Shower on Deck

There is a handheld shower on the back of the yacht near the swim deck. This is great for rinsing off after an afternoon swim. Don’t worry, there are showers in the bathrooms too.

If you anchor off a secluded beach, you can use the dinghy to get ashore. Occasionally, you’ll also use the dinghy in port if the marina is crowded.

All of our yachts include free unlimited wifi via a modem that connects to the 4G cell network.

Each of the three available cabins on the Lagoon 450 come with private ensuite bathrooms with full showers. The cabins also include reading lights, storage for shoes and gear, and a closet for hanging clothes.

Lagoon 450S Catamaran Review: Design, Construction, & Performance

Lagoon 450s exterior, design, construction & sailing ability (part 1).

In the last three months, we have completed 3 blue water sailing trips, totaling 2400+ NM, on our Lagoon 450S catamaran. We are ready to share our thoughts about its performance, as well as our likes and dislikes about the catamaran overall. When we first saw the drawings of the Lagoon 450S, we really liked the design. It had many of the features we wanted in a cruising catamaran, the most important feature being the semi-raised helm station. This was always a non-negotiable point for us and the SporTop fit the bill perfectly. The other catamaran choice offering a semi-raised helm would have been the Fountaine Pajot Helia 44 (review and pictures). The FP Helia is a nice boat, but we didn’t like the interior as much (purely personal preference) and it is substantially smaller than the Lagoon in volume (click on the picture below to see the comparison).

Good cruising performance was another important feature but since living space is equally important to us, we opted to go for a cruiser rather than a racer cruiser like Outremer or Catana. We live and work aboard and we occasionally do educational charters . Therefore, we wanted good interior space, but we certainly did not want a slug either.

Based on previous sailing reports and the Lagoon design team’s projections, the Lagoon 450S seemed the right choice for us (Read our post about “ Why we chose the Lagoon 450S” ).

We originally weren’t too thrilled about owning one of around 500+ similar catamarans built in the last four or so years. On top of that, production boats like Lagoon and Fountaine Pajot are often times unfairly tagged as “condomarans” that cannot sail worth a damn. These perceptions were not a good start for our new “home” right off the bat and not great for our exit strategy either. So, we researched this extensively. We found that unlike some other brands, statistics proved that Lagoon’s resale is very strong, particularly the 3-cabin version . But the 4-cabin Lagoons don’t do badly either. So we made peace with that issue, knowing that Lagoon holds its value fairly well. Moreover, we figured that with so many units built, all or most kinks should be worked out on this model by now. We really liked that idea!

Lagoon catamaran factory tour La Rochelle

At the Lagoon factory, a quality controller oversees every stage of the production during the entire build process and every imperfection is dealt with immediately (see the video below in “construction” section). That was very impressive and set our minds at ease. We highly recommend doing a factory tour in La Rochelle. Not only is it very exciting to see your boat being manufactured, but the city of La Rochelle is a gourgeous old walled coastal city situated in the southwest part of France (AND the French food and wine is exquisite)! How Did The Lagoon 450S Catamaran Measure Up?

So, on the surface we liked the Lagoon 450S. BUT, did it pass the test for our purposes as live-aboards with a penchant for sailing long ocean passages?

Lagoon 450S Sailing Ability

As I said before, over 500 Lagoon 450 Flybridge versions were produced. So this model has already proven itself to be a good ocean cruiser in various ocean crossings and rallies like the ARC Rally . Bearing in mind that the 450S is not a performance catamaran, we were pleasantly surprised with her performance under all conditions. Period. Doing a 200+ NM sailing day is very important to us. We often sail long distances and we wanted to be able to make good progress every day and to out-run bad weather if possible. It was a goal that we easily achieved on our delivery from Guadeloupe and subsequently on other passages.

Lowered Boom: We really liked that the boom on the SporTop is substantially lower than the Flybridge version (28 inches), with a mast height of 74 ft. The lower boom brings the center of gravity down lower and reduces inertia in the rig. That, coupled with the increased bouyancy forward created by the chines on the inside of the bowsand the sail plan, increases performance and eliminates hobby horsing, making it a faster and much more stable and comfortable ride, despite the maximum volume and very high freeboard.

Nimble In Light Conditions: During our delivery from Guadeloupe the boat sailed very well on all points of sail and did well even in very light winds which was a pleasant surprise. She easily sails at 50% of apparent wind speed. Generally, most boats will sail well in strong winds, but it is the light wind performance that defines whether the boat is a good sailor or not and the 450S is very nimble in light conditions in part because of the enormous 872sqft of square-headed fully battened mainsail.

Good Performance: She also displayed good upwind ability on a close reach and tracked really well. On a reach and beam reach, the favorite point of sail for a cat, our Lagoon sails like a dream. We often sailed in double digits without too much trouble. As an example; we sailed 41NM in 4 hours in 18-20 knots between Turks and Caicos and Georgetown in the Exumas on a beam reach in 6-8ft seas with little or no slamming. That is an easy 10.25Knots per hour – not a rocket ship to be sure, but certainly very respectable.

Squally Conditions: During our trip in the Gulf-stream going north, we were caught in several squalls. Conditions were deplorable with 10-12ft waves and had wind speeds of up to 38 knots. We were able to luff up the main and reef down in no time, which was easily done from the safety of the cockpit. Luffing up is the best course of action when you’re temporarily overpowered. It reduces the speed and helps keep the boat under control. Once we had the reefs in, we bore away and ran with the wind. The boat was moving at around 12 knots with 38 knots of true wind from astern. By running or doing a very broad reach we managed to reduce the apparent wind speed on the rig to around a manageable 26 Knots until the squall blew through and we could resume our course. Genoa / Self-tacking jib: We have a full Genoa instead of a self-tacking jib. While the self-tacking jib is a nice feature for short-handed sailing, the sail is small for anything but a close or beam reach. Another reason why we opted for the conventional genoa setup, is that if a jib sheet parts, it is easy to use the lazy sheet to control the jib while replacing the damaged sheet. If the sheet parts on a self-tacking jib, which has only one sheet, there are all sorts of problems and you have no choice but to furl the sail if you can.

Sailing upwind: It is commonly believed that a catamaran cannot point as high as a monohull unless it has daggerboards. That is not exactly accurate. Generally most catamarans point as high as cruising monohulls but make more leeway because they have less lateral resistance although, catamarans with daggerboards do point higher than ones with fixed keels. However, if you fall off the wind 5 – 10 degrees, its boat speed will be higher than an equivalent monohull and maintain a faster VMG upwind. In fact, Dennis Connor’s 1988 America’s Cup victory on ‘Stars and Stripes’ in San Diego over KZ-1, the world’s most radical 90ft. monohulls, bears this out.

Sail changes: Stephen and I did several sail changes on delivery, including hoisting the spinnaker. It was easy enough to do. All the lines come back to the cockpit and quite frankly, even as big as this rig is, it was not very difficult to handle the sail changes single handedly. The single line reefing makes it really easy to reef quickly. We learned how easy it was to reef at two o’clock in the morning when a massive squall hit us out of nowhere while sailing north in the Gulf-stream from The Abacos in the Bahamas to Norfolk.

We have a pad eye on each bow and attach the tack of the sail to the windward bow using a snatch block and a line back to the forward cleat (the reason for this is that if you get into a situation it is easy to release the cleat line and let the tack fly free, you can then recover the sail using the sheet by pulling it down behind the main).

The head is hoisted using the spinnaker halyard and the clew is attached to a sheet that runs outside of everything to a block on the leeward side stern and then to a winch for trim control. To get the best performance out of the Asymmetrical, you should ease the sheet until the luff of the sail starts to collapse and then sheet in a bit. Ideally you should see a periodic flapping/collapsing of the leading edge of the sail but only about a foot or so. Be mindful not to sail with the Asymmetrical sheeted in too tight; it will not perform to its optimum.

To conclude, we have few complaints about the sailing ability of the Lagoon 450S!

Sailing Ability

The mainsail is a little sluggish in coming down. Intermediate cars would have made all the difference. The distance between the cars on the sail is around 10-12 feet. When the sail drops, having this much distance between the cars, makes the sail billow out and prevents the sail from coming down fast. It’s an easy fix though.

Construction

This boat is well constructed. Even as we pushed the boat with as much power as the conditions allowed, we did not notice excessive creaking or shuddering. We had some VERY picky crew members on board. They inspected every corner of the boat but could not find much fault. Every inch of the boat is well finished, even in the darkest corners. When we did the factory tour, we noticed that every stage of the build was inspected for quality along the way, and you can tell from looking at the finished product.

Vacuum Infusion: What impressed Stephen (the more technical member of our team) is that the hulls are vacuum infused, ensuring the optimum laminate/resin ratio which reduces weight significantly. As we know, weight is a killer for catamarans and less weight allows for more volume; Good or bad, I don’t know. But what I do know, is that in spite of the much talked about heavy “condomarans”, this boat sailed very well and is comfortable in all conditions.

Solid construction: The other things that made an impression on Stephen is that the rudder tube is composite and laminated into a solid section of the hull towards the stern instead of on the join (which would have been the easy thing to do). The chain plates are well bedded onto a section of very heavy duty solid laminate which transfers the load into the hull section. All equipment fitted on the deck, such as the cleats, have substantial backing plates for strength (see the picture insert). That is however not the case with all catamaran brands. We have heard of cleats being ripped out of the deck on some cats in strong winds.

Bridgedeck Clearance

The bridgedeck clearance is around 26 inches, which represents 5% of LWL, which is a very respectable ratio. ( Read here about bridgedeck clearance on catamarans ). One of the biggest surprises for us was how quiet the boat was during passages. There was very little slamming even in big steep seas. Now, we all know that catamarans slam under the bridgedeck from time to time. There is no getting away from it but it’s the degree of slamming that makes the difference.

We have been in catamarans where the saloon table literally bounced up and down and the whole boat vibrated from the slamming on the bridgedeck. The Lagoon 450S’s bridgedeck clearance is very good and the transons are well out of the water even fully loaded. The gull-wing shaped tunnel breaks the waves somewhat, which reduces wave impact and therefor slamming. It really is a feature that we were very pleased about since it is crucial for catamaran seaworthiness and crew comfort.

The Semi-Raised Helm Station

Safety: The person on watch in the cockpit can still be social with other crew down in he cockpit or even in the galley. When it’s just the two of us on long passages, ease of social interaction and safety concerns makes a big difference for peace of mind. We are always within easy reach of each other.

Instrument panel: The instrument panel is awesome! There is a lot of space for instruments on the instrument panel. The engine panels are well positioned on the panel, so you don’t have to bend down to see the engine RPMs. One has good visibility of the sails and all four corners of the catamaran and the engine controls are in a good position even for a shorter person.

The one negative is that I (Estelle) am a little short to stand and see over the coachroof properly, but I have found a vantage point that works for me.

The anchor locker is deep and wide, which stops chain from piling up and jamming the windlass. It comes with 170ft of oversized 1/2inch chain (a little overkill but it is great for sleeping soundly at night). The boat easily carries the weight. it’s stowed right in the chest under the mast and we have plenty of buoyancy up forward. We did replace the anchor with a 74-pound Rocna anchor . We keep the other one as our secondary anchor. It would have been nice to have a second bow roller to leave the second anchor in place but because of the way the anchor is situated in the chest, it is not possible.

Electrical & Plumbing

The electrical panel is adequate and user-friendly. The system is well protected with breakers at every critical juncture. It has easy access to all wire and technical spaces. Access to the circuit breakers (general and engine) is easy and protected in a housing with a hinged cover at the foot of the berth in the aft cabin. The plumbing is easily accessible everywhere and everything is high quality.

Two of the breakers are in very awkward spaces and were hard to find at first.

Engine Power & Generator

We chose to upgrade to the 57 HP Yanmar engines with Flexofold props and we’re glad we did. They give us lots of power when we need it. The engine rooms are accessed from the scoops and have a lot of space. There is plenty of space inside the compartment to be able to work on an engine with ease if necessary. There is also a convenient storage shelf over the engine compartment. We use three big storage bins so it’s easy to unpack if necessary. The Cummins 13KW generator in the chest of the boat has great access and is remarkably quiet.

We replaced the manufacturer’s fuel filter units fitted by the factory with two Racor 500’s. The manufacturer’s units were just too complicated. Stephen likes to be able to change the Racor filter cartridges quickly in the event of a blocked filter and the Racor filters, which he knows well, do the job best. Under engine we do a comfortable 7.5 knots at 2,500 rpm & 8.9 at 3,200; both cruising speed and top speed are satisfactory.

Scoops / Aft Boarding Steps

The steps in the “scoops” are a little steep and the bottom step is not deep enough. This is a big negative for fishermen!! On our Island Spirit the scoops were huge, wide and shallow. It’s a great place to land the fish and then immediately cut up and clean it. Because of the size of the scoops, it is safe and has plenty of space to work even in big sea. Not so on the Lagoon 450S. We will probably rig a fishing table on the stern. Even so, the steps are easy to board from a dinghy and providea nice swim platform. On the positive side the high steps and angle are great to reduce noise when underway which, believe it or not is quite loud. The other advantage of the scoops on the L450 is that when you have big seas from astern the boat remains dry and it is very unlikely that you will be pooped.

Dinghy Davits

They are sturdy and easy to operate. They are rated at 450-pounds per side and easily accommodate our Walkerbay 12ft deluxe super tender and Honda 20HP outboard engine. We had our dinghy and the engine hauled up and secured during passages and even with big seas the dinghy stayed steady and in place. The dinghy is fitted with a bridle and is easy to hoist. We have an electric winch right at the base of the davits and is easy to handle.

Boat Owner Manuals

The owner manuals are fantastic. It is very precise with pictures to show the various systems, plumbing, electrics, etc., both in English and in French. The English version is not a “direct” translation from French, so you don’t have to guess what they are trying to convey. Each individual piece of equipment on board has a user manual and separate warranties.

Overall, we are very satisfied with our choice of catamaran. We fitted a rub rail with stainless insert, a satellite TV, Iridium, and some other equipment after market. But we pretty much had a finished boat when we accepted delivery. In general, the quality of the important equipment from the factory is good and you can see that this is a fully evolved product. All warranty issues (we only had a couple of things) were dealt with promptly. If we were building the boat ourselves, it would be tough to do much better. This Lagoon 450S is a really good, comfortable live-aboard blue-water cruiser. Our biggest pleasant surprise is her sailing ability and comfort at sea.

Having been a monohull purist for a long time, I’ve only sailed Lagoon cats, and although I’ve loved the 38, 40 & 42s I’ve chartered, the 2014 39 we had going from St. Vincent to Grenada over 2 weeks this Spring was a dog. It was the slowest, most difficult and uncontrollable sailboat I’ve ever skippered. I learned from the captain we handed her over to at the end of the trip that they have a bad reputation, which had me concerned about other, newer Lagoons. So I was thrilled to read that you’re so happy with your 450S. Thanks for the great review and I’ll be looking for a 450S for our next charter.

Monohull owner here. I have spoken with a few lagoon 45 owners. I have been invited on board a couple different year ones. Their boats are all newer 2015 and up. Why are they all experiencing bulkhead de-lamination ? If l am not mistaken, 2010 was the first year for the lagoon 450. To date well over 1,000 hulls have been built. Lagoon is well aware of this problem. What year did the hull problems begin ? What year did lagoon correct the problem ? What have they done to remedy this default in manufacturing ? Not meaning to insult you. But your review reads like an advertisement for Lagoon. I thought your job is to be unbiassed. You did not find one fault. That tells me you are not a trustworthy person. Your job means more to you than your integrity. That makes you a boat salesperson, not a boat review person.

You’d have to imagine that the builders and designers of Lagoon Catamarans thought long and hard before making the commitment to replace their highly successful Lagoon 440—they sold more than 400 of the popular cats in a five-year production run—with a new, slightly larger model, the Lagoon 450. After all, the 440 had been well received both critically and in the marketplace, and it’s always challenging and risky to tinker with a proven entity. But through owner feedback and their own intuition and experience, they identified several items that they believed could be improved upon and/or refined. Some were rather major; others were quite subtle. Ultimately, they concluded that they could indeed create a bigger, safer 45-footer that was also more comfortable and luxurious.

And as we discovered last fall during the introduction and a test sail of the Lagoon 450 at the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, they have pretty much succeeded on each count.

There are several features from the 440 that the Lagoon design team of Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) considered irreplaceable, namely the boat’s fine performance under sail (which we’ll address momentarily) and the signature flybridge around which the entire deck layout was centered. The redesigned flybridge on the 450, then, retains its predecessor’s intent but is improved in its new iteration. On the 440, to gain access to the stairwell that led to the second tier, one had to first leave the cockpit and go out on deck. Now, via sets of stairs incorporated directly into the cockpit to port and starboard, you can easily stroll up to the bridge—with its steering station, engine controls, sheets and related running rigging, and a new, dedicated sunbathing lounge directly forward on the upper deck—in seconds flat. It’s not only a better use of space, but from a safety standpoint, it’s also a significant upgrade.

In one of the subtle improvements, the cockpit itself has been rearranged, with a new wraparound settee and dining table to port and an inviting “lazy-boy couch” to starboard, that significantly opens up the floor plan. There’s also an ingenious and nifty overhead opening hatch in the hard dodger that can provide ventilation and sunshine in good weather and protection from the elements under inclement conditions.

Forward of the distinctive Lagoon cabin house, sporting the rounded corners and big windows that characterize the entire brand, there’s a second cockpit/lounge area with a pair of huge seat lockers, one of which is perfectly sized for the optional 11-kilowatt Onan generator, a feature we’d guess most owners will choose, though a trio of 135-watt solar panels is yet another useful add-on to satisfy electricity demands.

That aforementioned aft cockpit, specifically the dining area to port, is situated directly abaft the large, U-shaped galley in the main saloon, which has its own dedicated sliding window behind the sink. In fact, when the sliding cockpit doors are opened as well, there’s virtually no separation between the interior saloon and the exterior living area—it’s one big, open space, and perfect for parties and open-air living. My one and only real complaint about the 450 is that the corners of the galley’s overhead lockers are very sharp and just above eye level for a 6-footer like me, and at one point, I almost gave myself a good knock stepping into the saloon from the cockpit.

The ultra-contemporary accommodations and furnishings have been fashioned by the Italian interior specialists Nauta Yachts. The overall design maximizes space and adds lots of intriguing little touches: indirect lighting, a hideaway cabinet for the flat-screen TV, clever catches for the drawers and lockers, and a washing machine with a crafty adjoining hamper, among others. The model I inspected, hull number two, was finished in light oak and walnut and was absolutely stunning. Facing forward, a dining area with an L-shaped settee and a pair of “floating” seats is to starboard, and the navigation station, with full electronics and an optional second steering station, is to port.

On the 450, to maximize interior volume, the hulls are slightly larger than the 440’s. Our test boat was laid out in the three-cabin/three-head owner’s version (a four-cabin/four-head model is also available) in which the main stateroom, which spans the entire starboard ama, is essentially a dedicated apartment that can be closed off from the rest of the yacht for privacy. It’s complete with a huge aft berth, a small office, a large en suite head with separate shower compartment (as have all the heads), and oodles of closet and storage space. A Lagoon representative said about 60 percent to 65 percent of new owners choose this arrangement, and it’s easy to understand why.

We tested the boat on Chesapeake Bay twice; we were skunked for breeze the first time, so we came back the next day when the wind had filled in at 10 to 12 knots. I’m glad we did. With its tall, 75-foot, double-spreader rig and square-topped mainsail, the 450 had abundant power and trucked to weather, when sailing closehauled under the genoa, at better than 6 knots. Once we cracked off and furled the genoa, replacing it with a code zero-type gennaker set on a dedicated sprit off the forward crossbeam, the boat knocked off 8-plus knots at an apparent-wind angle of 60 degrees.

The mainsheet and traveler are aft of the helmsman; the sheets and reefing lines are forward; everything is set up efficiently with electric winches and rope clutches. Though the choreography is a bit challenging the first time one tries to do everything alone—furl the genoa, unfurl the gennaker, trim the main—once you get the hang of it, the 450, which is by no means a small boat, is very easy to sail solo. And the view from the flybridge is expansive and terrific.

So yes, I’m sure it was tempting for everyone at Lagoon to look at the 440 and think, “Let’s leave well enough alone.” Future owners of the Lagoon 450, however, will be very glad that the company’s visionaries chose the opposite tack.

The Big Seller Only the 380, 400, 40 and 42 have sold more I believe. We were lucky enough to charter a flybridge version called “Ludmilla” in Mallorca for a week. This is a review of how we found the boat. We had two families (7) on board.

She comes in two versions, the 450F with a flybridge and the later 450S (Sport) with a more traditional Lagoon helm at the bulkhead. Many competitors have copied the flybridge idea (read our Bali 4.3 review for example), but it has been Lagoon who have developed this configuration most successfully over the years.

This catamaran continues to be a very popular charter boat (particularly the fly version) and it’s one of the most popular mid-sized catamarans on the second hand market. She’s not a performance boat (check out our Slyder 49 review if that is more what you are after) and doesn’t pretend to be: the 450 is all about space and comfort at a reasonable speed.

This is a large yacht with plenty of space for two families. With plenty of different zones on the boat like the forward cockpit, the fly helm, a big saloon and the aft cockpit area, it’s easy to find a bit of private space or to find somewhere to hang out. We’d recommend a read of Colin’s Lagoon 450F Owner´s Review . He bought a 2012 L450 called Parlay that had been damaged by Hurricane Irma and fixed her up, so he knows his way around these catamarans.

Anchoring is easy as the helmsman and whoever is on the windlass are close… so it’s easy to communicate.

She was surprisingly good upwind. We weren’t trying to win any style points, sticking the leeward engine on in lower winds got us to where we wanted to go quickly.
Off the wind was great fun especially with the gennaker up and she felt safe. We were reefing early to make sure everyone was enjoying themselves and still hit 8.5 knots at one point
Very comfortable. This boat had all the kit. A/C (great in marinas), water maker, genny. She’s heavy though.
All reefing lines came back to the helm.
Comfortable cabins, plenty of space to sleep outside under the stars on warmer nights.
There has been some pretty high profile issues with bulkheads raised by Parlay Revival . I am not going into the details here, but my impression is that Lagoon responded to this pretty well enabling owners to fix any defects.
That flybridge means that the boom is very high. If you have a problem (which we did with reefing lines) it’s not that easy to get to the sail without climbing up the mast steps.
I must have hit my head ten times on the flybridge bimini and ended up with a Loony Tunes style bump on my head.
The flybridge floor is another hazard if you are tall moving about in the cockpit below.
The winches are next to throttles and there is a big drop down the steps from the flybridge, .. you really have to watch your footing.
The ventilation in the saloon could be better, with only two forward facing hatches and no hatches in the coach roof. Things got hot and stuffy fast.
It’s stressful keeping an eye on everyone with the flybridge. Five minutes was all we could manage without wondering “where’s so and so?” etc.
The galley felt cramped considering the size of the saloon, although the sliding window which opens up to connect to the aft cockpit is handy.

Helm from High All the control lines lead back to the helm with some meaty Harken winches to help you manage the sails. The 450 comes in two flavours: the 450F which has an off-centre Flybridge helm (this is the boat that we chartered in the Med) and the 450S with a more traditional Lagoon bulkhead helming position.

The Flybridge helm is pretty exposed, but the view is great up here when the weather is good.

Great Visibility You can see all four corners of the boat from up here when you are docking and anchoring, and it´s easy to communicate with the person at the windlass. One thing I found though, was that the boom is pretty high on the 450F. If you have problems with the reefing lines for example (we did), then it´s not so easy to sort out without climbing up the mast steps which can be pretty scary in a seaway.

Another thing that annoyed me about the helm on the boat that we chartered is that I kept hitting my head on the bimini. Some boats have a sturdier looking hard top over the flybridge which is worth looking out for if you are looking for a second hand 450. But it is a fantastic place to hang out when you are on the hook or when the weather is calm -there´s no doubt about it. We spent a lot of time up here. I even slept up here on warmer nights, and there´s even a sunbathing area, directly forward of the helm on the upper deck.

Sport Option On balance, I would go for the bulkhead helm though (450S), but that´s a personal preference. If you have kids onboard, you lose sight of them up here if you are helming. It´s not so easy to keep an eye on everybody while you are underway.

Aft Cockpit

Stepping down from the helm brings you down into the aft cockpit which, while not as big as some Open concept boats, has plenty of space. The cockpit has a wraparound sofa and dining table to port, and a day bed to starboard. I found I had to watch my head when moving between the cockpit and saloon though.

The corners of the galley’s overhead lockers are very sharp and just at forehead height for me: you need to watch yourself around them.

We had a big drinks fridge out here on Ludmilla and a good system for storing rubbish.

Big Safe Galley There´s an ample U-Shaped galley facing aft on the port side which you can wedge yourself into if it´s getting rough. Forward of that, there’s a big nav station with a roomy L- shaped sofa and dining table to starboard. The saloon has a pair of big seat lockers, one of which can house an optional 11-kilowatt generator. This can also go in one of the forward lockers in the forward cockpit – probably a better spot for it to be honest.

The boat can carry up to 1000-litres of fuel and 800 litres of water.

Wide Roomy Hulls The Owner´s set up has the entire starboard hull dedicated to the skipper´s living area, with a big wide berth aft and a separate head and shower forward. There´s plenty of storage space down here, plus a writing desk and small sofa. There´s a sliding door on the Owner´s boats for privacy.

The other hull (or both hulls in the four cabin version) has two cabins – one aft and one in the bow. There are two heads with separate showers in the middle. We had no complaints about the sleeping arrangements, there is oodles of space down here thanks to those wide hulls.

The forepeaks can also be converted into cabins (4+2 configuration).

For such a big, comfortable boat, the 450 sails well. She’s no performance cat, but she holds her own. With a big, 75-foot, double-spreader rig and square-topped mainsail (that’s an option), there´s plenty of power to head upwind at 6 to 7 knots in a decent breeze. Come off the wind and you should see 8 knots and up to double figures, especially if you are flying a gennaker set off the bowsprit.

We were playing safe and reefing early on Ludmilla, and still hit 8.5 knots.

Well Organised Running Rigging The mainsheet and traveler are aft of the helm on the coachroof and all of the sheets and reefing lines are forward; everything is set up tidily with electric winches, clutches and big pockets for your lines. You can sail her solo theoretically (we’d recommend at least one decent crew member though: she’s well set up for 2). Just watch yourself around those steps and duck under that bimini if you have one.

The boat we chartered had added a downhaul to help get the sail down. With a well lubricated mast track, you shouldn´t need it, but it´s as well to have the option as the boom is high, especially on the 450F.

Under Power

The 450F is powered by 2x 54 HP Yanmars. With one engine at 2400 rpm you will get around 5-6 knots as long as you are not heading into wind. With both engines at 2800 you will get 8-9 knots out of her in calm conditions.

It’s pretty easy to see why the Lagoon 450F and 450S are such hot sellers. They hit the sweet spot for the charter market (2+ families on board), and they have managed to appeal to owner-operator cruisers as well. Many disparagingly refer to the Lagoon 450 as a “condomaran”, but you can’t knock ’em.

This is one of the most successful catamaran models of all time and has wide appeal. The 450 delivers high comfort and solid performance in a great value package.

Is the Lagoon 450 the French Manufacturer´s best selling boat? No, that would be the 380, although that catamaran is no longer in production. The 450 is probably the best selling current model.

How many Lagoon 450s have been built? Lagoon have built over 700 units of this model

What is the top speed of the Lagoon 450? Well, if you are surfing down a wave on a reach you might see speed in the low to mid teens, but this is a boat built primarily for comfort and to get you to your destination safely. You will probably average 7- 8 knots.

How close can a 450 Lagoon sail to the wind? She will sail at 45° to apparent which will give you a COG of around 55°. Stick the leeward engine on to point higher or sail with the Trades!

Do Lagoon still manufacture the 450? The 450F is no longer in production, having been replaced by the 46. At the time of publishing, the 450S is still featured as available.

Luxury Crewed Charter Rates

The Horizon Yacht Charters BVI Crewed Charter rates are for 7 nights per vessel and are based on the number of guests. Please see individual yacht pages for detailed specifications and charter rates. Horizon Yacht Charters luxury crewed yacht charters come complete with your own personal Captain & Chef (and in the larger yachts, first mate and hostess). NB some yachts may be skipper only (with the option of a chef) – they are stated as such. Your meals aboard are included in the rate and prepared to your group’s individual preferences and dietary requirements. Beverages are also included but please note special requests for specific brands may be subject to an additional charge. Watersports equipment (such as paddleboards, kayaks etc) are also included and some yachts offer all-inclusive diving.

High season rates typically apply from December to April, and Low season from May to November, but please do check the seasonal rates for your yacht.

Each individual crewed yacht may charge for certain additional expenses (e.g. National Park Permit, Cruising permit, different port collections or departures). Please ask for a full breakdown of costs for your chosen yacht. Additional supplements may apply at Christmas and New Year.

Lagoon Catamarans:

The global launch for the catamaran was in Düsseldorf boat show in January 2019.

Fountaine Pajot Catamarans:

Created in 1976 by Jean-François Fountaine, later in 1983, the brand’s first sail cruising catamaran, the Louisiane 37, became a commercial success. Nowadays, the Fountaine Pajot name is associated with spacious, comfortable cruising catamarans, both for the private and charter ownership market. The Elba was first introduced in 2019 and replaced the FP Helia 44 and is part of a new series of aesthetically enhanced FP catamarans ranging from the Isla, Astrea, and now also the new 51.

FOUNTAINE PAJOT ELBA Exterior

The objective view:

The architects’ design feat is to have managed to maintain fluid and harmonious lines on the Elba 45 thanks to small details such as the very slender bimini, the skillfully cut side windows and the metallic grey trim on the edges of the coachroof, the catamaran undeniably has an elegant profile. As for the hull, the emphasis was placed on the shape aft, stretched out. The fixed skegs are short – only 1.20 m (4’) draft – facilitating access to shallower water.

The deck layout of the Elba 45 combines the requirements of sailing with areas for relaxation. L et’s start with the cockpit: it is well protected by the bimini as this extends far aft. The cockpit table can seat 8 guests, or even 12 by opting for the extension. A sunbathing area is integrated on the port side. The ease of access to the sugar-scoops/transoms is sufficient. The Elba comes with an optional large aft platform: it is equipped with integrated davits and can accommodate a 3.40 m (11’) tender with its outboard raised. The side-decks, nowhere narrower than 66 cm (2’2”) wide, are safe, with a beautiful handrail at the exit of the cockpit. Forward, an 8.5 m² (92 sq ft) deck saloon with reclining seatbacks and still two trampolines.

Access to the flybridge is easy, via the starboard side-deck or from the cockpit. You reach the sail trimming console, which is easy to read. A system of trunking allows the maneuvers from the port side to be transferred across to starboard. Just behind the sail handling console, the helm station. A large relaxation area is also provided on the flybridge/ skylounge.

Our Comments:

Flush deck hatches, a sleek profile with a reversed bow, and a large seating area on the flybridge/ sky lounge make the Elba stand out. The sky lounge is the largest in its class of sport-top catamarans in the 44-45ft range. Just like the L46, it has an abundance of different social areas and easy walk-around ergonomics. No different from the L46, the option to mount a bathing platform allows you to combine the space for an even larger ocean lounge and bathing platform and easy access to mount your dingy. The flow of moments when at sail among the crew and guests is naturally a bit different as the Elba is designed with a sport-top and sky lounge instead of the helm on a full flybridge of the L46.

The design around the helm differs from the L46 and how you will operate the boat under sail. The semi-flybridge or sport-top helm takes up the starboard side of the cockpit with a ladder up to the flybridge seating area. The driver at the helm sits snug in a seat accessible with a narrow entry from the steps at the starboard side. The seat is comfortable for two persons with views of the starboard side of the midship. Controlpanel and instruments are easily accessible however, the winches are placed on the coachroof in front of the helm and is a place where one person can operate and lines need to be stored for else it will get cluttered as its the only way up and down to the helm and flybridge. If you were single-handing, you’d need to engage the autopilot to move around and trim, but all the sheets and control lines apart from the optional gennaker or code sail come back to the helm station, mostly on nice short runs that keep friction down.

The sailplan and rigging on the Elba are more classic than the L46 as it has a standard genoa headsail with full batten classic mainsail. There is no self-tacking jib on the Elba as the designer preferred to have a genoa a little bit bigger to have a better-balanced sailing plan. The yard claims that the larger headsail keeps boat speed up in light winds and means that there is less need for a dedicated reaching sail. The boom is certainly a bit longer and it’s a bit lower than on the L46 for easier access to the mainsail and lazybag.

The cockpit has a large table that seats 8 people with an optional upgrade to seat 12 people which is great. What stands out from the L46 is the fixed seating area in the middle of the cockpit that also houses another storage unit underneath the seats. The style is contemporary and the flow of space and movement as you will pass the catwalks or enter the saloon is balanced and even the fixed seating area in the middle of the cockpit doesn’t feel intrusive. Similar to the L46 but more noticeable on the Elba are the large sliding doors and windows to the saloon.

Lagoon 46 Exterior

The Lagoon 46 is designed for uncompromised performance . The hulls are optimized for form and volume with vertical bows. Lagoon’s total sail area (127 m2 vs. 124 m2) is slightly larger than the Elba 45, and the self-tacking jib is almost as large as the genoa of the Elba 45 (46.5 m2 vs. 49 m2). The Lagoon 46 is heavier than the Fountaine Pajot Elba 45. The mast is placed a bit further aft, and the foretriangle is larger than usual. This allows for more choices of headsails and ensures efficiency. FlatWinder mainsail track is placed on the roof.

The flybridge on the Lagoon has two functions with sunbeds and the helm station – a balance between comfort and steering . Compared to the Elba 45, the L46 has a full flybridge with a large sunbathing area with wide sunbeds with adjustable backrests in two rows positioned just aft of the central helm. The flybridge is accessible from both sides of the catwalks. The helm is positioned in the centre with easy access to the winches and with a large console that houses a larger plotter and navigational screen than offered on the Elba 45.

Lagoon’s one-level cockpit at the back gives safe and easy access to the sea. The space is designed to accommodate up to 12 guests. There is a bench at the back and an eating area with an L-shaped sofa on the port side. On the starboard side, there is an outdoor galley and a lounge bench. There is also a large storage space against the saloon bulkhead. For hoisting the dinghy, here are also two options: single davit system or Tenderlift platform. At the front cockpit, there is a U-shaped lounge sofa and two trampolines.

Our comments:

Starting at the cockpit, the L46 also offers the idea of an ocean lounge and a combined tender lift with the optional bathing platform. The L46 has slightly larger sugarscops/transoms than the Elba 45. The L46 doesn’t come with a dedicated area for the grill/plancha. However, anyone that has used a plancha on boat before knows that the best place to bbq on a yacht is on the bathing platform/ transom, as you are likely to spill some grease someday and the options to mount custom-fitted bbq/planchas where you can decide on the hight and place of it to create a more ergonomic condition for the person cooking has increasingly become more popular.

Another noticeable difference in cockpit layout design between the Lagoon 46 and the Elba 45, is the wet bar and surface areas in and around the galley facing the saloon, offering more options for the owner that loves to cook. The L46 has a neat function where one par of the bench on the shirt side of the cockpit table can be slid to the front to fold open the table and enlarge the dining table.

Accessing the flybridge from both sides offers not just fewer bottlenecks when moving around the different social areas on deck, but also a quick way for the captain and guest/co-skipper to manage the maneuvers when docking. The L46 flybridge is large and considered to be more a viewpoint or relaxing area for sunbathing or reading, whereas the on the Elba 45 its a seated area. The helm on the L46 is equipped with a larger wheel (90cm) compared to the Elba 45 and the positioned of the helm is centered, to allow for a 360 view of your surroundings and of both bows and sail.

Neither the helm on the Elba 45 nor the L46 are ideal places for easy mooring/docking, however with the extra communications hatches mounted on the flybridge of the L46 facing aft to the saloon, and with the optional cameras, it’s easier docking than one can imagine.

The L46 comes with a standard self-tacking jib and with a lot of sail area to compensate for the more displacements such a yacht requires for the owners that want a true liveaboard catamaran. Although the L46 offers easier handling under sail (single-handed), the problem comes when getting to the mainsail as the boom is higher than on the Elba 45. This is easily amended with the option of either re-inforced parts on a canvas bimini top or to chose the options Hard-Top (grp) bimini top for easy access to the boom and lazy bag. Another option for the owner that wants to combine even greater sailing capabilities, is to choose an in-boom furling system, to which you never need to pack the mainsail and you can easily reef and manage the headsail from one electrical winch.

The final feature that is similar but somewhat different between the Lagoon 46 and the Elba 45 is the front cockpit: the forward-facing cockpit of the Lagoon 46 offers a seated area with a recessed part of the hull, where the Elba 45 offers a sunbathing area with backrest on the cushions.

THE FOUNTAINE PAJOT ELBA Interior

The nacelle is of course flush-decked with the cockpit. The nacelle interior, with a beautiful headroom of 2.17 m (7’1”), meets modern needs: no more real traditional chart table but a vast panel that groups all the dials , near the cockpit and therefore the helm station.

The galley takes advantage of this to make itself comfortable: a large worktop and many storage spaces are available. The same goes for the saloon, which incorporates a clever modular lounger – perfect for reading or watchkeeping while sailing. The table measures 164 by 84 cm (65 x 33”). The standard tabletop is of the low table type, but it is possible to order a higher table and even one that can be transformed into a double berth. The ventilation has been well-thought-out, with a large opening hatch, forward. The yard has installed overhead openings: lots of natural light, a view of the sail plan from the interior, but you will need to opt for blackout blinds when sailing in hot weather.

The manufacturer offers two layouts for this boat: Maestro with three cabins and three bathrooms or Quartet with, as you guessed it, four cabins and as many bathrooms. The port hull is entirely dedicated to the owner – the companionway is closed to take advantage of all the available volume. As a result, the opening to the aft double berth is maximum – nothing like the traditional cabin door. In the corridor, a real desk, plenty of storage space, and a large bathroom upfront. On the other side, two more traditional cabins – with an island bed for easy access.

Each cabin is ventilated by two hatches or panels. Overall, the finish and woodwork in Alpi are very carefully done, except for a few points of detail – areas of unvarnished wood for example.

In the saloon, the designers have opted for a more modern approach of removing the navigational station completely and the chartplotter and instrument panel has been demoted from the traditional area normally found in the front of the saloon to a smaller area around a technical cabinet on the starboard side of the aft door. This is different from the Lagoon 46, which has kept the nav-station and made it into a seating area as well. On the Elba 45, you can still pull up a chair and consult the read-out – which is now just a step from the bottom of the helm station stairs – but there’s no dedicated space to spread out a chart and get to work with the plotter and dividers.

The saloon is certainly light and airy and there are a lot of worktop areas (similar to the Lagoon 46) and countertop areas (more than the Lagoon 46) with the extended galley portside, different to the Lagoon 46 which has an U-shaped galley on the port side. The galley set-up is somewhat different where the Elba 45 has its stove and burner placed forward port side, as opposed to the L46 which has both its sink and stove/burner facing the aft of the saloon and the cockpit.

The interior design and finishing resemble the increasingly modern and common approach in yachts nowadays, with a lot of angles of the interior furniture and light colors and materials found in modern luxury apartments. In the Elba 45 as opposed to the Lagoon 46, the mast is not placed in the middle of the saloon but rather as far forward as possible in the saloon behind the longside sofa.

Entering the hulls and the cabins then you will find that both hulls on the Elba 45, including the owners and guest cabins, have a similar design and approach as found on the Lagoon 46, apart from minor differences in the cupboards/ wardrobes and the bathroom of the owners’ cabin. One noticeable difference between the owners’ cabin of the Elba 45 and the Lagoon 46, is that shower is longside in the owners’ ensuite bathroom and that the owners’ cabin of the Elba 45 comes with a large mirror midship facing the bed.

Lagoon 46 Interior

Similar to the Elba 45, The Lagoon 46 has also a 360-degree layout in the saloon. There is an U-shaped galley at port and an L-shaped sofa with a dining table at starboard front corner, facing the aft cockpit. There is a navigation area on the port side front corner. Similar to the Elba 45, the Lagoon 46 has sliding glass doors and windows that give lots of natural light and ventilation as well as enhance the flow between the interior and exterior .

The choice of Alpi walnut trim contrasts with the light oak that has become widespread to the point of saturation. The light (indirect LED strips) provides a very popular subdued effect.

When it comes to the layout of the Lagoon 46, you can choose between three or four cabins . The front and aft cabins are identical and always with separate heads and showers ensuite. The combination of functionality and elegant finish (with the option of the “elegance line”) gives you an impression of a luxury hotel room . The cabins are very spacious and comfortable, thanks to the specially formed hulls with extra width above the waterline. With the 4-cabin version, it’s possible to have crew cabins in both bows.

In the owner’s cabin, the design of the furniture has been completely renewed (desk, bookcase, sofa) compared to the older generation Lagoon catamarans such as the Lagoon 459. In the owner’s version, as with the Elba 45, the XXL bathroom and separate heads compartment is worthy of a small superyacht.

The Lagoon 46 shares the same light interior and modern and spacious design but differs noticeably from the Elba 45 in some key aspects. The Lagoon 46 comes with a U-shaped galley with a cooker/burner and sink facing aft and with considerable a lot more storage units and space for home appliances and fridge/ freezer units than the Elba 45. The saloon on the Lagoon 46 offers more storage units.

A drawback from moving the mast aft and centering the weight of the yacht is that you will have the steeped mast in the middle of the saloon. Where the Lagoon 46 and the Elba 45 share a similar-sized sofa in the saloon, they differ in the way that the saloon sofa and table of the Lagoon 46 also can be used as a dining area and is more adaptable t this than on the Elba 45.

You will also find that the Lagoon 46 has opted to keep their forward-facing navigational station, to also serve as an extra office area, where you can choose for more privacy in the owner’s cabin desk unit or seat in this space in the salon and be part of what is going on deck level.

Moving down to the owner cabin, as mentioned above, you will find a refined desk and sofa unit, that is elegantly designed to serve as a dresser unit, relaxing area to read and getaway, or as your office with enough storage and units for the couple with kids that work from their boat.

Another key feature and difference between the Lagoon 46 and the Elba 45, is the cupboards/wardrobe, where the Lagoon 46 is fitted with full-length wardrobes to accommodate for dresses or longer jackets/clothing items to hang freely.

In both hulls of the Lagoon 46 compared to the Elba 45, you will find that there is slightly more light as the extra hull windows and extra-large deck hatches fluds the interior with natural light.

With the optional Elegance Line , the Lagoon 46 looks every bit as modern as the Elba 45, but feels more elegant and almost like the interior of a superyacht.

Boat: Aspiring Owner	layout as a . We have and would love to be able to give each of them a space of their own. Wasting $2k per month for a rundown three bedroom apartment is just gnawing at us when we could be paying that much or less for an "apartment on the water". I'd much rather invest in a depreciating asset than one that will never be mine at all. The catch is that we aren't in a position to get a traditional loan, hence the unrealistic part. We would need some kind of owner . The payments aren't a problem given what we're used to paying for rent, and we would be able to save up through the year for all the outside of that. It's just the loan part that puts up a wall. We'd love to find a that maybe is in rough shape and the owner just doesn't have the time or to fix it up. Perhaps a solid and mostly working and and on their last legs. Not a "lost cause" or anything, but something that your average buyer probably doesn't want and the owner is open to more unconventional options. So yeah, that's the dream...hopefully there's some way it can become a reality. Thanks for listening!

, and my post below mentioned our intention to avoid that. Won't go into the details, but suffice to say we have a few ideas on how to avoid that very expensive option.

I actually lived in a 34' RV for a couple of years, and they don't really get all that much bigger than that. For a of five, with all the kids being teens, we really want something with a bit more space. I also really, really want to get away from crowds of people, and RV/trailer parks are so crowded in together...another reason we want to avoid .

Appreciate the suggestion, though! Still going after the dream!

I think you'll find that a seller willing to owner-finance a $250k boat will want a reasonable rate of return (figure a minimum of 5% on the low end, so a 20 year loan on $250k will run you ~$1700/month). Further, they will want full insurance (budget 2% of value, so $5k annually); full maintenance ($10k-25k annually depending on what they trust you to do versus what they demand a pro handles, not including the fix-ups you intend to do); and the ability to dictate where you can or can't go with his/her collateral. So on top of your $1700 a month boat payment for 20 years, you should budget another $1500-2000 a month to cover routine boat expenses (which do not add to the value of the boat or pay down your loan). If that is not in your budget, don't go anywhere near a $250k boat. This does not include dockage, but you may have a way around that? Not intending to be a dream-crusher, just want you to be prepared for reality.

problems, not the least of which will be endless and maintenance issues plus berthing issues, issues, issues, issues, issues, etc etc

They will all cost you money.

These days there seem to be a lot of people who think that living on a boat is a way to save money on living expenses. Chances are you will not find that to be the case. If you are a male who never needs to bathe, wash clothes, or do the dishes you might be able to achieve your goal. With a family of four the novelty will soon wear off and you'll tire of the life on a boat. At that will come sooner.

My wife once said, early in our years aboard, "Why would anyone choose to if they don't go sailing quite a lot?"

Most wouldn't. Liking sailing is probably the one good reason to live on a boat. It isn't your reason.

You are better off improving your value as an employee and making more money.

Two months after being cleared in a bruising legal battle over fraud charges, the British tech mogul Mike Lynch celebrated his freedom with a cruise. He invited his family, friends and part of his legal team on board his luxury sailing yacht, a majestic 180-foot vessel named Bayesian after the mathematical theorem around which he had built his empire.

On Sunday night, after a tour of the Gulf of Naples, including Capri, and volcanic islands in the Eolian archipelago, the boat anchored half a mile off the Sicilian coast in Porticello, Italy. It chose a stretch of water favored by the Phoenicians thousands of years ago for its protection from the mistral wind and, in more recent times, by the yachts of tech billionaires. The boat was lit “like a Christmas tree,” local residents said, standing out against the full moon.

But about 4 a.m., calamity unfolded. A violent and fast storm hit the area with some of the strongest winds locals said they had ever felt. Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman, said he saw a flare pierce the darkness shortly after 4.

Minutes later, the yacht was underwater. Only dozens of cushions from the boat’s deck and a gigantic radar from its mast floated on the surface of the sea, fishermen said.

In all, 22 people were on board, 15 of whom were rescued. Six bodies — five passengers and the ship’s cook — had been recovered by Thursday afternoon, including that of Mr. Lynch, an Italian government official said, adding that the search was continuing for his daughter.

It was a tragic and mystifying turn of events for Mr. Lynch, 59, who had spent years seeking to clear his name and was finally inaugurating a new chapter in his life. Experts wondered how a $40 million yacht, so robust and stable could have been sunk by a storm near a port within minutes.

“It drives me insane,” said Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company, Perini, that made the Bayesian. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”

The aura of misfortune only deepened when it emerged that Stephen Chamberlain, 52, a former vice president of finance for Mr. Lynch’s former company and a co-defendant in the fraud case, was killed two days earlier, when he was hit by a car while jogging near his house in England.

Since June, the two men had been in a jubilant mood. A jury in San Francisco had acquitted both on fraud charges that could have sent them to prison for two decades. There were hugs and tears, and they and their legal teams went for a celebratory dinner party at a restaurant in the city, said Gary S. Lincenberg, a lawyer for Mr. Chamberlain.

The sea excursion was meant as a thank-you by Mr. Lynch to those who had helped him in his legal travails. Among the guests was Christopher J. Morvillo, 59, a scion of a prominent New York family of lawyers who had represented Mr. Lynch for 12 years. He and his wife, Neda, 57, were among the missing.

So, too, was Jonathan Bloomer, 70, a veteran British insurance executive who chaired Morgan Stanley International and the insurer Hiscox.

The body of the ship’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered. All the other crew members survived. Among them was Leo Eppel, 19, of South Africa, who was on his first yacht voyage working as a deck steward, said a friend, who asked not to be identified.

Since the sinking, the recovery effort and investigation have turned the tiny port town of Porticello, a quiet enclave where older men sit bare-chested on balconies, into what feels like the set of a movie.

Helicopters have flown overhead. Ambulances have sped by with the sirens blaring. The Coast Guard has patrolled the waters off shore, within sight of a cordoned-off dock that had been turned into an emergency headquarters.

On Wednesday afternoon, a church bell tolled after the first body bag was loaded into an ambulance, a crowd watching in silence.

The survivors were sheltering in a sprawling resort near Porticello, with a view of the shipwreck spot, and had so far declined to comment.

Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said that the yacht had most likely been hit by a fierce “down burst” — when air generated within a thunderstorm descends rapidly — or by a waterspout , similar to a tornado over water.

He added that his agency had put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about storms and strong winds. Locals said the winds “felt like an earthquake.”

Mr. Costantino, the boat executive, said the yacht had been specifically designed for having a tall mast — the second-tallest aluminum mast in the world. He said the Bayesian was an extremely safe and secure boat that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing.

But he said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, is to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck.

12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.

The New York Times attempted to reach the captain, James Cutfield, who had survived, for comment through social media, his brother and the management company of the yacht (which did not hire the crew), but did not make contact.

So far none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened that night.

Fabio Genco, the director of Palermo’s emergency services, who treated some of the survivors, said that the victims had recounted feeling as if the boat was being lifted, then suddenly dropped, with objects from the cabins falling on them.

The Italian Coast Guard said it had deployed a remotely operated vehicle that can prowl underwater for up to seven hours at a depth of more than 980 feet and record videos and images that they hoped would help them reconstruct the dynamics of the sinking. Such devices were used during the search and rescue operations of the Titan vessel that is believed to have imploded last summer near the wreckage of the Titanic.

After rescuers broke inside the yacht, they struggled to navigate the ropes and many pieces of furniture cluttering the vessel, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for Italy’s national firefighter corps.

Finally, as of Thursday morning, they had managed to retrieve all but one of the missing bodies, and hopes of finding the missing person alive were thin. “Can a human being be underwater for two days?” Mr. Cari asked.

What was certain was that Mr. Lynch’s death was yet another cruel twist of fate for a man who had spent years seeking to clear his name.

He earned a fortune in technology and was nicknamed Britain’s Bill Gates. But for more than a decade, he had been treated as anything but a respected tech leader.

He was accused by Hewlett-Packard, the American technological pioneer that had bought his software company, Autonomy, for $11 billion, of misleading it about his company’s worth. (Hewlett-Packard wrote down the value of the transaction by about $8.8 billion, and critics called it one of the worst deals of all time .) He had been increasingly shunned by the British establishment that he sought to break into after growing up working-class outside London.

He was extradited to San Francisco to face criminal charges, and confined to house arrest and 24-hour surveillance on his dime. In a townhouse in the Pacific Heights neighborhood — with security people he jokingly told associates were his “roommates” — he spent his mornings talking with researchers whom he funded personally on new applications for artificial intelligence. Afterward, he devoted hours to discussing legal strategy with his team.

Despite his persistent claims of innocence, even those close to Mr. Lynch had believed his odds of victory were slim. Autonomy’s chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted in 2018 of similar fraud charges and spent five years in prison.

During Mr. Lynch’s house arrest, his brother and mother died. His wife, Angela Bacares, frequently flew over from England, and she became a constant presence in the San Francisco courtroom during the trial.

After he was finally acquitted, Mr. Lynch had his eye on the future. “I am looking forward to returning to the U.K. and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” he said.

Lagoon 35 CCC

Refreshingly, Jeanneau is so up front about the capabilities of their newest Lagoon cat that they’ve initialed them in the boat’s title. The “three Cs” of the Lagoon 35 CCC stand, without fanfare, for Coastal Cruising Catamaran. Racing to Bermuda? Look elsewhere.

Surprisingly, the boat was created by Gino Morrelli and Pete Melvin, among America’s most successful multihull duo from involvement in the controversial 1988 America’s Cup catamaran defense to Tornado-class Olympic campaigns. Initially, the M&M design team hardly conjures “cruising.”

Performance was clearly prioritized. Although the 35 employs a single-spreader rig that flies a relatively conservative sail plan of 620 square feet (including Profurl roller jib) the key to maintaining average speeds in the high single digits in moderate to fresh breezes is the easily driven hull and lightish displacement for a boat of this size — about 9,500 pounds unloaded.

The steering station with full instrument array and engine controls nicely fronts a comfortable seat for extended sessions at the helm. Halyards, sheets and reefing lines are led aft to a series of three cockpit-mounted self-tailing winches for quick and efficient sail handling; standard lazy jacks for the mainsail keep things tidy when tucking reefs or dousing altogether. The mostly Lewmar deck hardware package features rope clutches, blocks, genoa cars, traveler and so on.

The wondrous and vast deck space, typical of cats, includes a languorous cockpit stationed just forward of twin sets of transom steps for graceful boardings and exits ashore, for hopping a dinghy or for taking a plunge. Molded-in steps forward of the raised cabin gives ready access to the small trampoline between the hulls.

A tidy anchoring arrangement leads the rode under the tramp from a forward roller to a huge gasketed locker aft, which provides compartments for ground tackle, spare line, shore power cord, and plenty of other loose but necessary stuff.

You move from cockpit into the main saloon through a folding Plexiglas door. On the upper “floor” of the usual split-level bridge-deck arrangement, the galley to port opposite a big settee and dining area keeps the cook and the company together for socializing and both close to the cockpit when under way or at anchor. There are two big double berths aft, and a huge, airy head with roomy shower stall in the starboard hull. The port hull bow can contain a second custom head, a large single berth, or a workshop/storage area.

Beneath the double berths, access to a pair of standard Yanmar 1GM10 diesel inboards (bigger Yanmars are optional) is excellent. Coupled to fixed two-bladed props, the twin engines drive the 35 CCC at an effortless 7.5 to eight knots and make maneuverability in even the tightest of turnarounds a snap.

Like its 37- and 42-foot sister ships, the Lagoon 35 CCC is built in the United States by TPI using the revolutionary but proven SCRIMP resin-infusion process, and incorporates biaxial glass and a balsa core. Jeanneau’s 10-year blister/five-year structural warranty is one of the best in the boatbuilding business.

This latest Lagoon is very simple to sail and operate. It will redefine what you think is possible in under 35 feet of waterline for quick and comfortable coastwise exploration, lots of fun under sail and plenty of comfort when the hook is down.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
