Ocean Foal, a Family Classic

This site is dedicated to Westerly’s “Westerly 22” a Denis Rayner design that was first put into production in 1963. 1963 is renowned for being  a very good vintage.

Our First Encounter

Here you see Ocean Foal when we first noticed her in front of (for this one time only) Lively Lady! Lively Lady was Sir Alec Rose’s boat that he circumnavigated the world with, returning triumphantly home to Southsea, Portsmouth in 1968. He was greeted by thousands of well wishers and given the keys to the City of Portsmouth.  He started the voyage in 1967 which was 2 years after Ocean Foal was built. Incidentally Lively Lady is presently located in Port Solent after a magnificent refit this year thanks to Alan Pridy and his fantastic team, we look forward to seeing Alan repeat that journey again very soon.

The Gunter Rig The Denys Rayner Gunter rigged 22, is all too often underrated as it doesn’t have a backstay or kicker, and many change the rigging unnecessarily. She has a large roller reefed mainsail, and can easily top 5.5 knots in a good breeze. I find, that when letting out more mainsheet than expected on a reach she pulls like a train and is extremely stable. In 1965 the Gunter rigged Westerly 22 “Young Tiger” did an Atlantic crossing with 3 adults, and proved what this little yacht is capable of.

Young Tiger 1965

Young Tiger sailed from the UK, to the Med and then on to the Caribbean in 1965 with three adults.

The Westerly 22 is a British trailerable sailboat that was designed by Denys Rayner as a cruiser and first built in 1963. [1] [2] [3] [4]

The design was derived from the wooden West Coaster 20 and later developed into the Nomad 22 in 1967. [1] [2] [5] [6]

  • 3 Operational history
  • 5 References

The design was built by Westerly Marine Construction in the United Kingdom , between 1963 and 1967, with 332 boats completed. [1] [2] [7] [8]

The Westerly 22 is a recreational keelboat , built predominantly of glassfibre, with wood trim. It has a Gunter rig or an optional masthead sloop rig, a spooned raked stem, an angled transom , a skeg -mounted rudder controlled by a tiller and a twin fixed keels . It displaces 3,150 lb (1,429 kg) and carries 1,050 lb (476 kg) of ballast. [1] [2]

The boat has a draft of 2.25 ft (0.69 m) with the standard twin keels. [1] [2]

The boat is normally fitted with a small outboard motor for docking and manoeuvring, although a Volvo Penta M1 inboard diesel was a factory option. The fuel tank holds 22 U.S. gallons (83 L; 18 imp gal) and the fresh water tank also has a capacity of 22 U.S. gallons (83 L; 18 imp gal). [1] [2]

The design has sleeping accommodation for four people, with a double "V"-berth in the bow cabin and two straight settee berths in the main cabin. The galley is located on both sides of the cabin, amidships. The galley is equipped with a two-burner stove and grill to port and a sink to starboard. A navigation station is located on the port side above the stove. The head is located centred in the bow cabin, under the "V"-berth. [1] [2]

The design has a hull speed of 5.74 kn (10.63 km/h). [2]

Operational history

The boat is supported by an active class club that organizes sailing events, the Westerly Owners Association . [9]

Hello Bill, the Westerly22 is particular favourite of mine. Those and the Nomad make regular appearances on ebay, in a range of different conditions. I was sailing my dinghy on the river Cam a good many years ago, when round the bend came a Westerly 22 in really lovely nick. Her owner and I had quite a pleasant conversation about our respective boats.

Richard, The 22s pop all the time, some in good nick, others in a poor state, but they'll be around for more years yet, because they were built over spec with heavy GRP layup. There's no easy answer for the disposal of abandoned fibreglass vessels of this ilk. They hang around in creeks, boatyards and clubs for yonks. How do you get rid of them? You can't burn them because of air pollution; you can't grind them to powder, and if you did, where would you put the stuff? Crunching them and burying them is not pracical. Apart from renovating and using them, is there a safe way of disposing them? Cheers, Bill.

That's a $64000 question Bill, apart from osmosis, there's very little to affect glassfibre vessels. I think the best way has to renovating and putting them back into service. I was cycling along the Cam yesterday, a favorite route of mine, and came to where the river bailiff and his trusty crew are based. One of their less pleasant jobs is to seize and tow away unregistered and abandoned boats. They have a motley collection indeed, there is an old Lowestoft trawler with the fish hold stripped out and sporting a less than appropriate superstructure, two bare hulls, sans cabins, and they were in the process of removing someones efforts from what was a Teal cabin cruiser. The origional cabin had been cut away and a 'structure' consisting of a wooden framework loosely adorned with sterling-board added to it. They were removing this prior to putting yet another bare hull up for sale by tender.

Richard, What does the Bailiff do with confiscated boats he cannot sell? Cheers, Bill.

Westerly Renown 32

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Center cockpit. The Westerly BERWICK, LONGBOW, PENTLAND & RENOWN, share the same basic hull.

LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length.
