Hi! We have been traveling together since 2001 and have visited all 7 continents, multiple times. We started traveling together while both working full time corporate jobs until 2013 when we decided to quit our jobs and travel full time for the next 4 years. We started this blog and a media business alongside it, which is now our full time jobs. We love traveling to every corner of the planet so that we can photograph and share the stories of this world with you. Doing this has made us both award-winning photographers and writers. We hope we're able to help you travel more, and inspire you to visit places you might not have had on your bucket list.
Awesome trip guys! I’ve always wanted to do that!
Looks amazing! We are heading down the Nile in March.
I think you’re in for a fair bit more luxury than we had!! 🙂 You’ll enjoy it though. Egypt is awesome.
The Nile is the longest river in the world and bears witness to an incredible history dating back to the era of the pharaohs and one of the most influential civilizations in the world. We have always been interested in this, but now more than ever, we want to know everything we can about this vital force’s rich history and exciting culture.
We believe the best way to learn this is to live in the same area as the ancient Egyptians and use the same canal roads. We think this is the best way to reach this level of understanding. For this reason, we will tell you about the Felucca Boat, one of the most famous ways in Egypt to get around the Nile River .
On the Nile, people were moving around in boats called feluccas . In the Middle East and Africa, this method of travel was often used to get around the Nile. A felucca is a small sailing boat that has existed for hundreds of years.
The boat is made of wood and has a sailing mast made of wood. Its construction and design make it particularly good for navigating rivers, so it was an essential part of the trade taking place at the time. It soon became the primary way of getting around the Nile, transporting goods, fish, and people.
The Best way to learn about the ancient Egyptian culture that thrived along the banks of the Nile is to take the Nile Cruises. So Don’t miss booking our Best Nile River Cruises 2023
Felucca Boat Egypt is a traditional wooden boat used on the Nile River in Egypt for thousands of years. The exact origin of feluccas is unclear, but it is believed that the ancient Egyptians first used them for transportation and fishing.
Feluccas were also used by the Arab traders who traveled along the Nile, and they played an essential role in transporting goods and people throughout the region. With the arrival of modern boats and transportation, the use of feluccas declined, but they remain an essential part of Egyptian culture and tourism.
Today, feluccas are primarily used for leisure activities such as sightseeing and sunset cruises along the Nile, but they still maintain their traditional design and construction. They are typically wood and have a single sail made of cotton or linen. The sail is often decorated with colorful patterns and designs, adding to the unique and picturesque appearance of the felucca.
A felucca Boat accommodates up to 12 people and is still widely used in places like Edfu , Luxor , and Aswan . You can take a trip that gives you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to connect with the past by booking a felucca tour in the Nile. You will remember this trip for the rest of your life, and taking this tour is a great way to see the country and relax in style.
Being a non-motorized means of transportation, it depends on the Nile stream and wind, allowing us to connect with history and the river more profoundly and from a short trip of a few hours or an adventure to two days, sleeping in it.
It is an experience you cannot miss; imagine for a moment the calm of the evenings, watching the sunset and enjoying the gentle breeze of this majestic river. Unique landscapes and a special feeling that you will feel when traveling in a felucca because it will allow you to go back in time, and you will be able to experience the enormity and mysticism of the Nile.
During your trip to Felucca, you will be able to witness many communities still living like their ancestors from the banks of the Nile, and at every stop, you will be able to live with the locals, and indeed, many children will come with you. This is an excellent opportunity to live with the locals and better understand life in this pharaonic country.
Some of the options on this emblematic boat include your meals on board the Felucca, where your captain prepares a typical Egyptian meal you can enjoy. At the same time, you continue sailing and enjoy the relaxing sounds of the Nile.
The months from January to April and October to December are the best times to travel on the Nile, as you will enjoy a pleasant climate, and the Nile breeze will always be appreciated.

Spend a day sailing down the Nile in a traditional felucca in Cairo and enjoy the relaxing experience of cruising down the same river Cleopatra did so many centuries ago. Experience Cairo from the water as you sail down the Nile.
Watch the sun go down over the capital of Egypt and take in the breathtaking view of Cairo at night, or get up early, take advantage of the warm sun, and watch the sunrise over Cairo. In addition, you can organize birthday parties for yourself while you are on the Nile.
A felucca ride would be a must-do in Luxor , especially if you didn’t get there on a Nile Cruise . Feluccas are these traditional sailboats that you’ll see in large numbers on the Nile, whether in Luxor , Cairo, or Aswan . They have been used to sail the Nile since ancient times when pharaohs ruled this stretch of paradise that is now Egypt.
An experience like sailing down the tranquil waters of the majestic Nile River while watching the impressive Luxor Temple on the East Bank and the pink hills of the West Bank go by is an incredibly relaxing and thought-provoking activity that you won’t soon forget. The “corniche” is typically where one can find people peddling feluccas.
The trip to Banana Island on a felucca is consistently voted one of Luxor’s most enjoyable tourist activities. The Felucca will sail to an island located to the north of Luxor that is covered in banana plantations; the boatman will berth the Felucca off the island and take you on a short exploratory tour of the island, where you will be offered a revitalizing cup of traditional Egyptian tea and some of the tastiest, most delicious bananas you have ever tasted.
Have a wonderful time on your Felucca ride in Aswan, and don’t forget to visit the world-famous Botanical Gardens in Aswan after you’ve finished sailing around Elephantine Island .
You can also visit the Agha Khan Mausoleum , which is perched on the summit of a hill and offers a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding area of Aswan. You should be familiar with the background of the Tombs of the Nobles , which can be found across the barren hillside of the West Bank.
You can also get to know the Nubian people while boarding the Felucca. The closer you get to the banks of the Nile, the more colorful the houses will be, and you will have another opportunity to learn about the daily life of one of the people who have a significant amount of history in Egypt. And even the chance to tour a typical home in the Nubian culture.
Indeed, one of the options to learn more about this great country is to take a trip aboard a felucca; no matter what option you say, it will be an adventure worth remembering and will undoubtedly provide you with great experiences. Nile Cruise Trips offers options so you can enjoy a Felucca Boat tour.

The Felucca is a type of dhow, a traditional boat that originated in the Middle East. They are typically characterized by two tall, lateen sails, and they have been used in one form or another for thousands of years already. They have been historically important to commerce in this region, and in fact, they were the main means of water transport all the way up until the mid Twentieth Century.
These days, they are frequently the option of choice among tourists who want a relaxing, and also very quiet experience of Felucca Nile cruises.
The towering statues and obelisks of Karnak Temple stand as reminders of Egypt’s glorious past, as you sail towards these iconic sites.
The Nile River snakes its way through some of the most important archaeological sites in the world. The famed Valley of the Kings; Valley of Queens; Philae Temple and Karnak Temples are just some of the spectacular ancient sites located all along its winding path.
Nile cruise holidays are more popular than ever because unlike most things in life, Nile cruises have become increasingly affordable over the years. All Nile cruises offer travelers an opportunity to enjoy and experience what they will never forget. Making such a journey in a boat that makes no sound save for the wind in the sails and the bow cutting through the water, allows one the peace to reflect upon where they are and the significance of what they’re actually witnessing.
Watching farmers work their fields (just as they have been doing for thousands of years) from the deck on a Felucca Nile cruise while silently sailing is well and truly a magnificent experience. If a Felucca cruise is too “bare-bones” for you, and you would prefer a similar experience but which is far more comfortable and luxurious, then we would recommend a Dahabiya Nile cruise instead.
Explore Egypt your way by selecting only the attractions you want to visit
The Dahabiya Nile cruise offers an intimate and elegant journey down the Nile, combining the charm of traditional sailing with modern comforts
Many modern “Feluccas” are converted yachts that are owned and operated by private captains or by tour agencies, as are the bigger and more elegant Dahabiya boats, as seen in the picture above. Nearly all Nile River cruises , including Felucca cruises, depart from either Luxor or Aswan and head up or downriver, respectively, following much the same route as the large cruise ships.
Felucca tours can be booked for a few days or for longer than a week, and are more often than not private tours booked by families and/or small groups of friends.
Felucca Nile cruises are by their very nature smaller than the majority of the boats you will see sailing up and down this historic river. The original Feluccas (unmodified versions) can typically accommodate between 6 and 8 people, which makes them perfect for a small group of individuals who are travelling together.
Private Felucca Nile cruises can also be arranged, either through a reputable tour operator of by negotiating a price with one of the locals. However, the latter option is not recommended. It’s also worth noting that with very basic cruises, you will almost certainly have to forego any luxuries. Amenities are often very basic or sometimes almost non-existent.
These days, an increasing number of tourists are also making the journey from Aswan to Luxor or from Luxor to Aswan on Feluccas, but it can be quite a costly choice.
For a truly authentic experience, it’s really impossible to beat a Felucca cruise. You’ll be taking part in a history that spans millennia, and you will be doing so just as the people who are native to these lands have done for generations. The boats themselves represent part of Egyptian culture, and the closer to the culture one can get, the better.

Ruling the most powerful civilization on earth, Egyptian pharaohs would glide past the same braying hippos and reed-occluded crocodiles that ridge the Nile today. The heat still beats over the opulent residue of the ancient empire, best explored on a small tour down the mighty river. Bypass the modern cruises and their flaws and opt instead to glide south on a traditional felucca. Two-masted lateen sail crafts traditionally strung from reed or papyrus, feluccas carried emperors, tradesmen, and travelers through north Africa for millennia.
Sail in royal style between the ancient cities of Aswan and Luxor, traveling slowly past the myriad landscapes and isolated relics of the Nile basin. Unlike their ancestral counterparts, modern felucca tours come with toilets and hot running water, and local meals are prepared onboard, making a 2-night cruise under Saharan stars a comfortable experience. Tours set sail a short distance from Cairo, sidestepping the Egyptian capital's chaotic city center and plunging travelers straight into the tranquil heartland.
In Aswan, golden walls stand sentinel over the jutting reeds of the Nile riverbank, carefully carved homages to ancient gods. Taking the felucca route down to the southerly Egyptian city, you'll already have traversed the watery route that linked the Mediterranean titans of Egypt, Greece, and Rome with the African empires that sprawled south from Sudan. The cultural intersection is omnipresent — the regional language is spliced between Swahili and ancient Egyptian and wild Nubian jasmine scents the air. The vestiges of grandeur visible from felucca-edge offer travelers a glimpse at the worship rituals and burial practices that remained occluded from the global eye under Sahara sands for centuries.
Stretch your legs after a sailing stretch and explore the tourist-friendly city on foot. Learn about the confluence of Egyptian and Greco-Roman culture and architectural style under the Ptolemaic dynasty at the Temple of Isis. One of the last outposts of Egyptian paganism, preserving the ancient ways until the 6th century AD, the temple marks the spot where the goddess Isis found the heart of her dismembered husband.
Next, visit the vast granite Unfinished Obelisk. Abandoned under the reign of Queen Hatshepsut (1479-1458 BCE), the gargantuan construction project is now an open-air museum, offering archaeological insights into traditional stone craftmanship. From Aswan it is also possible to take a day trip to Abu Simbel, a secluded temple flanked by 65-foot sandstone guards. Here, you can see painted interiors that have retained their bright colors for thousands of years.
One of the oldest inhabited cities on Earth, and the site of the storied city of Thebes, the volume of staggering historical sites in Luxor can be overwhelming. The antithesis of hectic Cairo, Luxor challenges outsiders' perceptions of what Egypt can be. A sense of timelessness resonates through the "world's greatest open-air museum" and days can be whiled away here roaming through temples and mausoleums. Start your landbound adventure by exploring Luxor Temple. Constructed in roughly 1400 BCE, the site even held a sense of ancient wonder for 2 nd century BCE conqueror Alexander the Great. The gigantic statues of Ramesses II guarding the entryway set the precedent for the grandeur still preserved throughout.
Karnak Temple, the largest human-made temple complex in the world, is flanked instead by the Avenue of the Sphinxes. Once an imposing display of power and wealth for visitors, the 134 giant sandstone columns of Great Hypostyle Hall cast a more impressive shadow today. Wander between the 70-foot pillars, which are still meticulously carved, with drawings and hieroglyphs still painted the original blue and red after millennia have passed.
Beneath the surface of the nearby sands is one of Egypt's greatest treasures: The Valley of the Kings. The sprawling complex, housing the tombs of at least 63 pharaohs, was an active burial site from 1539 BC to 1075 BC. Haunting mummies wrapped in tattered cloth still bare their teeth from grandiose sarcophagi and paintings depicting their great achievements remain in vivid color.

Feluccas are the traditional sailboats of Egypt Nile. Egyptians and foreigners alike enjoy a relaxing felucca ride, as they are perfect for catching the breeze on a hot summer night, for brisker sails the rest of the year and watching the sunset anytime. They are ideal for an impromptu party after work, a romantic evening, and for soothing the tots on the weekends. It is not unusual for friends to get together and rent a felucca for an hour or two for a small social gathering. Such gatherings, frequently after sunset, may not do much sailing at all, but simply sit in a quiet cove where everyone can enjoy the lights on the banks and the river traffic.
The felucca has remained, over the centuries, the primary transportation of the Nile. Its ancient form still graces the river as it has done since the time of the Pharaohs. Motorized barges transport bulk material and modern cruise ships transport tourists, but the felucca remains despite modern alternatives. The felucca rarely has any form of engine and relies entirely on the breeze which builds during the day and usually subsides at night, and the Nile River’s current. Egypt is blessed with a predominant southerly wind that pushes sailboats upriver, while allowing them to return on its current downstream.
Some of the craft today are used to carry tourists who wish to enjoy an eternally peaceful journey carried along by the gentle breeze and the currents of the river. In fact, a felucca ride is very often included in many standard tours. Some feluccas even carry passengers for longer voyages of several days, but only the most adventurous tourists usually take part in these, as the accommodations are rather primitive.
Few feluccas are now made entirely of wood, but the basic layout has barely changed. They don’t have a keel as such, but a heavy center plate which can be raised in the shallows. The sails are seriously low tech affairs made of native cotton and other natural fibers.
Feluccas are usually furnished with cushions around the circumference and a table fixed in the middle; where one can surely enjoy picnic style lunch or dinner while enjoying a different view of the metropolis. Your captain tucks his Galabeya (tradition Egyptian male dress) about his waist and steers with his feet, while busily drawing and letting the sail to and fro as the vessel tacks up and down the Nile.
This is the perfect short trip if you want to enjoy the best of Egypt in an adventurous and informal style. Beginning with the Great Pyramids and Sphinx in Cairo, we see all the classic sights of Egypt. There’s Luxor and the Temple of Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, the Colossi of Memnon, and a free day in Aswan to allow an optional visit to Abu Simbel. The adventure comes in our choice of Nile transport, where we have opted for the single-masted, lateen-rigged sailing boat called the felucca. These age-old workhorses of the Nile give us the freedom to cruise between the great sites along the river, watching rural life pass us by. The winds and currents may necessitate some adjustments to the itinerary, but the schedule is designed to allow for flexibility. Throughout the trip you will be accompanied by one of our local guides who are all experts on ancient Egypt.

Welcome to Egypt, a country steeped in history, mystery, and awe-inspiring wonders. When it comes to exploring this ancient land, there are few experiences more captivating than a felucca ride on the Nile.
A felucca is a traditional wooden sailboat that has been used for thousands of years to navigate the Nile River. These iconic vessels have played a crucial role in Egypt’s history, serving as both a means of transportation and a source of livelihood for the local communities.
The Nile, often referred to as the lifeblood of Egypt, is the longest river in Africa and has been the backbone of Egyptian civilization for centuries. It stretches over 4,000 miles, flowing from south to north, providing fertile land for agriculture and sustaining millions of people along its banks.
Embarking on a felucca ride offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the country’s rich cultural heritage while experiencing the tranquility and beauty of the Nile firsthand. From the bustling city of Aswan to the ancient temples that dot the riverbanks, every moment aboard a felucca is a journey through time.
In this article, we will guide you through the enchanting world of felucca sailing, from planning your trip to experiencing the magic of an overnight journey on the river. Get ready to set sail and discover the wonders of Egypt in a way that few tourists have the chance to experience.
The history of feluccas in Egypt can be traced back to ancient times. These graceful sailboats have been an integral part of Egyptian culture and have played a significant role in the country’s maritime history.
The origins of feluccas can be dated back to the time of the Pharaohs. They were initially used as fishing boats and for transportation along the Nile. The construction of feluccas has remained largely unchanged for thousands of years, with skilled craftsmen using traditional methods and materials to build these beautiful vessels.
During the era of ancient Egypt, the Nile River served as a vital trade route, connecting different cities and regions. Feluccas played a crucial role in facilitating this trade, allowing goods and commodities to be transported easily along the river. The design of feluccas is perfectly suited to the river’s conditions, with a shallow draft and a broad sail that catches the wind to propel the boat forward.
Over time, feluccas became not only a means of transportation but also a symbol of Egyptian culture and heritage. They were often decorated with colorful fabrics and intricate patterns, showcasing the craftsmanship and artistic abilities of the boatbuilders.
In modern times, while motorized boats have become more prevalent, feluccas continue to hold a special place in the hearts of Egyptians and visitors alike. They serve as a nostalgic reminder of the past and provide a unique way to explore the Nile.
Today, feluccas are primarily used for tourism purposes, offering visitors the opportunity to experience the serenity of the river and the beauty of the Egyptian landscape. These sailboats have become an iconic symbol of Egypt, representing a connection to the country’s ancient history and the timeless allure of the Nile.
As you embark on your own felucca journey, you’ll be carrying on a tradition that has spanned centuries and paying homage to the sailors and craftsmen who have kept this maritime heritage alive. It’s a chance to step back in time and experience Egypt from a different perspective.
The Nile River has always been at the center of Egyptian civilization, earning its status as the lifeline of Egypt. It has played an essential role in shaping the country’s history, culture, and economy.
Stretching from south to north, the Nile flows through Egypt, providing a constant source of fresh water, fertile soil, and transportation. The river has sustained the growth of agriculture in the surrounding areas, making Egypt one of the most agriculturally productive regions in the ancient world.
Without the Nile, Egypt would be largely barren desert. The annual flooding of the river, known as the Nile flood, replenishes the soil and contributes to the fertility of the land. This natural phenomenon allowed ancient Egyptians to develop an advanced agricultural system, growing crops such as wheat, barley, and flax.
The Nile’s impact extends beyond agriculture. For thousands of years, it has been the nation’s principal transportation route, providing a vital connection between different cities and regions. It facilitated trade, allowing for the exchange of goods and ideas between Egypt and neighboring civilizations.
Furthermore, the Nile served as a means of communication and defense. Ancient Egyptians built forts and settlements along its banks, taking advantage of the river’s strategic value. It offered protection from invaders and allowed for a network of communication through the use of boats and sailboats like the felucca.
Today, the Nile continues to shape the lives of millions of Egyptians. It remains a significant source of water for irrigation, providing sustenance for crops and contributing to Egypt’s agricultural industry. The river is also a hub for transportation and trade, with cargo ships moving goods up and down its length.
For visitors to Egypt, the Nile offers a captivating journey through history and natural beauty. A felucca ride along the river allows you to witness the vibrant landscapes, spot wildlife, and explore archaeological sites that line its banks. It’s an opportunity to connect with the essence of Egypt and understand the profound significance of the Nile to its people.
As you embark on your felucca adventure, remember that you are not only sailing along the Nile but also sailing through time, tracing the footsteps of ancient civilizations and experiencing the enchantment of a river that has shaped the destiny of Egypt for millennia.
There is a certain allure and mystique surrounding felucca sailing that captures the hearts of adventurers and curious travelers. It offers an intimate and authentic experience of Egypt’s ancient past while immersing you in the beauty and tranquility of the Nile.
One of the unique aspects of felucca sailing is the reliance on wind power. Unlike motorized boats, feluccas depend solely on the wind to propel them forward. As you set sail on a felucca, you’ll feel a sense of connection with nature, as the wind guides you along the river’s currents.
The slow pace of a felucca allows you to fully appreciate the surroundings. You’ll have the opportunity to take in the stunning landscapes, with picturesque views of the riverbanks, lush greenery, and towering palm trees. It’s a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life and embrace a simpler, more serene way of travel.
Another captivating aspect of felucca sailing is the sense of timelessness it evokes. The design and construction of feluccas have remained unchanged for centuries, preserving the traditional craftsmanship and techniques passed down through generations. When you step aboard a felucca, you’re not just embarking on a boat; you’re stepping into a living piece of history.
A felucca journey also provides a unique perspective on the ancient sites that line the Nile. As you sail past temples and archaeological sites, you’ll have a front-row seat to witness these ancient wonders from a different angle. The peacefulness of the river enhances the mystical allure of these historical landmarks, allowing you to truly connect with the ancient past.
Moreover, feluccas offer a genuine interaction with the local communities along the Nile. As you sail past villages, you may encounter friendly waves and smiles from locals going about their daily lives. This authentic experience allows you to gain insights into the rich culture of Egypt and forge connections with the people who call the Nile home.
Whether you’re an adventurer yearning for a unique travel experience or a romantic seeking a peaceful escape, felucca sailing on the Nile promises to leave a lasting impression. The combination of nature, history, and culture creates an enchanting ambiance that will forever be etched in your memory.
So, prepare to set sail on a felucca and embark on a voyage like no other. Explore the hidden gems of Egypt, immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of the Nile, and allow the mystique of felucca sailing to transport you to a bygone era.
Before embarking on a felucca ride on the Nile, it’s important to plan and prepare for an unforgettable experience. Here are some essential considerations to keep in mind:
Consider the time of year and weather conditions when planning your felucca ride. The best time to visit Egypt and sail on the Nile is during the cooler months, from October to April, when temperatures are more comfortable. Avoid the scorching heat of summer to enjoy a pleasant journey.
Decide how long you want your felucca ride to be. Options range from a few hours to multi-day excursions. Consider your schedule and preferred level of exploration to determine the length that suits you best.
It’s advisable to book your felucca ride in advance, especially if you’re traveling during the peak tourist season. This ensures availability and allows you to secure the best prices and options.
Do your research and choose a reputable felucca operator or tour company. Look for reviews, ratings, and recommendations from fellow travelers. A reliable operator will provide experienced sailors, well-maintained boats, and a safe journey on the Nile.
Communicate with your operator to ensure a clear understanding of the itinerary, services provided, and any specific requests or requirements you may have. It’s helpful to have a common language or a translator available during the planning and sailing process.
Consider your comfort during the ride. Bring appropriate clothing, including a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. It’s also advisable to bring insect repellent for peaceful evenings on the boat. Don’t forget to bring any necessary medications or personal items you may need during the journey.
Ensure you have travel insurance that covers your felucca ride and any unforeseen circumstances. Check the policy details and discuss any specific requirements with your insurance provider.
Proper planning and preparation will ensure a smooth and enjoyable felucca ride on the Nile. By taking the time to make these arrangements, you can relax and fully immerse yourself in the beauty and wonder of Egypt’s iconic river.
Aswan, a vibrant city located in southern Egypt, is often the starting point for a felucca ride on the Nile. This bustling city offers a perfect gateway to explore the ancient wonders and natural beauty that await you along the river.
Before setting sail, take some time to explore Aswan and its iconic landmarks. Visit the Philae Temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis, which was relocated and preserved on the nearby Agilkia Island. Marvel at the grandeur of the Unfinished Obelisk, a massive stone monument that gives insights into ancient Egyptian stone-cutting techniques.
When you’re ready to board your felucca, head to the Nile Corniche, a scenic waterfront promenade that stretches along the banks of the Nile. This is where you’ll find a fleet of feluccas ready to take you on your journey.
It’s common to hire a felucca with a captain and a crew member. The captain will navigate the boat, while the crew member assists with sailing, maneuvering through the river, and maintaining the boat’s cleanliness.
Communicate with your captain and crew to discuss your preferred route and any specific sights or destinations you wish to visit along the way. They are knowledgeable about the Nile and can provide valuable insights into the history and culture of the region.
