The Kelowna Yacht Club opens The Galley Lakeside Cafe on the boardwalk downtown

Many would agree that Kelowna’s most spectacular asset is its proximity to Okanagan Lake. The magnificent grandeur of this 135-km long body of water runs alongside Kelowna’s shores from tip to tail. Watersports have long been a part of the lifestyle here as well as celebrations around it and the Kelowna Yacht Club (KYC) has been at the core of it all since 1945.

KYC is a beacon for boating enthusiasts and the majestic clubhouse is anchored lakeside downtown perfectly situated as the hub for boating Okanaganers. The gorgeous architecture of the building has become a landmark on the lake. Shaped like a ship itself, KYC has celebrated over 75 years. The history of the yacht club is woven into the very culture of Kelowna and the core values have stayed the course over the years. KYC remains steadfast as dedicated stewards of the lake as well as encouraging the use and enjoyment of the water world through events and programming. Read more about all of the programs here.

With a large and active membership in place, the KYC currently has a waiting list for those interested in joining the ranks. However, as per their community-minded values, there are many programs in place for the public to enjoy including sailing programs and camps, access to event rental space, kayak and SUP rentals along with joining their paddle programming and now a beautiful cafe on the boardwalk that is open to all.

The Galley Lakeside Cafe is set waterfront just off the boardwalk on Okanagan Lake in front of the Yacht Club. With takeaway options available — perfect for picnickers and boaters — guests can also choose one of the outdoor tables to settle into. From coffee drinks to wine and house-made salads to sandwiches, the priority is supporting local. The mouth-watering “Shipwheels” on the menu are gourmet ice-cream sandwiches made by local gelato makers QB Gelato.

The Cafe is open from 7 a.m. everyday making it a destination for morning walks and coffee fare. Wednesday to Sunday, it remains open until 9 p.m. making this one of the few places in Kelowna to sit lakeside and enjoy a glass of wine and a delicious bite.

We were taken to dinner here by members who were well-acquainted with the staff. We got excellent service and food. Very nice surroundings inside, and of course, a great view as well. I believe the restaurant is now open to non-members as well. Nice bar,... restrooms very deluxe. The one drawback is parking. Very small lot and downtown. Had to park a couple of blocks away after circling around. More

Outstanding. Must be a member, be with a member, or be from a reciprocal club. But, this place had the best service that we had experienced in a long time. Outside seating available with views of the lake. food was prepared perfectly. they took their... time to treat us like gold. best part of our trip to Kelowna More

We always enjoy our dining experience at the KYC. Food is above average for a boating club and the service is delivered with a smile and timely.

invited guests from another country for a Birthday, did not receive food after two orders. The waiters are just ignoring our table on July 21st.Upset birthday girl, and after that payment with a tip without a twinge of conscience. A shame!

The birthday celebration we attended was definitely a disappointment on many levels. From the reception we received to the general atmosphere it was lukewarm at most. Our service was fair but the quality of the food was poor. Tepid would best describe the temperature of... my meal when it was served; and after twice having returned it to be heated, I gave up when it at last arrived dried out and crusty. More

Nice venue great vibe but the chef needs to learn how to cook halibut. Most expensive thing on the menu plated well but over cooked and unacceptable

I have been to the Kelowna Yacht club a few times with a member. Each time the service and food was spot on. I will be looking into a membership as it has always been a very good experience.

When we arrived at the restaurant we were asked if we were members or “JUST the public”. I get it that it is a members only establishment and only on the day of the boat show we are allowed in but it sounded really rude.... We were checking it out because we wanted to be members as we saw that they now had boat slips available which was surprising but a great opportunity! The lady who took us to our table was very pleasant! We waited 10 minutes for a server to come by. He was good but the service was very slow. After lunch we waited 15 minutes for our bill (literally, I'm not exaggerating-I kept watching the time because our parking meter was going to run out). When the bill arrived a lady brought it and said “I’m sorry, I didn’t even know that you were my table”. We paid cash and when she came back with the change, she just stood there staring at me and wouldn’t leave the table. I put down the tip, really uncomfortably, and she took it immediately and stuck it in her pocket and then told me she hoped that I bought a new boat and walked away. I told our server that she has his tip but he said that it was fine because she was our server and he was the manager. So I basically just gave her a handout!? The fries were awesome, the Caesar salad was really good but the chicken sandwich was horrible. We will not be members here and we will never come back. More

We went for brunch and it was an amazing meal. The food was excellent and service was near perfect. The atmosphere and view are very relaxed.

This is by far the best view from any restaurant in Kelowna. Foods is always excellent especially on their pasta night. You get to pick your pasta and what toppings you want and they mix it up for you while you watch. Unfortunately members only... we have been fortunate to be guests a couple of times. More

The club has had growing pains this is not a typical restaurant it is a private club. For those who are not members it is a unique experience. Yes the food has been known to be slow arriving but the view and charm of the... servers is second to none. The food and drink prices are among the best in Kelowna. If you find the Golden Arches your cup tea then a private club is not for you. We have been members for over 24 Years and accept the bumps in a new dining experience. R&G More

We stopped in with some friends who are members. Membership required to get in. The food is just ok here. We've had the fish and chips (oily), and a burger (frozen patty). They've got a nice 2nd floor patio over the lake, and always have... good selection of beer on tap, and a good wine list. The staff is uninspired. More

As a long time member of the yacht club, I typically only go here to have a couple of drinks. The food has always been substandard. Not eve close to the quality of the food served downstairs at The Cactus Club.

This was an evening to celebrate so as a family we went for dinner at the Kelowna Yacht Club. The location is superb, the views are outstanding but the food was poor. Our parents are elderly and chose the fish and chips which was mostly... batter. For a property such as this, the food coming out of there kitchen should be superb and if I were a member, I would want more for myself and the guests that I was bringing. More

Atmosphere, service were very good. We were there on a Sunday eve with local friends who were expecting better as were we. It was prime rib Sunday. Popovers, mashed potatoes, veggies, salad and a mediocre rib roast. It was not bad food, but we would... order off the menu next time. The setting was the best. More

Waterfront Dining Options Expand in Downtown Kelowna

Diners looking for Kelowna waterfront restaurants will have a new choice when the Cactus Club Cafe opens on the first floor of the new Kelowna Yacht Club building on Water Street.

“We are building the premiere development on Kelowna’s waterfront and were determined to attract an operator for the public restaurant that would equal this unique location,” says Commodore Mike Terris. “We are delighted that Cactus Club Cafe has decided to join us next to Stuart Park on the waterfront. They are a terrific addition to our vibrant downtown.”

The Kelowna Yacht Club’s new 24,100 sq. ft. building, just north of their current clubhouse, consists of two floors. The southern half of the first floor is intended for a public restaurant and that is the space which Cactus Club will occupy.

“This is an ideal location for the Cactus Club Cafe,” says Terris. “The building fronts Water Street on the east, the new Stuart Park on the south and the new waterfront promenade currently under construction along the lake.”

Patrons will be able to sit on the restaurant’s patio and enjoy fine lakeside dining, while taking in the views of the park and Lake Okanagan.

The top floor of the Yacht Club features huge covered decks with fabulous views of the lake and will house the members’ restaurant and lounge and a large public banquet facility.

Cactus Club Cafe began as a small restaurant in North Vancouver and has quickly grown into 25 restaurants across British Columbia and Alberta. The menu, designed by Executive Chef Rob Feenie, focuses on the freshest sustainable and local ingredients, including Ocean Wise sustainable seafood.

Rich in history and embracing the future, Kelowna Yacht Club is a boating community dedicated to providing educational, social and recreational opportunities to their members and to the general public. We were taken to dinner here by members who were well-acquainted with the staff. We got excellent service and food. Very nice surroundings inside, and of course, a great view as well. I believe the restaurant is now open to non-members as well. Nice bar,... restrooms very deluxe. The one drawback is parking. Very small lot and downtown. Had to park a couple of blocks away after circling around. More

Outstanding. Must be a member, be with a member, or be from a reciprocal club. But, this place had the best service that we had experienced in a long time. Outside seating available with views of the lake. food was prepared perfectly. they took their... time to treat us like gold. best part of our trip to Kelowna More

We always enjoy our dining experience at the KYC. Food is above average for a boating club and the service is delivered with a smile and timely.

invited guests from another country for a Birthday, did not receive food after two orders. The waiters are just ignoring our table on July 21st.Upset birthday girl, and after that payment with a tip without a twinge of conscience. A shame!

The birthday celebration we attended was definitely a disappointment on many levels. From the reception we received to the general atmosphere it was lukewarm at most. Our service was fair but the quality of the food was poor. Tepid would best describe the temperature of... my meal when it was served; and after twice having returned it to be heated, I gave up when it at last arrived dried out and crusty. More

I have been to the Kelowna Yacht club a few times with a member. Each time the service and food was spot on. I will be looking into a membership as it has always been a very good experience.

When we arrived at the restaurant we were asked if we were members or “JUST the public”. I get it that it is a members only establishment and only on the day of the boat show we are allowed in but it sounded really rude.... We were checking it out because we wanted to be members as we saw that they now had boat slips available which was surprising but a great opportunity! The lady who took us to our table was very pleasant! We waited 10 minutes for a server to come by. He was good but the service was very slow. After lunch we waited 15 minutes for our bill (literally, I'm not exaggerating-I kept watching the time because our parking meter was going to run out). When the bill arrived a lady brought it and said “I’m sorry, I didn’t even know that you were my table”. We paid cash and when she came back with the change, she just stood there staring at me and wouldn’t leave the table. I put down the tip, really uncomfortably, and she took it immediately and stuck it in her pocket and then told me she hoped that I bought a new boat and walked away. I told our server that she has his tip but he said that it was fine because she was our server and he was the manager. So I basically just gave her a handout!? The fries were awesome, the Caesar salad was really good but the chicken sandwich was horrible. We will not be members here and we will never come back. More

We went for brunch and it was an amazing meal. The food was excellent and service was near perfect. The atmosphere and view are very relaxed.

This is by far the best view from any restaurant in Kelowna. Foods is always excellent especially on their pasta night. You get to pick your pasta and what toppings you want and they mix it up for you while you watch. Unfortunately members only... we have been fortunate to be guests a couple of times. More

The club has had growing pains this is not a typical restaurant it is a private club. For those who are not members it is a unique experience. Yes the food has been known to be slow arriving but the view and charm of the... servers is second to none. The food and drink prices are among the best in Kelowna. If you find the Golden Arches your cup tea then a private club is not for you. We have been members for over 24 Years and accept the bumps in a new dining experience. R&G More

We stopped in with some friends who are members. Membership required to get in. The food is just ok here. We've had the fish and chips (oily), and a burger (frozen patty). They've got a nice 2nd floor patio over the lake, and always have... good selection of beer on tap, and a good wine list. The staff is uninspired. More

As a long time member of the yacht club, I typically only go here to have a couple of drinks. The food has always been substandard. Not eve close to the quality of the food served downstairs at The Cactus Club.

This was an evening to celebrate so as a family we went for dinner at the Kelowna Yacht Club. The location is superb, the views are outstanding but the food was poor. Our parents are elderly and chose the fish and chips which was mostly... batter. For a property such as this, the food coming out of there kitchen should be superb and if I were a member, I would want more for myself and the guests that I was bringing. More

Atmosphere, service were very good. We were there on a Sunday eve with local friends who were expecting better as were we. It was prime rib Sunday. Popovers, mashed potatoes, veggies, salad and a mediocre rib roast. It was not bad food, but we would... order off the menu next time. The setting was the best. More
