A Closer Look at David and Victoria Beckham's Yacht SeaFair

For years, David and Victoria Beckham have been photographed visiting their celebrity friends' luxury yacht boats and renting a luxury yacht for various trips. In fact, the Beckhams are often seen hanging out on yachts with their children in Miami, the Mediterranean, and even as far as Bali.

It's not unusual to see people like David and Victoria Beckham hanging out on their celebrity friends' yachts, particularly if they can't afford their own yachts. However, the former Posh Spice and MLS team player definitely make a high-earning pair among their social group.

Perhaps that's why it's not surprising that  the Beckhams aren't content to play on other people's boats  – and who can blame them? They finally purchased a SeaFair yacht of their own, and it's a doozy. This commercial yacht can transform a life and is the kind of boat you'd love to see on a photo shoot.

Here's a look at  David and Victoria Beckham's yacht SeaFair , and the other yachts they've vacationed on. The Beckhams are known as doting parents, so do they spend a lot of quality time on their yachts with their little ones? Let's take a quick look at David & Victoria Beckham's yacht SeaFair to learn more.

Examining the Beckhams SeaFair Yacht

No matter why you're interested in this subject, we can provide you with in-depth information about Victoria and David Beckham's SeaFair yacht. It's the kind of topic that provides a fun and engaging read to certain people. For instance, it's common to see people interested in lifestyle topics browsing through articles like these to learn more about how the richest people in the world live.

Who are David & Victoria Beckham?

David and Victoria Beckham have amassed  an estimated net worth  of $1 billion and have no problem  spending money  on their family, their friends, and themselves. When the couple isn't running their fashion and other brand companies, they're vacationing with their children and celebrity friends, often on a yacht. But who exactly are these people? Let's start by talking about David Beckham.

Let's Check Out David Beckham

David Beckham  is a former soccer player who's competed in many leagues. Throughout the 2000s, he was the standard bearer for British football and the kind of person you just knew would buy a yacht one day. David retired from the Manchester United Football team in 2013.

Since then, he's had many different roles. He is a UNICEF Ambassador and is co-owner of a new MLS team based in Miami, Florida, as well as an English non-league club. This new MLS team has taken up much of his time, but he's also become something of a fashion designer in recent years.

In fact, David Beckham has his own fashion and footwear lines and is a co-owner of several companies. Though perhaps not a fashion designer in and of himself, he has hired some of the best in the world to maintain an attractive and appealing look that makes David Beckham popular even now.

The Inside Scoop on Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham  is primarily known as a member of the former 1990s band the Spice Girls. Victoria Beckham was one of the most popular of these singers and was known as a sophisticated lady. In fact, this sophisticated lady was named "Posh Spice" while she performed with the band.

Victoria Beckham earned the nickname for her sophisticated style with the band. Since then, Posh Spice has kept up with that reputation and become a fashion designer of note. In fact, Victoria Beckham owns her own fashion line and is a constant figure in the fashion world.

David and Victoria Beckham, Power Couple

David Beckham and Victoria Beckham both have several endorsement deals. For David Beckham, these include  a lot of soccer endorsements , as well as fashionable lines. We already know he works with UNICEF, though he already provides support for other charitable organizations.

Victoria Beckham  has multiple endorsements, including Armani, Estee Lauder, and Dolce. She has capitalized on her time as Posh Spice with the Spice Girls to cultivate an image of a cultured and sophisticated lady. It's helped them stay financially solvent and worth a lot of money.

What makes them so interesting is that they've stayed together for over 20 years. In fact, they celebrated their 24th anniversary while on vacation with their four children, Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz, and Harper. They've been seen traveling throughout the Mediterranean and other areas for years.

Furthermore, the Beckhams have homes in Beverly Hills and London. They split their time between these houses, focusing on things like their photoshoot gigs and their appearances elsewhere to stay current and exciting. But what exactly is the deal with their SeaFair yacht?

The SeaFair Yacht

David and Victoria Beckham have enjoyed vacation time with friends and family on so many luxury yachts that they decided to purchase their own rather than renting. Victoria and her husband David wanted to find luxury yachts that they could show off to their friends rather than always renting.

Apparently inspired by the SeaFair Miami mega yacht that they've partied on and David shot a commercial on in 2016, the Beckhams purchased a smaller SeaFair yach t. Victoria and her hubby showed it off to their friends for over a week, renting out visits with  friends and family members .

The yacht is nicknamed "The Sophisticated Lady," no doubt in reference to Victoria, formerly known as "Posh Spice" when she performed with the Spice Girls in the 1990s. We love that nickname because it highlights the fun atmosphere that Victoria Beckham and her hubby David like showing off.

The yacht was purchased for a reported $4 million and is similar in design to the SeaFair Miami. It features plenty of deck space and a roomy interior. There is a gym, galley, and salon. Like many a luxury yacht on the market, it provides more than enough room for friends and family members.

Furthermore, there is plenty of room to host up to eight guests in four guest suites. There are also two cabins for crew members. "The Sophisticated Lady" is 94 feet long and cruises up to 40 mph.

As Victoria Beckham and her husband David tour the world in their luxury yacht, they often spend more than a week with each group, including friends and their children. The Beckhams are known as doting parents who decided to provide their children with a fancy life they didn't have growing up.

When examining a photo of this large commercial yacht, you'll see a few things right away. First, it matches the physical beauty this power pair poses: it simply looks fantastic. Furthermore, this popular pair has been seen on their luxury yacht in London, Florida, Paris, and many other parts of the world.

The SeaFair Miami

No doubt the Beckhams were inspired to purchase their SeaFair yacht when David Beckham chartered the  SeaFair  mega yacht in Miami in 2016 to shoot a commercial for his company Haig Club Whiskey. This beautiful yacht made Victoria's hubby jealous and clearly excited.

Beckham chartered the yacht in 2016 to film the commercial, which showcased the epitome of luxury with a party aboard the SeaFair Yacht with beautiful guests. Since then, he and Victoria enjoyed it before and after their wedding and explored the coast of many parts of the world.

Each of their trip destinations included summer fun along various coast areas, including their amazing,  record-breaking wedding . Obviously, the two eventually decided to cut out the middle person and buy a yacht so that they could handle each trip themselves. In this way, they could get lots of sunshine.

Furthermore, David and Victoria took their youngest children out on this yacht regularly, getting them used to spending time on a lavish yacht. But what exactly makes the SeaFair such a lavish yacht? Let's take a deep look at this amazing yacht to get an idea of why David and Victoria loved it.

Amazing Amenities The Beckhams Couldn't Forget

The Beckhams not only got a lot of sunshine while on this boat. They also spent time with their family, including Brooklyn, Harper, and Cruz. David and his wife Victoria loved taking their family out to Italy, Florida, Spain, and other parts of the world while booking  the biggest SeaFair lavish yacht .

If you've ever been on the SeaFair mega yacht, you'd understand why. It is a charter yacht that can be used as a luxury venue for multiple occasions and events, from business conferences to parties. The supersized yacht was designed by Luiz de Basto and underwent a multi-million dollar makeover.

It received this makeover just before former soccer player David Beckham used it as a venue to film his Haig Club Whiskey ad. After he visited it, he told his wife all about it and told him that they had to get their family on it, even if they wouldn't be buying it. After all, the yacht is worth $40 million.

Think about that for a minute: a power couple that has over $1 billion to their name couldn't afford this yacht but had to rent it instead. It's not just a boat; it's an adventure. The SeaFair has a unique design and plenty of room to party, especially if you have lots of friends you want to hang out with on the water.

The  SeaFair is 228 feet long  and features four deck floors, including a sky deck. There are 11,000 square feet of conference space and $10,000 square feet of entertainment space. Let's face it: there's so much to do that you and your 300 best friends probably couldn't get enough.

In fact, the SeaFair mega yacht can accommodate up to 600 guests in two dining rooms and seven bars. The huge yacht is mainly docked at the InterContinental Hotel in Miami but travels up the coast of Florida to host events. It's no wonder that David Beckham chose SeaFair for his hit commercial.

Recent Trip to Miami

The Beckham family recently took  a much-needed break vacationing  in Miami, Florida, and enjoying time on their yacht. While not quite as big as the massive SeaFair, their smaller version is definitely perfect for Cruz, Harper, Romeo, and Brooklyn. It's a fun and unforgettable way to vacation.

While in Miami, the family was invited to stay at singer Marc Anthony's estate. Anthony is a good friend of the couple and lives in a posh Coral Gables neighborhood of the city. While here, Victoria and David spent time swimming, exercising, and enjoying Marc Anthony's outgoing personality.

For example, they spent time in Anthony's 12-bedroom Mediterranean estate, as well as  enjoying time on their yacht , cruising Biscayne Bay, and spending time in the Everglades. Exploring this exciting city has always been something they've enjoyed doing, including  spending time with Lionel Messi .

Clearly, the two  love their yacht  and plan on spending as much time on it as possible. Wouldn't you? Along with Cruz, Brooklyn, Romeo, and Harper, it seems like they're poised to travel the world. And with their children getting old enough to get married (Brooklyn specifically), it's likely even more members will join them on their big yacht.

Easter Celebration with Marc Anthony

Their most recent trip isn't the first or last time they've visited Anthony in Miami. For example, they visited Anthony in Miami in the spring of 2018 to celebrate Easter. They  brought along their children  (as usual) and had a lot of fun on their yacht with the Latin American singer.

For example, they enjoyed the break relaxing and playing on a yacht. There is plenty of space to relax and play on the 120-foot yacht. The interior features natural wood and white and blue accents. That natural beauty creates an attractive style that makes it an appealing and modern boat.

Within its expansive interior, there is a salon, galley, and dining room, as well as two full bars and five guest suites. There's also plenty of deck space with a wide swim platform, lounging areas, and a Jacuzzi. All these amenities make it very comfortable and enjoyable for visitors.

This trip is also not the first time that the Beckhams  celebrated Easter together . They often post pictures of their kids, including Cruz, Brooklyn, Romeo, and Harper, highlighting their growth and development. Their children seem well-adjusted and not at all spoiled by their parents' wealth.

Other Yacht Excursions

The Beckhams are no strangers to spending vacations on yachts. Back in 2009, they were spotted on  fashion designer  Roberto Cavalli's yacht, Freedom. Obviously, their time on Cavalli's yacht must have worn off, and the two are now enjoying their own yachting experience with their family.

Furthermore, during one long summer, the Beckhams visited the south of France and were invited to join good friend  Elton John , his husband David Furnish, and their children on their 164-ft mega yacht Wabi Sabi. John is well known for his warmth and generosity with people he loves.

As a result, the families had a great time exploring the Côte d'Azur. They checked out plenty of shore destinations, had some fun at various concerts, and spent time exploring the region together. Like all doting parents, they even  brought along their kids  to make the experience even more enjoyable.

Will there be even more reports of these two enjoying their boat together with friends? Well, the celebrity world is a small one and famous people often spend lots of time together on vacations and beyond. Clearly, it's likely that we haven't seen the last of Victoria or David Beckham and their fantastic and unforgettable boat.

Victoria and David Beckham have jetted off on a luxurious holiday where they have been celebrating the new year with their family.

Victoria, 47, has been busy documenting the sun-soaked getaway over on her Instagram page, where she has shared a series of snaps with her 29.5million followers.

The former Spice Girl and her husband David, 46, were joined on their £5million yacht by two of their three sons Romeo, 19, and Cruz, 16, as well as their 10 year old daughter Harper in the week leading up to Brooklyn's wedding.

The yacht has been aptly named Seven, after the former England player's shirt number. It's also the middle name of ten year old daughter.

And the family have been whiling away the hours on a sensational new yacht, worth £5million

The yacht is believed to be 93.5ft and the couple picked it up outside of their £19million Miami penthouse.

An onlooker told The Sun: “David looked ecstatic as he took to sea on board his gleaming boat. He’s wanted a yacht for a long time and couldn’t be happier with his new toy.”

The new luxury vessel features five bedrooms and holds space for ten guests and four crew members.

On the back of the snazzy new Beckham buy, there's a Union Jack flag which was in view as David and Victoria posed for a glamorous snap.

Harper poses onboard the new yacht

Alberto Galassi, chief executive of boat-maker Ferretti said of Becks’s yacht: “There’s so much steel on this boat — and glass. We are surrounded by glass. It’s sort of a little crystal palace.”

He added: “We sell emotions, we sell pleasure, we sell entertainment, we sell a good time, we don’t sell boats. We sell a pleasant way of living.”

The boat also features vases of white roses and luxurious white seating areas.

Victoria and David have been joined on the trip by two of their three sons Romeo, 19, and Cruz, 16, as well as their 10 year old daughter Harper

Harper and mum Victoria were seen lounging together, sharing a peek at the lavish interiors on the yacht.

Harper was pictured in a stylish black and lilac graphic T-shirt and light blue denim pair of jeans – an outfit that could just as easily be seen on an off duty Victoria.

The schoolgirl and her family are relaxing in Miami ahead of big brother Brooklyn 's Florida wedding to heiress Nicola Peltz.

Victoria looked stunning as she posed on the beach during the trip

"David had a look around some yachts in the summer, and decided to treat himself," a source told The Sun .

"He helped design the boat himself, and has been incredibly hands-on with everything. It's not an oligarch-stylee superyacht, but it's still pretty plush by anyone's standards.

"He was inspired after holidaying with Elton and David on their boat – and loves life on the water."

The 100ft yacht, which David treated the family to for Christmas, is thought to have been funded by David's £150m deal with this year's World Cup in Qatar.

The yachts owned by celebrities

How can someone who is recognised everywhere get away from it all? On a superyacht, of course. Yachts owned by celebrities range in style and size, but one thing that unite these vessels is their owner's love for the sea. Our round-up features the famous faces of British footballer David Beckham, tennis superstar Rafael Nadal, martial artist Conor McGregor and fashion designer Giorgio Armani.

Unknown owned by Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimović took delivery of the second hull in Benetti 's 34M Oasis, named Unknown , in 2022.  The 34 metre superyacht has had a busy maiden season, cruising around the emerald coasts of Sardinia showing off her trademarked Oasis deck and RWD -designed exterior. Ibrahimović has posted the yacht on social media extensively, with videos of him and his friends playing with a drone and putting her huge locker of water toys - which includes a floating dock - to good use. The Oasis 34M follows in the footsteps of the highly popular Oasis 40M, the first hull of which, Rebeca , is owned by champion powerboat racer Tim Ciasulli.

The modern classic commuter yacht Vendetta is just one of the many yachts that Billy Joel has owned. The "Piano Man" is a yacht fanatic, to the extent that he's even a celebrity yacht designer . Designed by Doug Zurn, the 17 metre Vendetta was created to be a true replica of the classic gentleman's commuter launches that were popularised in the 1920s for their quick speed to run down the Long Island Sound and into New York City. True to the intended form of the vessels, Billy Joel told BOAT International  that he has used the yacht to run from his home in Long Island to the City to perform in a concert. At one point, Billy Joel owned five yachts, including 29 metre Inace explorer yacht Audacious (re-named Miss Sarah J ) ,  which he converted to house a few of his motorcycles. Built by Italian shipyard Cerri Cantieri Navali , the 27-metre Freedom was designed by Tommaso Spadolini in collaboration with her owner. According to Cavalli, the inspiration for the yacht’s design was the aesthetic of batman’s superhero batmobile. This explains the severe lines, jet black exterior and tinted windows which make up the yacht’s distinctive appearance. on board, Cavalli’s signature animal-print furnishings adorn the cabins and saloons. DAVID and Victoria Beckham have been pictured onboard their stunning £5million superyacht as they prepare for their eldest son Brooklyn's wedding to Nicola Peltz next week.

Posh and Becks have jetted off on a luxurious holiday in the week leading up to Brooklyn's £3m wedding - and their stunning yacht has certainly caught the eye of many.

David Beckham has certainly gone overboard with his yacht costing nearly £5million

The former Spice Girl and her husband David were joined on their £5million yacht by two of their three sons Romeo and Cruz , as well as their ten-year-old daughter Harper .

The yacht has been aptly named Seven, after the former England player's shirt number - and it's also the middle name of their daughter.

The yacht is believed to be 93.5ft and the couple picked it up outside of their £19million Miami penthouse.

An onlooker told us in December: "David looked ecstatic as he took to sea on board his gleaming boat.

Alleged Adult Entertainment Planned on Mega Yacht During Super Bowl: Commissioner

Commissioner joe carollo expressed outrage that the seafair yacht was reportedly leased to a company out of the atlanta area advertising as the “no. 1 strip club and lounge.”, published january 25, 2020 • updated on january 26, 2020 at 11:39 am.

A member of the Miami city commission is asking for an investigation into claims that a mega yacht docked near Bayfront Park during the week before Super Bowl LIV will allegedly feature adult entertainment.

During a Saturday afternoon press conference, Commissioner Joe Carollo expressed outrage that the SeaFair Yacht was reportedly leased to a company out of the Atlanta area that advertises on social media as the “No. 1 strip club and lounge.”

Carollo says he received information about the alleged rental on Friday, one day before the Super Bowl Live fan event opened.

"We can't say what is going to be on there for those six days, we can only go from what we've seen in social media,” Carollo said before adding that he was told that over 100 women were being brought in to work on the boat in an area where adult entertainment is not permitted and violates city code.

The owner of the yacht, David Lester, sent a statement to NBC 6 saying that permission was never given for unlawful activity to take place on the ship.

“Our goal with the client was to offer an additional range of exciting outstanding activity during Super Bowl week in Miami,” Lester wrote. “It is unfortunate that some unauthorized advertising on social media created a false impression of activities planned aboard.”

WEATHER ALERT

2 heat advisories in effect for 10 regions in the area

Commissioner joe carollo outraged over alleged adult entertainment party planned for yacht in miami waters, 6-day party on massive vessel is planned for super bowl week.

Roy Ramos , Reporter

MIAMI – The SeaFair Mega Yacht is commonly seen in the waters around Downtown Miami.

The City of Miami was recently informed that a party would be held aboard the vessel that features some adult entertainers.

The owner of the yacht, David Lester, told Local 10 News that's not the case, but the city is still doing what it can to stop the event from happening.

City of Miami Commissioner Joe Carollo was outraged after learning the owner of the SeaFair Yacht, who leases a dock on a month-to-month bases near Bayfront Park, has allegedly subleased the vessel to Allure Atlanta.

That company is advertised on social media as the “No. 1 Strip Club & Lounge.”

"Under no circumstances had Bayfront Park approved anything like this," Carollo said. "We can't say what is going to be on there for those six days, we can only go from what we've seen."

Bayfront Park is currently home to Super Bowl Live, a family friendly event featuring live music, interactive games and more ahead of Super Bowl LIV, which takes place next Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium.

But when it comes to adult entertainment, Carollo said it is not permitted in that part of town and it violates city code.

"There should be no adult entertainment while the vessel is in the city limits," the commissioner said.

Carollo has informed the city and state attorney of the plans for the yacht, which Local 10 News learned will feature artists like 21 Savage, Fabulous, Migos, and Future, among others.

"We were also told that these people were going to be bringing in 100 girls from out of state," he said.

Carollo also sent a letter to Lester, saying he is responsible for the event.

"I understand the commissioner's concern based on the advertisement on social media," said Lester. "And the ad has since been pulled."

Lester told Local 10 News' Roy Ramos that there would be no adult entertainment going on aboard the vessel.

The Allure company plans to take the party proposal before city commissioners next week to see if it will be permitted to hold the six-day event.

29 Most Expensive Celebrity Yachts, Ranked by Value

David and Victoria Beckham Yacht

Celebrities consistently create demand in the private yacht market. If a celebrity’s net worth is in the high millions or more, they can certainly afford to indulge in luxury superyachts, which can cost well into seven figures or more and have six- to seven-figure annual operating costs.

The main reason that celebrities like yachting is that they can enjoy intimate, low-key trips with friends and family, out of reach of paparazzi cameras. Tiger Woods enjoys personal time aboard his yacht so much that he named the ship Privacy and even sleeps on board when he travels to golf tournaments.

Even if celebrities don’t own a yacht, they may charter them, as Rihanna and Beyonce do, for quiet time away from the spotlight. After traveling on a friend’s yacht, or chartering one, a celebrity may decide to take the plunge and buy one themselves. That’s what happened to Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling after she chartered actor Johnny Depp’s yacht. The Beckhams decided to get their own vessel after spending summers on the Mediterranean with their good friend Sir Elton John on his yacht Wabi Sabi. Some celebrities, such as Apple founder Steve Jobs, singer Billy Joel or fashion designer Roberto Cavalli, were involved in every step of creating their own customized yacht.

So, which celebrity yachts are the most expensive and extravagant? We made a list of the top ones — some of which have been sold in recent years, possibly due to their high operating costs, but will always be identified with their iconic celebrity owners. We then ranked the yachts by their current value, adjusted for inflation.

Absolutely the worst food I have had. We were on board for a company event and the buffet was gross. The beef short ribs were chewy ( over cooked) the chicken was over seasoned that I couldn't eat it. The bar tenders were nice but had to look up drinks( manhattan's) which seemed weird for a standard drink. The wine selection was not ideal. They served second / third label wines that were probably $8-10 a bottle. Not even worth the effort. I would not recommend this venue.

SeaFair

Holy smokes this is a cool venue! I'm glad I found this mega-yacht party palace at an event during Art Basel. I liked it so much I just got my firm to book it for a company event. Very seldom have I been so blown away by the setting and service, anywhere, anytime. If you're wondering where/what/how, Seafair is the huge white yacht docked on Biscayne Bay by the Intercontinental Hotel. That's the hotel with the 30-story tall hip hop girl gyrating in LED lights. I felt like her after visiting Seafair, but didn't dance right there on the street. It's hard to decide where to start. This enormous modern boat will make you feel like the benevolent dictator of a small oil sheikdom. It's available for events just there at the dock, or it will take you out into the Intracoastal or even the Atlantic. Food and service were top-notch. There were some cranky old complainers (me included) at the Art Basel event, and even the harsh ones were impressed. You can use their in-house folks/food or bring your own. In short, it's an only-in-Miami venue. Plus, I just like showing out-of-town clients the giant hiphop light sculpture 5 blocks from my office to borrow some Miami hipness.

this boat is a mess and outdated also very expensive, this company of Enzo Ships LLC does not have the right staff for this venue, at best they hire low paying wages migrants for the maintenance of this vessel. Their bathrooms look nice but the plumbing is terrible, the third floor flooring is coming apart from water leaks from the plumbing, they give a false promise that the ship will sail in the bay, and have mechanical problems. Don't use this boat for any events, their prices are extremely extremely high. Go elsewhere

Had the pleasure of attending the 2015 Halloween party aboard SeaFair Miami. We went with a group of friends and we all had a lovely time! The yacht is beautiful and extremely well kept. Then again is only a 41 million dollar mega yacht. This mega yacht had was extremely spacious at 228 feet and 4 cool decks. The Skydeck by far was one of our favorites! Upon entering the crew kindly greeted you and it truly made you feel welcome. The bathrooms were clean and spacious and the many areas and spaces never made you feel claustrophobic. The yacht took off on around the Miami Bay area and it had a priceless view and feel. It truly made me feel like a million bucks... The on con was that the drinks onboard were a little overpriced at $20.00 each then again it wasn't a surprise considering how lovely this party was. Overall, we would definitely recommend this yacht for a private event and can only imagine how amazing it would be to be onboard for their New Years party. I would definitely recommend going with group or taking a romantic date for a private event. Enjoy!

Photo of Chris C.

The Yacht is good looking and it is reserved or rented out for different events. My first experience here was an Art Gallery event that they hosted, which was a pretty classy event. But this time they hosted a Cadillac and Architectural design event, which was WAAAAAAY Better. The Hosts and Hostesses were super polite, friendly and accommodating. The food and drinks-amazing. The parking-convenient and not priced outrageously. The decor of the inside of the Yacht-elegant. The Event-1st class. **Note: If you are dating someone with class and a good sense of style then take them to an event that's hosted by this place. So, check it....the food that they catered for this event was delicious assorted sandwiches, pasta, cheeses and fresh salad, which was so full of flavor and refreshing. They also served honey mint iced green tea, which I enjoyed every sip of it and soft baked macadamia cookies, which was one of the best I've had in a while. Count me in on any future events-Holla!!!!

We paid a lot of money to go out on the "VIP" New Years party. The boat never left the dock and we overheard two employees saying that it never intended on leaving. We emailed the captain and he flat out lied that it was too windy when it wasn't windy at all - total rip off

I got married on the sea fair last year around this time and it was the best experience of my life. The boat is completely remodeled with state of the art amenities. You can't compare it to any other wedding yacht in South Florida! Not only is the vessel incredible but the staff is top notch. Michael handles all of the events on the boat and he is so organized and such a pleasure to work with. Also big kudos to the captain who welcomed everyone and made sure to take a picture with us. All in all it was a day I truly can never forget and the experience was beyond expectations because of this incredible ship. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts Mr.&Mrs.Robinson

Such a beautiful yacht. Greg White, Mariana Hauri, Captain Craig Matthews & Captain Sam Carroll all did an amazing job. Since one of the owners is an art collector, so there is beautiful art throughout. It is clearly a luxury yacht including the ballroom on the third level surrounded by windows where people can enjoy the sunset while enjoying their dinner.

The New Year's Eve celebration on the SeaFair sounded fabulous online and we signed up to go with another couple, selecting the VIP option for a fee of $400 per person (supposedly discounted and going up to $500 after Dec. 1). We arrived for early "VIP" boarding and quickly realized that nearly all the participants had opted for the VIP event and boarding was basically a "cattle call". Once on board we were directed to the third deck where a buffet was set up in two rooms, each with very limited seating, mostly sofa-like seats with low tables. There was a bar set up in each room as well, serving drinks in flimsy plastic cups. The buffet was what you would expect at a party in a second-tier restaurant...mediocre food and flimsy plastic dishes and flatware to put it on. Before long there were lines at the bars and buffet and people were searching for a place to sit to eat. We ended up going down to level 2 where there was more seating (since no one seemed to have opted for the regular party), but no music or entertainment was provided. At 9:00 we were herded to the top deck for the "show"...a DJ with several dancers on stilts wearing feathers and offering an opportunity to dance on a soaking wet, slippery dance floor, alongside families with young children. The "cruise" took us off-shore (barely) until just before midnight, when we returned to watch the orange make its final climb to the top of the Inter-Continental Hotel. Judging from the majority of faces, the disappointment in the event was shared by all, except for the children who seemed to enjoy themselves. This event was a big disappointment for my group, though we tried to make the most of it...sorry SeaFair but this party was pathetic. I gave two stars because the yacht is beautiful.

Gunnar O’Farrell, left, will make his unlimited hydroplane racing debut at Seafair this weekend in the U-60 The Beast Unleashed Miss Thriftway under the watchful eye of his grandfather Greg O’Farrell. (Dean Rutz / The Seattle Times)

Go Fast Turn Left Racing returns to Seafair with three generations ready to race

Nathan Joyce

Greg O’Farrell lives on Lake Washington, and it’s a regular occurrence to see him hop on his Jet Ski and head out to the middle of the lake and just gently ride the waves.

“I turn the thing off and thank God I’ve been so fortunate,” he said.

It’s on Lake Washington this weekend that his unlimited hydroplane racing team, Go Fast Turn Left Racing, will be circling the racecourse at Seafair. That wasn’t the case last year as the O’Farrells, regulars at Seafair for nearly 20 years, sat it out.

The reason why goes back to why O’Farrell contemplates his life as he bobs up and down on the lake.

At this point last year, O’Farrell, 75, was recovering from a kidney transplant, adjusting to the organ donated by his daughter, Jennifer. It was the latest in a long line of health problems, but as Go Fast Turn Left returns to racing for the first time since before the pandemic, he feels like a new man.

“If my son … would let me, I’d go run a paving crew,” he said. “That’s how good I feel.”

  • The Gold Cup hydro race is in Seattle for the first time since 1985. Here’s why that’s a big deal.
  • What you need to know for this weekend’s hydro races at Seafair

O’Farrell ran paving crews for decades with his business, Auburn-based Lakeridge Paving, which is the family business — along with racing.

Friday, when qualifying began just off the Stan Sayres pits, three generations were at work. Greg and his son Brian are the owners, and Brian is the crew chief as well. His son Gunnar will be making his debut as an unlimited-hydroplane driver.

This weekend is something of a reset for Go Fast Turn Left Racing. The O’Farrells debuted a new boat late in the 2019 season. It saw two races. Then there was no Seafair in 2020 and 2021. And we already talked about last year.

So a new boat with a new driver and an owner with a new lease on life has opened a new era for the team racing for motorsports’ oldest trophy in the Gold Cup.

History lesson

The U-60 will run as The Beast Unleashed Miss Thriftway this weekend. It’s a nostalgic return to racing for Greg.

The Miss Thriftway holds a special place in his heart. It’s a big reason his family races boats.

As Greg tells it, in the late 1950s when he was a kid, his father knew Willard Rhodes, who owned the Miss Thriftway team. They were invited to the home of Ted Jones, the man who designed the Slo-Mo-Shun IV that won the Gold Cup and brought hydroplane racing to Seattle. At the gathering was Bill Muncey, the man many consider the greatest hydroplane driver of all time. Muncey took Greg for a ride in the Miss Thriftway Too, which started a lifelong love affair with the sport.

Brian remembers Seafair being a part of every summer, whether it was watching from the beach or the log boom. He was one of those kids towing a wooden hydroplane behind his bike.

“It was a big deal in our neighborhood,” said Brian, 55, who grew up in Lakeridge.

It wasn’t until 2005 that the O’Farrells’ participation expanded beyond spectating. The legendary and late hydroplane owner Fred Leland needed a driveway paved and, in the process, Greg ended up sponsoring a hydroplane team.

It took only two years to go from sponsors to owners as the O’Farrells bought a boat from Leland. Lakeridge Paving has been one of many sponsors for the team over the years. The Navy was an early sponsor as was PayneWest Insurance, which came from Darrell Strong, who also went from sponsor to owner with the two-boat Strong Racing team. Albert Lee was also a longtime sponsor.

Miss Thriftway is a hallowed name in unlimited hydroplane circles. It was driven by Muncey, the beloved showman who was the sport’s winningest driver when he died in a race in 1981. It was a standout in the golden age of hydro racing in Seattle.

After the Sho-Mo-Shun boats won a record five consecutive Gold Cups, “the team that picks up the mantle, if you will, is the Miss Thriftway,” said David Williams, the executive director of the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum in Kent. Williams was one of the first drivers for the O’Farrells.

Veteran driver Brian Perkins drove the bulk of the races for the team. He’s since retired and joined the team as a coach for Gunnar.

Go Fast Turn Left Racing is still searching for its first victory in a winner-take-all final. The team does have 10 heat wins and nine podium finishes to brag about. It finished second at the Gold Cup in Detroit in 2014.

The team decided to build a new boat in 2012, working with former Miss Budweiser crewman Dale Van Wierengen. The project advanced in starts and stops until 2019 when it debuted at the Columbia Cup in the Tri-Cities.

The boat debuted as the PayneWest and it had an interesting start. In a testing session, the escape hatch on the bottom of the boat opened and was torn off by the force of the water.

Parts from other teams wouldn’t fit quite right. Divers came up empty-handed when they searched for it. Obviously, a boat can’t race with a hole in its hull, and the weekend was shaping up to be a disappointment.

But hydroplane racing is a family unto itself.

Veteran boat racer Mark Evans had an old boat from the Ellstrom team, which ran last as the 96 Spirit of Qatar, sitting in his shop on Lake Chelan. His brother Mitch Evans was at the race and got in touch with his brother, who had an employee drive it to the race.

Perkins did the fiberglass work to get the hatch on the boat — 15 minutes before Heat 1A.

It ran the next week at Seafair as the U.99.9 CARSTAR powered Miss Rock KISW. And other than the annual preseason testing sessions in the Tri-Cities, the boat has been sitting in its Maple Valley shop.

“It’s only got two weekends of racing on it,” Brian said.

Scott Raney, co-owner of the U-11 Unlimited Racing Group, which has run Legend Yacht Transport this season, saw the boat in action at the testing sessions.

“It’s no slouch either,” he said. “They should be right there competing for wins.”

‘Feel like a million bucks’

The kidney failure was the last in a long line of health problems for Greg.

He’s had major heart surgery. A bout with thyroid cancer. A ruptured Achilles. He’s had both shoulders rebuilt, the result of a career owning a paving company.

“I spent my career on a shovel,” he said. “Hard labor.”

Years of abusing ibuprofen caused kidney failure, he said.

But he’s proud to note he’s been clean and sober for 40 years. He said it came after his wife, Darlene, threatened to leave. It worked, and they’ve been married for 56 years. They have two kids and four grandchildren.

With a company with so many employees, Greg occasionally encounters employees with addiction problems. He’ll work to get them in treatment and even go to AA meetings with them.

“I take a lot of pride in that,” he said.

Family businesses

Lakeridge Paving traces its origin story back to 1968. After a stint in the Coast Guard and after losing his riveting job at Boeing because of a bad economy, Greg borrowed $500 from his mom to buy a dump truck and started patching potholes in parking lots.

Lakeridge Paving now does $30 million in business each year and has more than 100 employees, Greg said.

Several of those employees have the name O’Farrell. Brian is the operations manager. Gunnar drives a truck and his sister Makenna is in dispatch and operations.

It’s similar setup for the racing team.

The Miss Rock KISW is engulfed in flames in the south turn of the Seafair unlimited hydroplane race course, Friday, August 3, 1990. The driver, Jack Barrie, wearing red helmet, is in the foreground being aided by a rescue diver, to the left of Barrie. The hydroplane ignited as it attempted to qualify for tomorrow’s race. The driver said he was unaware of the fire at first, which occurred after his engine died. Barrie was not injured. The crew plans to attempt to qualify tomorrow if the boat can be repaired in time. If he was hurt, Jack Barrie did not show it after a fire to Miss Rock put a momentary halt to his chances of qualifying for the Seafair unlimited hydroplane regatta, Friday, August 3, 1990.

Greg is the co-owner along with Brian, who is also the crew chief. Gunnar is the driver and his sister Makenna is the team manager.

“That’s the best part, being around family,” Brian said.

Gunnar’s girlfriend, Marina Bartels, is also part of the crew. They met when she was on the crew in 2019. They both race 2.5-liter modified hydroplanes, and there will be races where they compete against each other. So far, boat problems have kept them from going head-to-head.

“I really don’t know what to expect,” Bartels said about the potential competition.

Easing back into things

Don’t expect the Go Fast Turn Left team to try to make headlines this weekend.

Ask the senior members of the team about the race, and you’ll mostly hear, “We’re just looking to have fun.”

Saturday’s first heat was to be the first time Gunnar had been on a racecourse in an unlimited hydroplane with other boats on the water. He’s done the 12 laps over 130 mph that’s required for a new driver to qualify. The next step is to be the “trailer” boat (meaning in the outside lane and a few boat lengths behind) for two heats.

“I don’t want him to have his foot in it all the time,” Greg said. “I want him to learn and take it easy. We’re here to have fun.”

But is that Gunnar’s plan?

“No promises,” he said with a smile.

Gunnar’s boat-racing career started as so many do, building J-stock outboard hydroplanes at the museum with his grandfather and his sister.

“There really wasn’t any other options (for him other than boat racing),” Gunnar, 25, said.

He’s spent the past few years driving in smaller classes to get more and more seat time.

Then it was time to drive the big boat.

“I was really nervous, I’ll tell you that,” he said. “I planned to go slow and get used to it. I think as soon as I got into it, I was doing 120 (mph).”

The unlimited hydroplane season ends this year with Seafair. The plan is for the team to do the West Coast races next year, and possibly build from there.

Greg said his wife always asks him if he’s going to retire. He doesn’t think he will.

“It’s a life sentence,” he said.

Justice Department Charges California Apartment Owner and Staff with Discrimination Against Families with Children

The Justice Department today filed a lawsuit against the owner and operators of a Fremont, Calif., apartment complex, alleging that they had discriminated against families with children in violation of the Fair Housing Act by prohibiting children from playing in the common grassy areas of the complex.

“Families with children should have the same ability to enjoy their homes as all other tenants,” said Jocelyn Samuels, Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges that the owners and rental staff of Woodland Garden Apartments, a 37 unit apartment complex, adopted and enforced a policy prohibiting children from playing outside in the common grassy areas of the complex.  The complex is owned by Fred Martin and managed by Fatima Rivera, both of whom are named in the suit.  Alfredo Rivera, a former maintenance worker who participated in enforcing the policy, is also named as a defendant in the suit.

This lawsuit arose as a result of complaints filed with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) by five families with children who lived at Woodland Garden Apartments, and Project Sentinel, a non-profit organization based in Santa Clara, Calif., that promotes fair housing.  After HUD investigated the complaints, it issued a charge of discrimination and the matter was referred to the Justice Department.

“Housing providers cannot impose more restrictive policies on families with children or evict them simply because their children leave the unit,” said Bryan Greene, HUD Acting Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity.  “HUD and DOJ are committed to enforcing the fair housing rights of all people, including families with children.”

The lawsuit seeks a court order prohibiting future discrimination by the defendant, monetary damages for those harmed by the defendant’s actions and a civil penalty.

The federal Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, familial status, national origin and disability.  Individuals who believe they may have been victims of housing discrimination may contact the Justice Department at 1-800-896-7743, e-mail the Justice Department at [email protected] ., or contact HUD at 1-800-669-9777 or through www.hud.gov/fairhousing .

The complaint is an allegation of unlawful conduct.  The allegations must still be proven in federal court.
