Council approves design for Cape Coral Yacht Club

Santa Cruz Harbor

The harbor was created, by converting Woods Lagoon in 1963. The Army Corps of Engineers made the breakwater and the county developed the port facility. The Army Corps of Engineers considers it "Santa Cruz Small Craft Harbor," the name as it appears on road maps (the AAA maps as one example) and many nautical maps. Most businesses in the area list their address as "Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor." It is also known as "Santa Cruz Harbor." On Google Maps, it is shown as Woods Lagoon. In 1973, the harbor was expanded beyond the bridge to include the rest of the lagoon. Woods Lagoon was named for John Woods, whose property bordered the lagoon. Although the harbor now covers the entire lagoon, Woods Lagoon still appears on some maps.

The slips for boats in the harbor are in high demand.  Some people have waited over 15 years to get a slip.  There is a long waiting list.

If someone in the harbor, who has a slip- sells the boat that is in the slip, the new owner only has the slip for one year. After that time, they must move the boat out of the harbor and go onto the waiting list if they want to rent a slip in the harbor .   Since the slips are rented , they cannot be sold or inherited. IF the ship owner dies, the person who inherits the boat can leave it in the slip for one year.

This rooftop bar started off as a strictly tapas spot with a focus on handcrafted, tiki-inspired cocktails and locally brewed craft beer. TIBURON — Squinting his eyes against a radiant sun gleaming on the waters of Belvedere Cove Friday, Kenichi Horie stood confident atop the small, 19-foot aluminum sailboat Suntory Mermaid III as it swayed on the waves — his home for the next two and a half months.

A little before 10 a.m. Saturday, the famed 83-year-old Japanese yachtsman sailed underneath the Golden Gate Bridge, gazed upon the wide horizon and headed west toward the land of the rising sun. It’s a long, treacherous and (some would say) insane solo voyage that will take months to complete and could be the most dangerous one he’s ever taken.

And, especially at his age, there’s no guarantee he’ll make it.

Despite his decades of experience sailing — and three other solo ocean crossings — Horie acknowledged Friday that he still gets “very nervous” before such arduous journeys.

The five-foot-tall Japanese sailor and voyager had the boat designed to his specifications. He also has the tools to stay safe and all the books, cornflakes and rice he will need. And he’ll be watched over by faithful fans planning to train their eyes on the GPS tracker aboard his boat.

“It’s almost the same as before,” Horie said of his first voyage across the Pacific from Japan to San Francisco in 1962.“But my age, that’s the difference.”

From the moment he first stepped aboard a sailboat on the shores of Japan as a teenager, Horie recalled surveying the vast Pacific with ambitious dreams of conquering it for himself. From the Polynesian explorers of a thousand years ago to Magellan and his European sailors and to the towering cargo ships that trudge slowly across the waves, few have dared to brave the choppy, deep and boundless Pacific — especially alone.

But Horie has worked his whole life to tame it. During his first solo voyage in 1962 aboard the Suntory Mermaid, Horie set off from Nishinomiya, Japan, for San Francisco and spent 94 days at sea. Finally greeted by the Golden Gate after months with no land in sight, Horie became the third person ever to sail alone across the world’s largest ocean.

Yachtsman legend says Horie arrived in San Francisco with no passport, no money and little to no English speaking skills and was promptly detained. Upon hearing of his brave journey, then-San Francisco Mayor George Christopher personally released him, gave him a 30-day visa and gifted him the key to the city.

Since then, Horie’s made similarly dangerous solo journeys, circumnavigating the globe from east to west in 1974 and then north to south in 1978. In 1985, he sailed a solar boat from Hawaii to Japan, and from 1992 to 1993, Horie did it again on a paddle boat. And he embarked on two more cross-Pacific journeys, in 1999 and 2002.

Now he’s braving the seas once more.

“I never imagined myself being here at 83 years old, but I am happy that I am,” Horie said in an interview at the San Francisco Yacht Club. “My goal was to cross the Pacific at 100 years old, but I’m not sure my heart will be beating then. I want to do it now — I have to do it now.”

Horie’s boat is tiny, at just 19 feet long. He had to think of every way possible to conserve space and make sure the boat would take him safely across the ocean. Inside the cabin, two small mats are laid out to serve as his bed. He has a few books — one of them about Magellan’s circumnavigation of the globe exactly five centuries ago this year — and a satellite phone for emergencies. His food? Bowls of pre-cooked rice, cornflakes and shelf-stable milk. As for music, Horie said the crashing waves and howling winds are all the melody he needs.

Asked if he is confident about the journey, Horie said “always.” Aside from the danger of typhoon weather as he nears Japan on the last legs of his trip, the journey should be smooth sailing.

But how do you stay sane for months on end, alone, at sea with no land in sight and no way to communicate with anyone?

“I don’t want to say that I don’t like people, but the point of this is that it’s a solo journey. That’s the main objective” Horie said. “I also like to be alone.”

For avid sailor and member of the Silicon Valley Sailing Club Nick Sugimoto — CEO of the Honda Innovations research lab in Mountain View — Horie’s journey is something he’d likely never have the guts to do.

“I’d rather take a plane to Japan,” Sugimoto said. “It takes a special person.”

Sugimoto and his friends from the sailing club helped Horie get his boat ready to sail on Saturday, hoisting up the mast and finishing up the boat’s complicated rigging. They also brought him the rice he’ll be eating on the boat for months.

To meet him is an incredible honor, Sugimoto said.

“Probably all Japanese sailors know about him,” Sugimoto said. “My mom is 85, and she’s okay but I don’t think she could do this. My dad is 90. To think of someone that age doing something like this is crazy. But I know it’ll be a piece of cake for him. And I don’t think this is his last trip.”

Since arriving in San Francisco from Japan to take the solo trip, Horie has had quite the reception. And just last week he received a warm greeting and a celebration of his feats during a special event honoring him at the Maritime Museum — an event that moved him to tears. A humble man, Horie was embarrassed that so many people would come out to see and praise him.

The museum is home to Horie’s Suntory Mermaid II as well as other artifacts from his journey, including his logbook, life jacket and trusty flip flops, which he delighted in seeing.

Maritime Museum Superintendent Bert Ho was happy to honor Horie.

“It’s a tremendous feat to do even just once, and this is going to be his fourth journey,” Ho said. “I have no doubt in my mind he is as strong a yachtsman as his history shows. He’ll absolutely make it.”

Just hours before he was set to sail, Horie was still taking interviews and talking to fans about the voyage. He stepped aside for a few minutes to eat lunch alone but returned to his entourage of supporters with a smile on his face and an eager look toward the ocean.

He said everyone always asks him whether he goes a little crazy being aboard the ship alone so long, but for him the Pacific is home.

“That’s the kind of thing a sane person would ask,” he said. “I’m already crazy.”

This is the award-winning Here Comes the Sun , the biggest yacht ever built by the Dutch yard Amels , and widely acknowledged as the pride and joy of New Zealand billionaire and passionate superyacht collector Graeme Hart.

The yacht hit the headlines when it was delivered in 2017 and showcased at that year’s Miami International Boat Show. With its head-turning exterior design by Britain’s Tim Heywood and luxurious interior by fellow Brit Andrew Winch, it was the undisputed star of the show.

The original owner was reportedly Russian drilling industry tycoon Alexander Dzhaparidze, known for naming his superyachts after Beatles tunes. Before Here Comes the Sun , he owned the Amels-built Imagine before moving on to another Heywood/Winch-designed Amels, the 197-foot Come Together.

After being snapped up by the new owner in late 2019, Here Comes the Sun went back to the Damen Yachting/Amels sheds in Vlissingen in southwest Holland for what would turn out to be a near-total makeover.

Dutch naval architects Azure Yacht Design were called in to mastermind slicing open the hull and adding the 20-foot extension. They also stretched the sundeck to create that second helipad—there’s also a touch-and-go pad on the foredeck—big enough to land a Bell 429 or Airbus H145.

The refit also saw the swimming pool on the main deck—once again the key word here— stretched to 23 feet, while two new bridge-deck VIP suites were added, each with 39-foot-long private balconies. 

Saving one of the biggest jobs until last, the entire yacht was sanded, re-faired and re-painted, switching out the original, rather milquetoast, beige-yellow hull color to a classy navy blue with stark white topsides.

“It was a huge scope of work. To pull it off in just over a year was a real credit to Amels,” said Colin Boyle, the vessel’s captain since 2019, who helped project-manage the refit during the 16-month stay in the yard.

Damen Yachting sales manager Michael Coens added: “Many of the same craftsmen and women who were meticulously involved in the original build, worked on her during the refit, remolding and reshaping her into the new masterpiece she is.”

The refit was rewarded with the “Best Rebuilt Yacht” trophy at the 2022 World Superyacht Awards. 

Accommodations-wise, within the 292-foot length, sprawling 47-foot beam, and 2,955 gross tonnage, the yacht can accommodate 20 guests in 10 cabins, tended to by a crew of 27.

Without doubt, one of the standout features is the truly massive, full-deck owner’s suite. It comes with a master bedroom boasting forward views through 180-degree wraparound glass, a private lounge with a balcony, office, his-and-hers bathrooms and spacious dressing room. 

For relaxation, the owner can kick back in a huge private salon with comfy sofas, dining area, bar, and pool table. Towards the stern, there’s the full-beam owner’s sun deck with sofas, lounges and a dining table for ten. Steps away is a tiered movie theater.

Naturally, there’s no shortage of water toys. The main tender is a sleek, custom-built 34-foot limo built by Germany’s Yachtwerft Meyer and painted in matching navy and white. There’s also a 30-foot RIB and 23-foot Super Air Nautique wakesurf boat. Plus, a small armada of Sea-Doos and seabobs.

The vessel is listed jointly with brokers Fraser and Burgess.

The sweetest driver and the most amazing relaxing time. We didn't have to worry about anything. Really throughly enjoyed our time. We drove to San Francisco to a wedding, my aunts and uncles are older and it's hard for them to see in long drives outside of our city. This was a treat! It was around 30+ of us. Super friendly customer service, everything was easy and smooth. The bus was clean as a whistle and we were able to play our own music. Bluetooth connected, waters and a TV! We brought our own snacks and a little bit of wine, we had a blast.

We rented a party bus for my husband and I's 30th and it was incredible! Mark was awesome and made sure we all got there and back safely, and we got sooo many compliments from our friends that came. Plenty of space, super clean ride and overall just a great time! Definitely recommend!

I had my senior ball on 5/5 and Mark was amazing! I found him on yelp and had messaged him starting from February because I knew how crazy prom season would be. I copied part of the message he sent me for the quote I asked for: "The following land yacht is available for your 6 hour (5:45p-11:45p) event on the date you've requested.  30-36 passenger - $1,695.00 Our prices INCLUDE ALL FEES AND CHAUFFEUR'S GRATUITY, as well as complimentary ice and bottled water." I had 32 people on my bus and we all had enough space! The water was definitely awesome for the end of the night but Mark was so responsible and got us to SF city hall on time and safely. He was so quick at replying to my messages and I have had looked into many other places and this was the most accommodating and reasonably priced. Highly recommend !!

Our group had an amazing time! Mark arrived on time to pick us up and the bus was clean and spacious. The bathroom on board was an added plus. The pricing is very favorable to other companies and the bus has everything you need. I wish I had taken pictures of the interior because the other photos on here don't do it justice. There's also a TV that you can stream to. We ended up extending our reservation an hour because we didn't want it to end. We will definitely be using Mark again in the future.

I had my 40th birthday bash and Mark was amazing. Bus was very clean and roomy with a bathroom which was a plus. Hands down, book with Pacific Land Yachts if you are looking for a party bus. Would definitely do business again!

I rented a bus for my brothers 30th birthday and it was an unforgettable night! The bus was in great condition and so much bigger than I imagined. It even had a restroom which was helpful because we had it reserved for 5 hours. The driver was fantastic and let us blast our music and dance the whole time. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a good time!!

Mark is pretty darn awesome! We chartered his land yacht for a work event. Everyone had an amazing time, and everyone said that they would definitely want to work with Mark again for both future and personal events that require group transportation. FIVE STARS ALL THE WAY!
