Marina del Rey’s harbor produced an unexpected light show Wednesday evening as a luxury yacht loaded with ammunition and fireworks burned for more than two hours before flames were extinguished, authorities said.
Flames leaped 20 to 30 feet from the 100-foot vessel, dubbed the Admiral, while live ammunition rounds could be heard firing from the boat, according to videos from the scene .
Thursday morning, the charred yacht was lying on its side, and the water around it was tinted red from the diesel fuel dumped from the vessel. A Coast Guard spokesperson said an estimated 4,000 gallons of diesel was dumped into the water. The total is not official as monitoring continues.
Los Angeles County Fire Department officials said two passengers aboard the boat exited safely. No information was available about the cause of the blaze.
An L.A. County Fire spokesperson said one individual suffered minor injuries, was treated at the scene and was released.
The boat, traveling at a high speed, crashed into the jetty near its slip, killing a man. It would have been much worse, if not for the quick thinking of a passenger.
Aug. 8, 2024
Firefighters responded to a call around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and eventually knocked out the flames at 10:33 p.m. The boat was declared fully submerged at 11:33 p.m.
The yacht’s owner, who was not identified, told fire officials that the vessel was carrying 1,000 rounds of ammunition and fireworks.
U.S. Coast Guard personnel confirmed they were on the scene evaluating cleanup options.

The Yacht Rigger is a one-stop business for all your marine rigging needs and more. We have had Stephen and his crew do a lot of work on our boat (a 42' sailing catamaran) including new standing rigging, running rigging, construction of a solar arch and tender lift system, custom made solar panels, installation of solar controllers, custom made dive tank holders, increased the length of our rode and replaced the bridle. We even needed some aluminum welding done and Stephen was more than happy to do it for us. Stephen is a man of integrity and a complete professional who loves his work and works tirelessly to see the project completed and ensure the customer is happy. He is now our go-to guy for all of our boat work. I cannot recommend The Yacht Rigger highly enough and we are thrilled with all the improvements he has done to our boat.

As you can see in Google reviews these guys have amazing reviews but as my other reviews show, I review based on the details of my own experience, not others. I wanted them to replace the rigging but also do additional and related work that that Yacht Riggers ultimately broke up into three different projects: replace all standing rigging, replace all chain plates, and install a bow roller for my 55 lb mantus anchor on my 30 ft Pearson. Before going into the details of the execution it should be noted that I value communication before, during, and after the project above all else. What I mean by this is that I will let so many mistakes and lapse in project planning and foresight slide in the presence of good and consistent communication, not just with me, but with each other as well. I would say poor Internal communication is the primary motivation behind the three stars. Initial contact/planning: I need to mention that I initially contacted Yacht Riggers in January 2021 and that all work has been verified complete June 16th 2021, it should be noted that actual work commenced March 1st. So please understand this could have been due to a backlog. If you consider the amount of time to complete from initial contact it took 6 months. If you consider the amount of time to complete from the start of work it took 2.5 months. This is not as bad as a kitchen remodel of mine that took a year and a half (see 5280 google review) :-) Communication/follow up: From a communication standpoint here is what I experienced. They only reply to emails once a day, you must leave a message if you call and they will respond with the same cadence as emails, once a day. Please note, I found this to be typical, not every time, as there were certainly exceptions. Here's the three star part of this review; towards the beginning of the project to about the middle, the participants in the project had a lot of internal communication problems. This tapered off significantly towards the end as I think they were finding too many things being missed that ultimately dug into their profits, so it was remedied. I told them that I wanted a 55 lb mantus (purposefully oversized for the boat as I wanted more weight on the ocean floor when anchoring). I communicated this through phone and email at least four times throughout the process and they forgot that detail at least three times. This tells me that if there was a project plan that the size of the anchor was not taken into consideration, noted, or integrated as they ran into problems with the size when they ordered the new anchor roller. They had physically been on/in the boat more than enough times to make a qualified assessment. They even disconnected the bow pulpit for the dry fit in anticipation. The reasons they gave for why the anchor wouldn't work was based on a visual assessment after they had ordered hardware, performed welding work, and put in man hours. While I was credited labor I was not credited all of it, again, for something that could have been assessed by qualified personnel with many years of experience behind them. The problem was it wasn't communicated that the anchor was 55 lbs. they even tried to tell me they didn't know and I countered they did know and it was mentioned (and acknowledged) in several emails. They had not shared the information internally, this is a recurring theme with them on this project. For the rigging work they gave me an estimate of 7000 and the final invoice was 4378. I mean, that's pretty off. People might say, "yeah but it's in your favor". Ok, but it's an in accurate estimate by any standard. They did better with the chainplate and bow work. I asked them not to go over 4000 and they hit 200 over before taxes...it's fine. My total for the rigging, chainplates, and anchor roller install was 8935. Because of the poor planning on the bow work they gave me the mantus anchor for half price. Works for me. The poor internal communication is my only real beef. The work was good, some had to be redone but nothing that was a big deal. A windex bolt came loose, there was a chain plate leak, lack of proper planning caused loss of time and labor hours, and at one point the fuller drum wasn't secured in high winds and scratched and scuffed my deck. I like Yacht Rigger's enthusiasm but wish there was more of a project management mentality with their execution. By all accounts, they are the best in the area. I only hope my review serves to help people anticipate communication problems that could arise with this team.
The go-to riggers in West Florida, hands down. The entire team is not only knowledgeable, but potentially the highest integrity marine outfit you'll ever work with. They've expertly rigged my 46' cruising cat and I've seen firsthand their work on other sailboats. Truly the best around.
I received a call from the company and although less than pleasant, and obvious they had read my review, they agreed to buy back a part bought because the first electrician they sent misdiagnosed the problem.
Sep 18, 2021
Hi James. Thankfully there are always two sides to a story. I'm glad I'm able to give our version. This might seem long winded but I feel it's necessary to be so that we can explain what happened here clearly - although I have told you this over the phone already. First off, yes, we did have a rather unpleasant conversation a few days ago, mostly I would say, due to you feeling the need to constantly curse at me, and while doing so accuse our team of committing fraud on the job. Back to the job in question. When you initially called in with wind instrument problems we sent out a team to replace the masthead anemometer (transducer) which is the most common cause of failure in these systems. This did not solve the issue, so we sent out an electrician to test the rest of the system. The electrician (whom you are incorrectly accusing of incompetence), followed Raymarine tech support guidelines in troubleshooting the unit, and based on their live feedback, was under the impression your head unit had a bad ground. Once you supplied the new head unit it became apparent this was not the case - electrical fault finding in electronics is tricky at best. We did not charge you for a single minute of the first electricians time (two call-outs) as we realized the diagnosis was incorrect and it would be unfair to do so. The second electrician used a different technique, and established an issue with the internal mast wiring. So we returned and replaced the mast wiring. Once this was done, we plugged in your old transducer (which I now realize you are accusing us of switching out with another, bad unit because we didn't label the unit to your liking) and it still didn't work. We double checked the mast base connections, and it still didn't work - so we plugged in the new transducer, and it worked. So both the wiring and the transducer had faults. This is where we dive into the realm of perception vs reality. During our phone conversation you accused our guys of deliberately disconnecting the mast base wiring during the test of the old transducer, and then sneakily reconnecting the wiring when we plugged in our transducer. First off, this is simply offensive. Secondly, this would be a very foolish fraud model as we only make a few dollars on a transducer like that due to the incredibly low margins on electronics. In other words, besides it being immoral behavior, there's no incentive to do so. You continue to maintain that the first electrician was "incompetent" and cost you $220 due to you buying the head unit on eBay. I would have thought you would just place that item on eBay and re-sell it. When I brought this up you lamented that doing so was A LOT of work. Despite this not really being the case, when you expressed not wanting to do this I told you we would do it for you and just write you a check for the $220. This was done on Friday. We have still not received payment for the invoice sent to you for the work performed as of that Friday afternoon. I hope it arrives soon. At the end of the job, yes, it was higher than initially estimated, simply due to the fact that additional parts were bad and some additional labor required to replace them. When I went through the invoice with you line by line to establish which parts of it specifically you took issue with, all you would say was that we were incompetent fraudsters and wouldn't address any items specifically. I'm really not sure what else we could have doing here. Regards Stephen
I have used them before and they did a good job, but this last time was just awful. I had an electrical problem with my wind and direction gushed. They sent an electrician who did not have the correct parts and misdiagnosed my problem as the control head needed replacement. Since I have an older boat I had to find one used on eBay which I did for $220. That wasn't the problem so he contacted another guy who did have the right equipment and knowledge who found the real problem. The Yacht Rigger refused to honor the cost of replacement part I did not need and the eventual bill was about twice the estimate.
I needed a bigger anchor after dragging one night. I called the YR and they spent lots of time helping me decide on a Mantus M2. They delivered the anchor to my boat, helped my son get the crate lifted onto the foredeck, and provided great tech support about greasing the castle nut. I was concerned that I assembled the anchor wrong and they came out and took the anchor apart and reassembled the anchor, free of charge. Great company, great pricing, great customer service.

Thanks guys! Great working with you!
I have known and worked with these guys for many years. It is very difficult to be good at everything but I believe that these guys do a very good job with everything Boat related! Their knowledge and talent is refreshing in an industry that doesn't always have the best reputation. Completing difficult jobs in a very difficult time right now with Covid challenges, it's nice to have a company that you can count on like the Yacht Rigger
Hey Colin, Thanks very much for the review. Always good doing business with you guys.
I bought a new to me sailboat in oct 2020 and was told by my surveyor that it needed a new rig (all new standing rigging). This is where the yacht riggers come in, even though I was out of town they came to my boat and did an inspection. I was called by Stephen at the yacht riggers and told that my surveyor I was correct and that I didn need a new rig. This gave me the ability to use that during my negotiations for the price of the sailboat. I purchased at the end of oct, and had the sailboat to st Petersburg and getting the rig replaced by jan. I would say they were about a month out for repairs like this. I showed up the day of for the mast removal onetime and so was their crane operator (this is outsourced) they share space with a working yard. They removed the mast and allowed me to be apart of the process as much and or as little as I wanted. I participated a lot in and throughout the process. It took about a month before my mast was refurbished and all new standing rigging in place and a time scheduled for me to have it re-stepped. They also scheduled me with another person who was having theirs taken down to reduce the cost of the crane between the other boat and mine. This was prob a 200-300 savings for myself and the other boat. The job was finished fast and with great communication. I even had bought a new lamp for the mast but they had replaced it already and instead of charging me for the lamp I just gave them mine which I had ordered because I got it at a significant discount and they called it square no charge for the install etc etc. I also continued to use the yacht rigger during my next 2months in st Pete for a few more projects. I ordered from them a new Atlantic tower in a box. No fault to them the company had sent the next size up tower which at first was a pain for myself as I was installing it myself and was getting frustrated with the process because I could not figure out why it was still to large after following all instructions. I called and spoke with the yacht riggers about this and they figured out that it was in fact the wrong size for my vessel but would work as long as I did a few more things which would mean I actually have a beefier tower then I needed or paid for which isn't a bad thing. But without question one of the owners came over to my boat that day and helped me fix the problem giving me about 3 hours of their time which was prob about 8-10 hours of mine had I not had Brian helping me out. This lead to me getting my tower up the same day I started the project and now having a beefier setup for my new solar panels I was installing too. Brian who's amazing at welding also was able to help me with my heat exchanger. He was able to reconfigure the mixing elbow end of my heat exchanger which had blown a hole and was causing my engine to over heat and fixed in about a week for a few hundred dollars making the heat exchanger look and work like new. This compared to the 2300 dollars it would have cost for a new heat exchanger for my yammer was amazing. These guys seem to do it all and do it with a smile! This was by far a great experience with 99% of the stuff I needed being done on time and for under budget. I would go back to them in a heart beat!
in my 70 years in the industry they are literally the best people to work with in the industry!

It’s not just volume that has changed drastically in production cruising yacht design, it’s how designers and sailors use it, which has been a clear focus on the Dufour 44
Price as reviewed:.
What makes the perfect saloon for a cruising yacht? Ask anyone of a certain age and they’re likely to start with safety aspects – snug, with at least a couple of good sea berths, plenty of handholds and no big, wide open spaces that might be dangerous when thrashing to windward. But as we’ll see, Dufour has thrown away the rule book allowing Ardizio Design to create an interior with a refreshingly different style to most.
I sailed a prototype boat from La Rochelle a few months ahead of the Dufour 44’s official launch at Cannes in September. The Umberto Felci-designed hull has beam carried well forward at both deck and chine level, though there’s lots of flare above the waterline, especially forward, giving a relatively narrow waterline beam and low wetted surface area, which boosts performance in light airs.
We experienced the benefits of this immediately after leaving La Rochelle’s Port les Minimes marina, sailing close hauled in only 8 knots of true wind. Even in these light airs we maintained a fairly consistent five knots of boat speed. As we got further offshore in the west-northwesterly airflow, the wind increased to 10 knots and boat speed to six knots, rising to 6.5 knots as the breeze built to 12 knots. Throughout our sail the boat tacked through 95° or less.
Power meets volume: the 44 has very full bows and flare above the waterline, which creates a lot of space without huge drag. Photo: Jean-Marie Liot
Dufour worked a lot on sail shape with Elvstrom to get the right balance between depth and power for the optional sustainable and high tech Ekko sails which the test boat is equipped with. They set well and clearly helped the boat’s performance and feel.
Felci studied options for both single and twin rudders, determining that the former is sufficient, even with full sail in more than 25 knots of breeze. This gives more feel on the helm than twin rudders while also making the boat easier to handle in harbour, thanks to the prop wash over the rudder. It’s also a simpler solution that frees up more interior and stowage space.
The hull shape is such that stability also builds very quickly when the boat starts to heel and the leeward chine digs in. As true wind speed increased to 14.5 knots ahead of a line of cloud, boat speed nudged up to 6.7-6.8 knots, with a little more heel but not a lot by the standards of older designs. This was still very comfortable sailing and a long way from needing to reef, even though the apparent wind was now above 18 knots.

Throughout my test the boat had a direct and responsive feel to the helm that belies the 10.2 tonne displacement. Even when attempting to bear away without easing the sheets and the boat well powered up, the rudder still had plenty of bite and answered the helm immediately – a world away from wide-stern single rudder designs of two or three decades ago.
Bearing away to a true wind angle of 65-70º when the true wind dropped back down to 9 knots we still made a comfortable 7 knots of boat speed, although with no asymmetric spinnaker we weren’t able to check realistic speed potential on broad reaching angles or downwind.

Helm stations are well outboard, which gives a good view of the luff of the sail, though you can’t sit astride the wheel when helming upwind. The cockpit sole is quite high, which means the side deck next to the wheels is quite low, but it’s still a comfortable seat when helming. There’s also a seat behind the helm that allows you to sit comfortably when driving for long periods. In all cases there’s a good view of the headsail luff.
There are no foot chocks for the driver on the basis that owners have so many different preferences it’s impossible to satisfy everyone. Instead this is a dealer-level customisation to allow each owner to choose their favoured solution.
The passage to the side decks is forward of the helm stations, which makes the mainsheet winch on the Ocean version a bit of a stretch from the wheel. On the other hand, it provides plenty of space for a crewmember to work the sheets.
The 108% headsail of the test boat is set on a Facnor FD flat deck furler that helps maximise luff length, although a smaller non-overlapping jib can be specified.
The test boat includes many of the comfort options including six winches and the trademark Dufour exterior galley/grill accessed from the swim platform. Photo: Jean-Marie Liot
The mainsail is set up as standard with two single line reefs, the positions of which were defined after careful analysis by both Elvstrom and Felci. It’s not currently possible to order a third reef from the factory, but there is a spare sheave in the boom and space at the mast plate to install one. Commendably large rope bins are provided at the companionway and behind the winch stations.
The stern platform has access to the cockpit on both sides of the transom, facilitating easy circulation of people. Liferaft stowage is in the middle, with Dufour’s trademark outdoor galley with a barbecue and small sink above. Add to that a fridge in the cockpit table and it’s easy to understand why many Dufour owners predominately cook outside in favourable weather.

Many of today’s yachts are used in a different manner to those of the past. Three or four decades ago a Nicholson 32 or Contessa 32 might have been considered an average size serious cruising yacht. Yet a passage plan might assume an average speed of 4 or 5 knots and weather forecasts were nowhere near as good as those of today, which meant a far greater chance of a passage across, for example, the English Channel or North Sea, turning into a beat at the end. Throw in a tidal gate or two and a lot of 75- to 90-mile passages back then became 18- to 24-hour ordeals.
By contrast, today’s boats are on average a lot larger and proportionately much faster, with the result the same distance is normally covered in no more than 12-14 hours and often a lot less, unless it’s a straight beat to windward. But even that is less likely, thanks to the massive improvements in weather forecasting over the past few decades that mean long upwind slogs when cruising are now encountered much less frequently.
Another difference is that today’s boats don’t heel as much – a wide, high form stability cruising hull shape will rarely see much more than 20°, even when pressed, and 15-18° is more typical. That makes it easier to move around the interior when bashing upwind.
Spacious saloon with hexagonal table and compact galley will work best in harbour. Photo: Jean-Marie Liot
Saloon and galley layouts by Ardizio Design feel distinctly different to many boats, yet will make sense for a lot of owners.
The space is dominated by a large C-shape seating area with a hexagonal table to port. A neat innovation is the three movable fabric stools that provide extra seating on the inboard side of the table. These can be used flexibly, are lightweight, don’t fall over and have an effective non-slip base. They also stack against the starboard settee, extending that space into a larger lounging area.
On the downside there’s no dedicated navstation, other than a folding shelf for a laptop, and the forward galley option initially looks small, with a lack of fixed worktop space, though there is more at a slightly lower level than the main countertops.
The prime benefit those full bows bring is found in the voluminous master cabin. Photo: Jean-Marie Liot
Handholds and grabrails below decks are important for safety at sea, yet provision is often poor on many new yachts – and in any case owners often have different ideas as to what will work best for them. Dufour has planned for interior handrails to be added as a customised option at the dealer level and has designed a choice of mounting points into the underside of the coachroof for this purpose.
Stowage is well configured and in general a marked improvement to older designs, with plenty of thought given to ease of use of space. For instance, there are drawers under both port and starboard settees. These cost boatbuilders extra money to install, but can make a huge difference to life on board.
Other neat touches include a wine rack under the saloon floor and Dufour’s effective dustpan below the cabin sole. There are lights combined with USB outlets next to each bed and the spacious forward owner’s cabin has a good area of bookshelves and space for phones, keys, wallets and so on next to the head of the bed.
Nonetheless, the interior is better in harbour or at anchor than at sea and the galley on the version I tested won’t be easy to use when well heeled. There is an option for a conventional linear galley on the starboard side.
A lot of yacht to enjoy at anchor – note the large hull windows. Photo: Jean-Marie Liot
As with other models in the range it’s available in Easy, Ocean and Performance variants. The bulk of sales of the pared-down Easy version are likely to go to charter companies, while the Ocean model I sailed will be the choice of most private owners.
Dufour worked with charter companies in Croatia to optimise quick and easy access for maintenance and repair of systems throughout the boat – also a big benefit for private owners. Easily accessible items are more likely to be inspected on a regular basis, markedly reducing potential for breakdowns.

While nothing is revolutionary about this boat, it’s a welcome incremental step as a more spacious design that performs well across a range of wind speeds. At the same time, the living arrangements, above and below decks, will work well for the large numbers of owners, both in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, who are not in the habit of making multi-day passages. Fuel tankage is arguably not generous at 250lt, but the boat’s light airs performance, particularly if the optional Code 0 and asymmetric spinnaker are specified, will mean a lot less time is spent motoring in light airs – and therefore a lot more time spent enjoying the sailing – than with earlier designs.
The Scheherazade superyacht was impounded by the Italian government in May 2022 in response to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. Instead of falling into disrepair, Italy has allowed its owner to maintain and refit the vessel, but it won’t disclose who is footing the bill.
The Financial Times reported on Sunday that the vessel has been held at port in Marina di Carrara, located almost 90 miles northwest of Florence, since it was impounded by authorities in the spring of 2022. For over a year, the Italian government has permitted the owner to continue paying for the ship’s staff, its maintenance and refitting of the vessel. But Italy won’t identify the owner.
Italy’s Finance Ministry said in a May 2022 news release that the superyacht had “significant economic and business links” with “prominent elements of the Russian government” but didn’t name the owner of the ship.

Mark Zuckerberg’s new yacht, Launchpad, is enjoying its summer debut. The megayacht recently stopped in Mallorca and has since ventured further into the Mediterranean. It looks like Zuckerberg may dethrone Jeff Bezos as king of this year’s superyacht season.
While the Amazon founder made waves last year with the debut of his megayacht Koru, Zuckerberg is the name on the yacht world’s lips this season.
By May, the transaction seemed all but confirmed when both the yacht and Zuckerberg made their way to Panama to celebrate his 40th birthday with a fete that included a few spins on his infamous hydrofoil.
Now that summer is here, Zuckerberg has debuted Launchpad —and her support superyacht Wingman — on the biggest stage in the yachting world: the Mediterranean.

Sailing Yacht A is a sailing yacht launched in 2015. The vessel is a sail-assisted motor yacht designed by Philippe Starck (exteriors and interiors) and built by Nobiskrug in Kiel, Germany for the Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko.
Its propulsion consists of a variable-speed hybrid powerplant with two lineshaft controllable-pitch propellers that is sail-assisted by a three-mast fore-and-aft sailing rig. The freestanding carbonfiber rotating masts were manufactured by Magma Structures at Trafalgar Wharf, Portsmouth. Doyle Sailmakers USA manufactured the three fully automated carbonfiber/taffeta full roach sails. The furling booms were built in Valencia by Future Fibres. The rigging of the yacht was developed partially to be implemented on cargo ships and for commercial use. The vessel features an underwater observation pod in the keel with 30cm (12in)-thick glass. It is the largest private sail-assisted motor yacht in the world.
Sailing Yacht A was delivered by Nobiskrug on 3 February 2017, and left Kiel on 5 February 2017. It exited the Baltic Sea in light mode on near-empty fuel tanks in order to clear the Drogden Strait with minimum draught. It underwent final sea trials and the final fit-out at the Navantia shipyard in Cartagena, Spain. Boat International called it “the boundary pushing superyacht”. The yacht is owned by Melnichenko through Valla Yachts Ltd. of Bermuda, and was initially registered there at Hamilton. In December 2021 the yacht was moved to the Isle of Man flag and registered at Douglas.

Just like the cars he adores and the boats he builds, John Staluppi is a walking, talking embodiment of the ‘American dream’. Starting out as a petrol station mechanic in Brooklyn, Staluppi built a billion dollar business of car dealerships, before turning his hand to creating some of the most iconic superyachts ever built.
We meet at Staluppi’s offices in North Palm Beach, Florida, but – apropos the man – this is no ordinary office building. The shopping mall on US Highway 1 looks innocuous from the outside, but once you’re buzzed in through the front door you enter a dreamscape. The building is home to Staluppi’s classic car collection and museum Cars of Dreams. The cars were arranged in a Brooklyn, circa-1960s, scene, complete with drive-in and merry-go-round. Yes, that’s a merry-go-round. A big one. It’s quiet: the museum is only open three or four times a year for charity events; Shop with a Cop, Hospice Foundation of America and American Heart Association are those that benefit.
Staluppi arrives, dressed casually in a blue open-necked shirt and jeans; burger, fries and shakes are delivered to eat in the museum’s ‘diner scene’ and we settle down to talk.
