Finding Your Way Around Split Ferry Port

Split ferry port berths

Split ferry port can sometimes look as the most chaotic place in Split if you don’t know how to find your way to your ferry destination.

There are dozens of ferries sailing to and from Split to different Central Dalmatian destinations. If anything about Split ferry port confuses you, just read my simple guide and directions for help.

Split ferry port map

On the map above you can see three key points inside the Split passengers harbor. Three piers correspond to different destinations and types of marine transportation, ferries for both cars and passengers, and catamarans which are only for passengers. If you’re interested to learn more about Split port history and development see Wikipedia for more information.

Split ferry port also has a fourth pier called Lukobran, used only by cruise ships. It was recently enlarged and deepened to be able to handle larger cruise ships and more traffic.

On the map you can easily find Split Bus and Train stations. Both are very close to each other.

Split ferry port berths

If you are arriving from Split airport by regular bus transfer or by taxi, chances are you will stop at Obala Lazareta . All foot passengers can take a fast catamaran to one of the islands here. See catamaran schedules and departures from Split port.

Split Ferry Port Docks

Car ferries sail from other two port piers, as shown on the photo.

International ferries from or to Italy usually depart from Gat Sv.Duje ( Gat means dock or pier) pier.

Majority of local island car ferries leave from local ferry pier Gat Sv.Petra .

It is important to note that some local ferries to/from Split can not be reserved online. You can technically book your local ferry ticket in advance on Jadrolinija’s website , but it doesn’t even guarantee a spot on your ferry.

You can purchase ferry tickets in local Jadrolinija sales point. Address is: Obala Lazareta bb, 21000 Split, Gat Sv.Duje bb, 21000 Split (yes, right on the ferry port). Phone number +385 21 33 83 33 in case you need it.

International Italy to Split ferries (Ancona to Split) can be booked online here . You can also book Ancona – Stari Grad (Hvar island) – Split – Ancona route for travelers planning to reach Hvar island directly. This route is only available in July and August.

Krilo is another company running many local ferry connections. For example they connect Split with Dubrovnik, Hvar, Sobra (Mljet island), Makarska, Bol and Milna (Brac island), Korcula island. You can check their schedules and reserve tickets here .

Special note for all passengers traveling by car:

Split Ferry Port Address

JADROLINIJA Agencija Split Gat Sv.Duje bb, Split tel. +385 21 33 83 33, +385 21 33 83 04, +385 21 33 83 05 fax. +385 21 33 82 22 [email protected]

Tickets can be purchased at the main office of Jadrolinija, the main ferry carrier in Croatia.

Office is located within the large ferry terminal opposite the bus terminal that runs all services departing from the docks around the terminal, or at one of the kiosks on Gat Sv.Duje pier.

Kapetan Luka also runs a new tourist high speed line Split-Brac (Milna)-Hvar-Korcula-Mljet-Dubrovnik, Catamaran Line 9602 Split – Hvar – Vis – Split. Booking is available online !

Tickets sale point in Split ferry port for all Krilo’s catamarans is at small kiosk at pier Gat Sv. Petar, the one indicated as local ferry dock on the photo. Phone number is +381 21 645 476.

In Hvar town you can purchase tickets at Pelegrini Tours at Hvar Riva Promenade, tel. +0381 21 742 743.

From Split Airport to Split Port

The cheapest and easiest way to go from Split airport to Split port is to take an airport bus which leaves you off at Obala Lazareta , just a short walk from the ferry port.

Alternatively you can find and book Split airport transfers here, or consider car rental if you plan on doing more traveling.

In case you are getting to the port by your own or rental car, find out where to find parking space near the port. Split city suffers from a shortage of parking places.

St Petersburg is a port city in Florida USA (Pinellas County) with population around 260,000. The Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metro by population (around 3,2 million) is Florida's second-largest - after Miami - Fort Lauderdale - West Palm Beach Metro (around 6,14 million). The city is on the Mexican Gulf and is one of the Tampa Bay Area's main cities - together with Tampa and Clearwater.

Port St Petersburg Harbor (1925-opened) is in downtown, and adjacent to two boats/yachts serving facilities - Municipal Marina and Harborage Marina (Bayboro Harbor). The Port houses the USCG Sector St Petersburg and serves mainly passenger ships - ferries (Cross-Bay Ferry boats), superyachts, cruise ships.

Cross-Bay ferries serve the Tampa-St Petersburg route seasonally (October-November thru May) since 2016.

  • In Tampa, the boats depart from Tampa Convention Center's dock, while in St Petersburg, they leave from North Straub Park's dock (near Vinoy Marina).
  • Departures from St Petersburg are on Wednesdays and Thursdays (at 4:45 pm), on Fridays and Saturdays (at 10 am), and on Sundays (at 11 am).
  • Departures from Tampa are on Wednesdays and Thursdays (at 10:45 pm), on Fridays and Saturdays (at 11 pm) and on Sundays (at 7:30 pm).
  • As of 2023, Cross-Bay Ferry adult ticket prices were US$12 pp per one-way crossing. Youths, college students, seniors, people with disabilities and active/retired military personnel receive discounted tickets.
  • In 2022, on the Tampa-Petersburg route was deployed the twin-hull catamaran Provincetown III (2004-built, IMO 9329394) which has max passenger capacity 149 and average speed 30 mph/50 kph.

The Cross-Bay ferry service is a public-private partnership between the counties Pinellas and Hillsborough and HMS Ferries Inc (part of HMS Global Maritime (1994-founded as Hornblower Marine Services, based in New Albany, Indiana).

As cruise port, St Petersburg Florida was introduced with the 2023 schedule of the ACL-American Cruise Lines catamaran ship American Glory .

The settlement was town-incorporated in 1892 and city-incorporated in 1903. As a harbor port, St Petersburg started to grow in the early-20th-century when the downtown waterfront infrastructure was developed, and especially after 1908 when the shipping channel was dredged/deepened allowing access to larger vessels. The city's tourism industry developed in the 1920s-1930s, with seasonal tourists arriving (by cars, trains and yachts) from Canada and the North-Midwest USA.

St Petersburg was the principal Gulf Coast destination for trains serving the routes from Chicago, Cincinnati and New York. The 1924-opened Gandy Bridge (carrying highway 92) and the 1960-opened Howard Frankland Bridge (carrying highway I-275) both span Old Tampa Bay and directly connect St Petersburg to Tampa.

The city's current-day economy is largely based on industries like finances (Raymond James Financial, Fidelity National Information Services), healthcare (Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, St Anthony's Hospital, Bayfront Health), retail shopping (HSN, Publix Super Markets), electronics manufacturing (Jabil), communications, private and higher education, tourism (annual festivals, parades, museums, arts, sports).

All aboard: Everything you need to know about the Cross-Bay Ferry

Veronica Brezina

The Cross-Bay Ferry is kicking off its new season on Thursday, as it works toward becoming a permanent transportation service in Tampa Bay.

The ferry, operated by HMS Ferries Inc., was launched in 2017 and provides a link between St. Petersburg and Tampa.

catamaran ferry port

The Cross-Bay Ferry docked at the Tampa Convention Center.

The goal is for the service to become a permanent year-round service by 2024 and have four vessels.

Today, the ferry service utilizes a 149-passenger catamaran that docks at the Vinoy Boat Basin near the St. Pete Pier District while the Tampa Convention Center serves as the Tampa terminus.

As the demand has grown over time, the Hillsborough Area Regional Transportation Authority has applied for a $5 million federal grant this month to obtain a larger passenger vessel, HART CEO Adelee Le Grand said during a press conference Tuesday in St. Pete.

“We are very hopeful we will bring home the grant dollars that will allow us to build a vessel that has a capacity of 350 passengers – that’s like twice the capacity we have today, which will allow us to move more people,” Le Grand said.

HART worked with the Hillsborough County staff and the HMS technical staff in the application process.

St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, Hillsborough County Commissioner and HART board member Pat Kemp, Pinellas County Commissioner and PSTA board member Janet Long and others touted the ferry as a solution to the congestion on the bridges between the two metros and takes advantage of the bay.

The ferry has long been financially backed by Pinellas County commissioners, Hillsborough County commissioners, the City of St. Petersburg and the City of Tampa.

The Cross-Bay Ferry docked at the Vinoy Basin in St. Pete.

Rates for riders: The rates have remained the same as the previous system, but there is a new rate for riders who are in wheelchairs. One-way for adults is $10, children under four years old ride for free, it’s $5 for persons who utilize a wheelchair, and it’s $8 for seniors, youth, military members and college students.

Schedule: It departs from St. Petersburg on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 4:45 p.m., 10 a.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. on Sundays. There’s no service on Mondays and Tuesdays. It does provide service when there are home games for the Tampa Bay Lightning. The one-way commute is 55 minutes between the cities. This season, the ferry will run for seven months, which is a month longer than in previous seasons, HMS Ferries General Manager Kevin Fisher said.

The future of the ferry

The ferry system is expected to complement other last- and first-mile modes of transit such as the TECO Line Streetcar, e-scooters and the bus rapid transit SunRunner service , the 10.3-mile line that will connect St. Petersburg, South Pasadena and St. Pete Beach in 2022

Ed Turanchik, who represents HMS Ferries, stated the ferry will eventually have a connection between MacDill Air Force Base and Southern Hillsborough County, which is home to the largest population of veterans in Florida.

catamaran ferry port

A motorcyclist carries his bike off the ferry.

Mosaic Fertilizer would donate a finger of property at its Big Bend site for the ferry to use as the South County terminus.

“If you look at an actual land map from South County to MacDill and go across the water, it’s amazing how much time we would be saving,” Castor said.

The plans for bridging Southern Hillsborough County to MacDill have been in the works for several years, as HMS was evaluating a handful of sites before negotiating with Mosaic on the potential terminus site.

If HMS Ferries moved forward on the site, the infrastructure cost to build out Mosaic’s South County terminus may need to be funded through Hillsborough County. However, the ferry operators would assume the financial risk and be responsible for vessel maintenance and repairs.

Govt vs Private Ferries for Neil to Port Blair

Government ferries like MV Kamorta and MV Strait Island are very old vessels, not air-conditioned, and can take around 2.5 hours to reach Port Blair from Neil Island. They are mostly used by locals and offer minimal amenities.

Private ferries provide unmatched comfort with amenities like air conditioning, TV, snacks, beverages and first aid. These modern, high-speed catamarans take just 1.5 hours to travel between Neil and Port Blair. Leading private operators like Makruzz, Green Ocean, Nautika and ITT Majestic offer 5-6 daily ferries with online booking. How do we get off at the beach?

For our island stops, we use a series of steps from the front of our boat to the sand. Typically, you can step right from the boat/steps to the sand. However, on occasion, it may be up to ankle deep.

What should we wear?

Comfort is key! Swimming is discouraged during the island stop due to strong tidal currents. Guests are encouraged to dress as they feel comfortable for their evening with easily removable shoes for their walk on the beach. Keep in mind, being on the water in the evening is about 10 degrees colder than is forecasted, so a windbreaker or light jacket is always safe.

Unfortunately we are not handicap accessible at this time. Guests with limited mobility (i.e. walkers, canes) should call our office prior to booking. A good rule of thumb is if the limited mobility passenger is able to make it up 2-3 standard stairs with assistance. Our crew is always here to help and eager to share our memorable trip with all!

Below I have tried to answer some of the typical question have regarding the ferry from Split to Hvar.

The sailing time from Split to Hvar town is about 60 minutes.

The timetable for the catamarans varies depending on the time of the year. The highest number of daily departures is during July and August, and the fewest departures are from October to April.

Yes, there are ferries year around

Depends on the operator. On catamarans operated by Jadrolinija, you cannot bring your bike. However, on the Krilo Jet catamaran, you can bring your bike but you have to buy a ticket for it in advance, as there are only a few spaces. Alternatively, you can take one of the other ferry connections to Island Hvar , such as the car ferry from Split to Stari Grad . Here you can take a bike without any problem (just remember the bike needs a ticket :-))

No, there are no car ferries on the route Split – Hvar town. You will have to travel from Split to Stari Grad if you want to bring your car.

No, you can not reserve specific seats. However, as Split is the starting location of the catamaran, you should be able to get seats next to each other if you are early in line at the Split port .

Not mandatory, but the ferry Split to Hvar is extremely popular, especially in the summer. So if you wish to board a specific departure, you should definitely buy the ticket in advance, either online or one day before at the port.

Yes, all the catamarans have toilets.

Yes, each of the catamarans has a kiosk/bar, where you can buy, coffee, drinks, and snacks.

Each of the catamaran companies has separate policies, from ticket amendment and cancellation, so you will have to check with them.

You can bring one large suitcase (up to 20 kg, but nobody checks the exact weight :-)), plus a handbag/backpack. The suitcases are stored in the catamaran racks, so keep your valuables and electronics in the handbag.

Yes, of course. There is the car ferry from Split to Stari Grad, and a car ferry from Drvenik to Sucuraj . Moreover, there is a catamaran from Split to Jelsa on Hvar Island and a catamaran from Dubrovnik to Hvar town .

My personal tips for the Split to Hvar trip

  • If you like a good view and want so sit together, be early at the port, in summer there can be huge lines for boarding the boat, and as there is free seating, you will simple get better seats if you are first in line.
  • If you don’t care about where sit, be the last one to board, as you will then have it way easier with getting your luggage when you need to get of the boat
  • Bring a bottle of water, most boats have air-condition, but with +300 people in a fairly small place it can still feel quite warm. Water (And other drinks) you can buy on the boat, but it is way cheaper bringing your own.
  • All operators have fairly good ships, so do not pick based on the operator, pick based on the departure time which suits you the most.
  • Suitcase are usually pilled up somewhere on the boat, so make sure you have nothing breakable.
