Absolute Yachts 48 Coupe Review

Absolute Yachts 48 Coupe

Absolute Yachts has spent the past several years focused on its Flybridge and Navetta ranges, but the Italian company started out building sports cruisers. With its 48 Coupe, Absolute comes full circle. This yacht is based on the builder’s 47 Fly platform, and it offers something a little different.

Instead of a conventional transom of opaque composites and perhaps a built-in sofa or sun pad, the 48 Coupe’s aft deck comes bare. There is tinted glass, stainless-steel railing aft for safety, and just one transom gate to starboard. All 102 square feet of “cockpit terrace” is essentially open to owner interpretation, and Absolute offers a range of modular deck furniture for the purpose. (Teak decking is one of the bigger options.)

Like the rest of this Absolute range, this latest model is more stocky than sporty—and that’s a good thing. Long, low and pointy is OK for speed, but not always for comfort. Absolute’s team believes that today’s tastes have moved on to comfortable cruising and quality time aboard.

Note that there’s no sunroof option with this model, principally because Absolute has started to embrace solar technology. The coach roof can carry up to 2.5 kilowatts’ worth of solar cells, part of which are inset into a thermally reflective glass panel that delivers light, but not heat, to the salon below. Half that kilowatt capacity comes standard. The other half is optional. With the full solar set, there should be enough power on a sunny day to run all the usual daytime utilities, save for the air-conditioning system, which needs either the main engines or generator. Then again, there is plenty of fresh air when all the doors are open and the picture windows on each side are lowered halfway down.

Absolute Yachts 48 Coupe

Absolute is keeping this model as simple as possible from a production standpoint. The contemporary interior layout and most of the decor are fixed. There’s a choice of aft-deck doors; the 48 Coupe I got aboard had the optional triple-section set that opens extra-wide. The main salon is laid out with an aft galley on the same level as the aft deck. Up a step are a lounge and booth-dining area amidships. The single helm seat and bridge are forward. The salon’s sole is a stained oak that’s optional in the staterooms. There’s 7 feet of headroom in the galley and at least 6 feet, 3 inches up by the prime seats.

Accommodations on the lower deck are three staterooms. There is a forepeak master, a location that makes for quiet should owners want to moor stern-to at the marina. The amount of space beneath the foredeck is pretty good because the bow sections are fairly full. The berth is set on a diagonal. There’s a closet to port, and the en suite shower is to starboard. Absolute makes use of sliding, or “pocket,” doors to conserve space.

The yacht’s two other staterooms are amidships. The one to port is a forward-facing, double-berth affair with a vanity desk or a washer/dryer cupboard, as well as a closet inboard that runs across the rest of the beam to starboard. A twin-berth stateroom is forward of that closet to starboard. Both guest staterooms share the portside shower, which doubles as a day head.

Absolute Yachts 48 Coupe

All of Absolute’s models have Volvo Penta IPS diesels. The 48 Coupe comes with twin 480 hp D6 diesels and IPS650 pod drives. Expect about a 28-knot top-end speed at 3,800 rpm, depending on load. This model will be most efficient skipping along at around 25 knots and 3,500 rpm, at which the fuel burn is around 1.6 gallons per mile. Given the fuel capacity of 423 gallons, that’s 10 hours’ worth of cruising time. At 20 knots, the motors will burn around 34 gallons per hour, providing a theoretical range of around 224 nautical miles with a 10 percent reserve. At 10 knots, the range would push out by another 40 nm or so, and at 8 knots, owners could conceivably run for around 500 nm.

Ergonomics at the helm are good whether the skipper is seated or perched on the bolster. Unusual for a boat this size, there’s full standing headroom at the wheel, as well as a side-deck door. Thanks to all that glass—and the absence of a tall fridge/freezer in the galley—the views from the wheel are virtually 360 degrees.

I ran Hull No. 1 off Varazze, Italy, which lies 20 miles west of Genoa. It’s a confidence-inspiring, stable yacht to pilot. To turn more sharply, disengage the coordinated turn function in Volvo Penta’s Active Ride Control system. Doing so will automatically limit any leaning through turns.

Absolute’s return to its roots seems to be successful. The 48 Coupe offers the comfort and luxury of the Flybridge and Navetta lines, but with a look and feel that sports-cruiser enthusiasts can embrace.

Docking Help

The first 48 Coupe has Volvo Penta’s Assisted Docking system. The IPS joystick not only vectors thrusts from the pods and a Sleipner proportional bow thruster, but it also references those with dynamic-positioning capability. The boat can go just about anywhere, including perfectly sideways. When I took my hand off the joystick, the boat held the same position and attitude—a great comfort to even the most experienced captains.

Safe and Secure

Raymarine’s DockSense technology helps prevent collisions by overriding steering and throttle commands. The system has three camera boxes, one on each side and one aft-facing. Their views appear together on one of the helm’s monitors, with a schematic radar view that references the gaps between the boat and any surface objects. Green, amber and red colors combined with audible beeps warn the skipper as the gaps narrow.

The bravest design yet from the Italian yard, the Absolute Navetta 73 has paid dividends in terms of space, light and fuel efficiency

From down on the pontoon, it seems huge, inelegant and angular. Moored stern to the quay, it appears roomy and inviting. Seen out on the water, it looks purposeful and businesslike. There is no angle from which the new Absolute Navetta 73 can be described as pretty, but I doubt the yard’s design department is losing much sleep over that.

Absolute has always enjoyed ploughing its own individual furrow and in the 15 years of its existence, it has created a unique persona for itself as a company whose boats are often unusual and sometimes brilliant, but never boring.

The Absolute Navetta 73 is not an especially beamy boat for its length, but with its massive square stern, it looks like it is. That impression is heightened by a huge full-beam flybridge, which completely shades the cockpit and, for most of their length, the side decks too.

The wide side decks and cockpit are exceptionally safe and sheltered

It was unveiled at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2017 and sat among the gleaming, sleek and delicate-looking boats like a bouncer surrounded by bridesmaids. Any larger-than-life exterior is, naturally, built around an equally voluminous interior.

The Absolute Navetta 73’s hull carries its beam well forward, at both gunwale and waterline, and with the engineroom bulkhead situated some way aft of midships, there is plenty of room for accommodation.

The layout is unusual. The master cabin sits forward on its own level, down six steps from the main deck but significantly higher than the lower deck – a decision forced on the designers by the limited space available down in that narrow bow.

So it has flat floors, a spacious head and shower compartment behind glass double doors in the bows, and gigantic rectangular windows. A properly usable walk-in wardrobe and plenty of ancillary lockers and drawers provide plenty of stowage for clothes, albeit with a lack of full-length hanging space.

The bed is enormous and in common with all the guest cabins, headroom is a generous 6ft 6in (1.98m). It seemed perverse not to fit under-berth drawers as well – why ever not? – but the reason for that became plain soon enough.

Absolute Navetta 68: Italian trawler range to grow again with Cannes debut

Down on the lower deck, which is reached via the companionway on the starboard side of the saloon, the midships VIP cabin can’t quite compete with the owner’s, but it nevertheless shares a luxurious sense of space.

Placing the sink under the port-side window and putting the shower and heads in separate compartments either side of it, clearly places a higher premium on light and space below decks than on keeping the plumbing hidden from view, which evinces a proper sense of priorities.

Space to spare

At first, the port VIP cabin hardly seems to merit such a title, but slide open that forward door and it turns out to have a vast dressing room, down two steps. Although it’s tucked into the void space beneath the master cabin’s double berth (aha!), it still has more than 6ft (1.85m) of headroom.

This area obviously doesn’t show up on the layout diagram but I can assure you it’s real, and with shelving, lockers and hanging space, it has much to recommend it.

absolute-Navetta-73-yacht-test-review-double-guest-cabin

The port VIP cabin has its own dressing room

The fourth cabin is a twin berth on the starboard side with just a hanging locker in which to stow your stuff, but the beds are a full 6ft 6in (1.98m) long. If you asked nicely, the shipyard might fit a door to provide it with ensuite access to the day head at the bottom of the companionway.

That vertical windscreen isn’t just purposeful-looking and easy to see through – it also allows the wheelhouse to be set pretty far forward, without encroaching on the foredeck. This, of course, leaves plenty of space on the rest of the main deck, while big side windows ensure the saloon feels as spacious as it looks, even while sacrificing width to the Absolute Navetta 73’s excellent side decks. These are 18in (46cm) wide and secure behind a guardrail height of 32in (81cm).

Set between saloon and wheelhouse, the galley has its own access to the side deck and wheelhouse, while the sliding door to starboard means that crew and guest areas can be separated if necessary.

absolute-Navetta-73-yacht-test-review-galley

The main deck galley has access from the side decks as well as the saloon so that when professional crew are employed, they can come and go without disturbing guests

It is rather long and thin, but well endowed with refrigeration, freezer and stowage space. Drawers and lockers for crockery and glassware can be found in the lobby outside. The wheelhouse has its own flybridge companionway for rapid access to the upper helm, and is also reasonably well placed to use the galley’s door out to the side deck.

If you do cruise with crew, you shouldn’t have too many complaints about the cabin in the stern. On our test boat, it was equipped with a single berth – more can be fitted on request – a separate head and shower compartment, a convertible dinette, a washer-dryer, some useful lockers and extra fridge and freezer space. Headroom comes in at 6ft 7in (2.01m).

Various choices of interior finish are available. The boat exhibited at Cannes had Minotti furniture inside and Paola Lenti chairs up on the flybridge , with dark gloss walnut and elm veneers used throughout the interior, floors of oak, fabric-clad bulkheads and leather and lacquer trim.

The main deck saloon and free-standing dining table wouldn’t look out of place on a 90ft superyacht

Fitted as standard, the Absolute Navetta 73’s magnetic surfaces are a fun party piece: both the dining table and the flybridge table are constructed with a thin steel sheet beneath the veneer so that the yacht’s compatible wine glasses – each with a small magnet set into the base – don’t fall over and smash.

Like all of its Absolute stablemates since 2008, the Navetta is designed solely around Volvo’s IPS system. It might seem a surprisingly big and weighty craft for pod drives and indeed, its only engine option is the largest available, the 1,000hp IPS1350, which compares with the 1,400hp or 1,550hp units that you might expect to find on more conventional shaftdrive yachts of this size.

Performance

With its plumb bow and very fine entry, the Absolute Navetta 73’s hull shape has a faintly Edwardian look about it, although the naval architects of 100 years ago would never have tried to match the Navetta’s ample bulk with any ideas of high performance – which, by the standards of those times, the Navetta possesses in abundance.

absolute-Navetta-73-yacht-test-review-engine-room

With easy access, flat-mounted engines, 6ft 2in (1.88m) of headroom over the treadplate walkways and plenty of space to get at everything except the IPS drives which are rather buried down the back, the engineroom is a terrific space

As an understanding of planing hull characteristics began to mature in design circles during the 1930s and ’40s, it was realised that simply marrying a knife-like bow with load- bearing midships and aft sections was not the ideal compromise.

If the deadrise angle changed too abruptly, the resultant impact zone could pound both the boat and its crew to pieces, as many a young seaman in the torpedo boats of the time could testify.

Of course, the Absolute Navetta 73 is not designed to achieve the 40 knots or more of the plywood navy, but to ensure a soft ride in a head sea, its deadrise still decreases at a fairly restrained rate, as seen in the line of the chine, which starts high and proud on the stem and meets the waterline around a third of the way back to the transom as the bottom flattens out, quite gradually, to a shallow 7.4° right aft.

Another potential side effect of a superfine entry is the deluge of spray, which it throws up at speed, and to counter this, the Absolute Navetta 73 has a broad flat at the chine that continues right around the stem, helping keep the sea where it belongs.

absolute-Navetta-73-yacht-test-review-bow-view

Chine flats deflect spray away from the slender stem and increase space in the master suite

As so often seems to be the case whenever there is an intriguing and unusual hull to test, conditions on the day were about as challenging as the Round Pond in Kensington Gardens. A light breeze could lift no more than a modest chop on the waters of the Baie de Cannes. It would have been fun in a RIB, but the Absolute Navetta 73 simply didn’t notice.

Acceleration was steady and linear with no discernible ‘hump’ as the broad, flat lifting surfaces did their thing. The boat simply climbed out of the hole and kept going, longitudinal trim increasing gradually once hull speed was exceeded and reaching 5° at our maximum of 25.6 knots.

Acceleration had a surprising urge to it. A low planing speed can be useful in a cruising yacht, as it allows you to make progress even if conditions have forced you to ease back on the throttles. The Absolute Navetta 73’s flat aft sections kept it securely on the plane at just 14 knots – although the massive wake spreading out astern was a quick antidote to any delusions of hydrodynamic efficiency.

Of course, our wake came in useful for trying out that fine entry, which sliced through it like butter with little vertical acceleration and no discernible check on our progress. It felt quite impressive. We kept the Seakeeper gyro stabiliser switched off and the trim tabs fully up, and the Absolute Navetta 73 handled quite conventionally, turning with a slight inward heel and proving more nimble and enjoyable to drive than it looks.

absolute-Navetta-73-yacht-test-review-layout

At first glance, it’s clear the Absolute Navetta 73 is offering something out of the ordinary. You don’t build a boat with such attention-grabbing looks if you want it to blend in. And the shipyard is right to demand your attention, because this is an innovative craft which is worth seeking out for lots of reasons, especially the way in which the forward accommodation spaces are handled. The master cabin being on its own deck level creates lots of usable space below without the need for a separate, raised wheelhouse. Necessity is the mother of invention: the bow’s shape forced the designers to raise the level of the forward suite, and their solution works brilliantly. The Navetta also has an effective hull design, which is notable not just for the way its razor-sharp bow slices through a chop, but because its acreage of flat lifting surfaces helps make it more fuel efficient than most of its counterparts. The low drag IPS pods also play a part. Packing less power, the Absolute Navetta 73 might not have the top speed of a Princess 75 but from tickover to 25 knots or so, it is burning much less fuel. That just leaves its looks. But beauty isn’t always an absolute. As Ayckbourn put it in The Norman Conquests, “Anybody I love is automatically beautiful.”

All-New Absolute 52 FLY Review (2022 Edition)

The Absolute 52 Fly arrives with a fresh look and a stunning three-cabin interior. Have we got a new leader of the pack on our hands?

All-New Absolute 52 FLY Review (2022 Edition) image 1

The 2022/2023 generation of Absolute flybridge boats are some of the best the Italian shipyard has ever designed. The 52 Fly may be sub-55ft but it feels huge on board and boasts an interior layout so effective it makes you wonder why other boats in this sector aren't using the same blueprint.

As with every other modern Absolute, it's only available with Volvo Penta IPS but this is what grants the designers so much accommodation space to play with on the lower deck and it should be good for a reliable 22-knot top speed and a cruising range of 250nm. We'll put those claims to the test on our upcoming sea trial. We caught up with the boat at the 2023 Miami Boat Show, where it had its global debut, to see how it stacks up.

Our Scores Explained

Design & Build

This generation of Absolute flybridge has a distinctive look with oversized hull windows and fin-style open haunches that aim to maintain the connection between the cockpit and the water. The boats are not classically handsome but the look is more refined than it was a few years ago and there's no doubt that they have a distinctive look that is all their own.

On board, the use of space is truly outstanding and the volume of the interior is astonishing. By arranging the owner's cabin on a mid-deck forward, you get both a wonderful space for the owner and guests are treated to a fabulous full-beam VIP amidships.

Modular deck furniture is another feature of this generation of Absolute, adding great flexibility to the cockpit and flybridge. As standard, the decks are empty to fill with any furniture the owner desires but to make life easy Absolute provides some on request and it's as stylish as it is flexible.

Absolute 52 Fly at anchor

Absolute builds all of its boats using its Integrated Structural System (ISS). The interiors are cut and assembled separately to the hulls and dropped in once constructed, pre-prepared with wiring and plumbing. It's an efficient build method, which, according to Absolute, improves the accuracy of the build and maintains a more consistent level of quality. You can't be definitive about quality from the safety of a boat show berth but there is certainly a feeling of real cohesion aboard the 52 Fly and reassuring solidity in everything from the flooring to the way the internal doors clunk shut. It feels like a quality machine.

Absolute pays attention to the little things that make life on board easier. It's small things like having a dedicated slot for the boat hook adjacent to the flybridge steps in the cockpit and the smart stainless steel hoop that slots into the bathing platform to give swimmers something to grab onto when they emerge from the sea.

This will be an owner-run boat for the majority so ease of maintenance is key and to that end the machinery space is impressive. With both the generator and optional Seakeeper stabilizer space is a little tight at the entrance to the engine room but access to the engines and IPS pods is excellent and the quality and tidiness of installation are top-notch. The 52 Fly should be an easy boat to live with and look after.

Absolute's range is an IPS-only zone so if you don't like the idea of pod drives the 52 isn't for you. That said, the integration of Volvo's pods is faultless and it's part of the reason why the designers have so much space to play with on the lower deck.

Interior Accommodation

The interior is the 52 Fly's trump card, it's hard to compute quite how Absolute has managed to include three cabins and two bathrooms and endow them with so much space. There isn't a boat in the sector that uses the footprint as cleverly as this.

The main deck salon is familiar Absolute with its aft galley, two-part sliding cockpit door, and a window section that drops into the counter to create a small bar area.  The galley is split with the counter, sink, hob, cooker, and a good amount of storage space to port and a full-height fridge/freezer and pantry to starboard. The detail is excellent. The soft rounding of corners, the subtle integration of a handhold into the edge of the galley counter, and the chest forward of the fridge/freezer that contains fiddled storage for all of the Absolute branded crockery and glassware.

absolute 52 Fly Master Cabin

The 52 has a new lighting design throughout, with attractive waves of LED in the deck head above the cockpit and aft end of the salon. A new circular motif above the dinette cleverly mirrors the hard top on the flybridge.

The windows on both sides of the salon drop down to allow the natural breeze to run through the boat. We've seen this feature before on Absolutes and it means that on days that aren't too hot, you may be able to use these to ventilate the boat rather than firing up the air-con (and therefore the generator).

The television is neatly hidden on a pop-up mechanism behind the sofa to starboard, opposite a large dinette with a hi-lo table that can easily switch from dining to coffee table height.

Absolute 52 Fly main deck

The lower deck layout works brilliantly because by shifting the owner's cabin to a mid-deck forward, the VIP cabin can occupy the full width of the beam amidships. It's a similar layout to Absolute's own 56 Fly without the ensuite bathroom for the VIP cabin. This arrangement benefits the owner as much as their guests, though, because the space and comfort levels in the owner's suite are excellent. As are the views, thanks to those enormous hull windows. With the bed (2,000mm x 1,600mm) mounted aft on the centreline, the bow is full of bathroom and it works well, delivering a smartly finished ensuite that uses the geometry of the cabin intelligently. The attention to fine detail is excellent once again, right up there with the best in this sector.

The VIP could be another owner's suite and, if you're sleeping on anchor or are tied to a buoy, it may be the place to sleep as you won't get the slapping of water on the hull that you do upfront. There is an intrusion towards the top of the bed that those 6ft or over will need to watch out for but apart from that it's a very easy cabin to move around inside and it's dotted with plenty of useful storage solutions. The lack of an ensuite may put some people off but the day head, shared with the twin cabin, isn't far away.

The twin cabin is well thought out. Headroom is good and, as standard, you get electric sliding berths (1,940mm x 670mm) that switch from twins to double at the touch of a button. Rival boats offer this but most as a cost option. It also has direct access via a small door to the void beneath the owner's cabin, offering excellent access to the bow thruster for those maintaining the boat and some very useful bag storage for those sleeping in this cabin.

The crew accommodation aft is just about spacious enough to work as an occasional cabin but very few of these boats will be run with the crew. The best option is probably to have the space lined out for storage but keep the bathroom so that those who've been for a swim can go to the toilet and have a shower without traipsing water through the interior of the boat.

Helm Station

Absolute's helms were the best in the business before it came up with this all-new design for the 52 and, somehow, it's made them even better. The lower helm is particularly good thanks to its beautifully clean design with a pair of angled pods that direct the MFDs toward the skipper and create a driver-focussed, cockpit-like feel. The twin helm seats are adjustable and have a bolster section so you can stand at the helm and drive; the relationship between the adjustable steering wheel, throttles, and IPS joystick is absolutely perfect.

Absolute 52 Fly Helm Station

There is the option of a third control station in the cockpit is welcome but with the joystick at the lower helm positioned so closely to the side door, it's a brilliant spot to moor the boat from and the all-around view is excellent. There aren't boarding gates on either side of the cockpit but having them amidships on both sides makes it far easier for the skipper to help out handling lines if they need to.

The upper helm isn't as stylish as the one downstairs but it has all of the same ergonomic touchpoints. A good example is the positioning of the throttles and joystick on the same molding but the latter is mounted higher so you can reach it more easily when standing up and throttles are set low so they are more comfortable to reach when seated out at sea. Positioning the navigator's seat outside of the skipper's means that they can move in and out of the helm without disturbing the driver, too. It's all very well thought out and near impossible to fault.

The cockpit follows a familiar form with its modular furniture and open haunches though some updates are new for the 52. The lighting design in the overhang is fresh as is the small lip of the smoked glass and stainless steel that adds some protection to the open gunwales while maintaining the views out over the water.

Foredeck of Absolute 52 Fly

Absolute's supplied furniture is lovely stuff that can be arranged in myriad ways, either as single armchairs or, because the armrests can be removed, sofas and day beds. It's so much more flexible and comfortable than a fixed bench. The open transom also means that those in the cockpit have a great view over the hydraulic bathing platform and can easily keep an eye on people in the water.

The side decks require a sideways shuffle to move along them as they aren't the widest in the class but with tall guardrails and toerails it feels perfectly safe to negotiate them. The 52 Fly has one of the best foredecks in the class. The side decks are linked by a passageway that splits the sofa and sun pad, which makes getting from one side of the boat to the other far easier. The sun pad has a clever hinged backrest that acts either as a headrest for sunbathers or creates a bench that faces aft to join the hi-lo teak table. The entire area can be shaded by a canopy that attaches to carbon fiber poles, which stow in the engine room.

Flybridge of the Absolute 52 Fly

Flying High

The flybridge feels large in this sector. The overhang extends a long way back and is square in its design so there is lots of space at the aft end for yet more free-standing furniture. A hard top is an option but there is no sunroof available on this model, just the potential to add 1,320W solar panels to top up the domestic energy supply. The lighting motif on the underside of the top is the same as in the salon, which is a nice touch. As is the way the wet bar has been so neatly integrated into the aft end of the dinette sofa. It's a well-designed bar with built-in storage for the liferaft and a useful open shelf to stow towels and other loose items. The sink is standard but you'll need to add the fridge and grill to make the most of it.

Forward, there is a big dinette with a handsome teak table on a fixed pedestal and a good spread of sunbathing space adjacent to the two-person helm station.

Value For Money

The base price of the 52 Fly at the time of writing is €UR 1.34M million ex VAT but as with most of its competitors, there are a few options that need to be added to get it to a turn-key specification.

The hydraulic bathing platform would be worth adding for functionality as would the hard top, with or without the solar panels. Unless the extra berth is going to be of use, selecting the crew cabin to be lined out with the addition of the bathroom would be an effective use of this space and endow the boat with a vast amount of dry, easily accessed gear storage.

Absolute 52 Fly exterior

If you moor stern-to then the third control station in the cockpit is definitely worth thinking about, even with the view from both the lower and upper helms being so good. The Seakeeper is an expensive option but it does make a big difference to comfort levels when the boat is at anchor, so if you spend a lot of time doing that it's worth considering.

Ultimately the 52 Fly is at the more expensive end of the market but it feels like a quality product through and through.

It's impossible to come to a concrete conclusion about a boat without experiencing how it feels out at sea but the initial signs are very positive for the 52 Fly. Being a scaled-down version of the larger flybridge boats in the range is no bad thing because Absolute is on a roll at the moment and the three-cabin arrangement suffers very few compromises and sets the standard for space and comfort at this size of boat. The custom furniture arrangement on the deck allows for an impressive amount of customization for a boat in this sector, but you won't be disappointed with what Absolute offers either. The attention to detail is excellent throughout and there are so many small touches that will make the boat a real joy to live with. We're yet to drive it but in every other area, the 52 Fly is as good as it gets.

Reasons to Buy

  • Voluminous interior
  • Versatile deck spaces
  • Quality and attention to detail
  • Spacious flybridge

Things to Consider

  • VIP cabin isn't ensuite

Naturally, the 52 Fly has a raft of rivals from competitor brands but look inside the Absolute stable first, shall we? The 56 Fly is the next rung on the Absolute flybridge ladder and the jump in price is around €200,000 so what are you getting for your money? Well, it's longer and wider so there is more space throughout, most noticeably on the flybridge and lower deck where you can get two crew berths instead of one and an extra bathroom for guests. Performance is likely to be pretty much identical, though the 52 could well be a bit punchier given it's lighter than the 56 but uses the same Volvo Penta IPS800 engines with 600hp. The question is, is the 56's biggest rival now the 52?

Outside of the Absolute stable, there is plenty to challenge the 52. Galeon's 500 Fly has been around a little while now but even the brilliantly versatile 52 Fly can get close the Galeon's outstanding beach club mode arrangement with drop-down terraces and a rotating transom seating arrangement that is a stroke of genius. It can, unlike the Absolute, also be had with a tender garage big enough for a Williams Minijet. Below deck, there are three cabins, including a full beam owner's suite amidships, a double VIP and a third cabin with a pair of bunks. It's available with a variety of Volvo Penta shaft drive engine options (D11 725s the pick) or IPS, though it's an expensive option. For sheer deck space, it's untouchable.

Azimut's 53 isn't as functional as the Absolute but with exterior design by Alberto Mancini and an eye-popping Achille Salvagni interior, it's a cracking-looking boat. It's all sharp lines and subtle curves in comparison to the bombastic Absolute, which is a more acquired taste. Like the 53 Fly, the Azimut has a three-cabin, two-bathroom layout with space for a single crew member aft but the interior design really is like nothing else in the market. The 53 also runs on IPS but the larger D11 725hp blocks of IPS950 so its top speed is more in the region of 32 knots and it will cruise a bit more quickly, too.

The Sunseeker Manhattan 55 (and its predecessor, the Manhattan 52) is one of the most popular boats that the Poole shipyard has ever produced. It's easy to see why given the mix of performance, style and interior space. Attention to detail and finish also took a marked turn for the better with the 55, too. Like the Galeon 500, it's available with IPS or shafts and will top out at around 32 knots. It's one of the more engaging boats in the sector to drive, too, as you expect of something wearing the Sunseeker crest. The layout is quite similar to the Absolute's, though there is more fixed furniture on the flybridge. It's a great all-rounder.

Absolute 52 Fly

Absolute Yachts’ most recent model is the 52 Fly, which rolled out at the 2023 Miami International Boat Show. From the first step aboard, it was clear the Italian builder had sweated not only the details, but also pushed the genre ahead of its competition.

The hull’s glazing, resembling a short, tanto-bladed knife and a vertical bow up front, also added to the contemporary design. Undulating LED lighting inlays in the cockpit overhang imparted a cool, sophisticated look to the space. At the same time, a starboard-side docking station spoke to this boat’s bona fides as a serious cruising machine.

The salon also had design touches that one might not expect to find on a 52-ft. semi-custom build. The aft galley had a four-burner Bosch cooktop and a six-foot-tall, stacked refrigerator and freezer that is useful for longer trips. The drawers all had chic leather tabs as handles, extending a beach-like, elegant vibe to the space.

Absolute 52 Fly flybridge motoryacht

The starboard-side helm was another place onboard that feels just a little bit different than the standard offerings in this size and class.

Twin Garmin screens were angled off in a small arc, as opposed to facing straight back, which gave them a slightly futuristic feel. Tightly stitched helix patterns in the seat-backs of the helm chairs pointed towards a high level of fit and finish.

A sturdy door next to the helm led to the side deck. Perhaps most important for the helmsperson, the Volvo Penta joystick control was maneuverable while standing on that side deck. The joystick and cockpit control station should make docking this boat easier than a conventional setup.

One of the other significant layouts was the flybridge. Absolute managed to make it look stylish and large, without appearing top heavy. The design included a large forward lounge surrounding the helm station, with back-to-front seats to port, and an L-shaped lounge extending back to the transom, with a center dining table. The side island with fridge can also double as a serving station. The overhead hardtop had an opening center window, and stereo speakers were embedded into the bridge.

Our final impression after a tour aboard: The Absolute 52 Fly was more than the sum of its parts. The boat was full-featured without looking crowded, but also highly functional. This 52-footer was clearly ready for a weekend cruise or extended voyage. The Italian builder proved that a well-conceived design makes for a well-rounded boat.

Shipyard review: Absolute, Italy’s inland innovators

  • April 22, 2021

Located over 100km inland of coastal cities like Genoa and yacht-building hubs like La Spezia and Viareggio, the Absolute facility is a self-contained hub of in-house innovation, automation, craftsmanship and friendly, family-style management. By Clare Mahon.

absolute yachts quality

Absolute is situated outside Piacenza, situated 60km southeast of Milan in northern Italy

I’m driving around looking for the Absolute shipyard, my instincts and my navigation app at war. There’s not a body of water in sight. A green sea of freshly ploughed fields is all around me and the aroma is of farmland, not low tide.

Feeling I must be way off track, I pull over to see what’s wrong. Suddenly, a truck loaded with Volvo Penta IPS engines passes me. Follow that truck, I tell myself, and soon I’m there.

The entrance to the five-hectare production facility

Sergio Maggi and Marcello Bè founded Absolute in 2002 in an area outside of Piacenza where the other major industry is … tomato canning. After all, Piacenza is in northern Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, renowned for its local produce including ham, salami, cheese and pasta, as well as wine.

This, plus the fact the Med is about 100km south, make it an unusual location for shipbuilding, but Maggi and Bè are locals and wanted to stay close to their roots and the hardworking local talent.

The two had met while employed at Cantieri Nautici Gobbi, but when the company was sold, they decided to branch off and establish a yard of their own. Four years later, looking for ways to increase automation in their production lines, they asked former boss Angelo Gobbi to join them at Absolute.

“We started with nothing much more than a good first boat,” Maggi says. “Going forward, we had an idea of what we wanted, but we didn’t know how to get there. Angelo is our visionary. He had the knowhow and guided us to where we are today.”

Absolute is all about teamwork and efficiency, not ego. Gobbi happily joined his former employees as a partner and put his skills to work creating a state-of-the-art facility spread over almost 50,000sqm – imagine seven football pitches – where boats are built using an optimised production chain called Integrated Structural System or ISS.

A hull prepared for deck trimming

Hulls are hand-finished while their corresponding interior structures are precision cut by robotic arms using CNC technology. Dedicated teams then assemble the interiors in modules and lower them into the hulls.

After the interiors have been mounted and sealed, the hulls are taken out of their moulds and the running systems are installed. The organisation and automation are astounding, and the shipyard works around the clock.

After the human workforce goes home, robots and computers take over, fetching supplies from a large and recently expanded automatic warehouse then setting them up for the next day’s work.

While Absolute is open to every kind of software upgrade and technological improvement, Maggi says that building a yacht will never be a fully automated or entirely industrial process.

absolute yachts quality

Automated machinery in the warehouse

“We can try to organise delivery and production to the highest degree, but there will always be a lot of handwork involved in laying a hull and mounting running systems. We design everything in 3D and nothing is left to chance, but we will still always need humans to do quality control,” Maggi says.

It’s this blend of humanity and technology that makes Absolute Yachts special. Everything at Absolute is done in-house by a tightly knit team headed by management and ownership that are one and the same. “And we’re here all day, every day,” says Cesare Mastroianni, CCO and Vice President of Sales.

absolute yachts quality

Giuseppe Bertocci (Head of Production), co-founders Sergio Maggi and Marcello Bè, Paola Carini (Administration & HR), Angelo Gobbi (President), Patrizia Gobbi (General Manager) and Cesare Mastroianni (CCO & Vice President of Sales)

The shipyard staff is like an extended family, but unlike most families, they work well as a team and seem to like each other. This all-in-it-together approach allows Absolute to move quickly and stay flexible.

“We have invested in our people,” says Mastroianni. “We don’t need to have a lot of meetings. Sometimes we just discuss ideas by the coffee machine.”

IN-HOUSE CREATIVITY

Maggi, who on top of being a co-founder also heads the design department, echoes Mastroianni’s words.

“We believe in staying independent and doing everything in-house. Yes, maybe you miss having people bring you new ideas from outside, but if you do that, you’re always trying to chase a new concept, looking for solutions to new problems,” Maggi says.

absolute yachts quality

Absolute uses 3D printing and modelling in their yacht designs

“Absolute’s approach is more like adaptive evolution because the team that has created all the best features of previous yachts know which ones to apply to new models. We’re building on our experience and the suggestions we get from our owners and dealers.”

Absolute works with a ratio of about one stylist to three engineers. “The stylist does their part, then shows their work to the engineers and they take over the project,” Maggi says.

“This means we have a perfect synergy between our production and our style departments. They go hand in hand, and this helps us to guarantee quality. We don’t go for impact or extras – everything is functional.

absolute yachts quality

The bodywork department

“Maybe an owner who’s looking for a status symbol won’t like what we do, but an owner who wants to live aboard and enjoy their yacht in safety and comfort will find what they’re looking for in an Absolute.”

Keep in mind that these are Italians, so style, even if it’s functional style, is always part of the package, as are bon vivant touches like wine cellars and stemmed glasses designed to adhere magnetically to tabletops. And in a yachting market that’s constantly changing, Absolute likes to stay a step or two ahead.

“We try to come up with two new boat designs per year because the market is changing all the time,” Maggi says. “It usually takes us about a year to develop a model, but in my head right now I’m thinking of four or five new projects – two we’ve just begun, two in the final stages of planning and one that’s still to come. The cycle is continuous and keeps us busy.”

absolute yachts quality

Absolute’s quality department overlooks the factory floor

One thing that seems like it will never change is Absolute’s love for a certain propulsion system, Maggi confirms. “Volvo IPS forever! When we were designing our first model, we heard that IPS was coming and we contacted Volvo right away. I think we were the first to use them.”

From a builder’s point of view, Maggi loves how IPS works with industrial production methods and can be mounted in a smaller aft space. And he also likes the client comfort that comes with reduced noise and vibration, as well as the improved fuel consumption.

FROM LAND TO SEA

While Absolute’s ultra-sophisticated build technology seems to know no limits, the dimensions of Italy’s autostrada expressways pose some strict ones for a yard located quite some distance from the sea. Yachts over 52ft are divided into hull and superstructure before being trucked down to the open water, otherwise they wouldn’t fit through tunnels or under overpasses.

absolute yachts quality

The superstructure of a 60 Fly is prepared to be lowered onto the hull

“We have a lot of experience in designing for the maximum possible size for overland transportation and we’re very quick at dissembling and re-assembling our yachts,” Mastroianni says.

“I can’t reveal any secrets, but over the years we’ve perfected a kind of plug-and-play system for re-joining the electrical and hydraulic systems between hull and superstructure. We can have a yacht up to 58ft ready to go in just 36 hours, whereas larger yachts are ready with all commissioning systems tested in 10 days.”

Just as Absolute’s production system is all in-house, its sales network is entirely run by their own dealers, which in Asia include Hong Kong-based Absolute Marine, whose orders for the city include the new Navetta 64, set to arrive in late 2021.

absolute yachts quality

An Absolute Navetta 48 in the test pool

“We invest in the yard, its technology and in new models but we also invest in our dealers, backing them up and keeping them informed,” Mastroianni says. “We began working in the Far East in 2012 in China and then in Hong Kong. Later, we began working in Japan and Taiwan and lately in Singapore. We have recently appointed a dealer in Thailand.

“Thomas Woo [of Absolute Marine] in Hong Kong is one of our top dealers, both for the volume of boats that he sells and for the fact that he sells consistently well across our entire range. It’s a niche market, but he knows his business.”

Boarding an Absolute yacht, you may find yourself curious about the unusual, volume-maximising lines, but rest assured that you’ll step back to shore impressed by the build quality and the planning and intelligence that have gone into getting the most liveability out of every millimetre.

SUNNY FUTURE

Absolute is constantly updating its range to keep on top of market trends and is still receiving acclaim for the Navetta 64 that debuted late last year, due in large to the innovative option of a convertible aft cabin beside the swim platform.

This year’s new models will be the 48’ Coupé and the 60 Fly, the former introducing a new series featuring solar power, while the latter offers the option of solar panels on the hardtop.

Absolute 60 Fly features forward master The upcoming Absolute 60 Fly features a full-beam master cabin forward on the lower deck, following the designs on the Italian builder’s larger models.

Maggi says: “The 60 Fly will be a new reference point for flybridge yachts, a boat that will establish the parameters for this typology of yacht in the years to come.”

Not surprisingly for a shipyard that loves engineering as much as design, Absolute set up a mini solar energy plant to find the best type of solar panels to mount on its yachts, with the system to be rolled out on the 48 Coupè.

absolute yachts quality

The master cabin on the 60 Fly is forward

Translucent solar panels in the roofing will produce energy for running the boat’s hotel systems while also letting light, but not heat, filter into the saloon. You can drop anchor, turn off your engine and generators, and enjoy the clean air and silence. Interestingly, Maggi says the Coupè design is more reflective of Absolute’s earliest ranges (Sport Cruiser, Sport Yacht, Sport Line) than the subsequent Fly and Navetta lines.

“The 48’ Coupè is the modern heir to our first boats, but things have changed in the meantime. Clients used to want something fast and glamorous, and didn’t really care about living on the water. Now, on top of moving fast, our clients want a comfortable boat where they can entertain and stay aboard for extended periods of time. Now, you need function and ease of use,” Maggi says.

Absolute 60 Fly features forward master Italian builder plans to debut 48 Coupé at Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2021

“The Coupé still has a sporty soul and delivers on the water, but it’s also comfortable and sustainable. We designed extra-large windows that open and close like car windows, so there’s as much fresh air moving through the boat as possible. The aft section has openings in the gunwales and glass under the aft railing so you can see the water at all times.”

Ironically, the Absolute shipyard doesn’t have such views of the sea, but it does have a management team with a crystal-clear vision of what they want for their clients and how to deliver it. www.absoluteyachts.com

Only a few days are now left until the start of the 2023 edition of the FLIBS – Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show – and among the many high-profile exhibitors, Absolute Yachts certainly stands out as one of the most anticipated participants.

Backed by a reputation for excellence and innovation, the Piacenza-based shipyard is preparing an extraordinary experience for luxury yacht enthusiasts and industry experts who will visit the booth, which, as always, will be one of the busiest in the entire show.

As many as five boats will be on display, the 48 Coupe, the Navetta 52, the 62 Fly, the Navetta 68 and the award-winning Navetta 75. So let’s find out together what we will see at FLIBS 2023:

Absolute Yachts al FLIBS 2023

The winner of the Best Interior Design prize at the World Yachts Trophies 2022, Navetta 75 is the flagship of the Absolute Yachts fleet, capable of giving the impression of a vessel of even greater size.

The aft deck features Absolute’s signature cockpit terrace, which enhances the feel of a boundless cruising experience by highlighting the sea view. The staterooms comprise a superb master suite in the bows for optimum silence and privacy, with large hullside windows and a spectacular full-beam bathroom.

On the Navetta 75, everything has been carefully studied right down to the smallest details. Whether it is the comprehensive entertainment equipment, the interior lighting, or the beautiful furnishings, Navetta 75 is a constant source of pleasure for the owner and his guests and will certainly be the most admired unit in the Absolute fleet at FLIBS 2023.

Navetta-75.jpg

Navetta 68 represents the synthesis of Absolute’s approach to contemporary luxury afloat. Every element of this boat, from the ample living spaces to the many functional areas, has been designed for optimum comfort and moments of pure pleasure aboard, as epitomized by the panoramic pillarless lateral windows in the saloon, which is seamlessly connected to the aft cockpit to create a vast open area surrounded by water for optimal socialization.

Above, the flybridge terrace enables the owner to navigate in the company of guests, with ample space for relaxation, an outdoor galley with dining table, and a setting distinctive for its sleek design and the flexibility made possible by modular, easily rearranged furniture.

As is customary for Absolute, the spaces below decks offer far more than would be expected from a 68-foot yacht, for an unparalleled cruising experience.

Navetta-68.jpg

Absolute 62 Fly

Absolute 62 Fly is rich of innovative features which provide a perfect combination of comfort, functionality and aesthetics. One of its most recognizable features is the continuous mirror windows along the hull that offer exceptional interior brightness, in addition to fantastic views. Outside, its dynamic looks are accompanied by comprehensively equipped areas in which to enjoy the cruise.

The flybridge incorporates a sun lounger, a double helm station, a table with surrounding sofa, barbecue and wet bar, and a terrace towards the stern that can be equipped with sunbeds. The saloon features the finest Italian interior design, hallmarked by timber, leather and quality fabric, while the accommodation below decks includes a full-beam master stateroom, a VIP stateroom positioned diagonally to maximize the space available, and a third twin with separate berths that can be rapidly converted into a double bed by means of an electrically controlled system. Another cabin aft is ideal for another two guests, or the crew.

Absolute-62-Fly.jpg

Navetta 52 embodies all the distinctive features of all Absolute yachts, offering the same spaces and comfort as a much larger vessel. The flybridge is a lofty open-air lounge, with a helm station surrounded by settees, a dinette and outdoor galley, and a stern area for relaxation on loose designer furniture.

Relaxation and conviviality continue at the bows, with settee and sun lounger, while the saloon features the 360-degree views that are an Absolute hallmark. The three staterooms below decks include a full-beam master stateroom midships, with panoramic windows, walk-in wardrobe, and ample storage space.

Absolute 48 Coupé

The Absolute Yachts 48 Coupé is the only boat capable of perfectly embodying the sporty soul of yachting. The brand’s impeccable comfort is accompanied by dynamic lines and the exceptional views offered by the open lateral gunwales and the glazed balustrades towards the stern.

Absolute’s commitment to sustainability is demonstrated by the 48 Coupé’s roof equipped with solar panels, and the electrically opening windows that offer effective natural air circulation, reducing the energy required for air conditioning.

ABSOLUTE YACHTS

MAKE YOUR YACHTING EXPERIENCE ABSOLUTE

The Absolute Yachts shipyard is located south of Milan. This is one of the best-known boatyards in Italy. With high-quality workmanship, luxurious equipment and exclusive design, the up to 73-foot-long noble yachts are among the top international yachts. “Make your yachting experience Absolute” is the essence of Absolute Yachts’ brand philosophy.

Absolute Navetta68 02

What is the Absolute Yachts trademark?

Quality and beauty are among the main values of these special yachts. Furthermore, efficiency and low environmental impact are synonymous with Absolute boats, which is why the shipyard installs Volvo Penta engines in their Absolute Yachts. These engines are known for efficient performance and low environmental impact. The low fuel consumption, reduced emissions and also a low noise level prove how important harmony with nature is to this Italian shipyard.

Absolute Navetta68 15

What distinguishes the Absolute Yachts shipyard?

The production process of Absolute Yachts is unique! To make the structure of the hull stable, multi-layer lattice structures made of Kevlar, glass fibre and carbon fibre are laminated over the entire hull. In addition, all wooden floors and ceilings are also fitted with glass fibre beams to ensure optimum structural resistance. Parallel to the hull of a boat, the associated interior fittings are created at the same time. This production process, called “Integrated Structural System” or ISS for short, differs significantly from traditional manufacturing methods. The goal behind it is to build boats that respond optimally to the diverse conditions on the high seas. Each new model from Absolute Yachts must meet the same efficiency criteria, such as light and robust construction, acoustic insulation and insulation.

What kind of yachts does Absolute Yachts build?

Currently Absolute Yachts has Navetta & Flybridge in the four model ranges in lengths between 47 and 73 feet, with the model range being constantly expanded to include the most successful models.

Design awards, interior design and innovation, and ‘Best European Boat of the Year’ are just some of the prestigious awards given to the Absolute 70STY (2010), the 53STY (2011), the 72FLY (2012), the Navetta 58 (2015), the Navetta73 and 50 Fly (2017) and the 58Fly (2018).

In 2019 and 2020 Absolute Yachts could once again win. BEST FLYBRIDGE YACHT (above 55ft to 80 ft) 2019 for the Absolute 58 Fly. In 2020 the Italian shipyard won the award for Best Innovation of the WOLRD YACHT TROPHIES for the excellent work of the Navetta 64. It also received an award from BEST OF BOATS 2020. The new year is still young but Absolute made it to win for the NAVETTA 64 the EUROPEAN POWERBOAT AWARD 2021.

Why are Absolute Yachts so popular with owners?

Absolute Yachts stands for elite sports boats and flybridge boats that meet the highest standards! Absolute boats generally have a large draught and an exceedingly large beam, which is why life on these yachts is so much fun. A highlight of Absolute Yachts is definitely the huge flybridge, which is much larger than those of other yacht manufacturers. It offers a generous seating and dining area and is usually equipped with an electric bimini top as standard. Relaxing hours on sunny days are guaranteed. A unique feature of Absolute yachts are the generous, frameless windows, which provide an endless view of the horizon. The light-flooded interior practically merges you with the sea. With precious natural materials such as wood, crystal, leather, marble and Murano glass, together with innovative solutions and high-quality designer furniture, every day on an Absolute yacht is unforgettable. The ceiling height is also a selling point for many primarily male customers.

This is always kept pleasantly high, so showering on the 47 ft yacht, for example, is easy even for tall people.

What are the latest top models from the Absolute Yachts shipyard?

Absolute Navetta 64

The Absolute Navetta 64 is one of the latest models in the Navetta line (2020). The wide and uninterrupted side glass window that extends from the aft transom to the windscreen outlines her exterior forms, which are characterised by the significant enlargement of the bow windows and the opening of the side gunwales in the cockpit. Generously proportioned at 19.60 metres long and 5.15 metres wide, she uses this space to the full. The wide hull offers spacious and luxurious cabins for family and friends with plenty of room for individuality. On board Navetta 64, all rooms are designed to offer the maximum enjoyment of space – always with panoramic views and very bright, thanks to windows of unprecedented size. The fly area has a far greater width than on any other 64-foot yacht. The special feature of the Navetta 64 is the completely new beach club function. This platform allows for a very nice living space close to the water. To ensure that this space is perfectly watertight, Absolute Yachts has developed an automatic inflatable sealing system as soon as the doors are closed. Uniqueness for days and nights right on the water!

The Fly area, which is one of the largest in the range, features a table surrounded by a sofa, a fully equipped kitchenette and a double helm station with another comfortable sun lounger. The third sunbathing area is located at the bow, easily accessible through a pleasant and well-protected walkway.

About absolute yachts.

  • June 3, 2021

Absolute Yachts is a globally-recognized Italian yacht manufacturer that has won many awards for its design capabilities as well as yacht performance. Headquartered in Podenzano, Italy, Absolute Yachts was founded by designer Sergio Maggi and construction guru Marcello Bé in 2002.

While the firm is known for it’s all-Italian make up and design reflected in the yachts it produces, Absolute Yachts is also known for its financial strength. Absolute Yachts was not only founded with a vision on how to build better yachts, but also with a vision on how to successfully manage a yacht manufacturing business. It’s this financial acumen that has aided Absolute in its growth over the last decade.

absolute yachts quality

The financial strength of Absolute Yachts is evident in the shipyard that produces the products marked with the Absolute brand. The investment in innovative industrial and construction processes is immediately evident. Absolute manages in-house the full life cycle of manufacturing from initial concept design through production, assembly and final setup of the yacht. Every detail of the process is given full attention and consideration. Pride of the workers shows not only in the end product, but also in the process that achieves that final product.

absolute yachts quality

While many manufacturers boast of high quality production processes, Absolute Yachts has a name for its process that goes back decades. The ISS, which stands for Integrated Structural System, is a build process that departs from the traditional method of most shipyards where a ship’s hull is extracted from its mould before additional components and systems are added. With the ISS approach, the precisely crafted elements are inserted into the hull while still in the mould. When the deck is added, the boat is closed and sealed while still in its mould. This results in a single, main structure with unprecedented strength and durability. This production method has won awards for the firm such as a recognition of innovation in a  production process at the Boat Builder Awards .

HISTORICAL Absolute Yachts MODELS

About absolute yachts.

Italy is known for its beauty, its food, and for its fine luxury cars. Italy is also known, however, for producing some of the most creative designers in the yachting industry today. The founders of Absolute Yachts, Marcello Bè and Sergio Maggi, are the epitome of what it means to push the envelope in today's yachting industry. From new technology to inclusion of the best materials, everything Absolute does is about the owner experience.

Known as being pioneers in modern day boat building, Marcello Bè and Sergio Maggi have grown Absolute under the Gobbi brand into what is considered one of the top luxury sport yacht and motor yacht manufacturers today. The company’s brand statement includes 7 key values that are intertwined with each yacht: “Quality, Experience With Innovation, Beauty, Safety, Respect for the Environment, Efficiency, and Solidity."

(Below: The all-new Absolute 52 Fly - new model debuted in 2023).

The company’s brand statement is “Reaching For The Absolute”, which refers to the thousands of hours in design, production, and quality control that go into building their each and every boat. It means to never settle for what is, but rather continue growing until the absolute goal is reached. It is with this in mind that the builder has created one of the most state-of-art shipyards in the world and boasts cutting-edge technology in 3D modeling systems. Even when working with other partners, Absolute excels in creating new ways to adapt existing technology, such as being one of the first to implement the Volvo IPS propulsion system that guarantees the best in efficiency and performance. In addition, Absolute’s designers worked tirelessly to design each model with service in mind. All components on board are easily accessible and can be worked on or removed without compromising the structural integrity of the hull.

Absolute has grown its fleet into four models ranges: Navetta, Flybridge Yachts, Sport Yachts, and Sport boats. Staten Island Yacht Sales is uniquely positioned in the Northeast to be able to handle the entire process with each customer from build to sea and will be there with a top service department and marina every step of the way. Absolute Yachts of Americas President, Cesare Mastroianni says, “We selected SI Yachts because of their many years of success and experience in a highly-competitive industry and for their commitment to provide consistently high levels of customer satisfaction. We are committed to putting our best energies and effort into this exciting new relationship with SI Yachts. They are a quality team perfectly matched and equipped to sell and service our yachts. It goes without saying; we look forward to this exciting expansion of our dealer network in the Northeast Americas”.

WHERE ARE ABSOLUTE YACHTS MADE?

The Absolute shipyard is located in Northern Italy, in the Province of Piacenza, and in the city of Podenzano. The facility includes over 157,000 square feet of production space and employs over 250 people. There are 7 departments within the shipyard that are all integrated into a unique production chain to maximize efficiency and quality control.

The address for the Absolute Yachts factory is :

Via F. Petrarca 4 Loc. I Casoni – Gariga 29027 Podenzano (PC) – Italy

Below is a video from "The Boat Show" that goes in depth into the Absolute factory:

WHAT DOES ABSOLUTE YACHTS DO DIFFERENTLY?

The hull of every Absolute Yacht features a strong, durable fiberglass structure that is reinforced with a multi-dimensional grid. All of the structural components of the yacht, from the bulkheads to the floors, are reinforced with fiberglass supports for additional strength.

The 48 Coupe' is a wonderful example of innovative concepts put into execution. Absolute had special motors created so that the large glass windows in the salon of this model could be lowered electrically. Additionally, new furniture has been designed for Absolute that is modular and free-standing. This allows owners to be able to creatively position their seating on the flybridge or cockpit to fit the conversation of their guests on board. The modular seats can also come with storage space underneath the cushions. Transparent solar panels have also been integrated into the hardtop that can power most of the electrical equipment on board, while also allowing the natural sunlight to filter into the interior.

ARE ABSOLUTE YACHTS GOOD BOATS?

Based on consistent awards, strong sales nationwide, and good resale value on the brokerage market, Absolute Yachts should be considered good boats for their class. Many reputable marine industry editors have tested and reviewed examples of every model range produced by Absolute. Here are examples of recent awards that Absolute boats have received:

  • Navetta 75 - Best Interior Design Award at World Yacht Trophies
  • 48 Coupe - European Powerboat of the Year (Under 65-feet)

What Tucker Carlson Saw in Moscow

He never quite says what precisely he thinks Russia gets right.

Tucker Carlson in Russian supermarket

Listen to this article

Produced by ElevenLabs and News Over Audio (NOA) using AI narration.

Tucker Carlson went to Moscow last week and had an absolute blast. He rode the subway and marveled at its clean cars, the fancy tilework in Kievskaya Station, and the lack of booze-drenched hobos. He went to a grocery store and was astonished by what ordinary people could apparently buy. He even managed to meet a local history buff and sit down for tea and conversation. Carlson, who had never previously visited Moscow, declared himself “radicalized” against America’s leaders by the experience. He didn’t want to live in Moscow, but he did want to know why we in America have to put up with street crime and crappy food when the supposedly bankrupt Russia provided such a nice life for its people, or at least those people not named Alexei Navalny .

My former Atlantic colleague Ralph Waldo Emerson called travel a “fool’s paradise,” but not all forms of foolishness are equal. Many commentators have guffawed at Carlson’s Russophilia and pointed out that Russia’s murder rate is roughly that of the United States, and that its citizens are dirt poor, about a fifth as wealthy per capita as the citizens of the United States overall. “I don’t care what some flagship supermarket in an imperial city looks like,” The Dispatch ’s Jonah Goldberg tweeted. “Russia is far, far poorer than our poorest state, Mississippi.” Bloomberg ’s Joe Weisenthal suggested that Carlson instead visit the grocery stores of the “10th or 50th” richest Russian cities, and see how they compare with America’s.

In 2019, I visited several large and small Russian cities, and I went grocery shopping at least once in each. Would you believe that Tucker Carlson is on to something? In Moscow (the largest) and St. Petersburg (No. 2), the flagship supermarkets are indeed spectacular. The Azbuka Vkusa branch next to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow is more luxurious than any grocery store within 100 miles of Washington, D.C. Other branches in Moscow vary in quality, and they are usually smaller than American supermarkets. But to some extent that’s just a matter of culture: The U.S. has fewer supermarkets, but each one is big enough to feed the 82nd Airborne Division for a month; in Europe, supermarkets are more numerous but tiny.

Anne Applebaum: The false romance of Russia

Makhachkala (22), the capital of Dagestan, followed a similar pattern to Moscow. One supermarket downtown was amazing, the equal of an upscale supermarket in Washington or Dallas. On the outskirts the quality varied, but not drastically. Local residents were not eating soups made from grass clippings. In Murmansk (71), the cramped bodega near my rented flat had a good wine selection and enough fresh staple foods to prepare a different meal your mom would approve of every day of the week. Only in Derbent (134) did I start to wonder whether the bad old days of the Soviet Union were still in effect. But even that would be an exaggeration. In Derbent, for $15, you could get champagne and caviar with blini and velvety sour cream. If you want to flash back to Cold War communism, go to Havana. There the grocery stores stock only dust and mildew.

With apologies to Emerson, travel can disabuse you of foolish notions just as often as it plants them in your head. An idea ripe for dispelling among Americans at this particular moment is that life in Russia must suck because the frigid depression of the Cold War never ended. In those days ordinary citizens were spied upon and tortured and killed, and the shops were empty, save for substandard goods at prices few could afford. Now Russia is different. The state repression is much more limited, though no less brutal toward those who attract its attention. Until the Ukraine war added a huge category of forbidden topics, the main ones that you could get locked up for discussing were war in the Caucasus and the personal life and finances of President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle. Most other topics were broachable, and you could whine all you liked about them.

Equally in need of updating are American expectations about Russian economic misery. Those whose visits to Russia stopped 20 years ago tend to have outdated views of the best the country has to offer. My visits started 24 years ago. Back then, I spent days at a time on the Trans-Siberian, crammed into railway cabins with little to do but talk with Russians and see how they lived. Life was not beautiful. The men busied themselves with crosswords and sullenly browsed pornography. When not in motion, I stayed with Russian friends in single-room flats that looked straight out of a New York tenement building 100 years ago. No one I met was starving, but women sometimes approached me in train stations hoping to rent out their homes or bodies, or to sell me family heirlooms. That type of desperation seems to have subsided, although I would be shocked if any of those people are able to buy the jamón ibérico at the Smolenskaya branch of Azbuka Vkusa yet. On the roads between the big cities, there are still villages so ramshackle that they look like sets from The Little Rascals . Evidence suggests that the Russian military’s frontline troops tend to come from these depressed and benighted lands, the places that really are stuck in the 20th century.

Certain aspects of life remain dismal even in the cities. My flat in Murmansk had surly drunks tottering outside its entrance, and its stairwell smelled like every cat, dog, and human resident had marked its territory there regularly since the Brezhnev era. But the playgrounds were decent, and you could get a delicious smoked-reindeer pizza at a cozy restaurant for $7. Remember, this is in a small, depressed Russian city—not somewhere stocked with goodies just in case an American wanders out of the lobby of the Radisson and needs to be impressed. The “useful idiots” of yesteryear were treated to fake Moscows, which evanesced as soon as the next Aeroflot flights took off. The luxuries of Moscow that Carlson sees, and that I saw, are not evanescent, and they are not (as they are in North Korea, say) a curated experience available only to those on controlled visits.

The stubborn belief that all good things in Russia must be illusory can in turn warp one’s analysis of the country, and in particular of Putin’s durability in power. After all, why would anyone remain loyal to an autocrat who delivered only hunger, penury, and the reek of cat piss? Putin rules by fear but not only by fear. Most Russians will tell you that Russia today is better than it was before Putin. They compare it not with the Soviet era but with the anarchy and decline of the 1990s. Life expectancy has risen, public parks are better maintained, and certain fruits of capitalism can be tasted by Russians of all classes. Who would risk these gains? Like every autocrat, Putin has ensured that his downfall just might destroy every good thing Russia has experienced in the past two decades. This risk is, from the perspective of regime continuity, a positive feature, because it keeps all but the most principled and brave opposition quiet, and content to shut up and enjoy their cheap caviar. Those like Navalny who object do not object for long.

Carlson’s videos never quite say what precisely he thinks Russia gets right. Moscow is in many ways superior to New York. But Paris has a good subway system too. Japan and Thailand have fine grocery stores, and I wonder, when I enter them, why entering my neighborhood Stop & Shop in America is such a depressing experience by comparison. Carlson’s stated preference for Putin’s leadership over Joe Biden’s suggests that the affection is not for fine food or working public transit but for firm autocratic rule—which, as French, Thais, and Japanese will attest, is not a precondition for high-quality goods and services. And in an authoritarian state, those goods and services can serve to prolong the regime.

I confess I still enjoy watching Carlson post videos of Moscow, wide-eyed and credulous as he slowly learns to love a country that I love too. I hope he posts more of them. One goes through stages of love for Russia, often starting with the literature and music, then moving to its dark humor and the personalities of its people, which are always cycling between thaw and frost. Inevitably one reflects on the irony that this civilization, whose achievement is almost without equal in some respects, is utterly cursed in others—consigned to literally centuries of misgovernment, incompetence, and tyranny. The final stage is realizing that the greatness of Russia is part of the curse, a heightening of the irony, as if no matter how much goes right, something is deeply wrong. Maybe when things go right, the more deeply wrong it is. Carlson seems to still be in one of the early stages of this journey.

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Visiting Moscow? Get yourself a metro card and explore Moscow’s beautiful metro stations. Moscow’s world-famous metro system is efficient and a great way to get from A to B. But there is more to it; Soviet mosaic decorations, exuberant halls with chandeliers, colourful paintings and immense statues. Moscow’s metro is an attraction itself, so take half a day and dive into Moscow’s underground!

The best thing to do is to get on the brown circle (number 5) line since the most beautiful metro stations are situated on this line. The only exception is the metro stop Mayakovskaya one the green line (number 2). My suggestion is to get a map, mark these metro stops on there and hop on the metro. It helps to get an English > Russian map to better understand the names of the stops. At some of the metro stops, the microphone voice speaks Russian and English so it’s not difficult at all.

Another thing we found out, is that it’s worth taking the escalator and explore the other corridors to discover how beautiful the full station is.

Quick hotel suggestion for Moscow is the amazing Brick Design Hotel .

These are my favourite metro stations in Moscow, in order of my personal preference:

1. Mayakovskaya Station

The metro station of Mayakovskaya looks like a ballroom! Wide arches, huge domes with lamps and mosaic works make your exit of the metro overwhelming. Look up and you will see the many colourful mosaics with typical Soviet pictures. Mayakovskaya is my personal favourite and is the only stop not on the brown line but on the green line.

2. Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya metro station is famous for its yellow ceiling. An average museum is nothing compared to this stop. Splendour all over the place, black and gold, mosaic – again – and enormous chandeliers that made my lamp at home look like a toy.

3. Novoslobodskaya Station

The pillars in the main hall of Novoslobodskaya metro station have the most colourful stained glass decorations. The golden arches and the golden mosaic with a naked lady holding a baby in front of the Soviet hammer and sickle, make the drama complete.

4. Prospect Mira Station

The beautiful chandeliers and the lines in the ceiling, make Prospekt Mira an architectural masterpiece.

5. Belorusskaya Station

Prestigious arches, octagonal shapes of Socialistic Soviet Republic mosaics. The eyecatcher of Belorusskaya metro station, however, is the enormous statue of three men with long coats, holding guns and a flag.

6. Kiyevskaya Station

The metro station of Kiyevskaya is a bit more romantic than Belorusskaya and Prospect Mira. Beautiful paintings with classical decorations.

7. Taganskaya Station

At the main hall Taganskaya metro station you will find triangle light blue and white decorations that are an ode to various Russians that – I assume – are important for Russian history and victory. There is no need to explore others halls of Taganskaya, this is it.

8. Paveletskaya Station

Another and most definitely the less beautiful outrageous huge golden mosaic covers one of the walls of Paveletskaya. I would recommend taking the escalator to the exit upstairs to admire the turquoise dome and a painting of the St Basil’s Cathedral in a wooden frame.

It’s absolutely beautiful! Moscow is a great city trip destination and really surprised me in many ways.

My partner and I did a self guided Moscow Metro tour when we were there 2 years ago. So many breathtaking platforms…I highly recommend it! Most of my favorites were along the Brown 5 line, as well. I also loved Mayakovskaya, Arbatskaya, Aleksandrovski Sad and Ploshchad Revolyutsii. We’re heading back in a few weeks and plan to do Metro Tour-Part 2. We hope to see the #5 stations we missed before, as well as explore some of the Dark Blue #3 (Park Pobedy and Slavyansky Bul’var, for sure), Yellow #8 and Olive #10 platforms.

That’s exciting Julia! Curious to see your Metro Tour-Part 2 experience and the stations you discovered.

Everything depends on the region. In province people in most cases try to buy their own property but in Moscow the situation is controversial. The Moscow market is ever changing and growing. In Soviet times, property was state-owned and people only had the right to “use” them. Nowadays everyone can buy their own apartment but only in theory.

Lenin and Stalin happen to be the most prominent and influential leaders of modern Soviet Union. The first one was Lenin and he totally changed the whole political system in Russia. 20. Where can tourists buy cheap matryoshka and other souvenirs? What other Russian souvenirs are worth buying? Where are the best prices?

On our Moscow tours we do not recommend our tourists to buy souvenirs in the Moscow city center especially in the most common touristic places, nearby Moscow attractions such as Arbat, Red Square etc. The prices will be too high. The best decision is to find some flea markets. For example, Izmailovsky Market. The biggest and most popular flea market in Moscow sells almost every souvenir imaginable: from Soviet antiques, to paintings to Asian rugs. The further you go in, the lower the prices and the more likely you are to get great deals.
