The 38 Super Sport was one of Ocean's best-selling models ever. A total of 158 of these boats were built, and used models remained popular for many years after she went out of production in 1991. "Hook" is Hull number 150 of 158 built. Key to the popularity of the Ocean 38 SS was her handsome good looks and a potent combination of speed and open-water agility. Like all Ocean designs, she rides on a tapered, low-deadrise hull with moderate beam and cored hullsides. A pair of floorplans were offered in the 38 SS: "Hook" is the more popular two-stateroom arrangement (walkaround double berth in the bow stateroom / separate stall shower in the head) with the galley in the salon. One of the more appealing aspects of the Ocean 38 is her serviceable engineroom. Teak Cockpit deck and hatches removed and replaced with new FG deck and hatches.

The modern classic boat is designed as a true daysailer; the cockpit comfortably seats six people so family or friends can come along to enjoy a day on the water in style. At the same time the Eagle 38 can also easily be sailed single handed .

For ease of handling the jib winches are positioned within easy reach of the helmsman. Optionally the 38 can be equipped with electric powered jib winches. Combined with a powered captive mainsheet winch and electric halyard winch, this will make trimming and hoisting the sails of the 38 foot yacht as easy as pushing a button. The halyard winch is conveniently placed on the coach roof combined with the below deck mounted jib furler system ensuring hoisting or lowering your sails will never be a hassle.

The Eagle 38 is also built for performance. With its sleek design and state-of-the-art technology, this boat is sure to turn heads and provide a smooth and thrilling sailing experience.

The interior is light and airy with plenty of daylight and warm LED lights. The varnished mahogany furniture and ceiling in alcantara give the 38 an elegant and luxurious feel. The interior of the 38 ft sailboat offers sleeping space for three people. To complete the comfort of a daysailer, a toilet is convenient and neatly built in out of sight in the cabin.

The Eagle 38 can be personalized in many ways. Hull color, color of the Permateek deck and caulking, different wood finishes for the interior and by making your personal choice for the interior and exterior cushion fabric, you can design the Eagle 38 to your personal preferences. Exterior design

Length and beam on the waterline have been extended as far as possible to make the Oceanis 38 quick to cut through the water, while increasing stability.  She offers high-performance and habitability second to none on this size of cruiser.

Interior design

Almost everything is possible inside the Oceanis 38. There is wide scope for different combinations in organizing the interior spaces and woodwork ambiances. The choice of a separate shower compartment is popular in the three cabin version. A unique feature on this size of cruiser, the fore cabin’s bed head faces in the same direction as the boat. 

Open sailing

The Oceanis 38 rethinks the use of the boat, leaving the choice of its initial layout to the owner, while maintaining the potential to change arrangements at a later date. With the Daysailer, Weekender or Cruise, there are three ways to reorganize life on board the same boat.

Designed like a floating loft, this version of the Oceanis 38 does away with interior bulkheads in favour of a single room. The view is unobstructed and there is a stunning feeling of space. With equipment focussing on the essential, aft space for storage and an open cockpit, the Daysailer is open to everything. 

Whether she has a two or three cabin plan, the Weekender version of the Oceanis 38 offers the greatest evolving potential over time and is the yacht that offers the greatest choice of layout: open or closed cabins, separate shower, fitted galley, extra inside/outside table, helmsman's seats, etc. 

More conventional, the Cruiser version of the Oceanis 38 is equipped with a large galley facing the saloon and a bathroom with separate shower. It offers a choice between two or three fitted cabins. With the potential to evolve, the bulkhead can be removed from the fore cabin of this version to return that loft feeling.

A family-run business called Bavaria Yachts originally produced glass windows. Today, they make sailboats at a brand-new, cutting-edge facility in Giebelstadt, Germany. The company started producing boats in the 1970s and now turns out about 450 boats a year, ranging in size from 29 to 50 feet. Bavaria constructs a number of unique lines. The multi-cabin Holiday series cruise ships, which are destined for Mediterranean charter fleets, are given a lot of attention. Traditional aft cockpit sloops with fewer sleeping areas and a sizable master suite make up the Exclusive series. A center-cockpit on the 38 Ocean is designed for family cruising. In 1995, the first ships from Asia arrived in North America, and today, a charter fleet in the Pacific Northwest is using these vessels.

The business may not have the long history of some of its rivals, but among Europeans she is known for producing reliable, seaworthy boats. Two permanent Lloyd’s inspectors are paid for by Bavaria and are present to check each sailboat as she moves down the assembly process. Boats are therefore not just “made to Lloyd’s criteria,” but rather are given a Germanischer Lloyd A5 certificate, which includes the hull, rig, engine, electrical system, and locking mechanisms.

The J and J design studio, a relatively unknown company established in 1983 by brothers Jernej and Japec Jakopin, creates Bavaria yachts. More than 700 of their first yacht, the Elan 31, were made after she won the 3/4 Ton world championships. Following this, the company established Seaway, a boat engineering business that provides marketing, design, tooling, and prototyping services.

In cooperation with Bruce Farr, Doug Peterson, and the Jeanneau design team, J and J works with more than 20 production yards in Europe and has created boats for Jeanneau, Bavaria, and Dufour. At the 1997 Düsseldorf boat exhibition, three designs were named Boat of the Year.

The attractive lines of the Holiday and Exclusive models resemble numerous Swedish, Wauquiez, Baltic, and Swan yachts.

Because she has a center-cockpit configuration, the Ocean 38 Ocean has a distinctive appearance. Due to its large beam (13′ 2′′), which raises questions about inverse stability and upwind performance, However, she creates a roomy interior and improves early stability.

The sail area/displacement (SA/D) ratio is 17.8 and the displacement/length (D/L) ratio is 217, which are both acceptable values for the majority of coastal cruising situations. For what most people would consider ideal for blue-water cruising, the D/L is a little low.

The spade rudder and tail fin keel of the whale represent modern theories to increase lift and control. There are two different draught options for the boat: 5’1″ and 6’5″.

Logs of wood are transported into the wood shop and milled; workers in the lay-up process are given shopping carts full of numbered fibreglass sheets that have been computer-precut to certain sizes and premixed containers of resin to ensure that the lay-up is consistent.

The drawback of this rigorous strategy is that there is no room for customization. You can have any colour you want as long as it’s black, as Henry Ford once quipped.

The lay-up techniques are fairly simple. Powder-bonded glass mat and isopthalic resins make up the exterior skin. Below the waterline, the hull is made of solid fibreglass that has been alternately layered with layers of 15-ounce and 20-ounce Verotex woven roving to a thickness of 32 mm.

A 2-mm thick Kevlar layer reinforces the forward portion of the hull from the bow to the first bulkhead. Double layers of fibreglass that extend 12 inches on either side of the centerline from the bow to the rudderpost and a double lamination on the keel flange—both required by Lloyd’s—provide additional strength.

Solid fibreglass stringers and beams running amidships that are joined to the hull using S-glass further strengthen the hull. The engine bed is also laminated to the hull, and an engine bracket made of aluminium is glassed to the timbers of the engine bed so that engine bolts can pass through the metal piece and into the engine bed.

Before the deck is applied, all of the internal bulkheads, as well as the cupboards and closets, are bonded to the hull. Marine-grade plywood is used to reinforce areas near hatches.

Performance

The test boat had both furling main and jib, which simplifies sailhandling for cruising couples. The boat sailed comfortably to within 40° of the apparent wind at just less than 6 knots. With a properly balanced sailplan, most cruisers will find the boat manageable and comfortable.
