Sailing Reviews in Lake Tahoe
August, 2022
We had an amazing time on our sailing adventure in Lake Tahoe. The whole process from reservation, communication to the sailing adventure was smooth. Definitely the highlight of our trip and the whole family enjoyed it. Thank you Nicholas and Tasha for everything!
August, 2021
Captain Nick is an experienced sailor with a lot to share with the ability to be as involved as you want to be. Our family truly enjoyed our experience and would highly recommend Captain Nick as a go to if you really want to experience sailing vs. being sailed around. Loves what he does and shares that with those that sail with him.
August, 2020
We had a wonderful time on Nick’s boat! Two of our friends had never been sailing before, so we weren’t sure how it was going to go, but Nick made everybody feel comfortable and his experience really showed. There was plenty of heeling, laughter and fun. We highly recommend this experience with Nick.
My family and I had an absolute wonderful time sailing on Lake Tahoe with Nick. Everything experienced was professional. Nick also took the time and energy to teach all on board as much as they wanted to learn about sailing, which was a lot!!!. During the course of the trip, we had complete confidence in his sailing skills and safety of the vessel. Such a magical and wonderful Tahoe experience. Thank you Nick
Our family of four had a great time on Nick’s sailing boat today. It was a wonderful experience for my kids to learn about sailing and helping Nick with fun tasks. We definitely much prefer this over just get on the boat and sit there and do nothing like with other cruise or boat options. The weather was perfect in early Aug from 2-5p. No jacket needed!
Our sailing experience with Nick was top notch! I can't say enough good things about our trip. My family and I are just learning to sail and Nick was quick to pick up on our level of skill and teach us more about adjusting the sails, handling the rigging, reading the wind and how to better control the boat. The trip was also enjoyable for my mom and young daughter who were able to sit back and enjoy the ride. Nick was very friendly, responsive in his communication before the trip, flexible with the needs of our group, and customized our trip to provide an amazing experience for all of us. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to sail on Tahoe!

The Ultimate Guide To Lake Tahoe Boat Rentals
Clear, turquoise water freckled with granite boulders and 72-miles of pine covered shoreline. Lake Tahoe is what summer dreams are made of. And while wading from the beach is certainly nice, is it really a summer in the Sierras if you don’t get on the water? (Answer: well, yes, but still, let’s talk Lake Tahoe boat rentals!)
Finding a place in Lake Tahoe that offers boat rentals isn’t tough—but when it comes to south shore or north shore, jet ski or pontoon boat, captain or drunk uncle? That’s where we’ve got you covered.
A private captain, a spacious boat, your crew of six—it’s the perfect recipe for the ultimate day on Lake Tahoe. Let Boat Tahoe show you the best spots on the lake with a 2, 3 or 4 hour private boat tour!
Types of Lake Tahoe Boat Rentals
If you’re not up-to-date on boat jargon, the question of wake surf, powerboat or pontoon might be a little difficult to answer. So let’s review what we’re working with.
Powerboat Rentals
Remember the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears? For most people, this one is juuuust right. A Lake Tahoe power boat rental offers a balance between speed and comfort, leisure and play. It’s meant to comfortably sit a family or small group of friends, and move between fishing, sunbathing and water skiing with ease.
Some power boats will have deck seating and others will have ‘bowrider’ seating that allows your crew to spread out between the front and back of the water. (And, more importantly, to enjoy a Titanic moment on the bow.)
It’s got the oopmh to make it from Emerald Bay to Sand Harbor, enough space to relax, enough of a wake to tow. It’s a classic option for an ultra-classic lake day. But mostly—you’re paying for the rumble of the engine as you push down the throttle and a brisk spray of freshwater across your wildly grinning face. You deserve that.
Wake Surf Rentals
Some people like the idea of being on the water, but not in it. Others view it as a big, blue playground. If you’re part of the latter, you’re a prime candidate for a wakesurf boat rental on Lake Tahoe.
Where a powerboat is designed for leisure and play, a wakesurf boat is all about the play. In the endless pursuit of a monster wake, you sacrifice a little bit of lounging space. You’ll also sacrifice some speed. (Remember, this is about the wake and not much else.) But that doesn’t really bother you—because you’re here to wakeboard, wake surf and water ski your guts out.
Pontoon Boat Rentals
Pontoon boats are like the Golden Retrievers of the lake. They’re loved by everyone, a friend to all ages and an unfaltering good time. Ideal for sightseeing, slow touring and tucking into hidden beaches, a pontoon boat rental on Lake Tahoe is a fast track to good living.
Although pontoon boat rentals tend to cost more than your standard power boat, they typically fit more people too. With space for about a dozen or so, they’re ideal for larger groups that basically want to chill on a floating patio. Of course, there are pontoon options with 150hp motors, which add light towing and touring to the mix.
P.S. — We’ve got an entire guide dedicated to pontoon boats and party boats if you know that’s your thing!
Party Boat Rentals
Coming in with the highest level of chill-factor, party boats are made for (responsible) floating festivities. It’s a next-level pontoon boat, with a pulse on the summer lake day experience in a way that no one else does.
A Lake Tahoe party boat rental comes with amenities you didn’t even know you needed. Waterslides and grills, restrooms and boomin’ stereo systems are all fair game. Not all party boats are created equal of course, so if you’re dead set on a particular feature, you’ll need to do your research first.
Where to Rent A Boat In Lake Tahoe
We only say things we mean, and we mean it when we say this—every inch of Lake Tahoe’s shoreline is a pleasure to explore. There’s hidden coves with topaz pools, private pockets of beach and bustling marinas stocked with Rum Runners and burgers.
But Lake Tahoe is simply too big to discover every nook and cranny during a half or even full day excursion. We highly recommend you rent your boat on the side of the lake you want to explore. In boating terms, Lake Tahoe is less of a lake and more of a mini ocean. You just can’t expect to rent a boat in South Lake Tahoe, and spend the day exploring the north shore.
It’ll be a long day, a huge fuel bill, and hours spent commuting rather than chilling, swimming, enjoying. We promise you’ll have more fun if you rent on the south shore and stay south, or rent on the north shore and stay north.
South Lake Tahoe Boat Rentals: Where To Rent A Boat
Home to the lake’s busiest marinas and beaches, South Lake Tahoe really needs no introduction. A happy knot of hotels and restaurants, bars and casinos, there’s plenty of boat rentals in South Lake Tahoe and places to explore once you’ve set sail.
A quick Google search for “South Lake Tahoe Boat Rentals” will bring up a truly endless amount of options. Here’s two well-loved, reliable options that even offer online booking:
- Action Watersports : With four marinas on the South Shore—one of them being Camp Richardson—Action Watersports is a super reliable option for south shore boating. Their fleet includes all measures of jet skis, pontoon boats and powerboats, with tons of pricing, size and speed options. Plus, if you decide that the whole driving the boat thing isn’t for you, they offer boozy Rum Runner cruises where your only job is to enjoy the view.
- Tahoe Sports : More royalty in the South Lake Tahoe boat rental game, Tahoe Sports rents out of Ski Run Marina and the Tahoe Keys. They’ve got everything. Everything. From premium wake surf boats to the humble pedal boat, these guys offer it all.
- Zephyr Cove : Slightly more east shore than south, Zephyr Cove is still more than worthy of a South Lake Tahoe boat rental shout out. They too have a high-quality fleet of boats with wake surf boats, pontoon boats and not to be forgotten; the party boat of all party boats. Toys like water skis and wakeboards can also be rented here—and they offer cruises, lodging, dining and well, everything else imaginable.
South Lake Tahoe Boat Rentals: Where To Visit
- Visit Emerald Bay and the iconic Fannette Island with its historic tea house.
- Stop in at Camp Richardson’s Beacon Grill for a Rum Runner.
- Check out the shops or grab a bite to eat at Ski Run Marina.
- Anchor outside of Round Hill Pines or Zephyr Cove.
- Cruise past hidden coves near the West Shore’s Sugar Pine or D.L. Bliss State Park.
North Lake Tahoe Boat Rentals: Where To Rent A Boat
We like to think of North Lake Tahoe as the chill little brother of the south shore. While there’s still places to rent a boat in North Lake Tahoe and bustling dockside restaurants, a sleepier tone means your chances of finding a private cove are simply better. We’re not picking favorites—but there’s some pretty radical coastline here that’d be much harder to access if your boat rental comes from the south.
Much like the south shore, there’s a ton of great options for boat rentals in North Lake Tahoe. Here’s a few we like, all with online booking:
- AWS Incline : A similar namesake, but a different business than our friends on the south shore, Action Water Sports Incline Village has a nice fleet of boats in all the usual flavors. Rent a private pontoon, a yacht with a captain, or ditch the private boat idea altogether and grab a ticket for a sailing or catamaran cruise.
- Floater With A Motor : As the cool name might imply, these guys offer a freakin’ cool pontoon boat. Although they have only one , they’re making the list because this boat is kind of the lake day dream. A double-decker pontoon boat with towing power and a slide, it’s basically the perfect option.
- SWA Watersports : While these guys don’t offer an online booking option, they’re making our list anyway. Conveniently operating out of both a west shore and north shore location, SWA Watersports has a great selection of boats with multi-day options. If you have a lakefront rental or mooring option, this is an amazing way to enjoy more of Lake Tahoe. And more Lake Tahoe is always better.
North Lake Tahoe Boat Rentals: Where To Visit
- Take a pit-stop of Gar Woods Bar & Grill for a little happy hour refuel.
- Steal a peek at the lakeside mansions along Agate Bay.
- Claim a boulder near Sand Harbor then watch the crowds from the water.
- Cruise the east shore for a private stretch of beach or deep, blue cove.
- Strip down for a sunbathe sesh near Secret Cove or Whale Beach.
Lake Tahoe Boat Rentals With Captain & Crew
If you’re anything like us, your definition of the perfect lake day involves beer. And probably a lot of it. But hey, no shame in your drinking game when your sunny, Emerald Bay Saturday comes with a legitimate captain and crew. Just imagine—no wondering what side of the channel to enter on; no untangling the anchor; no hiding your Truly from the sheriff (oh yeah, they’re out there and a BUI is a real thing).
All you have to do is remember to apply sunscreen and for god’s sake, get a taxi home. It’s honestly better for everyone, especially because you’ll get looped into protected coves and private swimming spots in a way that only a local captain could.
Luckily, our friends at Lake Tahoe Boat Rides & Boat Tahoe understand that boating and beer are like peanut butter and jelly. Boat rentals from either of them come with a licensed captain to keep you safe and show you all the best coves, beaches and hidden spots.
What To Know Before Renting A Boat On Lake Tahoe?
Before you sail out onto the big blue, there’s a few things to know about your Lake Tahoe boat rental.
- Be cautious of strong winds and currents . The sheer size of Lake Tahoe makes it prone to the same conditions you’d see out at sea! Keep the sometimes challenging conditions in mind as you plan out your day.
- The water is cold . Lake Tahoe’s surface water temperature hovers around the mid-60s in the summer. While a glacial lake full of snowmelt might be refreshing, clear and beautiful––it can also be dangerous for long swims or young kids.
- Do your research! Some rentals charge for fuel and taxes outside of the hourly cost, others come with water toys and rentals included. While all are very, very fun, it’s worth researching what’s included before opting for the lowest price tag.
- Follow the rules. Boat driver under 25? Driving while over the BAC limit? Fishing without a license? With the goal of keeping everyone safe, the Coast Guard actively patrols the lake and will hand out tickets if they catch you doing something you shouldn’t. There’s plenty of good, clean fun to be had, so learn the rules before you go, and follow ‘em!
Of course, boat rentals aren’t the only way to get out on the lake. There’s dozens of options for sunset sails, private dinner charters and happy hour cruises—and all of them are amazing options. But being able to launch your brother-in-law off that rogue wake? Some things are just priceless.
Choose your own adventure with a self-guided, all-electric boat rental on Lake Tahoe! Light & packable, it’s the ultimate DIY experience.

Want the perfect summer sunset experience? Launching from our private dock in Tahoe Vista, your experienced captain will take you on a tour of the North shore to watch the sunset over the Sierra Nevada’s. North Lake Tahoe Boat Rental started with a passion for being on the water, the feeling of relaxation and yearning to share that experience with others. We had come to the realization that there are too many people who visit Tahoe, that do not have the ability to get out on the Lake. We’re here to fix that. We are attempting to include as many people as possible in sharing our passion.
Our crew will help you every step of the way. Each boat is guided by a dockhand to help plan your families whole vacation, not only your boat rental. We know you are here to have a good time and we don’t want to stop you from doing that. You’re on Tahoe Time, we get it.
Our affordable pricing (by Tahoe standards) is designed to allow everyone to enjoy the beauty Lake Tahoe has to offer. NLTBR is the only company renting brand new boats so you are not stranded in the middle of the lake on a 2001 Sea Ray. We provide complimentary tubes, cooler and ice for every rental when requested.
We have proudly been serving customers from Tahoe Vista, Kings Beach, Incline Village, Truckee, Tahoe City, Sunnyside and entire the North Lake area for the last 7 summers!

CHECK OUT OUR ★★★★★ REVIEWS!
The entire experience from signing up for the ride till hand off was well orchestrated. The signing up process was smooth and most of it was online. The boat was clean and we were given a proper guidance of the boat operations. The drive into the Emerald bay was memorable.
Extremely efficient check in process and helpful staff. They had all the boats ready for us upon arrival and explained everything we needed to do for the trip. Easy to get to and plenty of selection.
We reserved a 20’ boat for a half day (3 hours paid, 4th hour free). Reservations were very easy to make and are recommended. We picked a very busy time so it did take about an hour to get checked in and on the boat. Our 4 hours didn’t start until we were on the boat. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. We are repeat customers and they always treat us right!
Everything was top-notch. The folks doing the paperwork were efficient, informative, and worked quickly. The guys dealing with the boats were friendly and did a good job running over the boat operations. Highly recommended.
Oh my goodness such a blast!! Mark and Pete were so much fun! My mom wanted to go 1000' up for her 80th birthday, so she, my nephew and I went - absolutely breathtaking and the guys made it so special and such an absolute blast! They took tons of pictures for us (that turned out great!) and we also opted to rent their GoPro for great shots (getting to take the video card with us. We now want to come back and rent the entire boat in September with more family - super memorable and amazing!!
Everything was extremely smooth. Reserved a pontoon online, check-in was easy and took exactly how long they estimated it would. The pontoon was even nicer than I expected and everyone was super friendly. Couldn't have asked for a better time.

We rented a 24' cobalt for 2 kids and 8 adults. There was plenty of room. The boat was clean and looked new. Be prepared to walk into the water to board the small boat to take you to your rental. The staff was friendly and went over all the details needed. I will definitely be rentiifrom them again in the future.
View from the boat
Great experience. The staff great from figuring out our booking to signing in, to the tenders getting us to and from the boat. The boat was great. 26' ski boat named Orca. Plenty of room for our crew of 9, and plenty of power for some fun tubing and wakeboarding. Thanks Rent A Boat Tahoe. See you next Summer!

We had a great day with our 4 hour rental today. The staff and Foster are excellent. The check in process is efficient.
Would not rent from this place simply because of the customer service I received from Tailyor. She had a snotty attitude and was rude when I was trying to understand the pricing for renting a boat with a captains fee. If this is how they run their business, I would go elsewhere!!!
Just had an amazing weekend out on Lake Tahoe, we rented two boats for a bachelor party. I can not say enough about how good of an experience we had on the lake. The captains were professional, but more so ready to make sure you have a great time. Don't look further book a day with captain Zach and make a day to remember!
Awful customer service and lack of accountability and integrity. Would not rent here. Our boat broke down 15 minutes into a 4 hour ride, which was unfortunate but shit happens. The head of the rental company kindly promised a full refund as they slowly towed our boat back to shore... 2 weeks after the trip invoice for the full trip comes in with maybe a ~$100 discount for a 15 minute boat ride. Customer service absolutely useless and embarrassing.
WOW! What a great customer experience. Great boat & Great, Friendly people. We have rented from the large marinas previously & never will again - instead of feeling like just another renter that the large marinas talk down to & belittle Rent a boat Lake Tahoe made us feel like we were borrowing a friends boat and they genuinely wanted to see us enjoy our time while ensuring we were safe. Don't look any further for a boat rental in Tahoe - these folks are the right choice
Where do I even begin?! not only are these some of the sickest boats I've ever ridden. But the staff alone will be the sole reason why I come back year after year. Ashley and Jen are two of the kindest and wisest girls I've ever met. They know all the hotspots, make you feel like you're at home. Absolutely the best boat rental in Lake Tahoe hands-down. Ashley and Jen you are the absolute best thank you so much again for making it such a special occasion!!
Great renting experience, got us out there quickly, boat was clean and well maintained.
Horrible experience!! Hosts literally talked bad about me on their walkie talkies while on an open channel. My family and friends heard everything they said and it was so humiliating!! When i told the manager my experiance he blew me off and said he will always take his employees side because he rents 20 boats a day and i guess one frustrated cuatomer means nothing to him. Totaly Unprofessional!! We will never rent from them again. They dont care about repeat customers. More details: We have been renting boats from them for many years and have mostly great experiences. But this year was much different. After a miscomunication about a wake boarding boat . I was frustrated that the host was trying to tell me a normal ski boat was a wakeboarding boat because you can wakeboard from it. We wantes a wake boat with a tower. She basicaly lied to me because she didnt think i knew the diffeeence. I have been wakeboarding for 30 years so I know what a wake boat is. So I got frustrated and voiced my frustration. We eventially took the normal ski boat and went on our way. But then overheard them talking smak over the radios. So humililiating !! Dont rent a boat here!!
Aug 21, 2023
Well if you rented from us for many years we must have done something right. The reality is your aggressive attitude toward my female employees was not received well my my male employees. We are a family here at rent a boat Tahoe. When I confronted you about it you cursed in my face showing your true colors. Little man trying to push females around and got called out.

Some of the most beautiful, vacation-worthy lakes in the world can be found in the United States, and thanks to Airbnb, many of the best lake house rentals are easily bookable with just a few clicks. To make things simple, we’ve picked out some of the nicest lakefront cottages, cabins , and guest houses across Airbnb right now, with amenities like saunas, hot tubs, and lakeside fire pits. (And while summer may be winding down, plenty of the rentals below have ample availability through August and September—just in time for a last-minute Labor Day getaway or family vacation.) You’ll want to book your stay ASAP, however; we suspect these great vacation rentals won’t be available for long.

Contract signed as ExplorUS expands operations at Camp RIchardson to include marina
File photo of Camp Richardson Marina
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though the U.S. Forest Service gave the 20-year concessionaire permit for Camp Richardson to ExplorUS, the marina was still owned and operated by Bob Hassett and Camp Richardson Resort Incorporated (CRRI). Hassett was the former concessionaire of the government-owned resort.
A one-year contract was signed this month to have ExplorUS take over operations of the marina.
“As longtime locals, we understand how important access to the lake is to Camp Richardson guests and the community. It is a seamless experience that visitors have enjoyed for more than 40 years,” said Hassett, president of CRRI. “This partnership with the new concessionaires of Camp Richardson Resort will continue that tradition.”
Hassett said CRRI will continue to operate the popular Rum Runner and Vikingsholm cruises out of the Camp Richardson Marina. Bookings can be made online www.rumrunnercruises.com or at the marina.
ExplorUS will operate the 3.6-acre marina for the 2024 season along with the adjacent Camp Richardson Resort, a 128-acre complex that consists of a hotel, cabins, campgrounds, a general store, and The Grove, a lakefront restaurant.
“We look forward to offering additional amenities for our guests and visitors when visiting the Lake Tahoe area,” said Frank Pikus, ExplorUS CEO. “Guests will have access to the marina dock, boat and wave runner rentals, and the dock gas station. Seasonal buoys and buoys for dining at The Grove will also be available this summer.”
Pikus added that guests can also look forward to new and expanded offerings in the marina store such as a beachfront candy store featuring local and nostalgic offerings.
