Brand History

In 1977 Jack Leek launched Ocean Yachts with the company’s first boat — a 40′ sportfisherman to which our 25th anniversary New Generation 40 Super Sport paid tribute. But Jack was not the first Leek to build boats in New Jersey. In fact, Leeks have been building and launching them in the historic Mullica River since 1721.

Ocean’s heritage reaches as far back as the original American colonies. Leek-manufactured vessels helped develop our coastal and river trade, create a rich fishing industry, battle pirates and privateers, intercept rum runners during Prohibition and German U-boats in World War II. We can justly say that the Leek family’s involvement in the American maritime industry is as old as the industry itself. Today’s Ocean Yachts may have little in common with those early Leek vessels, or even with C. P.’s revolutionary Pacemakers. But they express — in fiberglass instead of wood — the same spirited determination to produce the highest quality yachts in the world.

Ocean Yachts main focus is delivering semi-custom yachts to their customers. Expedition yachts allow the yacht owner to get to all corners of the world, opening up beautiful destinations otherwise difficult to reach. From the snowy landscapes and penguins of Antarctica to the coral reefs and jungles of Micronesia, an expedition yacht opens up the world for exploration.

There are a multitude of options available for expedition vessels. Above are examples of existing brokerage vessels. Other options to consider include Full Custom Builds and Semi Custom Builds. A Fully Custom Expedition yacht build is a ground up design and specification package, which will include tank testing of hull forms, 3D modeling, etc. A Semi Custom Expedition Build includes an existing hull form and common engineering package, already being used and then customizing the house styling, layout and décor.

The 80m Explorer Yacht, unnamed, is an example of a Fully Custom Explorer Build. The vessel includes float in float out wet dock that will be able to hold a 65-70 foot sport fisherman in the stern, when the sport fish is removed the tender well becomes a deep swimming pool.  She is diesel electric with Azipod drives.   The vessel has the capability of landing two helicopters and can house both helicopters in a single hangar.  The vessel also has a large tender garage that could hold multiple smaller vessels including a RIB, flats boat, jets skis and two submarines.  The vessel has accommodations for 18 guests and crew of 36.  The vessel would be commercial fit and finish on the exterior and the interior are envisioned to be built to high end cruise ship standards.

The 75m Explorer, by Admiral Shipyards is an example of a Semi Custom Build. The yacht’s exterior design, which remains unnamed, is a display of an elegant yet robust platform with generous exterior deck spaces. The expansive aft deck is designed to accommodate an Agusta Grande helicopter, complete with a storage and refueling hangar below deck.

The interior is spread across four decks and will be finished in a timeless nautical style that is finished with contemporary elements, which will be built and installed by German interio specialists, Fitz Interior. The owner, who is expected to spend prolonged period onboard, will be treated to an exclusive main deck area covering over 300 square metres with five additional guest suites on the lower deck.

Explorer yachts look a little bit different and offer extraordinary cruising potential, marking an exciting difference in the luxury yacht market for those who love an adventure on the open ocean. The original SeaPiper design called for a competent cruising trawler. It would have above average range with an easily driven hard chine hull. The trawler would have a large midship cockpit to allow crew to venture outside when under way and serve as a fine social and utility space at anchor. 

Additional requirements included simple, high quality mechanical systems, with good access for maintenance. The design would have a low center of gravity, shallow draft, and simple yet comfortable accommodations.

When the first SeaPiper launched, it embodied the above requirements, as well as the benefits of being easily trailered without special permits. One could imagine cruising the Pacific Northwest or New England during the summer, then spending winter of the same year in the Bahamas. It is a dream within reach on a SeaPiper.

Now built in Anacortes, Washington, the boat has been further refined. The builder extended the swim platform to improve the safety and utility of stern access. This extension also provides additional recreational space for fishing, SCUBA, and more. Following ABYC measurement guidelines, the extended swim platform now brings the SeaPiper to 37 feet LOA, so the model designation has been adjusted accordingly. 

The SeaPiper 37 fits the design ideas of Robert Beebe, recognized originator of long-range voyaging under power. Beebe was keen to have a safe, well-protected cockpit that allowed crew to step outside during their watch to scan the world around the horizon, while staying safely inside the boat.

A midship cockpit is also a key feature of the offshore fishing trawlers of the North Sea and Shetland Islands. These rugged fishing boats have sheltered cockpits that are protected behind bow structures. Crew members work offshore in relative safety, shielded by high bulwarks.

With port and starboard side doors in the cockpit, access to and from marina bulkheads and dinghies is particularly easy and safe, especially with pets or when transporting SCUBA and other gear. At anchor it is not hard to imagine the social aspects of a table and chairs set up in the cockpit, perhaps with an awning, that take advantage of the breeze coming over the bow, something aft cockpit trawlers do not enjoy.

The value of well-designed systems with good access is highly regarded by experienced trawler owners. Having switchable fuel filters installed in an easily reached location, for example, ensures that all fuel-related issues are minimized.

The SeaPiper 37 achieves long range performance with a single, efficient diesel engine with sufficient fuel tankage. The Beta Marine 85hp diesel engine is fitted to a 22-inch, four-blade prop on a shaft set almost level to the waterline, allowing for an efficient 8-knot cruise speed.

Bow and stern thrusters make light work of close quarter maneuvering.

The SeaPiper is also an ideal candidate for the optional SeaKeeper gyro stabilizer. This system settles the motion, especially important with a narrow hull.

The SeaPiper 37 is a wonderful choice for those who want to get the most cruising enjoyment by choosing to simplify instead of increasing boat size and adding complex equipment that demand ongoing attention and repair. Many of the world’s most successful cruisers choose basic yachts with simple systems. They are rewarded by arriving in paradise without a long list of repair projects. Cruising on a SeaPiper 37 will be less demanding, more versatile, less expensive, and more enjoyable.

This is a one-time disruption while we migrate more than 1.6 billion eBird observations and additional project data to new servers. After the move, our websites will have improved reliability, stability, and room to grow. Thank you for your understanding during this outage.

Don’t worry, your data (checklists, media, Bird Academy courses, Merlin life list, etc.) will be safe during the migration and will be unaffected when we come back online.

Unavailable: The following websites and services will be down during this period:

• eBird.org , including eBird portals, eBird Alerts, the eBird API, eBird Science, and data downloads
• Macaulay Library
• Birds of the World

Partially affected: Several Cornell Lab projects will remain up but services that require a login will be unavailable:

• Bird Academy login and store will be unavailable. Users will be able to access most course materials if they were logged in to the site before the outage. Snap ID quizzes will not function during the outage.
• NestWatch and Project FeederWatch login and data entry will be unavailable both on the website and the app. Please record your data on paper and enter it after the outage ends.
• eBird Mobile app : The Explore and My eBird functions will not work during the outage. You can use the app to create checklists and then submit them after the outage ends. Your eBird data will be safe.
• Merlin Bird ID app : Sound ID will continue to work, as well as Photo ID, Step-by-Step, and Explore, using your recent locations only. You will not be able to save sightings, refresh your life list, update your location, or log in to your account. These functions will return when the outage ends and your data will be safe.

Unaffected: The following sites will continue to function as normal:

What Can I Do During the Outage?

Go out birding.

• If you already have Merlin Bird ID app installed, you can still use it for some purposes. Though you won’t be able to update your location, save sightings, or refresh your life list, the ID functions will still work with your saved locations, and you can still browse species using Explore Birds
• If you already have the eBird Mobile app installed on your device, you can start eBird Mobile checklists during the downtime and submit them once eBird is back online. Learn how to Enter Sightings with eBird Mobile

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
