Call before you go you may want to see if any seats are available as it's a very busy spot in town. The food is A1 compared to other places around the area. We had a nice seafood plate that was to die for

The New Chef has changed the menu and has added some unusual ingredients in places you don't usually see. Just a hint of jalapeno toadd a depth to the Salad dressing is an example of just one. Service was Excellent! Views even better!

Went to the Yatch Club for lunch... and the views. We weren’t disappointed! Although one of the waitress was a little dizzy and kept getting distracted others were very nice. The food was delicious! We literally only had fish and chips and a burger and... chips but they were both very tasty and well presented along with the accompanying side salad. Views were beautiful too 💟 More

A slightly more up market resturant on the waterfront offering good choice of American style food. Friendly staff and although busy never rushed.

Lovely restaurant serving delicious food on the water front. Service is fast friendly and always with a smile. The fish is tasty and fresh. The deserts were rich and well presented. Try this place. You won't regret it.

High Tide Dinner at The Marine Room: Oceanfront Dining at its Best

san diego yacht club restaurant menu

Since it opened its doors in 1941, The Marine Room has been the benchmark for quality oceanfront  dining  in La Jolla. It brought first-class French-inspired cuisine to San Diego for the first time; and with it, an inclusion of all things nautical: even its seahorse emblem, which has remained the same for more than 75 years, has become synonymous with quality and elegance.

We were invited to experience what a High Tide Dinner at this special place is all about! Here’s an inside look at the magic behind one of La Jolla’s most beloved icons.

san diego yacht club restaurant menu

76 Years in the Making

Spindrift Inn was built in 1916 and for years served as the only lodging along  La Jolla Shores . In 1935, the Inn, along with the La Jolla Beach & Yacht Club (now  La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club ), were purchased by Frederick W. Kellogg. It was actually his son, William Scripps Kellogg, who opened the restaurant we know today in 1941.

The opening day menu featured Fresh Lobster a  la Newburg in a shell for $1.35; Rainbow Mountain Trout Saute Amandine for $1.25, and martinis for just 35 cents!

Remarkably, it wasn’t until the El Nino storms of 1982 that the relentless tide forced its way through the windows and flooded the restaurant, resulting in a nine-month remodeling and restoration project. This included installation of even tougher windows; ever since, the glass has held and the windows have remained beautifully intact.

san diego yacht club restaurant menu

Not Your Typical Oceanfront View

Being situated on multiple levels, the views begin right when you step foot into the restaurant and make for a stunningly dramatic entrance. A short, winding staircase leads one to the main dining areas, where there are tables and elevated booths arranged with white linens and elegant tableware. Wall-to-wall windows give patrons a sweeping 180-degree panorama of the ocean, and waves can be heard crashing against the windows from nearly every table.

This really isn’t your typical ‘ oceanfront dining ;’ you are quite literally  on  the water, which, needless to say, makes those crashing waves all the more dramatic.

It’s interesting to note that this is the only restaurant of its kind in the area, and that is mostly due to present-day building restrictions. Because it was built in 1941, before local authorities were closely watching coastal development, the Marine Room’s construction was uninterrupted — and the result is breathtaking.

Mouthwatering Cuisine

Our dinner that evening was ordered from their specialty a la carte menu, created especially for the High Tide Dinners. We began with the signature  lobster bisque , a wonderfully sweet rendition of the classic, and the  crab cakes ; paired cleverly with acorn noodles, the cakes were warm, moist, and perfectly flavored.

For the entrees, we ordered the  Lobster tail , which was melt-in-your-mouth delicate; and the  Ahi Tuna  (recommended by our server), which did not disappoint with a side of sticky black rice, avocado, mango, and an unusually evocative white port hibiscus infusion.

Dessert was a lovely finish to the meal: the  Spindrift Cobblestone Pie , which has been on their menu for years and remained a consistent favorite. The pie comes with espresso and vanilla ice cream, toasted hazelnuts, and a perfectly flavored Maker’s Mark bourbon sauce for just the right amount of kick. It wasn’t too sweet or too heavy, which is perfect on the palate after an incredibly flavorful three-course meal. We definitely did the right thing going with seafood for our main dishes — everything was cooked to perfection.

Wall of Waves

During dinner (reservations are held from 5pm to 10pm), it’s common to see kayakers, scuba divers, and even the occasional  seal or sea lion  trying to snatch up the last of their meal. A floodlight is angled directly onto the water, illuminating sea life several feet outward and enhancing the up-close view of crashing waves.

Between courses, we took nearly every opportunity to photograph the waves crashing against the windows; there is something to be said for having that kind of entertainment to accompany your meal! High tides typically range between 4 and 5 feet above sea level, so the 6-foot to over 7-foot high tides during summer are reason enough to make this a memorable experience.

That evening, the peak tide was reported to be 6.7 feet at 9:52pm. We arrived around 8:00 and were able to see the progression towards the larger and more impressive tide. Once night fell, two seals made an appearance; our waiter noted that over the years, several seals have situated themselves right on their property for days (even weeks) at a time!

The magic of The Marine Room is more than just the waterfront views. It’s the ambiance, the attention to detail, and the tireless hospitality that truly place this restaurant in a class of its own.

Other opulent dining experiences throughout the year include Mother’s Day and Easter Brunch and special Father’s Day dinners. High Tide Breakfasts are held every October through March, and High Tide Dinners are from April through September. The Marine Room is located at 2000 Spindrift Dr. in La Jolla Shores. To make a reservation call (858) 459-7222 or visit their  website!

Came here for a birthday party, where the guest of honor reserved a room. I don't understand why so many county clubs are so outdated! The carpets, walls, etc. I guess patrons don't care about that. Our server was really sweet and took drink orders right away, but it went downhill with the food. Half of us got the wrong order, or items missing, or their food just didn't come! One member of our party didn't even get to place her order! I had to flag down the server to tell her. My food was wrong and was so disappointing. I was brought the veggie quinoa bowl and there was zero flavor to that. I asked where the fruit was for my kids, and she's like Oh we don't have any. Like, it's on the menu, and were you going to tell me?? I definitely won't go back there and would encourage anyone planning a party to look elsewhere.

Attended my company's Holiday event here, and it was a fantastic setting with a private indoor dining area, and also a beautiful outdoor patio area / bar for mingling. The staff was very friendly, and the food was excellent! Prime rib was delicious and the chicken was tender and flavorful. They have their own private Southwestern Yacht Club Cabernet, which was wonderful. Beautiful views right on the water. I don't have a boat, but this place inspires me to get one.

They call it the friendliest yacht club, and it's true. Each time we've been here we have met someone friendly. The servers are amazing, too. They have a small but solid menu. Beautiful views from dining area and dogs are allowed on the lower patio. It is a members only (reciprocal clubs included) and not open to the public.

I do not frequent many yacht clubs... You know, the club "standards" like shoes & shirt required. (Shrugs) Southwestern Yacht Club - https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=7v7dnlWhTwc7lW4Vex2ZiQ&userid=O6EBodP3Fgu_n67efSKnBQ We were at the guest slip overnight; just finished the N2E race. (i.e. - NEWPORT to enSANaDiego race) Originally, we were planning to make the sail to Ensenada but Mexico's COV-19 restrictions left plenty of room for potential problems. We were not particularly fond of being removed from the vessel; blood tested, and quarantining of the entire team... Yeh, so enSANaDiego sounded perfect! Guest Slip (Right across from the yacht club) - https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=Wt6PJs8SRPKeeS8TkWrZPQ&userid=O6EBodP3Fgu_n67efSKnBQ To say the skipper and crew were tired, hungry, and a bit edgy after the 20 hour race would be a huge understatement. BW'HA! 'And after almost a full day of sailing down the coast, one can work up quite a thirst. It was time for a drink!... 'Or three. "Okole mauna!" (Hawaiian: Bottoms up!) - https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=D4EQvMMcuo4JAfP3sktkCQ&userid=O6EBodP3Fgu_n67efSKnBQ My libation of choice was a Modelo with a wedge of lime. Truthfully, I am not a very big drinker, less so when it comes to beer. However, I noticed a beer of choice amongst fellow sailors is Modelo. So, when in Rome, "Modelo, por favor." Front Waiting Area - https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=EMW4ruuSGE5icBnNW8j6LA&userid=O6EBodP3Fgu_n67efSKnBQ The attention & service we received at the club was great; the servers were professional, courteous, and helpful. We ate at the club twice; lunch & dinner. For lunch, I had the Boar Belly Banh Mi. My friend asked, "What is that?" Well, pork belly is not for the skinny jeans, grass grazing, tree hugging, calorie counting, spring water drinking, kind've person. Think gluttonous, artery clogging, this sh*t is sooooo bad for you, steak cut strips of bacon and that pretty much sums it up. Now, take that kept friendly, bacon steak and marry it with the traditional Vietnamese sandwich, banh mi... 'Delicious. Boar Belly Banh Mi - https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=Mv9NG0w4ABD7GSEYykKKQw&userid=O6EBodP3Fgu_n67efSKnBQ My lunch order came with a side, our waitress highly recommended the tater tots. I thought, really?... 'Tater tots? Hmph, okay, why not. All I can say is the lady knows her tots! (Thumbs up) The little golden brown cylinders of potatoes were cooked perfectly; crunchy with a light crust, moist & flavorful, and not too oily. I'd have to say it was the first time that I ever took notice of something as simple as a tater tot. Tater tot trivia: Here's a little fun fact; he actual name "tater tot" is a registered trademark of the American frozen food company, Ore-Ida. Much lot like Coke, Band-Aid, and Styrofoam... 'And the more you know. Tater Tots© - https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=PIial_5QC6AyGAHFfsmIHA&userid=O6EBodP3Fgu_n67efSKnBQ Later that evening, we were back for dinner. The skipper was meeting his his brother-in-law and nephews at the yacht club. Again, the service was exemplary as before. The menu offered a lot of great selections, prime rib sliders, shrimp tacos, a variety of salads, fish & chips, lamb burger, chicken pot pie, meatloaf, and a 20 oz ribeye... 'My favorite cut. I just wanted something simple and Yacht Burger was the obvious choice; cooked medium. The burger's a half pound of Angus beef, lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickle, griddled brioche bun. (Option to add cheese or bacon) I passed on the added cheese or bacon; I used up my fatty points earlier with their pork belly sandwich at lunch. For my side, I had fries and like lunch, my meal was very good. The hamburger wasn't spectacular but for what it was, it was done well. There have been times when I've eaten @ a restaurant and thought, "How do you mess up a burger?!" HA! Had a good race, made some great memories like being caught in the doldrums at 1am, falling asleep at the helm, while trying to make it around the most northern of the Coronado Islands. Up until that point, we were making good time... 'And the rest of the race into enSANaDIEGO harbor shall never be spoken of again. I look forward to the next time I'm in the area and have the opportunity to visit the Southwestern Yacht Club again. I've thought about going a club in the Dana Point area but it always comes back to $$$, plus the fact they don''t honor coupons. Oh, yeah, and that thing called "standards." Life is Good, make it Great! Fair winds, be well, be safe. - Big Aloha, DJ Food: 4 Ambiance: 4 Service: 5 Value: 4

Very lackluster dining experience for Sunday lunch!! Though the patio was sparsely patronized, the service was abominable. Staff did not clear tables, allowing birds to pick at food left on vacant tables. Staff was exceedingly slow to take our order. Staff never checked on us during the meal. Staff never returned to fill water glasses, etc.. Then the wait for our check after our meal was exhausting. The reason they even get 2 stars is because the view and setting was pleasant, and the food was good. If my friend who is a member wants to take me here again, I'll suggest another place!!

I would give one star. Except for the fact our initial server was amazing. The secondary server was horrible. He was so upset that I asked to have the bread for the sandwich I ordered be rye/white bread instead of sourdough. Then when he brought the order and they had made it with sourdough I asked him to take it back and change it. He huffed and took the sandwich around the back-not towards where he came from the kitchen. Then I didn't get my food back for 45 minutes. We were there for 3 hours and then we had to go inside and ask for the check.

We had a graduation party there and wow! Was an awesome time!!! Class off 2022 congrats!!! The food was amazing, prime rib, salmon, salads, potatoes, cooked veggies, huge dessert selection and much more! Staff were amazing, we definitely paid for our party but it was well worth it!!!! Such a great dinner on the marina and fun dancing!!! Thank you San Diego Yacht club for hosting an amazing memory!!!

I had lunch at Southwestern Yacht Club's restaurant today. I ordered their Ceasar salad. The menu claimed it was a Ceasar Salad, with croutons. I ordered it with chicken. What I got was a joke. The romaine lettuce was chopped, not torn, their verson of Ceasar dressing had not one thing in common with actual Ceasar Dressing, it came with an oil and vinegar dressing. I asked for Ceasar Dressing so they brought something that had no resemblance in any form to it. Their Ceasar Salad without a doubt was the worst Ceasar Salad I have ever experienced, anywhere. I ended up not eating it at all and settled with an order of onion rings (greasy onion rings, but edible.) We were charged the full price for whatever that salad like thing was even though I only tasted it with two forkfuls and some of the chicken. We paid it without complaint and left. Southwestern Yacht Club needs to take a serious look at just how their restaurant is being managed.
