UAE yacht builder on creating 'floating villas' for the rich in Ras Al Khaimah

Polish company sunreef has made high-end vessels for sporting stars including tennis ace nadal and f1 star alonso, yacht builders establish in ras al khaimah to cater for a new luxury market.

Yacht builders establish in Ras al Khaimah to cater for a new luxury market

A luxury yacht builder from Poland has begun manufacturing multimillion-dollar boats in Ras Al Khaimah , with the first vessels to ship out by the end of the year.

Sunreef Yachts has built high-end catamarans for more than two decades in its Gdansk factories, with buyers including tennis player Rafael Nadal and Formula One driver Fernando Alonso .

Keen to expand beyond Europe, the company’s French founder Francis Lapp chose the UAE as the base for his first overseas shipyard two years ago.

The shipyard in Ras Al Khaimah has started production of twin-hull yachts and was formally inaugurated on Monday by Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.

More than 180 staff are employed at the site. The company aims to provide jobs to more than 600 by the end of the year.

“My vision was to make something here – to show that Ras Al Khaimah is the right place for a shipyard, to be closer to Asia and Australia,” Mr Lapp told The National .

“For the future of boating, this is the best place. I did not want to have it all in Europe. To make [vessels] in Turkey or somewhere else was also a possibility. I chose this, this is the right place.”

Crafting luxury

Mr Lapp moved from Poland, his home of 30 years, to Dubai four years ago. He now travels almost every day to the Ras Al Khaimah port to supervise the production of the spacious yachts.

“When I started in Poland in 2002, Poland was not popular for super luxury yachts, only for big ships,” he said.

“We brought luxury to Poland and now we are doing the same in Ras Al Khaimah.”

The Dh100 million ($27.2 million) shipyard will cater to a growing demand for spacious yachts. Construction is already under way on a second shipyard at the site to cope with orders worth $170 million to be delivered over the next two years.

The majority of orders come from Europe, while the company also has clients from Australia, Asia and the US.

The Ras Al Khaimah shipyard will first produce midrange 44 foot to 88 foot catamarans with solar-panelled roofs, with the vessels priced between $1.5 million and $12 million.

The luxury transatlantic 140-foot yachts built in the company’s Polish shipyard cost up to $50 million.

Luxury is seclusion

Often described as floating villas, the boats are tailor-made for each client, with features including walnut wood interiors, granite kitchen and dining areas, master suites with walk-in dressing rooms and private balconies. Storage space can also be added for jet skis and kayaks.

“Luxury is not only to show the boat in front of Bulgari hotel in Dubai,” said Mr Lapp, 66. “Luxury, too, is an island, a place where you are alone.”

He said the boats allowed celebrities and sports stars such as Alonso to steer clear of the public eye.

“He has enough of show in Formula One,” Mr Lapp said. “He wants to go someplace and not be photographed, no press, nothing, to have a nice holiday.

“That’s why people are choosing our products, our catamarans, to go to someplace where you cannot go with normal boats.”

Longer trips, further afield

The time clients spent sailing has increased over the past few years, with people extending their voyages from a matter of weeks to months.

“Now clients stay two or three months on the boat in the summer, bring their family, make a long trip,” said Mr Lapp, who has sailed with his family from Monaco to Dubai.

Polish government officials believe more companies will follow Sunreef’s example and expand operations in the UAE.

The Polish Business Council in Dubai was recently inaugurated, with more companies expected to open in the Emirates.

“I feel proud. It is a symbol of our deepening economic co-operation,” said Ignacy Niemczycki, a senior official in Poland’s Ministry of Economic Development and Technology.

“It’s the first large Polish investment in the UAE and my hope is this paves the way for others.”

UAE is home

Mr Lapp plans to move his family from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah next year, once his teenage daughter heads off to study at university.

“I love Dubai and the UAE. I feel my home is here,” he said.

He wants the shipyard in Ras Al Khaimah to be used to deliver the same vessels as the Gdansk site. “Now our clients are asking us about quality and I say, ‘Yes, for sure, the quality will be the same in Ras Al Khaimah,” he said.

“We will bring this same level of quality of Poland that we did in the last 20 years to Ras Al Khaimah. I do not want to be number two. Every morning my challenge is how – in innovation, quality - how to be number one.”

UAE YACHT MANUFACTURING HUB

UAE STRENGTHENS POSITION AS YACHT MANUFACTURING HUB AS COUNTRY’S USD 61 BILLION MARITIME INDUSTRY EXPANDS The UAE is set to build on its position as one of the world’s leading international yacht manufacturing hubs as local manufacturers expand their operations, international developers relocate and the maritime industry expands with coastline developments, according to industry experts. The UAE currently ranks ninth in the world for superyacht manufacturing, with 15 projects under development, according to the 2015 ShowBoats International Global Order Book. Local and international manufacturers are set to announce a slew of new projects for the UAE at the 23rd Dubai International Boat Show. The region’s leading leisure marine event, taking place from 3-7 March of 2015, will have boats on display worth AED 1 billion according to the organisers, Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC). Dr. Khalid Al Zahed, Vice Chairman, Dubai International Marine Club Board, said: “This year’s Dubai International Boat Show will reaffirm Dubai’s status as a leisure marine hub. As the water-based lifestyle becomes increasingly popular in Dubai, we will see this sector continue to expand and grow in the future. Dubai’s commitment to excellence in everything it does will drive the marine industry to achieve new heights and bring more visitors to the city.” According to the Dubai Council for Marine and Maritime Industries (DCMMI), the total UAE maritime industry is worth more than USD 61 billion, with 386 boats above 24m built in 2014, up 8% on 2013. The fleet of yachts in Dubai has doubled since 2009 and the DCMMI predicts the creation of a national classification society – Tasneef – and the introduction of the world’s first code governing private yachts, the UAE Yacht Code, will boost the industry’s future development. Boat builders expand manufacturing activities in UAE Boosting Dubai’s position as a global maritime hub, Comar Yachts, which has produced more than 6,200 yachts to date, will relocate some of its production facilities from Italy to the UAE. The company aims to manufacture locally around 100 catamarans and powerboats per annum in the 26-46 foot range, as it looks to penetrate the wider GCC market and beyond. Comar Yachts will also announce a major global launch at this year’s Dubai International Boat Show, with the world premiere of its Comet Power Cat line of power catamarans. “The UAE has the advantage of being a major geographical hub, allowing us to extend our reach not only across the GCC but to India and south-east Asia as well. By moving production facilities here we are able to build boats, reach new markets and attract new customers more economically,” said Marco Liello, Partner, Comar Yachts. “If you look at the success of the regional yachting industry then a lot more shipyards should come to this part of the world, it’s just a question of finding the right place.” Local manufacturers are also expanding activities in line with the growth in Dubai’s maritime industry, which also aligns with Dubai’s National Innovation Strategy aiming to make the UAE one of the world’s most innovative nations within the next seven years. The UAE’s Gulf Craft is investing USD 100 million over the next five years to develop a state-of-the-art facility to build a shipyard for the manufacture of mega and super yachts within the marine district of Dubai Maritime City, a world-class maritime cluster in the heart of Dubai. Named one of the top ten superyacht shipyards in the world, Gulf Craft has played a significant role in cementing the UAE’s position as a yacht production hub, and continues to support developments that build the country’s credibility on the international marine scene. “Dubai has everything in place to become a global maritime industry hub and to be a centre of excellence for the yachting industry – there is a high degree of wealth, a commitment to the water-based lifestyle and the allure of Dubai as a brand that stands for excellence,” said Erwin Bamps, CEO of Gulf Craft. “Regulation and integration of the industry are key to establishing international credibility, and the recent announcement of the UAE Yacht Code is a prime example. With these new regulations in place, which is a first-time globally for private superyachts, the UAE is put on the map when it comes to the production of world-class vessels.” ART Marine, the Middle East’s largest 360 degree leisure yachting enterprise and one of the show’s largest annual exhibitors, is also consolidating its presence in the region with its Oman launch and reopening in Egypt. “We are focused on continuing to forge strategic partnerships and cementing our presence in the countries of the region we believe in, not only for the superyacht market but also for people who want to enter this lifestyle with a smaller, affordable boat. The Dubai International Boat Show is the best platform for us, to announce new projects, new partnerships and the ongoing collaborations with our partners in this ever challenging but promising market,” said Gregor Stinner, CEO of ART Marine. The company will also be signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Kleindienst Group – developer of the Heart of Europe at The World Islands, on an exciting yet-to-be-announced cooperation of the two companies at several levels for the unique archipelago, on the second day of the show. Another UAE-based luxury yacht manufacturer, Al Shaali Marine, will unveil its new USD 5.45 million AS100 model superyacht at the Dubai International Boat Show, which it describes as the first of its kind designed and manufactured in the Middle East. “The UAE’s embrace of innovation and best-in-class technology, which has seen it develop in so many other areas, will help it to become the global market leader in the yachting industry,” said Sultan Al Shaali, CEO of Al Shaali Group. “The Dubai International Boat Show will allow us to showcase our offerings to a wider market and help to continue to develop Dubai’s maritime industry.” With potential first-time boat owners set to make up a large number of the expected visitor turnout, the Dubai International Boat Show has ensured a wide range small to medium sized builders will be participating to showcase a range of crafts that also include speed boats, jet skis, quad skis and other marine leisure products. On display are pleasure craft from return exhibitors Delma Marine, Macky Marine and Ocean Boats, as well as boats in the same range from new show entrants Brodie Boats, Dar Al Tawasel Services, Mercan Yachts, Revolver Yachts and Rio Yachts. With over 800 companies and brands from 54 countries exhibiting at this year’s Dubai International Boat Show, tens of thousands of visitors, from more than 120 countries are expected to attend. New country participants in 2015 include Djibouti, Indonesia and Luxembourg, while Italy and the USA return as top participating countries, and the event will see 45 global and regional launches over the five days of the show. New and returning show features draw range of leisure marine enthusiasts New show features include dedicated sections for DIBS Sailing, DIBS Fishing, and DIBS Water Sports – industry areas supporting strong sales growth over the last several years as Gulf states increasingly develop planned communities around an active, on-water lifestyle. The DIBS Sailing section is designed as an interactive zone, where enthusiasts – from experienced sailors to first-timers – can see boats, brands, equipment and suppliers from across the globe in a relaxed environment. The DIBS Fishing sector will meet the needs of even the most expert fisherman, allowing them to get specialist technical advice from experts and see the latest technologies and products. DIBS Water Sports is an exciting new show zone dedicated to all related things, from kayaking, canoeing, jet skiing, and paddle boarding to surfing, kite surfing, and wind surfing, with a dedicated testing pool for water sports enthusiasts Show sectors for this year include Marina Display, Superyacht Life Area, Outdoor Display, Marine Luxury and Lifestyle, Equipment Services and Supplies (ESS), with popular show features including the Supercar Promenade and the Retail Village returning to the show. The Middle East Yachting Conference – the region’s largest maritime networking session – will bring together some of the leading industry experts, region’s top boat manufacturers, marina operators, in a collaborative knowledge platform. In addition, Marine Talks will offer leisure marine enthusiasts the chance to glean the latest tips, trends and tricks from experts in fishing, diving, sailing and watersports. The UAE has a strong maritime heritage of dhow construction, ocean commerce, fishing and pearl diving and this tradition has continued with the manufacture of contemporary, state-of-the-art leisure crafts for today’s boating market. The UAE Inspired Pavilion is back again with a range of local small to medium boat builders exhibiting this year. The unique pavilion provides an ideal platform for small-to-medium UAE boat builders to increase market exposure. Dive Middle East Exhibition (DMEX), held in association with Emirates Diving Association, returns with a 42% increase in exhibiting companies and brands. “As the region’s maritime industry expands, and as the UAE consolidates itself as a hub for boating and manufacturing, it is important that the Boat Show evolves and develops alongside it,” said Trixie LohMirmand, Senior Vice President of DWTC. “By expanding the reach of the Dubai International Boat Show into wider areas of the marine leisure lifestyle we can better serve the needs of exhibitors and the desires of our visitors,” she said. The Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss) will again unite to represent the world’s most leading superyacht builders, bringing them together in one dedicated platform at the Superyacht Life Area of the show’s Marina Display. Key returning partners include Italian luxury watch brand Officine Panerai, Mercedes Benz and Emirates Diving Association. Bombardier, the world’s only manufacturer of both planes and trains, returns as a Supporting Partner. A vast array of entertainment and show-stopping prizes are available to marine leisure enthusiasts and members of the public this year.

UAE luxury yacht builder Gulf Craft makes return journey into lucrative Asia markets

Chairman Alshaali is opening up international markets – and wants to get into boat finance

Stock-Gulf-Craft-Majesty-1

Dubai: One of the biggest names in the Middle East’s leisure yachting industry, UAE’s Gulf Craft is heading back to primed-for-growth South Asian markets, signing up new dealerships there.

“We had been a bit absent from Asia after COVID, and we wanted to set that right,” said Mohammad Alshaali, Chairman of the company, which has a massive boat yard in Umm Al Quwain and also in the Maldives.

Get exclusive content with Gulf News WhatsApp channel

“That’s because right after COVID, our presence in Southeast Asia kind of stopped. We have signed a dealer in Indonesia and Malaysia, and renewed existing activities in Thailand. There’s Hong Kong too – these are all markets where we can be selling our boats.”

Stock - Mohammed Hussein Alshaali, Chairman of Gulf Craft

Asia has no shortage of people with ample wealth, and the sort who will not be dwelling too much on spending millions of dollars on luxury yachts and all the trappings of a lifestyle to suit that. Real estate developers too have been busy creating marinas to support any uptick in demand for such ocean plying vessels.

Monaco, Miami and more

For Gulf Craft, the last two years have been about finding its overseas moorings. First, there was the chase for visibility in the European marina and yachting circuit, including showing off its boats in Monaco. Then came carefully planned exposure in Miami and that helped with the North American presence. All this while building and selling pricey yachts to a well-heeled global clientele.

“We had another good year in 2023, and international markets did help with that,” said Alshaali. “Our boat yards in the UAE and Maldives have been busy throughout.”

This is why getting its presence back on board in Far East markets is vital. The sheer breadth of a geographic presence has its benefits, and that’s what Gulf Craft is clearly angling for.

Creating a ‘group’

This week, the company confirmed creating a holding company structure, whereby it will be now known as ‘Gulf Craft Group’.

Again, for a next level of growth, such a move was deemed essential. “We have multiple brands, multiple markets we are in, and it was felt time was right to group all activities under a unified structure,” said the Chairman.

“We can better manage our network of international dealerships this way. And it does help with what we are planning to get into.”

More than making and selling boats

Creating the group is also about getting into roles that the company has not been into. “New things are part of the plan – we want to be in a position to offer long-term loans for customers,” said Alshaali. “This was something we could not do in the previous structure, where all that we focused on was building the best boats that we could put to water.

“But new ways are a must for the company, there is no getting away from that. Apart from customer financing, we will also try and get a shot at supporting chartering activities. Now, that’s an area we find there are great possibilities to be had. In the future.”

Clearly, Alshaali and Gulf Craft Group have set sights on how to chart a new growth journey…

Asia’s Leading Yacht Builders 2020 (Part 2 of 2): S.E. Asia, UAE

Yacht Style profiles yards in Southeast Asia and the UAE in the second and final part of Issue 52’s cover story on Asia’s top yacht builders.

In Southeast Asia, Thailand has several smaller yacht builders, Malaysia is home to iconic Grand Banks and sister brand Palm Beach, while Indonesia is best known for the production of high-end phinisis, many of which have been successfully developed for luxury charter cruises around the archipelago.

Bakri Cono Shipyard, near Pattaya, has experience of producing its own solar-powered catamarans and is now busy producing the first units of the Silent 60

Bakri Cono Shipyard, near Pattaya, has experience of producing its own solar-powered catamarans and is now busy producing the first units of the Silent 60

In Thailand, the Bakri Cono shipyard outside Pattaya specialises in solar technology and is enjoying a new lease of life as builder of the new Silent 60 powercat from Silent Catamarans, a leading developer of oceangoing solar-electric production catamarans.

The Austrian company has outsourced production of its range to four builders in three continents and in February announced six sales of the Silent 60, which is designed and engineered by Albert Nazarov, developing upon the 55 produced in China that established the brand.

Bakri Cono is already building multiple units of the Silent 60 and is scheduled to launch the first this summer, while also building its own Heliotrope 70.

Silent Catamarans has outsourced production of its 60 to Bakri Cono

Philippe Guenat, Bakri Cono’s General Manager, said: “Since 2013, Bakri Cono has specialised in the use of solar panels, electrical engines and vacuum infusion with sophisticated resin. For a while, the market didn’t realise the advantages, but by 2019 these technologies made us a real leader as the yachting world woke up.”

Last year, Bakri Cono – which has a relationship with Camper & Nicholsons in Asia – delivered a Heliotrope 48 powercat to a Hong Kong client, while in 2018 an earlier hull of the same model exhibited at the Sydney show.

Founded in 2004, Bakri Cono was originally situated in Ocean Marina, but since 2015 has operated out of its privately owned 20,800sqm facility in the PMG Marine Complex in Rayong. About 70 staff work at the site, which has a 3m-deep pool able to test yachts up to 80ft, direct sea access and its own launching pier.

There have also been many positive developments at Grand Banks Yachts including a 10-year high order book of S$63.9 million (about US$45 million), which the Singapore-listed company announced in mid-February.

The Grand Banks Yachts facility in southern Malaysia, which produces Grand Banks and Palm Beach models, has completed a four-year expansion and upgrade

The builder has also completed a massive four-year expansion and overhaul of its main production facility in the southern state of Johor, which included hiring over 180 new workers and investing in training, machinery and tooling, robotics and R&D.

New machinery at the 51,000sqm facility in Pasir Gudang includes two eight-axis CNC robots for rapid prototyping and developing tooling in-house.

The company – which acquired Australia’s Palm Beach Motor Yachts in 2014 – continues to produce new models thick and fast, having grown to over 800 staff across its sites in Johor, Sydney and Stuart, Florida, a facility it bought in 2018.

The Grand Banks 85 is scheduled for completion by year-end

Grand Banks was planning to stage the world premiere of the GB54 at the Palm Beach show in Florida after already securing early sales, and hopes to launch its flagship GB85 by the end of the year. The two models follow the GB60, launched in 2017.

The company also recently announced seven sales of the Palm Beach PB70, which only debuted at Fort Lauderdale last November and tops a PB range including 42, 45, 50, 52, 55 and 65 models. In February, Palm Beach staged the world premiere of the GT60 at the Miami International Boat Show, a year after the GT50 Open debuted at the same event.

“The GT60 is an absolute dream result that our team worked tirelessly on perfecting for the past 12 months,” said Mark Richards, CEO of Grand Banks Yachts, which has five new products in development for release over the next two years.

“To have such a beautiful boat wrapped around a twin-engine system that out-performs similar-sized competing products that use three engines or twice the horsepower is a truly remarkable achievement.”

One of Asia’s most iconic yacht-building brands, Grand Banks was founded in Hong Kong in 1956 and relocated to Singapore in 1973 before moving to Malaysia.

Founded in Indonesia, Yacht Sourcing is a multi-faceted yacht services company that owns its own shipyard in Bira, Sulawesi, where about 80 craftsmen build and refit traditionally designed wooden yachts with high-end fittings and furnishings for luxury charters.

The most famous yacht to emerge from the 4,000sqm waterfront facility is the 55m, nine-cabin Prana by Atzaro , which launched in mid-2018 and has become one of Indonesia’s most successful charter superyachts.

Last year’s launches included the 27m Maggia and the 47m phinisi Maj Oceanic , which is being fitted out for delivery to The Maj Group. Previous builds include the 23m Kelana and 40m Ocean Pure , while the 16m Anne Judith and 34m Tiger Blue have had refits at the yard.

Ongoing builds include the 50m Vela , set for completion later this year. Yacht Sourcing co-founder Boum Senous describes the 164ft sailing yacht as a “phinisi-schooner fusion, with a very specific interior that will make it one of a kind”.

Now also working on one 30m and two 45m projects, Yacht Sourcing is looking to expand the facility so it can accommodate four builds at once. Continuing to develop sustainable, eco-friendly propulsion solutions, the company is also seeking to establish an international dealer network for its new builds.

FLYING HIGH IN THE EMIRATES

In the west of Asia, Gulf Craft – which boasts 1,300 employees across two facilities in the UAE and another in the Maldives – recently launched its first Majesty 120 and will follow with the flagship Majesty 175 as it develops the larger end of its vast product range.

As well as the Majesty Yachts brand, Gulf Craft produces the long-range Nomad Yachts, Oryx sport cruisers, and Silvercraft fishing and leisure boats at its main 90,000sqm facility in Umm Al Quwain.

Nomad rose in prominence last year with its new SUV Collection, launching the 65 SUV, 75 SUV and 95 SUV models, all featuring semi-displacement hybrid hulls.

Traditionally the biggest exhibitor at the Dubai International Boat Show, Gulf Craft usually has a strong presence at leading boat shows in Europe and last autumn showed four yachts at Cannes and six at Monaco, also displaying boats at the likes of Southampton and Genoa.

An occasional exhibitor at shows in Asia and Australia, Gulf Craft made a big leap last year when it made its US show debut at Fort Lauderdale with two superyachts, and this year’s calendar includes both Miami and Palm Beach.

Increasingly focused on technology and sustainable solutions for its range of yachts from 36-175ft, Gulf Craft is building its first hybrid model, while the new Majesty 120 uses electricity for all power requirements except engines and generators.

Gulf Craft’s leadership is also undergoing a period of transition. After Gregory Yeakle’s role as CEO was absorbed by co-founder and Chairman Mohammed H. Alshaali last year, this year began with the appointments of his daughter Abeer Alshaali as Acting CEO after almost six years as Executive Management Officer, Nizar Tagi as CCO and Paul Gray as COO.

Also ‘Made in UAE’, the 40-knot Foiler is produced by Enata, one of the Middle East’s leading composites manufacturers. Founded by French entrepreneur Sylvain Vieujot, Enata builds the high-tech 10m yacht in its own 7,000sqm facility, which includes marine, aerospace and architecture divisions.

Since unveiling a prototype at the Dubai show in 2018, Enata has continued to develop the ‘The Flying Yacht’, which has four hydrofoils that automatically lift it 1.5m above the water at 18 knots.

The 2020 version of the Foiler, the ‘flying yacht’ made in the UAE by Enata

Last year, Enata introduced a forward cockpit with a joystick, while the 2020 update includes 54 new smart sensors located across the yacht’s operational platform that pick up data including wheel positioning, port and starboard foil angles and pressure, exhaust temperature, and propulsion performance and stability indicators.

“The technology upgrades that the Foiler has received for 2020 are truly groundbreaking,” said Alois Vieujot, Enata’s Manager. “Never before have we seen such innovations that will continue to improve a yacht owner’s experience day in, day out – both in ways that they can see and feel, and those that happen in the background. Enata has dared to dream big with these new smart sensor and AI features, and we feel the investment has paid off.”

At the same time as Asia’s yacht builders expanding and invest in high-tech facilities and R&D, international brands are increasingly choosing to build in the region or outsource to existing shipyards, all helping yachts ‘Made in Asia’ go from strength to strength.

United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates is situated in the Southeast of the Arabian Peninsula, also known as the UAE. Made up of the sparkling gems of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al-Quwain, and Fujairah, and the seventh emirate, Ras Al Khaimah.

Abu Dhabi &   Dubai  Magic

The UAE capital Abu Dhabi offers an authentic taste of the UAE. Offering world-class luxury, cutting-edge marinas and natural beauty like no other, the region's city lanscapes and desert sand dunes offer the perfect antithesis on a superyacht escape. From the iconic Corniche Bay offers powder white sands across the glittering city while the natural beauty of the region boasts an allure of its own. The Eastern Mangrove National Park offers the ultimate retreat  into natural wilderness, while Jubail Mangrove Park offers another respite into the nature's arms. Unmissable landscapes include the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque perfect for architectural lovers to marvel at its whitewashed beauty and gold accents. Whether petting camels, falconry or stepping back in time to its historical quarters the authentic beauty of the UAE can be found here, with nothing being compromised for luxury superyacht travellers.

Dubai is a destination with luxurious opulence and larger life experiences. Whether it's the largest building in the world, golden sand dunes and the eagerly anticipated Dubai Marina, there is nothing this glossy region doesn't have to offer. Whether shopping till you drop at the Dubai Mall, staring at the awe-inspiring Dubai’s Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, or being captured by the old-town allure of Dubai Creek, there is nothing this superyacht destination doesn't have to offer.

Gems of the Middle East

While Abu Dhabi and Dubai may be the better known Emirate members, there are also a glistening set of gems aching to be discovered. Ajman is one of them. The smallest of the seven Emirates and centrally located on the western coast of the UAE invites visitors to explore old forts,  diverse artifacts and the iconic Ajman Beach. Fujairah is another jewel of the UAE. Boasting two large cities, that of Diba and Fujairah City, the main attractions in these bustling commercial centres are the buzzing souks and the café’s serving mouthwatering dishes home to the region. For azure seas and pristine sand beaches there is  Ras al-Khaimah where visitors can gaze at the imposing line of the Hajjar Mountains in the distance.

Next there is Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain,  its architectural delights such as the mosque of Qanat al Qasba are a sight to behold. Umm Al Quwain and its lush coastal mangroves are another example of the UAE's hidden treasures. Perfect for exploring a fertile oasis of natural beauty, and bespoke activities such falconery, camel racing and dhow building, it is a must visit.

Iconic yachts: Inside the build of 162m superyacht Dubai

Related articles, superyacht directory.

The creation of the iconic yacht Dubai was far from straightforward, with the build changing hands three times. Dubai was the largest yacht in the world by volume at the time of her build, with a gross tonnage of 12,488GT. She was originally intended for one royal family but went on to be used by another royal entirely. Commissioned by the Sultan of Brunei’s brother, Prince Jefri Bolkiah, Dubai started her life in Germany with naval architecture developed by Blohm+Voss (now part of Lürssen Yachts ), while design came from the UK’s Winch Design . In 1998, the project rolled to a standstill, with work completed on only the steel hull and part of the aluminium superstructure. The project was lying on a covered floating dock at the Blohm+Voss yard, and liquidators went out into the market to find potential buyers.

Her name gives the next part of the story away: the partially built yacht was sold to the Dubai government. “Once Jefri fell out with his brothers, his assets were seized, including the yacht which was at early stage of construction,” explains Kostis Antonopoulos, the former managing director of Platinum Yachts, which eventually oversaw the build of Dubai . “In fact, at that time I was working at SETE of Latsis group and we offered for the project, but Dubai offered more and they got it.”

Initially, the Dubai government assigned the build project to Karam Sadikoglou in Turkey. The dock, partially built yacht and containers holding equipment such as main engines and generators were sent to Sadikoglou’s facility in Turkey. However, progress was slow, and the Dubai government demanded the project be transferred to the UAE. With progress still slow and costs skyrocketing, Sadikoglou left the project. Antonopoulos was brought in to finish the build under the banner of Platinum Yachts , a subsidiary of Dubai World. The project had almost 800 people working on it, not including the hundreds of subcontractors. Antonopoulos’s job wouldn’t be an easy one – he had to reorganise the structure of the build team, restore confidence in the project and gain the confidence of the Palace. Sultan bin Sulayem, the chairman of Dubai World, served as the in-between for the owner and yard.

  • Iconic yachts: Inside the story of Lürssen's 114.5m superyacht Pelorus

“The design of Dubai was quite ahead of its time, and although she had an enormous size the design did not flirt at all with the shapes of cruise ships,” says Antonopoulos. “And except for the hull, the rest was built and outfitted by people who had no idea what a yacht looked like.” Antonopoulos flew employees to the Monaco Yacht Show so they could see the details that make a superyacht. “It was great experience for them and a quantum leap to their knowledge and understanding,” he says.

  • Iconic yachts: Inside Lürssen's 90.1m eco explorer yacht Ice

The interior design was completed in-house by Platinum, and most of the build-out was by local contractors in Dubai. “The brief was simple: the owner wanted a floating Burj Al Arab – and he got it,” says Antonopoulos of the colourful interior which he describes as an “attack” on the senses. There are many custom details, such as the handmade tiles in the swimming pool, which are lit up by embedded optical fibres. Her massive volume afforded space for 48 guests and 88 crew. Dubai also had a cinema , disco, helideck , and a garage holding a submarine and a variety of toys.

  • Iconic yachts: Inside the design journey of the 138 metre Lürssen superyacht Rising Sun

As Dubai was built for a royal, security was a priority. “I asked a computer security firm to hack the yacht’s network , and while we thought that we had a very secure ship, the guys hacked it in 30 minutes! Of course, we redesigned the security,” says Antonopoulos. Another day, the owner came on board and discovered the lower decks did not have a clear GSM signal, so ceilings had to be ripped apart to add repeaters. Challenges to make the yacht SOLAS compliant were resolved by sending materials for lab tests to obtain class approvals.

Antonopoulos, who currently serves as managing director of Samos Steamship Co, looks back fondly at his time working on the build of the iconic yacht Dubai . “I enjoyed building a really good team,” he says. “When I arrived, the people in the project were working in isolation and there were competing teams… I managed to bring them together and make them understand that by cooperation and teamwork we can not only achieve successful completion of the yacht but we can also enjoy our time together!”

  • Iconic yachts: Inside the story of Lürssen's legendary 98m Carinthia VII

It’s been quite a while since the royally iconic yacht Dubai was finally launched in 2006, but Antonopoulos says she stands the test of time. “I think her design is timeless and she can even be considered a classic now.” Dubai sails under the UAE flag and is known to be an active yacht, recently spotted cruising in the waters off her namesake city.
