• A turn-key liveaboard cruising boat ready to go. Much loved and meticulously cared for, but now we must move on to new land-based adventures (a baby!). Here are some of the headline upgrades made to the boat before we bought her. > New rigging in 2021.> Engine refurb in 2020/ 2021. Fuel pump, injectors, new starter motor, gearbox.> New sole boards (flooring) throughout, in 2020/ 2021.We bought her in early 2022 and carried out an extensive re-fit:> Installed 600 Amp hours of Renogy LiFEPO4 lithium batteries, this is complete with a Victron Multiplus II, which can charge the batteries at 120 Amps per hour off of shore power, and it also creates 240V electricity from the batteries via the inverter, up to 3,000W of power. All of this is managed through a Victron Cerbo GX and touchscreen at the nav table showing you the state of charge, and current power draw/ generation. > This means you have a constant source of 240V electricity onboard, which provides a few creature comforts. We have electric-only cooking onboard, no gas. There is a two burner induction hob and two-drawer Ninja air fryer as the oven. The 240V inverter can also help provide hot water via the 30-litre calorifier (new in 2022), also plumbed into the engine coolant loop. > The batteries charge off of the shorepower connection, via the 875w of solar panels (Victron MPPT controllers), or via the engine (Victron DC/DC charger at 30 amps).> The boat was entirely re-plumbed with JG push-fit plastic pipe throughout in 2022. An expansion tank was added, and a new Whale Pump W-UF1215 was installed. > We commissioned a stainless steel stern arch to be built, and integrated into the existing pushpit. This arch acts as the mount for 525w (3 panels) of the 175w solar panels, with a further 2 of the 175w panels mounted on the guard rails, to bring us to 875w total. The stainless steel arch also acts as a dinghy hoist with a whole D-frame lowering/ raising. > We re-decorated throughout, painting a lot of the walls white, but leaving the original trim pieces round doorframes, etc in their varnished state. > A whole new navigation panel was installed at the nav table. New switchboards, every wire fused. As part of the re-build a new Garmin GPS1022 chartplotter was installed along with Vesper XB-6000 AIS transponder. > We have also painted the decks with KiwiGrip. A previous owner had previously sprayed the deck/ hull over the original gelcoat. This left some parts of the deck quite slippy. Hence we painted the decks with KiwiGrip, which stopped our dog and us from slipping!> The boat will be sold with a 3D tender, 2.5 metre long, 1.5 metre wide with a Mercury 6 horsepower outboard. Included in the price. > Included in the price is also a host of spares. Spares list include shaft anode, exhaust gasket, alternator belts, water filters, engine impellers, outboard fuel tank connectors, oil filters, ignition start switch, diesel engine thermostat, primary fuel filters, secondary fuel filters, top end gasket kit, prop lock washer, hatch gaskets, hatch handles, bilge pumps, windlass switches. Specification is important as in the UK you might want to consider buying a second-hand yacht with heating already fitted and air conditioning for those wishing to go somewhere warm. However, these both of these can be easily retrofitted after the sale so don’t exclude an option just because it doesn’t have your exact specification already fitted.

After several months of looking and two failed surveys, I have just completed the purchase of my first boat, a Jeanneau Merry Fisher 795. As a newcomer to boating I have to admit my first impression of boat brokers was pretty poor (compared to other industries I deal with) - descriptions were definitely on the optimistic side, boats were untidy, dirty and generally poorly presented. No excuses, just very poor sales and I would be careful who to list my boat with in the future. Then I came across Ancasta (Leo Walters) who shone bright like a beacon. The description of the boat was accurate, minor faults highlighted and extra pictures provided on request. Communications with Ancasta have been excellent, the boat was very well presented for inspection and after sales Ancasta remained interested to ensure my experience was positive. I wouldn't hesitate going to Ancasta for another purchase and if you are thinking of selling a boat, consider using Ancasta, you will get better service and value for money than many other brokers out there. Alia Yachts launches all-aluminium 45m superyacht Project SAN

Turkish shipyard Alia Yachts has launched Project SAN, a 45-metre custom superyacht built entirely in aluminium. Design comes courtesy of Dutch studio Sinot with naval architecture from Lateral Naval Architects .

The layout of Project SAN places increased focus on al fresco living, with a "fully open main deck all the way from the stern to the bow, without any major visual obstacles," according to Paul Costerus, partner and lead designer at Sinot.

"The design of SAN began after long and in-depth conversations with her future owner on the desired layouts, functionality and style," continued Costerus.

Her exterior is characterised by a low, predatory superstructure with a raised pilothouse and sharp, clean lines. Initial images also show off her plumb bow and uncluttered deck space.

"The exterior deck furniture is multi-functional," said Costerus. "Tables convert from dining to an evening cocktail setup and sunbathing areas convert easily into intimate seating. The aft deck sunbathing area can be expanded by folding the bulwarks down, providing even more of an outdoor living space experience."

While imagery is unreleased, interiors are minimalist and detail-orientated, with full-height windows ensuring the yacht’s surroundings remain a key focal point.

Accommodation is found on the lower deck, with a four-cabin layout that includes a generous owner’s cabin.

Alia Yachts President Gökhan Çelik said: "Based on an innovative and attractive design philosophy, Project SAN will further strengthen our pursuit to be recognized as one of the top custom yacht builders in the world by delivering such superior projects recognised worldwide."

This follows the shipyard's recent partnership with Burgess on a custom 45-metre superyacht. The project will bring together H2 Yacht Design , Vickers Studio and Van Oossanen , with delivery scheduled for 2026.

Latest statement in response to small boat crossings

A Home Office spokesperson said:

“The unacceptable number of people who continue to cross the Channel demonstrates exactly why we must get flights to Rwanda off the ground as soon as possible.

“We continue to work closely with French police who are facing increasing violence and disruption on their beaches as they work tirelessly to prevent these dangerous, illegal and unnecessary journeys.

“We remain committed to building on the successes that saw arrivals drop by more than a third last year, including tougher legislation and agreements with international partners, in order to save lives and stop the boats.”

Background:

• Weather conditions for crossings recorded over the course of 2023 were similar to conditions in 2022, with only four fewer days likely for crossings recorded in 2023 compared to the previous year.
• We will do whatever is necessary to end these perilous and fatal journeys, encouraging people to seek safe and legal passage. Since 2015, over 550,000 people have done so.
• The decrease in crossing numbers is testament to the tough measures we have introduced, the hard work of our dedicated Border Force officers and our work with French counterparts.
• Illegal migration is an international challenge we are tackling on all fronts – including working upstream with international partners, clamping down on the criminal gangs with stepped-up enforcement, and working with the French to prevent more crossings.
• We have taken immediate action to speed up asylum processing whilst maintaining the integrity of the system. This includes simplifying guidance and streamlining processes. We have also introduced shorter, focussed interviews, making the interview process more efficient.
• package of measures agreed with France which will see the deployment of more than double the number of French personnel and enhanced technology to patrol beaches.
• a strengthened partnership with Turkey which includes UK and Turkish law enforcement officers stepping up joint operations to tackle Organised Immigration Crime and disrupt the supply chain of boat parts and other materials used as part of illegal migration journeys.
• a new partnership between social media companies and government to tackle people smuggling content online. Backed by a new Online Capability Centre, it will undermine and disrupt organised crime groups using the internet to facilitate these journeys.

Iconic 'little blue boat' that calls Montrose Bay home up for sale after family makes tough decision

For almost 50 years a little blue boat has been moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs by the side of a busy highway.

It is known affectionately by many Tasmanians as "the little blue boat", and has floated alone next to the Brooker Highway at Montrose Bay over the decades.

Sea Breeze, its official name, was built by Robin Attrill in his Montrose backyard in the early 1970s.

His son Colin Attrill said the boat was launched at Macquarie Wharf in 1976.

"It's been on the mooring in Montrose Bay ever since, and that's why it's such an iconic little blue boat," he said.

Tasmanians curious about 'little blue boat'

The boat is an object of fascination for Brooker Highway motorists and foreshore walkers due to it seemingly never moving.

Colin Attrill said it was "absolutely amazing" the number of people who would stop and talk to him about the boat when he was launching the dinghy to go and check on it.

"The number of people that talk to me that are walking past and go 'that boat has been there forever' and 'it was there when I was going to school or every day when I've been driving to work'," he said.

"Some people say they've never seen it move. Well it used to move all the time.

"Of late it's slowed up, we're all busy and dad has slowed up. We lost mum and once that happened it impacted on family activities."

Tough decision to sell

Its owner is now 91 and the boat has not been sailed for about 10 years.

Colin Attrill said the family had recently made the tough decision to try to sell the boat.

"Dad isn't well and he's gotten old, which we all do, and the boat's got old," he said.

"Anyone who knows about a timber boat knows that they need maintenance."

Mr Attrill said the family used to put the boat on the slip at least once a year to clean and antifoul it, and do any repairs.

"But the past few years Dad has been unable to do anything, and the boat unfortunately has just sat on the mooring," he said.

He said the family decided it was time for the boat to have a new owner.

"Nobody is using it, it needs a new owner who will give it the time and get the enjoyment out of it that we had growing up," he said.

"It's a great boat, and there are many years left. Wooden boats just last."

'Next phase' for the boat

The Attrill family is full of passionate sailors and Robin's brother Peter represented Australia in sailing at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 — Tasmania's fifth Olympian and the first to represent the state in sailing.

When Robin finished building the 25-foot river cruiser, known by the family as The Breeze, it was used for trips away around Hobart.

"We used to have family trips down the channel, down to Cygnet, down to Dover, and all places in between fishing and weekends away," he said.

"We also used to go to events in Hobart like the Hobart Regatta, the Sandy Bay Regatta. We'd be down the river at any chance, or up the river. She made it to New Norfolk a couple of times.

"The boat was all over the place, wherever we could."

Mr Attrill said it would be a sad day when the boat left Montrose Bay after almost 50 years.

"We will see where it goes and where it ends up and what's the next phase for the boat," he said.

Over the years its owner has been keeping a watchful eye on it just a matter of metres away, across the Brooker Highway from his Montrose home of more than 70 years.

"He's always been there. He'd open the blinds in the morning in the kitchen and look out the window and there's the boat," son Colin said.

"It's always been a part of his life."

Crews announced for The Boat Race 2024

The Cambridge and Oxford crews for The Boat Race 2024 have been officially unveiled at a crew announcement held at the iconic Battersea Power Station.

The 36 student rowers who have won a place in the Blue Boat were announced at the event which was held in public for the first time in the Boat Races’ history.

The crews for the Women’s Race were unveiled first of all, and the Cambridge crew will feature two returning faces, Jenna Armstrong and Carina Graf, but for the others it is their first time in the coveted Blue Boat.

The crews for the Men’s Race were then unveiled, and this year there are five returning Blues: Seb Benzecry, Noam Mouelle, Tom Lynch, Luca Ferraro and Matt Edge.

Asked by the host of the event, BBC Sport commentator Andrew Cotter, about whether there was a challenge integrating new faces into the Blue Boat, Cambridge Women’s Coach Patrick Ryan said: “Actually there are no new faces, every single one of them is a returner – just new Blues!”

The Cambridge Men’s and Women’s clubs unified in 2020 and Patrick added: “As we’ve become one club, we’ve learned to share more information and work together, hopefully for the betterment of the athletes here tonight.”

Cambridge Men’s Coach Rob Baker was then asked whether the number of returning Blues in the Men’s Boat would give Cambridge an advantage.

“Every year is different, every year is a challenge,” said Rob. “It’s great to have guys that have won the race and been through the process before, but yes it’s always a big challenge but we are up for it”.

It was the first time that Battersea Power Station, which famously featured on a Pink Floyd album cover, has hosted the crew announcement event. Siobhan Cassidy, Chair of the Boat Race Company Limited, said the venue was appropriate, given that it was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who was also behind iconic buildings at Cambridge and Oxford, including Cambridge University Library.

She added: “[The Boat Race] is the ultimate British tradition, which draws on its heritage yet, with boats full of young students, it is very much an event that looks to the future.

“These young people have a unique opportunity to take to the water on such a high profile day. In order to get there they have made incredible choices. They have combined a full-time rigorous academic schedule with training and racing throughout the year - so let’s not underestimate how impressive these young people really are”.

The Gemini Boat Race 2024 takes place in Putney, London, on Saturday 30 March  – with the Women’s Race starting at 14:46 BST and the Men’s Race at 15:46 BST – renewing an intense rivalry which stretches back nearly 200 years. The event will be broadcast live on BBC One from 14:00 BST.

Last year saw Cambridge University win both the men’s and women’s races, leaving the overall records as 86-81 in the favour of Cambridge Men’s and 47-30 in the favour of Cambridge Women’s.
