Guest Accommodation

Octopus offers guest accommodation for up to 12 guests in 13 suites comprising a master suite and twelve double cabins.

The suite also includes a master observation lounge and a private dining deck that seats six guests, perfect for intimate gatherings. Luxury explorer yacht OCTOPUS was built by Lurssen in 2003 with naval architecture from Espen Øino and interiors created by Jonathan Quinn Barnett. Originally constructed for private expeditions she was refitted, making her suitable for charter, in 2021 with further work in 2024. She is one of the most capable and stunning mega yachts in the world with a fascinating legacy, having travelled the globe hosting rock stars, scientific research teams and explorers in search of shipwrecks and maritime artefacts. With 13 staterooms and 45 crew members, there is nothing she can’t do and nowhere she can’t go.

EXTERIOR The ice-class hull and eight towering decks put OCTOPUS firmly in the mega explorer yacht category and with her deep blue hull, gleaming white superstructure and vast floodable tender and toy garage, she is simply awe inspiring. Guests will either arrive at the stern on board the 9.34m custom Vikal International Limousine tender or onto one of the helidecks – the aft deck is available for commercial use and the foredeck for touch and go. All the deck officers are certified as Helicopter Landing Officers and the deckhands as Helideck Assistants for emergency use. When the transom door is opened, a two-level 36m long floodable garage is revealed – from here the crew can store, launch and maintain the incredible fleet of tenders and toys. Two fold-out terraces create a beach club with a hot-tub on the starboard side and a fully registered and equipped dive centre on the port side.

Deck 6 – the bridge deck – is the main exterior guest terrace where a fabulous 7m freshwater swimming pool is accompanied by a large semi-circular custom jacuzzi. When it is time to party, the glass retractable floor of the pool raises flush with the deck level to transform the deck into a huge entertainment terrace. A beautiful 12-seater dining table sits overlooking the pool with two additional 6-seater tables which can be arranged flexibly to suit any group. A full sit up bar, three separate lounge areas and sunbeds complete the furnishings available on this level. The chefs can prepare al fresco meals in the industrial pizza/baker’s oven, on the huge outdoor grill or the built-in tandoori oven. The deck is equipped with state-of-the-art AV equipment which includes a sound system, flood lights and disco lights. The top deck is dedicated to the owner’s penthouse apartment which includes its own private decks forward and aft. Aft is an intimate dining terrace with 6-seater table and two corner sofas while forward is a beautifully appointed area with a jacuzzi, lounge and sit up bar.

INTERIOR Once inside it is clear to see how Jonathan Quinn Barnett’s interior design has endured with only some minor layout alterations and décor upgrades from Monk Design in 2021. The original design included a fully-equipped recording studio – where greats such as U2 and Mick Jagger have recorded. Now the studio, in its prime position aft on the bridge deck, has been converted into modern bar and lounge. The vocal booth is now a DJ booth, a collection of guitars still adorns the walls, and the grand piano takes pride of place. Retaining the soundproofing makes the studio lounge into a perfect place for a party – plus it leads out onto the bridge deck aft to create one huge entertainment space. Deck 5 is the main interior entertainment deck where guests can enjoy a range of activities from gym sessions and beauty treatments to dinner and drinks or even a movie in the state-of-the-art 15-seater movie theatre – 5 of the seats have D Box vibration to elevate the experience further. Forward of the central staircase is a gentleman’s library and lounge with fireplace, a chess table opening to the 'Musashi' wine bar and impressive observation lounge/dining area with two circular tables able to each accommodate six guests with panoramic views forward. The ‘Musashi’ wine bar is named after the 2015 research expedition on board when the WW2 warship Musashi was discovered. The well-equipped gym leads into a dedicated juice bar, perfect for refuelling after a workout.

OCTOPUS Specifications

The captain and first officer’s accommodation, office and the wheelhouse are forward on the bridge deck, while the galley and pantry are conveniently located on the entertainment deck on the port side. Decks two and three are for the crew and operations where generous cabins, a lounge and crew galley are alongside technical and communications areas.

The medical centre is on Deck 4 and a guest cabin can be used to accommodate a doctor on board. A dedicated elevator gives direct access to decks 4-7, facilitating travel throughout the yacht with discretion. Eight MTU 16V 4000 diesel engines deliver a top speed of 19 knots and a cruising speed of 12.5 with a range of 12,500 nautical miles. The yacht is also equipped with Dynamic Positioning Systems to automatically maintain the position.

Yacht Charter Accommodation

Thirteen guest staterooms are across Deck 3, 4 and 7 and are configured to offer flexible accommodation. The master apartment is full beam on the Deck 7 and includes a king-sized bed, his and hers ensuite bathrooms with skylights, a large dressing room and access to the private observation lounge on Deck 8. Seven staterooms are located on Deck 4: a full beam VIP with lounge, dining and pantry plus superb ensuite with bathtub and rain shower; a VIP with ensuite and an adjoining double; four ensuite queen cabins and one twin with separate single bedroom with sofa and ensuite (ideal for children and nanny). Deck 4 includes two twin ensuite cabins and two queen doubles with sofa/daybed and ensuite. All the ensuite bathrooms benefit from underfloor heating while the suites have smart TVs with Apple TV throughout.

In a previous article, we talked about winter storage and why it’s important . Today, we are going to see how to take storage to an extreme. Carrying tenders is a common feature of almost every luxury yacht, yet it’s the way in which these vessels transport them that sets the average yachts apart from the truly remarkable ones, which are able to effortlessly stow and deploy their tenders with unparalleled ease and sophistication. Take a look at some of the finest examples from around the world, starting with Nebula , the largest toy carrier with a helideck and a custom catamaran.

Nebula, a remarkable support vessel built by Astilleros Armón and Incat Crowther, boasts an impressive design that prioritizes accommodating toys, tenders, and crew. The tender garage, situated below the helideck, is a veritable marvel, featuring a 12.3-meter custom catamaran – endearingly referred to as the “shadow kitten” by designer Kirsten Schwalgien – as well as two RIBs and four Jet Skis, all effortlessly deployed via beam cranes boasting an impressive 11-tonne lifting capacity. To reduce the vessel’s height to three meters while hoisted on the deck, the top hydraulically lowers. Moreover, Nebula also boasts a full-size helicopter hangar, which can accommodate an Airbus H145 and provides cover for the tender garage below – the largest such hangar onboard any private vessel. The Wider 165, also known as Cecilia, was a major milestone for Wider, taking their innovative approach to yacht design to a new level. The float-in tender garage of Cecilia is a sight to behold, big enough to accommodate not only an eight-meter tender but also a three-person U-Boat Worx submarine. This impressive feature was a hit at the Monaco Yacht Show, where Cecilia made her debut. The Jules Verne-esque manipulator hand of the submarine, clutching a bottle of Bollinger, was a testament to the imagination and innovation that went into the design of this yacht. Launching the submersible is a breeze, thanks to the sophisticated crane installed overhead. But that’s not all that sets Cecilia apart from other yachts. When the tender bay is flooded, and both the tender and submarine are out, the area is transformed into a saltwater pool, providing a luxurious and refreshing way to cool off on a hot day. The aft end of the yacht is closed up, and the superstructure folds down on either side to create a vast sunbathing area on the long stern platform. Sanlorenzo’s Seven Sins, the first 52 Steel model, is a true masterpiece of modern yacht engineering and design. The vessel’s standout feature is undoubtedly the float-in tender garage that effortlessly transforms into a luxurious beach club. To achieve this engineering feat, Sanlorenzo’s team had to work with limited space, leading to meticulous planning, poring over plans and a plethora of engineering challenges that had to be overcome. The club’s beauty is heightened by the light filtering down from the glass bottom of the pool above, creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere perfect for relaxation. The team of architects and engineers at Sanlorenzo had their work cut out for them, but their hard work paid off, resulting in a breathtaking yacht that boasts a unique and innovative tender garage/beach club feature. Seven Sins is a testament to Sanlorenzo’s commitment to excellence, engineering, and design. The vessel’s ability to effortlessly combine practicality, elegance, and luxury is a testament to the innovation that Sanlorenzo is known for.

Abeking & Rasmussen is a name synonymous with excellence in yacht building and they did not disappoint when it came to Aviva. The 98.4 metre vessel boasts an impressive interior designed by British design house RWD, which won the coveted Best Lifestyle Feature at the Boat International Design & Innovation Awards in 2018. The launch and retrieval system is incredibly sophisticated, with hydraulic arms and sensors ensuring a smooth and safe launch every time. Beyond the Hunton XRS43, Aviva’s toy box is filled with all sorts of watercraft and watersports equipment, including two Sea-Doo personal watercraft, Seabobs, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and more. And for those who prefer to stay dry, there is a state-of-the-art cinema and an observation lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows that offer panoramic views of the surrounding seascape. Overall, Aviva is a masterpiece of yacht design, showcasing the perfect blend of luxury and adventure.

J’ade, the 58.2-metre CRN superyacht, is not only a sight to behold, but also an engineering marvel. With its transverse float-in tender dock designed specifically for an 8.24-metre Riva Iseo, J’ade is a testament to the innovative spirit of the CRN shipyard. The tender dock takes up almost the entire cross-section of the hull and contains around 5,000 gallons of water, making it the perfect spot to store and launch the Riva Iseo. Thanks to the engineers at CRN, the tender garage can be pumped out in less than three minutes, making it easy to access and launch the tender quickly and efficiently. To make this possible, the existing naval platform used for the shipyard’s 60-metre vessels had to be modified, and a study of the compartment’s effect on the ship’s trim had to be conducted to meet the classification requirements. Such attention to detail and commitment to excellence is what sets J’ade apart from other superyachts in its class. Not only is the tender garage practical and efficient, but it is also designed to protect the Riva Iseo from damage, with its very own tub. The underwater lights on the tender garage add a touch of dramatic effect to the whole experience. And let’s not forget the shell door on the port side that provides access to the tender garage from the water, making it even more convenient for launching and retrieving the tender. Overall, the transverse float-in tender dock on J’ade is an excellent example of how innovation and engineering can come together to create a seamless and luxurious experience for yacht owners and their guests.

Lady Fleur’s owners had a clear vision for their next build, one that would challenge the design team to create something truly exceptional. They wanted a yacht that was just 35 meters in length, but that would include a float-in tender garage and a swimming pool for their grandchildren. This was no easy feat, but the task ultimately fell to Bernd Weel Design and Holterman Shipyard, and it was on the first X-Treme Yachts X-105 model that this vision came to fruition. The engineering of the X-Treme Yachts X-105 is truly remarkable. This monohull can temporarily transform into a catamaran, at least for the aft third of the yacht. This is achieved by splitting the engine room into two watertight sections and building a compartment between them. When the tender is launched, the aft center section of the hull then lowers to allow the tender to float out or in. Once the tender is secured in the garage, the bay fills with seawater and rises to become a safe and secure 11-meter swimming pool that sits flush with the deck. The result is nothing short of remarkable. Lady Fleur’s unique features are both functional and visually stunning. When the yacht is at anchor, the swimming pool provides an incredible place for the owners and their grandchildren to relax and enjoy the water. When the tender is launched, the pool transforms back into a tender garage, and the yacht is once again ready to explore. These innovative features have not gone unnoticed. Demonstrations of the X-Treme Yachts X-105 at the Cannes Yachting Festival created traffic jams as curious onlookers stopped to marvel at the yacht’s unique capabilities. The features also earned Lady Fleur two gongs at the prestigious BOAT International Design & Innovation Awards in 2023, a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of the design team and shipyard.

Panam, the luxury yacht built by Baglietto, is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and innovative features that make it stand out in the market. One such feature is the garage that can accommodate a 5.5-meter tender, which is transversally fitted aft of the engine room. This smart design allows for maximum use of space without compromising on performance. The garage’s lower edge is placed below the waterline, ensuring that launching and retrieving the tender is a breeze. Commissioned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, M/Y Octopus was the largest private yacht ever when it launched in 2003. Today, she remains one of the largest private yachts in the world. Her size, however, is surpassed by the scale of her ambitions. Allen himself famously described her as “less a Bentley than a Range Rover,” because of the state-of-the-art equipment on board.

Now, her 2021 refit preserves her expedition bona fides. She boasts an ice class for polar exploring; two helipads and two helicopter garages. Octopus Yacht Uncovered: An Insider’s Look at the Luxury Yacht

Launched back in the year 2003, the Octopus yacht was built by famous shipyard Lurssen out of Germany. Lurssen has been behind numerous other superyachts such as Kismet and Dilbar and many more. The exterior design was handled by Espen Øino Naval Architects while the interior was handled by American designer Jonathan Quinn Barnett.

Who Owns the Octopus Yacht?

The Octopus yacht was owned by Paul Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft. In addition to being a private pleasure yacht for Allen, the Octopus has served a variety of purposes over the years thanks to him loaning it out. It has served as an exploration vessel, been used for scientific research and has even seen use as a rescue vessel.

Allen died in 2018 and at that time the yacht underwent a refit at Blohm + Voss. In 2019 it was put on sale for a price of €295 million. The price was dropped by about 60 million and in 2021 it was picked up by an anonymous buyer. However, the anonymity didn’t last long and it was later revealed that Swedish billionaire Roger Samuelsson.

How Big is the Octopus Motor Yacht?

The Octopus more than qualifies as a superyacht coming in at an incredible 126.2 meters or 414 feet. While the largest yachts in the world are over 500 feet, the Octopus is clearly massive and could rightly be labeled a megayacht and one of the world’s largest yachts as well.

Aside from the incredible length of the vessel, it features a beam just shy of 69 feet across. The gross tonnage is 9,932.

How Much Did the Yacht Octopus Cost?

Paul Allen purchased the Octopus back in 2003. At that time the vessel cost him $200 million. Adjusted for inflation, that would work out to about $327 million by today, clearly making this one of the more expensive yachts in the world. That said, it still doesn’t meet the bar for one of the most expensive yachts ever by quite a bit.

Can You Charter the Octopus Yacht?

The Octopus is available for charter through the yacht firm Camper and Nicholsons but it’s definitely not available for most budgets. We’ve covered other yachts before that are owned by billionaires and are available for charter at some steep prices that often range around $1.2 million per week. The Octopus goes to the next level. 

You can charter the Octopus for about $2.2 million per week and that doesn’t include expenses. So you’ll be paying for things like food and fuel separately. Suffice it to say that this is not a charter for everyone but the option is there. 

Is the Octopus Yacht for Sale?

After its initial purchase in 2003 the Octopus was not available for sale until 2019 after owner Paul Allen passed away. There are currently some websites that claim the Octopus is for sale now and you can make an offer but the reliability of those sites is unknown and they do list the previous sale price from 2019 so they may not be current.

How Fast is the Octopus Yacht and What Engines Does it Use?

The Octopus has a cruising speed listed at 12.5 knots and a top speed listed at 19 knots. This is provided thanks to 8 MTU diesel engines that can generate a total of 19,200 hp. The yacht has an impressive range of up to 12,500 nautical miles at cruising speed thanks to her 1,034,000 liter fuel tanks 

What’s the Octopus Yacht Interior Like?

The Octopus covers eight decks and has room on board for a total of 26 guests and 63 crew. The guests can find accommodations in a full-beam master suite, two VIP suites, seven double rooms and three twins, one with an additional single bed.

The master suite is on a dedicated owner’s deck and features a king size bed, his and hers en suite bathrooms and a private observation deck that includes an al fresco dining area. There’s also a private bar and Jacuzzi There is also an owner exclusive private elevator for use. 

For years the details of the interior were a closely guarded secret while Paul Allen was still the owner. In fact, designer Espen Oeino said that this was the first yacht that ever required him to sign an NDA to keep its design secret. Since then he’s signed many more, but the Octopus was where it started. However, since Allen’s passing and the sale of the yacht, the transition to a vessel available for charter has allowed us to learn a lot more about the Octopus and its amenities and entertainment facilities.

Features and Amenities

The Octopus is an ice-class exploration yacht so it can go where many other luxury yachts cannot. It has two helipads as well as garages to house two helicopters. In addition, guests can find the following on board.

• There’s a large swimming pool to the aft of the yacht on the main deck. It features numerous loungers and its own cocktail bar. There’s also a retractable glass floor that covers the pool when not in use.
• A dance floor for parties
• A movie theater
• A well equipped gym for working out
• A relaxation spa that includes a sauna
• A large indoor/outdoor beach club area
• A large deck Jacuzzi
• A glass bottomed observation lounge
• A well-stocked library for those evenings when you want to curl up with a good book

For those who want to have some more intense fun out on the water, the Octopus has a number of toys that can be used.

Octopus Rescue Work

The Octopus also features a not entirely typical on board submarine and also a very rare ROV or remote operated vehicle which is essentially a remote control sub. These had been used a number of times on rescue operations when Paul Allen owned the vessel.

The sub and ROV were used to help find a pilot and two officers who vanished off the coast of Palau, and even aided the Royal Navy in finding the bell from the HMS Hood which sank off of Denmark in WWII.

The Octopus has also aided in scientific research, most notably when researchers were studying coelacanth, a species of prehistoric fish thought to have been extinct for millions of years. 

What is the Octopus Yacht Deck Plan?

You can see the full deck plans here. The Octopus was designed to feature some things you would never expect to find on a yacht. For instance, it had a fully equipped recording studio where the band U2 did some recording. The studio also hosted Usher, Mick Jagger and Joss Stone. However, the studio has since been replaced with a bar and lounge area.

In addition to the studio the yacht was designed with a storm cabin to help minimize the effects of bad weather and a full medical center in case of emergencies. Many of these features no longer exist since the retrofit after Paul Allen’s death.

One extremely unique feature is the central clock. Braided stainless-steel shrouds from a sailing vessel were strung on either side of the grand staircase from lower to upper deck. The designer enlisted the aid of a 102-year-old German clock making company to help bring the idea to life. It also uses digital audio software so that on a regular basis the strings can play snippets from literally any song to indicate the passage of time.

The Bottom Line

The Octopus yacht was once owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen until his death in 2018. Afterwards, some of the yacht was redesigned and it was sold for close to $300 million to Swedish billionaire Roger Samuelsson. 

The Octopus is a massive exploration yacht measuring 414 feet making it large but nowhere near as big as something like the massive Azzam . It has been used for scientific research and rescue missions in the past and is now available for charter though at a steep price.

While it has many of the expected amenities of luxury yachts it also features some more exotic fare like the minisub with room for 8 passengers and two crew, as well as a stunning array of toys and other features.

Yachts for charter

Octopus was the most recently built yacht of Paul Allen, one of the founders of Microsoft, who also owned the 92.38 metre Tatoosh.

Octopus features a helicopter pad and garage aft and can also accept a second helicopter on the bows. A novel facility of her design is her internal dock, which, opening from her transom, runs forward through the yacht, allowing a 20 metre submarine and a tender of similar size to float into their storage positions. Once secured, the water is pumped out, leaving them resting on chocks.

The yacht had a permanent berth in the International Yacht Club Marina in Antibes, where her owner acquired the largest dock by buying the 55.78 metre superyacht Hanse together with its berth – he kept the berth and immediately sold Hanse, which has now been renamed Insignia.

The result of a wonderful passion for creating ship models is this 1:50 scale model of the 126-metre luxury motor yacht OCTOPUS , which was built by the prestigious German shipyard Lurssen in 2003. Jurgen Goller and Roland Hache constructed the 2,52 metre superyacht OCTOPUS model and presented it for the first time on water this September. Roland Hache also built a model of the motor yacht Lady Lola (see picture at the bottom of the article).

It took two years to build the Octopus Yacht Model and she was built based only on pictures and different photos found on the internet. The two friends had absolutely no access to the general plans, layout drawings or any other designs of the original yacht.

The hull of the Octopus Yacht Model was constructed in GFK and ABS, polyester and wood were used for the rest of the parts. The railing was created using different metal parts.

Weighing 62kg, the model is fitted with 2 Bosch electrical engines and has a lead acid battery of 12 V – 7,5 Ah with a duration of about 4 hours. It has impressive 460 led lights on its five decks, which can be regulated thanks to a dimmer, showing her elegant silhouette when put on water at night.

In addition to all this, Jurgen is planning on adding some special features, such as a music player, smoke generator and sound module to create the appropriate, more realistic, cruising sound.
