A guide to East Providence: Because what else can you do?

A note to readers: A version of this story was originally published the day after the westbound side of the Washington Bridge closed. On Monday, state officials acknowledged their original three-month estimate to repair the bridge is out the window , and that a full rebuild is one potential outcome. Given that news, and the continued traffic headaches in East Providence even with temporary westbound lanes open on the eastbound side of Interstate 195, it appears that this story is still going to be relevant for awhile.

STUCK IN EAST PROVIDENCE — They say East Providence is the place where Townie pride never sleeps. And now, with the closure of westbound lanes of the Washington Bridge, it’s the place where Townie pride never leaves, either.

With the Rhode Island trafficmageddon upon us, the Boston Globe’s Rumford bureau has decided to put together this guide to East Providence. Because what else can we do? Try to drive somewhere? Ha! Hahaha! [sobs uncontrollably.]

This is for East Providence residents who are looking for a reminder of a favorite place to walk or bike. It’s also for Seekonkers and Swanseans who need a place to stop for provisions before they try to ford the river with their team of oxen. Mainly, though, it’s to pass the time until the state fixes this mess. It’s hitting East Providence particularly hard right, leading to long commutes, gridlocked local streets, and in some cases, distance learning for city schools.

Best places to eat

O Dinis: I’ve written and talked a decent amount about this Portuguese restaurant on Warren Avenue. Imagine how much I think about it! It’s really that good. Go on a Monday for fado night and really feel the saudade over the life we used to have.

Other options that people on social media suggested: Honeybird Kitchen and Cocktails , Sun & Moon Korean Restaurant , Red Bridge Tavern , Sax’s, Chong Qing House , Ourplace II Diner , Khaosan Thai Street Food , Jeff’s Pizza , Bella’s Italian Deli .

Best places to drown your sorrows with an alcoholic beverage

The East Providence Yacht Club , for the uninitiated, isn’t the Judge Smails type of yacht club. Think Keno and Bud Light, not cardigans and tax avoidance schemes. Before a recent renovation, it might have even been called a bit divey (in a good way). But the views, especially now that the old bridge to nowhere has been removed, are spectacular; you can see all the way to the faraway land that is Providence. And although some will miss the decrepit old bridge, the yacht club now gets to be the place where the bridge used to be. In Rhode Island, what’s better than that? Infrastructure that actually works? Ha! Hahaha! [sobs uncontrollably]

Other options: Skeff’s Pub , which is offering traffic jam specials . Wine events at Brands of Portugal . The brand-new Crook Point Brewing Company is trying to make the most of the situation by extending its hours. While you’re at the brewery, you can mull over my bold plan to lower the Crook Point Bascule Bridge and let us walk over “Stand By Me” style .

Best place to perk up with some coffee and a pastry

Taunton Avenue is probably going to be one of the most challenging places in the known universe (i.e. Rhode Island) for the foreseeable future, so it’s only right that you should stop by a couple of the bakeries and cafes there. Cafe Zara is absolutely top notch, my No. 1 choice in the city. Taunton Avenue Bakery is a great place for an espresso and a pastel de nata. You’ll need it. Elsewhere, Borealis Coffee Company in Riverside is not to be missed.

Best place to get outside

Turner Reservoir in Rumford takes about an hour to walk all the way around — the same amount of time it’ll take you to drive a couple blocks in some parts of East Providence these days. The scenery is much nicer to look at than your dashboard. You might have to get creative when parking , but as for traffic, the most you’ll find is some nice ducks and geese swimming in the water. Honk honk.

Other options: The Ten Mile River Greenway . The East Bay Bike Path might actually be the best way to get to Providence these days. (Maybe they’ll actually plow it when it snows while the Washington Bridge is being worked on?)

Best arts, culture, and history

Knock knock. Who’s there? Not the governor on the day of the closure ! I kid, I kid. Seriously, though, folks, those are the sorts of jokes you definitely will not hear at the Comedy Connection , a club in East Providence that gets good acts.

Other options: The Crescent Park Carousel . The bar/music venue/vintage store Myrtle is getting rave reviews. The 133 Club has live performances. And last but not least: The John Hunt House at Hunt’s Mills is really nice, taking you back to the age of getting around on a horse and buggy. Man, those were the days.

See more coverage of the Washington Bridge closure in R.I.

With westbound traffic limited on Interstate 195, traffic often proceeds slowly through East Providence, including the Henderson Bridge into Providence.

East Providence ‘bridge to nowhere’ is now gone

After decades of doing little but collecting rust, the last remaining section of the india point railroad bridge was removed even more quickly and easily than expected.

The India Point Railroad Bridge as seen in 2022, spanning the Seekonk River.

EAST PROVIDENCE – It has survived hurricanes and hardships, wayward vessels and all manner of vandals. But on Tuesday afternoon, one of the last remaining chunks of the India Point Railroad Bridge was lifted from its pilings and floated downriver.

After decades of doing little but collecting rust, the last remaining section of the bridge was removed even more quickly and easily than expected: Workers maneuvered a barge under the bridge. Workers had unfastened the bridge from the pilings so that when the tide rose, the bridge would rise with it on the barge. The barge, now with a bridge chained to it, pulled out and down the Seekonk River.

The Army Corps of Engineers-led operation was supposed to happen at 5 p.m, but by 4:45 p.m., people riding their bikes on the George Redman Linear Path toward East Providence could have glanced to the right and seen the bewildering sight of an old railroad bridge floating away like a twig down a babbling stream.

From there, it was brought to a scrap yard on Allens Avenue in Providence.

Folks, I missed the bridge being removed -- it happened at like 4:40 instead of 5 -- although I did get some video of it being floated away from George Redman Linear Park pic.twitter.com/vU4pIXyO2g — Brian Amaral (@bamaral44) April 18, 2023

Its history goes back to an earlier era of the state’s transportation system, when trains rumbled from India Point to East Providence along a bridge that’s existed in some form or another since the 1800s.

The most current version was built in the early 1900s. It was a swing bridge, meaning one part of it could open to let boats pass, or close to let trains pass.

It sat unused for decades, though, until the early 2000s, when the swing portion of the bridge, the one that connected to Providence, was removed. The rest of the bridge was left there for another day.

“They forgot about East Providence,” remarked Mayor Bob DaSilva.

That was until late last month. Council President Bob Rodericks has advocated for years to remove the bridge, saying it could open up an underused area of the waterfront in East Providence. The Army Corps of Engineers project began in late March, under a more than $1 million contract with J.F. Brennan Company, Inc. Another chunk of the bridge had already been floated down the river earlier in the project. On Tuesday, they got the rest of anything that resembled a span. Pilings are still there, but they should be gone in the coming weeks.

The India Point Railroad Bridge is on the other side of the Washington Bridge from the Crook Point Bascule Bridge, which is also disused but charismatically sticking up out of the water. The status of the preservation of that bridge is, so to speak, up in the air.

Weeds grow through the long-disused India Point Railroad Bridge in Rhode Island.

Rodericks said removing the Indian Point Railroad Bridge could be one part of a broader revitalization of the waterfront area.

“I’m thinking about the vision for our new waterfront – it’s going to be amazing,” Rodericks said as he was watching the bridge float away.

Part of the operation required the adjacent East Providence Yacht Club moving some of its pilings to make room for the machinery; it got a loan from the city to do so. But it did not require, as some had originally thought, a crane. Instead they used natural buoyancy, some chains, and a barge outfitted with big wooden blocks to do the trick. The only hard part seemed to be when the bridge first started to move; some on scene worried it might hit the yacht club, but it did not.

Mikel Perry has been going to the yacht club his whole life. Family members have owned at least part of it since it opened in 1948. In 2005, he bought out his uncle and became the owner himself. The bridge has been a big presence there, literally, the whole time.

Suddenly on Tuesday it was not. A few dozen people were on hand, many sipping Miller Lites out of koozies, to mark the occasion.

The removal of the bridge will allow Perry to reconfigure his slips, and it afforded a clearer view to the other side of the river. It even seemed like more sunlight was getting through.

Still, it will take some getting used to, Perry said.

“It looks so strange, being empty,” he said. “I don’t think it’s sunk in yet.”

Body of man who went missing at yacht club a month ago found

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The body of a man who went missing when he fell into the water at a Rhode Island yacht club about a month ago has been found, police said Tuesday.

The body of Dennis Lonardo Sr., 61, was found at about 10 a.m. at the waterfront along the East Bay bike path in East Providence, city police said in a statement.

Police responded to the scene after getting a call from a woman walking nearby.

A family member positively identified Lonardo.

Lonardo was reported missing after falling into the water at the East Providence Yacht Club on March 5. Police previously said he lived on a boat near the docks where he fell.

The cause of death remains under investigation and an autopsy is scheduled, but it is not considered suspicious, police said.
