2020 Cruisers Yachts 38 GLS

  • By Chris Caswell
  • Updated: March 3, 2020

Cruisers Yachts 38 GLS running shot

In case you haven’t realized, boats are like ice cream. You have to choose your flavor. Some are plain vanilla, some are chocolate, but Cruisers’ new 38 GLS is like the Neapolitan you remember as a kid. It blends the best of all flavors, and it satisfies, no matter what you are craving.

Want to go fast? Think 53 mph. Want to spend the night aboard? There’s a galley, shower and private stateroom. Want wind in your hair? Plant yourself in the bow seating for the ride of a lifetime. Want to just hang out at the local sandbar, splashing in and out of the water? Fold down the beach door that defines this versatile new water toy.

Interior and Accessories

I have no idea what GLS means. Great little ship? Whatever it stands for, it’s quite an amazing bow rider with outboard power, and also the amenities and craftsmanship found on the larger Cruisers Cantius yachts.

This isn’t Cruisers Yachts first foray into outboard-powered dayboats—that was the 338 OB. The 38 GLS proves a whole different vessel. For one thing, it offers the unforgettable beach door that turns a section of the starboard coaming into a fold-down addition to the cockpit, increasing space exponentially while replacing the transom platform lost to the outboards. It brilliantly delivers a great hangout area that’s popular when you’re at a sandbar or playing with water toys.

Cruisers took the concept one step further and—because parents want to keep an eye on their kids—the aft-facing bench backrest swivels to face the “beach,” so parents can do just that.

Courtesy Cruisers Yachts fold-out transom decking

That takes care of the aft end of the cockpit, and there are still two L-shaped midship dinettes, both with tables, that can handle a mob for munchies from the mini galley. This is equipped with the good stuff, including a grill, sink, fridge and ice maker, but the interesting fillip is putting two bar stools at the forward end of the galley counter. This surprised me because it occupies space usually given to a forward-facing companion seat, but I found the stools very usable. They add two more people to the cockpit entertainment zone and can be used for supervising the beach, and because they tuck into the corner, I was comfortable while the 38 GLS was running.

Courtesy Cruisers Yachts wet bar

The skipper gets the best seat in the house, of course, behind the blingy chrome-and-leather tilt wheel facing a black nonreflective dash inlaid with two rows of recessed push buttons for various systems. The joystick and throttle-shifter are exactly where you’d want them, and I liked that you look through the windshield when standing, rather than over it (or at the frame). The varnished nonslip footrest is at the perfect angle, and the seat bolster flips up for standing room if desired.

The portside walkway leads forward (with a closure door for wind and spray protection), and the U-shaped bow seating offers streamlined headrests on the forward-facing lounge. A removable table converts to a sun pad, and I liked the up/down buttons for the anchor windlass on the deck so you don’t have to open the rode locker.

Courtesy Cruisers Yachts head and shower

Down below is a surprise to almost rival the beach door: more than 6 feet, 5 inches of headroom. There’s an enclosed head to starboard (6 feet, 2 inches of headroom—wow) with a full shower. The forward settee/dinette is convertible to a berth, but the 38 GLS has a private stateroom tucked under the cockpit with a 6 ½-by-4 ½-foot berth, which is bigger than a double but a couple of inches shy of a queen. That’s more than enough for overnighting and great for secure naps for the kiddies. And a nearby microwave handles morning coffee without leaving the cabin, which is thoughtfully provided with a screen door to eliminate no-see-ums.

Courtesy Cruisers Yachts cabin

Underway, the 38 GLS is fun, with plenty of punch from the standard triple Mercury Verado 300 hp outboards (350 hp Verados are optional), and we easily reached just shy of 53 mph with several people aboard and full fuel. These Mercs give you joystick maneuvering for docking, and they aren’t going to melt your credit card for fuel either.

No big surprises, but the seaworthy hull has two strakes on each side and chine flats to improve stability and throw spray aside. We did doughnuts on Tampa Bay, crossing our wake from every angle, and the 38 GLS maintained perfect poise throughout. The triple Mercs have plenty of punch if you want to yank all manner of water toys, reaching planing speed (25.3 mph) in just 5.5 seconds and flat-out in just 21 seconds.

Courtesy Cruisers Yachts sunshade

An option is a 5.5 kW genset to power the air conditioning at anchor and/or the blender for piña coladas at the sandbar. I was surprised that a built-in vacuum is standard, but it makes sense to deal with sandy feet.

If you’re shopping around, take a look at the Sea Ray SLX400 ($708,552). It’s 3 feet longer, but has a similar layout in both the cockpit and cabin, with a beach door.

Learn More About the Triple Mercury Outboards Powering This Boat

A sterndrive version of the 38 GLS is coming, mostly to satisfy hardcore out-drivers or freshwater skippers, and I wondered what was under the big compartment aft on the outboard version. Turns out, the entire seating package rises on gas lifts, revealing a cavernous storage area (or perhaps a mother-in-law suite).

The Cruisers 38 GLS is genuinely likable. Whether you prefer chocolate, vanilla or strawberry, this is one tasty treat.

How We Tested

  • Engines: Triple 300 hp Mercury Verado
  • Drive/Props: Outboard/Revolution 4 16″ x 18″ stainless-steel 4-blade
  • Gear Ratio: 1.75:1 Fuel Load: 200 gal. Water on Board: 0 gal. Crew Weight: 850 lb.

High Points

  • Flexible seating next to the beach door.
  • Ignition interlock on the beach door prevents up or down use when engines are running.
  • Great headroom, not just in the cabin but in the shower too.
  • Dark cabin with only two small windows.
  • Access to aft cabin is only 22 inches wide, making graceful access or egress difficult.
  • Boarding gate to beach and transom is too low (14 inches) to be much use in slowing down kids.

Pricing and Specs

Speed, efficiency, operation.

cruiser yachts review

If you are considering the purchase of the 2023 Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius, you are in for a treat. In this review, we will explore the different highlights that make this boat an excellent choice for any family and water navigator.

One of the unique things about the Cantius lineup is that each one of these boats is designed to be very roomy and open to ensure a fun, safe, and enjoyable ride on the water for the captain and passengers alike. This boat is a wonderful choice for those who like to be immersed in the scene with their friends and family.

With comfort and performance married into one along with three different social zones on board, you are sure to love this boat and want to quickly snag one up for yourself.

Check out what else the 2023 Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius has to offer below.

Interior and Accessories

Starting at the stern of the boat, you will find plenty of seating for all your passengers. The L-shaped seating is not only plush but comfortable and relaxing too. The seating runs all along the stern side and up the port where it wraps around a cozy table affixed to a pedestal. Here, you can enjoy a nice conversation and snack with your friends or family.

Contained within the stern area is a Corian counter that is home to an icemaker underneath and both cup holders and a charger on top. Across is another Corian countertop that is home to a fridge to ensure your drink and snacks stay cool.

To help you stay cool, there is an extendable awning that will provide an ample amount of shade as you cruise along the water. The best part about this extendable awning is that it comes standard on the 46 Cantius, so you do not have to upgrade to receive it.

Moving over to the starboard side, you will find stairs that lead down to the swim platform. The stairs are protected and enclosed by a stainless-steel gate to ensure safety at all times. The swim platform itself is large in size and comes equipped with a ladder to make getting in and out of the water a breeze. You do have the option to upgrade to a hydraulic option.

You will find plenty of storage options on board throughout this area where you can keep your water accessories and more.

Heading up to the front of the boat, you will find beautiful railings that run along the front and sides of the boat. At the bow, there is another area of seating. Here, you will find a U-shaped lounge with sides that can extend up to 72 inches. To make it even more comfortable and cozy, you can lift up the headrests to turn the seating into a single chaise. The center cushion of the seating rises up and shows a table that allows passengers to pull it out and set it up.

The interior section of the boat is accessed through a set of glass doors that are smoked and slide for easy access and convenience. The flush deck allows for seamless entry into the interior without the worry of having to step up or down. The galley is located on board between the two main deck areas and comes equipped with Corian counters, a stainless-steel sink, a microwave, a double electric cooktop, and multiple cabinets. The galley section stretches to the starboard where you will also find a refrigerator. There is a storage space alongside the refrigerator as well as a TV that is located on a swivel mount.

Located within the interior is also the salon. As with the galley, there are two sections, one at port and one at starboard. The area at the port includes a dinette with seating and a table. At starboard, there is a loveseat to provide additional seating options.

For the captain of the boat, you are located at the help, which is mounted at the starboard. The console consists of two 12-inch screens with an autopilot control that is featured between the two. The steering wheel is made for comfort and can be adjusted via a tilt feature. The seat is plush and includes both a flip armrest and bolster.

Additional interior features worth noting:

  • Opening salon windows
  • Opening sunroof
  • Air conditioning
  • Master stateroom
  • Safety rails
  • 50-pound mounted anchor
  • Amtico flooring
  • Oak wood cabinetry
  • USB connectivity
  • Stereo and climate control panels
  • Combination washer and dryer

The 2023 Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius comes with a hefty performance package, which allows you to enjoy both worlds – luxury and performance. This boat comes with 2 435-HP Volvo Penta IPS600 engines. These are both diesel engines that come equipped with a joystick and pod drives. Due to the dual engines, getting up to speed and cruising along the waters will come without much effort.

One of the most notable things about this boat when it comes to performance is its ability to handle well. When giving the boat full throttle, the bow will rise up, but lowering it and moving forward is not a task or chore. The joystick allows the captain to easily maneuver and control the boat despite the water conditions.

  • Luxury throughout
  • Spacious seating
  • Galley is large and immersive
  • Performance is not lacking
  • TVs throughout the interior
  • Hydraulic swim platform

Pricing and Specifications

Pricing for the 2023 Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius is not readily available. Looking at the manufacturer’s website there is no pricing data provided. With that said, research has indicated that this model will cost somewhere around $1,000,000 brand new. Of course, this price will vary depending on any customizations that are chosen along with other factors such as location, demand for the boat, and so on.

When it comes to the pricing of this boat, it is important to keep in mind that there are many optional equipment options and upgrades to consider as well. Each of these will affect the price of your boat, so it is important to work closely with a dealer who can assist you.

Cruisers Yachts 41 Cantius

  • By Kevin Falvey
  • Updated: December 21, 2011

Cruisers Yachts 41 Cantius Boat Review

A boat designed for entertaining or one that’s built for cruising? Cruisers Yachts 41 Cantius proves these attributes aren’t mutually exclusive. Its accommodations echo top-line residential design, while its hull design, construction and propulsion showcase the art of modern production boatbuilding ( see the complete photo gallery here ).

When evaluating a cruiser, the first thing I do is check out the key systems. No number of berths, settees or nifty décor details will make you comfortable if corners were cut on the build. I am happy to report that Cruisers Yachts fits out the 41 Cantius for more than just earning accolades on a convention center or showroom floor.

For example, the 13.5 kW genset, standard aboard the 41 Cantius, not only provides enough power to comfortably allow you to run most of your appliances and lights while on the hook, but also delivers enough reserve output so that breakers won’t blow when the refrigerator or air-conditioner compressor kicks on. Furthermore, this genset’s output isn’t so large that its engine won’t be loaded properly when it’s running, which affects efficiency and longevity. Indeed, the 41 Cantius’ generator meets the requirements of ABYC E18-8: It’s optimally sized. Dockside power is 50-amp, rather than the 30-amp systems more common aboard cruisers this size, again ensuring ample power.

Air conditioning is another system where hidden cost-cutting can occur. Not aboard the 41 Cantius. It has three units pumping 40,000 Btu of reverse-cycle heat and cooling, providing ample climate control for this dual-salon cruiser.

Water capacity? Naval architects and long-term cruisers agree that, nominally, five gallons of water per day, per person, is a sufficient supply for bathing, doing dishes, using the head, etc. Quick math suggests that the 41 Cantius’ 75-gallon supply provides enough water for a crew of six for the weekend — plus a little more.

All of these systems are also easily reached for service. In the engine room, I found more than four feet of headroom and access on all sides of both engines. Every wire and plumbing run is labeled with engraved plates for troubleshooting ease. Behind a panel in the amidships stateroom, all electrical modules and the helm breaker panel are housed in one place. Compared with boats in which the electronic control modules are scattered, diagnostic time here is drastically cut — a benefit whether paid mechanics perform the service or you do it yourself.

At first glance, it’d be easy to lump this boat in the coupe category with other top cruisers like Sea Ray’s 410 Sundancer, with its three-side enclosure. Unlike the Sea Ray, the 41 Cantius’ helm deck is completely enclosed, boasting an after bulkhead, glass “Tri-Slide” door. This creates an upper salon, complete climate control and conversational privacy with a view while entertaining dockside. Plus, it eliminates the hassle of canvas curtains. The helm deck also has an electric sunroof.

This upper salon can host a crowd of guests, thanks to an expansive lounge, entertainment center and air conditioning. The view is fantastic, and even rainy days will prove enjoyable here. When the sun shines, open the slider wide, and access between the helm-deck-cum-salon and the cockpit provides easy flow between the two spaces. With a comfy settee and recliner and simple side-to boarding, dockside entertaining doesn’t get any better — unless you work the transom magic I discovered aboard the 41 Cantius.

The extended swim platform is more than four feet long and has a bar with two removable pedestal-mount bar stools. The bar hinges open, revealing a massive lazarette with dedicated stowage for the stools and cockpit tables, as well as fenders, lines, brushes and other dunnage.

While the 41 Cantius is available with IPS, the vessel I tested turned its props through twin Volvo Penta DPH diesel sterndrives. This propulsion, combined with the vented stepped hull, had me comfortably romping across a choppy Lake Michigan at just over 23 knots, topping out at 33.8 knots. Docking with the Volvo Penta’s joystick proved a snap against the wind, and, as an aside, I also docked it without the joystick. If you want the trimability, shallower draft and efficiency afforded by sterndrives, I can vouch for their suitability.

Accommodations include a forward master with plenty of headroom, a queen berth and en suite bath. Amidships is a guest room with twin berths (that can form a queen) and another en suite head.

So imagine yourself in the helm seat, swiveled around and engaged with your guests, watching with prideful care as they enjoy the amenities and the easy movement between dock, platform, cockpit and upper salon that the 41 Cantius affords. The experience is common aboard larger yachts but rare among boats this size. So the question, then, isn’t whether the 41 Cantius is capable of both entertaining and taking to the sea. The question is: Are you?
