UAE YACHT MANUFACTURING HUB

UAE STRENGTHENS POSITION AS YACHT MANUFACTURING HUB AS COUNTRY’S USD 61 BILLION MARITIME INDUSTRY EXPANDS The UAE is set to build on its position as one of the world’s leading international yacht manufacturing hubs as local manufacturers expand their operations, international developers relocate and the maritime industry expands with coastline developments, according to industry experts. The UAE currently ranks ninth in the world for superyacht manufacturing, with 15 projects under development, according to the 2015 ShowBoats International Global Order Book. Local and international manufacturers are set to announce a slew of new projects for the UAE at the 23rd Dubai International Boat Show. The region’s leading leisure marine event, taking place from 3-7 March of 2015, will have boats on display worth AED 1 billion according to the organisers, Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC). Dr. Khalid Al Zahed, Vice Chairman, Dubai International Marine Club Board, said: “This year’s Dubai International Boat Show will reaffirm Dubai’s status as a leisure marine hub. As the water-based lifestyle becomes increasingly popular in Dubai, we will see this sector continue to expand and grow in the future. Dubai’s commitment to excellence in everything it does will drive the marine industry to achieve new heights and bring more visitors to the city.” According to the Dubai Council for Marine and Maritime Industries (DCMMI), the total UAE maritime industry is worth more than USD 61 billion, with 386 boats above 24m built in 2014, up 8% on 2013. The fleet of yachts in Dubai has doubled since 2009 and the DCMMI predicts the creation of a national classification society – Tasneef – and the introduction of the world’s first code governing private yachts, the UAE Yacht Code, will boost the industry’s future development. Boat builders expand manufacturing activities in UAE Boosting Dubai’s position as a global maritime hub, Comar Yachts, which has produced more than 6,200 yachts to date, will relocate some of its production facilities from Italy to the UAE. The company aims to manufacture locally around 100 catamarans and powerboats per annum in the 26-46 foot range, as it looks to penetrate the wider GCC market and beyond. Comar Yachts will also announce a major global launch at this year’s Dubai International Boat Show, with the world premiere of its Comet Power Cat line of power catamarans. “The UAE has the advantage of being a major geographical hub, allowing us to extend our reach not only across the GCC but to India and south-east Asia as well. By moving production facilities here we are able to build boats, reach new markets and attract new customers more economically,” said Marco Liello, Partner, Comar Yachts. “If you look at the success of the regional yachting industry then a lot more shipyards should come to this part of the world, it’s just a question of finding the right place.” Local manufacturers are also expanding activities in line with the growth in Dubai’s maritime industry, which also aligns with Dubai’s National Innovation Strategy aiming to make the UAE one of the world’s most innovative nations within the next seven years. The UAE’s Gulf Craft is investing USD 100 million over the next five years to develop a state-of-the-art facility to build a shipyard for the manufacture of mega and super yachts within the marine district of Dubai Maritime City, a world-class maritime cluster in the heart of Dubai. Named one of the top ten superyacht shipyards in the world, Gulf Craft has played a significant role in cementing the UAE’s position as a yacht production hub, and continues to support developments that build the country’s credibility on the international marine scene. “Dubai has everything in place to become a global maritime industry hub and to be a centre of excellence for the yachting industry – there is a high degree of wealth, a commitment to the water-based lifestyle and the allure of Dubai as a brand that stands for excellence,” said Erwin Bamps, CEO of Gulf Craft. “Regulation and integration of the industry are key to establishing international credibility, and the recent announcement of the UAE Yacht Code is a prime example. With these new regulations in place, which is a first-time globally for private superyachts, the UAE is put on the map when it comes to the production of world-class vessels.” ART Marine, the Middle East’s largest 360 degree leisure yachting enterprise and one of the show’s largest annual exhibitors, is also consolidating its presence in the region with its Oman launch and reopening in Egypt. “We are focused on continuing to forge strategic partnerships and cementing our presence in the countries of the region we believe in, not only for the superyacht market but also for people who want to enter this lifestyle with a smaller, affordable boat. The Dubai International Boat Show is the best platform for us, to announce new projects, new partnerships and the ongoing collaborations with our partners in this ever challenging but promising market,” said Gregor Stinner, CEO of ART Marine. The company will also be signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Kleindienst Group – developer of the Heart of Europe at The World Islands, on an exciting yet-to-be-announced cooperation of the two companies at several levels for the unique archipelago, on the second day of the show. Another UAE-based luxury yacht manufacturer, Al Shaali Marine, will unveil its new USD 5.45 million AS100 model superyacht at the Dubai International Boat Show, which it describes as the first of its kind designed and manufactured in the Middle East. “The UAE’s embrace of innovation and best-in-class technology, which has seen it develop in so many other areas, will help it to become the global market leader in the yachting industry,” said Sultan Al Shaali, CEO of Al Shaali Group. “The Dubai International Boat Show will allow us to showcase our offerings to a wider market and help to continue to develop Dubai’s maritime industry.” With potential first-time boat owners set to make up a large number of the expected visitor turnout, the Dubai International Boat Show has ensured a wide range small to medium sized builders will be participating to showcase a range of crafts that also include speed boats, jet skis, quad skis and other marine leisure products. On display are pleasure craft from return exhibitors Delma Marine, Macky Marine and Ocean Boats, as well as boats in the same range from new show entrants Brodie Boats, Dar Al Tawasel Services, Mercan Yachts, Revolver Yachts and Rio Yachts. With over 800 companies and brands from 54 countries exhibiting at this year’s Dubai International Boat Show, tens of thousands of visitors, from more than 120 countries are expected to attend. New country participants in 2015 include Djibouti, Indonesia and Luxembourg, while Italy and the USA return as top participating countries, and the event will see 45 global and regional launches over the five days of the show. New and returning show features draw range of leisure marine enthusiasts New show features include dedicated sections for DIBS Sailing, DIBS Fishing, and DIBS Water Sports – industry areas supporting strong sales growth over the last several years as Gulf states increasingly develop planned communities around an active, on-water lifestyle. The DIBS Sailing section is designed as an interactive zone, where enthusiasts – from experienced sailors to first-timers – can see boats, brands, equipment and suppliers from across the globe in a relaxed environment. The DIBS Fishing sector will meet the needs of even the most expert fisherman, allowing them to get specialist technical advice from experts and see the latest technologies and products. DIBS Water Sports is an exciting new show zone dedicated to all related things, from kayaking, canoeing, jet skiing, and paddle boarding to surfing, kite surfing, and wind surfing, with a dedicated testing pool for water sports enthusiasts Show sectors for this year include Marina Display, Superyacht Life Area, Outdoor Display, Marine Luxury and Lifestyle, Equipment Services and Supplies (ESS), with popular show features including the Supercar Promenade and the Retail Village returning to the show. The Middle East Yachting Conference – the region’s largest maritime networking session – will bring together some of the leading industry experts, region’s top boat manufacturers, marina operators, in a collaborative knowledge platform. In addition, Marine Talks will offer leisure marine enthusiasts the chance to glean the latest tips, trends and tricks from experts in fishing, diving, sailing and watersports. The UAE has a strong maritime heritage of dhow construction, ocean commerce, fishing and pearl diving and this tradition has continued with the manufacture of contemporary, state-of-the-art leisure crafts for today’s boating market. The UAE Inspired Pavilion is back again with a range of local small to medium boat builders exhibiting this year. The unique pavilion provides an ideal platform for small-to-medium UAE boat builders to increase market exposure. Dive Middle East Exhibition (DMEX), held in association with Emirates Diving Association, returns with a 42% increase in exhibiting companies and brands. “As the region’s maritime industry expands, and as the UAE consolidates itself as a hub for boating and manufacturing, it is important that the Boat Show evolves and develops alongside it,” said Trixie LohMirmand, Senior Vice President of DWTC. “By expanding the reach of the Dubai International Boat Show into wider areas of the marine leisure lifestyle we can better serve the needs of exhibitors and the desires of our visitors,” she said. The Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss) will again unite to represent the world’s most leading superyacht builders, bringing them together in one dedicated platform at the Superyacht Life Area of the show’s Marina Display. Key returning partners include Italian luxury watch brand Officine Panerai, Mercedes Benz and Emirates Diving Association. Bombardier, the world’s only manufacturer of both planes and trains, returns as a Supporting Partner. A vast array of entertainment and show-stopping prizes are available to marine leisure enthusiasts and members of the public this year.

Iconic yachts: Inside the build of 162m superyacht Dubai

The creation of the iconic yacht Dubai was far from straightforward, with the build changing hands three times. Dubai was the largest yacht in the world by volume at the time of her build, with a gross tonnage of 12,488GT. She was originally intended for one royal family but went on to be used by another royal entirely. Commissioned by the Sultan of Brunei’s brother, Prince Jefri Bolkiah, Dubai started her life in Germany with naval architecture developed by Blohm+Voss (now part of Lürssen Yachts ), while design came from the UK’s Winch Design . In 1998, the project rolled to a standstill, with work completed on only the steel hull and part of the aluminium superstructure. The project was lying on a covered floating dock at the Blohm+Voss yard, and liquidators went out into the market to find potential buyers.

Her name gives the next part of the story away: the partially built yacht was sold to the Dubai government. “Once Jefri fell out with his brothers, his assets were seized, including the yacht which was at early stage of construction,” explains Kostis Antonopoulos, the former managing director of Platinum Yachts, which eventually oversaw the build of Dubai . “In fact, at that time I was working at SETE of Latsis group and we offered for the project, but Dubai offered more and they got it.”

Initially, the Dubai government assigned the build project to Karam Sadikoglou in Turkey. The dock, partially built yacht and containers holding equipment such as main engines and generators were sent to Sadikoglou’s facility in Turkey. However, progress was slow, and the Dubai government demanded the project be transferred to the UAE. With progress still slow and costs skyrocketing, Sadikoglou left the project. Antonopoulos was brought in to finish the build under the banner of Platinum Yachts , a subsidiary of Dubai World. The project had almost 800 people working on it, not including the hundreds of subcontractors. Antonopoulos’s job wouldn’t be an easy one – he had to reorganise the structure of the build team, restore confidence in the project and gain the confidence of the Palace. Sultan bin Sulayem, the chairman of Dubai World, served as the in-between for the owner and yard.

“The design of Dubai was quite ahead of its time, and although she had an enormous size the design did not flirt at all with the shapes of cruise ships,” says Antonopoulos. “And except for the hull, the rest was built and outfitted by people who had no idea what a yacht looked like.” Antonopoulos flew employees to the Monaco Yacht Show so they could see the details that make a superyacht. “It was great experience for them and a quantum leap to their knowledge and understanding,” he says.

The interior design was completed in-house by Platinum, and most of the build-out was by local contractors in Dubai. “The brief was simple: the owner wanted a floating Burj Al Arab – and he got it,” says Antonopoulos of the colourful interior which he describes as an “attack” on the senses. There are many custom details, such as the handmade tiles in the swimming pool, which are lit up by embedded optical fibres. Her massive volume afforded space for 48 guests and 88 crew. Dubai also had a cinema , disco, helideck , and a garage holding a submarine and a variety of toys.

As Dubai was built for a royal, security was a priority. “I asked a computer security firm to hack the yacht’s network , and while we thought that we had a very secure ship, the guys hacked it in 30 minutes! Of course, we redesigned the security,” says Antonopoulos. Another day, the owner came on board and discovered the lower decks did not have a clear GSM signal, so ceilings had to be ripped apart to add repeaters. Challenges to make the yacht SOLAS compliant were resolved by sending materials for lab tests to obtain class approvals.

Antonopoulos, who currently serves as managing director of Samos Steamship Co, looks back fondly at his time working on the build of the iconic yacht Dubai . “I enjoyed building a really good team,” he says. “When I arrived, the people in the project were working in isolation and there were competing teams… I managed to bring them together and make them understand that by cooperation and teamwork we can not only achieve successful completion of the yacht but we can also enjoy our time together!”

It’s been quite a while since the royally iconic yacht Dubai was finally launched in 2006, but Antonopoulos says she stands the test of time. “I think her design is timeless and she can even be considered a classic now.” Dubai sails under the UAE flag and is known to be an active yacht, recently spotted cruising in the waters off her namesake city.

Under pressure in Israel, Netanyahu betting on Republicans

Jeff Hauser of the Revolving Door Project, a US-based watchdog group, says the Israeli premier is trying to position himself as the person “best suited to dealing with Republicans in the United States”.

“He is making a bet that Republicans will be ascendant,” Hauser told Al Jazeera.

“And with this meeting [with Trump] he is showing that he can conduct outreach on behalf of Israel in the United States, and is hoping that that is enough to keep him in power in Israel.

“It’s a gamble – but it’s probably the best gamble that Netanyahu” has at hand, Hauser added.

Dr Waheed Qudaih, the director of the hospital in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis, has described the 45-day siege earlier in the war as a “harsh” and “difficult” period.

“We were not allowed to look out the window, open the hospital door or go outside,” Qudaih said in a video shared by the Palestine Red Crescent Society on social media.

“For 45 days, we endured the worst treatment,” Haneed Wadi, a nurse, also said.

‘Netanyahu does not want to end the war’

Daniel Levy, a political analyst and president of the US/Middle East Project, says the Israeli prime minister has “done everything to undermine” negotiations to end the Gaza war and see captives returned to Israel.

“Many of the hostage families have acknowledged that Netanyahu is the main obstacle. Much of his own security leadership acknowledges that he is an obstacle,” Levy told Al Jazeera.

“The US administration tends not to acknowledge that, but they’ve leaned a bit more into that acknowledgement,” he said. “Netanyahu does not want to end the war, the killing, the destruction – that’s very simple and obvious.”

‘PR win’: Netanyahu-Trump talks conclude with few details

Netanyahu has not yet publicly commented on what was discussed in his meeting with the former US president and Republican 2024 presidential nominee.

Trump has also not posted anything about the meeting on his Truth Social platform.

In a video before the talks formally began, Trump told Netanyahu that “no president has done what I’ve done for Israel”.

Al Jazeera’s Phil Lavelle, reporting from Palm Beach, Florida, said that despite the lack of details on their discussion, the two leaders “can chalk this down to a bit of a PR win”.

That’s “because they both get to project themselves as the strong men who get things done”, Lavelle said. “This was all about optics.”

Israeli air strikes kill 10 more Palestinians across Gaza, Civil Defence says

At least 10 more Palestinians were killed in a series of Israeli air strikes across the Gaza Strip on Friday evening, according to the Civil Defence.

It said in a statement that six Palestinians were killed and others injured in Israeli air strikes on two homes; one in the az-Zawayda town in the central Gaza Strip, and the other in the southern city of Khan Younis.

In another statement, the Palestinian Civil Defence said two Palestinians were killed in an Israeli air attack on a gathering of people in the al-Kateeba area in Khan Younis.

A third statement noted that an Israeli attack on a gathering in western Gaza City killed two people and injured others.

Islamic Jihad slams Palestinian Authority for attempt to detain fighter

The group has said that efforts to detain a fighter from its armed wing, al-Quds Brigades, in Tulkarem show that the security coordination between the PA and Israel has “crossed all red lines”.

Earlier, we reported that clashes broke out in the occupied West Bank town between PA security forces and Palestinian fighters, amid an attempt to arrest Mohammed Jaber, who is wanted by the Israeli military.

Al Jazeera reported that several people intervened to prevent the arrest of the man, also known as Abu Shuja’, as PA security surrounded the Thabet Thabet Governmental Hospital.

“This incident hurts all attempts to achieve unity and national reconciliation,” said the group, in a statement on its official Telegram channel. “The ink has not yet dried on the reconciliation agreement in Beijing. Continuing down this path will only serve the enemy.”

On July 23, various Palestinian factions agreed to form a unity government at talks hosted by China in a deal meant to deliver a post-war Gaza administration.

UN says more than 12,000 Palestinians displaced in central Gaza in past days

The UN’s humanitarian office estimates that about 12,600 Palestinians were displaced from Bureij refugee camp to Maghazi and Nuseirat refugee camps in central Gaza’s Deir el-Balah area between July 22 and 25.

As we’ve been reporting throughout the day, Palestinians across the Gaza Strip have been displaced multiple times since the war began.

Many are sheltering in UN-run facilities or staying with relatives and friends, but most Palestinians in the enclave believe that nowhere is truly safe.

Gaza mediators, Israel spy chief to meet in Rome: Egypt media

Egyptian, Qatari and US mediators are to meet Israeli negotiators in the Italian capital on Sunday in the latest push for a Gaza truce, Egyptian state-linked media has said.

“A four-way meeting between Egyptian officials and their American and Qatari counterparts, in the presence of Israel’s intelligence chief, will be held in Rome,” Al-Qahera news, which has links to Egyptian intelligence, reported, citing an unidentified senior official.

Egypt, along with Qatar and the United States, has been involved in months of mediation efforts aimed at ending the Israeli war raging in the Gaza Strip for more than nine months.

Earlier, US news outlet Axios reported that CIA Director Bill Burns is expected to hold talks on the issue in Rome on Sunday with Israeli, Qatari and Egyptian officials.

The official quoted by Al-Qahera News said Egypt insists on “an immediate ceasefire” as part of the agreement, which should also “ensure the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza” and “safeguard the freedom of movement” of civilians in the Palestinian territory.

Cairo would also like to see a “complete [Israeli] withdrawal from the Rafah crossing” connecting Gaza to Egypt, the official added.

More on US decision to defer removal of Lebanese

The White House will offer deportation relief and work permits to an estimated 11,500 Lebanese nationals already in the US, President Joe Biden has said in a memo.

We reported earlier that Washington made this decision due to humanitarian conditions in southern Lebanon amid tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.

The measure, under an authority known as Deferred Enforced Departure, will allow Lebanese nationals to remain in the US for 18 months and could be renewed.

Israel and Hezbollah have been trading fire since shortly after October 7.

US Representative Debbie Dingell, a Democrat from Michigan, which is home to Lebanese Americans in Detroit and elsewhere, applauded the move.

“Michigan is home to many Lebanese Americans who continue to watch their families suffer as Lebanon faces an unprecedented economic, political, and financial disaster,” she said in a statement.

UN official urges increased protection for Gaza civilians, humanitarian staff

A United Nations official has underscored the dire conditions in Gaza and the challenge of delivering aid.

Muhannad Hadi, deputy special coordinator and resident and humanitarian coordinator of the office of the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, said protection is needed in Gaza for civilians and relief staff.

“Protection is urgently needed for the civilian population in Gaza, but also for the humanitarian operations,” he said. “Humanitarian staff and assets must be protected from all forms of violent attacks.

Hadi added that the inability to achieve the mandate was “beyond our control”.

Gaza aid ship from UAE docks in Egypt’s El Arish

The fourth and largest UAE aid ship for Gaza has docked in Egypt’s El Arish sea port.

The ship carries 5,300 tonnes of aid to Palestinians in Gaza as part of the UAE’s Operation Chivalrous Knight.

During his visit to El Arish, secretary-general of Emirates Red Crescent Authority Rashid al-Mansouri was received by Egypt’s North Sinai governor, Khaled Megawer.

Megawer said that 20 aid ships from different countries had docked in Arish, carrying 34,000 tonnes of aid.

Egyptian and UAE officials visited injured people from Gaza getting treatment at a UAE-operated floating hospital. The hospital’s medical director, Ahmed Mubarak, said that 42 injured Palestinians were being treated there, accompanied by 60 of their relatives.

Biden thanks King Abdullah II for Jordan’s aid effort in Gaza

The US president has hailed Jordan’s “extraordinary humanitarian response” to the situation in Gaza, according to a White House readout of a call between the two leaders.

That assistance “has been critical in addressing the humanitarian crisis in northern Gaza”, the White House said.

“The President updated King Abdullah on his ongoing efforts to secure a hostage release and ceasefire deal, and preparations for a surge in humanitarian assistance during a ceasefire period,” the readout continued.

Israeli attacks on Khan Younis displace 180,000 Palestinians in four days: UN

More than 180,000 Palestinians have fled bombardment around the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis in four days, the United Nations has said.

Recent “intensified hostilities” in the Khan Younis area, more than nine months into the Israeli war, have fuelled “new waves of internal displacement across Gaza”, said the UN humanitarian agency OCHA.

It said that “about 182,000 people” have been displaced from central and eastern Khan Younis between Monday and Thursday, while “hundreds of other people remain stranded in eastern Khan Younis”.

The Israeli military on Monday issued evacuation orders for parts of the southern city, announcing its forces would “forcefully operate” there, including in an area previously declared a safe humanitarian zone.

Palestine’s Olympic team makes entry into Paris Games

The Palestinian athletes have just made their entry into the Olympic Games on a boat in the Seine.

Much support was shared for Palestine during the Asian Cup in Qatar earlier this year and a similar response during Paris 2024 is expected.

Trump’s word on peace process holds little weight: Democratic strategist

Richard Goodstein says people should put little faith in Trump’s claims he could be a peace-builder in the Middle East.

“When Trump says he’s a man of peace; I don’t really know who assigns weight to what Donald Trump has to say about pretty much anything,” the Democratic strategist told Al Jazeera.

Trump, whose administration brokered the so-called Abraham Accords between Israel and Arab states during his time in office, has argued that Hamas’s October 7 attack on southern Israel would never have happened under his watch.

But Goodstein noted that the former US president said during last month’s presidential debate that Israel needs to “finish the job” in Gaza. “That sounds like he means, level Gaza entirely,” he said.

And in an interview with FOX News this week, Trump said Israel needed to move faster to end the war, if only to repair its “public relations” problem.

“Again, I would think twice before I would put too much weight into anything that Donald Trump has to say about the peace process,” Goodstein added.

Trump seeking to present himself as peace-builder in Netanyahu talks

Donald Trump had to have this photo opportunity to project the fact that he could also be the man in the White House dealing with Prime Minister Netanyahu in just a few months’ time.

We had been told that this would be a closed meeting, but obviously because it’s such a big PR opportunity for Donald Trump and for Mr Netanyahu, those images, those videos, have been coming through, where we saw them at that table talking.

Remember, Donald Trump is trying to project himself as the man who will bring about world peace and peace in the Middle East.

For Netanyahu, this is a very strong relationship that he needs to bring back online because if Donald Trump does come back to the White House, he is going to be Israel’s main protector, main arms supplier.

Netanyahu seeks to shore up support before US elections

As we’ve been reporting, Netanyahu is holding talks with Trump in Florida as the Israeli prime minister wraps up a busy trip to the US.

Netanyahu addressed a joint session of the US Congress on Wednesday, stressing the importance of strong US-Israel ties and continued American support amid his country’s war on Gaza.

The Israeli leader, who is under domestic pressure to agree to a ceasefire that will see the return to captives held in the Palestinian enclave, also spoke with US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday in Washington, DC.

Netanyahu is hoping to ensure Israel retains support from both major US political parties before the country’s November elections, which are expected to pit Trump against Harris.

The Israeli war on Gaza has spurred condemnation across the US, with key segments of the Democratic Party base demanding an end to American military assistance to Israel.

Using Nazism analogy to describe Gaza war ‘not useful’: Palestinian official

Majed Bamya, deputy permanent observer of the State of Palestine to the UN, has said that while the anger and outrage at the horrors Israel is inflicting on people in Gaza is legitimate, making historical comparisons with Nazism or Holocaust analogies should be avoided.

“I continue to believe that such historical comparisons are not useful. They do not enlighten minds nor further knowledge. On the contrary. There are many historical examples we can draw from without having to use the Nazism or the Holocaust analogy,” Bamya said in a post on X.

He also acknowledged that while many aspects of that particular historical era are relevant to the Gaza war, “shortcuts and un-nuanced parallels do not allow to draw the necessary lessons from the tragedies that occurred then.”

“As for the use of the Holocaust to justify atrocities, we have a duty to engage on that matter and reject such instrumentalisation and distortion. But we must do so with the utmost respect for the victims of the Holocaust, including the survivors, as we continue making ours the pledge ‘Never Again’, a pledge that is relevant regardless of the identity of the victims or the perpetrators.”
