VIDEO: A Small Boat Trip to the Bahamas
Being able to run a small boat to the Bahamas is one of the greatest boat adventures one could ever make. I have been lucky enough to be able to do this a few times and while this last trip was a short one, it still burned memories into our minds.
Weather always plays a big part into these trips and we were lucky to have great weather; calm seas, clear skies and a perfect temperature. We hope you enjoy this short video and use it to make your own plans to run your boat to the islands. If you find yourself at Staniel Cay, make sure to feed the pigs nicely as they have been known to take more than food from your hands.

Safe Powerboat Handling
Course description.
This 16-hour hands-on, on-the-water course is for anyone who wants to learn how to safely operate a small motorboat and improve their boathandling skills. No previous experience is required! The US Coast Guard and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved this course and an increasing number of states have recognized it as meeting their requirements for a State Boating Education Certificate. This course combines classroom instruction with practical, hands-on experience for both the new boater and seasoned boater alike.
These national and state approvals call for the course to include a total of six to eight hours of classroom sessions covering required education topics.
US Sailing Membership is not required to participate in a Safe Powerboat Handling course
- Single Engine Course – $1,095 per person plus fuel
- Twin Engine Course – $1,295 per person plus fuel
- Private class available upon request and availability

Whether you are a first-timer behind the helm or you’re looking for a more advanced course, the Los Angeles Powerboat Academy in Marina del Rey offers an abundance of courses for students at all levels. As Los Angeles’ leading Powerboat Academy, our experienced captains and tailored programs aim to empower students with the skills and assurance they require to become confident behind the helm.

Basic Cruising Powerboat Course
This is a 12-hour program with four 3-hour “on the water” course modules.

Certification Means Something
Los Angeles Powerboat Academy is one of the few companies providing powerboat certification on the West Coast. The truth is, powerboating has little regulation, so if you want to learn, there’s no shortage of “guys that have driven a boat” that fancy themselves as instructors. And some of them are probably good, too. But if you want a certified instructor that uses the National validated skill-based standards for powerboats, you want Los Angeles Powerboat Academy teaching you (especially if you want National Certification yourself). There is simply no substitute for proven experience with US Powerboating, and that means being a true National Certified Powerboat Instructor.

Where it All Started
Our non-profit foundation has made a home in beautiful historic Charleston, South Carolina, which is fitting, seeing that our state has more boating manufacturers per capita than any state in the U.S.
Originally starting as a sailing school in 2012, we added powerboating shortly after following the boating trends in the area. We eventually evolved into a group of safe boating advocates and instructors dedicated to helping new boat owners navigate the waterways safely.
As powerboating laws and insurance mandates have begun to change, we have come together with allies in our industry to focus our efforts on enhancing education for the boating industry, starting right here at home on some of the busiest waterways on the United States.
Accredited US Sailing & US Powerboating School
We are a group of safe boating advocates and trainers dedicated to helping new boat drivers navigate the waterways.
It is not hard to find feeds of the craziness happening. Boat fail videos are trending up. There are plenty of real-life examples and videos of the craziness you see on the waterways. That prompted us to learn to be the best training organization we can be. We recruited experienced captains that enjoy teaching, put them through rigid training and qualification courses, and have built the best team on the east coast to train you to drive a boat, power, or sail, big or small. We provide a structured educational program that builds a foundation for the skills and knowledge to be safe and enjoy years of boating memories with fewer nightmares.
Our instructors are certified with the highest instructor certification you can obtain. Our courses range from on-the-water instruction from three hours to 56 hours, depending on your objective. NASBLA approves the certifications we offer for all 50 states. The higher-level yacht programs, in power or sail, are recognized by the European Union and are honored in 25 countries worldwide as an International Certificate of Competency, the highest qualification a non-professional can receive. It allows you to rent a yacht without a captain for yourself and your family. It is accepted where a USCG 6 OUPV is not. US Powerboating is the ONLY certification recognized at their level in the US . We would love the opportunity to share our knowledge and love of the waterways with you and help you build the skills and knowledge you are looking to obtain.

Private Training. Private Instruction is available in all facets of powerboating on your own boat or on one of ours. This includes refresher courses as well as confidence-building practice in docking, close quarters maneuvering, or whatever skillset you'd like to improve on. Private Instruction Is $175 per hour with a minimum of three (3) hours.

We offer safe powerboating and race committee courses throughout the year. Courses are taught on-site at the Eastport Yacht Club by a US Sailing certified Powerboat Instructor.
