TUCKED AWAY AT AMERICA'S southernmost point where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Gulf of Mexico is a hidden tropical gem called Stock Island Yacht Club & Marina .

When visitors pull up to the six-pier marina, they see three bright blue and yellow hacienda-style condos surrounded by palm trees and clear turquoise water. The patios open up to fixed piers with remarkable seaside views. Located on Stock Island adjacent to Key West, this tropical escape has a Caribbean paradise groove.

Family-owned investment firm, Spottswood Companies , recently acquired the 13-acre property. In addition to condo rentals, the Category 5 hurricane- rated marina has 417 dry racks, 101 wet slips, high and dry storage units, fitness facilities, fuel, free ice delivery, pump-out services and member benefits such as access to the fitness facility, private pool and clubhouse.

A new dock and dine restaurant in the clubhouse offers hook-and-cook, where local chef James Jernigan and his staff prepare your fresh catch of the day.

Enjoy amenities such as golf cart, bike, paddleboard and kayak rentals, beach yoga classes and a BYOB tiki bar that sits at the water's edge overlooking a stunning view of Hawk's Channel . With its rapid expansion, developers also plan to bring live music to the property.

The resort also offers both deep sea and flats fishing, plus various boating excursions. One of the main attractions is the family day out charter rental with activities including fishing, snorkeling, sandbar tours, sunset cruises and more.

It's far enough from the mainland for a relaxing getaway, but close enough to venture into the Key West action. You can hop on the complimentary shuttle to visit downtown favorites such as famous Duval Street , only three miles away. You can also try several great dining options on Stock Island including the Italian restaurant Roostica , and the local favorite, Hogfish Bar and Grill .

"As Key West is becoming more and more developed and less affordable, Stock Island is the new place to be with a fun dining and art scene," says Todd Manuel, general manager. "It's been fun to watch that over the past few years."

With full property upgrades including new equipment, cleaning facilities and recently installed fiber optic Wi-Fi service, Stock Island Yacht Club plans to keep growing. Manuel says "the secluded location is off the beaten path with tons of amenities is the most exclusive part of the experience. From our restaurant balcony, you can literally sit at the table and watch both the sunrise and sunset from the same spot without moving that is pretty unique."

I’m chatting with Bobby Mongelli, owner of Hogfish Bar & Grill , the delightfully ramshackle Stock Island institution situated on Safe Harbour Marina, roughly a 15-minute drive north of Key West , when a hostess approaches our table to ask, “Are they allowed to have their parrot out here?”

We turn to see a young woman with sun-bleached blonde hair wearing a boater’s foul weather jacket and a macaw with brilliant tangerine and royal blue tail feathers perched on her shoulder.

“Yes—yes, yes!” Mongelli cries without hesitation. “The parrot’s cleaner than most of the people!” A fast-talking D.C. native, Mongelli moved to the Florida Keys in 1983 from Aspen, Colorado, to escape the cold. After a series of odd jobs (unloading mackerel boats, diving, washing dishes), he got a foothold in the restaurant business and eventually opened Hogfish in 2002, converting an old shrimper bar into the beloved dockside, open-air restaurant it is today.

Arriving on Stock Island

Separated from Key West only by the narrow Cow Key Channel, Stock Island is both an extension of its famed neighboring island and a destination unto itself. It’s a holdout of “old Key West,” maintaining elements of the way the island used to be before tourism took over. Stock Island is where you’ll find the area’s last working waterfronts and shipyards for shrimpers, lobstermen, and commercial fishermen. It’s also home to artists, boat builders, multigenerational Keys families, and much of the area’s workforce from Haiti and Cuba.

The Perry Hotel is one of a handful of new hotels on Stock Island.

In 2017, the same year Hurricane Irma smashed into the Lower Keys but largely spared this area, Stock Island’s first two hotels opened. Oceans Edge Resort & Marina and The Perry Hotel now provide tourists with unprecedented access to this largely local enclave.

Back at Hogfish Bar & Grill, license plates, vintage signs, and sundry ephemera are tacked to the walls, including photographs of Ernest Hemingway grinning ear to ear on a Key West dock standing next to his catch, another of Fidel Castro at the rear of a fishing boat, casting a line into tranquil waters offshore. An old poster inside the restaurant advertises ferry service between Key West and Havana that once departed from these docks in the 1950s pre-embargo.

The bar is famous for its laid-back, salty ambiance and fresh, local seafood—its namesake refers to a snapper abundant in local waters that cooks up flaky and sweet. It’s a delicacy best enjoyed here sandwiched between pillowy soft Cuban bread with melted Swiss cheese and sautéed onions and mushrooms, which I polished off at the bar earlier and accompanied with a cold Kalik beer while seated between a couple visiting from Nashville and a gentleman who drove down from nearby Big Pine Key.

A day on the island

Shon Williams, another longtime local and avid waterman, operates Fun in the Sun boat charters and rental company from Oceans Edge Marina and the nearby Key West Harbour Yacht Club (which, despite the name, is actually in Stock Island). He and his colleague Neil Mellies, a photographer and fifth-generation conch (the term used to describe Key West natives) of Cuban descent, showed me around the island for an afternoon.

We stop at nearby Washed Up , a woodworking studio and showroom run by mother-son artist duo Deb and Kasidy Fritts. Specializing in driftwood sculptures made of found materials, reclaimed “upcycled” wooden furniture, and fine art, they share the space with jewelry designer and metalsmith Nick Soto. We admire a piece Kasidy recently sold, a giant mahi-mahi sculpture fashioned out of driftwood, Cuban mahogany, and copper wire with vintage ship nails for teeth and an old sail’s clew sewn into the tail.

Next, we head to Coast , an artist collective founded by longtime local and boat captain Billy Kearins, where we find French abstract artist Diane Barthélemy, newly arrived from Brooklyn, at work on a painting. The dusty outdoor compound is part studio, part performance venue, and part community gathering place with Yahman’s Authentic Jamaican Jerk Shack food truck holding court at the entrance.

Our appetites piqued, we duck into El Mocho , a no-frills Cuban luncheonette that opens at 6 a.m. and is always packed with fishermen at breakfast getting their fix of eggs and grits before heading offshore for the day. At this late afternoon hour, we practically have the place to ourselves and grab red vinyl stools at the counter. Mellies, a regular, orders us a colada (strong, sweet Cuban coffee served in a small Styrofoam cup and shared by pouring into thimble-sized plastic shots) and the tastiest croquetas jamon I’ve had in recent memory. Freshly fried, they’re hot and crispy and practically liquidate in my mouth. After paying our tab (the entire snack cost only $6), we were off to hop aboard one of Williams’s boats, a 39-foot Contender, to watch the famous hot pink Key West sunset with shrimp boats dotting the horizon. Stock Island’s waterfront extends like fingers into the Atlantic Ocean, lined with marinas and clearing the sightline for idyllic water views from almost any vantage point.

Surrounded by nature

“This is what I love about Stock Island,” Williams says as we idle into the channel, taking in the turquoise-green waters, mangrove islands, and pelicans coasting just above the surface. “You’re surrounded by more nature here.”

Mongelli, of Hogfish Bar & Grill, is also a partner in the pop-up dinner series Lost Kitchen Supper Club alongside chefs Layla Barr and Martin Liz. “We wanted to create a space that builds community and highlights sustainable and organic food from local fishermen and farmers,” says Barr.

One of the local suppliers is Patrick Garvey of Grimal Grove , a historic tropical fruit tree and vegetable garden on Big Pine that was destroyed by Hurricane Irma. With Key West largely spared by the storm, Grimal Grove found a new home in Stock Island adjacent to Roostica , Mongelli’s popular wood-fired pizzeria, which recently opened a food truck of its own that will host a rotating lineup of chefs and cuisines.

Ending the night at The Perry Hotel

The Perry Hotel is situated on Stock Island Marina Village with its 220 slips, a community garden, and artist studios with a stage for live music. Named one of the best-designed hotels to open in 2017 by Architectural Digest , The Perry’s modern, industrial aesthetic fetaures clean lines, raw concrete, and steel and is inspired by the island’s boatyards.

Its onsite restaurant, Matt’s Stock Island Kitchen & Bar , serves some of the most sophisticated and flavorful food in the area. Dishes are inflected with Southern soul and Creole flavors and take advantage of the island’s bounty of fresh seafood. One evening, a friend and I delighted over the crispy, light-as-clouds crab beignets served with lemon powder and Old Bay aioli. I’m still dreaming about the sumptuous grouper in thyme butter swimming with crawfish and cornbread gnudi . Even the oldest conches might be excited about this delicious newcomer.

When talking to locals about the appeal of Stock Island, a theme started to materialize. It’s quieter, saltier, off-the-beaten path, they told me. More wildlife, less commercial, like the Key West I remember from my childhood. For those searching for an authentic Florida Keys experience, Mongelli offers some straightforward advice. “People come to find the old Key West and it’s not in Key West anymore,” he says. “It’s here. It’s actually in Stock Island . . . This is it.”

I was hotel guest at neighboring Oceans Edge Resort and we had benefit of eating at this yacht club. Not busy at all at lunch time on a Monday afternoon in October. I had club sandwich with onion rings. Both were good. Very quiet and peaceful place.

Most definitely a beautiful, serene place. I wish that I was able to hang around longer than 20 minutes. We came here to take our group photo and The Wharf (3rd stop on the pub crawl). I would like to explore this area more on my next visit.

Key West Harbour (now Stock Island Resort and Yacht Club) was a dream come true. My husband and I wanted a destination wedding and had our hearts set on the Florida Keys. From day one, as we started looking at and touring venues, Karen Verri was responsive, accommodating, and professional. We ended up deciding on Key West Harbour because of the gorgeous location, amenities, and the privacy they offered. The value that they provided in comparison to other locations nearby was unmatched. Karen was extremely flexible about finding a package that worked for our needs and budget. She provided wonderful recommendations for everything from the decor, timeline, and other vendors. We also wanted to include our dogs in the ceremony. Karen assisted us with this and was more than happy to accommodate our 4 legged children in the wedding. We ended up staying in a suite on site and I can't stress it enough that if you choose to have your wedding here (which you should) that staying on site made the entire experience much less stressful. Their suites and onsite amenities are clean, updated, spacious, and beautiful. Karen was also present the whole day of our wedding and was there to make sure everything went off without any problems and to ensure that myself and the groom were enjoying our day. You can tell that she is both passionate and great at her job. On top of everything else, the food that they served was probably the best food I have ever had at a wedding (their Rib-Eye steak was huge and cooked perfectly, and other guests commented on how great the Mahi Mahi was). We are already planning our trip back!

Beautiful facilities! Brutal & Consistently Poor Service!!! I had heard great things from a few different people & Active Captain about the price & location is great for Key West. I agree that the price is competitive for the area, but not acceptable for the level of consistently poor service we have received. We booked for 2 months and were extremely excited to finally make it here. The facilities are nice and marina is pretty sheltered. My 2 major issues are the staff & the Internet access. In my opinion: The staff is what either makes or breaks a marina! We have stayed at moderately well maintained marinas with exceptional staff and the experience has always been dramatically better than this marina. The other marina staff cares! That is NOT the case at Key West Harbour Yacht Club! At least for the staff at the ship store, club house, as well as the management! The staff (excluding 2 dock hands)! Terrible customer service!!! When we checked in, we expected that they would at least know their own services and facility. The lady said, "I don't know, because I have only worked here 2 months" to most of the questions I had asked and they were basic questions that most marinas proactively tell you about their facilities. Clueless & clearly did not care what so ever! I have heard "I don't know" and "It's corporate that is the problem" more times than I have ever heard it at any other marina! When checking in and going to the Ship Store & Club House - It has been 100% consistent with those two answers! Appalling for a "Yacht Club" or any other business for that matter!! There have been a couple of helpful staff (The deck hands that pump out the boats & assist on the docks), but almost everyone else is not proactive in providing any type of service and to make it even worse, acts like you are bothering them when you ask them a question. I'm flat our tired of it and will not be back! I have many many examples of POOR service, but just a few are what I have already mentioned and things like, I would call ahead and ask for help from a dock hand when coming in with our boat and being told - No - We are too busy... The dogs (and their owners) at this marina are also ridiculous! They are barking a tremendous amount! They are not on leashes (the boat owners that live there permanently just let them jump off their boats and run around)! There wasn't a morning that we walked out to the tiki hut to watch the sunrise, that we didn't have to dodge several piles of dog pee & poop on the docks! Every morning!!! Ridiculous!! The 2nd issue is the Internet: It is terrible!! Once I actually spoke with the "IT Guy" his answers were once again - "I don't know", "It's corporate that is the problem" and also "Maybe next month it will be fixed". Next month came and went! It was fixed! I have been cruising quite a while and understand that most marinas have terrible Internet access, but this is supposed to be a "Yacht Club" and I expected at least moderately acceptable levels of Internet access. When questioned a little deeper, his answer was "Call Com Cast and have them install Internet on your boat", of course at my expense. Once the 'IT Guy" actually came to my boat (since they knew I had IT experience) and asked me to go troubleshoot it for them. I said no problem and I can fix it too! One 2 conditions: 1) I will not fix it for free (He said that they would not pay to have it fixed or even reduce my slip fee's at all.) 2) If it is hardware related, that they will need to purchase some additional hardware to replace it. (He said no! They are not willing to spend any money at all!) Needless to say - I didn't fix their Internet issues for free and pay for the hardware out of my own pocket!!! Ridiculous! One last note / joke! They have just increased their transient monthly rate from by $10.00 per foot / per month! If someone came in and trained this staff properly, replaced the dead weight and invested a little money into their Internet, then this would be an exceptional place to stay. Until that happens, I will not be back!!

This place is awful to live at and keep your boat. We have been hit countless times both by employees controlling a boat and other customers. We have not been told once about an incident unless we caught them at it. They have raised the slip fee to a ridiculous $30 a foot with a proposed $35 a foot coming in the next 6 months. On top of that they charge you for the size of the slip not the size of your boat. If they break anything on your boat they force you to use their on site repair service that is through Boat Services. And if you don't want to use them, they charge you a vendor fee for your mechanic and $100 a day for a dry slip to pull you boat. This is highway robbery at its best.

Finest marina facility in the Florida Keys. Clubhouse, pool , private beach , gym, great restaurant , great bar, best views of the Atlantic. Exceptionally helpful staff. 5 stars !

The chef's special on the day was almond encrusted snapper and it was delicious (or so I'm told). The 6 layered carrot cake with homemade whipped cream was worth stuffing myself for. The 4 star is for the prices, but I guess that's expected with the venue.

Stock Island Yacht Club & Marina is a private, oceanfront venue located in Key West, Florida. The marina which it is located within is located along the Boca Chica Inlet just off the Atlantic Ocean. This venue offers a stunning oceanfront view for tropical/ nautical wedding celebrations. Large scale and intimate event spaces are available for groups of all sizes.

COVID Updates

Due to the county mandates, guests are required to wear face coverings while in buildings on property, unless they are seated to eat. What does this mean for your wedding party? Our stunning private beach and patio are in open air spaces, allowing maximum space for social distancing, and face coverings are not required while outdoors on property. Facilities and Capacity Couples can host their ceremonies on a private white sand beach and their reception on the adjoining brick patio. Smaller events can also be held in The Club Dining Room or the outside connecting balcony that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. Services Offered Stock Island Yacht Club & Marina offers a unique venue for ceremonies and receptions, as well as bridal showers, rehearsal dinners, and post wedding brunches. Couples are provided with tables, chairs and linens. Rental items such as a bamboo arch, aisle décor, lighting, dance floor, centerpieces, and floral décor and accessories can all be added. A full bar is provided, as well as bartenders, barware, flatware, glassware, and china. All food and beverages are handled on site through the venue. Meals are offered in a variety of styles which include stationary and passed hors d'oeuvres, buffets and plated. NEW packages available for small weddings (under 20) and elopements!

Cuisine Menus are fully customizable and food offerings can be included for those with dietary restrictions, such as gluten-free and vegan/vegetarian.

For those who want to get a little bit of heightened exercise, there is a health club available to boaters, which provides lockers, showers, and laundry to patrons. The dog-friendly marina is nearby plenty of outdoor walking trails and sidewalks, so you can enjoy some extra fresh air and cardio with the pups. Stock Island Yacht Club is conveniently a full-service marina, so you will have all of your boating needs at the tips of your fingers without having to leave the marina.
