History of the international yacht club.

The Yacht Club was launched in January of 1958. A group of interested boaters from Washington State and the Province of British Columbia met in the City Hall at Blaine, WA The common interest then, as now, was to provide more moorage in the port for pleasure boats.

The club’s first Commodore was Earl McKinney, of Blaine. Earl was succeeded by Eric Griffiths in September of 1958. Under the guidance of McKinney and Griffiths in September of 1958, the club brought pressure to bear upon the Port Commission. These foresighted charter members were instrumental in getting improvements in the harbor facilities for the boating community.

The club has maintained this initial objective over the eighteen years since its inauguration. As a result the Island of Sucia, WA was purchased by a large group of boating clubs, including the International Yacht Club, and preserved for posterity as a State Park. Somewhat closer to home, but equally, thoughtful projects that the International Yacht Club has seen through to completion are:

The island of Sucia, Wa was purchased by a large group of boating clubs (the Interclub) that included the International Yacht Club, and preserved for posterity as a State Park. This is the closeest Marine State Park (excluding Patos Island, that has limited mooring facilities) to Blaine Harbor, where the majority of members keep their boats.

Although the club was inactive from 1959 to 1970 it had one member, Myron Terry, who kept up the dues to Interclub, thereby maintaining the club’s Charter. Such foresight comes to a few people in their lifetime. Myron’s faith in the future of the club never faultered. It is no wonder that the members voted Myron and Mary Terry the first Lifetime Members in 1973 at the Commodore’s Dance at Forest Grove.

In 1970 a renewed interest in forming a club arose spontaneously. The time was ripe and the twenty who filled the International Cafe accepted Myron Terry as Chairman and Secretary. It is interesting to note that seven of the charter members were paid-up members in 1970-71. Myron kept the club active and growing through the summer and until the October election of officers.

Bright Walk in White Rock Lights Up the Waterfront this Winter

Bright Walk in White Rock will transform White Rock’s waterfront this holiday season with a free-lighted display in Memorial Park. From December 2, 2023, to January 7, 2024, head down to the beach to enjoy a stroll along the seaside and enjoy the lighted displays. In addition to the 20-foot Christmas tree, there will be new light installations featuring over 50,000 lights, an illuminated tunnel, snowflakes and an 8-foot-tall selfie frame! And the White Rock Pier will be lit up in holiday colours nightly.

The official light-up celebration is on December 2 from 4 pm to 8 pm. Visitors are invited to enjoy an evening full of live entertainment, photos with Santa, light-up robot and juggler performances, kids’ crafts, games and more.  At 4:30 pm, City of White Rock mayor, Megan Knight and members of the City council will be on hand to throw the switch and light the Christmas tree. And, between 5:00 and 7:30 pm keep an eye on the water for illuminated sailboats from the International Yacht Club of BC’s annual Sail Past!

Bright Walk in White Rock runs until January 7 … so there is lots of time to visit and enjoy the lights and the seaside, and if you’re there before December 22 take some time to visit the Christmas Craft Market at the White Rock Museum! Grab a hot chocolate at one of White Rock’s cosy coffee shops before you head to the waterfront and be sure to plan ahead and make a reservation for dinner at your favourite White Rock restaurant … many of them have covered and heated patios so you can eat and marvel at the lights … and the view of Semiahmoo Bay and the historic pier is pretty great as well!

The light display will be lit from dusk to dawn on weekdays and will be on all-day weekends and holidays.

We are very proud of our achievements thus far, but we still need your help. With the monies collected from the Council of BC Yacht Clubs members, special bequests, and private donors like you we have helped with the purchase of the 8 marine parks and enhancements to 14 since our inception.

You can get involved with the BC Marine Parks Forever Society expand BC’s marine parks by helping us raise funds, leave a legacy, work with Parks to secure and support the addition to and enhancement of marine parks on the coast of BC, help your boating organization become a regular donor, or become a Director to help us chart our future.   Every little bit  of support helps us all enjoy our beautiful marine parks.
