Known as the sailing vacation capital of the world  –for good reason—the British Virgin Islands (BVI) are a picturesque group of islands in the Caribbean that check off all the elements of what makes a perfect Caribbean sailing vacation – ideal tropical weather, consistent winds, stunning islands, line of sight navigation, abundant nature, and as much relaxation or beach party adventure spots as you desire.

A BVI yacht charter is probably the best first-timer charter destination in the world. The sailing is easy and the wind is consistent. The second would be the Ionians in Greece. But those that love it (everyone does) keep coming back over and over.

BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS YACHT CHARTER SUMMARY

We’ve been there.

In fact, we’ve done a BVI yacht charter again and again (and again), there is a good reason – easy sailing – warm water – no big hazards to worry about – a great first-time location.

Go snorkeling at the Indians, explore at The Baths, dine at Cooper Island Beach Club, get your money wet swimming to the Soggy dollar, listen to reggae at Foxy’s, jump up and down at the Jumbie party in north bay Virgin Gorda, have a drink or ten at The Willie Tee’s, and so so much more. You can’t do it all in a week but if you keep coming back, maybe you can experience most of it.

When to go?

The BVI is generally a year-round destination.

• Best times to visit are between November and May.
• June is starting to get a wee bit warm for sleeping at night (76 deg F)
• July/August can be quite hot for sleeping at night (78 deg F). We recommend an air-conditioned boat. This means it will need a generator.
• September/October many bases close during these months due to hurricane season but prices are lower and there are fewer crowds.

The BVI has a tropical climate with delightfully warm and easily swimmable water temperatures all year around. Air temperature rarely gets above 90 °F  (30°C) and rarely below 75 °F (24°C). The wettest months are August through November although mostly from thunderstorms rolling quickly through and so the sunshine hours remain high.

The months of July and August can be a bit balmy and so an air conditioning unit on your boat is recommended. Hurricane season is September and October but it is rare for the BVI. In the last 20 years, only 4 have hit. These days with weather technology, you have at least 5 days notice to vacate the area or not travel there. Charter companies usually give you credit for any time lost due to a hurricane.

High tourist season for the BVI is Christmas and New Year. Book at least 9 months in advance if you are looking for this time and expect prices to be high. January, February, and March have delightful weather and are also considered high season.

Cuisine and Provisionng

Cooper Island Beach Club is possibly one of the best dining experiences in the Caribbean – it’s on Cooper Island (duh). There are some other fun and delicious restaurants around and it is doubtful you’ll have a poor experience anywhere in the BVI. Consequently, you’ll find that you’ll be eating out many evenings.

Provisioning: You can do pre-order online, here and here , provisioning that is delivered to your boat. We highly recommend doing this to take care of sundry items. This saves a lot of time and lugging around. Usually we top off with a quick visit to select out own veggies and fruits etc.

There are also other places on your itinerary to top up if you’re getting low. In particular Cane Garden bay has a decent grocery store on the back street as well as Spanish Town on Virgin Gorda.

Must See & Do

• The Baths; the icon of the BVI! Spend hours exploring the giant boulders and swimming in the adjacent sandy beach.
• The Indians: Snorkeling galore.
• White Bay on Jost Van Dyke Island: The Soggy Dollar Beach Bar: Aptly named by those who choose to swim ashore with a fist full of $ for their famous original Painkiller drink and renown as a top beach bar on the earth – for good reason.
• Leverick Bay Resort & Jumbies Beach Bar. Don’t miss the Jumbie dance party
• Foxy’s: One of the most iconic bar/restaurants in all of the Caribbean.
• Savannah Bay: A gorgeous long white sandy beach to play and play with incredible snorkeling on the north end. Don’t go here with a westerly swell.
• Willie Tee’s: A permanently anchored ship with a fun bar in the Bight of Norman Island. Probably best for adults only at night time as the party gets a bit wild.
• Anegada Island: Known for the lobster – and more lobster.

How to get there?

Fly into either:

• Beef Island (EIS) which connects via road to the main island of Tortola and 20 mins drive from Road Town the capital of the BVI.
• Fly to St. Thomas (STT) and take a 40-minute gorgeous ferry ride to Road Town. The ferry is about 8 minutes drive from the STT airport. The free terminal is in Road Town but also sometime it will go to West End (Sopers Hole) first.

The  STT airport can be a mess when trying to leave to go back home so arrive at least 2.5 hours prior to flight.

The Yacht Charters companies are all over Tortola but any taxi will easily take you from the airport or ferry terminal.

*Atmospheric conditions: from the deck of a sailboat, your “visible horizon” is about 12nm on a clear day (considering typical freeboard + your height). Visibility is decreased by haze, fog, rain, smoke, and similar atmospheric considerations. Navigating by line of sight is obviously greater if your destination has features such as mountains, lighthouses, tall buildings, etc…

*Navigational hazards may include features such as rocks, shoals, rough inlets or anchorages, challenging tides and currents, lee shores, commercial traffic, etc…

*Weather: examples of challenging or difficult weather include thunder/lightning storms, areas prone to high winds, or even seasonal risks such as excessive heat.

We had the BEST vacation on "Sol Liv". Captain James and Chef Robyn were easy and fun to be around, and provided wonderful - and seemingly effortless- hospitality. The boat was beautiful, spotless, and spacious and somehow never seemed crowded--plenty of room to spread out and catch a nap when sailing. In addition to sailing the boat, Captain James was a master-bartender; he created a different "captain's cocktail" (aka "sundowners") each day, even providing the kids with beautiful nonalcoholic versions. And Robyn--she is truly a master chef. The creations that she made were not just visually stunning, but delicious as well. The four kids on the boat had a blast; in addition to swimming and snorkeling, they had jousting competitions on the paddleboards, and even tried to catch one of the tarpons that orbited the boat at night (no luck). I am so grateful to have been on this trip.

The boat was clean and in pristine condition. The layout was so well thought out. We had 12 people in our party and never felt crowded on Sol Liv. Tony and Claudia took great care of us and made sure we all had fun. We have experienced other charter companies before and it is not the same as Voyage. We will definitely travel with Voyage again in the future!

My family and I just got back from a sailing trip in the BVIs with Voyage Charters and, although I had never been sailing and had no idea what to expect going in, it exceeded all expectations I could have ever had. Our boat was named Sol Liv and it was BEAUTIFUL and so fancy! There were 6 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms, not including crew quarters. Even though we had a family of 11 onboard, we never felt crowded and like we were constantly on top of each other. We also had our own Chef (Danielle, Denzie as Ryan calls her) and Captain (Ryan) who were both incredible. They knew the islands very well and always had a super fun day planned for us. My mom went into the trip with a few places she wanted to see/visit, which were accommodated, but some of the stops were places Ryan and Danielle recommended which we really appreciated since they are locals to the area! Danielle, was outstanding and made the most delicious meals with recipes I had never had before. Every meal we had was delicious and I am still in awe that she was able to cook that efficiently for 11 people. She would even go into town to acquire local foods so that everything was nice and fresh. I hope she makes a cookbook because I need those recipes! The Captain, Ryan, was also wonderful and went above and beyond to take us to the best spots in the BVIs. He was always ready with the dinghy to take us to shore whenever we wanted. He also went out of his way to take us on 2 separate hikes to places he thought we would like and had pretty views (first along the ridge on Norman Island, then at Cane Garden Bay). My brother and mom also lost their sunglasses in the water and Ryan went down and retrieved them for them. Danielle and Ryan were such a hospitable crew and felt like part of the family the whole trip (they even joined us for family game night 😊 ). I highly recommend Voyage Charters, especially if you have Ryan and Danielle onboard. We will definitely be back and will request this dynamic duo!!

There was plenty for all of us to do - my kids are 14, 12 and 8, and it was the perfect mix of a relaxing and active vacation. Captain Tony knew of our interests from the Preference Packet ahead of time and set a course of travel through the BVIs based on our interests. Once he got to know us even better during the trip, at various times he asked us our preference of activities and was flexible to amend the schedule to accommodate our interests. His sailing expertise made us ALL feel very comfortable and relaxed! (We had never lived on a boat before!) Chef Claudia made delicious meals for us every day! She too had carefully read our Preference Sheets and knew what types of food my family likes best. The variety and depth of the food was amazing, and the timing of when we eat was always perfect! Together, they created a vacation that included lots of snorkeling, swimming, sunning, paddle-boarding, kayaking, and hiking (when we stopped on land). They know the BVIs so well so therefore knew all the best places - both known and less known!, and shared those with us. Not only was it a vacation we will never forget, but I am confident we will be lifelong friends with Tony and Claudia! Thank you Voyage Charters for the trip of a lifetime!

About Our Location

One of the finest and most modern marinas with the best facilities in the BVI, Nanny Cay Resort & Marina has emerged as the premier location for bareboating in the British Virgin Islands and the Caribbean in general. Facilities include a full boatyard, luxury showers and restrooms, a hotel, bars and restaurants, convenience and marine stores, a swimming pool, laundry, and postal service.

Our base in the British Virgin Islands is open from mid-October through early August. The high season runs from mid-December through mid-April. Humidity in the British Virgin Islands is typically low, due to year-round trade winds.

Local Considerations

Guests who sail in BVI will pay a cruising tax of $4 per person and per day . The cruising tax must be paid before departure and to expedite the cruising permits before check-in, we collect it together with your final charter balance. Should you wish to make adjustments, please contact your charter specialist.

The currency in the BVI is the US Dollar .

Check-in Days

In the BVI, the minimum charter duration is 3 days, and there are no set check-in or checkout days.

Carefree Pack

Navigare Carefree includes damage waiver insurance with full coverage, welcome package, final cleaning, bed sheets & towels, dinghy, outboard engine & fuel, propane gas, full water tanks, and snorkeling equipment.

Yacht f uel is not included – the fuel tank will be full when your charter starts and you are responsible for topping off the fuel tank at the end of your charter. The price of the Carefree Pack varies by boat size and is a flat fee for bookings up to one week. A surcharge applies for bookings of 2+ weeks.

CKIM Group was fantastic, for the whole year leading up to the trip! We had nut allergies and 5 kids on the trip, with one family who wasn’t sure they would be able to make it till the week before, and they handled all of our questions and scenarios so quickly, professionally, thoroughly, and kindly. They had a great rapport with the boat owner and crew.

Chris our experience was absolutely amazing!! It was everything that we could hope for and more!!! The Wildcat Too was super clean, super well kept and the perfect size for us!! We loved that Wildcat Too had three levels for us to use contrary to most of the other charters that we saw in the area that did not have the top floor to hang in. The third floor is a must!!

Besides that what made it so special were Rob and Deb. They were amazing!!! They bought everything we had on our list (and believe me it was a lot!!!) and they went out of their way to make it extra special!! Rob knew every perfect place to take us and Deb catered to us with every specific detail you can imagine!! She cooked gourmet food every day and night and spent the whole charter taking care of every detail possible!! They make a great team!! In fact, we talked to them about doing a week charter with them next summer but in a new area like St Marteen, Anguilla, St Barts. They made our trip so special that we only want to travel with them next time!!! Please let me know if there is any website where we can rate our beautiful experience as we want everybody to know how amazing are Rob and Deb and the Wildcat Too!!! Thank you!!

The first pavilion of Crocus Expo IEC hosted an extraordinary exposition of the 5th International exhibition of yachts and boats Moscow Boat Show. The show had been incredibly famous for five years already not only thanks to the specialists of the market segment as well as professional sportsmen but also thanks to those who consider sailing sport to be their hobby and well cherished dream.

Moscow Boat Show 2012

The organizer of the project was the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre. The show was supported by Aston Martin Moscow, Burevestnik Group logistics department and the Yachting specialized magazine.

The exposition space increased up to 30 000 sq m and was accommodated in all 4 exhibition halls of the fairgrounds! 280 Russian (Arkhangelsk, Vyborg, Kazan, Kaluga, Republic of Karelia, Moscow and Moscow region, Nizhny Novgorod, Novorossiysk, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, St. Petersburg, Sverdlovsk region, Sochi, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and Yaroslavl region) and foreign ( Denmark , Germany , Holland , Greece , Spain , Italy , Cyprus , China , Latvia , Poland , USA , Turkey , Ukraine, Finland , France , Montenegro and Croatia ) companies participate in the show.

Moscow Boat Show provided the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continued to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!

Unique exhibits were presented at the show for the first time: exposition of private submarines from U-Boat Russia company, Marquis Yachts 420 SB motor yacht from Sport Bridge S. Marine series, SAGA-415 yacht from Saga Boats Norwegian shipyard, Jetlev-Flyer from MS Watersports.

Moscow Boat Show a Great Success

More than 400 yachts were displayed within the frames of the event including the largest boats ever exhibited in Russia – the 19-meter giant motor yacht Princess 54 as well as the Princess 50 yacht from Nord Marine and Baja speed boat from Burevestnik.

Domfinland OY unveiled a luxury project from Finnish real estate: a seaside premium class hotel in Hanko named consonant with the location Merihanko.

The trade fair was traditionally opened by a Gala Opening Ceremony. Arcady Zlotnikov, First Deputy Director Crocus Expo IEC, was the first to take the floor at the official opening ceremony. He greeted warmly exhibitors, guests and visitors of Moscow Boat Show. Nikolay Krjuchek, Deputy Chief of the State Inspection on Small size Vessels (GIMS) of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of Russia, Georguiy Shaiduko, Acting President of the Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS), Olympic champion in Atlanta and Ekaterina Grishechkina, Director of exhibition Moscow Boat Show also spoke at the ceremony.

The high-ranking guests noted dynamic development of the branch which well reasoned the intensive growth of the exposition and appearance of rather unique “gems”.

A number of business meetings and negotiations were held within the frames of the project: the exhibition was visited by a large delegation of Greek businessmen for the purpose of establishment of mutually beneficial cooperation with the Russian colleagues.

More than 400 yachts on display at the Show

Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS) celebrated its 100 anniversary within the frames of Moscow Boat Show and arranged an exposition of future sailing sport museum (rare awards, gifts, articles from private collections, pictures and etc.) which had been collected since 1912.

Due to carefully chosen running dates the show was visited by more than 26 000 people. The majority of the visitors were of targeted audience – vessel owners and specialists of the branch.

The work at the next edition of the show is under way! The show will be held in March 2013. The overall exhibit space will comprise 40 000 sq m. The exhibition will impress with exclusive exhibits and the latest technological achievements.

Moscow Boat Show was not only an entertaining but at the same time a business promotional event. Participation in the trade fair was a unique opportunity to present a company and products to a distinctly selected targeted audience of industry specialists. They were well prepared to discuss business in the Russian market and even to close a deal on-site.

The show helped representatives of yachting business to get acquainted with their Russian colleagues and gradually improved national yachting market to a new level. It is obvious that for 5 years of its running the project has turned to a status event of the international exhibitions calendar.
