The Gallant Lady Tender With The Yacht In The Background

A design that was considered unfathomable in the mid-1990s changed how yachts were constructed thanks to the innovation of Jim Moran and JM Family Enterprises. The signature of Gallant Lady is three two-story windows. Believe it or not, Gallant Lady is not one but many yachts owned and operated by the private South Florida corporation. Here is everything you need to know about Gallant Lady Yacht.

Who Owns The Gallant Lady Yacht

When asked who owns Gallant Lady Yacht know that you are referring to more than one vessel sharing the same name. The late Mr. Jim Moran, a businessman from Chicago, established JM Family Enterprises in Deerfield Beach. Since Mr. Moran’s passing, the Gallant Lady yacht owner 2021 is JM Family Enterprises.

JM Family Enterprises is a distributor of Toyota vehicles throughout the Southeastern portions of the United States. Since its inception, the company has been wildly successful and has owned a substantial number of yachts since 1968.

Today, the company employs over 4,000 people and boasts a marine and aviation department. The marine and aviation departments focus specifically on the maintenance, operation, and hosting of guests aboard the series of yachts and jets.

Despite Jim Moran founding the company and being known as Jim Moran yacht owner, he also began a series of charitable organizations within the South Florida community.

How Many Vessels Are In The Gallant Lady Fleet

The number of yachts under the JM Family umbrella varies based on the year, as they are notorious for buying and selling vessels.

On average, the company owns between three and five vessels exceeding thirty feet in length. When it comes the length the largest yacht in the fleet measures 172 feet. The yacht complete construction in 1996 by Feadship.

In addition to the large vessel, two to three tenders are an intricate part of the fleet. All vessels are name Gallant Lady.

How Much Is The Gallant Lady Yacht Worth

The yachts vary in value ranging from the hundred thousand dollar mark in access of thirty million dollars.

Today, the two most valuable yachts under the company ownership are a 168 foot Feadship constructed in 2007 and a 172 foot Feadship constructed in 1996. Despite the similarities in appearance on the outside, the interiors and materials used in construction are vastly different.

The 172 and 168-foot Feadships are constructed with steel hulls; however, the structure forming the upper decks is built opposite as far as materials are concerned.  A key difference between the vessels is the formation of the super structure. One utilizes steel while the other aluminum.

In addition to the vast difference in weight when comparing steel versus aluminum, additional efforts were made to reduce the draft.

Again, when comparing the two yachts despite the nearly identical appearance. Lightweight materials makeup the yachts interior to allow the vessel to enter more shallow waters.

Can You Charter The Gallant Lady

The Gallant Lady yachts are not available for charter. In the yachting industry, the vast majority of are available for charter to help cover annual operating costs between fuel, maintenance, crew, and other expenses.

Charters operate significantly different than privately owned vessels. Despite Gallant Lady being operated by a corporation. The people chartering the watercraft are the decision-makers for destinations, food, and entertainment. Essentially, depending on how much the guest will spend, the more extravagant the journey is.

Guests of the vessels are by invitation only and include business partners, company associates, and donors to charitable organizations operated by JM Family Enterprises. Unlike charters, the guests are flown to where the boat is docked or anchored and guided as to daily experiences while aboard. However, this does not mean that invitees lack the novelties of the most exclusive charters.

The Feadships accommodate up to ten guests with more than 11 crew members per yacht. Guest cabin space includes four staterooms and one main suite on each of the two Gallant Lady yachts.

What Is The Gallant Lady Yacht Location

South Florida between Deerfield Beach and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida are home to Gallant Lady yachts.

As you can imagine, vessels measuring more than 150 feet require deep water marinas with ample dockage space. One of the largest marinas is Bahia Mar, which provides dockage space when the vessels are not traveling.

When the Gallant Lady boats are traveling they stop in destinations including the Bahamas, Caribbean, Jacksonville, Charleston, and the Northeast.

The smaller Gallant Lady yachts are docked at varying South Florida marinas. When traveling, one to two vessels support the yacht by taking guests fishing on the Viking Gallant Lady fishing boat, cruising, to restaurants, snorkeling, and sightseeing.

Considering the number of boats in the fleet, the crew is substantial in size. Watercraft require significant maintenance; therefore, the crew constantly shifts to ensure all vessels are in tip-top shape.

Gallant Lady Yachts Are Premier Yachts Under The Umbrella Of A Superb Company

JM Family is notorious for signature yachts thanks to Jim Moran yacht owner. The yachts include black-tinted two story windows against bright white paintwork. The company is top notch when it comes to the way it treats its associates including those who host guests in the marine department. The next time you’re gazing from the beach in Georgia, South Carolina, and North you may see the vessels passing by.

Long before  JM Family Enterprises, Inc.  was recognized as a world leader in the automotive business, Jim Moran had already made a significant impact in the industry and in the South Florida community. With a career that spanned more than six decades, Jim was truly an automotive pioneer. Before his passing on April 24, 2007, Jim's lifetime achievements were recognized by his 1996 Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans Award and his 2005 induction into the Automotive Hall of Fame, the single greatest honor in the international motor vehicle industry.

Born on August 8, 1918, Jim's career started as a young man who had very little money, but he made up for it with a lot of hard work and a strong desire to succeed. In 1939, after saving every penny he could, he put together $360 to purchase a Sinclair gas station that soon became the largest volume outlet in Chicago. After serving his country in World War II, Jim returned to Chicago and sold his first car - a used 1936 Ford Coupe - for $275 that he had reconditioned himself. A whole new world opened up for him that day.

Jim Moran receiving his 2005 Automotive Hall of Fame Induction.

Building a Business – Chicago to South Florida

From that first used car sold at the Sinclair station, Jim began to build an amazing chronicle of achievements in the automobile industry. By 1946, Jim had established a Hudson dealership in Chicago Heights, Illinois. His success there brought him an opportunity to expand near downtown Chicago, and in 1948, he celebrated the grand opening of Courtesy Motors, named to symbolize the way he wanted his customers treated. It became the largest in sales volume within one year. Jim's desire for innovation and customer satisfaction led him to become the first auto dealer to successfully offer cars for sale on television and appear in his own live commercials — quite an accomplishment in 1948.

Courtesy Conditioning Assembly Line, 1960

His sales topped several million dollars by the time he turned 30 and with a knack for showmanship, his commercials made him a celebrity throughout the Chicago area where he was recognized as TV's "Jim Moran the Courtesy Man." He sponsored three live shows a week, handling the master of ceremony duties and all the live commercials himself. Jim was the first to present a full-length movie on television in 1949, even though the critics said nobody would watch.  The Courtesy Hour  and  The Old Red Barn Dance  became big hits and received TV Forecast awards for every year they were on TV. His weekly variety shows provided another outlet for the sleek new and reconditioned cars he was selling at Courtesy Motors.

He was also the first to equip his cars with seat belts, at no charge to the customer. Even with the responsibilities of owning the dealership, for years Jim personally sold more than 1,800 cars annually — an extraordinary average of five cars every day of the year! Jim even established the first "on the spot" new car delivery system that allowed customers to drive away in their new cars within 30 minutes of the purchase.

Jim started reconditioning cars in the late 1940s and became the first dealer to offer a clearly written and understandable warranty on used cars and called it the "Courtesy 100% Unconditional Guarantee." After the Courtesy Conditioning Assembly Line at Courtesy Motors opened in 1949, the facility reconditioned as many as 800 cars a month. Each car would move along an assembly line for individual steps in the reconditioning process — brakes, generators, starters, motor tune-up, tires, batteries and a final inspection — before going to the lot for sale. The assembly line was housed in a 60,000 square foot building and had 71 people working in it.

Jim remained with Hudson until 1955 when he launched Courtesy Ford. Within 30 days it became the world's largest Ford dealership. Jim became a regular presence on TV during the 1950s and 1960s, and in addition to his television time, he also promoted his dealership by sponsoring the Lake Michigan Swim Challenge, an annual open water endurance swim across the lake.

At 46, Jim was diagnosed with cancer and told he had six months to a year to live. He "retired" to Florida and fought a difficult battle with the disease. Jim luckily beat the 10% chance he was given to survive and returned to his passion of selling cars. He opened Jim Moran's Pontiac City in Homestead in 1968. In 1970, Jim was awarded the franchise for the Pontiac dealership in Hollywood, which became JM Pontiac and for the next 20 years was the largest Pontiac dealership in the world.

Jim came to a crossroads that would change his life when he was approached by Toyota Motor Sales with the possibility of distributing Toyotas. He was impressed with the quality after his first test-drive in a Corona RT-52 Coupe in early 1968. At a preliminary meeting with the Executive Vice President of Toyota Motor Company, Seisi Kato, in Miami, Mr. Kato questioned Jim, asking, "What would you do, Moran-san, if I shipped you 10,000 cars?" To this question he replied instinctively, "I'd sell them." On October 26, 1968, during his first visit to Japan, Jim was awarded the franchise to distribute Toyotas, and Southeast Toyota Distributors (SET) was born. Other automotive-related businesses followed, including parent company JM Family Enterprises - one of the largest, most innovative and diversified companies in the automotive industry today.

Jan Moran, Mr. Eiji Toyoda, Mr. & Mrs. Seisi Kato and Jim Moran in Tokyo, Japan, 1981

In 1969, Southeast Toyota had 42 dealers in a five-state region and revolutionized the automobile industry with the introduction of the 33-ASR Teletype, the first computer network in the automotive industry to link dealers with the distributorship.

With Jim’s determination to move the company forward, by 1970, SET had grown to 71 dealers and registered a sharp increase in sales in the first quarter, achieving an import market penetration of 8.1% and bringing sales expectations to 20,000 Toyotas for the year. Southeast Toyota’s record-breaking sales propelled Toyota in 1975 above Volkswagen for the first time in the United States. In 1982, Jim celebrated when the SET distributorship and its then 151 dealers sold their 1 millionth Toyota.

TLC (Tender Loving Care) Corporation – later becoming JM&A Group — was established in 1978 to offer extended service contracts to SET customers.

In 1981, World Omni Financial Corp. was formed and became the first captive automotive finance company for an import car company.

The Toyota tradition continued with the growth of Lexus, a luxury car born from a discussion between Dr. S. Toyoda and Jim Moran in 1984. JM Lexus, established in 1989, quickly became the #1 Lexus dealership in the United States.

Jim Moran: The Courtesy Man

Jim Moran with Southeast Toyota associates in Jacksonville, Florida in 2000

From 1994-1996, Jim wrote his autobiography  Jim Moran: The Courtesy Man . In his own words, "I did not want to write this book, thinking who would want to read it, and was extremely reluctant to do so. I resisted writing it for over five years. Some of my family and some of my very best friends - including Bob Barnett - insisted on it. Dr. Toyoda asked me to write it and to do so with an eye toward making it a movie. While I respect him greatly, I spent more of my life interrupting movies for commercials than doing things that would make my life an exciting Hollywood script.

As I see it, there's not much in my life that people would really want to read about. There have been ups and downs and not much action. I'm lucky to have spent nearly my whole life in a business I really like. Almost all people who hate their work fail at it. Some people love their work and still do badly at it because they don't know how to maintain balance.

What finally swayed me to write this book was feeling the obligation to write our book and not my book - a chronicle of the great people whom I've had a chance to work with over the years, especially those at JM Family Enterprises and Southeast Toyota. It's my deep hope that "our book" will document some of the most memorable contributions which our people have made to the evolution of the American automobile industry — and those contributions by the people I work with have been many."

Hello Everybody! Anyone familiar wth JM Family Enterprises out of Lauderdale? I ask because I'm considering a career change in the near future and they always seem to be advertising for mates. Seems like an ideal setup to get my foot in the door. I have been in aviation for the past 6 years, and always felt if things didn't work out I'd head back to the water (was a mate in college and hold an OUPV). A recent opportunity has persuaded me to give aviation another year as a flight instructor, but if things don't work out I'd like to move on. In the mean time, I'll be working on a casino boat while I teach so I can up my lic to a 100ton master. thanks everyone and merry xmas

JM is Jim *****. It seems to be a good position. You rotate amoung the boats and they fly you in and out of florida to wherever the boat is located. I took BRM or 200T with one of their mates and they seemed to like it. You are gaurenteed time off from what I understand. I know you used to have to be a florida resident to be employed by them. Good luck. nas

I know they have every benifiet you can think of for working there. They do work hard and they do have constent guest. Also all deck members are refferred to as mates and then work with numbers in there rank like 3rd mate. They do fly in and out the crew with the owners provate jet but only from S. florida to the boat. You have to have a home base near FtL becuase you will be expected to work on some of there docked vessels like a 9 to 5 job with out quarters provided. It all definetely works for some and not all.

Aviation, why not try to get into JM's aviation department? They have several jets that I hear are constantly busy. And they're not only for executives, but others who need to fly between JM facilities (north FL and other states). They do advertise often for mates, and I think there is an active position open now. And they are/have been listed as one of the best places to work. If you don't like what you're doing, change it. If you want to stay in aviation, drop me an IM. My company has been looking for an aviation person, i think a co-pilot or such (will have to check and see if position is still open). Good luck.
Thanks for all the input fellas. Funny thing is, a couple years ago I was in management with a large chain flight school with a facility in Pompano Beach. While I was down there on a short trip, I met a student working on his instrument rating who was a yacht captain..his company was paying for his training. We started shooting the ****, and he gave me his business card. I'm almost positive he was with JM, as his card said he was Captain of the Gallant Lady. When he told me how much his mate made all I could do was gasp.. was like 60K or something. I wanted to hit him up for a job right on the spot, but at the time I didn't think it was appropriate given he was a client. thanks again

The global megarich are paying up to $2 million a week for superyacht rentals but smaller boat charters are down

Luxury yachts in the harbour of Saint Tropez on August 20, 2017 in Saint-Tropez, France.

Sales of luxury yachts may be down but the world’s megarich have found another, more instantaneous way to get their high seas kicks — chartering a swanky boat instead.

Total chartered days for yachts longer than 50 meters has increased since 2020, according to  IYC , a global firm specializing in the sale and charters of luxury yachts. Vessels between 60 to 70 meters posted the most growth last year, at 10%, whereas shorter yachts aren’t nearly as popular as before.

IYC Chief Executive Officer  Raphael Sauleau  said he’s seeing more customers willing to pay a higher premium for the ultimate ocean experience. Clients are willing to pay more for a so-called advanced provisioning allowance, which covers on-board expenses like food and service, of up to 40% compared to the standard 30% of the total charter fee, he said.

New customers are coming to yachting “with an appetite for larger yachts,” Sauleau said. Compared with smaller vessels, these floating villas come with more privacy, better facilities and a larger crew. A bigger range of large models that’s become available over the past three years has also contributed to higher bookings, he added.

Fraser Yachts , a major international broker, is experiencing a similar phenomenon, receiving 7% more charter bookings for yachts over 60 meters in 2023 versus prior years. Across yachts of all sizes however, the number of charter days reported last year was 19% down on 2021.

It’s a quirk that would seem to chime with the trend of super luxury brands defying a broader luxury slowdown. Hermes International SCA, for example, saw Chinese buyers  snap up its products . Hermes typically caters to the most affluent customers, making it more resilient in a challenging luxury goods market.

At the same time, sales of floating palaces are waning, the Superyacht Times said in a  report  in March. Sales of superyachts, generally defined as boats longer than 30 meters, contracted 20% in 2023 from 2022 and are well down on 2021, when many rich people splurged on boats to travel in a safe and exclusive way.

Stacy Fischer-Rosenthal , the president of luxury travel and lifestyle consultancy Fischer Travel Enterprises, said she’s expecting to help clients charter at least 10 yachts this year. Most of the interest is around megayachts — or yachts above 60 meters — and prices range from about $700,000 to $2 million a week, she said.

Wealthy people may be shying away from outright purchases due to geopolitical worries and global conflicts.

Fear of more widespread fighting in the Middle East and Russian’s war in Ukraine “seem to make some buyers nervous, particularly those in the market for very large new builds,” the Superyacht Times said.
