ALBUM REVIEW: The Space – Somali Yacht Club

With an unusual band name that demonstrates and represents dichotomy and variance, SOMALI YACHT CLUB got their name from the real-life pirates who attack vessels off the Somalian coast and the peaceful leisure of those with time to kill and money to burn. With this stark contrast in mind, the Ukrainian trio’s music occupies the space between post-rock and metal. Dynamic shifts between loud and quiet moments within a boundless, wide open sound, there is a lot to be admired and immersed in. Over the last decade the band have drawn on a plethora of influences, honed their skills and offered up a fresh spin on the psychedelic doom genre. As a result The Space sees them soar with outstretched wings, traversing the melancholic and introspective skies.

As the world’s struggles and turmoils persist to cause stress, angst and anxiety, The Space announces itself as the perfect elixir. The album stretches its arms around you in a warm and welcoming embrace, calming your overloaded nerves and giving your soul the time to transcend beyond your physical being. SOMALI YACHT CLUB have worked in the old school manner of jamming out riffs together and building a song from there; the approach for The Space was no different and as a result you’re presented with an album that flows freer than the waters of the Dnieper river. The entrancing and hypnotic nature of the album is in the sweet spot between metaphysical experience and acute observation, lyrically looking into the human psyche as well as the impact modern existence has on our delicate emotions and fragile behaviours.

There is a strong emotional resonance throughout The Space ; when an album can offer this kind of escapism and refuge from everyday life it truly is a special experience. The Space also sees SOMALI YACHT CLUB build significantly on their sound, bringing forth only the best parts of 2016’s The Sun and 2018’s The Sea  and meshing them together to create a newly evolved sound that feels like the most honest representation of the band to date. Whilst still mainly instrumentally focused, the band’s lyrics explore themes we can all relate to, and how we internalise our emotions instead of letting them free.

Opening up The Space with the monolithic riffs of Silver , SOMALI YACHT CLUB set the album’s tone with an introspectively explorative track as it ventures through pastures unknown mentally and physically. Pulsar lyrically discusses the very human topic of taking a pure and true love for granted and eventually losing it, thrusting you into a state of never-ending melancholy. Despite this there is a surprisingly uplifting quality to the song due to the music behind the lyrics, but it also demonstrates the acknowledgement that you were wrong and have to live with it. There is a vindication in that sort of acceptance.

Echo Of Direction  is easily the most spiritual song on The Space , with the heavy, psychedelic riffs being augmented by cathedral choir style layers of vocals and harmonies. Whilst it deals with the hopelessness of the loss of direction that we all feel from time to time, you can feel yourself physically resonating with how ethereally haunting the song is.

Gold utilises some intriguing and musical melodies to captivate the listener, but it also feels like it demonstrates the subject of the lyrics, about how we internalise our emotions and end up feeling like a confused and crazy mess inside due to fear. Closing the album with the twelve-minute epic Momentum , SOMALI YACHT CLUB allow themselves to be unencumbered by time, exploring multiple new avenues whilst consolidating the album’s introspective vibes into one enchanting song. The song speaks of ushering in a new phase, as a person we walk through these chapter beginnings unknowingly, but Momentum speaks about the choices we have to make consciously to be able to usher in a new and meaningful chapter.

SOMALI YACHT CLUB have captured something beautiful in a world full of chaos with The Space , utilising their unique take on psychedelic rock and evolving it to transcend genre boundaries. It would be a safe bet that when people listen to this album in 50 years time, they will experience the same emotional resonance as we do today.

Rating: 9/10

Somali Yacht Club – “The Space”

Somali yacht club did it again: the space  smothers you in a beautiful, yet melancholic atmosphere that you won’t want to emerge from..

Release date: April 22, 2022 | Season Of Mist | Bandcamp | Facebook | Donate to Ukraine

Somali Yacht Club have come leaps and bounds since their debut record back in 2011 – Sandsongs. The jam band have since turned psychedelic doomgaze, and with the release of  The Space , they have cemented themselves as industry leaders. The record is packed from start to finish with exceptional tracks, sporting beautiful motifs and lyrics through all six tracks, complemented at all times by one of the best mixes I’ve heard all year. Often I find myself cranking the volume up to max to completely bask in the fuzz, the atmosphere not only welcoming but delightful on the ears.

Before we dive into the meat of the album, let’s pay some due to the band, who are currently watching their hometown of Lviv be destroyed by Putin and his indoctrinated savages. The Ukrainian trio that makes up Somali Yacht Club  are all safe but have requested any assistance possible to help stop the war and to support people affected by the numerous tragedies inflicted by the aggressors. A link for donations is available at the top of the page, and Somali Yacht Club  are also waving any profits from their merch, with the link also at the top of the article. Let’s hope the boys and their families make it out of this illegal invasion safely.

A war couldn’t stop them from releasing their new album, though, which will drop on April 22 through Season Of Mist . If I’d managed to create something this good, I’d make sure the world heard it as soon as possible too. The album opens with “Silver”, and Somali Yacht Club  waste no time in introducing you to their updated sound, with monstrous riffs brought in immediately. Compared the The Sea , they have added a lot more depth to their fuzz and overall atmosphere to their doom. That isn’t to detract from their previous records, mind you; both The Sun and The Sea are exceptional, and are tuned brilliantly for what was being portrayed. They seemed to have played off the name of their album and elevated all aspects of their music, creating more space for the instruments to breathe and more scope for the listener to enjoy.

Of course, the fuzzy doom metal isn’t the complete Somali Yacht Club package. Contrasting with the monster riffs are the psychedelic keys and guitar licks played by frontman Thor, not to mention his melancholic, yet almost hopeful vocals. His voice is already instantly recognisable in a sea of doom and post- bands, and yet again he has managed to embed catchy vocal hooks that will have you singing along with him by the second listen. The keys used in the record are subtle but manage to appear at special moments that amplify the riffs, keeping those moments stuck in your head for the next two days.

“Pulsar”, the second track on the album, really shows off the bands prowess at writing damn cool songs. The intro alone teases multiple different potential avenues for the track to go, each time lurching in a different direction to what you expected before coming full circle again in under half a minute. You can’t tell if it’s going to be stoner-rock, laid back psych-rock, or rip-snorting doom. Time and again, the band jump from monster riffs to hazy jams, colliding when necessary to keep the energy of the song up. This is the track you’ll really be blown away by the mix too. Considering there are only three of them, the staggering soundstage they create alone is stunning, but the way the instruments are delicately placed in the mix deserves all of our praise.

Three of the tracks push over the nine-minute mark, whilst the others are relatively short and sweet in comparison. Yet the quality is ever-present, and the song progressions are well worth hanging around for the longer tracks. Packed with clever reprises and, of course, the metalhead’s favourite, the final epic riffing, the band just have it on lock and know exactly how to engage their audience for these longer tracks.

For the uneducated, the tracks might feel samey, but for a connoisseur of the finest doom,  The Space  absolutely fucking slaps, with deep variances present throughout the tracks, as they dabble with gaze and more post-metal elements. Somali Yacht Club  have added yet another monster record to their quiver, and I wish the guys and their family all the best as they navigate the terrifying conflict in Ukraine. Please remember to donate when you can, and continue to push back against Kremlin propaganda, supporting humans first over your ideals.

Album Review: Somali Yacht Club – The Sea

  • February 26, 2018

Somali Yacht Club already made major waves with their first release,  The Sun.  Now they are back with The Sea , an even stronger recording that completely managed to avoid the sophomore slump.

For those familiar with the band, this relies on a lot of the same tropes: heavy, repetitive drumming, fuzzed-out vocals, and stony riffs. But it is even more nuanced and particular, in that it focuses specifically on soundscapes and crafting good songwriting.

“Blood Leaves a Trail” is by far the stand-out track; it has almost a Conan-like ferocity to it, despite still being laid-back and incredibly docile. “84 Days” is another good one, with serious focus on the rhythm and repetition, almost to the point of trance.

Give this a listen if you loved the first record, or if you are a stoner doom fan. I personally discovered this band via Spotify stumbling, and had to do a double-take. Check out a few tracks and you will see what I mean. There are plenty of groups that try and emulate this sound and fall a little flat, or sound like knock-offs, and Somali Yacht Club definitely have their own, unique thing going on.

SOMALI YACHT CLUB  is a moniker designed to represent dichotomy and variance. Named after the real-life pirates who attack vessels off the Somalian coast and the peaceful leisure of those with time to kill and money to burn,  SOMALI YACHT CLUB  musically embodies the boundless, wide-open, quiet/loud spaces that atmospheric post-rock and metal occupy. After over a decade of mesmerizing audiences in their Ukrainian home base and Eastern Europe,  SOMALI YACHT CLUB  inked a deal with Season of Mist in 2021 to reissue their back catalogue and release their third full-length,  The Space .

The band’s story began in 2010 when guitarist/vocalist Ihor sent drummer Lesyk a random message on a Ukrainian musician’s forum to play a hybrid of math rock, post-hardcore, stoner and post-metal. Intrigued, Lesyk called bassist Artur to create the band’s first (and only) lineup. The initial jam sessions went so well that the trio decided to move forward on a permanent basis. Relying on albums such as Moccasin’s  The Last Leaf , Ahkmed’s early EPs, Mars Red Sky’s self-titled, the entire Sungrazer discography and the legendary Isis duo of  Oceanic  and  Panopticon , as well as Down, Electric Wizard, Queens of the Stone Age and now-labelmates Weedeater, the  SOMALI YACHT CLUB  sound was formulated.

“It was a very naive and simple time,” comments the band. “Ihor, as always, was full of energy and it was not enough for him for the bands in which he played at the time. We just started to jam and found the blend that fits all of us. Also, we always loved bands and particular songs that are eclectic — we get a lot of inspiration from such things. They are fun to play and hopefully fun to listen to.” However broad and varied their influences may be,  SOMALI YACHT CLUB  started to forge their own path via their self-released 2011  Sandsongs  and 2013  Desert Walls  EP. The pair laid the groundwork for their formidable full-length debut,  The Sun , which channeled spaced-out, psychedelic jams with churning stoner doom metal. Their amalgamation of all-things stoner continued through the 2015  Sun’s Eyes  EP and 2018  The Sea  full-length, the latter noted by  The Sludgelord  that it “succeeds in taking the listener on that well-known ride of warm tones and meandering melodies” and  MetalStorm.net  stating, “ SOMALI YACHT CLUB  offers up a fresh spin on a rich but well-explored genre and in doing so deliver one of the early highlights of 2018.”

The new year brings forth  The Space . The album was tracked at various points throughout 2021 at Jenny Records near Lviv, Ukraine, with mixing and mastering courtesy of Yaroslav Tseluiko at Jaro Sound in the Czech Republic. The cover depicts a supernova and was handled by Dasha Pliska, who was also responsible for  The Sun  and  The Sea  artwork.  The Space  also completes the trilogy that began with  The Sun  and  The Sea , but, according to the band, there is no unifying theme.

“It’s a bit hard to tell a real story in our music because, let’s be honest — it’s still more instrumental-focused.  The Space  is very loosely connected to a single concept as it has even more abstract and personal lyrical themes. Also, the song ‘Pulsar’ was the first written and named song for this album, so it set a path for the title.”   The Space  finds  SOMALI YACHT CLUB  now in full expanse of their sonic elements, delivering six cuts of atmospheric post-rock/metal with dashes of melancholy and introspection. Ihor’s relaxed, if not smooth delivery runs parallel to his driving, fuzzed-out riffs that are dotted with traces of melody. The rhythm section of Artur and Lesyk is the undisputed anchor, maintaining a careful ebb and flow that embellishes songs that demand room to breathe and require texture and thoughtfulness — notably the 12-minute-plus closer, “Momentum,” which features one of the band’s finest jams to date. Such numbers resulted from  SOMALI YACHT CLUB ’s regular practice sessions that bore more than enough new material.

“We wrote  The Space  pretty much the same way as the previous two,” says the band. “We brought an idea or a riff to rehearsal, play and jam it a lot of times to see if it doesn’t go stale, record demos, listen, think, re-think, change everything and so on. This time we went to the studio with more than enough material — some even didn’t get a proper recording as we understood it needed even more time to mature and be reconsidered. Some ideas became an outtake; some songs were created right in the studio.”

Like their name serving a dual purpose, so does  SOMALI YACHT CLUB ’s output on  The Space . The album contains a regular balancing act between heaviness and soft, clean guitar moments that will place  SOMALI YACHT CLUB  into the echelons of bands who have previously mastered the timeless art of dynamics.  The Space  is the perfect elixir in a time rife with uncertainty, menace and chaos. Alas, the new age of stoner has arrived.

  8. ALBUM REVIEW: The Space

The Space also sees SOMALI YACHT CLUB build significantly on their sound, bringing forth only the best parts of 2016's The Sun and 2018's The Sea and meshing them together to create a newly evolved sound that feels like the most honest representation of the band to date. 12. Album Review: Somali Yacht Club

Somali Yacht Club - The Sea (full album 2018) Watch on. "Blood Leaves a Trail" is by far the stand-out track; it has almost a Conan-like ferocity to it, despite still being laid-back and incredibly docile.
