How the Spectacular Superyacht Scout is Making Waves

Named for one of her owners’ dogs, Scout is a base from which they can explore the world.

In 2019, over 150 brand-new superyachts were delivered; one of the standout designs of the year was the 209-ft yacht Scout , built for owner James Berwind and his partner, Kevin Clark. Named for one of her owners’ beloved dogs, she is set to be a semi-permanent base from which they can explore the world — canine companions  and all.

The story of Scout begins with a simple napkin. “We started with a sketch on a napkin before interviewing any designers,” say Berwind and Clark. “Our wish list was to have a capable, comfortable explorer to travel the world, and we got a long-range ice-classed yacht with ample crew and guest areas, advanced systems for fuel efficiency, telecommunications and responsible waste management.” From the moment of that very first sketch, the couple was extremely hands on throughout every stage of the build, resulting in an incredibly personal yacht. “During the build we were involved 110%, in every aspect of the project,” they say.

Once they’d developed an initial concept for the yacht, a range of designers were approached, with UK-based H2 Yacht Design eventually being commissioned for both the exterior and interior design. “Jonny Horsfield was a fantastic collaborator; he and his team executed our vision impeccably,” say Berwind and Clark. The decision was made to build at Hakvoort Shipyard in the Netherlands; Scout is now the biggest yacht that the 100-year-old yard has built to date.

Scout ’s fun detailing and a quirky design approach, paired with a contemporary and practical layout, make the yacht eminently usable while still bursting with personality. “ Scout ’s design was influenced by Fritz Lang’s Metropolis , the interiors of Jules Verne’s Nautilus submarine, every James Bond villain’s lair, with a touch of Looney Tunes ,” say Berwind and Clark. “Everything about the interior focuses on the outside views with abundant windows and sliding glass walls.”

Her distinct exterior design pairs hardy explorer capabilities, striking lines and a hint of trawler influence. While this sounds slightly odd on paper, in real life it works in a stunning way. This is a yacht with her own style — inside and out — that turns heads wherever she goes. Distinctive design elements include a high freeboard, exposed tenders in the bow with cut-down bulwarks and integrated forward-sloping windows.

Her gray hull and white superstructure are complemented by playful pops of yellow. “She is a very unique vessel that really captures the owners’ passion for being on the water and their fun outlook on yachting,” says Captain Kynan McDonald. “It’s been an exciting project to be a part of.”

On board the yacht, in addition to her owners, Scout is able to welcome up to eight guests in four cabins, each with its own nautical-inspired theme. The main deck is a focal guest space, with a beautiful main saloon that includes an LCD ceiling that mirrors the outside scenes. Complementing the main saloon is a large winter garden — a social hub that is perfect for year-round use, thanks to frameless glass panels that provide shelter when needed and retract when not in use, plus full air conditioning.

The winter garden space features a cocktail bar for sharing fresh beverages and a dining table for 14; it’s no surprise that this is a favorite spot for hosting. Aft of the winter garden is an intimate C-shaped fire pit that’s ideal for gathering around as the sun sets, with atmospheric flames flickering in front of the horizon.

A beautiful private owner’s apartment is accessed via a library studded with nautical-themed artifacts. The apartment is a stylish retreat with multiple spaces including an observation lounge forward — this characterful space includes a hidden bar area within a globe structure, seating around stone-topped tables inset with constellations and a carbon fiber squid sculpture by British artist Alistair Gibson hanging from the ceiling. The owners’ full-beam bedroom suite has two large bathrooms, walk-in closets and frosted full-length windows to port and starboard.

The master suite leads out to what the owners affectionately call “Puppy Park,” a custom-designed garden area for their two dogs, Scout and Brio, to enjoy. With their pets set to be on board for long stretches of time, it was very important to design the boat with this specialist usage in mind. “The dogs have their own ‘yard,’ all materials on board are pet-friendly, and all access points, such as the gates, scuppers and door sensors, are ‘puppy proofed,’” say Berwind and Clark. This passion for animals also extended to the construction of the yacht itself. “As animal rights activists, we used no animal-based materials — no fur, no hide, no bone, etc. — on board.”

Above the main deck, the bridge deck is home to the modern bridge, which has sophisticated operating systems and comfortable seating for those wanting to watch the captain at work. This deck also features another very personal space — dubbed the ‘greenhouse’ — which has been designed around the owners’ passion for gardening, and includes its own potting shed, sink and gardening equipment.

Outdoors, a favorite spot has proved to be the vast, multipurpose sundeck. “We live up there with our guests and dogs, and we also love the open fore to aft space,” say Berwind and Clark. The sundeck is an impressive open space, even by superyacht standards, with features including an inviting Jacuzzi and sweeping views across the ocean.

A helipad on the foredeck allows guests to arrive and depart in style by chopper, while an impressive crane ensures easy deployment of the vessel’s two 26-ft tenders. A packed lineup of toys and water equipment ensures that Scout ’s guests can enjoy their ocean playground no matter where they cruise. The yacht’s custom limousine tender, built by Cockwells, has been finished in the same color scheme as Scout and can carry up to 10 guests while reaching a thrilling top speed of 37 knots.

While the average superyacht is used for just six weeks a year, Scout will buck the trend, with her owners hoping to spend up to seven months of the year on board: It will be a true home away from home. “We plan to use Scout as our primary home for the next several years and hope to travel extensively wherever, whenever, with safety as a primary concern,” say Berwind and Clark.

“Bucket list locations include the British Isles, the Far East and Hawaii .” With her ice-classed hull, very little of the world will be off limits, and there is no doubt that her owners are set to enjoy cruising on board just as much as they enjoyed the build process. Scout truly embodies the endless possibilities of custom yacht building where, if you can dream it, it can be made a reality.

Inside the fantastical 64m Hakvoort explorer Scout

The 63.7m Hakvoort explorer Scout is a beautiful home away from home for an adventurous owner, his partner and their canine companions, writes Marilyn Mower

There is a sense of purpose to Scout – well, actually, more than one purpose. With her high bow, massive grey hull and towering decks, it’s hard not to get the sense that this nearly 64-metre yacht is meant for open seas and far horizons. Scout is the largest yacht – by length and volume – delivered by the 100-year-old Hakvoort yard. Big shoulders, in the form of a sundeck arch, wrap down around the superstructure while a helipad atop the mooring deck says she’s serious about going places. But, as you get to know this boat more intimately, it becomes clear that her nature is anything but coldly utilitarian.

Scout ’s role is to be a safe and secure floating home on which owner James Berwind and his partner, Kevin Clark, will spend about seven months a year, accompanied by their rescue dogs named Brio and Scout. “We want to enjoy the sea and the fresh air and travel with our dogs. We live casually outdoors so a yacht suits us; it’s a vehicle to take us places,” Berwind says. On the itinerary: the Caribbean, the British Isles, the fjords of Scandinavia and Hawaii (for starters).

His previous yacht was a 45-metre full-displacement, drawn and styled by Ron Holland, with a quasi-explorer look and a large open top deck. “We knew we did not want the white wedding cake look,” says Clark. “We don’t have a need to conform and we don’t take ourselves that seriously.”

And, aside from top-drawer mechanicals and hefty construction specifications, neither does the yacht. Which brings us to Scout ’s other purpose: fun. There are fantasy elements reminiscent of how the future was once imagined à la Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870) and Fritz Lang’s classic 1927 film Metropolis . Throw in Atlantis, the futuristic underwater lair of 007’s nemesis in the 1977 film The Spy Who Loved Me , and place it against a modernist backdrop spiced with imaginative custom furniture and you have an interior that delights at every turn.

H2 Yacht Design’s  Jonny Horsfield, who styled the yacht inside and out, is the first to say it’s like nothing he’s ever done before. There are so many clever details that it’s hard to take it all in. And that’s exactly the point. This is a home rather than a holiday pad and it must keep its occupants engaged and entertained for months on end.

It was broker Stuart Larsen of Fraser who helped Berwind develop bid requirements for a yacht of 60 to 65 metres and then suggested he interview several design firms. Must-haves included a large sundeck. “We live on the sundeck – that was the one thing we borrowed from the previous boat,” says Berwind. “We had two requirements for that deck: elevator access and a dayhead. But I was adamant that it be completely open from front to back. During interviews, the designers we talked to kept trying to put a small house in the middle. When I told Jonny it had to have a dayhead and an elevator and still be totally open, he said, ‘Well there’s only one way to do that – move them outboard and incorporate them into the arch’,” remembers Berwind, who secretly had this in mind. “He got the job on the spot.”

Then they set to work sketching the rest of the boat, the profile taking on its husky masculine look. Berwind’s first pencil sketch, on a sheet of lined paper, hangs framed in the wheelhouse. It looks unmistakably like the finished product. “Jonny was very easy to work with and we were very lucky to have found him,” says Berwind.

Larsen sent his client’s bid request to several yards and all replied with a new-build package, price and time frame. Hakvoort, however, added an intriguing second bid, offering to build the boat on an ice-classed steel hull, drawn by the respected Dutch studio Diana Yacht Design , that had already been started.

“Noting the dimensions of the stopped project were quite similar to that of the Scout bid, I projected Jonny’s layout on this hull,” recalls Klaas Hakvoort. “That was in August 2015 and at the Fort Lauderdale show, they signed the letter of intent.” Berwind adds: “The superstructure that had been started and the layout nothing like we wanted but the idea of saving time, we thought perhaps as much as a year, was attractive, especially when we realised we could have 95 per cent of what we wanted on this hull.”

And so building Scout began by unbuilding the other boat first, starting with removing its nascent superstructure and reworking the transom for a better beach club and a dive store. Horsfield’s design called for more windows and skylights and Hakvoort notes that required a different framing plan to accommodate the larger openings.

“The crane on the foredeck was quite a feat as well,” he adds. Nautical Structures was the only supplier willing to attempt the unique knuckle-boom crane, with an 8,000kg lifting capacity that would fit the length of a new forward tender bay (behind a raised helipad) and maintain a low enough profile for forward visibility from the lounge. The entire area was strengthened down to the keel to support the crane and helicopter load and all of the bulwarks were enclosed for the safety of the dogs. In all, Hakvoort says the build required 80,000 work-hours of metal reconstruction.

“Did we actually save a lot of time? No. But I would absolutely do this again. The fixed hull gave limitations to the project and kept us from saying, ‘Let’s add a little more here or there.’ We looked at the hull as a foundation to a house; everything other than the footprint was ours to define,” says Berwind.

“James wanted the boat to look as if it had had another life before it became a yacht,” explains Horsfield, which explains some old-fashioned ship gauges among the decor and doors that recall watertight compartment doors on cargo vessels. Yet everything is finely finished rather than gnarled. “He definitely didn’t want a Disney boat, but he wanted furniture with stories. These are fun clients with a sense of humour. The owner trained as an architect and design interests him. My job was to listen to him and put his thoughts into something that could be built.”

The yacht’s main saloon establishes that Verne/Lang/Fleming influence immediately with its fantastical furniture and decor. Forward of the saloon is the main lobby and a starboard-side guest entrance. Carpeted stair treads – one of the few carpeted surfaces aboard and a concession to the dogs – wrap around a clear glass lift while forward are four guest cabins, identical in size but given distinctive colour schemes via mosaic tiles keyed to a photograph of a sea creature above each bed’s headboard. Each guest room has pairs of oversized windows of toughened glass that do not require storm ports for crossings.

While there are outdoor dining options on the main deck and sundeck – each with adjacent bars – there is no indoor dining room, a growing trend. “We didn’t have a formal dining room on our last boat. We turned a VIP cabin into a dining space, but I had no intention of doing that here,” notes Berwind. “I thought possibly of enclosing the upper aft deck but then got the idea of making the forward lounge convertible. The only time we’ll use it for dining is when we have to.”

The observation lounge, with its view over the tenders, is a light, bright, multi-use space to retreat to if cold or storms force the owners off their beloved sundeck. Two round tables, with stone tops inset with constellations, are flanked by L-shaped forward-facing love seats and casual high-backed chairs in tweed, all on a slightly raised teak and holly platform. A high-top table and two stools tuck up against the forward windows. Overhead, three skylights pour light into the room and over a “squid” sculpture, created by Alastair Gibson from carbon fibre and Formula 1 car parts.

The aft bulkhead is faced with curio shelves, flanking an unusual bar: when closed it appears as a large globe, but it slides open in sections along lines of longitude to reveal shelves for drinks or snacks, storage for glasses and a drawer for plates. Aft of the lounge is a large and well-thought-out service pantry that links to the crew’s centre of circulation on port with a full-size fridge, dishwasher and loads of counter space for final plating. A lift for a full-size food cart connects this pantry to the galley on the lower deck. Storage, crew spaces and circulation pathways are large at the owner’s direction.

The master suite is entered through a library packed with an eclectic section of books, nautical antiques and miniature steam engines plumbed to run on compressed air. Much of  Scout ’s artwork is a collection of collages by New York artist William Steiger, who Berwind first encountered on Instagram. Steiger’s collages are made by meticulously hand-cutting paper, including nautical and star charts, with X-Acto blades. The pieces are painted with transparent layers of gouache before being glued down in layers to create the final collaged image. The collection includes channel markers, turbines and machinery, sextants, vintage diving helmets, propellers, compasses, seaplanes and the Atlantis from the Bond film.

“I sent him subjects that I wanted to include but he found the images and made the collages from them using the charts as backgrounds,” says Berwind. “The industrial/mechanical themes of his work really fit Scout .”

From this quiet space, with grey oak walls and a shaggy carpet evoking seagrasses, a corridor leads past large bathrooms port and starboard and their attendant dressing areas. Frosted floor-to-ceiling glass panels brighten the corridor with light from the bathrooms while maintaining privacy. Art sits in dark-stained lacewood niches surrounded by faux leather panelling. The master suite is the size of a Manhattan studio apartment and it seems even larger given the private terrace or “puppy park” beyond. The aft-facing bed is backed by panels of bubble glass and the high-gloss ceiling is sculpted to mimic waves.

From the puppy park, stairs lead to the deck above where the yacht shelters a one-of-a-kind greenhouse. This is Berwind’s “me space”, with an enclosed teak shade house with slats for hanging plants in baskets and a potting shed on starboard with a sink and room for garden tools and pots. A passionate gardener, Berwind delights in caring for the yacht’s many plants.

The bridge is another popular spot and Captain Kynan McDonald had free rein to design it. His choice was for a ship-like arrangement with a floating console. Not only does this give critical visibility at night but it means all of the equipment can be easily accessed from the rear. A large chart table separates two raised sofas for guests or an extra watch.

Leading-edge security systems were integrated on board to suit Scout’ s intent for global expedition. “If you are going to have an expedition boat, advanced security is something you have to plan for,” says McDonald. And for owners who are now able to see the world at their own pace by taking their home and their furry friends with them, it’s the final bit of extra planning that makes everything possible.

A luxury superyacht moored in Belfast since last Wednesday has caught the attention of the public.

The Scout is a 63 metre vessel owned by the US millionaire James Berwind, part of the family-owned Berwind Corporation.

It’s understood the American businessman has been on an Irish tour with his partner Kevin Clark in recent weeks, with the yacht spotted in both Cork and Dublin.

He also has business interests in Northern Ireland, with Dundonald firm Sepha part of the Berwind Corporation's extensive portfolio of interests.

The superyacht was built in 2018 by Hakvoort Shipyards in the Netherlands, with interior and exterior design work carried out by H2 Yacht Design in London.

While onlookers have been admiring the yacht from the outside, industry publication Boat Shopping International has cataloged its interior, allowing us to glimpse what an $85m yacht looks like inside.

Detroit  — If you find yourself walking along the Detroit River today and see a huge boat, it's not the Detroit Princess. Not even close.

You're looking at Scout, an $85 million yacht owned by the Berwind Corp.

Its Berwind-White Coal Mining Co. is one of the nation's leading coal producers, according to their website . James Berwind, son of corporation founder Charles, is the owner of Scout.

James Berwind is an environmental architect and animal-rights activist with an estimated net worth of $500 million.

Spotted on the Detroit River on Thursday, she is an eye-catcher. Built in 2019 by H2 Yacht Design, Scout can accommodate up to 10 guests and a crew as large as 14. 

Powered by two Caterpillar engines, Scout can reach speeds of 15 knots, which equates to about 17 miles per hour.

It's currently parked at the Detroit Yacht Club on Belle Isle after traveling here from Put-in-Bay, Ohio. The club's harbormaster said the visit was unplanned and the yacht will be docked at the club until Monday.

A $65million superyacht owned by an American billionaire has docked in Belfast.

The Scout is owned by John Berwind. It arrived in Belfast, docking just beside the Odyssey after sailing from Dublin.

Built in 2019 in the Netherlands, the vessel is 63metres long, and styled as a "rugged explorer" style yacht.

It has a crew of 11 and can accommodate 14 guests. It has four guest bedrooms as well as an owner's deck. Other features include a helideck, cinema, gym, three bars as well as an expansive sun deck complete with large Jacuzzi.

The yacht was commissioned by the Heineken family, it is reported before being purchased by Berwind.

It is said to cost in the region of £5m a year to run.

Berwind's family established an American mining corporation in Pennsylvania in the 1800s before moving into manufacturing and real estate, pharma, chemicals and plastics.

The company also includes the TASI Group which controls businesses worldwide including Sepha which is based in Dundonald.

Berwind is an architect and understood to be holidaying in Ireland. He reportedly named the yacht after his beloved dog.

He and partner Kevin Clark use it as a semi-permanent base to allow them to explore the world, it has been reported.

They have dedicated their lives to philanthropy, environmentalism and animal welfare.

A billionaire who is the heir to a massive fortune recently pulled his yacht into Kinsale in the hopes of getting a pint.

Superyacht 'Scout' is anchored outside of the famous Dock pub, inhabiting a lot of the Castlepark Marina, becoming the first superyacht of the summer to visit Cork Harbour, Cork Beo reports.

The 209ft superyacht was made in Holland in 2019 - supposedly commissioned by members of the Heineken family (yes, THAT Heineken) but purchased by American James Berwind in 2020 for close to €80 million.

Up to 10 guests and 14 staff can be accommodated. It is considered one of the coolest yachts in the world. It has amenities such as a fully equipped gym, cinema room, three bars and a large sun deck with a jacuzzi.

The Florida man is an heir to a vast, shared family fortune and with his brothers and sisters, co-owns an international global corporation.

His famous forebears Edward Julius and Charles Frederick Berwind were the founders of the Berwind-White Coal Mining company in America in the 1860s.

This developed into a mining conglomerate that it still privately kept in a family trust today.

It has moved into areas including manufacturing and real estate. The Berwind Corporation's real estate holdings alone are worth an estimated $3 billion.

James Berwind and his long-time partner Kevin Clark have given their lives to philanthropy, with animal welfare and environmentalism to the fore.

His father Charles Graham Berwind was in the coal business and enjoyed polo and yachting.

With a net worth of around €500 million, James Berwind is an architect supporting projects and people involved in environmental and community development worldwide.

He is reported to have made the yacht Scout a "semi-permanent home, to be used to explore the world" along with his long-term partner Kevin Clark. And you might see the man around Kinsale over the coming days, the yacht has dropped in after a visit to Dublin and will be on its way again shortly.

If you're missing the mega-hit TV drama Succession - you should take a trip to Kinsale to have a look at the real thing, in the form of the superyacht Scout and its billionaire owner, heir to a massive, shared family fortune.

The gorgeous yacht 'Scout' is tied up in front of the famous Dock pub this morning, taking up quite a lot of the Castlepark Marina as it becomes the first super-yacht of the summer to visit Cork Harbour.

The Scout as an impressive 209ft superyacht built in Holland in 2019 - originally, it is believed, to a design specified by the members of the Heineken family (yes, THAT Heineken) but bought by American James Berwind in 2020 for a price believed to be around €80m.

A deep ocean cruiser, she can comfortably cater for up to 10 guests and 14 staff and with its classic lines and relatively subdued design (for a superyacht at least) is considered one of the coolest yachts in the world. The fact that it has amenities including a fully equipped gym, cinema room, 3 bars, and a huge sun deck with a jacuzzi also helps on the desirability front.

However, it's the story of the owner, James Berwind (believed to be in Kinsale with his beloved Scout, named for one of the family dogs) that is even more fascinating.

The Florida-based Berwind is an heir to a vast, shared family fortune and with his brothers and sisters, part owner of an international global corporation - but he has forged a very different path in life to his father and grandfather before him.

His famous forebears Edward Julius and Charles Frederick Berwind were the founders of the Berwind-White Coal Mining company in America in the 1860s, which became a vast mining conglomerate that it still privately held in a family trust today. It has diversified from mining into areas including manufacturing and real estate. The Berwind Corporation's real estate holdings alone are worth around $3bn dollars.

However, while the family made its fortune in fossil fuels - James Berwind and his long-time partner Kevin Clark have devoted themselves to philanthropy, mostly focused on animal welfare and environmentalism, a path that could hardly be more different from that chosen by his coal-baron forebears.

His father Charles Graham Berwind was in the coal business and kept up the family passions for pastimes like Polo and Yachting.

With a personal fortune estimated to be around €500m and as a part of the family trust overseeing the Berwind Corporation, James Berwind is an architect who - along with his siblings - runs the international philanthropy foundation Spring Point Partners , supporting projects and people involved in environmental and community development worldwide.

Their mission is equality, justice and protecting the environment, a far cry from their forebears who made their vast family wealth in the coal mines of the United States.

And James himself, who sold his Palm Beach, Florida water-side mansion for $26.7m in 2021, has founded and runs several animal shelters and charities that protect vulnerable animals.

He is reported to have made the yacht Scout a 'semi-permanent home, to be used to explore the world" along with his long-term partner Kevin Clark. And you might see the man around Kinsale over the coming days, the yacht has dropped in after a visit to Dublin and will be on its way again shortly.

Scout Yacht 101: An Insider’s Guide

The Scout yacht was built by Hakvoort Shipyards in the Netherlands back in the year 2019. Both the interior and exterior design work was done by English design house H2 Yacht Design with naval architecture by Diana Yacht Design. Ownership of the yacht actually changed hands during the construction process in 2018. It started life as Project Zeus and then was changed to Project Brio when a new owner took over, before finally being christened Scout when it was finished. 

Who is the Scout Yacht Owner?

Scout is owned by James Berwind, philanthropist and heir to the Berwind Corporation. His net worth is estimated at around $500 million and, along with his partner Kevin Clark, he purchased the Scout for them and their rescue dogs. The name of the yacht is not one that sounds unusual at first, especially for an expedition yacht but it’s actually named after Berwind’s dog. One of the features of the yacht is actually a custom sculpture of Scout the dog.

Unlike some yacht owners, Berwin and Clark spend a lot of time on this yacht,essentially living on it as it suits their outdoor and travel-loving lifestyle. Berwind has said that the idea for the yacht came to him and Clark during a conversation about what they’d want and sketching it out on a napkin, well before they even spoke to a designer.

How Big is the Yacht Scout?

The Scout is an expedition yacht that clocks in at 209’1” in length. Not nearly the longest yacht in the world but definitely something that qualifies as a superyacht based on the length alone. In addition to the length, it’s got a beam of 36’9” and weighs in with a gross tonnage of 1,461 GT.

How Much Did the Scout Yacht Cost?

The Scout Yacht cost its owner a tidy sum of about $85 million back in 2019. It’s been reported that the annual running costs for the yacht are somewhere between $5 million and $8 million which is not unusual for a yacht of this size at all.

Is Yacht Charter A Possibility with the Scout Yacht?

At this time the Scout is not available for charter. 

How Fast is the Scout Motor Yacht and What Engines Does it Use?

The Scout has a cruising speed of 12.5 knots and it has a top speed of 15.2 knots although some sources report this a little bit lower at around 14.8 knots. It has a range of 4,800 nautical miles which it can achieve thanks to a pair of Caterpillar diesel (3512C) 1,575hp engines running at 1800 rpm. The yacht has 159,000 liter fuel capacity as well.

What’s the Interior of the Scout Yacht Like?

Because Berwind and Clark use the yacht as a home more so than simply a luxury toy, the interior design of the Scout is very comfortable and inviting. You’ll notice in the photos that, even though it does have that look of luxury, there’s also something a little more like a penthouse apartment than a fancy hotel feel. Things like the plush master suite and the on board garden show that there’s an interest in making this yacht a home more than what you might see on other luxury yachts and especially on charter vessels which have to be a little more impersonal. 

None of that is to suggest the Scout doesn’t have a lot of those great luxury features that make superyachts so enticing. Quite the opposite, in fact. There’s a lot going on with this vessel. It has room on board for 10 guests across five separate cabins.

The Master suite is accessed through a personally curated library of books, antiques and nautical-themed features that have appealed to the owners. It’s roughly the size of a studio apartment in Manhattan and stretches the full beam of the ship. It features two full bathrooms, walk-in closets and frosted, full-length windows at port and starboard. There’s also a private terrace for taking in views of the sea. The terrace also serves as a place for the owner’s dogs to play and get some fresh air on board.

In addition to the master suit, there are two VIP suites for guests as well as 2 double staterooms. 

Berwind and Clark were hands-on during the entire design process of the yacht and ensured that there were some serious pop culture influences at play. Berwind has stated that the design aesthetic was influenced by Fritz Lang’s classic science fiction film Metropolis, the interiors of Jules Verne’s Nautilus submarine, every James Bond villain’s lair, and even Looney Tunes cartoons. You’ll probably never find another yacht with a similar pedigree.

Amenities and Features

• The owner has hand-picked artwork throughout the yacht including many pieces by New York artist William Steiger
• A custom-designed one of a kind greenhouse can be accessed from the puppy park and features a wide array of hanging and potted plants tended by Berwind himself.
• A custom, high-tech security system, details of which are obviously not available, was installed to keep the vessel safe as it travels to all parts of the world and could potentially face some dangerous situations.
• A guest elevator to help navigate between decks
• A helipad at the foredeck allows guests to come and go via helicopter even when the vessel is at sea
• The steel hull over aluminum superstructure is built to be ice class, meaning it’s stronger than a typical yacht and can handle travel in sub-zero temperatures. This also means the propeller and rudder are designed to be more robust and capable of navigating frigid Northern waters as well. 
• There is both an on deck pool and sauna for relaxing located on a massive sundeck
• Like many similar yachts, the Scout features a gym, fully equipped with the latest gear, for working out.
• A cinema room for movie watching
• Both formal and casual dining areas depending on mood and occasion 
• The yacht was designed with an eye towards running greener and more sustainably than some other yachts. To that end the engines have improve fuel efficiency and waste management systems are also highly advanced to cut down on the yacht’s overall footprint
• The upper deck features a large sunbed and then features a large area for parties, dining, or just lounging
• The ceiling of the main saloon is an LCD screen that mirrors the exterior view, making it seem as though you’re outside despite being in
• The Scout has a pair of 26 foot tenders that can be brought on board or lowered into the sea viz the on-board crane system

The Scout also houses a number of nautical toys but a full list of things such as jet skis and seabobs has not been made public to allow us to know the extent of the items on board.

The Bottom Line

The superyacht Scout was built by Hakvoort yachts and is owned by James Berwind. It was launched in 2019. An expedition yacht with a hull designed to handle even the coldest temperatures, Berwind spends a lot of time living on the yacht with his partner and rescue dogs. This includes a dog named Scout, who the yacht was named after.

At just over 209 feet it’s a large yacht, though far from the biggest, and it’s believed to have cost Berwind $85 million. It has a maximum speed of just over 15 knots. Because it’s used not just as a pleasure boat but as a home, it has many features that make it more unique than a typical yacht which includes a lot of custom facilities designed to handle dogs, such as a puppy garden on an observation deck. In addition, there are features such as a garden that grows hanging and potted plants year round.

Walmart billionaire’s €300m superyacht moored off Dún Laoghaire coast

Heiress’s luxury vessel comes complete with a heli pad, swimming pool and 16 cabins.

A superyacht belonging to one of the wealthiest women in the world was sighted on Tuesday moored in Scotsman’s Bay, off Dún Laoghaire, providing a rare treat for the harbour’s yacht spotters.

The 110-metre, €300 million Kaos is reportedly owned by Nancy Walton Laurie, heiress to the Walmart US retail empire.

Weighing in at 4,523 tons, it has impressive features including 16 cabins, a gym, a steam room, an indoor beach club, a cinema, a sauna, and a spa. There is also a swimming pool and a helipad.

The yacht’s interiors are known for their lavish style which includes marble and stone fittings, and custom-made silk carpets.

The yacht was recently seen in London and Cornwall before making its way to Dún Laoghaire.

According to Superyacht Times, Kaos was formerly known as Jubilee, and was launched in 2017, as the largest yacht ever built in the Netherlands.

“The exterior features a combination of curved lines and glass panels in the bulwarks is visually stunning to create an illusion of extra decks and a trompe l’oeil effect where the yacht appears long and lean. Metallic paint enhances reflected sunlight on these curved lines,” the publication said.

It was the second large private yacht to visit the Dublin in recent weeks and follows the more modest €80 million Scout which was moored in the Liffey and visited Kinsale.

Scout, also a Dutch-built vessel, was launched in 2019 for James Berwind, whose family made a fortune out of coal and mining. He now engages in social entrepreneurship and is reported to have a passion for animal welfare.

Berwind and his partner Kevin Clark designed Scout, which is named after the couple’s dog, to be a semi-permanent base from which they can explore the world.

The superyacht visits come at the beginning of what is expected to be a busy season for cruise ships at the historic south Dublin port town.

Mary Hanafin, former Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown council, said more than 90 ships will visit Dún Laoghaire this year. During her tenure as Cathaoirleach, which concluded this week, Ms Hanafin said she visited three ships which were first-time arrivals in Dún Laoghaire. She said the cruise ships which she visited were two small luxury vessels which can accommodate 500 to 600 passengers, and one larger ship which could accommodate some 3,200 passengers and 1,400 crew.

Ms Hanafin said the local authority which controls the harbour receives fees for boats moored offshore while power boat owners also received fees for escorting tenders.

She said while some passengers went on to Dublin or Glendalough, many remained in Dún Laoghaire Town and spent money on gifts. She said the council has set up and tourist information and gift shops as well as a reception area in the harbour.

The sweetest driver and the most amazing relaxing time. We didn't have to worry about anything. Really throughly enjoyed our time. We drove to San Francisco to a wedding, my aunts and uncles are older and it's hard for them to see in long drives outside of our city. This was a treat! It was around 30+ of us. Super friendly customer service, everything was easy and smooth. The bus was clean as a whistle and we were able to play our own music. Bluetooth connected, waters and a TV! We brought our own snacks and a little bit of wine, we had a blast.

We rented a party bus for my husband and I's 30th and it was incredible! Mark was awesome and made sure we all got there and back safely, and we got sooo many compliments from our friends that came. Plenty of space, super clean ride and overall just a great time! Definitely recommend!

I had my senior ball on 5/5 and Mark was amazing! I found him on yelp and had messaged him starting from February because I knew how crazy prom season would be. I copied part of the message he sent me for the quote I asked for: "The following land yacht is available for your 6 hour (5:45p-11:45p) event on the date you've requested.  30-36 passenger - $1,695.00 Our prices INCLUDE ALL FEES AND CHAUFFEUR'S GRATUITY, as well as complimentary ice and bottled water." I had 32 people on my bus and we all had enough space! The water was definitely awesome for the end of the night but Mark was so responsible and got us to SF city hall on time and safely. He was so quick at replying to my messages and I have had looked into many other places and this was the most accommodating and reasonably priced. Highly recommend !!

Our group had an amazing time! Mark arrived on time to pick us up and the bus was clean and spacious. The bathroom on board was an added plus. The pricing is very favorable to other companies and the bus has everything you need. I wish I had taken pictures of the interior because the other photos on here don't do it justice. There's also a TV that you can stream to. We ended up extending our reservation an hour because we didn't want it to end. We will definitely be using Mark again in the future.

First class experience from pickup, journey, to drop off. Our chauffeur Kelvin provided us with a safe and wonderful experience to make for a good time. Will definitely be hiring this company for future corporate events and celebrations. Keep up your good work. Thank you.

I rented a bus for my brothers 30th birthday and it was an unforgettable night! The bus was in great condition and so much bigger than I imagined. It even had a restroom which was helpful because we had it reserved for 5 hours. The driver was fantastic and let us blast our music and dance the whole time. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a good time!!

Mark is pretty darn awesome! We chartered his land yacht for a work event. Everyone had an amazing time, and everyone said that they would definitely want to work with Mark again for both future and personal events that require group transportation. FIVE STARS ALL THE WAY!
