   Amenities in this spa area include a hot tub, roomy sauna, and steam room.  An aft door opens to allow views of the outdoors from the hot tub.

BOW (FRONT)

At the front of the yacht is the Foredeck, a quiet area away from the other decks.  Here guests can sit in sofas and feel the full force of the wind and listening to the waves pound against the bow.

Aquijo will be offering motor yacht amenities in a pedigreed sailing yacht in at least three of the South Pacific’s most beautiful cruising grounds this summer. The 282-foot sailing yacht, a joint project of Dutch builders Oceanco and Vitters, was launched two years ago to great acclaim, partly because of the yacht’s sailing prowess, and partly because of its colorful, spacious interior by Dӧlker + Voges. Aquijo was designed for comfort, with unusual features like an elevator, alfresco dining table for 24, three outdoor bars, beach club/spa, and unusually spacious saloons and staterooms (two for nannies or other supernumeraries). The yacht’s mast is a stunning 312 feet tall, making ocean sailing exceptional. This best-of-both-worlds design makes this yacht unique in the charter world. Aquijo will be chartering in French Polynesia through the middle part of July and then sail on to Fiji and Vanuatu. Weekly price is about $525,000 through Y.CO .

ICYMI: A couple vanishes at sea, a Newport crime spree, and a stranded whale

T his week: A couple with Rhode Island ties is missing after their yacht is stolen, a man is accused of setting fire to a Newport mansion before jacking a car and –- in case you missed it –- a whale is euthanized after becoming stranded in a pond.

Virginia couple with Rhode Island ties vanishes in Caribbean amid boat hijacking

A Virginia couple with a Rhode Island connection is missing after escaped convicts allegedly stole their yacht in the Caribbean.

Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel were last seen on their 48-foot catamaran Simplicity in St. George's Bay, Grenada, on Feb. 18.

Officials said they believe three violent prisoners in Grenada boarded the boat after escaping police custody.

The three suspects were captured and charged with their original crimes.

The couple’s family said the suspects will soon be charged with Kathy and Ralph's disappearance.

Man accused of carjacking, setting fire to Newport mansion held without bail

Newport police said a man arrested for a carjacking also set multiple fires at a Newport mansion early Wednesday morning.

Authorities said 25-year-old Foster Krupa set four fires in the basement of a privately owned mansion on Ruggles Avenue and vandalized multiple cars parked across the street.

Police said after the fire, Krupa threatened a woman with a fishing spear on Bellevue Avenue before stealing and crashing her car in a wooded area on Wickham Road.

Krupa was charged with 16 counts, including robbery, arson, breaking and entering, two counts of felony assault, larceny over $1,500, five counts of vandalism, two counts of simple assault, resisting arrest, duty to stop in an accident involving a motor vehicle, and injuring or tampering with vehicles.

Krupa was ordered held without bail at his arraignment in Newport District Court.

Distance learning extended at Toll Gate High School due to flooding, electrical fire

Students at Toll Gate High School were scheduled to return to the classroom this week after February break, but Mother Nature had other plans.

Warwick School Committee Chairperson Shaun Galligan said a frozen heating coil ruptured on Sunday night, causing flooding on the third floor.

On Wednesday, there was an electrical fire inside the school, damaging the library and a dozen rooms, leading to an additional week of remote learning.

Galligan said he expects students to be back in school on March 11.

Whale stranded in Potter Pond in South Kingstown

A whale that became stranded in South Kingstown and unable to free itself was euthanized on Thursday night.

The whale, which was 30 to 40 feet long and weighed 25,000 pounds, was stranded in Potter Pond.

Sarah Callan, manager of the animal rescue program at Mystic Aquarium, said the whale was likely a juvenile fin whale and appeared emaciated.

Rescuers hoped the whale would free itself at high tide at midday, but it wasn't able to.

"From my previous experience, when animals do strand and they are in really poor health, a lot of times, as sad as it is, the animal’s welfare is what we care about the most and if they are compromised and in really bad condition, then sometimes the humane thing is euthanasia," Callan said.

The carcass of a second whale was found on Moonstone Beach on Friday, but experts say it was likely dead before it washed up on shore.

STEM skills at work: International Yacht Restoration School offers chance for second career

NEWPORT – Full-time teacher to full-time student? Seeking a new career at age 55?

Nick Willis of Providence didn't rush into this life-altering decision. He said he and his wife, nurse practitioner Heather Glenn, like to carefully weigh all factors before making their decisions. In this case, once they put all relevant information on the scale, the decision, while pushing them a tad out of their comfort zone, was clear.

This past September, with a long career as a software engineer for Raytheon and, most recently, two very satisfying years teaching mathematics at the Blackstone Academy Charter School in Pawtucket in his rear-view mirror, Willis showed up at the IYRS School of Technology and Trades, enrolled in its six-month Marine Systems program.

He recently completed the on-campus program and is now honing his electrical systems drafting skills, and making a few dollars again, in the school's externship program.

Willis said he had a “great career” at Raytheon and labeled Blackstone Charter teaching the best job he's ever had. He said the students were amazing, the faculty passionate, and the leadership committed to maintaining “a wonderful school." Leaving BACS was not done without emotion.

“IYRS really tugged at my heart, though, and I felt it would create an opportunity in the future to be teaching something a little bit more pragmatic than factoring quadratic equations,” Willis said. “There's a lot of talk about the importance of STEM. Well, if you want STEM, you need look no further than a marine diesel engine or electrical system.”

How the International Yacht Restoration School programs work

IYRS was founded, in 1993, as the International Yacht Restoration School. Founders Elizabeth Meyer and John Mecray envisioned a a true wooden boat restoration program. The school over three decades has grown to now offer four programs of study – boat building and restoration (20 months), composites technology (9 months), digital modeling and fabrication (9 months), and marine systems (6 months). All four programs have been accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges.

According to Julia McCann, IYRS director of marketing, the majority of the school's students are career changers, and the externship program is a key component of making the switch effective for students. She noted that IYRS collaborates with highly-regarded industry partners for both externships and job placement. Students and alumni can access the IYRS job portal. The school, she said, has an 85 percent job placement average for grads, with hobbyists accounting for a portion of the 15 percent.

“IYRS graduates typically excel fast in their new careers,” she said, “rising to new roles and opportunities with their employers.”

More: RIC's cybersecurity institute plans to grow with AI courses and new 'cyber range'

In a blog post on the IYRS website, Willis noted that marine systems students enjoy multiple field trips to boat yards, electronics shops, and suppliers and get to hear from guests speakers and enjoyed a career day filled with employers from Maine to California. One day, he said, three vice-presidents from nationwide Safe Harbor Marinas visited the students. The students, he said, also had the pleasure of Al Thomason, co-founder of engine-base charge control company Wakespeed, spending a day with them.

The IYRS' very concentrated education model – essentially five full work days per week – rapidly takes students from Day 1 to work force ready. Willis said that with their savings and his wife's income and some spending adjusting when needed, they were able to financially handle his paying for school and being out of work for half a year. They saw it and now see it as a wise investment. He described his wife as “incredibly supportive” during the new career adventure.

Students of all ages and experience levels

Willis said his fellow IYRS students included those right out of high school as well as people retiring from the Navy and Coast Guard. He said he immensely enjoyed the support of his cohorts. Some of his fellow students are taking a career paths to Maine, to the Caribbean, with others sticking around to help continue the state's history of master boat building.

Willis said he was experiencing some nerves leading up to his back-to-school start date. Those nerves were soothed, he said, on Day 1 when IYRS brought all the students into the boat building and restoration area and emphasized the inclusive school culture. That, he said, was followed by two weeks of message reinforcement.

“They could write the book on what it takes to create a safe learning environment, and I don't just mean safety with tools, although they are good at that, too,” he said.

Combining technical knowledge with practical skills

Born in England and raised on Massachusetts' North Shore, Wills said that while he lived most of his life near the ocean, his passion for boats and the maritime world did not surface until 2020. Due to COVID, he and his wife were itching for outdoor activities. They took sailing lessons. (“She enjoys it, I'm a bit of a nut about it,” he said.). They subsequently bought a 37-foot sailboat built in 1999.

When he was teaching algebra and pre-calculus at Blackstone Valley Charter School, Willis said that when he showed students pictures of some of the electrical work he was doing on his boat, some of them said they weren't smart enough to do such work. Wills said he knew his students were plenty smart enough, and got him thinking seriously about IYRS and that perhaps what he really should be doing is helping children connect into the maritime trades.

That dream still lives.

“I am exiting the Marine Systems program with what I feel is world class fundamental skills as a marine electrician/mechanic,” he said. “There is huge demand out there for this, with the opportunity to become highly skilled and specialized.

“I still want to teach, and eventually would like to be involved in a 'semester-at-sea' style program that is accessible to kids who may not have had the chance to be out on the water, and also includes a maritime trades element in the curriculum.”

Want to be a guide?: Newport Historical Society tours are expanding to meet demand

The cost of the marine systems program starting in the fall is about $25,700. Federal financial aid and other grants and scholarships are available.

Willis said the starting pay for marine systems graduates ranges from $25 to $30 per hour. He said he plans to work part-time and then enter the IYRS' 20-month Boatbuilding and Restoration Program. Local boat builders, he said, have told him marine systems plus BBR is a “highly desirable combination.”

“Nick’s story,” McCann said, “is typical in that most of our students are seeking to align a passion or interest to work with their hands with a way to earn a living or follow through on a life-long dream. In Nick’s case, he was initially looking to combine his love of teaching with his passion for sailing. After completing IYRS’s marine systems program, he is exploring other opportunities that he wasn’t aware of prior to enrollment.”
