ALBA SAILING is Scotland’s premier independent bareboat and skippered yacht charter company – we have provided quality service for over 35 years. From our purpose built shore side premises at Dunstaffnage Marina, Oban, Argyll in West Scotland we offer a wide choice of quality yachts from 31 – 46 feet for bareboat or skippered yacht charter. Unlike many charter companies, we own the majority of the yachts in our fleet so you can be sure of not only a warm personal welcome but also of our commitment to providing you with a well maintained and well equipped yacht that you will be proud to sail.

Our base is at the heart of Scotland’s West Coast cruising grounds so the Inner Hebrides, including the Isle of Mull and the Isle of Skye, can usually be circumnavigated within one week depending on whether you use bareboat or skippered charter. Our Cruising in West Scotland page gives you a brief outline of some of the many attractions our cruising area has to offer.

We have our own Chandlery and hire shop on-site and offer a range of services including waterproof clothing hire, freshly laundered bedding and towels etc.

There is a Tourist Information Centre in Oban and they can suggest hotels and Bed and Breakfasts in and around Oban in case you would like to extend your holiday. Welcome to Scottish Yacht Charters run by David Lyle who has been a commercial skipper on the coast here for the past 25 years... The boats we have in the fleet are ideal for the area and provide an interesting selection of vessel to charter. All boat are coded for upto 60Nm away from a safe haven which allows charterers to explore all the islands off the Scottish mainland.

We are a small independent yacht charter company, operating from the West Coast of Scotland. Our base is Craobh Haven some 20 miles south of Oban, which gives access to the most spectacular yachting to be had in the British Isles. Craobh Haven and the surrounding region featured in the BBC documentary "Three Men Go To Scotland". The varied coastline and numerous islands of this area offer stunning scenery and crystal clear waters inhabited by a huge variety of wildlife, including whales, porpoises and basking sharks. Wherever you choose to make landfall, you're sure of a warm welcome ashore at one of the many harbourside restaurants, distilleries or places of historic interest.

The landscape bordering these extensive cruising grounds is beautiful and unspoilt. There are hundreds of islands and literally thousands of miles of coastline, giving plenty of scope for aspiring skippers to improve their pilotage and navigation skills. Craobh Haven itself is easily accessible by private or public transport and has plenty of safe car parking facilities as well as a chandlery, general store and the Lord of the Isles Pub, Restaurant and Hotel.

We welcome you aboard Stravaigin, our 44ft 8-berth sailing yacht that sails from Oban in Scotland. We are a small family-run business that offers sailing holidays, private yacht charters and multi-activity adventures along the stunning West Coast of Scotland, taking in the idyllic coastline, islands, secluded sea lochs, and sheltered coves.

Stravaigin is an old Scots word meaning “to wander with no particular intent”. We like to think that our name encapsules our ethos of immersive, slow adventures, exploring and discovering new landscapes, experiences, foods, cultures and creating meaningful experiences and memories that linger.

We aim to keep these environments thriving for the future by minimising our impact on the planet. Rest assured your sailing holiday will have a massively positive impact on the environment you’ll cruise through, the local communities on this coast and the natural world all around us.

Oban Yacht Charters are a new independent charter company based in the beautiful west coast town of Oban. We pride ourselves on the high quality of our boats and our excellent personal service. Let us help you experience the best the west coast has to offer from the comfort of one of our beautiful bareboat yachts.

Our fleet operates out of the North Pier Pontoons in Oban town centre – a short walk from direct rail and bus services to Glasgow.

Often called the “Gateway to the Western Isles”, Oban provides the perfect starting point for your adventures further afield. Oban boasts plenty of things to see and do. There are several large supermarkets close by for provisioning and lots of local shops/ restaurants a short walk from the marina where you will find your vessel waiting for you. Logistics couldn’t be easier.

We are situated 14 miles south of Oban, which is the ideal place from which to begin exploring the beautiful West Coast of Scotland. We aim to provide you with hassle free cruising, route advice and the local knowledge, which will allow you to make the most of your cruise. Craobh Haven is our main base for two main reasons – firstly, ease of access to the islands and secondly the facilities it provides.

Where it all began…

“At eighteen months old my family moved onto “Windchild” a 60ft schooner designed by Hurbulot. Growing up sailing with my family sowed the seed for a passion for the sea. This passion has been the foundation for my career in the sailing industry. ”

“In 2009 I qualified as a Yachtmaster from UKSA. Since then I have had the opportunity to work on several special yachts, projects and expeditions.”

Crewed Charter Work

“I have worked on various Crewed Charter Vessels during my career. I started aboard “Halcyon”, a 24m Classic built in 1929 where we had an amazing UK based sailing season. A highlight was coming to Oban and the West Coast of Scotland (little did I know I would end up settling here) in a summer of incredible weather.

I worked aboard a 28m Andre Hook designed sloop called Whirlwind. We had a busy Med season and watching Stromboli light up the night sky as it erupted will stay with me forever.

Latterly I ran a Swan 80 called UMIKO. She has been incredibly busy and we have sailed in the UK, the Med and the Caribbean. Highlights would still be West Coast cruising and an ARC where we carried the kite the whole way across the pond!

Commercial Deliveries

“My first commercial delivery was a Lagoon 40 from Florida to Tahiti, this was the first of many transits of the Panama Canal. Since then I have done several long Mediterranean and transatlantic deliveries for private owners…..

Tuition, Team Management, Racing, & Expeditions

“Whilst working as a full-time instructor for UKSA , I ran Mile-building courses on their large yachts and Skills & Drills on their small ones.

I was a skipper and instructor for a company called “Broadreach” , which aimed to widen young people's horizons through adventure. Sailing and diving were used to develop their soft and hard skills. This was very rewarding work.

“My lifelong dream to sail around the world was realised when I was selected as a Skipper for the 13-14  edition of the “Clipper Round The World Race” . I led the largest team “ OneDLL ”, to a podium position, but more importantly the crew, the sponsor and my employer were all very happy customers… Not an easy feat.

“In search of some high latitude experience, I spent a season on a vessel called “Icebird” in Antarctica. Operating in such a remote and hostile environment is a challenge and preparation is key. An unforgettable experience, which I followed with trips to Iceland and the Artic Circle as Captain of “Hummingbird” for “ Rubicon 3 ”.

“In 2015 I was offered a position as the Principal of “Team Maverick”. This project involved the build of a unique DSS-enabled prototype racing yacht in Turkey. The boat was very experimental, and it took some time to get the best out of her. We got some great results with a 1st in class and 2nd overall in the Rolex Middle Sea Race and a 1st in Class and 2nd overall in the RORC Transatlantic Race. It was my job to run the project in its entirety, everything from logistics to crew selection, training, safety management, repairs, maintenance, optimisation, sail development etc.

OC Marine -Own Boat Tuition, Yacht Deliveries, Management , Maintenance & Surveying

OC Marine has been successfully trading since 2018. Through OC Marine I have offered Own Boat Tuition, Guardianage Services, Yacht Maintenance & Management as well as Marine Surveying.

Oban Yacht Charters.

I fell in love with the West Coast of Scotland while sailing around it in 2009 on board Halcyon. This love has only deepened since moving here in 2017. Even if you have your own boat it may be hard to have the time to come and explore what Oban has to offer. I think chartering here is a great option.

My dream of starting a charter company on the West Coast of Scotland has now been realised with the purchase of our first vessel “Morning Star”. Oban Yacht Charters Ltd has been born and we look forward to welcoming you aboard.

The Firth of Clyde from Largs

Sailing in the Clyde waters is an absolute joy ! It's a lovely sheltered area with Marinas, Harbours and Anchorages to suit all.

The West Coast from Oban

Islay, Jura, Mull, Skye, The Hebrides. Superb anchorages, magnificent scenery. A great area to explore. Wonderful Scenery and fascinating wildlife.  All the best you can get.

These are known as the Small Isles. They lie Between Mull & Skye; beautiful, distinctive, remote and fascinating.

A Guide to Favourite Anchorages

Scotland offers some of the finest sailing waters in the world.

Midnight Mirage, Deja Vue, Boarding Pass, Rona, Moonsong and Lady Naomi are based at Largs on the beautiful Firth of Clyde.

Fidelio, Frolika, Glenmaginn & Morpheus are based at the “North Pier Pontoons” Oban, on the West Coast.

We offer you great access to sailing on Scotland's wonderful West Coast. We offer yachts for charter from Largs, and Oban during the Summer.

These sailing areas, the wildlife and the scenery are all breathtaking! Prestwick Airport is 28 mls  to the South of Largs and will take about 40 minutes by taxi.

Glasgow International Airport is 23 mls to the East of Largs and is a 35 minute taxi ride.

There are also good rail links from both airports.

The Firth of Clyde with its own islands and sea lochs, has many pretty harbours and quiet sheltered anchorages, with visitors’ moorings, hotels and restaurants ashore, secluded beaches, and opportunities for walking and climbing.

For the more adventurous there is easy access to the Western Isles and the Irish Coast, whether through the wonderful Crinan Canal or around the  Mull of Kintyre.

Whichever you choose - you'll enjoy a fantastic sailing holiday in some of the West Coast of Scotland's finest yachting waters. Our Owners take pride in the presentation and preparation of our their yachts and want you to have a great time and come back again.

The West Coast of Scotland is a very attractive proposition and suitable for longer charters. We have positioned Midnight Mirage to many of the Ports, Anchorages & Marinas, including Crinan, Croabh Haven, Kerrera (over the water from Oban) Arisaig and Mallaig. This year you will be able to Charter most of our boats from Largs, Oban Dunstaffnage, or further afield on the West Coast. You can included the Isle of Mull and Skye whist cruising on your travels and will really have a chance to experience the most wonderful scenery and the fascinating wildlife of this part of Scotland. One way charters from Largs are occasionally available with easy access to the West through the Crinan Canal which in it’s own right is a most scenic and enjoyable experience. It is well worth spending at least one night in the Canal, if you have the time. Sailing round the Mull of Kintyre is an option, but if the weather is poor be ready to go through the Crinan Canal. Enjoy! We have had the occasional charter where the destination or the start point has been Arisaig or Mallaig.

If you want it, and we can make it work, then it is yours ! Mallaig & Arisaig are served by rail from London & Glasgow. There is a superb sleeper service that operates from London and is great for Oban and Mallaig.
