Lagoon 60 first look: New catamaran with several innovations

  • Toby Hodges
  • April 5, 2024

The new Lagoon 60 features hull sides that hinge down offering an extremely wide area for entertaining and relaxing at anchor

catamaran 60 ft lagoon

This full flybridge design fills a big slot that previously existed between the Lagoon 55 that was launched in 2021 and the more lavishly appointed Sixty 5. The new Lagoon 60’s huge aft cockpit can be fully opened out onto the water, including hull sides that hinge down like butterfly wings, creating an area even wider than the yacht’s generous 32ft beam allows.

There’s also a large forward cockpit on the same level as the saloon, and with direct access, making this an ideal yacht for larger parties.

Layout options include five cabins with a bridgedeck galley, or four cabins with the galley in the port hull, accessed by its own stairs. This version also has a smaller bar area on the bridgedeck, along with a larger saloon.

As with the 55, the rig is stepped further forward than on earlier models and is fitted with overlapping headsails. Naval architect VPLP says these offer more flexibility and efficiency on a boat of this type than the near ubiquitous non-overlapping jibs of today’s yachts.

The towering air draught of almost 100ft (30m) allows a generous sail area, even though the flybridge means the boom of this multi-story vessel is several metres above the waterline. Despite an unladen displacement of 32 tonnes, if the Lagoon 55 and 51 (launched 2022) are anything to go by, the Lagoon 60 will sail a lot better than the enormous windage suggests.

It’s a format that’s now well proven – Lagoon celebrates 40 years in business this year and has built more than 7,000 yachts. The first Lagoon 60 is already complete and will initially premiere at an open event at the yard in Bordeaux, rather than at La Grande Motte. It will feature Lagoon’s innovative new furling boom system for easier sail handling.

Lagoon 60 catamaran

After admiring the initial renderings at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2023, the new Lagoon 60 has now made its official debut. The worldwide premiere presentation took place during Lagoon’s exclusive days in Bordeaux in March 2024.

Lagoon’s new 60-foot sailing catamaran fits in between the 55 and the Sixty5, bolstering the range in the luxury segment where the shipyard is increasingly making its mark in the market. The true innovation for the Lagoon range lies in the collapsible stern bulwarks, which open up to the sea, expanding the living area in the stern. The idea is to create a real terrace on the sea.

Lagoon 60 catamaran

The Lagoon 60 is a catamaran that stands out for its solutions that make life on board extremely comfortable, such as the ability to move from the bow sofas through the dinette. The flybridge, as with all Lagoons, is the control area with all maneuvers at hand, but above all, it’s a place to enjoy privacy and relaxation thanks to the spacious lounge and sunbathing areas.

The stern terraces open up, facilitating access on board and increasing the living space at anchor. Access to the stern cockpit is provided from the swim platform via new and wider angled stairs.

The waterlines of the Lagoon 60 were designed by the French studio Van Peteghem-Lauriot Prévost (VPLP), while the exterior design was entrusted to Patrick Le Quément, and the interior design to Nauta Design . The interiors of the Lagoon 60 are spacious and bright.

Baltic 130 My Song

Two configurations are available, with 4 or 5 cabins depending on whether the kitchen is located in the lounge or below deck. The owner’s cabin is located in the maximum beam of the starboard hull, while in the bow of each hull, there are two VIP cabins and crew cabins.

Description

catamaran 60 ft lagoon

THE SCENARIO OF YOUR DREAMS

Lagoon catamarans.

The wide platforms of the Lagoon 60 and his inviting aft cockpit reveals its full potential. Life on board has never been so promising.

Lagoon Catamarans completed the range of 12 to 18 m with a new 60′

A rear access has been completely revised with three steps mounted at an angle which enlarge the rear platforms. The aft peak bulwarks lower to form a sort of beach club, extended by the tenderlift.

The whole thing is very open from the aft transom, in line with the program of these boats which is oriented towards relaxation.

At the front, a decked forward cockpit appears. Equipped with a deck lounge with optional table, a sunbathing area, the forward cockpits allow breakfast in full sun while offering a new common space. This cockpit is accessed through a door leading into the saloon.

The flybridge goes into XXL mode with the steering position roughly in the middle, forward, a very large sunbathing area and aft, the saloon terrace and its outdoor kitchen.

Sailboat Review: Lagoon Sixty 5

  • By Herb McCormick
  • November 8, 2022

Lagoon Sixty 5 right side

Of all the tweaks and changes in the design and layout of large cruising catamarans , surely the most innovative has been the addition of the flybridge steering station and “upstairs” lounging space. To be perfectly honest, the feature took a while to grow on me. At first, it was a matter of aesthetics: What in the name of Herreshoff was that mainsail gooseneck doing a story or two up in the sky?

But as I sailed a few flybridge-equipped cats, particularly the Lagoon 620—the predecessor to the brand’s latest rangy cat, the Sixty 5—it dawned on me that my issue was a matter of perspective. The beauty of the flybridge isn’t obvious when you’re looking at it . The brilliance becomes clear when you’re experiencing the wide-open waters and 360-degree views of the horizon while perched upon it.

The 67-plus-foot Sixty 5 has a wide, well-reasoned platform high above the seas. Its commanding panoramas are just the beginning. Twin helms with comfy, upholstered bench seating, as well as the engine controls and chart plotters, flank a quartet of Harken winches, all of which are canopied by a solid overhead Bimini. The traditional mainsail is trimmed with the aid of a continuous-line traveler, also led to the Harkens. Unfortunately, our test sail was conducted in middling breeze, but we still made a solid 5 knots under the code-zero headsail in just 7 knots of wind.

Happily, there were other attractions to hold our attention, especially the “topside galley” with a fridge, a sink, an ice maker, a Kenyon grill, and enough seating to open your own waterborne cafe. As for steering, there’s a second indoor station in the saloon controlled by the B&G autopilot, negating the need to venture aloft for course adjustments.

Back at sea level, owners have many choices and options. There can be four, five or six staterooms; the galley can be up in the saloon or down in the hull; and there are numerous styles of Alpi wood finishes and upholstery—all of which you’d expect on a vessel with a price tag north of $3 million. The owner’s staterooms, in particular, are sumptuous.

Construction, as with the entire nine-model Lagoon line from 40 to 78 feet length overall, is straightforward: a balsa-cored laminate in both the hull and deck, with polyester and vinylester incorporated into the layup. The teak decks are a classy touch that you don’t usually encounter on a catamaran. There’s a pair of gensets, one of which addresses the overall house needs and a second dedicated to the individual air-conditioning units scattered hither and yon. A pair of 150 hp Yanmars is standard, though our test boat had been upgraded to twin 195 hp diesels coupled with Flexofold props.

The cat’s profile is striking, with a straight stem on the bow to maximize waterline length and the coach roof’s familiar turret-style brow—a signature Lagoon feature. There’s a cool forward cockpit for lounging and reading, offset by an aft cockpit with seating and a dining area. The integrated bowsprit is another sweet touch, allowing for a triple-headsail arrangement for easily shifting gears depending on wind strength and direction.

Lagoon is presently building about 20 boats a year. All have gone to private owners, not charter companies, though many owners are offering their boats with full crews from five to 10 weeks a year, to offset expenses. It’s a business model that’s tried-and-true with the superyacht set. The Sixty 5 is a lot of boat to handle, and nearly all owners will employ a hired captain, and chef and mate, who have their own dedicated quarters aboard.

But let’s return to that flybridge. I’ve always wanted to experience what it feels like to have the conn on a big freighter or cruise ship, with the long scans and endless ocean vistas. Since sailing the Lagoon Sixty 5, I think I know.

Lagoon 60 - World Premiere at home in Bordeaux

Avatar de Emmanuel van Deth

Multihulls World #194

Two years: that’s how long it’s taken to complete the Lagoon 60 project from A to Z - the replacement for the emblematic 630, that has seen unrivalled success in this size of catamaran (169 sailing models and another 58 examples of the 630 MY, the power version!).  Seeking to ride a powerful wave of events motivated by the celebration of the shipyard’s 40th anniversary, Lagoon organized a world premiere event at home, at one of the Bordeaux yard’s platforms, where all models over 50 feet are built.

The waterfront event was intended to be festive and even celebratory, with the presence of former international basketball player Boris Diaw, the brand’s ambassador. Lagoon also took the opportunity to showcase their full range of 40 to 77-foot yachts, both afloat and ashore.

In terms of outline, the new 60-foot model, as ever signed by VPLP, presents a silhouette relatively similar to that of the 55, except that the sail plan uses the overlapping genoa of the latest 51. The main innovation on deck concerns the aft cockpit, literally transformed into a beach club by eliminating the traditional bench seat. This enormous surface area is further enlarged by an aft platform and fold-down bulwarks. As for relaxation space, the forward cockpit and huge flybridge, equipped with a full galley, are not to be outdone. For the interior, the designers have managed to ensure totally flush circulation from one cockpit to the other, including of course the nacelle - a floor without steps, and that changes everything! We've already booked our sea trial of the Lagoon 60, which will be undertaken off Palma de Mallorca in June - stay tuned! LAGOON 60 Redefining The 60-foot Sailing Catamaran Experience

LAGOON 60 Redefining The 60-foot Sailing Catamaran Experience

Discover unparalleled luxury with the Lagoon 60, the latest release from Lagoon Catamarans. Boasting an expansive flybridge, saloon bathed in natural light, fluid layouts, and innovative opening side terraces, this 60 footer is unlike anything on the market.

Quentin Beraut, Lagoons Project Manager explains, "The Lagoon 60 will be the link between our 55 and the SIXTY 5, drawing inspiration from both models.” The team integrated the innovative design of the 55's rear half, especially the cockpit area that resonates deeply with the ocean, and blended it with notable features from the Lagoon SIXTY 5, like the forward door, achieving a seamless fusion of the finest elements from both models.

SIDE TERRACES

The Lagoon 60’s aft cockpit seamlessly merges boat and sea, offering over 36 m² of expansive freedom. Its crowning innovation, opening side terraces, invites effortless dives into the ocean while simplifying the boarding process. These terraces, combined with gently inclined aft steps, ensure a harmonious balance of style and functionality. Every moment aboard the Lagoon 60 connects you directly to the horizon and the sea’s embrace.

The saloon, a nexus of modularity and openness, is bathed in natural light from expansive vertical windows. Whether you desire a galley or bar, the space adapts, encapsulating Lagoon’s promise of connecting spaces, all while maintaining an individual, unique atmosphere. To starboard, the owner’s cabin offers a serene retreat. Illuminated generously, it boasts an ensuite bathroom shielded by sliding doors, ensuring privacy and providing direct access to the aft cockpit.

The Lagoon 60, offers an uninterrupted flow from cockpit to foredeck, presenting a singular, levelled expanse. From the saloon, a gateway opens to the forward cockpit, gracing you with panoramic views.

“A vast forward cockpit, flush with the saloon, reinforces the harmony between interior and exterior living spaces.”  – VPLP Design.

The Lagoon 60's flybridge is enormous and incredibly functional, coming close to the size of the SIXTY 5. Spanning a vast area, this space offers ample room for dining, lounging, and a bar, perfect for sunset cocktails. Positioned strategically, the helm station provides excellent visibility, enhancing the boat's manoeuvrability. As Quentin Beraut insightfully remarks, "The flybridge is huge, and it’s one big level space and one of the highlights of this new model."

John Cowpe, TMG Yachts Managing Director, marvels at the innovation, saying, “Larger boats are becoming easier to handle short-handed, reducing the need for crew and maximising privacy onboard. This is something we are seeing the Australian market is looking for and the Lagoon 60 embodies this. This new 60-footer is a testament to forward-thinking design and a game-changer in the sailing catamaran world."

The security deposit varies in value depending on the model and brand of the boat. It will be returned to you after the boat has been inspected and is deemed undamaged.

  • Lagoon Launches New 60-Foot Cruising Cat

This year, Lagoon Catamarans is celebrating its fortieth year in business and, with more than 7,000 catamarans built during that span, they have a lot to be proud of. The French builders has been a prime mover in the multihull revolution that has completely changed the make-up of cruising and charter fleets around the world.

As an important part of the 2024 celebrations, the builder is launching a new VPLP 60-foot cruising cat that neatly fills the gap in their fleet between the 55 and Sixty 5.

The new 60, which has a 32-foot beam, has a full flying bridge deck that will become the yacht’s fair weather living space. Forward, guests will enjoy lounging on the full-width play pen, while aft they can have meals at the L-shaped dinette. The bridge also has a wet bar and mini-galley.

catamaran 60 ft lagoon

On the main deck, the aft cockpit, saloon and forward cockpit are all on one level so when the saloon doors are open the whole area becomes a massive living space. Also, the cockpit aft has fold-down side bulkheads that add even more deck space.

The dining table in the cockpit will seat eight guests, while the dinette in the saloon will seat six. The 60 is definitely a boat designed for entertaining large groups.

The layout comes in either a five-cabin version with the galley in the saloon or a four-cabin version that has the galley down in the aft end of the port hull. The down galley has its own entrance from the cockpit.

The up galley will appeal to families who like to cook and eat together while the down galley will be perfect for owners who sail with a captain and cook or for crewed yacht charters.

catamaran 60 ft lagoon

The forward end of the salon has a huge L-shaped sofa that will easily sit eight or 10 people.  The saloon windows are large so even when seated on the sofa or at the dining table, the views will be magnificent.

The 60’s mast has been shifted forward when compared to more recent Lagoon designs and VPLP has designed an overlapping headsail instead of the more common self-tacking jib. With a 100-foot air draft, the rig provides plenty of power to propel the 32-ton hull.

And, because the boom is nearly 20 feet above the waterline and well above the flying bridge’s hard top, Lagoon has developed their own in-boom mainsail furling system; the big sail can be dropped and stowed without the need for human hands to flake it.

The new 60 made its debut in Bordeaux in April and will be at all the fall boat shows. She is a magnificent example of all that Lagoon has achieved over the last 40 years.
