AIRSTREAM HUNTER VINTAGE COLLECTION

Google High Res Photos:  https://photos.app.goo.gl/VTtSzEyJCp2aMgJp6

Inside, you'll find a spacious and cozy interior, with all-new cabinets, flooring, cushions, and curtains that perfectly complement the original, freshly painted walls. There's ample storage, with a pantry, closet, linen, and drawers. The drop-down table with a Formica top serves as a dining area, and the rear bathroom features all-new cabinets, toilet, faucets, and a restored fiberglass tub/shower and sink that look brand new. The mattress is new and super comfy, doubling as a sofa for lounging during the day.

The kitchen is well-equipped with a new gas cooktop and toaster oven for all your cooking needs. The large new refrigerator runs on both electric and propane. The gas heater will keep you warm during chilly nights, and the new plumbing, black and grey holding tanks, and water tank ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey.

The exterior of this Airstream is just as impressive, with all-original aluminum body panels, new seals on all windows that are in perfect working condition, a brand-new awning, and a front A-frame and rear bumper in excellent condition. The frame has new axles and is rust-free, and the sub-floor and belly pan have been replaced and are in great shape.

As for the mechanics, the trailer weighs 3000 lbs and has one new axle, new tires, brakes, and bearings. The emergency breakaway cable and safety chains are new, and the hitch receiver size is 2 inches. All signal and marker lights, as well as the trailer wire configuration, are new, and it comes with a weight distribution hitch (EZ hitch) for easy towing.

The electrical system, solar panels, batteries, invertor, and converter are all new, as is the sound system, which includes a CD player. The LP/propane system, including the tanks, hoses, and regulator, are also new.

If you're interested in this beautiful vintage Airstream, please contact us at  [email protected]  for a virtual tour or to schedule a showing.

1967 Airstream Overlander Land Yacht Travel Trailer 23' Remodeled Fireplace Bath

1967 Airstream Overlander Land Yacht Travel Trailer 23' Remodeled Fireplace Bath

Apple Valley, California

Model Overlander Land Yacht

Nicely decorated and homey vintage 1967 Airstream Overlander Land Yacht Travel Trailer, 23' ft. (26' - 27'ft total length) in pre-owned condition with some upgrades. DINETTE/LIVING ROOM AREA When you enter the door, the 1st thing you see is the black and gray electric fireplace, green faux plant, and glass window with black and gold French design border and blinds. On the right side is the living room/dining room area, square table with 2 gray leather chairs, somewhat worn, gray and chrome detail, sconce lighting on back of each chair, a lamp, window with screen, no glass but metal panel on the outside, black and gold french design border, and clock. Because there's a glass window by the entrance door, the living room area looks like it has windows on both sides. In this area, ceiling above has chrome vent with knobs, not quite sure if this is air conditioning or not. KITCHEN Left side of entrance door is the kitchen area. One side has dark reddish brown wood cabinets with silver knobs, stainless steel double kitchen sink, overlooking glass window, and flip-top kitchen range and vent above, drawers and cabinet space down below. The other side has a clean Sanyo refrigerator and an Emerson microwave at the bottom, and on top, counter space and 19" Samsung flat screen TV, mounted so you could swivel and move it. Both sides of the kitchen has overhead storage space in white, and on the ceiling, sunroof and round ceiling light. BEDROOM/SLEEPING AREA Door with oval window separates the kitchen and the bedroom/sleeping area. The bedroom area has 2 beds, one on each side, with framed picture art, Sue Orman's Orca painting on one side, deco print on the other side, Bovril's woman golfer. The beds seem to be cushiony thick sponge type of material. The side with orca painting has a small table by the glass window, and square white wall sconce. The other side has a metal panel that looks like a blocked off former window. Both sides have storage space, both underneath the beds and above overhead storage space. On the ceiling is round heater by Thermador and a square fan. BATHROOM Because color of bathroom is turquoise blue mint green, it seems to be the original bathroom for this Airstream with some modifications. One side of the bathroom area has mirror, sink, ornate gold-toned metal faucet. The other side has toilet with bottom foot step-on flush, and shower tub made of metal; the shower head is missing so you would need to purchase it from Home Depot or Lowes. There's a window in the bathroom but it's plastic and not glass. No door separating bathroom and sleeping area. A round ceiling light is above the entrance. OUTER SHELL Outside shell show normal signs of wear from usage and age, water spots and indentations and scratches here and there and some minor waving, which you can see on picture 1 above tires. Some of you may think this is normal for vintage item of this age; some of you may want to give it a shiny polish. There is a metal awning on the outside but no canopy. The door has two knobs, the top one with lock and key works fine, but the one down below that you twist is a little tricky so may need to fiddle a bit with it. There's also a screen door on the other side of the main door. Tires are Good Year, and they look relatively new, like they've all been changed recently, all four of them. This Airstream travel trailer was purchased from a friend of a friend who collects vintage cars, and according to them, everything is in working condition. We haven't been able to test anything out because we have no way of hooking it up, so selling the item as is. The travel trailer looks previously lived in with all the decorations and electrical plugs and appliances, etc. We don't know is its water capacity, how many gallons of water the trailer holds. We are describing everything in detail as much as possible and with lots of pictures. Title is free and clear, we'll give you the pink slip and the keys at time of pick-up. SHIPPING Local Pick-up only. Buyer is responsible for picking up the item. Item is located in Apple Valley, CA the high desert area of Southern California, 45 minutes from from Big Bear, or about 1/3 point between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, off the 15 freeway. SHIPPING NOTE (I have nothing to do with U-Ship. eBay automatically put U-Ship in the listing, and I can't seem to take it off of my eBay listing. A quick Yelp review shows U-Ship has a very bad reputation and low rating, so please do your due diligence on that company) Please be advised eBay no longer permits Paypal payment for cars and autos (but they allow paypal payment for deposit only) So payment would be bank cashier's check after the initial $500 Paypal deposit. If you have any questions, please contact me via eBay's My Messages first and then we'll go on from there. Thank you. 1) 23' ft body length. 2) 26' - 27' ft. total length 3) Electrical Fireplace 4) Clean Sanyo Refrigerator, black interior 5) Emerson Microwave 6) 19" Samsung TV 7) Dinette with Leather Chairs, need cleaning 8) Dual Stainless Steel Kitchen Sink 9) Flip-Top Oven Range with Air Vent 10) 2 Beds 11) Heater: Yes, Thermador in sleeping area 12) Turquoise/Mint Green Bathroom May be Original to this Airstream 13) Lots of overhead storage space 14) Lots of electrical plug outlets 15) 4 Relatively New GoodYear Tires (ST225 75R151 for trailer service only) 16) Air Conditioning: Unknown but Possible (please see picture#5) 17) Fans on ceiling 18) Water Capacity: Unknown 19) Needs Shower Head 20) Outside awning but no canopy 21) Front and Back windows have metal panels on the outside that open and close 22) Sunroof

Wallace Byam, Airstream s founder, was practically born a traveler. As a child he traveled extensively with his grandfather, who led a mule train in Oregon. Later, his grandfather acquired a herd of sheep and teenage Wally became the shepherd, living in a two-wheeled donkey cart outfitted with a kerosene cookstove, a sleeping bag, and wash pail. These early experiences undoubtedly contributed to the direction his life would eventually take. He first built a travel trailer in 1923 in response to poorly-designed trailer plans he found in a magazine. He improved on the flawed design by dropping the floor down between the wheels and raising the ceiling height so that it was possible to stand upright inside the trailer. He wrote a magazine article for Popular Mechanics on how to build the roomy trailer for under $100, and the response was so enthusiastic that Wally began selling plans, complete trailer kits and even finished trailers from his California home. By 1930, he was a full-time builder of travel trailers and soon trademarked the Airstream name. The first production model, the Clipper, was introduced on January 17, 1936. The Clipper and subsequent models were truly revolutionary, with a monocoque frame and riveted aluminum body that incorporated aircraft construction methods. They were aerodynamic with a stylish, contemporary look, and were extremely popular. Airstream was the only trailer maker (of more than 300) to survive the depression, but was forced to halt produ

1976 26' Airstream International Overlander Land Yacht. In 2015, new shocks, brakes, tires, wood floors, side marker lights. Gutted to be used as a mobile pop-up shop. The air conditioner works (the unit is not new, but not sure if it's original). The only issue that we are aware of is there are two small leaks one near the front and one in the rear. We removed the holding tanks as we used it for a pop-up shop.

Airstream Renovation Tour: Before and After

After months and months (and months!) of pouring our days and nights into this renovation we are finally finished!

Both the interior and exterior of our 1972 Airstream Sovereign Land Yacht came to us in pretty pristine shape - eight track and all!

It was so loved and taken care of by the family that owned it before us that we wanted to make sure we did the renovation right. We owed that much to them at least.

As we’ve talked about before, we had lots of reasons for downsizing from our 37’ 5th wheel to a vintage Airstream . The biggest being that we fell in love with boondocking (camping without hookups) and wanted an RV that was built from the ground up with that in mind. I think it’s safe to say that Airstreams have always been built with the goal of exploring off the beaten path, even if ours did need some upgrades for true off the grid living.

We also wanted to make a legitimate family home out of this trailer. Something that all 6 of us could live comfortably in full time and that would last another 45 years. Not just a showcase of beautiful interior design without practical functionality. Afterall, this is our HOME, not a showroom.

This drove us to spend hours upon hours of research on everything from solar panels and lithium batteries to water heaters, gray tanks, cabinetry latches, hooks and internet boosting antennas. Every single part of this Airstream has been thought and re-thought through so many times I am just happy not to have to think about all this stuff anymore.

Before we show the final results, you may want to read through the process.

Dinette + Master Bedroom

I'll never forget the look on the kids' faces that first time we went to go look at the trailer! They didn't have to say a word. They were not impressed. We kept trying to tell them our plans but they lacked the ability to see past the yellow lights, oak laminate cabinets and carpet. Just have faith little ones! We're about to make a major transformation.

Airstream Before Dinnette

If you have 6 people in a 31’ trailer you are going to have multi-use spaces. There is no way around that. The original floorpan had a couch up front, but when we bought it there were two recliners and not much else. A small table folded up from the wall, but it was only big enough for a couple of people. It all had to go!

Airsteam Before Dinette Area

Removing the original end cap and replacing it with aluminum really opened up the headspace in here.

Airstream Dinette

We built the seating from the door all the way back to the nose. Every inch of the area underneath the seats is storage, with our massive lithium battery bank setup in the front...

...two lid based storage areas on the side, and drawers that pull out on the end. One holding Jonathan’s work and photography gear and other for all of our shoes!

Dinette Drawers

In the middle is a beautiful solid walnut table made by hand to fit the notches in the seating just right so that the marine pedestal lets it set gently down as we transform it from our eating and work area into...the master bedroom!

Airstream Bedroom

Or as we call it - a really, really big bed! The surrounding cushions rearrange to fill the entire space. A couple of blankets, sheets and pillows and you’re ready to hit the sack or pile on for family movie night. Yeah, the frame of this thing is built like a tank.

Standing Desk Workstation

Directly across from the front door is Jonathan’s standing desk area . A thin cabinet chase covers solar wires we needed to run from the roof and provides a small bit of storage. Next to that is our slide out trash can - the top of it doubles as a mini-desk to hold the laptop, keyboard, mouse and other items.

Standing Desk - Laptop

We mounted Jonathan’s Apple Cinema Display with a Newer Technology NuMount Pivot Wall Mount . This thing is amazing. The range of movement is so helpful in this tiny space. We can get it back up against the wall so it doesn’t stick out at night, or bring it all the way around the other side of the wall ( into the kitchen ) if he needs to work while everyone is at the table.

Standing Desk Wrap Around

Remember I mentioned piling on the bed to watch a movie? The mounted monitor can extend at least 18” and moves up and down so we can use it as a TV. High five for multi-use!

Monitor Turned Movie Night

The other piece to this puzzle was a small desk that the keyboard and mouse would go on that would be standing height. We looked at all sorts of options - even considered buying a second Numount Pivot Wall Mount. The difficult part was that this whole standing desk needed to be out of the way when not in use. And sturdy enough to withstand banging on a keyboard and using a mouse.

Someone jokingly mentioned that Jonathan should use a music stand - remember those from music class in school? But the idea of a stand stuck with him. He searched and searched and searched the internets for a pre-built solution and came up with nothing.

Finally, he found a company that made computer tables for camera tripods . He didn’t really like any of their specific products, but they sold their mount separately so he grabbed one of those, used the same walnut from our kitchen table and made his own. Their mount had 4 screw holes in the top so we had to match those up and get some longer screws, but it works perfectly, and this gives him multiple options.

DIY Standing Desk - Versital

He can slip the table off, compact the tripod and stick it in a drawer at night when not in use. Plus, he can put his laptop and mouse on it if we don’t want to use the inverter and run the monitor. Having the “table” part of his desk easily movable makes it simple to adjust depending on what the rest of the family is doing - and it only takes a few seconds to move things around.

The wall behind the monitor houses a lot of nerdy internet boosting gear that you can read about later :)

Need a reliable, boosted internet setup?

In this beautifully designed PDF, we cover our exact internet setup - from carrier plans to boosters to routers to antennas.

We'll even tell you how we installed it and how it all connects together.

Kitchen & Pantry

We ended up keeping basically the same 1972 kitchen layout, but made it much more usable. Everything was so dark and cluttered in here before, so my goal was to open up the space and make it functional for full-time living. Let's take a peek at what it looked like before.

Airstream before renovation

When we designed our kitchen, I wanted to have as much counter space as I could have since we do cook most of our meals in here. Right next to Jonathan’s office area is our ‘pantry’ side of the kitchen. We have a small NovaKool fridge/freezer combo that is plenty big enough to store a weeks worth of food for all 6 of us. Most of the items that we use on a weekly/daily basis are in the upper pantry cabinets.

Below we have baking items, bowls and our pots and pans and still have room for extra food storage. I wanted to leave a good portion of this side of the countertop usable. We opted for one side to have a barrister door to close off the clutter of charging devices, and one side to remain open for optimal food prep space. I especially love ‘the drawer’ as we call it. It is huge and can hold a lot of commonly used items.

Kitchen Appliances

Across from the pantry side is the 'kitchen' side. The original plan was to not have an oven and just use a double burner stovetop. I am so glad we changed our minds. I love my stove/oven! We went with an Atwood because I just couldn’t shell out the cash for the marine stove I really wanted. Still looks pretty nice, though! But most importantly it works great!

One of my favorite things about the kitchen is that we ended up having to raise the countertop height so that we could clear the fridge on the other side. I didn't want it to feel unbalanced so we raised both sides in the kitchen. A higher countertop just means more storage underneath and I love the extra height! Win/Win!

Airstream Kitchen

When looking for a sink I knew I wanted one deep bowl. I am in love with this Ruvati sink . The 16 gauge steel sink is a beast and came with a rack in the bottom to prevent scratching. It is the perfect size for an IKEA dish drain we got on a whim. I was so excited when it was a perfect fit!

The Kraus faucet we picked goes so perfectly with the Ruvati sink. I wanted something that could swivel 180 degrees so that when we are in the middle of nowhere we can just open the kitchen window and turn the faucet for a quick outdoor shower! Again...multi-use for the win!

Outdoor shower

As for the countertops. I have a love/hate relationship with them. I love the look of them, but I hate the fact that they scratch so easily. Think twice before you go with a solid surface, especially a dark color like ours. They are ridiculously heavy as well. If I had to do it over, I think I would have done butcher block top. Still heavy, but way less maintenance. Granted, the scratches do buff out, but should sliding a Kleenex box on a counter really scratch it?

You may have noticed these bird hooks I have in our kitchen!

Knives in the Airstream

I had picked those out long ago and knew I wanted to incorporate them into our design. I get asked so many times about where they are from. I got them from a company called At West End, but they are also available on Amazon !

Download our Renovation Checklist

Get an exhaustive overview of everything you'll need to think about for each step of planning your Airstream renovation. It's a simple way to start a complicated project.

I love our kids room!

We started out with the twin beds on each side from the original floor plan.

Airstream Before Twin Beds

But we wanted to open that space up and have more than a 12 inch walk space. We went with narrower beds and more storage! At first, we considered moving the bathroom to the middle so that the kids could have the back of the Airstream all to themselves, but I am glad we didn’t do that. Moving the bathroom drains and plumbing and figure out support for the beds along the curve in the back would have been too complicated.

Turns out my sister is a tiny house genius and had a great idea to make bunk beds that could be fold down into couches during the day. The tricky part was getting the height right and working around the wheel wells and windows. We turned to my dad and knew he would be able to come up with a plan that would work. And he nailed it!

We braced around the the wheel wells to support the lower bunks and the walls on either side and ribs in the frame to support the top ones. They are so sturdy and each kids has plenty of room for sleeping. The big kids took the bottom bunks and the little kids finally got their turn on the top bunks! They are all happy which makes us happy.

kids on bunk beds with beddy's bedding

It's just an added bonus that we can flip the top bunks down to make the beds into couches for the ultimate party room!

Airstream bunks

Each bed is equipped with Beddy's bedding (to keep things nice and tidy) , their own LED reading light as well as their own 120v plug and a 12 volt plug with USB insert . This means they can charge their own devices without hogging all the ports and they are loving their own spaces.

Bunk Bed Outlets

Above the top bunks and below the bottom bunks we crammed as much storage as we could - 14 cabinets and drawers all together! Working around the wheel wells and outside storage compartments was a little tricky, but we figured it out.

Img 2260

We did install two hooks on the kids side of the kitchen walls so that we can put up a curtain to divide the space for a little privacy.

I am so happy with the way our bathroom turned out seeing as we didn’t have a plan for it until the week we began building it. We knew we wanted to get as much storage in there as possible. What we started with felt so cramped, but we knew we didn't have much space to work with. Hopefully with cleaner lines and a simpler design, we could achieve the feel of it being bigger than it actually is.

Bathroom Before

First we put in a huge storage cabinet to the right that houses all our clothes and extra towels. The lower section is where our water heater and electrical wiring comes into the trailer so really we are only able to use two-thirds of it - but it’s a huge cabinet and really stores a bunch of useful items.

Keeping our clothes in these eBags packing cubes has been a game changer! Everything has a place and it's super easy to keep our clothes to a minimum and organized.

Bathroom Shot Airstream

In front of the window is our vanity. It’s tiny, but we spruced it up with the same countertop we used in the kitchen, a basin sink and modern faucet . Underneath, Dad made some custom shelves to go around the plumbing and we can keep our cleaning supplies there as well as storing some coco coir for our composting toilet .

Airstream Bathroom

To the left of the vanity is our shower . We went super practical on this. We didn’t want to spend the money or time fabricating some tiled masterpiece that would require the entire bathroom to get wet anytime anyone took a shower. We knew we could have done it and made it look amazing, but when it comes down to it, the functionality wins over being super pretty and impractical for our families needs.

Getting the shower to fit the curve in the back was kind of ridiculous, but it turned out great. We were even able to use the empty space behind the shower to hang a laundry bag so all our dirty laundry is out of sight.

Airstream Shower

Having this shower curtain rod really helps in the tiny space as well. We are able to pull out the bar when we are showering so that we can have a bit more elbow room to wash our crazy hair...I mean, have you seen this family’s hair? Out of control!

The hardest part for me in the bathroom is that we didn’t really have a place to hang towels that wouldn’t be visible. I agonized over it for a few days until I just gave up and we put hooks in the only places we had. 6 people, 6 hooks plus one awesome giraffe hook for our hand towel at the sink.

Being that the door is transparent, we added a little curtain that can be put up for changing. I think the kids appreciate that!

And of course we had to bring along our measuring ruler! I made this when the kids were little and it has all their heights marked on it. Literally the only space this would fit is on this bathroom wall. We had to cut a bit of it off, but it works!

Privacy Curtain

It may not be the most beautiful bathroom renovation, but it’s functional and I love it.

Oh! I almost forgot to tell you about our toilet! I’m sure you’re dying to know. We choose to go with a composting toilet because we mostly want to camp off grid, PLUS we didn’t want to have to deal with a black tank ever again! We had to deal with the stinky slinky in our 5th wheel and we knew we didn’t want to do that with our Airstream.

Natures Head Airstream

Going with our composting toilet allowed us to turn our existing black tank into a gray tank ( yes, we got new tanks ). We also added a second gray tank thus doubling our storage. With nearly 40 gallons of gray tank storage we can be out in the wild for quite a while before needing to dump! We have been using our composting toilet for a little over a month now and we can say that it is much better than dealing with a black tank. Thanks for a great product, Nature’s Head !

**UPDATE** It's been over two years using the composting toilet now and we LOVE IT, just wish we would have plumbed the urine diverter to go straight into the gray tank.**

Vintage Airstream Design Plans

by Nick | Mar 1, 2013 | Airstream | 1 comment

Vintage Airstream Design Plans

Several years ago while surfing the internet I stumbled up the Happy Janssen’s . At the time they were a nomadic family living in a large diesel motorhome that was powered by veggie oil. I was captivated by their freedom, their simple existence and their commitment to lead an intentional life for Christ. To top it all off the Janssen’s motorhome was stunning! Its was bright, organized and comfortable for their growing family of four.

The following months we followed their journey traveling the country and we dreamed of someday making a similar journey. Meanwhile we continued to work on our debt snowball and I (Nick) began to work on a tiny teardrop trailer that would allow us to start our own adventure on a smaller scale during the summers.

In this general time frame we ran across an interview with a young architect that had remodeled a vintage Airstream to live in full-time. Matthew Hoffman transformed his 70’s Airstream into a masterpiece . Clean open layout that maximized the existing space and utilized every inch of his 25’ Airstream Tradewind. After seeing Matthews Trailer I was instantly inspired by what could be accomplished with a vintage trailer. (and I knew Our family needed one)

matthew-hofmann-tradewind

So to fast-forward a bit we eventually bought a 1966 Airstream 26’ Overlander . After seeing what could be accomplished with a little creativity and sweat from the Janssens and Matthew’s Airstream inspiration we have lofty plans for our little house on wheels!

I love the challenge of small spaces. I love thinking outside the box and finding solutions. I love that everything has to be multifunctional, intentional and minimal. I love that we have to do more with less.

Here is what we plan to do with our Vintage Airstream the Land Yacht…

Airstream Design Plan

We want a simple open layout with a modern organic feel. We want space to cook ( we love to cook! ), entertain and work. The existing layout of the Overlander’s was a rear bath, with a bedroom separated by an accordion door and a couch/double pull-out bed, small kitchen area and front couch with a fold out table. The setup wasn’t bad but it was a bit compartmentalized and needed to be opened up. Plus the fold out table was a pain to use and we wanted a more permanent table for dining and work.

1966 26’ Airstream Overlander Square Footage (8’ x 25’) 176 interior square feet

Design Criteria

  • Modern Organic Style
  • Use as many Reclaimed or Re-purposed Material as Possible
  • Minimal Budget (approx $5k)
  • Open Layout
  • Dinette / Guest Bed
  • “Bedroom Space” for Paisley
  • Bright Interior
  • Gourmet Kitchen
  • Office Space & Storage
  • Space for Nick’s Tools, Outdoor Gear & Bikes
  • Space for Honda XR100 Motorcycle

Now and then: What Moscow looked like when it was rural (PHOTOS)

vintage airstream land yacht

Moscow was not built at once - the ancient city is still expanding, annexing new villages and towns. In total, over 220 rural settlements became Moscow districts, but the exact number of them is hard to estimate. Active development of the outskirts started in 1960, when it became necessary to solve housing (many people lived in communal apartments) and traffic (with the construction of the Moscow Ring Road) problems. Then, Moscow, with its six million inhabitants, increased almost twice in size and its new districts filled up with panel houses , which defined the appearance of ANY residential area in Russia until recently. By the 1980s, when the number of official residents exceeded eight million, Moscow went beyond the Moscow Ring Road, joining the districts of Butovo, Zhulebino and others. And, in 2012, the 12 million-people strong Moscow increased by almost 2.5 times again, annexing several towns up to the border with Kaluga Region, thereby becoming Europe’s largest city. Today’s residential areas include lots of high-rises, shopping malls, parks and public sites. We’ve chosen seven villages to compare how they look - then and now.

Left: A cow in the Belyayevo-Bogorodskoye village, 1968; Right: A 30-meters-graffiti devoted to the FIFA 2018 championship at the Profsoyuznaya street.

Left: A cow in the Belyayevo-Bogorodskoye village, 1968; Right: A 30-meters-graffiti devoted to the FIFA 2018 championship at the Profsoyuznaya street.

Between 1960-1986, several neighboring villages became the new Konkovo district in the south-west of Moscow (where you will find subway stations Kaluzhskaya, Belyaevo and Konkovo) with its main highway, Profsoyuznaya Street. This is a very beautiful area, where you won’t find industrial territories; instead, there are lots of parks, hills and old churches. It’s a pleasure to walk around Konkovo! In old photos, you can see that while they were building panel houses, cows were still grazing around them.

2. Kozhukhovo

Above: The village of Kozhukhovo in 1951. Below: Alexander Nevsky church in Kozhukhovo.

Above: The village of Kozhukhovo in 1951. Below: Alexander Nevsky church in Kozhukhovo.

This is one of the oldest villages in Moscow, which has been known since the 15th century and, since 1923, was included in Moscow. Kozhukhovo in the south-east of the city had its own railway station even in tsarist times, but the log houses remained here until the 1970s, when the area was finally surrounded by concrete buildings.

3. Troparyovo

Above: Wooden houses of the Troparevo village, 1978. Below: Troparevo metro station, 2019.

Troparyovo district in the southwest of the city was built on the site of the village, which became Moscow in 1960. The name came from its first ruler, boyar (a noble) Ivan Tropar (the word ‘tropar’ means a religious song in a church), who was buried here in 1393. During the Soviet years, there was a big kolkhoz (collective farm) with good transport connection, a school and a store. The last wooden houses were demolished in 1981. And, in 2014, a metro station was opened.

4. Chertanovo

Above: Chertanovo airfield, mid-1960. Below: A park in Chertanovo, 2010.

The former village of Chertanovo in the south of Moscow became its part in 1960. Besides a kolkhoz and other agricultural areas, in the 1940s-1960s, there was an airfield where you could learn to fly a glider. Then the village began to be built up with panel houses and the northern part of Chertanovo was even designed as a model neighborhood and considered a “Soviet paradise”, which could be shown to guests of the 1980 Olympic Games. (Read more about that here )

5. Cherkizovo

vintage airstream land yacht

Above: Old houses in Cherkizovo, 1964. Below: Bolshaya Cherkizovskaya street, 2009.

The old village of Cherkizovo-Podmoskovnye in the east of Moscow became part of the city in the early 20th century, but, until the 1970s, it still resembled a village with its wooden houses and gardens. Now, Cherkizovo is included in the Preobrazhenskoe District and the village’s name remains in the names of several streets and subway stations. You will also find the preserved Church of Elijah the Prophet, built in 1690.

6. Cheryomushki

Above: The village of Cheryomushki, 1954. Below: A new house in Cheryomushki, built on the place of old panel houses, 2020.

Above: The village of Cheryomushki, 1954. Below: A new house in Cheryomushki, built on the place of old panel houses, 2020.

In 1956-1959, the village of Cheryomushki in the south-west of Moscow was the area of the first housing development made up of ‘Khrushchyovkas’ buildings. It became a part of Moscow in 1958. The experimental site consisted of 13 four-storey and seven eight-storey buildings. The pilot apartments were tiny, but facades were decorated with brick, the courtyards had real fountains and pergolas for plants and the development had its own stores, canteens and even a cinema. (read more about it here )

Today many old ‘Khrushchyovkas’ in this district are replaced with new multi-storey buildings with big apartments and modern infrastructure.

7. Kuryanovo

vintage airstream land yacht

Left: Kuryanovo in 1967. Right: Kuryanovo railway station.

If you wondered where the time stopped in Moscow, it’s in the village of Kuryanovo (in the southeast) that has been part of the city since 1960. Kuryanovo is bordered from the city by the railways and going there is like taking a little trip to the Soviet past. In this area, most residential buildings are still two-storeyed with many gardens in the backyards. And here’s a big Lenin’s monument in the center of the district. Locals like their neighborhood for its authenticity.

In 1960, the village of Vykhino in southeastern Moscow joined the city. The old settlement, together with the Lenin collective farm, was demolished and residents were moved from their log huts to modern panel houses. Today, Vykhino is one of the largest districts of Moscow, where more than 220,000 people live.

9. Kommunarka

Above: Dairy farm of the Kommunarka sovkhoz, 1968. Below: New residential area.

One of the main districts of so-called ‘New Moscow’ became the settelment  of Kommunarka in 2012. In Soviet times, there was a large sovkhoz, which fell into disrepair with the collapse of the USSR. Today, the main street of the area is named after the last sovkhoz head, Alexandra Monakhova. The district it is very actively built up - in a few years, here appeared about hundred new houses. A subway station opened there in 2019.

10. Vatutinki

Vatutinki is another ‘New Moscow’ settlement, which joined Moscow in 2012. It’s as much as 17 kilometers to the MKAD (Moscow Ring Road). Before 2012, Vatutinki was the home to about 10,000 people and today, there are about 35,000 inhabitants. The population is constantly growing, moving into new houses.

A little blue house found itself on the grounds of a new housing development in the Moscow Region.

The owners of these old wooden houses refused to sell when real estate developers moved in. Take a look at the last villages surrounded by concrete giants.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

vintage airstream land yacht

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

vintage airstream land yacht

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

vintage airstream land yacht

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

vintage airstream land yacht

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

vintage airstream land yacht

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

vintage airstream land yacht

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

vintage airstream land yacht

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

vintage airstream land yacht

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

vintage airstream land yacht

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

vintage airstream land yacht

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

vintage airstream land yacht

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

vintage airstream land yacht

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

vintage airstream land yacht

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

vintage airstream land yacht

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

vintage airstream land yacht

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

vintage airstream land yacht

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!
