STUDENT YACHTING WORLD CUP

After to-day’s (Tues) racing in light wind conditions at the Student Yachting World Cup Championship at La Trinite-sur-Mere Cork CIT representing Ireland are lying second overall to a very strong Portuguese team.

Racing was held in light fluky conditions with two races sailed in the morning and, due to forecasts of wind gusting to over 30 knots, the race due to take place to-night has been re-scheduled.  The CIT team under skipper Nicholas O’Leary had a poor first race to-day finishing 9th as totally random wind shifts shuffled the fleet quite a bit.  At this point with eight races having been sailed, the Irish will  discard this 9th position as their worst to date.  The second race of the day went better for them and they were in the lead when they were pipped by the English team from Great Britain Solent University who took  first place in the last 100 metres leaving CIT second followed by the Swiss team from Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne.

The Championship is a very closely contested series in difficult weather conditions to date resulting in many protests and requests for redress some of which are still outstanding.

Provisional results to date after eight races: Portugal 19 pts, Ireland 25 pts, France (IUT de Vannes) 26 pts tied with Iraly in joint third also on 26 pts.

The Student Yachting World Cup is a competition  certified by ISAF and is organised by an enthusiastic team of students  from the Ecole Polytechnique, a  French scientific university with the Grande Surprise yachts supplied by the college.  Each crew has eight students from the same university and must include at least two girls.

World Cup 2024

The clyde, scotland, royal northern & clyde yacht club and mudhook yacht club are proud to host the 2024 8 metre world championships.

The Clyde has been intimately involved with metre class racing since the early days and it was very fitting that the centenary of the metre rule was celebrated here in 2007. It is equally fitting that you should return to help us celebrate another major anniversary. In 2024 the RNCYC will be 200 years old and the MYC a slightly more youthful at 150 years. Three hundred and fifty years of sailing history takes some beating, and we are looking forward to a big year here on the Clyde.

The Organising Authority are the Royal Northern & Clyde Yacht Club and the Mudhook Yacht Club, in conjunction with the International 8 Metre Class Association (IEMA).

Rules applied: Rules of the International 8 Metre Class Rating Rule and the International 8 Metre World It’s early days, but it is never too soon to start planning. The World Cup will take place from 18th to 24th August 2024 and we very much hope you will enter your boat and get the date firmly into your diary.

We are planning an exciting week of racing on the Upper Clyde and an entertaining social program, based at the fabulously historic club house of the Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club in Rhu.

British Eight Metre Cup

We have arranged a series of sailing regattas for our 8mR Fleet prior to the 8mR Worlds, and this will be for the British 8mR Cup, a fantastic trophy. This is a separate prize and event from the 8mR World Cup.

This allows you to bring your boats for the Scottish sailing season and keep them in the fantastic sailing waters in the Clyde and surrounding area and sail up to 4 other events in the company of other Eights.

Click here fore more information and to express interest

The clubs have hosted countless national and international Championships, all delivered to an exceptional standard. This regatta will be run by a National Race Officer, supported by experienced and dedicated personnel.

A varied race area stretches from the ‘East Patch’ off the seaside town of Helensburgh to the ‘West Patch’ situated between Gourock, Dunoon and Hunters Quay. This area would have been used for some of the original Metre racing on the Clyde. The Royal Clyde Yacht Club’s original clubhouse was situated in Hunter’s Quay. Further down the Clyde is Rothesay, on the Isle of Bute, the original base of the Royal Northern Yacht Club, and on the mainland is Fairlie, the home of Fifes of Fairlie. Here many ‘fast and bonnie’ yachts were designed and built, including many Metre yachts.

Why Visit Scotland

While in Scotland why not visit some of the exceptional historic sites / castles / museums near to Helensburgh. Enjoy the great outdoors with a game of golf or climb a Munro or spot some of Scotland’s fantastic wildlife.

Kennedy Cup

  • Date November 4-5, 2023
  • Type Cross Regional Regatta
  • Boat Navy 44
  • Scoring 1 Division

Saturday, November 4:

Kennedy Cup Day 1

10 Teams are on hand at the Naval Academy competing for the Kennedy Cup aboard Navy’s fleet of 44 foot sloops.

Despite a dismal local wind forecast for today, enough of a southerly filled in to allow for two races.

After a 40 minute AP, the wind stabilized from the south at 4-6 knots and racing got underway. Cal Maritime recovered from a poor start to come back and take the win with Coast Guard in second and Wisconsin in third.

For race 2, the wind lightened slightly but PRO Nelson Pemberton got a course set and race 2 started in 4-5 knots of wind. After a solid first race, Wisconsin demonstrated their performance was no fluke and took the win. Kings Point recovered from a 6th in race 1 to take second while Webb took 3rd.

The race committee worked hard in an attempt to squeeze in a third race but the conditions would not cooperate with big holes developing.

Competitors were sent back to the dock with the requirement that all perform a wind dance for better conditions tomorrow.

At the end of the day, Wisconsin is in first with 4 points, Cal Maritime second with 6, and KP, Coast Guard and Webb in a 3 way tie for third.

Racing continues tomorrow.

Jahn Tihansky Regatta Chairman

Sunday, November 5:

Day 2 of the Kennedy Cup turned out to be just slightly better than forecasted with enough wind to get the fleet around the race course for one race today.

At 1000 this morning, the Chesapeake looked like the millpond that had been predicted. While it would have been easy to throw in the towel early, PRO Nelson Pemberton and his RC team patiently hunted all over for wind, twice moving the race area in an attempt to get something going.

With less than 40 minutes before the race start deadline of 1400, they got a course set and a race started in a SSE wind of 4-5 knots.

Kings Point won the pin for the third race in a row which allowed them to win the left earning huge dividends with both pressure and left shift. They led the race wire to wire navigating around huge potholes of lulls and random shifts but could only wait at the finish line to see how those ahead of them in the standings would fare when the dust settled.

As it turned out, Saturday leader Wisconsin stumbled to a 7th and Cal Maritime 8th which earned KP this year’s Kennedy Cup victory! Wisconsin held on to finish second overall with Coast Guard a point back in third.

A huge thanks to our RC volunteers including Jan Richardson, Tom Stalder, Bill Museler, Dana Howe, John Van Voorhis and a bunch of our Midshipmen team members.

Thanks also to our safety officers Lynn McClaskey, Kellen Browne, Duane Geruschat, Carroll Sparwasser, Jay Butler, Dave Shaeffer, Bill White, Dan Trammell, Aron Axe and Bill Krafft.

Lastly, thanks to our jury led by Chief Judge, Dan Trammell which included John McPherson, Lynn McClaskey and Nelson Pemberton. Thankfully, there were no protests to resolve.

Big congratulations to the Mariners of King’s Point who earned the right to represent the US at the Student Yachting World Cup in 2024.

Jahn Tihansky Regatta Chair

Take a sneak peek at the biggest and most expensive boats at 2024's Palm Beach yacht show

The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.

Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.

These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

Applications Open for the 2024 Youth Match Racing Championship for the Rose Cup

student yachting world cup 2024

The Rose Cup is an invitational event open to sailors who have reached their 16th birthday but not their 21st birthday during the calendar year in which the event is held (i.e., must be born between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2008). The Championship features world-class coaching and serves as an outstanding training ground for young sailors who are passionate about match racing and focused on competing at the next level.

“We are very pleased to see the competitive group of applicants we have received to date and welcome additional applications for everyone interested,” said Ryan Davidson, USYMRC Committee Chair. “This years event at Corinthian Yacht Club is not one you will want to miss!”

Applications submitted by April 1 will receive preference. Request an invitation here:  https://form.jotform.com/240095124431143 . Competitors are asked to provide their top three match and fleet racing accomplishments over the past three years, and to write briefly about their experience racing on a 3-4 person keelboat.

Teams consist of crews of four, with at least one male and one female and a maximum crew weight of 660 pounds. Teams may be composed of members from different yacht clubs or sailing associations.

The Rose Cup started as an invitational youth match racing event in 2010. It was founded by members of Balboa Yacht Club in Newport Beach, California, and the Newport-Balboa Sailing & Seamanship Association. Its mission is to assist in the promotion of youth match racing in the United States and improve the quality of US competitors in national and international competition.

Thanks primarily to the efforts of US Sailing Match Racing Committee Vice-Chair and five-time US Match Racing Champion, Dave Perry, US Sailing made the event one of its three match racing championships, and it officially became the U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship in 2015.

This year the event begins on 22 August, with six teams , representing New Zealand, Great Britain, Switzerland, Italy, USA and France, taking part, and from 22 August 2024 they will be competing off the Barcelona waterfront, operating from their bases in the harbours of Port Vell and Port Olimpic, competing for the oldest trophy in international sport. This year’s edition, which promises to become one of the most intense editions ever, will run until October 2024, with the main visitor focus at the America’s Cup Race Village. There will also be interactive fan zones, jumbo screens, and sponsor activities. Entrance for fans is free of charge.

America’s Cup, a complex event calendar

The official calendar begins on 22 August, with the final Preliminary Regatta running until 25 August. The Louis Vuitton Cup , which decides the single Challenger, starts with the Round Robin stages from 29 August, and culminates in the Louis Vuitton Cup Final, which ends on 5 October, or until 9 October depending on weather.

The Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Match is a 7-race series starting on 12 October, between the Defender team, Emirates Team New Zealand, and the winning Challenger. The Match could end on 18 October if one team wins 7:0 and there are no race delays, or it could go on until 27 October if reserve days are used due to weather, or if the teams are evenly matched.

Interest in the event has been fuelled in recent weeks by the activities of the Defender team, along with the challengers Alinghi Red Bull Racing, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, and INEOS Britannia, the Challenger of Record, which has the right to proceed directly to the final race match. Their announcements in recent weeks focus on the AC75 yachts, remarkable examples of marine design, with crews of eight, wide-span wings, and a performance capable of reaching speeds in excess of 50 knots. NYCC American Magic and Orient Express Racing Team have opted for later launch dates and training strategies. The Challengers will take part in a series of regattas to find the yacht that will eventually race against the New Zealand team.

New this year, the Puig Women’s America’s Cup and the UniCredit Youth America’s Cup

In addition to the senior teams in the running for the main event, Barcelona will also host the inaugural Puig Women’s America’s Cup and the UniCredit Youth America’s Cup. Both these events will feature the AC40 class, boats capable of exceeding 45 knots, totally equalised so that the focus is primarily on crew talent.

The long history of the America’s Cup

The long history of this event dates back to 1851, when the schooner “America” crossed the Atlantic from New York and competed in the Royal Yacht Squadron’s regatta around the Isle of Wight, beating the best yachts in the British fleet. In 1857 the syndicate that owned the schooner renamed the trophy the America’s Cup and donated it to the New York Yacht Club as “a challenge cup for friendly competition between foreign countries.” The trophy itself, nicknamed the “Auld Mug,” an ornate vessel that is incapable of holding liquids because it is a cylindrical vessel open at both ends, was crafted by the jeweller R&S Garrard & Co., Panton Street, London. An inscription on the vessel records the first race and celebrates the victor “America”, while the name Aurora, the yacht that was second in the 1851 regatta, is not mentioned.

American boats went on to defend the trophy successfully 24 times, from 1870 until 1980, and only in 1983 did Australia became the first ever successful challenger, defeating the New York Yacht Club and taking the Cup away from America. Consequently, Fremantle, Perth, in Western Australia, was the first venue outside the United States to host the America’s Cup, in 1987. In 1995, New Zealand’s team Black Magic won the trophy, joining the short list of winners – United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Switzerland. Britain has never won. Other challengers in the past have included Italy, France, Spain, South Africa, Germany, Japan, China, and Sweden. Emirates Team New Zealand defeated Oracle Team USA in 2017, and then successfully defended the America’s Cup in Auckland in 2021 against the Italian Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team.

There is no second

Under the rules of this competition, the oldest trophy in international sports, the winner of the competition earns the right to organise the next edition, choosing the location, the date, the rules, and the design of the boats. The colourful history of the America’s Cup includes the tale of Queen Victoria’s interest in the very first 1851 regatta, when the schooner from the United States took part in the 53-mile race around the Isle of Wight.

The Queen was watching from the royal boat “Victoria & Albert”, and asked an officer, “ Are the yachts in sight? ”

The signalmaster replied, “ Only the America .”

“ Which is second? ”

“ Ah, Your Majesty, there is no second .”

Be in no doubt that the race for the 37th America’s Cup is very much on with a full complement of Barcelona-based teams setting sail early on a chilly Tuesday morning to catch a weather window whilst out. In Cagliari, the Italians were back in action for their first sail of 2024. It was a thrilling day of sailing across the board with all the teams getting well and truly back into the swing of all things AC – and at full throttle.

student yachting world cup 2024

For INEOS Britannia it was a two-boat raceday and testing session with Ben Ainslie and Giles Scott taking the wheels of their battle-hardened AC40 ‘Athena’ whilst Ben Cornish and Dylan Fletcher-Scott took control of the team’s latest AC40 ‘Sienna.’ A short mainsail trimming breakdown on Athena called for outside assistance but otherwise it was a strong four-hour session on the water after a dock-out at 8.30am into a four degree air temperature combined with an offset wave pattern of just under a metre and 11-16 knots of angry winter breeze.

The on-water recon, led by Argentinian Olympic Coach Sebastian Peri Brusa, noted that the newer boat looked more on point today saying: “Generally speaking, AC40(b) seemed more stable and consistent than AC40(a), specially on the tacks, gybes and when bearing away and heading up, while dealing with an uncomfortable off-axis north-easterly sea state.” Sir Ben Ainslie, helm on Athena, spoke afterwards about the day saying: “It was our first day out two-boating with the AC40s, good conditions, a little bit of groundswell out there but you know we had a few a few little technical issues with the boat but other than that we were able to get some good time out there and start getting a feel for the two boat sessions and what specifically we’re looking to learn out of that.”

student yachting world cup 2024

And when posed with the suggestion that ‘Sienna’ looked quicker all round, Ben confirmed as such saying: “It was a pretty confused sea out there so I think that for both boats it was just getting to grips with the conditions which was the main thing, we were trying a few different set-ups, yeah I think probably you’re right that today ‘Sienna’ was going slightly better on average and a number of different reasons for that I imagine, so would be good for us to go away and try and figure out what those were.”

student yachting world cup 2024

Much more to come from these two boat sessions but INEOS Britannia are looking good on the water with crisp manoeuvres and seemingly much more confidence in the AC40s. Ben wouldn’t be drawn on whether T6, the team’s LEQ12 test platform, would make another appearance saying: “A little bit of an unknown on that, depends how things play out with some decisions that we’re going to make in the not too distant future regards to the race boat and where we go with that so we may or may not take T6 out again.”

student yachting world cup 2024

Meanwhile over in Cagliari it was back to business for the hard-charging Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team who put on another demonstration day of high speed, up-range foiling on a near-perfect day for sailing with 15-18 knots of breeze and an almost flat sea-state. In those conditions, the Italians are just sensational to watch and as soon as they threw in a short course, the helming rotation of Gradoni/Bruni/Spithill just lit up the LEQ12 and give it everything they’ve got. A small modification was noted by the recon team, thus: ‘the port foil arm/arm stock has clearly been modified with additional volume on leading edge.’

student yachting world cup 2024

Impressive sailing over a three-and-a-half-hour session that Team Coach Jacopo Plazzi described as: “It was our first day in 2024, we wanted to start well, and it was actually a very good day out on the water. We started with a bit of testing and then we went straight away around marks. We’re planning to do a lot of racing stuff in the next period before closing the LEQ programme and this is a bit of a start, it’s been a while, we did a lot of testing in the last month so it’s been a while that we don’t practise this stuff and was good, bit windy, was nice.” Ominous form from the Italians who are really eyeing the new raceboat now and itching to get racing.

student yachting world cup 2024

Back in Barcelona, another early riser was NYYC American Magic who docked-out just before 9am and put in a solid four-hour session looking way more stable initially than yesterday. The familiar bow-down pitch was enacted, and the team throttled around, nailing their manoeuvres and bedding-in those crucial systems that will be transferred almost lock-stock onto the new boat currently in build in the USA. The only fly in the ointment was a series of gybes on the way back to base in a dying breeze that yielded a number of splashdowns and was picked up on by the on-water recon team.

student yachting world cup 2024

When asked, Michael Menninger, one of the most honest and hard-working Flight Controllers in this Cup cycle, gave a good insight into how the team are approaching Patriot saying: “I think we have to put our hands up as sailors to it a little bit I mean we’ll definitely debrief those manoeuvres probably tomorrow and see what we were doing wrong but Patriot is tough to sail when the breeze drops…whenever there’s moments where the hull is touching the water you know this hull has a hard time of maintaining that boat speed and being able to pop back up on the foils so a lot of times we’ll touchdown very briefly and then the boat kind of gets sucked in the water and we have to do a full re-build again which is tough on the cyclors but it’s something we’re battling through.”

student yachting world cup 2024

Asked if he felt it was an advantage to have Patriot in Barcelona over a dedicated LEQ12 or the AC40, Michael responded: “You’d think so, I mean I think the internal systems of these boats are very different than AC40s. I mean maybe some of the other teams on the LEQ12s are a little bit more similar inside but certainly the size of all the cylinders and the pressure needed to move those will be more similar on Patriot versus our new boat so I think as a team we’re learning a lot about the systems and hopefully when we launch the new boat later this year we will be in a good place to be sailing her well from the get go.”

student yachting world cup 2024

Alinghi Red Bull Racing also put in a big four-hour-plus session on Tuesday, bringing ‘BoatZero,’ the team’s AC75, back into commission with no maintenance issues and a thoroughly rewarding session for the young Swiss team. Keen to push into the off-axis north-easterly swell, the team opted for a long one-tack stint punching into the waves with the Flight Controllers really concentrating on pitch control and ride height as helmsmen Maxime Bachelin and Arnaud Psarofaghis drove hard. It was a solid session that Maxime described afterwards saying: “We were more working on the behaviour of the boat because it was long time without facing the waves and we used this opportunity to do a longer port facing the waves.”

student yachting world cup 2024

Summing up the day overall Maxime added: “It was very nice to have a break for the team, we came back very happy and motivated for this year, the year for the America’s Cup and we are all focused for that and yeah we had as well very good condition out there, waves again, facing the waves on port and I think was a very nice day out there, bit cold I would say, but yeah it was nice…For sure the power group will be tired tonight and this is sometimes our goal, they like to be tired, so it’s quite fun to be there and the boat was working pretty well, we didn’t need to stop for any maintenance issues so it was a very good day.”

student yachting world cup 2024

Orient Express Racing Team were also out on the water today in their one-design AC40 ahead of an expected switch to LEQ12 mode in the coming weeks with the team eyeing foil development to complement the build work well underway of their new AC75 up at the Multiplast Yard in Vannes in the Morbihan Region. Plenty of action going on with the French team who will come into the recon programme as soon as they step their AC40 out of one-design mode. Exciting times ahead.  (Magnus Wheatley)

On-Water Recon Report – Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli:  The Italian team rolled out their LEQ12 at 8:45, stepped the mast and craned in by 9:00. On the appendage configuration, the port foil arm/arm stock has clearly been modified with additional volume on leading edge.

After running the usual FCS, flap, rudder rake checks, the sailors proceeded with the sail control checks. M2-1 was placed on the deck before dock-out while at the base Chase3 and the AC40 were being unloaded from trucks. Six sailors boarded the LEQ12 and rotated in the passenger seats during the session. At 10:00 the yacht was towed out to fully hoist M2-1 paired with the J4-1.

student yachting world cup 2024

The team initially conducted straight line testing mostly downwind before marks were laid out by Chase2. The breeze was measured at 335TWA with 13-15 knots as the LEQ12 was towed up on port tack for a short upwind stint before bearing away heading to the windward gate. There, the yacht practiced a pre-start drill, killing time around the leeward gate followed by two upwind and two downwind legs before stopping again. At this stage, personnel on chase1 gathered footage on the pressure side of the starboard wing for a speculative issue. Nothing major as the yacht was towed up again at 11:45 on port tack before bearing away, executing a series of gybes and sailing on two boards downwind for a short while before heading back to the leeward gate for a quick two boards round up. Two legs followed before the yacht seemed to have some troubles while exiting a tack from starboard to port leading to a significant splash.

student yachting world cup 2024

The breeze had increased to 17-18kn from 330 TWA. Shore crew proceeded with some checks below deck and with a green light the yacht was quickly towed back on foils and a time-on-distance drill followed with additional two laps including a series of quick tacks.

After a short debrief for additional planned training manoeuvres, the yacht was towed up on starboard tack this time and the last two laps around the marks followed. At 12:40 Chase2 started recovering the marks providing the LEQ12 still the virtual targets for some last roundings.

student yachting world cup 2024

Once again, the boat looked fast & controlled in higher range breeze around the marks where the team seemed to focus especially on clean execution of all kinds of mark manoeuvres. The team docked in at 13:20 with approx. 130 minutes foiling time, approx. 24 tacks and 18 gybes.  [Michele Melis AC Recon].

On-Water Recon Report – INEOS Britannia:  INEOS Britannia craned to the water their AC40(b) ‘Sienna’ at 6:30am, that apparently was left rigged and ready the previous evening. At 7:00 am the older AC40(a) ‘Athena’ got rolled out and half an hour later it was craned to the water after stepping the mast. Both boats in full one-design configuration. Nothing in particular could be noticed, other than some works on the foil hatches of AC40(a).

The team docked out at 8:30, as planned. One-design mainsails were hoisted at 8:45 and one-design J2s followed at 8:50, on both boats, just before coming out of the harbour.

Those were the only sails used during the session.

student yachting world cup 2024

Today´s training had two parts. The first one consisted of doing some short upwind-downwind laps, at the AC race area, doing three to four tacks and gybes per leg. Generally speaking, AC40(b) seemed more stable and consistent than AC40(a), specially on the tacks, gybes and when bearing away and heading up, while dealing with an uncomfortable off-axis north-easterly sea state.

After three upwind – downwind legs, at 10:10am AC40(a) stopped and stayed heading into the wind for approximately 40 minutes with one of the team´s chase boats alongside. During this period of time, it seemed to have issues on one of the mainsail control systems. Two sailors could be identified working on the lower front part of the mainsail, while the starboard side trimmer stayed in the cockpit trying different things on the controllers.

Nevertheless, at 10:50am the training continued but with the focus on sailing in a straight-line, speed testing in between both boats, sailing longer distances. Two long downwind-upwind legs were executed in which AC40(b) was slightly faster, both upwind and downwind, performing a better VMG than AC40(a).

However, the offshore medium-winds conditions that prevailed during the day, combined with a tricky off-axis disorganized north-easterly swell, made the speed tests not highly reliable.

At 12:22pm both boats entered the port. Sails were lowered at 12:30, both boats docked at 12:45 and AC40(a) was the first of the two to be craned out of the water at 13:15 indicating the end of the day.  Sebastian Peri Brusa – Recon on INEOS Britannia

On-Water Recon Report – NYYC American Magic:  NYYC American Magic called for a pre-dawn roll-out this morning to try to take advantage of a westerly morning breeze which was forecast to fade away sharply around midday. The team’s second generation AC75 Patriot emerged from the shed at 0655 – at which time the air temperature was just three degrees above freezing – and the bundled-up shore crew had the boat rigged and launched by 0720 in plenty of time for an 0855 dock-out. Following the same routine as yesterday (Tuesday January 8) the boat was towed out of the harbour on foils and headed offshore to a rigging point around five miles from the harbour entrance and adjacent to the Barcelona airport.

With the offshore wind blowing from the west at a solid 10 knots the crew opted for the J2-5 headsail and the MN9 mainsail which were hoisted by 0930. The first flight of the day lasted 15 minutes and saw the boat fall off the foils twice – once briefly three minutes after setting off and one at the end of the session with a touch down gybe. A 15-minute break followed during which a member of the support crew came aboard with a tool bag. The second flight began at 1015 and – other than a brief touch down and take-off – lasted 45 minutes and included 13 foiling gybes and seven foiling tacks. With marginally less wind and a flatter sea state than the previous day the boat looked to be flying in a more stable mode and with its familiar characteristic bow down pitch. A 20-minute stop was made at 1100 to rotate the cyclors, change batteries, and swap to the J1.5-2 headsail as the breeze had backed off to around seven knots. A 50-minute session followed that saw the crew seemingly able to tack without issue but struggle to pull off foiling gybes downwind. Six foiling and one touch-down tacks were completed along with one foiling and seven touch down gybes. A 10-minute stop at 1207 was followed by the final session of the day as the American boat was towed-up and set off towards the harbour.

student yachting world cup 2024

Although the breeze off the airport was fading quickly, the American Magic sailors found themselves sailing into a new 8-10 knot northerly breeze as they crossed the commercial anchor field off the entrance to Barcelona’s commercial port. Five touchdown tacks were completed along with three on foils before the team took advantage of the new breeze to engage in a series of two board manoeuvres including bear aways, round ups, as well as tacks and gybes. Time was called at 1255 with the boat arriving back at the dock at 1310.

No sailing is scheduled for tomorrow Wednesday January 10.

On-Water Recon Report – Alinghi Red Bull Racing:  Alinghi Red Bull Racing rolled out Boat Zero at 09:00 for their first sailing day of 2024. Routine system checks were carried out, with no new equipment noted on deck. The M1-1R mainsail and a J1-2R jib were prepared on deck ahead of 11:30 dock-out. Joseph Ozanne and Yves Courvoisier from the simulation and R&D team observed from the chase catalyst.

student yachting world cup 2024

Stint 1 (12:15 – 12:35, 7-9kn 10° @ 12:15, 9-12kn 40-50° @ 12:35) The team began sailing in front of the W Hotel with a short upwind warmup. Two touchdown tacks were followed by a fully foiling tack, as the bouncing waves off the breakwater made for difficult sea state. The J1 jib was then swapped for the J3-1R as the wind started to increase.

Stint 2 (12:50 – 13:10, 12-15kn 30-40° @ 12:50) The team sailed upwind towards Badalona, performing six tacks, followed by a downwind leg of four gybes. The yacht nose-dived when exiting a gybe, into the offset swell. After coming to a stop, the team debriefed while GoPros were changed. Elliot Pilcher (hydraulics engineer) was also on board to review systems.

Stint 3 (13:25 – 13:45, 10-13.5kn 40-50° @ 13:25) Joseph Ozanne replaced Nico Charbonnier in the starboard guest seat. The team sailed a short upwind/downwind near the coast before setting offshore on a 4NM upwind stretch on port tack. After stopping, Joseph Ozanne was seen discussing with trimmers Yves Detrey and Nico Rolaz, as a battery change took place.

Stint 4 (14:00 – 14:15, 10-12kn 50° @ 13:55) The yacht sailed back towards the coast towards the course, which was set in front of Badalona at 50°, 1NM in length. A cyclor exchange saw Nico Stahlberg replace Théry Schir, and Joseph Ozanne was replaced by Nico Charbonnier.

Stint 5 (14:25 – 14:50, 6-9kn 65° @ 14:25) Near the land, the wind decreased. The team warmed up with a quick upwind/downwind before practicing around the course. After gybing into the pre-start box, the yacht lost flight but regained it soon after. The pre-start was restarted, but the yacht lost flight in the same way as the previous attempt, this time regaining flight sooner but touching down after the first tack post crossing the start line. The J3 jib was subsequently exchanged for the J2-2L due to the decreased wind.

Stint 6 (15:05 – 15:50, 6-8kn 55-65° @ 15:05, 8-10kn 50-60° @ 15:15) A gybe into the pre-start box was followed by another temporary loss of flight. The pre-start was attempted again and this time the team started the race at speed, tacking immediately after crossing the line. Four tacks were performed to the windward mark, with manoeuvres becoming marginal towards the top of the course, forcing the team to pinch to the mark. After clearing the mark, a touch down gybe downwind prompted the team to abandon racecourse practice and sail downwind back to base.

Sails were dropped at 16:00 in the port to conclude the day. The team spent four and a half hours on the water, with 145 minutes of sailing time. A total of 38 manoeuvres were observed, with a 68% fully foiling rate, with gybes 30% better than tacks.

‘Iconic’ Barcelona to host ‘most recognised sailing event’, America’s Cup in 2024

Barcelona has been confirmed as the host venue for the 2024 America’s Cup , the world’s oldest international yacht race.

It means that the city will be the first venue ever to host both an Olympic Games and an America’s Cup yachting event.

Barcelona’s eclectic mix of ‘history and modernity’ and a reputation as ‘one of the most iconic and attractive cities in the world’ sealed the decision for the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron , the winners of the last edition of the race.

Tradition dictates that the winning team have the right to decide on the host city for the next race. The New Zealand team retained the cup in 2021, when they had selected Auckland as the start for that year.

When deciding on the host city for 2024, other contenders had included Cork in Ireland, Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, and the southern Spanish city of Malaga .

Explaining the decision to opt for Barcelona, Grant Dalton , CEO of Emirates Team New Zealand, said that the city ‘really is one of the most recognised cities in the world, so to have the ability to host the most recognised sailing event in the world is hugely exciting.’

He went on to describe how the sport and America’s Cup event has expanded and developed in recent years and the importance of this, saying that ‘having the event hosted in a significant city such as Barcelona will allow us to propel the growth trajectory on the global sporting stage’.

The city’s bid to host the event was a combined effort of organisations from both the private and public sectors, including the Catalan government, Barcelona City Council, City Hall of Barcelona, Port of Barcelona, and Barcelona Global, an investment agency.

Also working on the bid was Barcelona & Partners , a non-profit organisation consisting of over 200 leading institutions in the city, who are aiming to make Barcelona one of the world’s best cities for talent and economic activity.

Barcelona being awarded the accolade of host venue for the race is a significant achievement, as it allows the city to be a focus for a global audience.

Speaking to Catalunya Ràdio earlier this week about the bid, Catalan Business Minister, Roger Torrent , said that ‘the America’s Cup is a very important brand’ that will help attract further investment into the region, highlighting that the event is particularly high profile with American audiences.

Explaining more about the benefits of this, Catalan president Pere Aragonés  said ‘it is a historic sporting event, which has a great projection worldwide at an international level, economically and for tourism. It is an event that will generate a return across many platforms over years and will leave a very important legacy for Catalonia’.

Barcelona’s reputation as a hub for innovation and emerging technologies, along with sustainable development, including in the nautical sector, was a key part of the city’s bid, and this was highlighted in the announcement confirming its selection as host venue.

LOUIS VUITTON 37TH AMERICA'S CUP BARCELONA

Welcome to the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup taking place between August and October 2024 in the beating heart of beautiful Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia and one of the most visited cities on planet Earth. Situated around Port Vell and along the beach to Port Olímpic, the sailing world has made Barcelona their home for what promises to be one of the most intense America’s Cups in the event’s 174-year history.

WHAT IS THE AMERICA'S CUP: THE RACE WITH NO SECOND PLACE

It is the oldest international sporting trophy – dating back to 1851 – and stands as one of the hardest sporting endeavours. The New York Yacht Club, one of the most prestigious clubs in the world, held the trophy for 132 years before losing it in 1983 to Australia. Since then, the Cup has only been won by teams from the United States, Switzerland, and New Zealand. The current Defender of the America's Cup is Emirates Team New Zealand, representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.

“Like a jewel in the sun” was how Montserrat Caballé and Freddy Mercury described Barcelona in their famous song about the city. The cosmopolitan capital of Spain’s Catalonia region–known worldwide for its art, architecture and vibrancy–is shining even brighter as preparations are well underway to welcome the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup and its teams. All the teams’ bases are located within the Port Vell area and surrounded by the America’s Cup Race Village where tens of thousands of spectators can be accommodated daily. The racecourse, just outside the port entrance breakwaters, is set in front of significant fan zones, beach viewing platforms and a hospitality area to provide the perfect vista.

WHO’S RACING: Emirates Team New Zealand, INEOS Britannia, Alinghi Red Bull Racing, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, NYYC American Magic and Orient Express Racing Team

The holders of the America’s Cup are Emirates Team New Zealand representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, but some strong competition is coming for them. INEOS Britannia, the ‘Challenger of Record’ from the United Kingdom, are in charge of the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series) to decide who will race against Emirates Team New Zealand for the trophy. The unique format of the Cup sees the Defender of the trophy automatically entitled to race in the final Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup Match whereas the Challengers will undertake a series to find the top yacht to take on the New Zealand team. The additional confirmed entries are: Alinghi Red Bull Racing from Switzerland, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli from Italy, American Magic New York Yacht Club from the USA and Orient Express Racing Team from France.

WHAT BOATS: AC75 AND AC40

The AC75s are the pinnacle of foiling monohull yachts. Created for the 36th America’s Cup, they are a technological leap ahead of typical yachts as Formula 1 is to your daily driver. With foils that lift them out of the water and enable the yachts to generate so much momentum that they sail 4x faster than the wind.

For the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup, the second generation of the AC75s will be even faster with wider foils and refinements all over. Eight crew will be aboard and some of the finest sailing talent will be charged with racing them.

The AC40s, meanwhile, are the boats used for the UniCredit Youth and Puig Women's America’s Cup events and as training vessels for the main teams competing in the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup. Smaller but no less potent, with a four-person crew, these pocket-rockets were launched to much fanfare in September 2022, and their performance has been astonishing.

Event Format

The Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Barcelona will comprise several events that will eventually culminate in the October 2024’s Match. The Preliminary Regattas will serve as warm-up races ahead of the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series), which decides who moves on and faces the Defender for the ultimate prize. The very best female and youth athletes from around the world will be thrust into America’s Cup level racing for the UniCredit Youth & Puig Women's America's Cup events, paving the pathway to the future of the America’s Cup itself.

America’s Cup 2024 dates confirmed

  • Toby Heppell
  • November 30, 2022

Racing in the 2024 America's Cup match will take place in Barcelona, Spain in mid-October, with a calendar for racing now released

student yachting world cup 2024

Despite confirmation that the 37th America’s Cup would be raced in Barcelona back in March 2022, the specific dates in which the event would take place have only been revealed today, Wednesday 30th November 2022, with racing due to start on Saturday 12th October 2024.

We knew the event would need to take place at the tail end of the year in order to avoid clashing with the Olympic Games, which will take place in the summer of 2024 in France and the America’s Cup Event Authority had stated an intention to race in the September-October window, which offers a decent range of weather, with wind speeds usually around the 9-15 knot mark.

Racing in the 37th America’s Cup Match itself, which is a best of 13 (first to seven) format will start on Saturday 12th October with two races scheduled, followed by a further two races on Sunday 13th October 2024.

Racing will then pause for two days – at the discretion of the Regatta Director and after consultation with both the Defender and the Challenger – and depending on conditions, both of these days could be used to complete two races a day. The schedule as it stands, without the use of the Monday or Tuesday, would recommence on Wednesday 16th October 2024 for one race (race 5) in the Match followed by the final of the Women’s America’s Cup, which has now also been confirmed.

The Women’s America’s Cup Regatta Final will take place straight after Race 5 on October 16th 2024, with a stated aim to provide the women’s event significant coverage and profile.

Thursday 17th October is officially not scheduled for America’s Cup racing but again, subject to the Regatta Director’s discretion and agreement with the competitors, could be allocated for two further races depending on conditions, whilst Friday 18th October 2024 is officially marked as a ‘Spare Day’ for up to two more races. Two races per day are also scheduled for Saturday 19th October and Sunday 20th October 2024, if required.

student yachting world cup 2024

As with the last America’s Cup in New Zealand in 2021, the Event Authority hopes to have racing concluded over a weekend (19th/20th October 2024), however the schedule does allow for racing to continue into the following week from the 21st October 2024 through to the 27th October 2024, on reserve days if required.

Speaking about the format announcement, Grant Dalton, CEO of America’s Cup Events Limited commented: “We are excited to confirm the dates determining the Match racing period and our huge thanks go to the Capitán Marítimo and the Port of Barcelona authority who have been so pro-active and accommodative throughout the process. This is a significant event to plan for, with safety concerns at the top of the list for both spectators and competitors.

“I think the result is going to be something pretty spectacular with racing taking place in front of the beach, along the coast from the main port entrance right along the coast, past the Port Olímpic and out further east, offering a fantastic viewing opportunity for the public to see these remarkable boats at full pace.”

The announcement of these event dates has been on the cards for some time, with the America’s Cup protocol stating that: The precise dates determining the Match Racing Period and the race schedule shall be announced by ACE on or before 30 November 2022 .

student yachting world cup 2024

Dates for the Women’s and Youth America’s Cup series (which will take place in AC40s) have yet to be finalised.

It is, however, somewhat disappointing to see only the dates for the America’s Cup match itself and the final of the Women’s America’s Cup final announced, with the Challenger Selection Series (the competition which decides which team will face Cup Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand in the America’s Cup match) still without firm dates. And it is still unclear when the rest of the Women’s America’s Cup will take place or, indeed, the Youth America’s Cup .

In order to come up with the racing area and dates for Cup racing, an agreement needed to be reached with Barcelona’s Capitán Marítimo to create a spectator area to the south of the City along Barcelona’s beachfront.

Additionally, a permanent exclusion zone for the duration of the racing has been agreed to ensure safety for both the competitors and the expected spectator boats that will take the opportunity to see the AC75s and AC40s at close range.

Although this latest announcement from the America’s Cup Event Authority states that the racing area for the Challenger Selection Series and the America’s Cup have both been confirmed in the same location, that there are not yet dates for the Selection Series implies there may still be some further conversations to be had about the exclusion zones for that, the Women’s America’s Cup series and the Youth America’s Cup too.

In a landmark move, the inaugural FIDE World Cup for young chess players will take place from June 22 to July 3, 2024, in Batumi, Georgia

This new event aims to redefine the youth chess landscape with a revamped system and offer more opportunities for young chess players.

The tournament will be held in three age groups – under 8, under 10 and under 12 – in two categories, Open and Girls, with 48 participants in each. The competition will unfold in two stages, starting with a seven-round Swiss System featuring two groups of 24 players each. The subsequent stage will witness players in the same position from each group facing off against one another, elevating the intensity and excitement of the matches.

The organizes will cover accommodation and flight costs for top qualifying players. Heads of delegations with more than four players will be provided with a full board and accommodation. Federations should refer to the invitation letter for all the details regarding eligibility for the event and support.

Federations are urged to confirm their participation by February 1, 2024, based on the 2023 World Cadets Chess Championship results. The registration deadline for this prestigious event is April 22, 2024.

The organizers are committed to delivering excellent playing conditions, with the players staying in the same hotel where the event will be taking place. On a rest day, participants can take part in several activities. These include a Delegation Coaches Blitz Tournament with a substantial prize fund of 4,000 Euros, the Chess Composition World Cup under 8, 10, 12, engaging cultural programs, and a football match between FIDE and Georgian Chess Federation.

The event will feature special prizes for top achievers across six playing categories. Each category's top three players will receive awards, including Cups, Medals, Diplomas, and gadgets such as MacBook Air 2022, iPhone 15, or an iPad (depending on placement).

In addition to these grand prizes, the first three winners of each age category and gender will receive free full board accommodation for the World Cadets Championship later in the same year, while every participant will be awarded a certificate acknowledging their participation.

"We are tremendously excited about this inaugural event, marking the very first time the World Cup is dedicated to young talents. We expect that the tournament will attract global public interest and raise global awareness of chess. Our foremost commitment is to ensure a memorable and enriching experience for players and their families in Georgia. FIDE's dedicated efforts toward promoting and nurturing chess among children remain a cornerstone of our mission, and we are steadfast in our resolve to advance this cause," said Akaki Iashvili, Chair of FIDE's Events Commission and the President of the Georgian Chess Federation.

More information about the event can be found here: wcc2024.fide.com/  as well as in the invitation letter sent to the federations.
