Product Description

Our Tall Yachting Boots are the perfect solution for keeping a steady grip on slippy surfaces. A 100% natural rubber compound boot, they are quick drying with a polyester lining and removeable cushioned insoles. Their reinforced heel, instep and toe, combined with the non-slip, non-marking razor cut outsole ensure a safe grip, while the padded tie top adds that extra level of security.

By following a few simple steps, you can help protect your rubber and neoprene footwear and maintain their performance. After every use, we recommend that you clean the exterior of your boots with a stiff brush and wipe with a wet sponge, leaving them to dry naturally. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight. Avoid extremes of temperature, especially sources of direct heat and sunshine. Please note that boat cabins and stowage lockers can be subject to significant changes in temperature. Should the inside of your boots become wet, you should thoroughly dry before use or long-term storage. Crumpled newspaper will help draw out moisture and can help speed up the drying time. Heat and a lack of abrasion can cause the outside surface of the sole to stiffen and become shiny over time. You can renew the rubber material with a grit paper or by regularly walking over rough surfaces such as asphalt or concrete.

Fabric Composition

100% Natural Rubber Compound

Non-splip, non-marking razor cut outsoles for grip. Quick dry polyester lining. Removable cushioned inner soles for fast drying. Reinforced heel, instep and toe. Padded tie top.

The Best Sailing Boots

When it comes to sailing boots, you will want to look out for a few things. Are the boots breathable, tall, or short, and what are they made from?

In my 10-year career in the yachting industry, I’ve found the best overall pair of sailing boots are the Gill Tall Yachting Boot.

Gill Tall Yachting Boot

  • Value for money
  • Durable and long-lasting
  • Versatile boots suitable for all boating disciplines
  • Not many! But prone to odor build-up

However, the equation has more nuance. It really depends on what discipline of sailing you need them for. I’ve highlighted the best for each scenario below:

One last mention before we start is there are only boots on this list. Check out this list for the top sailing shoes to wear on deck.

💦 Best Waterproof Sailing Boots – Xtratuf Legacy Series Boot

Xtratuf Legacy Series Boots

Pros 👍 Waterproof and triple-dipped neoprene Special non-slip material Durable and long-lasting

Cons 👎 Price point Fit not for wider feet

Xtratuf is known for doing one thing: making high-quality ocean-going waterproof boots. Their timeless classic is the Legacy Series Boot, and it’s still the best overall waterproof boot for sailing, fishing, and general boating.

Made from a synthetic material, they are lighter than traditional rubber boots. In addition, a unique triple-dipping process means the wearer will get a fully waterproof boot that is also highly durable and resistant to chemicals and cleaning products, so these boots won’t crack or fissure.

Aside from market-leading durability, they feature a stepped heel which helps keep them extremely comfortable after long hours of wear. And on the toe section is added abrasion resistance to absorb impacts and protect the foot.

The inner boot is constructed with a moisture-wicking and breathable lining to provide a little extra warmth, and Xtratuf says it reduces drying time.

A classic chevron pattern outsole provides unparalleled grip and traction for the wearer in inclement conditions.

⛵ Best Dinghy Sailing Boots – Gill Edge Boots

Gill Edge 4mm Neoprene Boots

Pros 👍 Made with a waterproof neoprene Provide good insulation & warmth Durable and long-lasting

Cons 👎 Not as breathable as other materials Higher price point than others on the market

Featuring a wrap-around flexible soul that’ll give you fantastic performance and grip when you move around the dinghy.

An easy entry system is key to making quality dinghy sailing boots, and the Gill Edge features a lace closure system that fully opens the ankle so you can hop in and out of them quickly.

They are constructed with 4mm neoprene which will help keep your feet warm and give you comfort even on full racing days on the water.

A wrap-around outer rubber sole gives you optimal grip in wet conditions, and there is reinforcement in the heel and toe. While a supported instep means you can maintain agility while wearing the non-marking soles.

Gill’s Edge series are useful in many watersports areas, from sailing and racing dinghies and lasers. To stand up paddleboarding and even surfing in cold water.

  • Not as breathable as other materials
  • Higher price point than others on the market

🌊 Best Offshore Sailing Boots – Gill Offshore Boot

Gill Offshore Sailing Boot

Pros 👍 Reinforced toe and heel Customize the fit with thermal molding Features a breathable membrane

Cons 👎 None!

The Gill Offshore Sailing Boots completes the offshore foul weather gear series, so these are perfectly matched with their OS jacket and trousers/bibs. However, they are still a brilliant choice even if you don’t own those.

These two-layer boots have loads of great features and capabilities. Firstly the inside of the boot is made with 3mm neoprene that fits snuggly against your leg. This provides great thermal protection and is lined with fire fleece which is what high-end wetsuits use.

The outside features Gill’s patented Xplore Fabric Technology, a three-layer fabric that provides the wearer with a highly durable, waterproof, breathable boot.

By pulling the outer layer up and over your foul-weather trouser, you will now have an extra layer of waterproofing and repellence from water ingress. A drawstring is at the top of the boot to seal off the top.

In addition, there is a perforated neoprene section at the bottom so that if any water is trapped between your bib and the outer layer, it’ll drain out.

The final aspect of these boots is the thermal molded foot. There is both heel and toe protection from reinforcements. On the bottom, a razor-cut outsole will give you heaps of grip for wet/slippery decks.

  • Reinforced toe and heel
  • Customize the fit with thermal molding
  • Features a breathable membrane

🌡️ Best Warm Sailing Boots – Dubarry Ultima Sailing Boots

Made in Ireland with only the best materials Dubarry are the hallmark of leather boots. Their Ultima Sailing Boot gives you luxurious comfort and fantastic practical use.

You may ask why you would take a pair of leather boots out to sea. Dubarry has perfected its construction to be fully waterproof and breathable. As a result, they are incredibly strong and supple when salt water soaks the outside. But they’ll remain bone dry on the inside.

A hexagonal pattern on the outer sole provides loads of grip in slippery conditions and the ability to move around freely. It’s an award-winning design, as well as being non-marking. Heel and toe reinforcements provide extra layers of protection from stubbing and bumping into deck hardware.

Gore-tex lining on the inside is where these boots provide unmatched warmth, and if you are sailing or boating in cold conditions, then there is no better boot than the Ultima Sailing Boot.

These boots will last years if you take proper care of them. Leather takes extra work to keep them optimal, but it’s well worth the effort. You won’t find a warmer or more comfortable sailing boot on the market.

💵 Best Sailing Boots Under $100 – Gul Full Length Deck Boots

GUL Full Length Deck Boots

Pros 👍 Designed to be completely waterproof Built to last Non-slip soles The price

Cons 👎 Limited ventilation Heavier than other sailing boots Limited lifespan at this price

I have personally used these deck boots from Gul, and they are great value for money. Yacht crew routinely use these as working boots, and they hold up against harsh chemicals and cleaning products, as well as the Xtratuf Legacy Boots.

They also make for fantastic bargain sailing boots. The full-length high top features a drawstring closure to ensure a watertight seal so that you won’t have water falling inside the boot.

A razor-cut chevron patterned outsole provides plenty of grip in wet and slippery conditions. Additional support at the ankle means the boot is comfortable all day long. And extra protection at the heel and toe provides confidence around deck hardware.

These rubber boots provide you with full waterproofing. However, you will need warm socks if you are boating in colder conditions. But they will keep your feet dry.

At under $100, you can’t go wrong with these boots. They are comfortable, durable, and waterproof and have non-slip soles. That’s everything that most recreational boaters really need.

  • Limited ventilation
  • Heavier than other sailing boots

🏆 The Best Overall Sailing Boots – Gill Tall Yachting Boots

Pros 👍 Value for money Durable and long-lasting Versatile boots suitable for all boating disciplines

Cons 👎 Not many! But prone to odor build-up

These are another pair of boots I have used extensively in the yachting industry. They too, hold up better than expected against cleaning products and chemicals.

The most surprising of which is their resilience to teak two-parting products. If a pair of boots can make it through that, then I will personally certify them as durable.

They feature a razor-cut chevron patterned outsole to give you plenty of grip on the deck, and they are also quick-drying due to the polyester lining. Like the Gul boots above, you will need warm socks for cold-weather sailing.

With reinforcement in the heel, toe, and instep, you won’t need to watch every step, and there is added abrasion resistance around the base of the boot.

They are made from 100% rubber, which I have experienced as highly durable even if you decide to put them through their paces.

🧑‍⚖️ Our recommendation process

At Sailing Savvy, we have nearly 20 years of experience in the yachting industry. As a result, we have used numerous sailing boots from brands like Gill, Helly Hansen, Gul, and Musto.

The recommendations we share are 100% impartial and bias-free. We only offer genuine advice on what we have come to know as the best and most reliable sailing gear.

📃 Guide To Buying Sailing Boots

Tall boots vs. short boots.

Most sailing boots are eight high top or low cut. Ultimately it depends on what you’ll be doing out on the water. I’d recommend using a high boot for sailing because it works in unison with your foul-weather gear.

Having a short boot when wearing foul-weather trousers or bibs may cause a hindrance, and water will most definitely make its way inside the boot. The short boot makes sense if you use them for dinghy sailing, as you won’t want bulky footwear as you move around.

Single Layer and Multi-layers

Single-layer (typically rubber) boots are for most entry-level sailors. You get fully waterproof capability and non-slip outsoles. However, the rubber won’t keep your feet warm in cold weather sailing.

Getting a multi-layer boot is recommended if you are sailing in colder conditions. Dubarry makes the warmest boots on the market with their Gore-tex Thinsulate lining to keep the inside once and toasty.

Lastly, neoprene boots like the Gill Offshore fit snugly against the leg to aid in warmth. An out waterproof material keeps them waterproof. These boots are best for sailing conditions where you’ll encounter lots of sea spray and rain.

Breathability

Rubber boots don’t afford your feet breathability, so you need to consider this in your buying decision. If you are doing intense sailing, your feet will start to sweat, so the condensation can’t escape. Ultimately you’ll end up with wet feet and, by default, cold feet.

A boot made with neoprene will also trap moisture inside the boot. They will, however, keep your feet warm, which means you can still wear them for long periods.

Leather boots are breathable, so moisture can still escape. These are the best option to keep your feet dry and give you superior warmth.

🙋‍♀️ FAQs About Sailing Boots

Do you wear socks with sailing boots.

I always strongly recommend wearing socks with your sailing boots because they can help prevent blisters and provide warmth in cold weather. Socks can also absorb sweat and prevent foul smells from making their home inside your sailing boots.

There are several types of socks that can be worn with sailing boots, including:

Thick, cushioned socks: These socks provide extra padding and support for your feet, which is helpful when spending long periods of time out on the deck in inclement weather.

Moisture-wicking socks: Typically these socks are made from materials that draw moisture away from the skin, keeping your feet dry and comfortable.

Wool socks: Wool socks are a good choice for cold-weather sailing, as they naturally insulate and keep your feet warm. Pair good quality merino wool socks with Dubarry’s Ultimas, and you can’t go wrong.

What Boots To Wear On A Boat?

This follows from the buying guide I touched on above, but I’ll add some other factors here to consider for the sake of thoroughness.

Waterproofing: For wet conditions, choosing waterproof boots is important to keep your feet dry. Look for boots made from rubber or boots with a built-in waterproof lining.

Traction: Boat decks can be slippery, so it’s important to choose boots with good traction to help prevent falls. Look for boots with non-slip soles or traditional laser-cut chevron patterns on the outsole.

Support: If you’ll be standing for long periods, then choose boots that offer good support for your feet and ankles.

Warmth: We touched on this topic throughout the article, but to recap, cold-weather sailing requires warm and insulated boots. Thermally insulated sailing boots are your best bet for these conditions. Don’t forget your socks!

In general, choosing sailing boots that are durable, comfortable, and suitable for the conditions in which you’ll be sailing is a good idea. Be sure to try on different brands and styles to find the boots that work best for you.

💭 Final Thoughts

Many sailors use sailing boots at some stage or another. And while you may be tempted to get a cheap pair, you’ll regret not spending a little bit more for a good pair.

You can still get a quality pair for under $100 that’ll serve you well. But if you are cold weather sailing regularly, then investing in sailing boots that complement your foul weather gear is a must.

Ultimately keeping your feet warm is critical to your comfort and enjoyment out on the water. So next, I’d suggest diving into the best foul-weather gear on the market to round out your wet-weather equipment for your next sailing adventure.

Best sailing boots: 9 of the best seaboots tested in Dutch sea trial

Graham Snook

  • Graham Snook
  • October 7, 2020

Wherever and whenever you sail, sea boots are essential if you want the comfort of warm, dry feet. The Yachting Monthly team set about testing a range of options to find the best sailing boots on offer

best-sailing-boots-tested

Not many people like to think of sailing in heavy weather but the reality is that it happens. It has been said that there’s no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong choice of clothing, so unless you can guarantee your conditions will always be warm and sunny, sailing boots are an item of kit that everyone should have.

A good pair of sea boots should see you through many a night watch or wet and windy beat to windward. Quite aside from the obvious role of keeping your feet dry, the best sailing boots will need to cover a number of bases.

Read our guide to the newest models of sailing boots on the market right now

They need to be warm, comfortable and offer grip that you can trust, as well as being easy to get on and off during both day and night. It also helps if they can be folded down to make the most of the space in your kitbags.

In the interest of fairness, and simple curiosity, we also tried a pair of £10 Planet Plastic wellington boots, but as these weren’t designed for yachts and as it became immediately clear that they provided little grip on board, they were dispatched to a locker on the first day, not to reappear.

9 of the best sailing boots tried and tested

Gill-Tall-Yachting-Sole

The boots weren’t as sticky as the others on test, slipping at 43° in the dry

Gill Tall Yachting Boot

**BEST BUDGET BUY**

SPECIFICATIONS

SIZE RANGE: UK/EU 5.5-13/39-48 | UPPER: Rubber | LINING: Polyester | SOLE: Rubber | GAITER: No

Reasons to buy

– Great value for money – Plenty of space for socks and comfort

Reasons to avoid

– Lacking design features and insulation

These boots are comfortable and easily the cheapest sea boot in our test. A shorter sailing boot variant is also available, and both come in junior sizes.

While they lack the design and features of the other boots on test, they were comfy, even if they weren’t as well insulated or the grip as sticky (43° in the dry).

There’s plenty of space in the boot’s toe box so toes don’t feel cramped and there is space for warm socks. They were easy enough to get on, but, like Le Chameau Alizé (below), the high leg might not fit everyone’s leg shape.

Where many of the other boots taper around the ankle to give a secure fit, these didn’t.

Chameau-Alize-Sole

The Michelin sole offered secure footing – 47° in the dry and 53° in the wet

LE CHAMEAU ALIZE SAILING BOOTS

SIZE RANGE: UK/EU 6-12/39-47 | UPPER: Natural rubber | LINING: Ponti | SOLE: Rubber | GAITER: Yes

– Soft and subtle for rubber boots – Good grip

– Slim fit on calves

If your calves are wide, getting these boots on could pose problems, which is a shame because they are good sailing boots. The rubber boots have a leg that is tall and narrow, with a small top gaiter.

We had the Ponti lining version, which didn’t provide much insulation, but they are available with a neoprene liner for an extra £20 on top of the £150 RRP.

The sole is made by Michelin and gave secure footing on board, slipping at 47° in the dry and 53° in the wet.

The rubber these sailing boots are made from is extremely supple and they were very comfortable – like wearing trainers. Because they were secure, they were more difficult to get off.

Dubary-Ultima-Sole

After a disappointing start, the grip improved to 49° in the dry after a few days’ wear

DUBARRY ULTIMA SAILING BOOTS

SIZE RANGE: UK/EU 5-12/38-47 | UPPER: Leather | LINING: Gore-Tex | SOLE: Polyurethane/rubber | GAITER: No

– High quality boots – Soft, pliable leather

– Pricy

These all-leather upper sailing boots had a lovely quality to them. The leather was soft and pliable and the whole team agreed they were the best looking and felt beautiful.

They have a loop to help pull them on, as well as a stretch panel at the back and they are also available in ‘ExtraFit’ sizes for the wide calved among us.

Again, the grip was disappointing to begin with but improved after a few days’ wear to 49° in the dry and slightly more in the wet.

The leather, with the Gore-Tex lining gave plenty of insulation without too much bulk, although the fit was rather hit and miss with our test team.

Dubarry-Crosshaven-Sole

After initially disappointing grip results, the soles improved over time

DUBARRY CROSSHAVEN SAILING BOOTS

SIZE RANGE: UK/EU 5-12/38-47 | UPPER: Leather/ Gore-Tex/Cordura | LINING: Gore-Tex | SOLE: Polyurethane/rubber | GAITER: Yes

– Loads of features for comfort and ease of use – Great weather proofing

– Initial grip not great – Expensive

The large gaiter, with two retro reflective stripes, conceals handy leather tabs with finger holes to help pull these Gore-Tex-lined sailing boots on. They are very well made, as one would expect for the price.

The lower section of the sailing boot is leather with a protective rubber panel around the toe and heel of the foot, which also gives grip to kick them off easily.

The fit is a bit narrow, especially around the toes, but the soft insulated lining helps them fit well.

Initially the grip was 44° in the dry, but testing a worn pair (owned by one of our team) showed their grip improves over time.

Musto-Ocean-Sole

They were very comfortable and the soles achieved good grip up to 53° in the dry

MUSTO OCEAN RACER SAILING BOOTS

SIZE RANGE: UK/EU 4-13/37-48 | UPPER: Synthetic/Cordura | LINING: Gore-Tex | SOLE: Gripdeck rubber | GAITER: Yes

– Unique lacing system makes for a great fit – Great grip in dry and wet

– Fairly bulky – Gaiter toggle can get in the way

These sailing boots were very comfortable with good grip to 53° in the dry. They are the top-of-the-range boots from Musto and have a unique elasticated lacing system.

This gives the sailing boots a snug fit around the leg, although we thought this could have been more useful if it continued further down to the ankle or the foot.

The Cordura gaiters are good, but the toggle at the back digs in if you’re helming with your calves resting against a surface.

There’s a fabric loop at the rear of the boot to aid getting them on, but it’s a bit fiddly to use. In spite of their bulk, these sailing boots gained praise from our testers.

Zhik-ZK-Seaboot-Sole

The bouncy soles absorb impact well and offered the best grip on test

ZHIK ZK SEABOOT

**BEST ON TEST**

SIZE RANGE: UK/EU 5-12/38-47 | UPPER: Rubber/neoprene | LINING: Merino/neoprene | SOLE: Rubber | GAITER: Yes

– Very warm and very comfortable – Gaiters to keep out water

– Style might not appeal to all

The bold branding might not be for everyone, but these sailing boots had the best grip on test (54° dry, 53° wet) even if they did squeak annoyingly against the deck.

They were warm and extremely comfortable, thanks in part to the Merino lining and bouncy soles that absorb impact.

The gaiters were good, although the toggles on the inner leg catch each other unless they are tucked in. There were good handles on the front and rear of the leg to help get them on and off.

The neoprene helps to keep them light and easy to stow. If your mid-foot is high, you may find the fit a bit tight. Zhik also offers a sailing boot without the gaiter.

Gill-Performance-Sole

The team were impressed with the grip, which slipped at 52° in both wet and dry conditions

GILL PERFORMANCE RACE BOOTS

SIZE RANGE: UK/EU 5.5-11/39-46 | UPPER: Synthetic | LINING: Soft-touch polyester | SOLE: Thermoplastic polyurethane | GAITER: No

– Useful side handles with which to pull boots on – Very good grip

– Side handles add bulk

The team agreed these warm, breathable sailing boots from Gill were good and solid. The leg of the boot did feel stiff, but softer than the Henri Lloyd boot and it may well soften more in time.

The large side handles (one on each side) add bulk, but make getting them on easy, while the prominent wedge on the heel makes removing them easy by catching it under the toe of the other foot without damaging them.

The leg of the sailing boot is fabric with protective areas around the ankles, while the base/outsole is moulded TPU.

The sole had a good grip and offered a reading of 52° in both wet and dry before it slipped.

Henri-Lloyd-Shadow

The soles feature a razor-cut grip which didn’t inspire much confidence

HENRI-LLOYD SHADOW SAILING BOOTS

SIZE RANGE: UK/EU 4-12/37-47 | UPPER: Leather/Cordura | LINING: Dri-Lex | SOLE: Dual compound | GAITER: No

– Good wet grip – Good insulation

– Initially very stiff

The team found these sailing boots were stiff, and while they would soften with time, until then you’ll have to deal with an aggressive leather edge on the top.

On the plus side, they do have a good loop on the rear to make it easier to pull them on.

The soles feature a razor-cut grip which didn’t inspire confidence to start with, confirmed by a dry reading of 45°, but a better angle of 48° in the wet.

They have good insulation and are well made, although the lack of a heel kick was a shame. The ankle of the boot did have a tendency to dig in a little while kneeling down on deck.

Chameau-Neptune-Sole

The suction-cup design on the sole gave 50° grip in the dry and 54° in the wet

LE CHAMEAU NEPTUNE SAILING BOOTS

SIZE RANGE: UK/EU 6-12/39-47 | UPPER: Rubber | LINING: Neoprene | SOLE: Rubber | GAITER: Yes RRP: £290

– Very good grip – Great at keeping water out

– Gaiter toggle can get in the way – Socks tend to get pulled off when removing your foot

As worn by Volvo Ocean Race crews, these are serious sailing boots. The neoprene liner provides insulation while the suction-cup design on the sole gives good grip: 50° in the dry, 54° in the wet.

There’s raw rubber inside the boot around the heel to grip feet snugly, although it also gripped socks, managing to pull them down inside the boot.

They have a well-drained gaiter that stops the Velcro on oilskin trousers from coming undone and helps keep water out.

The toggle at the back of the gaiter, however, digs into your leg when you’re kneeling down.

CONCLUSION: WHICH SAILING BOOTS PERFORMED BEST?

The cost will be a big consideration, with £284 covering the difference between the cheapest and the most expensive. For value for money, no other sailing boots on test could compete with the Gill Tall Yachting Boot . The fact they come in short or tall and sizes down to UK size 4 only adds to their appeal.

The Chameau Alizé is a good mid-range boot, as is the Gill Performance, but spending a little more will get you boots with gaiters.

The Musto sailing boots were extremely good, although they were pricey, and for that reason they were pipped to the top spot by the Zhik ZK Seaboot , which had the best grip, good gaiters, were warm and comfortable to spend the day in, and are easy to put on and take off.

tall yachting boots

All the boots were put through a rigorous wet and dry incline test.

HOW WE TESTED THE SAILING BOOTS

The sailing boots were initially tested over a three-day sailing trip in Dutch waters. While our evenings below decks were warm, the temperature during the day was bitterly cold.

The boots were worn by the YM test team and swapped regularly so we all got a chance to wear different boots as we went about our different roles on board, in both rain and shine.

The sailing boots were then subjected to a wet and dry incline test on the bathing platform of the Bestevaer 45ST Pure , which we could adjust by winching the halyard attached to the end.

After the initial test, the team then wore the sailing boots that fitted them best over the season and reported back.

Some manufacturers do produce boots specifically for female sailors, but most of the sailing boots we tested were unisex and came in a wide range of sizes for both men and women.

Product Description

100% natural rubber compound boot with high levels of support and comfort. Non-slip razor cut soles makes this the ideal boot for on deck use.

Product Care

100% natural rubber compound

Product Review: Gill Marine Footwear

By: Zeke Quezada, ASA Equipment , Partners , Product Review

I don’t look good in boots.  It’s a fact that boots on me look ridiculous and that is mainly because I sail in shorts year round.  With that said when Gill Marine sent over some of their gear for me to test out I wondered if I would be willing to alter my appearance for a product review.

Of course I would, I’m a professional, so I still attempted to walk around in the boots for feel, comfort and general idea of what you could expect while wearing shorts.  You can imagine the looks I got on the docks.

I should start by saying that eventually, I put on the Gill Marine Coastal Trousers, and these boots pair well with this foul weather gear.  The Coastal Trousers features their XPEL fabric technology that guarantees you will stay dry along with fully taped seams and the fit that keeps you comfortable, dry, and looking quite dashing!

These Gill Marine Boots and Deck Shoes were tested while sailing, at the dock, and while performing a few other activities such as washing down the deck, cleaning my neighbors pool and a 3 mile run. (Explanation to follow)  There was some horseplay with a water hose and one of my family members took the waterproof testing to an extreme level.  Have you ever been told to not run on a wet, slippery surface? Well, we did that too.

The Gill Marine Footwear

Before I begin to describe these products it is important to note that the Offshore Boot and the Tall Yachting Boot kept my feet dry under intense pressure to get them to fail. They saw water action in various forms that would replicate any extremely wet sail day short of going overboard.

Gill Marine provided a pair of Waterproof Boat Socks to use while testing the boots.  I cannot stress enough how much you will need these socks for comfort when utilizing sailing boots.  You should know that these socks are so comfortable that you will be wearing them around the house, in bed and when you are on the hook and simply calling it a day. The socks are waterproof and their long length make them ideal for boots.

Gill Marine Offshore Boot

tall yachting boots

  • External Gaitor for added waterproof protection
  • Non-slip, non-marking soles for extraordinary grip
  • Neoprene inner thermal lining
  • Reinforced heel, toe and in step that lends plenty of support with quick movements

If there is one thing that may have been an issue with the Gill Marine Offshore Boot is the thermal lining as these boots were warm. I was testing them on a day that hovered at 68 degrees and I was wearing the long socks. I also felt the need to run around like a madman trying to test the non-skid ability of these boots. On the deck, these boots hold firm and provide good support when planting and making lateral movements. The gaitor fits snugly around my calf and it has a drawstring to tighten or loosen the fit.  I utilized these for a very wet job of cleaning a pool and they kept my feet warm even as water was being sprayed at me. Wearing these boots without socks initially felt comfortable but eventually led to a swampy boot. Again, they will keep your feet warm and comfortable.

Tall Yachting Boot

tall yachting boots

  • 100% natural rubber compound
  • Padded Tie Top
  • Removable inner soles that work well with personal orthotics

This is a no-nonsense boot that will keep you dry while working on deck or on the dock.  Paired with long socks the Tall Yachting Boot will also keep your feet warm.  The padded top keeps them comfortable when performing tasks that require bending, squatting, or twisting. The soles of these boots are non-skid and they hold well on most any deck.  I attempted a skid on slick cement and they held. If you get sprayed with water the drawstring has to be pulled in tight or you will get moist.  They are not as breathable so paired with the coastal trouser these boots are up to the task of keeping you dry.  These boots are also very good for wet jobs on the dock when you just want your feet to stay dry. Oh, they don’t look that bad if you are wearing shorts. Go ahead, try it.

Mawgan Trainer

tall yachting boots

  • Non-slip, non-marking slip resistant shoe
  • Comfortable removable Air-cell insoles
  • Water expulsion channels for use in wet conditions

The Mawgan Trainers are comfortable, versatile, and perform incredibly well when wet. They dry quickly and your feet are stable even when entirely soaked. These shoes feel like running shoes that are meant for the deck of a performance sailboat.  They hold well on wet decks and they give you ample support when making lateral movements on deck.  I ran three miles with these shoes with no socks on. I expected blisters but instead was shocked at how comfortable they were. Don’t get me wrong, they are not designed for running but they are designed to help you move around the deck in wet conditions. I dunked them in the ocean and went about my business. This is the sneaker that boat lovers have always wanted. I am wearing them right now!

What we know about the container ship that crashed into the Baltimore bridge

  • The ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday was the Singapore-flagged Dali.
  • The container ship had been chartered by Maersk, the Danish shipping company.
  • Two people were recovered from the water but six remain missing, authorities said.

Insider Today

A container ship crashed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing its collapse into the Patapsco River.

A livestream showed vehicles traveling on the Francis Scott Key Bridge just moments before the impact at 1:28 a.m. ET.

Baltimore first responders called the situation a "developing mass casualty event" and a "dire emergency," per The Associated Press.

James Wallace, chief of the Baltimore Fire Department, said in a press conference that two people had been recovered from the water.

One was uninjured, but the other was transported to a local trauma center in a "very serious condition."

Wallace said up to 20 people were thought to have fallen into the river and some six people were still missing.

Richard Worley, Baltimore's police chief, said there was "no indication" the collision was purposeful or an act of terrorism.

Wes Moore, the governor of Maryland, declared a state of emergency around 6 a.m. ET. He said his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary.

"We are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," Moore added.

Understanding why the bridge collapsed could have implications for safety, in both the shipping and civil engineering sectors.

The container ship is the Singapore-flagged Dali, which is about 984 feet long, and 157 feet wide, per a listing on VesselFinder.

An unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report said that the ship "lost propulsion" as it was leaving port, ABC News reported.

The crew notified officials that they had lost control and warned of a possible collision, the report said, per the outlet.

The Dali's owner is listed as Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based firm, and its manager is listed as Synergy Marine, which is also headquartered in Singapore.

Shipping news outlet TradeWinds reported that Grace Ocean confirmed the Dali was involved in the collapse, but is still determining what caused the crash.

Related stories

Staff for Grace Ocean declined to comment on the collision when contacted by Business Insider.

"All crew members, including the two pilots have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," Synergy Marine said in a statement.

The company did not respond to a request for further comment from BI.

'Horrified'

Maersk chartered the Dali, with a schedule for the ship on its website.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," the Danish shipping company said in a statement.

Maersk added: "We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed."

Per ship tracking data, the Dali left Baltimore on its way to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, at around 1 a.m., about half an hour before the crash.

The Port of Baltimore is thought to be the largest in the US for roll-on/roll-off ships carrying trucks and trailers.

Barbara Rossi, associate professor of engineering science at the University of Oxford, told BI the force of the impact on one of the bridge's supporting structures "must have been immense" to lead to the collapse.

Dr Salvatore Mercogliano, a shipping analyst and maritime historian at Campbell University, told BI: "It appears Dali left the channel while outbound. She would have been under the control of the ship's master with a Chesapeake Bay pilot onboard to advise the master.

"The deviation out of the channel is probably due to a mechanical issue as the ship had just departed the port, but you cannot rule out human error as that was the cause of the Ever Forward in 2022 just outside of Baltimore."

He was referring to the incident two years ago when the container ship became grounded for a month in Chesapeake Bay after loading up cargo at the Port of Baltimore.

The US Coast Guard found the incident was caused by pilot error, cellphone use, and "inadequate bridge resource management."

Claudia Norrgren, from the maritime research firm Veson Nautical, told BI: "The industry bodies who are here to protect against incidents like this, such as the vessel's flag state, classification society, and regulatory bodies, will step in and conduct a formal investigation into the incident. Until then, it'll be very hard for anyone to truly know what happened on board."

This may not have been the first time the Dali hit a structure.

In 2016, maritime blogs such as Shipwreck Log and ship-tracking site VesselFinder posted videos of what appears to be the stern of the same, blue-hulled container vessel scraping against a quay in Antwerp.

A representative for the Port of Antwerp told BI the Dali did collide with a quay there eight years ago but couldn't "give any information about the cause of the accident."

The Dali is listed as being built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.

Moscow-City: 7 surprising facts about the Russian capital’s business center

tall yachting boots

1. Guinness World Record in highlining

tall yachting boots

The record was set in 2019 by a team of seven athletes from Russia, Germany, France and Canada. They did it on September 8, on which the ‘Moscow-City Day’ is celebrated. The cord was stretched at the height of 350 m between the ‘OKO’ (“Eye”) and ‘Neva Towers’ skyscrapers. The distance between them is 245 m. The first of the athletes to cross was Friede Kuhne from Germany. The athletes didn't just walk, but also performed some daredevil tricks. Their record is 103 meters higher than the previous one set in Mexico City in December 2016.

tall yachting boots

2. Domination of Europe's top-10 highest skyscrapers

7 out of 10 Europe’s highest skyscrapers are located in Moscow-City. Earlier, the  ‘Federation Tower’ complex’s ‘Vostok’ (“East”) skyscraper was the considered the tallest in Europe.

Left to right: the lower of the ‘Neva Towers’ (296 m), Commerzbank Tower in Frankfurt (300 m), Gorod Stolits (“City of Capitals”) Moscow tower (302 m), Eurasia tower (309 m), The Shard’ skyscraper in London (310 m), Mercury City Tower (339 m), Neva Towers (345 m).

However, in 2018, the construction of the 462 meter tall ‘Lakhta Center’ in Saint-Petersburg was completed, pushing ‘Vostok’ (374 m) into 2nd place. The 3rd place is taken by OKO’s southern tower (354 m).

3. The unrealized ‘Rossiya’ tower

tall yachting boots

If all the building plans of Moscow-City were realized, the ‘Lakhta Center’ in St. Petersburg wouldn't have a chance to be Europe's highest skyscraper. Boris Tkhor, the architect who designed the concept of Moscow-City, had planned for the ‘Rossiya’ tower to be the tallest. In his project, it was a 600 meter tall golden cylindrical skyscraper ending with a spire that was inspired by traditional Russian bell towers. Then, the project was reinvented by famous British architect Sir Norman Foster. He had designed ‘Rossiya’ as a pyramid ending with a spire. The skyscraper itself would have been 612 meters tall, and the height including the spire would have reached 744,5 meters (for comparison, the ‘Burj Khalifa’ in Dubai, UAE, would have been just 83,5 meters taller). Unfortunately, the investors faced a lot of economic problems, due to the 2008 financial crisis, so the ‘Rossiya’ skyscraper was never built. A shopping mall and the ‘Neva Towers’ complex was constructed at its place in 2019.

4. Changed appearance of ‘Federation Tower’

tall yachting boots

In its first project, the ‘Federation Tower’ was designed to resemble a ship with a mast and two sails. The mast was to be represented by a tall glass spire with passages between the towers. It was planned to make a high-speed lift in it. The top of the spire was going to be turned into an observation deck. But the ship lost its mast in the middle of its construction. Experts at the Moscow-city Museum based in the ‘Imperia’ (“Empire”) tower say, that the construction of the spire was stopped, firstly, due to fire safety reasons and secondly, because it posed a threat to helicopter flights – the flickering glass of the spire could potentially blind the pilots. So, the half-built construction was disassembled. However, an observation deck was opened in the ‘Vostok’ tower.

5. Open windows of ‘Federation Tower’

tall yachting boots

We all know that the windows of the upper floors in different buildings don’t usually open. Experts say that it’s not actually for people’s safety. Falling from a big height is likely to be fatal in any building. The actual reason is the ventilation system. In a skyscraper, it’s managed with a mechanical system, and the building has its own climate. But in the ‘Zapad’ (“West”) tower of the ‘Federation Tower’ complex, the windows can open. The 62nd and last floor of the tower are taken up by a restaurant called ‘Sixty’. There, the windows are equipped with a special hydraulic system. They open for a short period of time accompanied by classical music, so the guests can take breathtaking photos of Moscow.

6. Broken glass units of ‘Federation Tower’

tall yachting boots

The guests of the ‘Sixty’ restaurant at the top of the ‘Zapad’ tower can be surprised to see cracked glass window panes. It is particularly strange, if we take into consideration the special type of this glass. It is extremely solid and can’t be broken once installed. For example, during experiments people threw all sorts of heavy items at the windows, but the glass wouldn’t break. The broken glass units of ‘Zapad’ were already damaged during shipment . As each of them is curved in its own way to make the tower’s curvature smooth, making a new set of window panes and bringing them to Russia was deemed too expensive . Moreover, the investors had financial problems (again, due to the 2008 financial crisis), so the ‘Vostok’ tower even stood unfinished for several years. Eventually, the cracked window panes were installed in their place.

7. The highest restaurant in Europe

tall yachting boots

‘Birds’, another restaurant in Moscow-City, is remarkable for its location. It was opened at the end of 2019 on the 84th floor of the ‘OKO’ complex’s southern tower. Guests at the restaurant can enjoy an amazing panoramic view at a height of 336 meters. On January 28, the experts of ‘Kniga Recordov Rossii’ (“Russian Records Book”) declared ‘Birds’ the highest restaurant in Europe, a step toward an application for a Guinness World Record.

Six presumed dead after cargo ship crash levels Baltimore bridge

BALTIMORE — A major Baltimore bridge collapsed like a house of cards early Tuesday after it was struck by a container ship, sending six people to their deaths in the dark waters below, and closing one of the country’s busiest ports.

By nightfall, the desperate search for six people who were working on the bridge and vanished when it fell apart had become a grim search for bodies.

“We do not believe that we’re going to find any of these individuals still alive,” Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon N. Gilreath said.

Jeffrey Pritzker, executive vice president of Brawner Builders, said earlier that one of his workers had survived. He did not release their names.

Up until then, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore had held out hope that the missing people might be found even as law enforcement warned that the frigid water and the fact that there had been no sign of them since 1:30 a.m. when the ship struck Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Moore expressed heartbreak after officials suspended the search for survivors.

"Our heart goes out to the families," he said. "I can’t imagine how painful today has been for these families, how painful these hours have been have been for these families."

It was a crushing blow to the loved ones of the missing men, who had waited for hours at a Royal Farms convenience store near the entrance of the bridge for word of their fate.

Follow live updates on the Baltimore bridge collapse

The tragic chain of events began early Tuesday when the cargo ship Dali notified authorities that it had lost power and issued a mayday moments before the 984-foot vessel slammed into a bridge support at a speed of 8 knots, which is about 9 mph.

Moore declared a state of emergency while rescue crews using sonar detected at least five vehicles in the frigid 50-foot-deep water: three passenger cars, a cement truck and another vehicle of some kind. Authorities do not believe anyone was inside the vehicles.

Investigators quickly concluded that it was an accident and not an act of terrorism.

Ship was involved in another collision

Earlier, two people were rescued from the water, Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said. One was in good condition and refused treatment, he said. The other was seriously injured and was being treated in a trauma center.

Moore said other drivers might have been in the water had it not been for those who, upon hearing the mayday, blocked off the bridge and kept other vehicles from crossing.

“These people are heroes,” Moore said. “They saved lives.”

Nearly eight years ago, the Dali was involved in an accident. In July 2016, it struck a quay at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium, damaging the quay.

The nautical commission investigated the accident, but the details of the inquiry were not immediately clear Tuesday.

The Dali is operated and managed by Synergy Group. In a statement, the company said that two port pilots were at the helm during Tuesday's crash and that all 22 crew members onboard were accounted for.

The Dali was chartered by the Danish shipping giant Maersk, which said it would have no choice but to send its ships to other nearby ports with the Port of Baltimore closed.

The bridge, which is about a mile and a half long and carries Interstate 695 over the Patapsco River southeast of Baltimore, was "fully up to code," Moore said.

National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said that her agency will lead the investigation and that a data recorder on the ship could provide more information.

"But right now we're focusing on the people, on the families," she said. "The rest can wait."

President Joe Biden vowed to rebuild the bridge and send federal funds.

"This is going to take some time," the president warned. "The people of Baltimore can count on us though to stick with them, at every step of the way, till the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt."

Speaking in Baltimore, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg echoed the president's promise.

"This is no ordinary bridge," he said. "This is one of the cathedrals of American infrastructure."

But Buttigieg warned that replacing the bridge and reopening the port will take time and money and that it could affect supply chains.

The Port of Baltimore, the 11th largest in the U.S., is the busiest port for car imports and exports, handling more than 750,000 vehicles in 2023 alone, according to data from the Maryland Port Administration.

Writer David Simon, a champion of Baltimore who set his TV crime drama "The Wire" on the streets of the city he once covered as a reporter, warned online that the people who will suffer the most are those whose livelihoods depend on the port.

"Thinking first of the people on the bridge," Simon posted on X . "But the mind wanders to a port city strangling. All the people who rely on ships in and out."

Timeline of crash

Dramatic video captured the moment at 1:28 a.m. Tuesday when the Dali struck a support and sent the bridge tumbling into the water. A livestream showed cars and trucks on the bridge just before the strike. The ship did not sink, and its lights remained on.

Investigators said in a timeline that the Dali's lights suddenly shut off four minutes earlier before they came back on and that then, at 1:25 a.m. dark black smoke began billowing from the ship's chimney.

A minute later, at 1:26 a.m., the ship appeared to turn. And in the minutes before it slammed into the support, the lights flickered again.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said the workers on the bridge were repairing concrete ducts when the ship crashed into the structure.

At least seven workers were pouring concrete to fix potholes on the roadway on the bridge directly above where the ship hit, said James Krutzfeldt, a foreman.

Earlier, the Coast Guard said it had received a report that a “motor vessel made impact with the bridge” and confirmed it was the Dali, a containership sailing under a Singaporean flag that was heading for Sri Lanka.

Bobby Haines, who lives in Dundalk in Baltimore County, said he felt the impact of the bridge collapse from his house nearby.

"I woke up at 1:30 this morning and my house shook, and I was freaking out," he said. "I thought it was an earthquake, and to find out it was a bridge is really, really scary."

Families of bridge workers wait for updates

Earlier in the day, relatives of the construction crew waited for updates on their loved ones.

Marian Del Carmen Castellon told Telemundo her husband, Miguel Luna, 49, was working on the bridge.

“They only tell us that we have to wait and that they can’t give us information,” she said.

Castellon said she was "devastated, devastated because our heart is broken, because we don’t know how they have been rescued yet. We are just waiting for the news."

Luna's co-worker Jesús Campos said he felt crushed, too.

“It hurts my heart to see what is happening. We are human beings, and they are my folks,” he said.

Campos told The Baltimore Banner that the missing men are from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.

Active search and rescue ends

The Coast Guard said it was suspending the active search-and-rescue effort at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"Coast Guard’s not going away, none of our partners are going away, but we’re just going to transition into a different phase," Gilreath said at a news conference.

Maryland State Police Superintendent Roland L. Butler, Jr., said it was moving to a recovery operation. Changing conditions have made it dangerous for divers, he said.

Butler pledged to "do our very best to recover those six missing people," but the conditions are difficult.

"If we look at how challenging it is at a simple motor vehicle crash to extract an individual, I'm sure we can all imagine how much harder it is to do it in inclement weather, when it's cold, under the water, with very limited to no visibility," he said.

"There's a tremendous amount of debris in the water," which can include sharp metal and other hazards, and that could take time, Butler said.

'A long road in front of us'

Built in 1977 and referred to locally as the Key Bridge, the structure was later named after the author of the American national anthem.

The bridge is more than 8,500 feet long, or 1.6 miles. Its main section spans 1,200 feet, and it was one of the longest continuous truss bridges in the world upon its completion, according to the National Steel Bridge Alliance .

About 31,000 vehicles a day use the bridge, which equals 11.3 million vehicles per year, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

The river and the Port of Baltimore are both key to the shipping industry on the East Coast, generating more than $3.3 billion a year and directly employing more than 15,000 people.

Asked what people in Baltimore can expect going forward, the state's transportation secretary said it is too early to tell.

"Obviously we reached out to a number of engineering companies, so obviously we have a long road in front of us," Wiedefeld said.

Meet Moscow’s Take On The Twisting Tower: Evolution Tower

tall yachting boots

Evolution Tower is a twisting 255 meter tall skyscraper located in ‘Moscow City’, Moscow, an initiative by the Russian government to create a new business district on an old industrial site. The twisting tower provides approximately 85,000 m² of retail and leisure facilities and 85,000 m² of offices and public functions. It is the twelfth tallest building in Russia and the 20 th tallest in Europe.

The dramatic form of the tower was designed by architects RMJM in collaboration with Scottish artist Karen Forbes. The double helix DNA inspired form has become an iconic landmark in the Moscow skyline, as the city has never been known for its skyscrapers or architectural identity. The form is also reminiscent of two ribbons wrapping around each other. Each of the 51 floors of the tower is rotated 3 degrees relative to the previous one, so the building is “swirled” by more than 150 degrees. In this way, the central core and eight columns with 15-meter spans between the axes remain strictly vertical all the way up. The spiral geometry is repeated only by four corners of the building. The top of the tower is crowned with two asymmetric “arches” spanning 41 m, visually uniting the two opposite facades.

The facade of the tower boasts a near complete covering of LED lights, this media façade is the largest in all of Asia. The scale and the form of the building made the installation and management of the LED system quite a challenge, thus the building also boasts one of the most sophisticated lighting management and control systems on the planet.

The plot covers an area of 2.55 hectares, of which most are landscaped into a terrace while the rest is used for the tower. The tower and the terrace are built on a three-level stylobate designated the Evolution Gallery with an area of 28,000 square metres (300,000 sq ft). There are exits from the tower that lead directly to the nearby metro station. This podium features a shopping mall and the roof is landscaped to provide additional space for users to unwind in the midst of fountains, terraces and cafes, thus providing a strong connection with the larger urban sphere.
