Sprewell yacht sold, home foreclosed?

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

MILWAUKEE — Former NBA star Latrell Sprewell’s home is up for foreclosure and his yacht sold at auction to help pay off the US$1.3 million he owes on the boat, according to court filings.

Sprewell, who once turned down a $21-million, three-year contract extension saying, “I’ve got my family to feed,” has apparently fallen on tough times.

RBS Citizens NA, or Citizens Bank, filed a foreclosure suit last week in Milwaukee County for the $405,000 home Sprewell bought in the Milwaukee suburb of River Hills in 1994.

In court documents, the bank said Sprewell owed $295,138 in outstanding payments plus interest.

Sprewell failed to make his mortgage payments of $2,593 per month from September 2007 to January 2008, the documents said.

The Associated Press tried to reach Sprewell for comment Monday but a telephone number in his name was disconnected. A message to one of his lawyers, Robert A. Gist of Atlanta, and an agency in New York were not immediately returned.

The 37-year-old Sprewell played 13 seasons in the NBA for the Minnesota Timberwolves, the New York Knicks and the Golden State Warriors. The Milwaukee native was a four-time all-star, but perhaps best known for choking coach P.J. Carlesimo during a Warriors practice in 1997.

He hasn’t played professional basketball since turning down the $21-million extension from the Timberwolves during the 2004-05 season. He was making $14.6 million at the time.

Last month, Sprewell’s 20-metre yacht, named “Milwaukee’s Best,” was sold at auction for $856,000 to a man from Milwaukee.

It was originally worth about $1.5 million. The bank holding that mortgage, New York-based North Fork Bank, asked that it be seized to pay off $1.3 million in debt.

Sprewell’s firm, LSF Marine Holdings, hadn’t made its $10,322 monthly payments on time or maintained the necessary insurance on the boat, the bank said. Sprewell bought the yacht built by the Italian firm Azimut-Benetti in 2003, according to court records.

A federal marshal seized the boat last summer in Manitowoc, about 130 kilometres north of Milwaukee, where it was in storage.

The sale price means the bank is still owed about $500,000, and it said in court filings it plans to go after the rest.

Last week, prosecutors in New York said they’d drop their case against Sprewell, who was accused of assaulting his girlfriend in front of their children. Prosecutors in Westchester County said the charges will be dismissed in a year if Sprewell stays out of trouble.

Spree’s Yacht Gets Taken Away

by Marcel Mutoni

If I were to make a list of reasons why I absolutely love the NBA, the fact that Latrell Sprewell owns a yacht (the awesomely named “Milwaukee’s Best”) would have to be placed somewhere near the top. But now, sadly, this is no longer the case .

Former professional basketball star Latrell Sprewell, who three years ago rejected a $21 million contract offer, calling it insulting and saying he had a family to feed, had his 70-foot, $1.5 million, Italian-built yacht repossessed Tuesday.

Apparently, Spree hasn’t been keeping up with his monthly loan and insurance payments on the yacht.

Spree deserves to own a yacht (if for no other reason than our amusement), and I assume he still has to feed his family, so there can only be on solution here: Comeback Time!

How Latrell Sprewell Blew $100 Mil, Lost His Family, Homes and Yacht

Robert Littal

Three things come to mind when I think of Latrell Sprewell.

1- Him choking PJ Carlesimo.

2- Him making the awful decision to turn down an extension because that wasn’t enough to feed his family (he never got anything close to that again).

3- Jay Z’s line on Money ain’t a Thing: “On the Jewels, I blew more money than Latrell”.  Seems like Jigga knew something in advance.

This story shouldn’t surprise you but Spree has pretty much lost everything he gained while playing in the NBA.

The Timberwolves were happy with Sprewell, but he did not have the same sentiments. When offered a $14.6 million extension that would have earned him $27-30 million over the next couple of years and kept him playing ball, Sprewell made the statement that became almost as famous as his coach-choking incident. When asked about turning down the contract extension, Sprewell said, “Why would I want to help them win a title? They’re not doing anything for me. I’m at risk. I have a lot of risk here. I got my family to feed.” In 2007, Sprewell left that “family he had to feed” and was sued for $200 million. That year, his yacht was repossessed, he defaulted on his $1.5 million mortgage and Milwaukee went after him for $3 million in back taxes. Two years later he lost his other mansion. During the course of his career, Latrell Sprewell made over $100 million. Today, Celebrity NetWorth reports that he has around $50,000 and lives in a modest rental. While he left the family, the courts say he still has to find a way to feed them. Sprewell’s story might be a lesson on the importance of understanding humility, prudence, and financial literacy. If he’d had better advisors, he might not be broke today.

Young players should pay attention, so this doesn’t happen to them.

Latrell Sprewell

What Happened to Former NBA Star Latrell Sprewell?

Latrell Sprewell was once one of the best players in the NBA.

Unfortunately, while Sprewell possessed an array of abilities on the court, it was his actions off the court that would often make headlines. One such instance cost him 68 games at the height of his career. Another horrible decision cost him his career completely, a decision that immensely affected his life after basketball.

What happened to Latrell Sprewell?

The on-court career of Latrell Sprewell

Following a stellar career at Alabama, Latrell Sprewell was taken with the 24th overall pick in the 1992 NBA draft by the Golden State Warriors and he made an immediate impact. As the third option behind Chris Mullin and Tim Hardaway, Sprewell averaged 15.4 points and was named to the All-Rookie Second Team. He took on more of the scoring load in his second season, averaging 21 points and was an All-NBA First Team selection. He made the All-Star team in 1994, 1995, and 1997. In six years in Golden State, Sprewell averaged 20.1 points per game.

Latrell Sprewell joined the New York Knicks ahead of the lockout-shortened 1998-1999 NBA season, coming off the bench and averaging 16.4 points, helping the team to the NBA Finals. Sprewell moved into the starting lineup the following season and played in New York until 2003. In five years in the Big Apple, Sprewell averaged 17.9 points per game and made one All-Star Game appearance in 2001.

Sprewell finished his NBA career with the Minnesota Timberwolves, playing two years alongside Kevin Garnett. In 2003-2004, the Wolves made it to the Western Conference Finals, losing to the Los Angeles Lakers. Sprewell averaged 16.8 points that season and 12.8 the following year, which would turn out to be his last in the NBA.

Sprewell lost 68 games of his career and millions of dollars for choking his coach, P.J. Carlesimo

At the pinnacle of his career, Latrell Sprewell nearly lost everything. He had made three All-Star Game appearances for Golden State in four years but clashed with Warriors head coach P.J. Carlesimo. On December 1, 1997, things reached a boiling point at practice. After Sprewell was yelled at by Carlesimo about his passing, he snapped. Sprewell charged his head coach and grabbed him by the throat, dragging him until he was pulled off by teammates. 20 minutes later, Sprewell still hadn’t calmed down and once again assaulted Carlesimo, punching him in the face and once again had to be pulled off his head coach.

As a result of the incident, Sprewell was suspended for the rest of the season without pay, which amounted to 68 games, and the Warriors voided the remaining three years and $23.7 million of his contract.

Sprewell’s refusal to sign a new contract with the Timberwolves cost him his career

After getting a second chance in the league with the New York Knicks, Latrell Sprewell joined the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2003. When offered a three-year/$21 million extension ahead of the 2004-2005 season, Sprewell swiftly turned it down, offering up what many think was one of the most ridiculous and insulting explanations in NBA history.

“Why would I want to help them win a title? They’re not doing anything for me. I’m at risk. I have a lot of risk here. I got my family to feed.” Latrell Sprewell

It was a decision that would ultimately cost Latrell Sprewell his career. He had the worst year of his career and would never play in the NBA again.

In the years that followed, things only got worse for Sprewell. He was sued for $200 million by an ex-girlfriend. His yacht was repossessed. He defaulted on his $1.5 million mortgage and the state of Wisconsin went after him for more than $3 million in back taxes. He had another home repossessed and is reportedly worth only about $50,000 today.

Latrell Sprewell made more than $100 million during his NBA career.

Federal marshal seizes former NBA star Latrell Sprewell’s yacht

MILWAUKEE—A federal marshal has seized a $1.5 million yacht that belonged to former NBA star Latrell Sprewell after he defaulted on the mortgage.

Sprewell, 36, played 13 NBA seasons and was a four-time All-Star. The Milwaukee native has not played professional basketball since turning down a three-year, $21 million extension from the Minnesota Timberwolves during the 2004-05 season.

The marshal acted on a court order requested by a New York bank that plans to sell the boat to pay off $1.3 million it says Sprewell owes on the mortgage. Sprewell’s firm, LSF Marine Holdings, hasn’t made its $10,322 monthly payments on time or maintained the necessary insurance on the boat, according to North Fork Bank.

The marshal seized the boat in Manitowoc, where it was in storage. Sprewell could not be reached for comment on the repossession.

The 70-foot “Milwaukee’s Best” was built in 2001 by the Italian firm Azimut-Benetti, which specializes in so-called mega-yachts. Court documents show Sprewell bought the boat in 2003.

He had to have it freed by tugboat last summer after it ran aground near Atwater Beach, just north of Milwaukee. Sprewell owns a home in River Hills, a suburb about 20 minutes north of the city.

How NBA Star Latrell Sprewell Lost All His Money

Latrell Sprewell reacts

For much of his 13-year career, Latrell Sprewell was a talented, yet controversial figure in the NBA . Known as an athletic guard/forward who can contribute on offense and defense, "Spree" was a four-time All-Star, was named to one All-NBA and All-Defensive Team each, and finished his career with an average of 18.3 points per game, according to Basketball-Reference . Unfortunately, his temper often proved to be as explosive as his game, as many fans arguably remember him most for the time he choked Golden State Warriors coach P.J. Carlesimo early in the 1997-98 season — all because he wanted him to "put a little mustard" on his passes, per CBS News .

That, however, wasn't the only reason why Sprewell lost much of the fortune he earned during his time in the NBA. How could a multimillionaire who was one of the league's finest at his position go broke just a few years after he retired from the game? Let's take a closer look.

Sprewell was suspended without pay for a year for choking incident

As the 24th overall pick in the 1992 NBA Draft, Sprewell quickly proved to be a steal for the Warriors and was fresh off his best-ever statistical season when Carlesimo joined Golden State as its head coach. As noted by The Undefeated , Carlesimo was known for his hard-nosed style of coaching, and he was described as a "bellicose and belligerent" individual who liked to stir the pot.

That also meant he shared the same temperament as Sprewell, and his dissatisfaction with the player's apparent lack of effort in practice led to the aforementioned choking incident. Sprewell was so mad at Carlesimo that after initially leaving the gym, he allegedly returned to attack his coach a second time.

Per The Undefeated , Sprewell immediately became a pariah in the aftermath of his confrontation with Carlesimo. He was seen as the poster boy for the average "overpaid, petulant, [and] violent" Black athlete, and his contract with the Warriors — where he was still owed $24 million — was voided following the public uproar. This was later overturned, but when all was said and done, Sprewell had served a one-year suspension without pay — the longest in NBA history at that point, per the Associated Press .

Spree's unusual reason for rejecting a three-year, $21M deal

Following his suspension, Sprewell went on to play for the New York Knicks and the Minnesota Timberwolves. While he wasn't as productive as he was with the Warriors, he was still an effective scorer and stopper as he switched from shooting guard to small forward.

Teaming with Kevin Garnett and Sam Cassell, Sprewell helped the Timberwolves reach the 2004 Western Conference Finals, but he followed that up with a puzzling move that had a similarly puzzling explanation — rejecting a three-year, $21 million contract extension because he had a "family to feed." At that time, he was being paid $14.6 million for what would turn out to be his final NBA season.

"Actually, through the World Vision relief program, he could feed 8.3 million people for one day. Or a village of 400 for nearly 57 years. Or [ American Idol Season 2 winner] Ruben Studdard for two weeks," Sports Illustrated's Rick Reilly quipped in November 2004.

Quite notably, Sprewell owned several vehicles that most of us can only dream of owning, including a Rolls-Royce Phantom, a customized Lamborghini Diablo, a Maybach, and a 70-foot yacht called "Milwaukee's Best."

Foreclosures, bank auctions, and lawsuits

All in all, Sprewell earned about $97 million during his NBA career, but much of that money was seemingly long gone as of February 2008, when Citizens Bank filed a foreclosure suit on the $405,000 home he purchased in his hometown of Milwaukee in 1994, according to a report from  ESPN . Court documents alleged that the former NBA star owed close to $300,000 in outstanding payments and had failed to pay his $2,593-a-month mortgage from September 2007 to January 2008.

A second home, a Purchase, New York, mansion he bought in 2000 for $2.3 million, was foreclosed on by Deutsche Bank in 2015, and it was listed for sale in 2017 for just $1.5 million, per The Journal News .

A month prior to the foreclosure of his Milwaukee home, North Fork Bank had Sprewell's yacht seized and auctioned off for the bargain price of $856,000 — or less than 60 percent of its original $1.5 million value. Apparently, his firm had failed to make timely monthly payments or maintain the required insurance, and this led to Sprewell owing $1.3 million on the boat.

Additionally, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the mother of four of Sprewell's children filed a $200 million lawsuit against him in January 2007, claiming that the retired player "broke their long-term cohabitation deal and roughed her up" the month prior.

Recent years: the Priceline ad and his current financial situation

While it's obviously stressful to lose so much money and assets in such a short period of time, Sprewell has to be credited for being able to laugh at his misfortunes. Shortly before the 2016 NBA All-Star Game, Spree teamed up with San Antonio Spurs legend David Robinson in a commercial for Priceline , where the two retired stars spoke to a young girl and shared their insights on success.

Robinson, the model athlete who delayed his NBA debut by two years due to Navy commitments, told the child that one can achieve success through "hard work and a great attitude."

Sprewell, meanwhile, saw things much differently than "The Admiral," warning the girl that success "is just failure that hasn't happened yet."

Celebrity Net Worth's page for Sprewell estimates that he is now worth $150,000 — that's definitely not a huge amount of money for a prominent ex-NBA standout. Furthermore, as Sportscasting wrote, social media users expressed concern earlier this year when he launched — and later deleted — a GoFundMe page that sought to raise $35,000 for his 1-year-old granddaughter's battle with leukemia.

Latrell Sprewell Selling Yacht to Feed His Family

Former NBA star Latrell Sprewell’s home is up for foreclosure and his yacht sold at auction to help pay off the $1.3 million he owes on the boat, according to court filings. … RBS Citizens NA, or Citizens Bank, filed a foreclosure suit last week in Milwaukee County for the $405,000 home Sprewell bought in the Milwaukee suburb of River Hills in 1994. In court documents, the bank said Sprewell owed $295,138 in outstanding payments plus interest.

And here might be the best part: the yacht Spree bought back when he was making some bank is called “Milwaukee’s Best.” Gotta love the sense of humor. Well, guess all the embarrassment he caused the league by his choking incident with P.J. back in the day has come back around and hit him in a bad way. Nothing quite says “here’s a kick to your manhood in the groin” like getting possessions seized by the government. Couldn’t happen to a better guy.

CHARLESTON – It was indeed a fight that broke Latrell Sprewell’s right pinkie – a fight with the angry sea, The Post has learned.

Sprewell told his agent Bob Gist yesterday he believes his fracture occurred while skippering his new yacht on the choppy waters of Lake Michigan. The incident occurred about two weeks before training camp. The injury that required surgery will cost him six weeks at least.

According to Sprewell, Gist said a wave smacked his plush boat and he scrambled to gain control of the distressed vessel, frantically pulling on a rope to redirect it. Apparently, Sprewell banged his hand in the course of shifting the boat’s navigational system.

Sprewell, who has been told by the Knicks to stay away from their Charleston training camp, believes he may have first irritated the pinkie area in the weight room and then the boating mishap may have resulted in the fracture.

“He was so excited, so prepared for camp,” Gist said. “He wished he would’ve known it was broken. He’s optimistic he’ll be playing before six weeks. He’s itching to get out of the cast.”

One Sprewell confidant said, “He told me he’s been busting his [butt] all summer on that boat. He’s the driver and it’s very physical, dropping anchors. It’s not like he has a captain. When I heard he had a fracture, I knew it was boat-related.”

Tuesday, Knick GM Scott Layden was peppered with questions regarding how Sprewell broke his pinkie and was even asked if he may have been in a fight. Some fractures of the fifth metacarpal are called “a boxer’s fracture” because it results from a punch. However, “a boxer’s fracture” normally occurs when someone punches something with no give, like a wall or pole.

All Sprewell told the Knicks Monday was he banged his hand a couple of weeks ago and the vagueness led to reckless speculation. Don Chaney and Scott Layden have set up a special meeting with Sprewell Monday to find out specifics.

“Spree told me they never gave him a chance to tell them what happened,” his confidant said.

Boating has replaced cars as Sprewell’s passion. Sprewell bought a yacht in May and “lived on it” this summer, according to the confidant. The boat has two bedrooms, a kitchen and living room. He often sailed from Milwaukee to Chicago.

In truth, the Knicks aren’t worried about how Sprewell hurt the hand, they were angry he didn’t report it sooner and wanted to know his thought process before deciding whether to fine him.

In their meeting, brass wants to remind him how important he is to the franchise and as such, is responsible for reporting even minor injuries in the offseason. Sprewell missed last week’s voluntary workouts and was the last Knick to report.

“New York is mentally draining as an athlete and he needs that time away to replenish his spirit,” a confidant said.

The newspaper, citing two eyewitnesses who asked not to be identified, said the New York Knicks ' star was injured when he slammed his right hand into a wall during a skirmish at a late-night party.

Agent Robert Gist acknowledged Friday that Sprewell hurt his hand aboard the luxury yacht he bought over the summer.

Sprewell underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a displaced fracture of the bone beneath his right pinkie. He will wear a cast for a month and is expected to be sidelined at least six weeks.

The Knicks were stunned when Sprewell arrived in New York on Monday with a broken hand. After initially saying Sprewell would join the team for training camp in Charleston, S.C., the Knicks said Sprewell had been told to stay in New York until the team returned.

Knicks president Scott Layden and coach Don Chaney plan to meet with Sprewell on Monday.

Gist told The Associated Press he did not speak to Sprewell about exactly what caused the injury, although the agent was quoted in detail in the Post describing how Sprewell banged his hand while shifting the boat's navigational system, frantically pulling on a rope to redirect the vessel after it was smacked by a wave.

"Quite frankly, I don't care how it happened. I care more about his recovery and the upcoming season,'' Gist said Friday.

Gist maintained that Sprewell did not realize the severity of the injury until he arrived in New York and had the hand X-rayed.

The two eyewitnesses quoted by the Post said that after they sailed on his yacht Sept. 20, Sprewell had a party while it was docked at the lakefront area in downtown Milwaukee.

An argument ensued about 2:30 a.m. after a woman Sprewell hadn't invited vomited on a carpet by the bar area. Sprewell wanted the woman to leave the boat, but her boyfriend objected.

Sprewell took a swing at the boyfriend, missed and hit a wall. Sprewell cursed in pain and asked his guests not to say anything about it, the Post said.

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More
