Bay Ship And Yacht is an example of the best of the best. They are a fantastic employer and they do amazing work. For Alamedens, Bayship And Yacht flies a bit under the radar. You really can't see their business from the roads around Alameda. But Alamedens should know, Bay Ship And Yacht contributes to the Bay Area economy and makes possible our robust, continuously growing, passenger ferry services. Have you ever wondered where tugboats get worked on? Do you have an idea what tugboats do? Without tugboats, those giant cargo ships that bring in everything we use in the United States and export all the things we grow in the Central Valley would not be able to moor alongside the dock. And without Bayship And Yacht, those tugboats wouldn't run. Bay Ship And Yacht is one of the unsung heroes of our region.

They have everything for boats and ships! Highly recommend them for their knowledge and selection of parts.

While I don't actually have a ship or a yacht (yet), it's great having Bay Ship & Yacht around. For a shipmaniac like myself, there's never a shortage of stunning vessels moored for your viewing pleasure. Forget Hollywood celebs -- there are many big-name ships that frequent BS&Y. The Balclutha, Californian, your local ferries, military ships from all eras, tugboats, luxury yachts, and even National Geographic wonder twins Sea Bird and Sea Lion have all stopped by for a visit. BS&Y is a 24-hour yard, so you can ogle the beauties day or night. Spyglass optional.

These guys are the best at what they do. Anytime I have maintenance, big or small, they do it all. 24 hours a day!! Thanks for the quality work, fellas!

Bay Ship & Yacht founders Bill Elliott and Alan Cameron step back, name Joel Welter CEO, Gerona Goethe General Manager

Bill Elliott, who during a 45-year career catapulted Bay Ship & Yacht (BS&Y) from operating out of a single, mobile shipping container known as the “Shipyard in a Box” to becoming a premiere ship repair conglomerate in San Francisco Bay, announced a new generation of leadership for the company.

Joel Welter, currently Chief Naval Architect, was named Chief Executive Officer and Gerona Goethe, currently Assistant General Manager was tapped tas General Manager. Both changes are effective March 28, 2022.

Welter graduated from Webb Institute in 1994 with a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and has been with BS&Y since 1998. 

Goethe, who attended California Maritime Academy, holds a degree in Marine Engineering Technology and has been with the company since 2000. 

Founded by Elliott in 1977, BS&Y’s steady expansion of marine refit and repair capabilities now serves a cross-section of commercial and government customers encompassing the region’s expanding ferry system, barge network, superyachts and more.  

BS&Y’s main facility is located in Alameda, Calif., along with Svendsen’s Marine & Industrial supply, employing approximately (350) craftspeople. Another facility, Svendsen’s Bay Marine in Richmond, Calif. specializes in commercial and recreational vessels.  

Vice President Alan Cameron joined Elliott’s fledging BS&Y in 1979 and currently serves as General Manager. Both Elliott and Cameron will be engaged in business development outside BSY, with the various endeavors of Bay Maritime Corp.

Bay Ship & Yacht Leadership Transition

BS&Y’s beginnings were humble though, as Elliot first operated out of a single, mobile shipping container known as the “Shipyard in a Box.”

In a transition that takes effect March 28, Joel Welter, the company’s chief naval architect, will become CEO, and Gerona Goethe, currently assistant general manager, rises to become general manager.

Vice President Alan Cameron, who joined Elliott’s fledging BS&Y in 1979, currently serves as general manager. In the future, both Elliott and Cameron will be engaged in business development outside BS&Y, according to the company.
