A green island in the Saronic Gulf

Agistri is a small pine-clad island, with pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters; it’s a popular destination for all those keen on outdoor sports such as hiking, cycling, sailing, kayaking or horse riding. The place is ideal for those of you who wish to take a break from your daily routine, and enjoy some peace and quiet, long walks in the countryside, great food and lovely beaches. Since ancient times, Megalochori (the island capital) has been a safe haven for ships which carried goods and supplies to its harbour. Over the ages, Agistri shared the history of neighbouring Aegina Island. Legend has it that it was part of the kingdom of Aiakos of Aegina, and it is believed that modern-day Agistri was ancient Kekryfaleia, known to have been an ally of Aegina during the Trojan War.   There are three villages on the island: Megalochori, Limenaria, and Skala. Visit them, get to know the local traditions, and taste delicious local dishes. Stroll along the island’s picturesque little alleys, visit the traditional coffee houses and the windmill.

DISCOVER THE ISLAND

Megalochori

The island capital is a charming little town where you will find several hotels, tavernas and popular beaches. Its natural harbour offers berths to flying dolphins and ferry boats. Skala is the island’s second harbour, on the NE shores. During the summer, there are bus routes connecting all villages and most of the beaches, so if you don’t have a car, fret not, hop on the bus!

Make sure you visit:

  • Zoodochos Pigi Cathedral and St. George’s Church.
  • The single windmill of the island, with the date 1812 carved on it.
  • The ruins of an ancient quarry and cist graves.
  • Metopi, an islet which used to be Agistri’s vineyard.
  • Limenaria, (4.5 km S), the island’s third village, a traditional hamlet with a few houses built among the pine trees.
  • The lake on Aponisos location, near Limenaria.

Aponisos islet, which is separated from Agistri by a narrow strip of sea; and Dorousa islet, with the picturesque chapel of Profitis Ilias, on the hilltop. They are both facing the SW shores of Agistri.

Agistri, the Unspoiled Saronic Island that Gets to Your Heart

by Violeta Matei | Greek Islands , Saronic Islands

Agistri is a tiny island in the Argo-Saronic Gulf, located close to its larger sibling, Aegina. Also known as Angistri or Agkistri, this small Greek island counts only three villages, Skala, Megalochori (Milos) and Limenaria. It is an island where you come for the beach, the sun, and the good food.

I fell in love with the unspoiled Agistri at first sight, so I’m keen on returning for a longer stay. If I were to set my home away from home to work remotely, I’d choose Agistri, the pine-covered island that looks peaceful and quiet and welcomes you with beaches, hiking trails and fresh and tasty food.

How To Get to Agistri

How to spend one day on agistri, enjoy swimming, snorkeling and beach time, agistri island walks & hikes, agistri kayaking, bike or scooter rental, boat rental, scuba diving on agistri, what to bring with you on agistri, where to stay on agistri.

Unlike Moni island , Agistri is on the regular ferry route from Piraeus. It is the next stop from Aegina.

There are daily ferries and Flying Dolphins from Athens to Agistri, departing from Piraeus, Gate 8. The journey from Piraeus to Agistri takes one hour, give or take, depending on the type of boat you choose.

Agistri also has ferry and speed boat connections with Aegina, departing from Aegina Town. Aegina ferries need only 10-15 minutes to get to Agistri. The frequency of the ferries depends on the season, so make sure you check out ferry schedules and timetables before planning your travel.

agistri blue ferry

If you set base on Aegina, then you must spare one full day to visit Agistri. That’s what I did. As it was August, there were frequent connections between the two islands, so I was even able to pick the most convenient time.

Your day on Angistri could look like this:

  • take a morning ferry from Aegina Town to Skala
  • have breakfast and a coffee in Skala, take photos of the beautiful white church with blue roof
  • walk along the coastal promenade that leads to Megalochori
  • choose one of the beaches alongside this walk, grab a sunbed and enjoy some beach and swimming time
  • have lunch at one of the tavernas in the area (Yialos is a good one)
  • take a boat back to Aegina from Megalochori (I took a Flying Dolphin)

If you don’t want to spend time at the beach and to swim, you’ll have enough time to visit also Limenaria, the third settlement on the island. Keep in mind, though, that you’ll need to get back to either Megalochori or Skala to jump on a boat to take you back to Aegina.

Best Things to Do on Agistri

This isn’t one of the Greek islands that are famous for their beach parties and nightlife. Anyway, our nightlife everywhere in the world is long gone since the beginning of the pandemics.

Agistri is best for swimming, sunbathing, snorkeling and hiking. If I were to write a book, I’d set base on Agistri. Everyday I’d go for a long swim, I’d have my breakfast and my Greek frappe at my favorite taverna and I’d watch the sea changing colors and the white boats passing.

If you prefer animated beaches with lots of people, beach bars, music and water sports, Skala Beach is for you.

If you prefer silence and privacy, take a few steps along the coastal promenade or head over the opposite direction to find the most famous beach on Agistri, Chalkidia Beach. Nevertheless, this beach could be crowded, too in high-season.

The shoreline that links Skala to Megalochori is scattered with small beaches, sand patches and coves. The vegetation is scarce, so don’t expect to find natural shadow. Make sure you wear sunscreen and a large hat, in order to avoid sunburn.

The succulents have incredible shades of green and yellow. There’s no natural shade, though.

You can choose a private spot to set base for your day at the beach or you can grab a sunbed and an umbrella at one of the tavernas alongside the road.

Beach on Greek Island

Many tavernas on Agistri have their own sunbeds and umbrellas to offer their paying customers.

I highly recommend Yialos Taverna, where I had delicious tzatziki and a fabulous Greek salad.

Agistri Island – Yialos Taverna Beach

This is another tiny beach with umbrellas, sunbeds and a wooden deck to the water.

Walking from Skala to Megalochori (Milos) takes about 15-20 minutes, as there are less than 3km between the two settlements. However, you’ll probably need much more time to cover this distance, as you’ll want to stop for photos and maybe for a swim and a snack.

Turquiose sea around Agistri

I still can’t believe the colors of the water around Agistri

The only natural shadow you’re going to get on this Agistri road

If you prefer hiking, you can use Google Maps to get from Skala to Megalochori on dirt trails. This is a good idea during spring or fall, when temperatures are milder. August is not a good month to take this route, as there’s barely any shadow. At 300 meters altitude, with no water nearby, it can get too hot to feel comfortable.

I love kayaking! I did it in Corfu and it was such an experience! I wish I knew kayaking was available on Agistri before spending half of my time there swimming and snorkeling. This is yet another reason to get back to this lovely Saronic island, this time for a longer stay.

If you want to visit the island without having to walk or use buses, you can rent a bike, a motorbike or a scooter. The roads are good on Agistri and there aren’t too many cars, so you’ll feel at ease riding your scooter.

Renting a boat is a great way to explore the coast, to swim and to enjoy quality snorkeling time. If you do it, remember to ask for the coordinates of the Avantis III wreck that lies on the bottom of the sea at 18-45 meters deep. You can see the ship through your snorkeling mask.

The Avantis III wreck is one of the most popular scuba diving spots on Agistri. It is suitable for all levels of diving certifications.

The clear waters and the rocky shores make Agistri a great scuba diving destination.

If you come for one day only, bring your swimwear, a hat, sunscreen, snorkel and a smartphone (preferably with a Greek sim card to be able to use the maps without paying a fortune). A photo camera is also a must. If you go for a scuba diving and boat trip, bring your underwater camera, if you have one.

Should you choose to stay a few days on this scenic Greek island , bring along some good hiking shoes and a tripod for your camera.

The coast line between Skala and Megalochori is scattered with small hotels and holiday apartments. Here are a few of them, just in case you want to stay on Agistri for a few days for some hiking and sunbathing.

Hotel Amaryllis – located a very short walk from the port, this hotel is right in front of the beautiful sandy beach of Megalochori. The hotel offers Continental  breakfast, but also full English or Irish breakfast. The sandy beach and the shallow water are perfect for children.

Check out Hotel Amaryllis room prices and availability here . You’ll find below a few photos of the hotel with its restaurant, and of the beach in front.

Hotel Oasis is bigger and it also has a swimming pool and a poolside bar. It is located on the sandy beach of Skala, very close to the center of the village where you can find lots of tavernas and shops.

Hotel Anagennisis – also located on the beachfront in Skala, this hotel is a good choice for a short stay. If you want to see room rates for your desired period, click here . This hotel doesn’t offer breakfast, but there are many tavernas nearby, so you won’t have a problem to find coffee and food at any time of the day.

15 Best Things to Do in Agistri (Greece)

Less than an hour from the port of Piraeus by “Flying Dophin”, Agistri is a small island in the Saronic Gulf.

Agistri is tiny, and it takes just ten minutes to drive from the northern village of Megalochori to Limenaria in the far south.

In between are unpopulated hills where wild oregano, figs and lemons grow among the pine forests.

Agistri’s coast is rocky and trimmed with cliffs and dense woodland that comes right down to the sea.

Some of the best places to bathe are just rocky platforms where you can lower yourself into glowing pools of clear water, but there’s a family-friendly sandy beach in Skala.

On land you can try horse riding or rent a bicycle, while by water there are kayak adventures, wreck dives and speedboat trips to a host of destinations on the Saronic Gulf.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Agistri :

1. Aponisos Beach

Aponisos Beach, Agistri

Not a beach in the traditional sense, Aponisos Beach is a private bathing area on rocks with ladders and steps down to crystal clear waters.

The sea at Aponisos is sheltered by the indented coast, as well as the private island no more than 200 metres offshore.

Entrance costs €5, and this includes the price of a sun lounger, sun shade and a drink.

You can borrow an air mattress or tube to drift on the water, while the fish restaurant by the beach is rated as one of the best on the island.

Don’t forget to bring snorkelling gear as these crystalline waters abound with sea life.

Skala, Agistri

Together with Megalochori, Skala is Agistri’s main port, handling traffic from Piraeus and the neighbouring island of Aegina.

Skala is also the most upmarket settlement on the island, with its fair share of accommodation, complemented by tavernas, cafes bars and even a nightclub on the edge of the village.

If you’re dining out in Agistri, chances are you’ll find yourself in Skala, and one of the delicacies you have to try is barbecued octopus.

Skala also has the shallowest and best appointed beach on Agistri, so is the destination of choice for families.

3. Dragonera Beach

Dragonera Beach, Agistri

Just off the road from Megalochori to Limenaria, Dragonera Beach is a pebble bay framed by pine-capped rocks on the west coast.

The beach has a single row of sun loungers and sun shades, rented out by a little kiosk on the shore.

This is the only sign of tourism at Dragonera: Behind are uninhabited coniferous hills, and if you’re feeling adventurous you could wade around the rocks to the north to find a quiet place to bathe.

The sea at Dragonera is a captivating turquoise colour, with rippling surf that should be safe for all-comers.

4. Megalochori

Megalochori, Agistri

The island’s capital, Megalochori is still no more than a village in size, with a population of little more than 500. Alongside Skala it is the settlement most geared towards tourism.

In Ancient Greece the harbour in Megalochori was used as a naval base, while today it’s a simple fishing port with nets piled up on the quayside.

Ferries also arrive from Aegina, as well as “Flying Dophins” from Piraeus.

Allow some time to poke around its whitewashed alleys, bright with fuchsia flowers, and track down the village’s landmark, a windmill dating to 1812. Finish with an ice-cold frappé at a cafe.

5. Chalikiada Beach

Chalikiada Beach, Agistri

On the east coast, Chalikiada Beach is a pebble cove guarded by high cliffs.

You’ll want to pause over the view before you step down the beach, to see Aegina and Moni Island in the distance.

Thanks to its more intimate setting, Chalikiada Beach is the only beach in the Agistri and Aegina area to cater to naturists.

The shore pitches quite steeply into the water, and the currents may sometimes be too much for non-swimmers, but will be fine for everyone else.

It’s best to come prepared to this remote beach, but if you need anything Skala is only a few hundred metres away.

It’s not unusual to see a small village of tents on the beach as people often camp out here in the summer.

6. Limenaria

Chapel near Limenaria

A small tangle of lanes bear in the south of Agistri, Limenaria is a trip worth making for the scenic 10-minute drive that gives you panoramas of the Saronic Gulf and islands.

Limenaria is embedded in a valley and you’ll see the village from above before zigzagging down the slope.

This sleepy little place has just a single taverna, which comes highly recommended.

The village bursts into life on 7 July when the golden-domed Church of Agia Kyriaki is the centre of a folk festival.

Moments to the east is the tiny port of Mariza, where there’s a pool ladder on the rocks for the clear waters below.

7. Water Sports

Kayaking

One of the great things about the Saronic Gulf is that the sea is sheltered from the infamous Meltemi Wind, and when the weather’s calm it’s possible to navigate its waters with manpower alone.

In Skala you can get in touch with the adventure sports company, Go Kayak Greece, which arranges kayak tours with qualified guides who have in-depth knowledge of the island, its nature and history.

These can be half-day or full-day trips, or shorter excursions.

A popular destination is the small island of Metopi, between Agistri and Aegina.

There you can visit the little Theodori chapel and on evening trips you’ll watch the sun setting over the Saronic Gulf.

8. Church of Agioi Anargyroi

Church of Agioi Anargyroi

A 20th-century church for the 3rd-century Saints Cosmas and Damian, the cruciform Agioi Anargyroi is one of Agistri’s most photographed buildings.

The church is reflected on the water in Skala, and its main dome and apse are painted light blue.

Like all of the religious buildings on Agistri, it’s a sight to savour from the outside, apart from during the feast of St Cosmas and Damian, on 1 July when it’s the focus of a folk celebration.

On the evergreen slopes between Megalochori and Skala, Metochi is a minuscule but endearing residential village with just one taverna.

If you’re on Agistri, you could make the walk or drive up to Metochi for vistas of the north coast.

The village has some of the oldest buildings on Agistri, most whitewashed, with terracotta roofs, bougainvillea blossoms and blue painted windows and doors.

In its elevated position, Metochi is a good springboard for hikes in Agistri’s coniferous landscape, with the scent of wild herbs on the air.

10. Church of Panagia

Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, this church rests on a rocky podium and is an exhilarating vantage point for north of the island.

Getting there on foot from Skala requires a little effort, and hundreds of worshippers conquer the slope every 15 August for the Assumption.

The Church of Panagia will likely be closed when you come, but most visitors come for the views of Skala and the Island of Aegina.

The church’s whitewashed Cycladic-style walls and campanile are stand out against the blues of the sky and sea.

11. Skala Beach

Skala Beach, Agistri

The favourite beach for families on Agistri, Skala Beach is barely 100 metres from the village’s harbour and in view of the blue dome of Agioi Anargyroi.

The location is one of the best things going for Skala Beach as within seconds there’s a good choice of shops and places to eat.

The other advantage is the gentle, shallow water that smaller children will be able to play in.

Skala Beach is also “organised” and there are sun loungers and parasols to rent.

12. Boat Trips

Agistri Boat

Not far from the Peloponnese mainland and surrounded by other Saronic islands, Agistri is in a prime location if you want to see the best of the Saronic Gulf.

Operating out of the harbour at Megalochori is the Jamaica Speed Boat, providing swift transfers to any number of places nearby.

The company serves Ancient Epidaurus, home to one of the ancient world’s greatest theatres, the picturesque and traditional island of Hydra, the Corinth Canal and Poros, an island escape for cultural figures like Henry Miller and Nobel Prize-winning poet Giorgos Seferis.

Alternatively you could make for local beauty spots, to snorkel, paddleboard and swim in shimmering blue pools.

13. Horse Riding

Horse Riding

The deserted southern half of Agistri is primed for outdoor adventure, and you can now journey through its pine forest and fruit groves on horseback.

Aponisos Horse Riding is in the southwest of the island and caters to both children and adults.

Youngsters can get to know the basics of horse riding at a lesson in a safe environment.

More experienced kids, and adults can also break out on a trek along the coast and around the salt lake in Agistri’s hinterland.

A 90-minute ride will cost €25 per person.

Diving

Off the southwest of Agistri are sparkling waters with amazing water clarity, with no fewer than nine separate dive sites.

These might be the wreck of the Avantis III container ship or an underwater canyon off the Island of Dorousa concealing a small sunken vessel.

The one dive centre on Agistri is Interdive at Megalochori, run by former commercial divers.

Interdive sails to its dive sites on the wooden Astrolavos yacht and offers free refreshments on board.

Newcomers to diving can study for PADI certification, while seasoned divers can earn more advanced qualifications.

Kids can also be introduced to the equipment and techniques on a “Bubblemaker” course.

Aegina

Five kilometres east of Agistri, Aegina is served by one of the regular ferries sailing from Megalochori.

If possible you should visit with a moped or rental car as there are some spellbinding sights to track down.

High on the east coast, overlooking the island, is the Doric Temple of Aphaia from the end of the 6th century BC. The once magnificent pediment is missing from the ruins, which are otherwise almost complete, but there’s a faithful reconstruction at the site’s museum.

A matter of seconds across the narrow strait from the port town of Perdika is Moni Island, roamed by wild peacocks and the scene of one of the best beaches in the region.

Even though Monis Island Beach is just a rocky ledge, the landward-facing water has a pure aquamarine pool that must be seen to be believed.

Skala area : “To Agistri” is a very beautiful tavern-ouzeri with fresh local fish and seafood.   The restaurant “Alter Ego” is perfect for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Here you can try the famous Greek Lobster spaghetti. The grill house “Nea Lagoudera” for meat lovers.  The Italian restaurant “Avli” with a rich menu and traditional Italian pizza.  The grill house “Gyrokomeio” for tasty and economic Greek fast food.  The tavern “Toxotis” where you can taste a homemade Greek traditional food.

Megaloxori area:  The tavern “Mandraki” offers homemade cooked food.  The café “Kouros” for delicious breakfast, sweets, and drinks during the day.  The restaurant “Castro” with an unusual architecture in the form of a fortress and a breathtaking view of the sea.

Nightlife. Yes, this small island also has an entertaining night for all ages. If you prefer clubs, the Taboo in Agistri and the Castro in Megalochori with Dj’s and unique cocktails is a good choice.  For a more romantic pastime, you can head over to the beach area, there are bars with music and tables right on the beach.

Shopping . Do not expect great shopping here, but handmade jewelry deserves your attention.  Also, you can find little shops with different souvenirs and various sweets with pistachios.  On the islands, there are several supermarkets if you needed and ice-cream shops.

Agistri certainly cannot be called “a boring island”.  It’s far from it.  Such a small lush island, with so many things to do, and if you’re on a budget, then this is the perfect solution for a quick getaway from Athens.

12 Reasons to Fall in Love with Agistri Island

Agistri Island (or Angistri or Agkistri) is the smallest island in the Argo-Saronic Gulf. Other islands in the same group include Hydra , Spetses, Poros , Aegina , Salamina , and Dokos .

It is very easy to fall in love with Agistri Greece, a small, low-key paradise of an island only an hour away from Athens. From the exotic beach Aponisos in the south to the scattered traditional tiny villages, Agistri island is a wonderful place for a day trip or a long weekend.

Aponisos beach with yachts and swimmers in Agistri island

Agistri Island’s coastline has many beautiful bays and gulfs while its land is almost completely covered by a sweet-scented pine forest. Agistri is not a cosmopolitan island. But It is a perfect Greek island for those who seek contact with nature, as it is blessed with an explosion of natural beauty.

How to Get to Agistri Island

Agistri island: the Megalochori port

To get to Agistri Greece you need to take the boat from Piraeus, Athens’ main port. There are catamaran or flying dolphins that take only passengers and get you to Agistri’s capital town, Megalochori, in about 55′.

If you take the slow boat (which takes about 1.5 hours and can carry cars/bikes as well) you arrive at Skala port. Book your ferry transfer with FerryScanner and get the best prices in the market with no hidden fees.

Agistri island: Skala village and sea

From the ports, you can take the local buses, use taxis, rent a bicycle or a car, and start exploring Agistri. As Agistri is only 14 square km surface, if you are an avid hiker, you can hike a large portion of this beautiful island.

Where Best to Stay on Agistri Island

Saronis Hotel in Agistri island

Saronis Hotel Agistri ( mid-range, adults only ): This is a wonderful hotel that feels like you are staying in …Mykonos in the Cyclades! With outstanding breakfast and nearby the seafront and restaurants.

Aktaion Beach Boutique Hotel & Spa ( family-friendly, mid-range ): A fantastic seafront hotel with a very nice sandy beach nearby, perfect for children, swimming pools, and a great breakfast choice.

Hotel Abatis ( budget , family-friendly) is a marvelous, peaceful property, with a superb breakfast, up on a hill with a beautiful view of the sea on one side and pine trees on the other.

Best Things to Do on Agistri Island

1. megalochori port.

yacht rent agistri

Megalochori  (also known as Milos), is Agistri’s capital town and port with an authentic and less touristic character.

If you arrive in Megalochori port, don’t skip walking its small alleys. You will be happily surprised by the picturesque cobblestones with two-story houses and the traditionally preserved mansions with beautifully flowered yards.

yacht rent agistri

If you feel like tasting some good local traditional Greek food, ask around for the “ Konaki ” or the “ Sailor” taverns, you will not be disappointed.

A lovely hotel to stay in Megalochori is The M ilos (family-friendly, breakfast, swimming pool, mid-range) situated just above the picturesque port of and offers beautiful views across the Saronic Gulf.

2. Metochi Village and the Panagia Church

Metochi village in Agistri island

If you like heights and great sea vistas visit/hike to Metochi , a small village between Megalochori and Skala. Metochi is a tiny village with only a few narrow streets, rusty old houses, and beautiful sea views across Skala.

yacht rent agistri

There is a short trail towards Metochi and right before you get to the village, on the right side of it there is a beautiful chapel that I visited. I always check to see if the chapels are open as I love to visit and check the icons and the decorations of the church.

3. Skala Seaside Village and Beach

Skala is the most advanced settlement on Agistri island, with beach bars and tourist facilities, just 10 minutes away by bike time – 2 km – from Megalochori.

yacht rent agistri

It is a lively place with two organized beaches, one sandy and one with pebbles, that gather a lot of people and families, and many visitors find it a great base for trips to the rest of the island.

I love strolling the sandy part of Skala Beach to the impressive landmark, the large white church of Agios Dimitrios with the blue dome.

Agistri island: Copa Cabana seaside cafe

If you stay in Skala, try the breakfast at «Copa Cabana» , with many tasty pancake options or more traditional choices like Greek yogurt with fruit and honey. I always have a coffee there as well, Greek coffee usually or espresso, I am not a frappe fun.

Agistri island a dish with food

Perhaps it is noon and it is time for your meal. Taste Greek “fast food” options, gyros, and souvlaki. Go to “Gyrokomeion” or “Gyrobank” shops and get full of some of the best gyros in Agistri.

 Agistri island

Plaka is also where we rented our bikes (€5 each, in good condition, mine had a basket!). We biked for 16 km in total but it wasn’t an even road, it had a lot of steep uphills and equal downhills. So, if you rent a bike, you have to be certain that you can deal with this kind of terrain – especially if you are visiting in the summer. Although I was complaining about the uphills and had to stop and walk at times, I didn’t regret it as the views while you are biking are magnificent.

4. Skliri Beach

 Agistri island: Skliri beach

Staying on the east side of Agistri along the coast and towards the south, you reach the lush green and organized (rocky) beach of Skliri. If you are visiting Agkistri with your partner seek the “lovers’ street” in Skliri, where couples take selfie photos.

Alkyoni restaurant in Agistri

Fish Tip: For fresh fish with an amazing sea view inside the pine forest take a break at the Alkyoni Tavern.

5. Chalikiada Beach

Popular Chalikiada beach, Agistri

If you head towards the south through a dreamy route of about 500 meters in the pines, you will find a natural deep creek with pebbles. This is the enchanting Chalikiada beach with unbelievable clear waters and beautiful views of Aegina Island.

The Chalikiada beach is not organized so you better have some water or food with you. And a hat for the sun!

Two of the best things to do on Chalikiada rocky beach are snorkeling and ..nudism! It is a popular spot for nude swimmers and free campers, so be prepared.

6. Dragonera Beach

Dragonera beach from a drone

The two Dragonera beaches (small and big) feature exotic azure waters and you can get there by crossing the dense pine forest on the west side of Agistri Island.

yacht rent agistri

On the left of the beach, there is an outdoor canteen with some basic food and drink options like souvlaki, sodas, beer, or water.

I am not particularly fond of this beach because it gets a bit crowded, and the last time I was there I stepped on an urchin and was quite unhappy for the rest of the day! However, the place is gorgeous, so don’t mind me, go there and just be mindful of the urchins! Or buy mesh shoes to walk in the sea.

7. Limenaria Village

Agia Varvara Church and our bicycles!

Just before you get to Limenaria village and the steep downhill to Aponisos, you come across the Byzantine chapel of Agios Nikolaos, where we made a much-needed stop to drink some water!

The chapel is very old, the first one built on the island and it is protected by the Archaeological Service.

yacht rent agistri

Limenaria is on the southeast part of Agistri and is one of the most traditional settlements on the island. You will love walking its cobblestone alleys, passing by stone old houses, cafes, and traditional ovens where you can smell the freshly baked goodies all over the village.

8. Mariza Tiny Rocky Shoreline

yacht rent agistri

Mariza is not exactly a beach but a platform for diving into the deep pristine waters of the sea. Access is via a path that goes from the village of Limenaria to Mariza Bay or by boat.

9. Lekani Lake

Agistri Island and Lekani wetland

If you travel towards the east, past the very beautiful Byzantine church of Agios Nikolaos you get to Agistri Lake. The lake sits in a dazzling water landscape in the heart of a pine-covered paradise, between the village of Limenaria and the islet of Aponisos.

In the spring, the colorful moorland (which used to be a salt lake, in the past) fills with numerous species of birds.

10. Aponissos Beach

As soon as you leave behind the Lekani Lake of Agistri and through a wonderful dense pine forest you arrive at Aponisos.

turquoise Aponissos beach and rocks on Agistri island

Aponisos is simply stunning! It is an exotic islet, joined by a small strip of land with the rest of Agistri island. The islet is private so you need to pay an entrance fee of five euros 5€ (inclusive of an umbrella and a sunbed). The beach is organized and stays open until the 15th of October .

turquoise Aponissos beach and rocks on Agistri island

We stayed mostly on the open sea side of it and enjoyed one of the best days on a Greek island. The waters were slightly cool but not in an intimidating way, so I swam for some time in the azure crystal clear waters.

yacht rent agistri

There were ducks swimming nearby and peacocks walking freely and I could hear some hens laying eggs nearby, but I couldn’t see them.

Evgenia in Agistri island on a swing

Aponisos is considered the best place in Agistri to see the sun setting in the waters of the Saronic Gulf and needless to say, this is my favorite beach on the island.

11. Boat Visit to Islets of Dorousa, Metopi, Kyra

Another great thing you can do is to get on a small boat from Megalochori or Skala, do the round of Agistri, and visit some of its beautiful islets:

The other side of the Aponissos beach with umbrellas

The small island of Dorousa is located just half a nautical mile across from Aponisos. At the top of the island, there is the chapel of Prophet Elias, built in the 18th century. The island has archaeological findings and preserved walls, and its shores are rocky with deep waters, ideal for scuba diving. Near the shores of the island, there is the wreck of the cargo ship “Avantis III,” which occurred on November 19, 2004.

yacht rent agistri

Metopi Island spans a nautical mile in length merely a nautical mile from the charming port of Scala. It is worth visiting the picturesque small beach with white sand and tranquil azure waters. Atop the island, the chapel of Agioi Theodoroi stands alongside a scattering of vineyards and a petite lake characterized by its reddish hues.

Kyra The uninhabited islet of Kyra is situated to the northwest of Agistri. In ancient times, it was known as “Pityonisos” due to its abundant pine tree forests. The islet features a small beach on its southeast side and another on its western side and is home to a few goats and several rabbits.

12. Agistri Local Delicacies

onion pie Folegandros island food

Agistri farmers produce retsina, olive oil, olives, figs, oregano, thyme, almonds, pine honey, fresh fish, and seafood are caught daily. The veggies are all grown locally so, any salad, local pies with herbs, grilled octopus, or any fish, as well as doughnuts and pancakes, will make you very very happy.

What Island Hopping Can I Do from Agistri?

From Agistri Island, you can take the small boats that get you to Aegina Island .

Or you can take the ferry to Methana, Peloponnese, and visit the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus , where performances take place in July and August.

Or you can go on a sailing guided tour from Athens:

Aegina or Agistri?

yacht rent agistri

There is no fast answer if you are asking which island to choose, Aegina or Agistri. If you have time, go to both. Aegina has more sites to visit such as the Aphaia Temple, the large monasteries, the Medieval Paleochora, and the gorgeous Perdika village, and is more touristically developed.

Agistri is much smaller than Aegina but greener, and quieter. Hiking is great on both islands.
