The Stratus 46 is a flexy longboard shape designed specifically for freestyle and longboard dancing. At 45.5″ long by 9.25″ wide, with griptape only where you need it, this board has plenty of space for all of your cross-stepping needs. The Hollowtech Stratus Spectrum is pressed in Kimberley, BC in our proprietary maple/fiberglass Hollowtech construction to keep the board light and strong while giving you a nice, snappy flex. The Landyachtz Stratus deserves a review of its own because it’s likely the most lightweight and flexiest dancer on the market.

The Stratus is designed to be a flatland dancer board and does the job really well, thanks to its very large and super flat shape, incredible flex, large wheel cutouts, and big kicks.

The Stratus comes in three versions: a bamboo version and two special “Hollowtech” versions that have intrigued the dancing community quite a bit. Landyachtz’s Hollowtech construction results in a hollow core deck that makes it astonishingly lightweight, highly bouncy, and beautiful-looking as the deck is actually see-through.

Because of its feather weight , inviting kicks, and snappy response, however, many riders use the Stratus for hardcore jump tricks even though the board is not really designed for heavy abuse, sometimes resulting in premature wear of the deck.

Landyatchz Stratus deck

The Stratus can be defined as a flatland freestyle dancer deck designed to be light and agile. It’s 45″ long and 9.25″ wide with an adjustable wheelbase of 27.5″ to 28.5″.

So while the Stratus is not the biggest dancer out there – e.g. compared to the Loaded Bhangra which is 48″ x 9.5″ with a 32.75″ wheelbase, it offers a nice and large effective foot platform for boardwalking and cross-stepping.

The Stratus is fully symmetrical with big, slightly-concaved 4″ double  kicks for manuals, shuvits, and pivots. It’s quite flat in the middle with very little concave for free dancing movements. It has very slight wheel flares and is slightly scooped down at the base of the kicks providing tiny foot pockets for a bit of lock-in when carving or riding fast.

The center of the deck is completely ungripped to provide a smooth surface to move on, as grip often makes your feet stick and get in the way of cross-stepping and pirouette tricks – for comparison, the Loaded Tarab uses cork material to provide stick-free traction between the trucks.

Landyachtz Stratus versions

As mentioned, the Stratus comes in a bamboo version and two Hollowtech versions.

Stratus Hollowtech

The Hollowtech Stratus is the most original and intriguing one. The deck’s hollow core makes it not only extremely lightweight but also super flexy.

Landyachtz manufacturing process involves taking a wood core and hollowing it out into a honeycomb design, which greatly reduces the deck’s weight. For added strength, pre-cured fiberglass layers are then added on the top and bottom of the deck using epoxy material.

The result is a feather light deck that weighs 3.8 lb (5-6 lb complete with trucks and wheels) which is a lot lighter than most dancer boards out there, e.g. about half the weight of the Bhangra! What’s more, the deck is transparent in the light, resulting in a truly beautiful looking longboard.

There are 2 Hollowtech Stratus versions that differ in terms of flex, the red standard flex version, and the blue super-flex version. See below for more about flex.

Stratus Bamboo

Besides the Hollowtech version, Landyachtz also offers a “standard” bamboo version of the Stratus. This version uses bamboo with a Canadian maple core and epoxy resulting in a springy and durable dancer longboard.

The maple core is obviously not as lightweight as the hollow core, however, the bamboo offers a very nice flex profile when dancing and carving on the board. The maple and bamboo core also makes the board stronger and more durable.

Another advantage of the bamboo version is the much more affordable price at slightly over $200 (vs $300+) for the Hollowtech versions.

Hollowtech Stratus flex

The incredible flex of the Hollowtech Stratus, namely the Super-Flex version, arouses everyone’s curiosity.

The great thing about it is that the deck feels relatively firm when you simply stand on it. However, when you apply pressure it responds in a very lively way, though it does not sag or “ bottombite ” when landing a trick – assuming you’re in the right weight range for your given flex option.

So if you’re simply riding and walking around the board, you don’t feel the flex that much, just a comfortable feel that helps you with edge control and carving. On the other hand, when you jump hard on the board when landing a trick, you find the deck to be highly flexible and springy, which helps absorb the impact and makes the board very lively.

Again, it’s important to choose the right flex option for your weight. If you’re not sure whether to choose the red (standard flex) or blue ( superflex ) Stratus, go for red if you’re over 170 lb – a snappy and solid board. Though you may prefer a flexier deck even as a heavier rider, avoid choosing blue if you’re over 200lb.

Is the Landyachtz Stratus durable?

There’s a long-running debate in the dancing community regarding the durability of the Stratus. While some find it durable, others complain about the deck not holding up so well over time.

Let me first clarify something: the bamboo/maple “standard” version of the Stratus apparently can take a lot abuse and resist quite well when being thrown around in no-comply and other kick tricks. Thus, the debate about durability is mainly about the (pricier) Hollowtech versions.

It’s also worth mentioning that freestyle dancing in general tends to take a heavy toll on the longboard – an avid dancer may often go through his/her board in as little as 3 or 4 months!

Some Stratus regular users sometimes have qualms regarding the deck’s durability, e.g. the deck starts to splinter after 3-4 months of heavy use.

Due to its very light weight , the Stratus feels highly trickable , easy to kick around and perform heavy flip tricks on. As a result, many riders are tempted to do hardcore tricks and throw the board around hard.

In reality though, the Stratus is primarily meant to be a dancer board (as suggested by the term “flatland freesyle “). Such hardcore kick tricks will put the deck through a lot of abuse it’s not really designed to withstand over time.

Pure dancing riders, on the other hand, confirm the Stratus handles impacts quite well for common dancing and carving use, despite weighing significantly less than your average board in this class. Many riders, including heavier ones (240 lb) have had their Stratus for months and are happy with how it’s held up.

For much heavier riders, e.g. 250+ lb, though they may choose the standard flex (red) Stratus version, there are probably better-suited dancing longboard options out there – such as the indestructible Loaded Tarab ( see my review here ).

Landyachtz Stratus setup

The Stratus comes equipped with Bear Grizzly GR852 trucks which are excellent carving trucks for dancing and carving – they are my personal favorite trucks for cruising and carving, I’ve been using them for many months on my Landyachtz Chief pintail .

The wheels that come stock with the Stratus are Fatty Hawgs 63mm with a 78A durometer. The Fatties are great cruising and carving soft wheels with a large 50mm contact patch that give you very good roll for your dancing and solid grip for your carving. The 63mm diameter is a good match for the stratus deck to avoid any wheelbite in hard turns.

The Bear and Hawgs brands are owned by Landyachtz so these are high-quality components. The wheels are fitted with very decent Bear Spaceball bearings. Overall a super decent setup out of the box for a pure dancing, carving, and commuting usage.

Final words

The Landyachtz Stratus has made the buzz in the longboard dancing community with it’s astounding Hollowtech version that makes it one of the most lightweight dancers on the market. Its beautiful see-through design and amazing flex make it stand out from the crowd.

At under $350 list price, it’s a relatively affordable dancer considering the advanced technology and features it offers.

If you bear in mind the Stratus is more of a pure dancing board than a true freestyle longboard, you’ll love the novel experience this amazing deck has to offer.

I bought 4 months ago the Landyachtz Chief pintail longboard, I feel like I have good control on the board, I ride pretty quick and learned how to stop, my issue is that I'm struggling with making tricks (Simple as a pivot) or to make slides.

Should I get Hollowtech Stratus 40 board with 67mm Tracer Hawgs or 70mm Adam Yates Pros wheels(Already have Fatty Hawgs 63mm, I can switch)?

Would it be easier for me to learn tricks and slides with this board? what is your recommendation?

Hi Ofir, yeah pintails are not the best for tricks, although with practice you can do it (the Chief does have a bit of concave) the absence of real kicks and the relatively narrow shape on the Chief definitely makes it harder - except for simple things like in this clip. The Stratus is a true dancing board with a huge standing platform and good kicks, it's made primarily for walking, cross-stepping and classic flatland. You can probably slide on it with good technique but be aware the deck is grip-free between the trucks and has very subtle concave for unhindered walking - again, this is primarily a great dancing deck. The Hollowtech is also very flexy so get the Red version (stiffer) if you want to slide on it. Check out my post on the Stratus if you haven't yet. About the wheels, never tried the Adam Yates but it seems to me the 67mm Tracer would be a little better for tricks and slides being slightly smaller and with a smaller contact patch. The Yates look like they would be very grippy and so make great carving wheels, but slightly harder to break traction on. Both are quite soft though so they'd be better suited for softer dancing style tricks than for hardcore freestyle and tech sliding. Just my 2 cents! hope it helps. Jesse

What about the Stratus 46 Spectrum as the basis for this? 46 inches long, good width etc. Pretty long wheelbase. If it was more rigid, how would that work for someone of your height?

Long and wide tails will bite motors and larger wheels. 46" length is sweet though. We like big batteries.

Some key points for your guys: Esk8 has huge wheels compared to analog. As such, the biggest problem with what I consider your most popular decks in the electric scene(switchblade and Evo) is potential wheel bite(more so on the switchblade)

Vibration is constant and extreme. Reinforcing a deck is good, but what loaded did with the motherboard and TPU reinforcement for vibration dampening sounds awesome.

The main point of breakage is the mounting “tails,” almost every single time I see a deck break, that’s where it breaks. If you’re going to reinforce anything make it those necks.

Routed out bottoms are simple and awesome, more electronics inside, less bulk outside.

I think something with a drop will do more, when you put 110 wheels and add rizers to get clear of wheelbite you find yourself so high from the ground you have not the slightest chance of footbraking ever

That makes sense. I’ve never riden an esk8 so this is useful for me.

As for the break points, I agree. From what I’ve seen online the failures almost always occur there and it’s way above our usual failure rates. Fiberglass should fix that though.

idealy it should keep some flew for dampening though, except if its for super fast builds, maybe you could propose the same deck with different numbers of plys like we do for mountainboards ?

This way off topic, but are any of you familiar with Beercan Boards? They’re all aluminum. They have a shape pretty similar to our Switchblade but it’s 42 inches.

It’d be tricky to mount a cradle to one to hold your controllers and battery etc, but it’d be a decent thing.

Yesssss beercan boards are nice. I’ve only seen one electrified so far. But, I was talking to them a few months ago and they’re also looking into electric-specific models. There whole lineup is pretty e-friendly anyways, if you ask me.

They are. We supply them with trucks at the moment so I only came across them by chance. Never seen one in real life.

The problem, from what I gathered, is that their machines are built specifically to bend the metal into that shape, hence the similar frame on all of them. While that frame is actually pretty ok for mounting an enclosure, it gets in the way of the electronics, useable space suffers hard.

If we’re talking about similarities the Rayne Demonseed is functionally similar to the Switchblade with a few more length options, and slightly better for electrification because of truck clearance and stuff. Could be worth looking into for ideas.

Honestly a Switchblade with the truck mounting holes an inch further out both sides and a corresponding fork reinforcement would probably solve most of the problems. We’d even be able to use our existing enclosures!

First I will add a +1 to the suggestions others mentioned for an esk8 version of the switchblade:

• Truck mounting points need to be extended to help with wheelbite. + The concave of the deck is too close to the current truck mounting holes, so using a flat backing plate on the bottom doesn’t really work / the plate will bend
• Deck needs to be reinforced with fiberglass. If you were to extend the wheelbase on the current version, it flexes way too much (2nd board in this video): Switchblade flexiness - YouTube

And as a bonus feature, a lot of esk8 specific decks actually have the sides of the board thicker (for rigidity) and the middle cut out on the bottom so that there’s more space for batteries and electronics. Here’s a picture of the Hummie deck as an example:

Other crazy esk8 deck ideas

• A Switchblade with angled deck ends for channel trucks / adjustable baseplates. Helps lower the standing platform for boards with really big wheels and trucks.
• A lot of people pay stupid amounts of money for this discontinued Lacroix Prototipo deck (manufactured by Zenith I believe):

(Of course, there are some esk8 decks that do use CF for the strength / flex they want, but just know that it comes with its downsides)

I didn’t know carbon fiber did that! Fiberglass would be the most likely material to use anyway, it’s cheaper and easier to work with and maple/fiberglass layering is already a part of our manufacturing process for some decks such as the ATV-X models.

Also, what would be your thoughts on a foam grip tape to help control vibrations to your feet? If you check the landyachtz website you can see it on our snowskates. It’s kind of like a foam sandpaper.

Customize your Stratus Dancer!

With the help of our product configurator you can create your own Stratus. We have made a suitable selection of trucks and wheels, with which you will always have fun and which is at least as good as the original setup.

The Stratus 46 is a flexy longboard shape designed specifically for freestyle and longboard dancing. At 45.5″ long by 9.25″ wide, with griptape only where you need it, this board has plenty of space for all of your cross-stepping needs. The Stratus Watercolour uses an 8 ply Canadian Maple construction to give a nice medium flex feel that returns lots of energy out of each turn but still gives you a confident feeling when landing tricks. The shape has been modified slightly this year to work with the new Grizzly Gen 6 180mm trucks while still having tons of pop. The Stratus rolls on 63mm Fatty Hawgs to keep the complete light and let you run your trucks nice and loose without worrying about wheelbite.

Loaded tarab 47" - complete longboard.

Light, durable and technical, the Tarab series has been developed to allow each longboarder great freedom of expression in their practice of Dancing and Freestyle.

This new >Loaded will delight all dancers who love freestyle longboarding and boardwalking. The LOADED Tarab II is designed to cover all aspects of Dancing, from relaxed surf-style footwork, to cruising and the most technical Freestyle tricks.

Loaded Tarab II - Deck

On the deck side, we keep the DNA of the first Tarab. A comfortable deck with a choice of Flex, lots of foot space and fairly soft kicktail angles. The symmetrical shape with its slight concave and Rocker, and grab rails (the deck is dug under the fingers to do finger tricks) with a small grain grip in the center for Freestyle tricks.

The board is a concentrate of the best know-how of LOADED Longboards, with their Bamboo/Basalt construction for a very light result (2.2 kg) and particularly durable. The cork finish (present on the top of the deck on the Tarab), added to limit vibrations and increase weather resistance, has been redesigned and moved under the deck.

The top of the deck of this Tarab II has a layer of bamboo, covered with varnish, and offers a very smooth surface. The resin used for the sandwich comes from recycled organic materials, responding to LOADED's desire to control its carbon footprint.

The nose and tail are still reinforced with a layer of Basalt, once again increasing the strength and pop of this longboard.

The deck has several holes to modify the wheelbase to adapt to the style, depending on whether you are more Dancing, Freestyle or Versatile.

The LOADED Tarab II is available in 2 FLEX versions:

• Flex 1 : 140-270+ lbs / 63-123+ kg
• Flex 2 : 80-190+ lbs / 36-86+ kg

Loaded Tarab II - Other Details

The most common setup includes Orangatang Fat Free wheels to provide enough freedom for tricks.

Pro Longboarder Lotfi Lamaali was particularly involved in the design of this board. The design of this new LOADED Tarab 2 was made in collaboration with the artist Will Scobie, and represents "fluidity", a concept greatly linked to the Dancing longboard, all influenced by Lotfi's Moroccan origins.

Loaded Tarab II - Set Up

All assemblies are made to measure and may vary depending on the availability of certain versions of wheels or trucks. Unless otherwise specified by us, the LOADED Tarab II longboard is mounted with Paris V3 -180mm - 50° trucks, Orangatang Fat Free 86a wheels, and LOADED Jehu bearings.

Stratus 46 - Bayside

The Stratus is one of the most functional and versatile boards in our lineup. Designed for dancing, the long wheelbase and subtle flex create a board well suited to freestyle tricks, long cruises, carving, sliding, bombing, popping those ollies and all out vibing. The board is fully symmetrical, so no matter which way it hits the ground, you can continue getting’ jiggy. it is a fantastic tool for experts to push their boundaries and hone their skills. 

To give back to the environment we have decided that for every skateboard we sell, we plant a tree. One tree produces at least 60 boards. So with our program, one tree will turn into at least 60 new trees planted.

Canadian Maple is a strong and proven material used in the world’s best skateboards. We source only the finest veneers found in Eastern Canada.

CNC WHEEL WELLS

Wheel wells reduce the risk of wheel-bite by increasing the gap between wheels and deck. Sanded or CNC’d wheel wells both allow for larger wheels or looser trucks, if desired.

Take your skating into the third dimension with a kicktail. We design our kicktails to work perfectly with each deck shape as well as with the truck and wheel setup on each complete.

Mellow concave that barely feels like it’s there, but designed to give you the control you need, when you need it.

MULTI WHEELBASE

Precisely dial in your ride with multiple mounting options for your trucks.

SYMMETRICAL

Go both ways with symmetrical board design. Generally found in freeride and downhill decks, these boards allow the rider to skate both regular and switch without changing up their stance.

The Stratus 46 has always been a vibe, but this new version levels up the vibes to 90 (or 90’s to be exact). The same exact board that we all know and love with a new graphic that our passionate in-house artists created, the Stratus 46 Bayside keeps you rolling in style. The Stratus 46 is set up with 180mm, 50-degree Gen 6 reverse kingpin trucks and 63mm, 78a Fatty Hawgs wheels. 45.5" long by 9.25" wide, the 50-degree trucks carve like a dream.

Flex Rating

Flex has a big impact on the overall feel of your board and is influenced by a bunch of different factors. The main ones being thickness of the deck, it's wheelbase and rider weight. To put the equation in laymans terms: more flex occurs when you decrease thickness of the deck, increase the wheelbase and increase rider weight. The more flex in your board the more carvy and agile it'll feel, less flex means it's more stable and suited for faster skating. We test every complete with a device we built in house, specifically to standardize flex ratings.
