Summary Analysis of the Design Ratios for the Westerly Conway 36

eBook: How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Sailboat

1. Her Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of the Westerly Conway 36 isn't known, but word has it she's no slouch.

2. A Ballast/Displacement Ratio of 44.4 means that the Westerly Conway 36 will stand up well to her canvas in a blow, helping her to power through the waves.

3. A Displacement/Length Ratio of 260, tells us the Westerly Conway 36 is a moderate displacement cruiser, which means she'll carry all your cruising gear without it having a dramatic effect on her performance. Most of today's sailboats intended for offshore cruising fall into this displacement category.

4. Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio of 31.5 suggests that crew comfort of a Westerly Conway 36 in a seaway is similar to what you would associate with the motion of a moderate bluewater cruising boat - a predictable and acceptable motion for most seasoned sailors.

5. The Capsize Screening Formula (CSF) of 1.8 tells us that a Westerly Conway 36 would be a safer choice of sailboat for an ocean passage than one with a CSF of more than 2.0.

More about the Westerly Conway...

The Westerly Conway 36 is a center cockpit, aft cabin monohull with a fin keel and a skeg-hung rudder. It has a sloop or ketch rig, with a deck-stepped mast and swept-back spreaders. It is a moderate displacement sailboat that is suitable for offshore cruising and island hopping and was available in two versions A and B, as shown in the sketch below.

Westerly Conway Accommodation Layout

Both versions had four or five berths in total, depending on the layout of the saloon.

Westerly went on to build several other versions on this 36' hull:

  • The Solway, like the Conway, had a centre-cockpit but with twin keels;
  • The Galway had twin keels and an aft-cockpit;
  • The Medway had a deep fin keel and an aft cockpit.
  • All were available as sloops or ketches.

Accommodation

The Westerly Conway 36 has a spacious and comfortable interior that can accommodate four or five people. The layout may vary slightly depending on the version and the owner's preferences, but here is a typical example:

  • The forward cabin has a V-berth with storage underneath and shelves on the hull sides. There is also an opening hatch for ventilation and light.
  • The forward head is located to starboard, next to the forward cabin.
  • The saloon has a L-shaped dinette to starboard that can convert into a double berth if needed. To port, there is either a single settee or another U-shaped dinette that can also convert into a double berth.
  • The galley is located at the foot of the companionway steps, either to port or starboard depending on the layout. It has a two-burner stove with oven, a sink with hot and cold water, a refrigerator or icebox, and plenty of storage space for food and utensils.
  • The navigation station is similarly located at the foot of the companionway steps on the opposite side to the galley. It has a large chart table with drawers, an instrument panel, and an electrical switchboard.
  • The aft cabin is accessed either from the cockpit or from the saloon, depending on the version. It has either two single berths or one double berth, with storage underneath and shelves on both sides. There is also an opening hatch for ventilation and light.
  • The aft head is located to starboard, next to the aft cabin. It has either an en-suite access from the aft cabin or an access from the cockpit or the saloon, depending on the version.

The interior of the Westerly Conway 36 is finished in warm and cozy Sapele wood (a type of African hardwood). The headlinings are white vinyl or fabric. The upholstery is blue or beige fabric or leatherette. The flooring is teak or carpeted plywood.

Hull and Deck The hull of the Westerly Conway 36 is made of solid fiberglass with longitudinal stringers for stiffness. The keel is a fin keel with lead ballast that provides good stability and performance. The rudder is skeg-hung for protection and control.

The deck of the Westerly Conway 36 is made of fiberglass with balsa core for strength and insulation. It has a molded non-slip surface for safety and grip. It has a raised coachroof that provides good headroom and visibility inside. It has a deck saloon with large windows that let in plenty of natural light and offer panoramic views.

The cockpit of the Westerly Conway 36 is either aft or center, depending on the version. It has either a tiller or a wheel steering, with a compass, an engine control panel, and an instrument pod.

Little Cunning Plan

A plan so cunning you could stick a tail on it and call it a weasel.

Little Cunning Plan

1977 Westerly Conway 36

On our recent trip to Vancouver , British Columbia to look at boats, we found ourselves enchanted with this little Westerly Conway 36 Center Cockpit. Having loved every Westerly we’ve ever seen, we were looking forward to seeing this boat and we were not disappointed. We were so jazzed about it that as we drove home we were talking about how we could afford to make an offer on it now, because we were worried the boat would sell fast. Here’s what this boat has to offer that we really liked, as well as why we haven’t offered anything yet.

westerly 36 sailboat

The pretty little Westerly Conway Center Cockpit

Walking fore and aft on the deck is pretty easy with the wide side decks. Of course, the center cockpit means that the deck is broken up a bit, but I like the idea of having that flat area behind the helmsman. The cockpit feels deep enough and the seats in the cockpit are a good size. It seems like a good compromise between having a cockpit you can enjoy while at anchor and having one that isn’t going to sling you around too much at sea.

westerly 36 sailboat

All the Westerlys have these sturdy latches on their lazarette lockers.

The propane locker is already located in the cockpit in its own protected area, which is great. And that lazarette is very deep. In fact, you can access the inside of the boat from this locker.

westerly 36 sailboat

Down the hatch!

What you have is basically a big storage space with engine access, which sounds really great until I started thinking about it.

One of the things I find intriguing about Westerly boats is that they all have a mast that is on a tabernacle. This is so that the mast can be lowered when you want to go underneath the low bridges so common in Europe. I love the idea of being able to sail on canals in Europe some day and while this is nothing but a big dream right now, it would sure be handy to have a mast that’s easy to drop for other things. Well, easy is a relative term, I guess. But still. It would be easier than trying to drop a keel stepped mast, or even a regular deck stepped mast.

westerly 36 sailboat

Here’s how that mast looks. The one on the Sealord is MUCH beefier.

The boat was shown to us by its owner, a nice young man who certainly knows his way around boats. He says this boat is a cinch to sail and I believe him. The rigging is pretty standard and the sails are in good condition, a plus. To sail this boat, just leave the dock and go!

But remember, we will likely live on our boat, and that’s where the rub begins. Apparently this young man is selling the boat because he and his wife had been living aboard and it was feeling too cramped for them. They’ve bought a boat a bit larger and wider and are loving every minute of it. I don’t blame them. If all I wanted to do was sail this boat around Puget Sound, Vancouver Island, or up around Vancouver  he would have been able to sell it to us right then. But now let’s look inside.

westerly 36 sailboat

Galley on the Westerly Conway

First, for a 36 foot boat, this one feels pretty roomy. Both the forward cabin and the aft cabin feel reasonably good sized, meaning I can imagine myself sleeping in either cabin. I’m hard pressed to figure out how they managed this on a 36 foot boat, but stay tuned for that. It would be so excellent to think that we could get all the things we really need in a boat only 2 feet longer than our Cal 34.

Entering the cabin, to starboard is the tiny galley. And now I begin to know how they got two reasonably sized cabins in a 36 foot boat. Here’s one of the ways. This is a huge compromise if you are going to live on this boat with more than one person. There is really no room at all in this galley, and there is precious little storage space. I started thinking about provisioning for a trip and where I would put food stores. Hmmm.

In addition, the sink, which is quite small, is nestled in that cabinet that hangs over the settee in the salon. That’s not too bad but it really makes that part of the settee unusable except if you want to put feet underneath it. I’m also concerned that I would be splashing water onto that settee constantly if the boat was in motion. Again. A thoughtful hmmmm.

The refrigerator is brand new and is the kind that looks like a dorm fridge. It’s very nice and is installed professionally, really a nice job. Unfortunately it’s also on the other side of the boat in the passageway between the salon and the aft cabin.

westerly 36 sailboat

A brand new refer!

While in port I would dearly love to have a fridge like that. No digging to the bottom to find what you need! Perfect.

Being on the other side of the boat isn’t too bad in a boat this size. Really, the only problem with this is that the passageway to the rear cabin is very low. Getting through you have to stoop down so as not to bang your head, the very first thing I did when going aft. Wham! So I now know that the bulkhead there is exactly the same height as my forehead. Lesson learned. I didn’t expect palatial passageways on a boat this size. I’d learn to live with it. Or I’d wear a helmet.

westerly 36 sailboat

A partial view of the salon.

The salon is bright and airy with good walking space and nice lighting. The settees are a comfortable size with storage space behind, underneath, and above. Because I was so enchanted with the interior of this boat, this is the best photo I have. Here’s one the owner sent me that shows what a nice little salon this is.

westerly 36 sailboat

Owner’s photo of the salon.

So now you may have guessed why this is such a roomy salon. There is no table. Just like in our Cal 34, the owners found that the table in this boat really got in their way. It made getting up and down off the settee difficult at best and they found it to be more of an irritant than useful. We know exactly what they mean. We took our table out, too.

But we replaced our table with a folding table on the bulkhead of our boat and we love it. They did not replace their table. Maybe this is because there isn’t anyplace to put one, so that’s something that we’d have to improvise. You can see there is a brand new diesel heating unit installed on the bulkhead. Heat is necessary up here, and this is pretty much the only place one could install a unit like that. But, of course, now that settee cannot be used to it’s fullest extent. Without that heating unit and the sink that hangs over the other end, this settee would be awesome. With those things, it’s simply adequate. Again, these are things that might not be important to another buyer. Always with the compromises on a boat, eh? The owners did save the table, so I imagine if someone wanted to put it back, they could do so.

Now, see, we liked this boat enough in spite of the galley arrangement and the difficulties with the salon that my imagination began to think of what we could do about these issues. We could put in another kind of heating system, opening up that settee to further use. Take out that cabinet that houses the sink and put the sink on the other side of the galley. It’s that way in some Conway layouts. Then shorten the settee a bit and add another cabinet  that goes all the way to the sole of the boat.

But I digress. That’s a lot of redesigning, even for me.

I was pleasantly surprised by the aft cabin. The berth is roomy and comfortable, and there is actually enough headroom that you don’t feel squeezed. There is plenty of light, another important thing up here. There is a small port that allows you to look into the cockpit and I found I liked that touch.

westerly 36 sailboat

Aft cabin storage

There are storage cabinets along the sides of the berth, and the owners bought baskets to afford extra storage on the shelves on either side. We should do that on Moonrise. It’s a good idea.

westerly 36 sailboat

Owner’s photo from the aft cabin.

The owner’s photo above show how much headroom you get in this aft cabin. It’s really good for a boat this size. Also in this photo you can see to the left some of the hull liner in this boat. It’s actually pretty cool. I don’t know what it’s made of but it has a short pile and looks like it would be easy to clean. It’s soft and absorbs sound, keeping the boat quieter. It also would help insulate the boat, keeping it drier in the winter. I like the fact that it is white, like the head liner. It makes the boat brighter and makes it feel bigger. As a whole, the interior of this boat is very nice and is nicely kept.

And speaking of dry, I didn’t see any evidence of leaks in this boat. Every boat has at least one, but I  didn’t find it. And my highly sensitive nose did not detect the smell of ‘wet boat’ that I so dread. That is very, very good.

See the door on the right in that photo of the aft cabin? On some Westerly Conways that door leads to an additional head. On this boat it leads to that big lazarette/engine room, and that’s a liability offshore. Suppose you were in a high sea and suffered a knockdown. Suppose that lazarette lid wasn’t latched all that well, or had vibrated loose. That’s a big wide open space and I have bad visions of cascading green water entering my boat and sinking it. It probably wouldn’t happen, but I would have to close up that space before taking off. I could see walling part of it off and putting in a big storage space. That would work.

westerly 36 sailboat

This boat has an elderly engine. The owner says it’s been well maintained, and I have no reason to doubt it. But there is some rust, and, well, it’s an old engine. Been there, done that. Still, if it was the right boat, this wouldn’t make much difference to us. And the engine access is pretty good.

Heading through the little passage again, there is a chart area or workshop area, next to that nice new fridge unit.

westerly 36 sailboat

Those used to be sea berths but they probably didn’t get used much for that anyhow. It’s good to have an area like this on a boat. Sorry about the raindrops on the lens. It’s the Pacific Northwest. We get used to it.

Just through the salon is the head. Here is where they saved space, again, for those nice cabins. You knew it had to come from somewhere, right? Let’s just say that I’m sure it’s adequate to the task but nothing more. That’s okay, really. Yes, it’s very small. But, still, how much time does a person spend in a head? Not much, at the end of the day. I would rather have that space somewhere else.

westerly 36 sailboat

Just enough room to get in and close the door.

westerly 36 sailboat

And a new looking water heater to boot!

westerly 36 sailboat

The amazingly generous v-berth.

Finally, the v berth is a generous size on a boat with all of the other amenities this one has. There is a good sized hanging locker across from the head and storage under the berth.

Overall, this is an excellent little boat and we were just this close to making an offer on it.  The owner has done quite a lot of work on this boat replacing systems, seacocks, and the like and adding equipment. It’s pretty impressive, overall, how much boat is packed into this small package.

Really, the only reason we didn’t put an offer on this boat is that we wanted to revisit the Westerly Sealord before making a decision. After seeing that boat again, we determined that it’s more in line with what we’d really like to have but the one on the market just now has some serious issues. So rather than jump the gun and then regret it, we determined to wait a bit. If this boat is still available when Moonrise is off the market, we may give it another look.

These reviews are like gold – I want to have you be my personal boat reviewer! You focus on the types of things I’m really interested in and do so in a really well written way.

Ah, I knew I was not alone in caring about these little boaty livability details! This was a really sweet boat. Never saw a Westerly we didn’t like. Glad you are finding these reviews helpful! I love looking at boats and putting the creative juices to work wondering how livable they would be. And that’s why we ended up with a 47 foot center cockpit. Looking back, it’s hard to believe we would have been serious about this boat. It is excellent, no doubt, but not big enough for us. I hope someone has found it and given it a new home and is sailing it like mad!

I wonder how much they wanted for the boat at that time? Was this a recent review?

This article was written on November 14th, 2012! We. cannot recall what they were asking for the boat at that time.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

March 26, 2024 - Baltimore Key Bridge collapses after ship collision

By Helen Regan , Kathleen Magramo , Antoinette Radford, Alisha Ebrahimji , Maureen Chowdhury , Rachel Ramirez , Elise Hammond , Aditi Sangal , Tori B. Powell , Piper Hudspeth Blackburn and Kathleen Magramo , CNN

Our live coverage of the Baltimore bridge collapse has moved here .

Crew member on DALI said everyone on board was safe hours after bridge collapse, official says

From CNN’s Amy Simonson

A crew member on the DALI cargo ship sent a message hours after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed Tuesday saying everybody on board was safe, according to Apostleship of the Sea director Andy Middleton.

Middleton, who spent time with the captain of the DALI Monday, told CNN’s Laura Coates he reached out to a crew member after hearing about the incident Tuesday morning.

He said there were 22 members aboard the ship from India who were setting sail earlier Tuesday morning and were heading toward Sri Lanka.

“I was able to reach out to a crew member very early this morning around 5:30 (a.m. ET) or 6 (a.m. ET) and get a message to them asking if they were OK,” he said. “That crew member responded within just a few minutes advising that the crew was safe, and everybody that [was] on board was safe.”

Middleton was told by the ship's captain Monday that the vessel was going to take a longer route to avoid risks along the Yemen coast.

“When I was out with the captain yesterday, we were talking while we were driving, and he advised that they were sailing down and around the tip of South Africa in order to avoid the incidents that are going on off the Yemen coast, and it was a safer way to go,” he said.

Middleton said the  Apostleship of the Sea  is a ministry to seafarers with members that spend time in the port and on the vessels as a friendly face to the seafarers that visit the Port of Baltimore, “taking care of their needs to make sure that they're reminded of their God-given human dignity when they're here in Baltimore.”

Search operation ends in "heartbreaking conclusion," Maryland governor says. Here's the latest

From CNN staff

The Dali container vessel after striking the Francis Scott Key Bridge that collapsed into the Patapsco River in Baltimore, Maryland, on Tuesday, March 26.

Six people, who were believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead after Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning. The collapse came after a 984-foot cargo ship hit the bridge's pillar.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore told reporters Tuesday evening it's a "really heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day."

Late Tuesday, it was discovered that two of the construction workers who went missing after the bridge collapsed were from Guatemala , the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said late Tuesday.

Here's what you should know to get up to speed:

  • The victims: Eight people were on the bridge  when it fell, according to officials. At least two people were rescued — one was taken to the hospital and was later  discharged , fire official and the medical center said.
  • The incident: Video shows the moment the entire bridge structure falls into the water, as the ship hits one of the bridge's pillars. CNN analysis shows that the  ships lights flickered  and it veered off course before it hit the bridge. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the crew on the ship were able to issue a "mayday" before colliding into the bridge, which allowed the authorities to stop incoming traffic from going onto the bridge.
  • Response efforts: Earlier, dive teams from various state and local agencies were brought in to assist in search-and-rescue operations, according to Maryland State Police Secretary Col. Roland L. Butler Jr.. The mission started with 50 personnel and continued to grow before the Coast Guard announced Tuesday evening that it was suspending its active search-and-rescue operation and transitioning to a "different phase."
  • The investigation: Authorities are still working to establish exactly how the crash occurred. The National Transportation Safety Board will look into  how the bridge was built  and investigate the structure itself. It will "take time to dig through" whether the bridge had ever been  flagged for any safety deficiencies , NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said.
  • Rebuilding the bridge: US Sen. Chris Van Hollen said the path to rebuilding the bridge will be "long and expensive." Senior White House adviser Tom Perez told reporters Tuesday “it’s too early” to tell how long it will take to rebuild the bridge. President Joe Biden said Tuesday he wants the federal government to bear the full cost of rebuilding the collapsed bridge, noting that it will not wait for the company who owns the container ship DALI to shoulder the costs. Funding could come from the Federal Highway Administration as well as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, but it may require additional funding from Congress.

2 of the missing construction workers from bridge collapse were from Guatemala, foreign ministry says

From CNN’s Allison Gordon, Flora Charner and Amy Simonson

Two of the construction workers missing from the bridge collapse in Baltimore were from Guatemala, the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement late Tuesday.

Those missing included a 26-year-old originally from San Luis, Petén. The other is a 35-year-old from Camotán, Chiquimula, the statement said.

The ministry said both were part of a work team “repairing the asphalt on the bridge at the time of the accident.”

The statement did not name the two people missing, but it said the country’s consul general in Maryland “went to the area where the families of those affected are located,” where he hopes to be able to meet with the brothers of both missing people.

The consulate   also issued a statement Tuesday saying its consul general in Maryland "remains in contact with local authorities," and also confirmed that two of those missing "were of Guatemalan origin.”

Six people, who were believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead after Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning when a cargo ship hit the bridge's pillar.

State and federal officials have not released information about the identities of any of the six missing workers.

Underwater mapping of bridge collapse area to begin Wednesday, Baltimore fire chief says

From CNN's Jennifer Henderson

Search operations near the Key Bridge collapse have shut down for the night due to dangerous conditions, but the process of underwater mapping with many local, state and federal dive teams will begin Wednesday, Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace told CNN’s Anderson Cooper Tuesday night.

Wallace said the portion of the Patapsco River is “tidal influenced, so it goes through tide cycles just like the open waters of the Chesapeake Bay does.”

The water depths in the area under the bridge vary from 40 feet to more than 60 feet, Wallace said. The deeper the divers go, the colder the temperatures they encounter, and the visibility is zero, he added.

Wallace said when crews arrived Tuesday morning, the surface water temperatures of the Patapsco River were about 47 degrees with an air temperature of 44-45 degrees.

Here's what you should know about the historic Francis Scott Key Bridge

The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday after a massive container ship lost power and crashed into the iconic Baltimore bridge, sending people and vehicles into the frigid Patapsco River.

Six people, believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead and the Coast Guard has ended its active search and rescue mission.

Here's what you should know about the historic bridge:

  • How old?: The Francis Scott Key Bridge, also referred to as just the Key Bridge, opened to traffic in March 1977 and is the final link in the Baltimore Beltway, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA.) It crosses over the 50-foot-deep Patapsco River, where former US attorney Francis Scott Key found inspiration to write the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner, the MDTA says.
  • How long?: The bridge was 1.6 miles long when standing, MDTA reports.
  • Traffic volume: More than 30,000 people commuted daily on the bridge, according to Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.
  • How much did it cost?: The bridge cost $60.3 million to build, MDTA says. Since its collapse, President Joe Biden said he’s committed to helping rebuild the bridge as soon as possible.
  • About the port: Baltimore ranks as the ninth biggest US port for international cargo. It handled a record 52.3 million tons, valued at $80.8 billion, in 2023. According to the Maryland state government, the port supports 15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in related services.
  • About the ship: The bridge collapsed after a container vessel called Dali collided with one of its supports. Dali is operated by Singapore-based Synergy Group but had been chartered to carry cargo by Danish shipping giant Maersk . The ship is about 984 feet long , according to MarineTraffic data. That’s the length of almost three football fields.

Baltimore woman says bridge collapse was "like a piece of family dissolved"

From CNN's Kit Maher

For longtime Baltimore resident, Ceely, who opted not to share her last name, seeing footage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse  Tuesday was deeply personal.

“I was very heavy-hearted,” Ceely told CNN. “Very tearful, thinking about the families whose loved ones may be in the water and just remembering when the bridge was constructed, and it was just like a piece of family dissolved.”

Ceely was at a prayer group Tuesday morning when she saw the news. She recalled being afraid when she first crossed the bridge while in Ford Maverick in 1975, but grew to like it because it saved time on the road.

“It was a main artery just like a blood line. It was a main artery to the other side of town. It was awesome. It beat going through the city all the time,” she said.

Elder Rashad A. Singletary , a senior pastor who led Tuesday night’s vigil at Mt. Olive Baptist Church told CNN that many church members watched the bridge's construction.

"It’s a part of the community. A lot of our individuals in our congregation drive that bridge to go to work, and so now it’s really a life changing moment,” he said.

"Heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day," Maryland governor says as Coast Guard ended search operation

From CNN's Aditi Sangal

People look out toward the Francis Scott Key Bridge following its collapse in Baltimore, Maryland on March 26.

More than 18 hours after the collapse of the Baltimore bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said it was a heartbreaking conclusion after the Coast Guard ended the search-and-rescue operation for the six people who were on the bridge when it collapsed.

It's a "really heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day," he said.

"We put every single asset possible — air, land and sea" to find the missing people, he told reporters on Tuesday evening. "While even though we're moving on now to a recovery mission, we're still fully committed to making sure that we're going to use every single asset to now bring a sense of closure to the families," the governor added.

6 people presumed dead after Baltimore bridge collapse, Coast Guard says. Here's what we know

As the sun sets in Baltimore, six people are presumed dead after a major bridge collapsed overnight Tuesday, according to the Coast Guard. The Francis Scott Key Bridge came down around 1:30 a.m. ET after a cargo ship collided with it.

The Coast Guard said it has ended its active search-and-rescue operation for the missing construction workers who were on the bridge when it collapsed.

  • What we know: Eight people were on the bridge when it fell, according to officials. At least two people were rescued — one was taken to the hospital and has been discharged . The Coast Guard has been searching for six other people. But, around 7:30 p.m. ET, the Coast Guard said it has transitioned to a “different phase” of operation, now it did “not believe we are going to find any of these individuals alive,” Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath said.
  • About the ship: The bridge collapsed after a container vessel called Dali collided with one of its supports. The vessel is operated by Singapore-based Synergy Group but had been chartered to carry cargo by Danish shipping giant Maersk . The US Embassy in Singapore has been in contact with the country’s Maritime and Port Authority, a State Department spokesperson said.
  • The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the collapse. A team of 24 experts will dig into nautical operations, vessel operations, safety history records, owners, operators, company policy and any safety management systems or programs, said NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy. A voyage data recorder will be critical to the investigation, she added.
  • Vehicles on the bridge: Officials are also working to verify the numbers of how many cars and people were on the bridge, Homendy said. Gov. Wes Moore said the quick work of authorities in closing the bridge had saved lives . Radio traffic captured how authorities stopped traffic and worked to clear the bridge seconds before the impact . Maryland State Police Secretary Col. Roland L. Butler Jr. said there is a “ distinct possibility ” more vehicles were on the bridge, but authorities have not found any evidence to support that.
  • Looking ahead: NTSB will look into how the bridge was built and investigate the structure itself, including if it was flagged for any safety deficiencies , Homendy said. The federal government has also directed its resources to help with search and rescue, to reopen the port and rebuild the bridge, Vice President Kamala Harris said . Earlier, President Joe Biden said t he federal government will pay to fix the bridge.
  • The economy: Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg warned the collapse will have a serious impact on supply chains . Until the channel is reopened, ships will likely already be changing course for other East Coast ports. Ocean carriers are already being diverted from the Port of Baltimore, where the bridge collapsed, to the Port of Virginia to “keep trade moving."
