Christensen 140

  • By Dudley Dawson
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

For those who remember the 1960s, Jimmy Dean and the country ballad “Big Bad John” are inseparable. It would be another decade or two before packages of premium sausage bore Dean’s name, and even there, his roots remained prominent in the form of a cowboy boot in the logo.

Considering this history, it’s no surprise Dean christened each of his yachts Big Bad John . The latest to carry the name is a sleek motoryacht from Christensen Yachts’ busy Vancouver, Washington, yard. An experienced yachtsman, Dean had definite ideas for this yacht, and the result is more a symphony than a ballad. The consonance of design has yielded a vessel that is not simple, yet the disparate parts combine to deliver an exceptionally pleasing whole that’s as smooth as pure harmony.

At 140 feet, Big Bad John is one of the longest yachts in memory to utilize a raised pilothouse. Most yachts of this length would carry at least a full pilothouse, and perhaps even a full third deck. Dean, however, wanted something more evocative of motion and made a deliberate choice to go long rather than high to achieve the space he wanted.

It is a wise choice from both aesthetic and technical standpoints. Visually, Big Bad John looks like she’s moving even when she’s standing still, and that fluidity is only partly illusion. By keeping the profile low, the beam can be a foot or so narrower than that on a three-deck yacht without compromising stability. This increases the length/beam ratio, an important factor in reducing resistance and power requirements, and in increasing range. There is more hull bottom area for a given displacement, lowering the bottom loading and improving performance further. The lower profile of Big Bad John also means less windage and a lower vertical center of gravity. These characteristics result in less rolling at sea and at anchor, counteracting the reduced beam and providing increased comfort and safety.

Another unusual design choice is the asymmetrical arrangement: the saloon and dining room are full-beam to port, walkaround to starboard. The arrangement works-for the owner, because it offers more interior area; for the crew, because it provides space to work the yacht in port and at sea. Large yachts invariably tie up starboard side to, so there’s seldom any true purpose for a portside deck. If you think the arrangement might look strange, keep in mind that it is nearly impossible to see both sides of the boat at once. Even so, Setzer Design Group did a great job of keeping the two sides similar. Only a careful observer will notice the difference.

The asymmetry continues below-decks in the master stateroom, where the berth is shifted to starboard, leaving space to port for a comfortable sitting area. The berth is attractively finished in the same medium-tone satin mahogany used throughout the interior, and is capped by a dropped tray that creates the impression of a canopy bed while inconspicuously housing the air-conditioning ductwork. The master baths are also dissimilar. Hers is a bit larger, with a full tub and spacious vanity, and his is fitted with a shower. Two large walk-in lockers round out the master accommodations.

Two identical guest staterooms are forward of the master stateroom. Each has a queen berth and spacious hanging locker, and the en suite baths are equipped with tubs. A captain’s cabin rivaling the guest accommodations in size is forward, as are two crew cabins, a crew mess and a laundry room. An exercise room is to port, between the master and guest staterooms, in a space large enough to house a third guest cabin.

Between the guest and crew spaces is a short passageway with a door at each end and stowage lockers to either side. Not only does this clever connector allow the crew to carry out their housekeeping chores easily and efficiently, it provides an important second route of escape in the event of fire or other emergency in either space.

Forward of the pilothouse on the main deck are large stowage areas under the brow and an open galley and dinette that will be a favorite informal gathering area for crew and guests alike. A passageway to port of the pilothouse will serve multiple duties. During formal dinners, it is the service route between the dining room and the galley; in port, it will be handy for bringing supplies into the galley, the stowage areas under the pilothouse and the brow, and the crew area belowdecks. To starboard are an entry foyer and a day head, as well as stairways down to the accommodations and up to the pilothouse and boat deck.

The dining room is open to the saloon, but separated by a low divider cabinet and hefty columns. The table is centered to port, leaving room for a sizable bar to starboard. The saloon isn’t quite full-beam-remember the side deck to starboard only-but is wide enough for the several large settees and chairs clustered around a grand piano. The furniture, the carpet and the overhead are done in light, complementary hues that bring out the best in the satin mahogany paneling. They create a space I find especially attractive and inviting, even without an evening of music by the master.

On the flying bridge, four companion seats flank the captain’s chair. A huge table to starboard with an L-shape settee is just abaft the seats. A wet bar seating six is to port, and a row of individual sun lounges is beneath the radar arch. A pair of canister liferafts and a large RIB tender handled by a centerline davit stow aft.

Big Bad John is just about everything a yacht should be. She was designed to suit the particular tastes and specific requirements of an experienced owner who wasn’t afraid to break a few rules. She was solidly built by a well-respected yard, to the high standards of ABS class and MCA certification. Her interior is warm, comfortable and upscale without being pretentious. Rather than being stored in some remote marina, the yacht is moored behind the owner’s home, where she will receive constant attention. Perhaps best of all, she is owned by a yachtsman who will cruise extensively, providing a great deal of pleasure to himself, to his family and friends, and to all those who might be fortunate enough to spot John cruising by.

Big, yes. Bad, no way.

Jimmy Dean, country-and western superstar, hangs over the second-story railing, peering down at the black 107-foot hull that lies upside down. “I wouldn’t have missed this for anything,” he says.

The newly constructed hull of his yacht is about to be turned, and traditionally, this is the key point in any yacht’s creation.

The others crowding the rail nod their agreement with Dean — Dennison Marine owners Kit and Ann Dennison; vice president Carl Bischoff; naval architect Joseph Langlois; former Texas rodeo star John Murray; Dean’s captain, Ted Heyniger, and 15 or so other pals and Dennison workers.

After this rite, the superstructure can be fitted and Dean’s boat completed. But first, this excruciatingly slow, cautious turnover. Sturdy straps supporting the hull are hooked to pulley cables attached to two monster yellow cranes overhead. As we watch, the straps are pulled taut — then tauter. We hold our breath, strain with the straps, and cheer as the hull finally begins inching upward.

We are all perspiring. The excitement. And the heat here in the Dennison plant. There’s no air conditioning, and the welders and the aluminum cutting machine spit sparks.

THE DAY OF 1,000 LAUGHS

But despite the discomfort, Dean keeps us laughing. It’s the Jimmy Dean show. Someone remarks on his colorful speech, and he chuckles, “You think that’s colorful, you should see my shorts.” Someone mentions a 16-year-old daughter, and Dean chortles, “Only 16? Heck, I’ve got underwear older than that.” No topic is off limits.

But gradually, the torrent of quips and corn slows to a trickle. This is serious business. A cliffhanger. The hull must not swing. It could bump and damage the adjacent boat shell. Gently, it eases up. Dean, like the rest of us, almost dances with tension.

BIG JIM, THE MARLBORO MAN

Up close like this, he doesn’t look like a comic. He looks like the Marlboro man: T-square build, no hips, strong jaw. His tan Texas skin is tracked with grin lines, worry lines and squinting-into-the-sun lines. A lanky 6-feet-4, in cowboy boots and cowboy hat, he barely clears a standard ceiling.

This boat is his baby. He insisted it be wholly American made, even to the Stewart-Stephenson engines. He knows his boat. He and his wife of 39 years, Sue, spend half the year on their present yacht, Big Bad John, including two summer months in Kennebunkport buddying around with George and Barbara Bush. They’ll do the same on this new Big Bad John, also named for the song he wrote that sold 5 million records. “Anywhere in the world,” Heyniger says, “when we pull in, they know whose yacht it is.”

Dean enjoys this lifestyle. “Life is better now than ever,” he says. “I’ve learned to relax. My agent says I turn down enough to keep five actors going.”

JUST KEEPING BUSY

That’s the new Dean. The old Dean was a workaholic who tried every kind of work. He’s a country-and-western Renaissance man. He has picked cotton, dug ditches, run tractors, bailed hay, farmed, raised hogs, played piano, harmonica and accordion, written hit songs, hosted radio and TV shows (for Johnny Carson, Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas, Dinah Shore, etc.), and his own Jimmy Dean Show (in the late ’50s and early ’60s), and acted in films and on television. He developed a better sausage, and launched the Jimmy Dean Meat Co. and sold it for megabucks to Sara Lee.

“For 60 years,” says the 61 year-old Dean, “I’ve been looking for something I could do. And I’ll keep on looking till I find it.” Actually, he has found it before. “But once a project works,” he says, “I look for another project.”

Along the way he has amassed a fortune. Fame and money force a lot of changes in one’s life. But Dean resists. “We still live in the house we bought for $47,000 30 years ago in New Jersey,” he says.

But a new boat is something else. Dean looks lovingly at the hull, now almost completely upright, and grins. “It’s going to be the prettiest boat on the whole Eastern Seaboard.”

Marine News from the Great Lakes

Jimmy dean-sausage king & boater.

Published: Tuesday, June 22, 2010 7:00 am By: Van W. Snyder, CAE

I was saddened to hear of Jimmy Dean's death on June 13, 2010. Most young people think Jimmy did only one thing- own a sausage company. He did; he founded the Jimmy Dean Sausage Company with his brother Don in 1969 and the company was sold to Consolidated Foods in 1984 which was renamed Sara Lee Corporation; yet the products still bear his name.

For those who are seasoned, we know Jimmy as a country and western singer, actor and television host. In 1961 he had a huge music hit with the song Big Bad John which earned him a 1962 Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording. Both Patsy Cline and Roy Clark started their music careers with Jimmy. He was also an actor. He had a supporting role in Diamonds Are Forever, a 1971 James Bond thriller, as the Las Vegas billionaire Willard Whyte. He appeared in several episodes of Daniel Boone in the later 60s and in two episodes of Fantasy Island in 1981-82. He had his own TV show in the mid-60s called The Jimmy Dean Show. He was, indeed, a man with diverse talents.

But I remember him as an avid boater. In the late 70s one of my positions was managing the marina at Bahia Mar Yachting Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL. This today, is the primary location of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show held in October each year. Jimmy Dean was one of our slip renters. One of my joys was to welcome new boaters to the marina and one way of doing so was to personally deliver a bottle of the resorts best scotch. So, not to miss an opportunity, I headed to Mr. Dean's yacht Big Bad John (what else would he call it?), knocked on the hull, asked for permission to come aboard and got to set in the yacht's salon with Mr. Dean. I welcomed him to the marina, had a diverse conversation for about ten minutes and thanked him again, as I departed, for choosing Bahia Mar. Meeting someone of his fame, my memory of that experience was how down-to-earth he was. He didn't have to let this young whippersnapper on board, but he did and graciously welcomed me and spent time with me. I'm sure I never missed a chance to tell family and friends that I met Jimmy and "even had a conversation on board his yacht." Back then, Florida attracted celebrities as a result of the cruising opportunities and the proximity to the Bahamas. The island of Bimini is only 49 nautical miles from the coast. In addition to Jimmy Dean, other celebrities boating in the area, I recall, were Neil Sedaka, Roy Clark, Joe Namath, and Evel Knievel. I'm sure there were more.

Jimmy Dean's yacht then was a 53 Hatteras motor yacht. A 53 Hatteras was considered a good-size yacht back then. I suspect Jimmy got infected with two-foot, or 10-foot or 20-foot-itis. Yacht Magazine published an article written by Dudley Sawson published in October, 2007 reporting on Jimmy Dean's Christensen 140. Yes, it was named Big Bad John as had all of his boats before it. Mr. Dawson noted: "At 140 feet, Big Bad John is one of the longest yachts in memory to utilize a raised pilothouse. Dean ... wanted something more evocative of motion and made a deliberate choice to go long rather than high to achieve the space he wanted." He continued by saying, "Her interior is warm, comfortable and upscale without being pretentious. Rather than being stored in some remote marina, the yacht is moored behind the owner's home, where she will receive constant attention. Perhaps best of all, she is owned by a yachtsman who will cruise extensively, providing a great deal of pleasure to himself, to his family and friends and to all those who might be fortunate enough to spot John cruising by. Big, yes. Bad, no way."

DB9 John Rosatti

On board 52m DB9 with serial yacht owner John Rosatti

Related articles, superyacht directory.

Sophia Wilson pays a visit to a self-made American businessman known as much for his dealerships and hospitality outlets as he is for his affinity for yacht ownership. He tells her about his latest acquisition, the PJ DB9 , and why he may already be on the lookout for his next refit challenge...

I’m not like your typical owner,” John Rosatti says. “I enjoy making a deal, buying a yacht, making it better and then selling it. That’s my fun.” Now in his seventies, the American businessman estimates he has owned more than 25 yachts, and when I meet him on board his current boat, 52.36 metre DB9 , it quickly becomes apparent he isn’t done yet.

Docked right in the middle of the Monaco Yacht Show, the sporty Palmer Johnson is attracting plenty of interest. “She’s like a movie star,” Rosatti quips. He is now selling DB9 and already has his eye out for his next big project. “I have had a look at a couple, but I would rather have this yacht under contract first, rather than end up with two boats,”he says with a smile. “I have done that before and I have learned it’s much better to sell first.”

As he’s told us before, his love of boats started from an early age as his grandfather used to take him out on his fishing boat. “He would be out in the back of the boat with friends, and I would steer it,” he recalls. His grandfather’s guests included New York Yankees star players Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford. “He [his grandfather] was on boats all his life,” Rosatti says, “and I started with them as soon as I could afford to.”

His first boat was a 10m Cigarette, which he raced on the circuit before moving onto a 16.7 metre Ocean Yachts sportfisher and then an 18.2 metre Hatteras . He then went on to build the 35 metre Denison Thunderball , which still holds the record for the fastest American-built twin-engine motor yacht over 100 feet in the 20th century. “We learned a lot from that boat; it did 50 knots and was a lot of fun,” he remembers. “At the time, in 1988, she was the 89th biggest yacht in the world. It shows how much things have changed since then.”

For the past decade or so, Rosatti’s yachting portfolio has focused more on comfort over speed. He built 49.37 metre Christensen Remember When in 2010 and, when we last checked in with him in 2016, had just refitted 65.2 metre Codecasa Double Down . However, power proved an enticing quality when it came to the Palmer Johnson DB9 . “I have had a lot of much larger but slower boats in the past, but she is a whole different yacht,” says Rosatti of DB9 , which has a maximum speed of 32.5 knots. “I had a dilemma with downsizing, but when I saw her, she was so beautiful and sexy, and size was no longer an issue.”

The first hull from Palmer Johnson’s PJ 170 SportYacht range, DB9 was launched in 2010 but was barely used by her owner. Rosatti’s wife, Zuzana, whom he married in St Barths in 2020, spotted the boat in the magazine. Their broker, YPI’s Peter Thompson, knew the yacht’s previous captain and arranged for them to see her in Istanbul. “The boat was really not used at all by the previous owners. I think she had less than 200 hours on her and that is part of what attracted me to it,” Rosatti explains.

After purchasing her in 2019, Rosatti undertook a six-month refit at Dunya Yachts , which included rebuilding all the pumps and engines and a full system upgrade, despite her limited use. “Sometimes not using a boat is as bad as using it too much,” he says.

While Rosatti oversaw the technical side of the rebuild, Zuzana transformed the interior, working closely with Turkish interiors group Ulutaş. “It’s a wow interior, with light wood decor found throughout. She is very impressive,” he says. “We added a bar because she didn’t have one before, and the salon now feels like you are on a 65 metre [213 footer]. She feels brand new, not like an 11-year-old boat.”

Zuzana’s input enhanced the refit experience. “I enjoy the refit, especially now that Zuzana does the interior and the decorating. For me, that was always something I couldn’t do, I like the engines,” he says. There is also a clear delineation in the partnership. “She has an opinion, and I don’t get a say,” he laughs. “Take the red stripe on DB9 . She suggested it and I said, ‘Really? A red stripe on a champagne hull?’ but as soon as you see it you realize it looks great.”

Rosatti’s love of “fixing up” famously started with cars rather than boats. “My father was a mechanic for the [New York] Transit Authority, and he was a lover of cars. He would always be fixing them,” he says. “I bought one of my own when I was 16, fixed it up and sold it to my friends.” Rosatti carried on working on cars at night while working in construction and haulage before he decided to make it his career. In 1968 he opened a body shop; less than seven years after that he opened the doors to Brooklyn’s Plaza Auto Mall.

Rosatti still owns six dealerships, but with his son now predominantly looking after the automotive business, he can enjoy cars purely for pleasure. His collection currently stands at more than 100, most of them retro-mod American hot rods from the 1940s to the 1980s. With this sector of the market currently booming, Rosatti is now looking to slim down his fleet. “I think it is getting a little old for me, but I will keep maybe five to ten cars,” he says. “I bought a Bugatti a couple of years ago and now I have had three of them, including the 300mph one. I’m a speed nut and I love to go fast. No other car compares to it.”

Rosatti’s other business interests are centered around the hospitality industry, where again he has sought to fix problems. “When I moved to Florida in 1992 you had to wait in line to get into all the restaurants. I didn’t like having to wait and tip the maître d’ so I decided to open my own,” he says. He launched his first branch of fine dining Italian restaurant Vic & Angelo’s a couple of years later and went on to open another two, as well as a gastropub called The Office. The latter inspired his next business venture, BurgerFi, a fast-food franchise aimed at serving “better burgers.”

I wanted to create something healthy and tasty but for around the $6 mark,” he says. The first BurgerFi restaurant opened in Fort Lauderdale, on the site of what had been a Burger King. “It went like a house on fire,” he says. “The Burger King did $800,000 a year in gross sales; in our first year we did $2.4 million.” Now with more than 120 BurgerFi outlets, Rosatti has taken the company public, while remaining a major shareholder and advisor.

He admits the line between his hobbies and business is a bit blurred. “I’m dedicated to boats, cars and restaurants. Nothing else gets my attention – I’m not interested in golf or other things.”

Ultimately, Rosatti is hoping to be able to spend more time on board his next yacht. “I want to do some long-range stuff now,” he says. “There are so many places that I haven’t been to by boat. I haven’t been to Alaska, I haven’t been to Dubai, I haven’t been to Hawaii. I am more or less semi-retired now, so I can do longer trips.”

With blue water cruising in mind, Rosatti is now on the hunt for a 60 to 65 metre vessel that is less than ten years old. He is determined to stick with refit rather than taking on another new build. “I don’t think I’m at an age now where you want to spend three or four years building a yacht and getting the brain damage from that,” he says with a smile. “I have built maybe ten new builds and it is a job. Even after you are done with the building side of it, it still takes maybe six months to a year to get it to perfection.”

However, Rosatti is realistic about what he will be leaving behind with DB9 . “It’s unbelievable the attention you get anywhere you go with her,” he says. “My problem is I always miss the one I had before, but being in the car and boating business, you sell and you buy.”
